This is Sportsfix Howard by News Talks ed B.
Speaker 3 (00:21):
Hello and welcome into the final Sports Fix podcast of
this week. It is June the seventh, twenty twenty four.
I'm Jason Pine with my esteemed colleague alongside. How are
you does well?
Speaker 4 (00:33):
I'm not steamed, oh esteemed, I'm sorry.
Speaker 3 (00:38):
Time with that later.
Speaker 5 (00:39):
That's it.
Speaker 4 (00:39):
So we dropped the Sports Fix now because we're actually
going to do sport for the next two days. That's
what's going to grab all of our attention. And as
per piney lot's going on.
Speaker 3 (00:48):
T twenty World Cup has been underway, a couple of
shocks already. New Zealand under way tomorrow against Afghanistan. We're
going to hear from a former player on the podcast today.
Speaker 4 (00:56):
Yes, it's been nice bloke. Assistant coach's name is Jacob Warham.
Of course, an all rounder for the black Cats back
in the day, has been seriously involved in all levels
of cricket as a coacher, White fans and of course
now the black Caps is there. Game starts and let's
facing Pony it's almost a must win Fixtion. It's their
first up game. But more on that later on.
Speaker 3 (01:15):
All right, we'll kick around a few issues in the chamber,
and I've got some thoughts on the Super Rugby quarter finals,
so let's get into it. In other news, as always been,
start with some of the big sports toys around today.
A monumental cricketing drama unfolded in Dallas this morning.
Speaker 5 (01:37):
What to Do.
Speaker 4 (01:39):
USA has overcome the twenty twenty two finalists.
Speaker 2 (01:44):
The Stars and Stripes.
Speaker 4 (01:45):
Are flying high and proudly.
Speaker 3 (01:47):
In Dallas, Texas. There the United States beating Pakistan virus
super over at the T twenty Cricket World Cup. At
the French Keennis Open, Coco goth Is out beaten in
straight sets, and the Semis Bike Egish BEYONCEK.
Speaker 6 (02:00):
Tough match for me as os you played at a
tough level and.
Speaker 5 (02:04):
It was I think, I mean a lot of errors,
but you over I am happy, I don't know how happy.
Speaker 2 (02:09):
I'm proud of the running.
Speaker 3 (02:11):
And England regulars Jack Realish and James Madison have been
left out of the squad for the upcoming European Football
Championship by Boss Gareth Southgate.
Speaker 7 (02:20):
The fact is we've got some players who have been
playing extremely well all season in the league. We just
feel other players have had stronger seasons, particularly in the
last six months or so.
Speaker 2 (02:31):
Leading a vix, we've got just the ticket. It's Sports vix.
Speaker 4 (02:36):
Is see twenty World Cup. They started, it's underway and
it will start for the black Caps tomorrow. Jac morem
as sistant coach to the side it joins us. Now,
welcome to the show, Jake. Pressure is all on right
from the get go. Afghanistan are certainly no easy beats
and it's a team. Well you kind of need to.
(02:56):
You need to win against these guys, don't you.
Speaker 5 (02:58):
Yeah, we do.
Speaker 6 (02:58):
Yeah, I mean it's it's a tough start our first
two games, you know, two out of the four pool
games Afghanistan and then the West Indies.
Speaker 5 (03:06):
So pretty much we've got to be straight into our
work and you're right, Afghanistan will not be easy.
Speaker 6 (03:12):
I mean, they had I saw a stat the other
day that they had I think it was nine individuals,
nine players at the IPL this year. So they're not
the team that probably think they were all the thing
they are from years gone by.
Speaker 5 (03:25):
They've got some really quality world.
Speaker 6 (03:28):
Class players, and you think of their spinners, but it's
also their seamers and their betters now, so they're aside
on the up and absolutely we are not taking it
lightly and we need to get that win.
Speaker 4 (03:37):
Like you said that the nature of the draw, Jake,
you've got to beat one of these next two teams.
Will all do you to speak to Papua and New
Guinea and Uganda, you should have them in the bag.
So one of these next to in order to qualify.
That is absolute key.
Speaker 5 (03:52):
Yep.
Speaker 6 (03:52):
Yeah, we need to start this tournament well, we've obviously
prepared with that in mind. We need to make sure
there's no ruskers. Afghanistan and the Western Is we need
to win one. We're obviously gunning for both of those
to be wins, but we need to win at least
one of those to go through with that top two
into the next stage. So there's no time for feeling
(04:13):
our way into the tournament. We're the last team to
actually play at this tournament. Everyone else seems to have played.
I think this is about the fifteenth game by the
time we play, so we've got to make sure we
had the ground running and it's against a pretty good
sight in Afghanistan, Jake.
Speaker 4 (04:26):
There's been a lot made of the lack of build
up for this team. Coach Steed has been pretty adamant
that practices, single work of practices are going to work.
Speaker 5 (04:35):
Fine.
Speaker 4 (04:36):
We need to give these guys some time away. We
need to give them a rest before we drag the
best out of them. So I suppose in retrospect, do
you lose a couple, you start going, what have we done?
But how comfortable are you with the playing condition of
these players so late into the fix.
Speaker 5 (04:52):
I'm fine with it, I really am.
Speaker 6 (04:54):
I mean we've had what have we had six or
seven trainings over here, and I think all but two
of them have been in sort of open wicket scenarios
where yep, it's not a game, but it's as close
as you're going to get, and you're able to get
that simulation of being in the middle, you know, seeing
how far the ball's getting hit, you know, seeing how
you're bowling with Carrie. But at the same time you're
(05:16):
able to get the volume, so it's not like if
you're out, you're out stuff. So I think it's been
the best of both worlds. I understand that the perception
if we were to lose one game or a couple
of games that it will be the finger will well
and truly point at the lack of warm up game,
but I think that's a little too short sighted, and
I think when you look at the bigger picture, the
context is, you know, most of our squad, or more than.
Speaker 5 (05:39):
Half of our squad are at the IPL.
Speaker 6 (05:41):
Granted they all went starting every game, I know that,
but they have been in cricket mode and training their
butts off for a long time, so I'm still pretty
confident will be up for it.
Speaker 4 (05:50):
Expectations around gun on what the picture is actually going
to provide have you crystal balled it yet?
Speaker 5 (05:55):
JAKEB. We've just actually well, we've had a number of
trainings here.
Speaker 6 (05:58):
We've trained in the day morning, sort of afternoon, and
also had a night trening under lights, which is what
our game will be.
Speaker 5 (06:05):
Due fact, is not too bad.
Speaker 6 (06:08):
Rain forecast around, but to be fair, it has been
every day and it seems to just bypass us. So
we'll wait and see what we'll get. The pictures do
tend to be a bit slow suit the slower bowlers sometimes,
but you know people will look at their spinners and
think watch out for that, But you know, when we've
got the likes of sand Michael Bracewell has been so
good for us in the past. He showed you we've
(06:29):
got plenty of options with our spin attack as well.
Speaker 4 (06:32):
You're not going to let us know what the team
is tell just before you play, But are you settled
on the playing and eleven to a degree? Is there
any areas where you've still got some debate to unfold
before you name them?
Speaker 6 (06:43):
I think that the playing eleven is probably as close
to as it's going to get this far out. Yeah,
I think the guys who were well and truly in there,
you know, I could just tell it training earlier that
you know, they are heading more balls than others. And
I think that most of the playing leven will know
what's going on. But it's all about their balance of
making sure everyone's kind of still eager and keen and
(07:05):
trumping at the bit to get going. But I think,
based on the opposition but also the conditions that the
playing Levans fairly well set.
Speaker 4 (07:13):
Really really interesting article of recent times Stack of Borum
someone saying that basically you watch out for the black
cats because they have ability to bore people out of
the game. They will just strangle anything out of you,
and if you think you're going to get on top
of them, that's going to be very, very hard. It's
kind of a backhanded compliment, is it. But I like
the way they're thinking, because look, the Batsman one thing,
(07:33):
but restriction of runs through the bowling attack absolutely key.
Speaker 5 (07:37):
Yeah.
Speaker 6 (07:37):
When you were saying that, she's like, how do I
take that? Is that a good or bad thing if
you're in New Zealander? But I think it is a
good thing. But I also think it's at the same time,
it's a little disrespectful of you know, the likes of
Locky Fergson, who can bow one hundred and fifty klong
as our Trent Bolt, who's absolutely well classed, and you
see him playing in every franchise around the world because
people know how good he is. Tim Soudi with his experienced,
(07:58):
Matt Henry's quality, and then the Spen Spinners I mentioned before.
You know, Sata's playing around the world in the IPL
one hundred and others. So I can see what they mean.
I look at it like we are boring because is
that because we're kind of pretty street smart and we
work things out, you know, as opposed just rely on
you know, just playing on natural talent. So yeah, we
(08:20):
can board teams, but also think we've got the firepower
to blast away if need be.
Speaker 4 (08:24):
Thanks so much for your time, friend, we'll talk again.
Seeing go well for the tournament. MAT's super, super exciting.
Speaker 5 (08:29):
Thanks Darcie. I appreciate it.
Speaker 1 (08:31):
This is Sportsfix, you're daily does of sports news, twent
by newstalksb.
Speaker 3 (08:37):
Right Oh quarterfinal weekend and Super Rugby. Let's try and
find ourselves an upset somewhere straight away. We can probably
eliminate the games involving the top two. There doesn't seem
to be any scenario under which the Rebels will come
to Wellington and beat the Hurricanes tomorrow. This is the
last game of their existence, it seems almost certain. Similarly,
(08:58):
it will take a huge reversal of a waveform for
the Fiji and draw to come to Eden Park and
beat the Blues. The great paradox of the Drawer is
they're almost impossible to beat at home, but see completely
unable to win on the road. The Blues came within
that last minute chiefs try of finishing top last weekend.
They won't slip up here as they look to move
into the Final four fairly comfortably, so let's send the
(09:19):
Canes and the Blues through. The last of the quarterfinals
is in Canberra, where the Highlanders want to make the
Semis for the first time since twenty sixteen. They come
in and reasonable nick. Before they lost to the Hurricanes
last week, they had won four of their previous five,
and they only lost to the Brumbies by six points
earlier this season, and led that game until the sixty
fifth minute. The Brumbies, though a bit like the Drewer,
(09:42):
are very good at home, so they'll be rightful favorites.
The Highlanders, though, we'll sniff a chance to sneak into
the Semis, which just leaves tonight. Chiefs v Reds and Hamilton.
Ordinarily he'd say Chiefs all day long, but for some reason,
they just haven't clicked this season. They've lost their last
two games to finish fourth. Contrary to many me included,
(10:03):
who thought they'd topped the table preseason, the Reds have
been good without being great, but they did beat the
Chiefs earlier this season and were the only side to
beat them in round robin last season, and that was
here in New Zealand. Albeit in New Plymouth. Plus they
come in in good form, the Reds having won four
of their last five. So is there an upset brewing
(10:24):
in Hamilton tonight? Perhaps? Don't go chucking the house on it,
but certainly keep your eyes in yourears on it.
Speaker 2 (10:31):
The chamber is now in session on Sportsfix.
Speaker 3 (10:36):
Let's make ourselves comfortable in the chamber on the Sports
Fixed podcast. Quite a bit to get through today. The
United States have been in Pakistan and cricket to tasks.
Did you see this coming?
Speaker 4 (10:45):
No? But the first up game suggested that they weren't
going to just lie down and get rolled over right.
There's some pretty good players out there, and they've proven
it overnight.
Speaker 3 (10:55):
I think also the shorter format is one that lends
itself more to upsets. I think of the United States
played Pakistan in a Test match, which obviously wouldn't happen
because they're not a Test nation in the United States,
this would be far less likely. But I think in
a game of those upsets become more and more possible,
and I get the feeling this will not be the
last one we see in this tournament. Let's just hope
that New Zealand aren't on the receiving end from the
(11:17):
likes of Uganda or Papua New Guinea.
Speaker 4 (11:19):
Yeah, well, let's hope as well that the Pakistan team
don't saw the bed sheets again like what they did,
that's super over. They provided, if you could call it provided,
was awful three wides in that. I'm sure the Pakistan
fan base is gonna be upset. And of course they've
got India coming up, so that game is going to
have a huge amount on it after stumbling against the USA.
Speaker 3 (11:39):
Yeah, the way the tournaments formatted is you can't really
afford to lose that often and go through because only
two of the top oh sorry, only two from each
group of five go through, as I understand it. So
for Pakistan now they really are up against it in
a situation where if they don't beat India then they're
probably not going through to the next phase. So I
(12:00):
guess the cursory lesson for New Zealand, and obviously we've
heard from Jacob Orum on the podcast today is that
you kind of got to beat Afghanistan and and that'll
get us off on the right footing. So you know,
just quickly, what are our chances tomorrow?
Speaker 4 (12:13):
Yeah, I'd say pretty good. But don't underestimate Afghanistans. You
look at Sri Lanka and what they were like back
in the day and everyone dismissed them. Banglades not any more.
Afghanistan definitely on the up. But New Zealand really need
to win one of the next two games because I've
got West Indy second, and I'm sure that Papua and
New Guinea and you Gun you Ganda won't provide too
(12:34):
much of a nashi. But one of these next two
games they have to win, and with no build up
we'll see.
Speaker 3 (12:41):
Indeed, well, we're into must win situations in Super Rugby
quarter finals. I've given my view on all four of
them a few minutes ago on the podcast, but can
to know whether you think an upset might be in
the offing tonight when the Chiefs host the Reeds and
Hamilton does.
Speaker 4 (12:56):
Don't underestimate the Reds, do not. But what I like
about the Chiefs, I'm sorry to bore people because I
keep saying this. They learned from last year about timing
their run. They've got it right this time around. It
is at home. The crowded FMG have been phenomenal. So yeah,
there's a chance more than any of the other games
we're going to see. But I'd like to think that
the Chiefs are really peaking at the right time here.
Speaker 3 (13:19):
Yeah, although you say that and then you look back
at their last two results and they've lost both of
their last two games. I know the performances have been,
you know, have been sort of better than the perhaps
the score line suggests, but I don't know that the
Chiefs just have just haven't clicked at all. But here
they are hosting a quarter final, and I think you
and I are having this conversation yesterday. At some stage
they could well win three knockout games in a row.
(13:40):
The Chiefs could still win Super Rugby, couldn't they?
Speaker 4 (13:42):
Absolutely they can that in now they have a chance.
They're not a slack team. They've got a wonderful pivot
and Damien mckins in. A couple of crash hot players
there too, And when you look at the loose Ford
traier a lot to light. But the Reds will leave
nothing out there. There are a punishing bunch of players.
Speaker 3 (13:57):
Are they'll hurt absolutely right. Look forward to that game
and the other three tomorrow. As our residents motorsport aficionado,
what can sport fans walk forward to across the weekend.
Speaker 4 (14:10):
US well long weekend, because it's all happening on Monday,
Formula One We're going to Canadian Grand Prix Montreal and
this is one of the most beautiful tracks in the
whole of Formula One. And the standard about this is
the Wall of Champions. It's basically a wall on the
track that a number of champions have driven straight into.
It's taken a lot of people out of the race.
(14:30):
It's one to be worn. Guys like Michael Schumacher, Damon Hill,
Jacques ville Neuve, who else who got Jensen Buttons caned
into it. There's a lot of drivers who've come a cropper.
It's a ripping circuit. Really looking forward to that. I
can't back anyone. I suppose as a key we you
go well as long as someone from red Ball or
there or thereabouts doesn't do well. Maybe len Get, I
(14:54):
don't know. But it's a great race. It's actually one
of a bucket lists. I'd love to go there and
watch it and then on early enough on Monday morning,
I think it's like breakfast times about past seven on
Monday morning. Scott Dixon trying to go back to back
in Indie Can at the Road America, which is one
of the most beautiful tracks in IndyCar. It's an absolute
(15:15):
treat to the eyes. And of course Scott now are
chasing down the most wins ever in Indy Cars. He's
now in nine away from Foyt. He's looking to equal
him when it comes to championships. That's not out of
the question either, the way he's running, So this would
be good. I really interested to see if he can
carry on stomping it. It's not only him, it's that
incredible team that he's got and of course the guy
(15:36):
chasing him, one of his teammates, should be a good one.
Speaker 3 (15:38):
Absolutely, an absolute feast for sports fans over the next
three days or so. Be it motorsport, be at rugby,
b A T twenty cricket, be at the French Open, tennis,
the NBA playoffs, and lots more besides. That is us
in the chamber, though our time is up for today.
Speaker 4 (15:53):
