Speaker 1 (00:09):
You're listening to a podcast from News Talks. It be
follow this and our wide range of podcasts now on iHeartRadio.

Speaker 2 (00:17):
This is Sportsfix Howard by News Talks It Be. Here
we go again.

Speaker 3 (00:21):
Welcome into the Sportsfix for the twelfth of June twenty
twenty four on Darcy Walter Grave and this is your
fix of the latest and greatest sports news from New
Zealand and sometimes right around the globe. Coming up in
this episode, shortly old talk to four.

Speaker 4 (00:37):
Times World Endurance champion Brendan Hartley.

Speaker 3 (00:40):
Let's not forget he's picked up the Lamar twenty four
hour race three times as well. The twenty four hour
Lamon is set to go this weekend in France. I
got some editorial thoughts around the nature of the America's Cup.

Speaker 4 (00:53):
It looks like New Zealand missed out on billions, but
did they?

Speaker 3 (00:57):
And then we're joined in the chamber by Nathan Limb
ZBB Sports Journey as we'll look, amongst other things, at
the nature of the Black Caps and the possibility of elimination.

Speaker 4 (01:10):
In the T twenty World Cup. That's the master plan, right,
Let's charge into it.

Speaker 3 (01:15):
In other news, Yes, and sports News Now by the
people who made it.

Speaker 4 (01:21):
The Black Caps are in Salm's strife.

Speaker 3 (01:23):
Not only are they picking up the debris after Saturday's
derail with versus Afghanistan, their training ahead of the must
win match against the West Indies has been hampered by inclement.
Whether the nets were unplayable, says coach Gary Stead.

Speaker 5 (01:38):
When we went back and tried and they were pretty
slippery to stand up on and then also the balls
were going through the top of the surface, so we
had a good field in training instead.

Speaker 3 (01:47):
It's been thirty two years since he Zild last had
a four main kayak enter at the Olympics. Today debutants
Grant Clancy and Hamous Lagarth, also Tokyo paddlers Max Brown
and Curtis Henry, were named in the four berth boat
for Paris. Max is looking to the future.

Speaker 6 (02:03):
We'd love to racist at the Games and to be
something that grows for New Zealand.

Speaker 5 (02:08):
With the amazing walker scene that you have.

Speaker 6 (02:10):
There's some really good technical skills there that would transfer
to seaboat.

Speaker 4 (02:14):
Emory will also pairs Legarth in the K two.

Speaker 3 (02:17):
But wait, there's more, he said them will have a
canoe entry to the first time for US at the Games,
competing in the stand up knee down discipline, if that
makes sense, and Tiger Woods is leaning on the next
generation to propel them back into the majors winning circle.
Son Charlie's offering tips to him ahead of the US

(02:37):
Open at Pinehurst awkward.

Speaker 7 (02:40):
I trust him with my swinging in my game. He's
seen it more than anybody else in the world. I
tell him what to look for, especially with putting, and
he gave me a couple of lossy a bit today
which was great.

Speaker 4 (02:52):
And there's her vocal evidence of today's.

Speaker 1 (02:54):
Sports news dissecting the sporting agenda.

Speaker 2 (02:59):
It's sports facts with Darcy Waldegrave.

Speaker 3 (03:02):
Motorsport fans, well, they stay awake for twenty four hours,
especially if you're a driver. The twenty four hour of
lot more up and running before you know it. And
we're joined by a man.

Speaker 4 (03:12):
Who's picked up the trophy. What are we doing now?

Speaker 3 (03:15):
Three times Brendan Hartley, four times World Endurance Champion as well,
you've got a handle on the.

Speaker 6 (03:21):
Savine, haven't you, Yeah, morning mate?

Speaker 2 (03:23):
How a yeah?

Speaker 6 (03:23):
But if I've got a handle of yeah, a lot
of experience now I've worked out the other day, I've
been doing it since twenty twelve and I only missed
one year, So yeah, a few, a few La Mole's
under my belt, been lucky enough to send on the
top step three times. But it's if anyone's for anyone
who's following those already. But yeah, the competition this year
is incredibly tough. So we've got twenty three or twenty
four cars in the top category, sixty two cars on

(03:45):
the whole grid, but so many cars in the top
category is incredible. A lot more, a lot more manufacturers
turned up this year, with Lamborghini, BMW in a Ferrari, Persia,
Porsche US and the Twilda. I've probably missed a few
there as well, did I say Porsche?

Speaker 2 (04:00):
I think I probably did.

Speaker 6 (04:01):
They've wanted a few times as well. So it's going
to be incredibly tough to win this year. But ye're
hoping my experience and my team's experience is gonna give
us the edge we spoke.

Speaker 3 (04:10):
Of this last year, Brandon, and it's good for the
sport that suddenly all of these marks have climbed back
and again it does make it more of a challenge.

Speaker 4 (04:19):
Are you reveling in this? Do you think there's something
that you like, even.

Speaker 3 (04:23):
Though you're down the standings somewhat, is this good for
you and your team?

Speaker 6 (04:27):
Look, I'm loving it. We won the World Championship again
last year, but we missed out on Lamar, which I
think if you could reverse those roles, and I if
I look back at last year and I say, if
we could have won the more but we didn't win
the World Championship, I think I would have taken La Moore.
So this year is not going so smoothly, particularly on
our car. I think we're fifth or sixth in the
championship at the moment. We haven't had the best starts

(04:48):
of the season. But it's double points for Lamar, and
as I just said, it's you know, a lot of
the priority goes onto it. I'm I wouldn't say, I'm
you know, everyone says what's your expectation, You know, there's
no expectation, But I would say we have some confidence
that we had the test day on Sunday, which which
went smooth. I did the third fastest time of the
day and our GA zero ten two porches in front

(05:11):
of us. A Porsche looks very quick too, so does
the Cadillac, which is a manufacturer. I forgot to mention
just before with Elbamba, one of a fellow countrymen driving
the car and the Ferrari. I think, look, there's good,
there's gonna it's gonna be hard to know who's got
the fastest car. But Lamar's such a long race, so
many things can happen, and as I said before, I
think that the experience from our team, we've been here

(05:31):
the most well. I think our team is the longest standing,
you know, in this category without fail so a lot
of continuity with drivers as well, So I'm hoping that's
going to give us some form of edge. But you
never know what can happen in this race. But I
do believe we'll be able to hopefully fight for some
steps on the podium and if if luck and luck
goes away, and also everyone does their job correctly, we

(05:54):
might be able to stand on that top step.

Speaker 3 (05:55):
Britton Hartley joining us at a Twitter Gazoo racing ahead
of the twenty fur of Lamont coming.

Speaker 4 (06:01):
Up this week. Ken, you talked about the amount of entry.

Speaker 3 (06:05):
Surely this increases the complexity of the twenty four hours
team fold. The amount of different cars, different classes, different
drivers all out there all over the track, they just
head to the can.

Speaker 4 (06:17):
I call it excitement, Brendan.

Speaker 6 (06:21):
I mean, it's it's massively exciting. I think there's a
team photo today with all the cars on the grid.
I mean it's yeah. I mean, I've got my hair
standing up just talking about it. It's going to be
it's going to be an electric atmosphere when we line
up on the grid on Saturday afternoon. I don't think
it changes out. I'm just thinking about the approach of
the race probably doesn't change a lot, you know, since
I've been doing them more, it's been a twenty four

(06:42):
hour sprint. Someone say like, we are pushing these cars
to the limits for twenty four hours. There's always a
bit of risk management and traffic. So I think if
the competition heats up kind of halfway through the race
at the end, I think we'll start seeing a lot
of people take a lot more risk than we're used
to in traffic. So hopefully there's no no big accidents.
And also I think track position becomes way more important.

(07:02):
You know, in the past, you were just focused on
your own race.

Speaker 2 (07:04):
You wouldn't worry about the others and.

Speaker 6 (07:06):
Just try and maximize that twenty four hours but I
think now with such close competition, you'll, I think strategy
will be a bit different. Will always be trying to
figure out how we can get in front of the
competition with strategy, pit stops, maybe a risky dive up
the inside. So look, it's going to be exciting for everyone.
And I don't know if exciting is the right word
for driving. Sitting behind the car, we've got a lot

(07:27):
of stress and fresher but you try, and you try
and remind yourself how privilege you are and enjoy the
little moments as well. I'll be taking on qualifying, which
is probably the highest stress point of the weekend from
my perspective, putting low fuel on new tires and going
from all out attack on quality lap.

Speaker 4 (07:44):
It sounds like the most fun for a racer.

Speaker 6 (07:46):
Surely it's not always fun actually, but yeah, it's hard
to describe the feeling, honest.

Speaker 4 (07:55):
Very dynamic.

Speaker 3 (07:56):
The way the drivers actually work, and you were just
touching on that before. Who drives when and where, what
the order is in is going to be more so
during the race itself for the ability to chop drivers
in and out or is it more set in stone
like it has been previously I.

Speaker 6 (08:14):
Think we'll have a we'll have a game plan. You know,
sometimes that can change. But I think again, I think
our approach won't be that different from from the past.
And yeah, we normally have a pretty good plan, but
we have to stay flexible as well.

Speaker 3 (08:27):
As far as the car itself and the expense of
the category. What's actually changed mechanically in this car? What
are we looking at the difference between last year and
this year.

Speaker 6 (08:39):
Very little has changed. I mean the molligation of rules
haven't changed. So we'll have you know, we've had a
few updates actually not not really, not really anything you
would see visually. We've got a different paint scheme, looks
a bit like a Batman bill now it's.

Speaker 2 (08:52):
Black rather than white.

Speaker 6 (08:54):
And then you know, we're refining all our tools every race,
every year, so a lot of electronics on the car.
How that these full drive hybrids work set up as well?
You know, you learn, you're always constantly learning how you
can optimize the set up and get the most out.

Speaker 2 (09:09):
Of the package.

Speaker 6 (09:09):
You have, so various more details from our side. Some
of the other cars have have some bigger updates and
we have completely new cars on the grid.

Speaker 2 (09:16):
As well as We've got just the ticket. It's sports
vix By, News Talks.

Speaker 3 (09:22):
Ivymerica's Cup is bearing down on us like a runaway
oil tank. At the question is how much of us
have actually brought into this and talking about buying it
into things. It looks like New Zealand has missed out
on a cash windfall after Grant Dalton and as merry
Men decided to disappear off to Europe to peddle their

(09:43):
wares and.

Speaker 4 (09:43):
Make a small fortune.

Speaker 3 (09:45):
Paul Lewis wrote a great piece today in The New
Zealand Herold about the reality of exactly how much money
in New Zealand has lost and whether indeed it was
the two billion dollars that has been talked about over
recent times. The big thing for us is we haven't
got the America's Cup in our backyard. That is the
reason you win the America's Cup, so you can defend

(10:06):
said cup in your own backyard. The money beyond that.
I don't think your average sailing fan, or your average
sports fan, or your average patriot here in New Zealand
couldn't give two shakes about how much money they stand
to lose. Obviously, Grant Dalton does that's why he took
his whole event over to the highest bidder in Europe.

(10:27):
So we'll watch from afar. We might consider the losses
that we took on board. We'll probably look back at
the COVID effected last America's Cup and say, see what happened.
But that, of course was a global pandemic. It was
a very different case. We may never see the America's
Cup here again. And as much as we'll miss collecting
around the White Matar to watch these mighty machines compete,

(10:50):
the reality is we can't afford it, and we'll be
watching it on TV like everybody else. And hey, I
guess Minot's out a joint. But when push comes to shove,
once those boats start sailing, I'll be all over it
like a rash.

Speaker 4 (11:04):
Love that technology.

Speaker 2 (11:06):
The chamber is now in session on Sportsfax.

Speaker 3 (11:09):
It's Kim in a chamber now. Nathan Limbit joins u
Seb sports Journo. Plenty of stuff to chew over today.

Speaker 4 (11:17):
It's a terrible pun. I'm sorry about that, Nathan. How
are you made to you? Well?

Speaker 2 (11:21):
I'm well, thank you, Darcy. Looking forward to this.

Speaker 8 (11:23):
Yeah, we'll get into major league eating surely, wait before
we do that, le, Let's look, I suppose the big
issue of the day is again the black Caps underdone
before going into this mast win match against the West Indies.

Speaker 4 (11:38):
It's been a sorry tale, isn't it.

Speaker 6 (11:39):
Bro.

Speaker 9 (11:40):
Yeah, it's been really confusing actually, to be honest. And
obviously they're missing another net session today because of rain.
This team is so underdone and that was so evident
in that Afghanistan game, just the drop catches, the misfields,
the bizarre shots election. They looked like a group of
people who were playing cricket together for the first time.

Speaker 5 (12:00):
Oh.

Speaker 3 (12:00):
We were assured though that the open work at practices
is plenty an you're listening to that going really, are
you sure?

Speaker 2 (12:07):
Yeah?

Speaker 9 (12:08):
And a lot's being made of their decision not to
have warm up games, and obviously coach Gary Stead has
now responded to that and said, look, we wanted to
schedule them and later we had players out with the IPL.
You know, the governing body said that that wouldn't be
able to work, but Australia had seven players out with
the IPL. New Zealand had I believe Devin Commos with

(12:29):
the side but he was injured and they had Lockie
Ferguson and Trent Bolt who were in the playoffs. Australia
had you know Cummins, Travis Head stilliness, they had seven
players out, they had injuries.

Speaker 2 (12:40):
They still did a warm up.

Speaker 9 (12:41):
Game against Namibia and they had the head coach and
the trainers and people playing as fielders because they were
only down to nine players. If New Zealand's missing three
from the IPL, or maybe a couple more because of injury.

Speaker 2 (12:52):
Still get out there. Just give the players.

Speaker 9 (12:54):
You've got some time to play against international oppositions, so
they're not.

Speaker 4 (12:59):
All this guys.

Speaker 3 (13:00):
If tomorrow they can get it done up against the
West Indy West Indies, it goes away.

Speaker 9 (13:05):
It's got well, it doesn't go away because the net
run rate is now so poor that even if they
beat the West Indies and a West Indies, Afghanistan and
New Zealand all end up on the same number of wins.
Because of New Zealand's shocking performance with the bat against Afghanistan,
new Zealand's going to be at the bottom of that
list because of the net run rates. So they don't
just need to beat the West Indies, they need to

(13:26):
absolutely thrash them and hope that some other things go
their way as well.

Speaker 3 (13:29):
And it's a home game for the West Indies, which
doesn't hell and possible changes said said maybe maybe not
not sure, you'd think after what happened, they go, you
know what, you're gonna have.

Speaker 9 (13:40):
A role bro, Well, surely Rasim Ravendra comes in. Surely
they've got to change something. And like the players they've
got are good, they're just all undercooked. It's as simple
as that. And you if you're having you know, another
net session rained off, it's not going to help.

Speaker 3 (13:55):
Let's carry on talking about undercooked and horrible puns keep coming.
We're talking major league eating, and yes it is a thing.
Nathan's hot Dog eating competition has come up, and one
of the all time greats of Gorge and himself, Joey Chestnut,
he's not going to be their contract issues, contract issues
and professional eating.

Speaker 2 (14:15):
How good? How good that we actually can talk about this.

Speaker 9 (14:20):
Yeah, Joey Chestnut, he's the greatest of all competitive eaters
over the last however many years. He's in his forties now,
but yeah, he's not competing at Nathan's hot Dog Eating contest, which,
just to clarify, isn't my hot dog eating contest.

Speaker 4 (14:32):
Oh you you yeah.

Speaker 9 (14:34):
Well, if he's out, there's anyone's game. Darcy, I'm thinking
I might put myself forward.

Speaker 3 (14:39):
Well, there's no Kobyashi either, and he was one of
the greats too, but he retired out of his hair
because of the health issues.

Speaker 2 (14:45):
No one saw that coming. No one saw it coming.

Speaker 4 (14:48):
Major League eating, though, you know what this covers.

Speaker 3 (14:50):
Do you know how many different categories they've got a
Major League eating Go on, have a.

Speaker 2 (14:54):
Guess how many different categories?

Speaker 3 (14:56):
I just name a few if you can. What are
they gonna have eat competitive eating in your thing? Because
it goes all over America, huge over there.

Speaker 9 (15:02):
Well it's American, right, and it's got to be foods
that you want to just absolutely gorge yourself on.

Speaker 2 (15:06):
So the hot dogs.

Speaker 9 (15:08):
Pete Burgers, there's got to be some some sweet stuff.

Speaker 2 (15:12):
In there as well.

Speaker 3 (15:13):
Buffalo wings, tacos, if they do anything it's outrageous.

Speaker 4 (15:16):
As puffer fish that could be a bit killer.

Speaker 9 (15:19):
I was going to say, you need food that you
want to watch people eat like. No one's going to
go to a lettuce eating content, a spinach spinach eating contest,
No one's going to watch that. You need foods that
you want to absolutely gorge yourself on because when I
watch sometimes my FLATML and I we chuck a video
of people just eating ridiculous amounts of food on the
telly and it just makes you want to eat. But

(15:41):
if they're eating foods that, you know, vegetables, like who
wants to watch that?

Speaker 4 (15:44):
Brussels sprouts, carrots?

Speaker 2 (15:46):
Oh, get out of here.

Speaker 3 (15:47):
Now, I've got you on that one as well. Something
that I think that you would excel in. Just one
food group that you think you could destroy in a competition.

Speaker 9 (15:56):
I reckon, chicken burgers, chicken and avocado burger, slap some
mao in there, maybe a little bit of bacon.

Speaker 2 (16:01):
I reckon, I could smash fifteen of those.

Speaker 4 (16:03):
Keep it simple, Nathan, You've got to keep it simple.

Speaker 5 (16:05):
Just that.

Speaker 2 (16:05):
What about wan tom dumplings, dumplings, dumpling?

Speaker 4 (16:08):
Thanks, see you go in.

Speaker 3 (16:09):
I'll bring a bag in tomorrow and we'll get amongst
So we have finished things off with the Wars. That
team was out yesterday six to seven combination. Johnson's got
a seat back again outside of him to Mighty Martin
and a possibility of well, something a little different. According
to coach Andrew Webster, as they take on the competition
favorites and like perennial favorites Melbourne Still yeah.

Speaker 9 (16:29):
A lot was made of whether Tomty Martin and Shanell
Harris Tavita should remain the Harves combination given how well
they've performed, especially Martin, but I think this is the
right call from coach Andrew Webster. Johnson goes back into
seven to Marty to six, and Chanell Harris Davida drops
to fourteen and can cover dummy half and be a
halves option as well. He could also play fullback if
he really needed to. But obviously before when Johnson and

(16:50):
Martin were a combination, Johnson would pop up over on
the left hand side of the field to do the
kicking and be the playmaker on that fifth tackle. Now
that Martin's sort of proved himself in terms of the kicking,
his accuracies improved each game. He looks so in control
and he's running the back line really well. Johnson doesn't
have to do as much work, So Martin going to
get his hands on the ball a lot more. As
wat's Webster said, He's going to be able to run

(17:12):
that left hand side of the field, and that means
that a Johnson's not having to do as much and
B he's less of a target.

Speaker 3 (17:19):
So looking forward to that and then looking forward to
the next conundrum. Roger Tuivasa Chick finds us way back
into the side, but that is another story for another day.

Speaker 4 (17:26):
Nathan Lermia, I know you want to talk.

Speaker 2 (17:29):
Get me started, but I won't let you.

Speaker 3 (17:30):
