Speaker 2 (00:21):
Hello and welcome into a fresh episode of the Sports
Fix podcast at the start of a brand new sporting week.
I'm Jason Pine. Now good to have you along. Loose
forwards and All Blacks loose forwards. This seems to me
to be one of the big conundrums facing All Blacks
coach Scott Robertson as he ponders his first All Black squad,
which he's going to name a week from today. Next Monday,
(00:44):
he'll name the thirty two men for test matches against
England and Fiji. And the loose forwards are plethora of
options for Scott Robertson and a real balance to strike
as well. One of our best former All Blacks loose forwards,
Josh Cronfelder, is on the Sports Fix podcast today to
lend some analysis to this. Elijah Ffeiel is in the
(01:05):
chamber as we look ahead to the Super Rugby Final
this coming weekend and why can't the Warriors beat the Storm?
These and other topics in the Chamber let's get into it.
In other news, let's check out some of the big
sports stories around today. Bryce and d Chambau's won the
US Golf Open at Pinehurst number two. He's finished six
(01:26):
hundred half of the tournament and emulated the achievement of
his boyhood hero who won on the same course in
nineteen ninety nine. It to Penne Stewart, he was the
reason why I went to SMU. He's the reason why
I wore.
Speaker 3 (01:36):
The cat pony up.
Speaker 2 (01:38):
That's right.
Speaker 4 (01:40):
I just can't thank you guys enough for all the
support this week.
Speaker 2 (01:43):
You guys have meant the world to me. You are
the best fans and I can't thank you enough. Keev
we Single scole of Tom Macintosh has tasted World Cup
victory in the boat for the first time, winning gold
and Poland just six weeks out from the Olympic Games.
It is a good.
Speaker 5 (01:56):
Confidence building exercise out there. There's some good competition with
Spheary and Demyre, so yeah, over all for me, it
was just the executed a race plan, rolling as well
as I could, and yeah I came home with a
good performance and England are on the bought at the
Euro twenty twenty four Football Championships, Jude Bellingham's thirteenth.
Speaker 2 (02:12):
Minute header giving them a one mill win over Serbia
in their opening match. Time he has stuck in behind
the back and it's a swift, challenging It's.
Speaker 1 (02:24):
Let's take it in two leading a VIX.
Speaker 2 (02:27):
We've got just the ticket. It's sports Fix now, News
Talks ivy, Let's talk some right B on the sports
Fix podcast. A week away from the first all Black
squad naming of the year, some of the most contestable
positions in Scott Robertson's first squad are the loose forwards.
One of our best ever Josh Cronfeld fifty six times
he wore the black jersey. He joins us to lend
his analysis to this conversation, Josh, the hottest competition seems
(02:51):
to be at number eight. Hoskins Stitutu Wallace, t T Bradon.
Y'are say all vying to back up Arlie save probably
who has the strongest claims.
Speaker 6 (03:02):
You'd have to think Hoskins. Hoskins would be in their
Branden He's put his hand up. I think he's had
a fantastic season and I guess it just comes down
to what do you like in that player and what
mix does he offer? You know, whether he's involved. In
(03:28):
terms of Wallace, I just reckon that he's but young,
you know, like there's no rush, you know, but if
you like it, if you like what he's offering and
the way he does things, then get him in there,
I guess. But I mean, you kind of didn't mention
(03:53):
Luke Jacobson. You know, he's been playing at eight a lot,
and you know, you have to think that he's a
no brainer to be involved as well, because look, he's
played every position. I think he was playing seven on
the weekend more than he but not so. I mean, Jesus,
they're the brain. The brain did manage to pick that up,
(04:13):
so you know, like I mean, and I wonder if
really the fact that Wallace was playing at a was
more a factor of just being out where can we
put them and make them most comfortable and again prob
(04:34):
Luke just doing the money for the team and fitting
in where he needs to fit in to make, you know,
to be that difference. It's look, in terms of picking
actual loose forwards. At the moment, I'm really confused with
what's happening with the game in terms of I don't
(04:54):
think we have genuine open sides anymore. I don't think
a feature is what we have. I think that the eight, six,
and seven of all kind of been globed in together
now and they are individual roles like they were per
se back in my time and earlier. And so consequently
(05:16):
it's you know, your eight can look like you're six,
and your six can look like you're seven.
Speaker 3 (05:21):
And vice versa, and and mean, it's just like working,
you know, looking at what's in front of you, I think,
and who's available and how they are going to fit
together with what your your your backs and you and.
Speaker 6 (05:38):
Your type forwards offer. And I think that's going to
be come down to some of my mister Robinson making
accurate decisions on what he thinks or how he thinks
he wants to play his fifteen man game.
Speaker 2 (05:52):
And so now as you're talking, I'm now thinking rather
than who's my six, who's my seven, who's my eight,
I'm thinking, yow, who's my six, seven, eight combo? I'm
thinking of a combo now and so so so this
might seem like an odd question, but who would you
play at six? I mean the female Blackadder? Who's the sex.
Speaker 6 (06:12):
Look, there's so many that's sort of six eight sort
of combo, I mean, and then you've got a seven
eight combo with Artie, you know, like I think fer
them at eight or seven rather than the sixth role.
But I mean, like, has the game moved on? And
(06:32):
that's just me looking at it from from an old
school place. I don't know in terms of combinations, you know, quaky,
I mean pure eight at the moment Hoskins Stutu's you know,
you've got to kind of look there and that combo
(06:53):
that they're doing with a Kidder and Dalton and then
with Choke coming on, it's infallible. You know, you can't
argue with it. It's been working and they've they've got
themselves into a final situation. And then you look at
what what the Canes have been doing and with Larkeye,
I mean you can't argue that he hasn't had a
great season, and Duplessy as well, and they've changed how
(07:18):
they've used him in the game, you know, as being
the guy that comes off and finishes the situation. It's
just it's just really I mean, you could even go
into the you know, a renting and Sanders in the
holness that you know when they were fit and on
the field regularly. They're both beasts of men, you know,
(07:38):
and you know, but look, I'm just checking stuff out,
which isn't answering your question. I just reckon it's really
hard to answer that question just at the moment. The
only person that can actually answer that probably Scott Robinson.
Speaker 2 (07:56):
Indeed, and we'll find that a week from today when
the man himself unveils his first All Blacks squad. Josh
always enjoyed chatting Rag. Good with you. Thanks for joining
us on the Sports Fix podcast.
Speaker 6 (08:05):
Whe's are piney? Take care of me?
Speaker 1 (08:08):
This is Sportsfix, You're daily dose of sports news, how
invade news talks evy.
Speaker 2 (08:14):
Great to hear from Josh Cromford. They're what a player
he was? What a loose forward he was? Just to
put a bow on this loose forward conversation on the
podcast today a week today, as I say, we know
Raizable name a thirty two man squad to play England
and Fiji. Highly likely. It's almost been telegraphed that it'll
be of eighteen fourteen split eighteen forwards fourteen backs, and
(08:35):
in those eighteen forwards you can probably pick either five
or maybe six loose forwards depending on what you do
in other position. So let's say he goes five props,
three hookers and four locks. What's that twelve? So it
leaves six loose forwards. So who are those six loose forwards?
I think we can all agree that Artie Savia is
(08:55):
one of them. So you're looking for five more and
the best place to start is probably who starts against
England in that first Test, and then you work back
from there. So I go Artie at number eight. I'd
pick Dalton Papa Lee on the open side and Summer
Penny Female on the blind side. So then I'd add
Luke Jacobson. He can cover all three positions, and I
(09:16):
think as Captain of the Chiefs, has had a storming
season and has earned his place. Ethan Blackadder I would
put in there as well, who was probably our next
best six? And that leaves one spot, and I think
Hoskins Setutu probably just edges a couple of others as
the backup number eight. That does leave some pretty decent
(09:37):
players out three in particular who have turned heads this season,
but all uncapped. Peter Larkeye and Braden Yossi out of
the Hurricanes and Wallace Satiti who just continues to impress
out of the Chiefs. Their time will come. We all
know that they will all most probably be all blacks,
and what a time that could be in the years
to come with those three in the mix. But for me,
(09:59):
those are my six lusis that I reckon Scott Robertson,
ll Name a week from today, Artie Savier Dalton, Papa Lee,
He's some a Penny Female, Luke Jacobson, Ethan Blackadder and
Hoskins sto too. But again it's just one man's opinion.
Speaker 1 (10:15):
The Chamber is now in session on Sports Fix on.
Speaker 2 (10:20):
The Sports Fox podcast. It's time to pop inside the Chamber.
It's become almost a tradition, now a trend. If you
like Elijah, who joins us, hey do it may Yeah,
not too bad, pony.
Speaker 4 (10:30):
I mean, I feel like I've been on the panel
long enough on the Monday to I guess add some decorations.
I guess said it to the Chamber, or at least
give it, give it a nickname. I feel like you
and I I feel like it would be a great
fan favorites. I guess as a peer, i'd officially like
to name this chamber the People's Chamber, so I feel
(10:54):
like the people out there will definitely get behind a
due like us chatting about sports coming off the back
of the weekend.
Speaker 2 (11:01):
All right, I'm gonna look, I've written it down, the
People's Chamber. I love it all right, Well on the
People's Chamber today, I think the people want to know
who favorites for the Super Rugby Final. You know, we're
five or six days out, we don't know the team shit,
we don't necessarily know the state of some of the
injuries for either side. But who do you like five
or six days out for the Super Rugby title?
Speaker 4 (11:23):
Well, taking my I guess biased cap off as a
Blue supporter, I still think the Blues are the favorites,
but I do think it will be very close. Compared
to the last one and two teams met, I know
that there were a few leats withdrawals from both sides
the last time they met. I believe Rico didn't play,
Rique Yuani didn't play for the Blues, and Shawn Stephenson
(11:46):
and Morne Nadawa were pulled out lets against the Chiefs.
So I think when those two full strength squads hopefully
come together I'd pick the Blues in this one only
because I think that forward pack is going to be
the de signing factor and they've shown that all season.
I'm not sure how you see things, Piney.
Speaker 2 (12:02):
Well, I agree and for similar reasons. The other point
of that has to be remembered as as we know
some are Sauny Takeo who's not going to be there
for the Chiefs, and Bradley Slater is also a question mark.
So we're looking at at one and possibly two very
inexperienced hookers coming in. Tyrone Thompson is a handy rugby player,
(12:23):
but he's hardly played this season for the Chiefs. He
has been given very very few opportunities all In fact,
I've just had to look half a dozen appearances off
the bench. He hasn't started a game all season for
the Chiefs Tyrone Thompson, and he may well have to
do that in the biggest game of the season. Clayton
McMillan also said on Weekend Sport yesterday that there are
(12:44):
four or five others with a question mark hanging over them,
so look that they're battered and bruised after the Hurricanes
semi final ge they played well though Elijah, I thought
they were terrific. Quick check on the tab Odds Blues
one fifty chiefs two forty five. So that kind kind
of bears out what what you've been saying, and I
guess what I've been saying as well. So right the Warriors, Elijah,
(13:04):
I've been waiting all day to ask you about the
Warriors and the Storm because I know you've been able
to unpack things that I haven't really been able to
unpack as far as the analysis of a rugby league
game is concerned. But I got home from the rugby
action and I was sort of following the game, you know,
on my way home, and the Warriors a fourteen dollar hit.
(13:25):
I thought, we're finally gonna snap this losing streak against
the Storm. What happened?
Speaker 4 (13:31):
I honestly don't know. I piney, like I guess when
you're facing it seemed like the Storm, who have been
great for so many years, pretty much two decades now,
it feels like that they've been so dominant and near
the top. That sort of showed on Saturday night clinical
on an attack. I think the defense was overwhelming against
(13:54):
the overwhelming that the Warriors, and I guess the warriorsn't
really helped themselves with a couple of those sympons to
Marcelo Montoya and Dylan Watiner Zelesniak, and I think Dylan
is facing a one game ban, so I couldn't provided.
That's probably the best I could give you, Piney, But
I guess sixteen straight losses against the Storm that's probably
(14:14):
not a record, not an ideal record. If you're a
Warrior supporter.
Speaker 2 (14:18):
Just before you leave the Euros, you know I'm a
huge football fan. You're following the Euros, you're a sort
of an interested bystander, fully invested. Where would you fall
as far as the European Football Championship is concerned.
Speaker 4 (14:31):
I wouldn't say I've been waking up at one am
or four am to.
Speaker 2 (14:34):
Watch the games.
Speaker 4 (14:35):
I'm sure you're probably best suited to do that. But
I have been catching up on the highlights, and I
will say it does look like an atmosphere. The atmosphere
out there is definitely what you'd expect from Tenny of
your football fans. I think I've seen a lot of
off field moments that have caught my eye. Particularly I
think I saw a video of Scotland fans and I
think a kill was accidentally lifted up. I think I
(14:57):
saw Albanian fans, well not accidentally, but they snapped a
bundle of spaghetti in front of Italian fans, and Italian
fans were pleading with them. No, I don't do that, so,
I mean, it's all fun and games. So that sort
of really caught my e about the Euros And yeah,
but I'm not sure how you've been how you see
things regarding the Euro's painting.
Speaker 2 (15:13):
Yeah, it's funny you say that, because I think it's
all about everything that is wrapped around the tournament. Yes,
the football is one thing, but yeah, I think Germany
run a terrific tournament. You know. They it's you know,
the food's good, the beer is cold. You know, there's
the public transport is good for the most part, although
there have been some issues with the trains as I
understand it. But yeah, look, it's a It provides a
(15:35):
really good base for a month long festival of football.
Not none of the fans have to travel very far.
You think about World Cups where fans have to spend
their life savings getting to the other side of the world.
You know, I mean there are probably some fans that
we're just popping across for a game or two on
a very cheap flight into into Berlin or whatever it
might be. So yeah, I'm yeah. I always enjoy a
(15:56):
tournament because you know, as you say, there's a one
o'clock or four o'clock or seven o'clock for the first
couple of weeks. Yes, so for me, not a lot
of sleep, but I'm enjoying immersing myself as I have
enjoyed immersing myself the People's Chamber, Elijah, it's been great
to chat a bit of sport with you. I think
we should get some special branding done and we'll reconvene
next Monday.
