Speaker 2 (00:21):
Hello there and welcome on into the Sports Fix at
THEADA for June twenty twenty four. My name's Darcy Walter Graven.
Here it is the latest and greatest in sports news
you need or maybe didn't. Coming up shortly in the show,
Mike Hesson. That joins us. Mike Hesson, of course, a
former Black Cat coach. As we look back at what
happened ormonres the point what didn't happen in the T
(00:41):
twenty I World Cup. We'll touch on the amazing career
of Trent Bolt as well. I've got some opinion for
you around Israel, Dusmir and the might of the City
Kickboxing Gym, that tiny gym in the middle of Auckland
that keeps on creating superstars in mixed martial arts. Joining
me at the chamber my fine colleague Elliot Smith. Of course,
(01:01):
he's a rugby editor and commentator of all things code.
And we'll pick apart some of the biggest sports stories
of the day. Right, that's enough let's get into it.
Speaker 3 (01:10):
In other news and in sport, in the last twenty
four Black hatspicially bout out of the T twenty World
Cup with a hammering of Minnos Papua New Guinea.
Speaker 2 (01:21):
Aside some suboptimal overs with the ball. Skipper Kane Williamson
has focused on the quality of the surfaces in the
West Indies.
Speaker 4 (01:30):
Rhythm to batting doesn't really exist on these wickets. Is
trying to find a method that might allow you to
get competitive totals and that's quite different, I think to
other services that are slightly more even.
Speaker 5 (01:42):
But you know that's the challenge this in front of you.
Speaker 2 (01:44):
The All Whites commandced hostilities in the Oceania Nations Cup today,
with teen of the twenty one athletes being under twenty three,
a youthful exuberance that coach Darren Beasley has confidence in.
Speaker 6 (01:57):
I have no doubt that the players understands their roles
and responsibilities. You know, we catch it pretty simple and
I think we've got a really energetic group of players.
Hair you know, the really you're waiting to take an
opportunity and still.
Speaker 2 (02:11):
With a beautiful game. The Euro's roll on with the
French tasting of victory. They beat Austria at one that
zip that see the Star killing Buppe exitible suspective's broken nose.
How one three favorites to go all the way this
euro after winning Star and another results Belgium Saturday one
(02:35):
that Neil defeat to Slovakia while Ukraine were beaten three
zip by Romania. And that's ninety six US on sports
News that you needed news and Adion.
Speaker 7 (02:46):
It's Sports Fix with Dancy Waldegrave.
Speaker 2 (02:50):
Right now our news Talk ZB by former Black Cap
coach Mike Hessen. Mike, welcome to the show. I trust
you well after we've been away for quite some time,
haven't you.
Speaker 8 (03:00):
You're always nice to be back. Yeah, yeah, pleasure. It's
a shame where we're talking about the World Cup, which
we're not involved in anymore. But sometimes sometimes that happens,
doesn't it. We've done at seven in a row, so
I guess we have to crash out sometimes.
Speaker 2 (03:14):
It doesn't make it any easier. And I suppose when
you look back and you look at the team that's there,
this was not a poor team. These are very good
professional cricketers, like they'd be hurting more than we are.
I suppose First up, can you put your finger on
what didn't quite go right for the black Caps over
there in the windys Oh.
Speaker 5 (03:34):
I look, there was a number of factors.
Speaker 8 (03:35):
I mean, just going back to your original Pointum in
trim Bolt was first to m that he thought that
it was probably one of the best T twenty squads
he's been involved with heading into a World Cup. So
clearly they were confident and there's no doubt even just
listening to them speak at the end of the World
Cup they are absolutely devastated it, you know, and not
carrying on and going as far as they they'd like
to go. So look, I mean the batting is probably
(03:57):
the main thing, isn't it. I mean it's a tough
place to go, the West Indies, that the even in America,
the pictures have been variable, to say the least. And
I guess when you arrive so many batsmen aren't in
great touch. It's hard to hit the ground running, and
we certainly didn't hit the ground running with the bat
that's for sure.
Speaker 2 (04:14):
Well, everybody's on the same deck, aren't they. I suppose
that argument always gets raised everyone's dealing with the same
conditions or is that too simplastic?
Speaker 9 (04:22):
Mic, No, it's not.
Speaker 8 (04:23):
It's just that if you're like if you were hadn't
played a lot of cricket and you went to India
and you found yourself on a flat one and you
could train on flat pitches, you could easily find form.
Whereas if you do that and you haven't played a
lot of cricket and then you go to the West Indies,
where you know you can't really train and the pitches
are up and down, it makes it really challenging to
find any form of rhythm.
Speaker 5 (04:44):
That said, yeah, you're right.
Speaker 8 (04:46):
The opposition absolutely, they you know, they have to plan
the same surface. But to be fair, both the opposition
those first two games had some warnut games as well
and actually arrive with a with a bit of form
under their belt and a bit of time in the middle.
Speaker 2 (04:59):
There's been a lot of conversation around the lack of
preparation for varying reasons through the black cap side. Is
that an easy enough target say this is why things
didn't work out, the team simply weren't prepared.
Speaker 8 (05:13):
I don't think it's just like that, As I said,
I think you've arrived at a tournament where you've had
a number of your players haven't from a batting point
of view. You know a number of your batsmen haven't
played any cricket at all for two three months in
some instances. Now, that's hard to just come out of bat,
you know, and with some rhythm. And we saw came
Williamson do that a couple of times. But as I
alluded to before, they were on very good surfaces. If
(05:35):
you come out of no cricket to come on to
a wicket, that's really challenging. As I said, you just
can't find your rhythm. And New Zealand had to be fair.
You know, Russian probably had one score in India. You know,
he was and he was probably played the most amount
of cricket other than other than Darryl Mitchell. Outside of that,
you Finellens, your Conways, you Williamson's even you, you're Glenn Phillips.
(06:00):
Those guys hadn't batted in a game for well some
of them three months.
Speaker 5 (06:05):
Now.
Speaker 8 (06:05):
To think that you're just going to be able to
rock up against Afghanistan in Guyana and be able to
turn it on, it's just not going to happen.
Speaker 5 (06:13):
And you know, I'm sure they were aware of that.
Speaker 8 (06:16):
I'm just not sure what options they had in terms
of alternative arrangements.
Speaker 2 (06:20):
Trent Bolt, What an astonishing career that man has had.
When you look back when he first started, he got
used as a bowling machine over Australia. I know that's
a long time ago now, but blossomed into one of
our greats. It looks like he's not going to be
involved anymore, although you never know, but I think he's
called time on his international career. You look back and
a fleet, you've worked with him a lot. That guy
(06:41):
is quite something else. What a standout for New Zealand.
Speaker 8 (06:44):
Yeah, an exceptional career and you know he deserves all
the bullets and recognition that he gets. I mean, remember
when Trent first came on board with New Zealand, he
was an exceptional New bull bowler. But outside of that,
you know he's quite limited and the skills he had,
and you know he's continued to work and develop over
his game and in those sort of fifteen sixteen years
(07:05):
that he's been involved in the International Games, he's now
a better bowler than than what he has at any
stage throughout his career, probably a more complete bowler. He
might have been quicker at certain times, but he's the
most complete bowler at the moment that he can be,
and we will really miss him. You know, that combination
bolts Soudi, as I said, with the ability they swing
(07:27):
at the opposite direction, so all the cross breezes at
all the grounds around the world.
Speaker 5 (07:31):
They're just an awesome combination.
Speaker 8 (07:33):
So we might find some other right armors, but I
can't see any other left arms that swing the ball
into the right hand is sort of floating around New
Zealand at the moment, so hopefully, hopefully one of them
pops up. But he will be missed, and we certainly
cheerish the time that we had.
Speaker 7 (07:47):
Him dissecting the sporting agenda. It's Sportsfax with Dancy Waldgrave.
Speaker 2 (07:55):
One of the more interesting and let's face it, divisive
characters in New Zealand Sport has announced the return to
the octagon today. Former middleweight champion in the UFC, Israel Adusna,
is coming back to try and pick up his strap
that he lost in controversial circumstances in September last year
when Sean Strickland beat Israel, and it was a unanimous decision,
(08:19):
all three judges scoring the forty nine forty six, so
he's been licking his wounds for the last little while.
He's decided now is a time to come back. It's
UFC three h five in Perth against Dricus du Place.
Israel is definitely a character and he doesn't appeal to everyone.
His sport doesn't appeal to everyone. He's been forthright in
(08:42):
his opinions around New Zealand, around living in New Zealand,
and around the attitude toward him from various media organizations
and the government. I might add I don't think he's
made a whole lot of friends outside of UFC, but
I don't think that matters. He is a guy who
speaks his mind. He doesn't mind saying exactly what he thinks.
(09:06):
He's unrepentant and what he says. And the most important
thing with Israel is he's achieved something that no New
Zealander has even come close to doing. He's arguably the
most well known sportsperson produced by New Zealand slash Nigeria. Globally,
everybody knows who Israel Dusna is and his success has
(09:28):
paved the way for a long line of young UFC
fighters out of the enormously impressive and successful city kickboxing
gym for these guys to turn up and forge a
career in mixed martial arts. It is a new option,
that is a new energy for a lot of young fighters,
for a lot of young men and women who choose
(09:50):
to make their career in one of the most brutal
sports there is. And all this, I believe comes down
to a guy called Israel. Dusna love him or hate him.
He's back in the octagon and Perth at UFC three
oh five. And as much as I find some of
his attitude questionable, he has box office gold and I'll
(10:12):
always peel off the notes to watch this guy get
busy with an opposition.
Speaker 7 (10:16):
The Chamber is now in session on Sportsfix.
Speaker 5 (10:22):
That's well.
Speaker 2 (10:22):
Welcome into the chamber to Elliott Smith, mister Rugby here
at News Talk ZB. Do you mind that tag?
Speaker 9 (10:28):
I'll take it. I'll take whatever tag, okay.
Speaker 2 (10:31):
Elliott Smith GB joins us here in the chamber looking
at some of the big sports stories of the day.
So the black Caps departed the T twenty World Cup.
They departed with a bang, But they spent the whole
tournament whimpering, didn't.
Speaker 9 (10:44):
They And they were gone a few days ago. But
it's rather cruel. They had to just keep on playing
quite funny actually to an extent against Papa New Guinea
and you ganded two teams that were always going to
be roadkill in the way of the black Caps. But
what a deflating campaign it has to be for the
black Caps missing out on the Super Eight and they're
on a very early plane home from what they will
(11:05):
be expecting to be. And I think most of New
Zealanders expect we've been treated and we does for how
many years of success and while they, you know, won
the World Test Championship, got very close to winning World
Cups as well, and the ODI format, perhaps that golden
generation is just now over and we need to prepare
(11:25):
ourselves the fact that we could be in for a
bit of a dark winter hit.
Speaker 2 (11:29):
I stare at my scoreboard that I've got printed out
on the wall of my house from the World Test Championship,
because whatever happens, we've still got that. And when you
look at the decade, it has been a golden era.
I know we're upset, I know we want to complain,
but really this team has provided some terrific entertainment over
the last ten years.
Speaker 9 (11:47):
Yeah, they have and I think we need to be
grateful for that. But at the same time, looking and
going perhaps you know.
Speaker 2 (11:53):
Some of the journalists don't.
Speaker 9 (11:55):
Yeah, some of the tactics that this World Cup probably
left a little bit to be desired. It fels like
they're playing a conservative form of T twenty compared to
some of the other nations out the Glenn Phillips is
aboutting deep down the order. He's the most explosive batsman.
You want him involved for as many of the possible
overs as you can get him, and they buried him
down at what's six or thereabouts and a couple of
(12:18):
those matches. So I just don't quite get it. I
think they are too conservative, and maybe the time has
come to separate out some of those coaching roles and
maybe look at more specialists across each format, because it
feels like, yah, as I say, too conservative.
Speaker 2 (12:31):
Gary Stead and came Williamson. Of course it's going to
be conservative. That's the nature of the way they approach
the side. They don't go too high, they don't go
too low. They just soldier on right.
Speaker 9 (12:40):
Which as we said, has been the hallmark of their
success for a number of years. They got themselves out
of tight squeezes, low scoring World Test Championship Final, low
scoring One Day World Cup Final in twenty nineteen, they
applied the squeeze both. And you know, New Zealand has
often had to get by on tactics rather than complete
out and out talent, which a number of other nations
have got compared to New Zealand. But it feels like
(13:02):
at the moment some of the tactics leave a little
bit to be desired. And that's where we've prided ourselves
on for for so many years across this great generation.
Speaker 2 (13:09):
Right, that's like that one up finished. Let's ignore that. Now,
let's move from the war to Saturday night. The Blues
have sold out Eden Park, but Chiefs are coming up
the road. This is going to be outrageously good. Eden
Park as a full house is something to behold.
Speaker 9 (13:23):
That's right, and look everyone can criticize it when it
is half full or a quarter full or whatever it
might be. In the crowd for the Brumbies game last
week was very poor, but there were weather reasons and
various things that combined with that sold out Blues Chiefs
that's exactly what you want, huge rocking crowd. The Chiefs
have found their form. The Blues have been top of
their form all season long. Remember I sold out a
(13:44):
couple of years ago for the Blues Crusaders. Fine, they
didn't get how could I fil They didn't get the
ending they wanted that night. Maybe they won't on Saturday.
But great to see the crowd come out, get those
tickets out the gate and get the fans through. It's
gonna be great.
Speaker 2 (13:56):
Well, yeah, let's look at this because the Chiefs last
year peaks too early, were disappointed beaten by the Crusaders
the year before. You could say the same thing happened
with the Blues. You're a rugby man. Look at the
Chiefs and the Blues and their trajectory. Who's on the
way to peak? Which way does this work? Because I'd
say the four pack battle is going to be exceptional.
Speaker 9 (14:15):
That's what you buy your ticket for. The Chiefs might
have time they run into perfection. You know, we we've
been banging away on Rugby Director our podcast a weeks
saying the Chiefs are even going to rise to you know,
do anything. It felt like they're just in second gear
all season long. Now it looks like they found at
big time and maybe peaking at the right time. They
were hurt last year by the fact that they did
peak too early and didn't control things in the final,
(14:36):
saying you gotta lose one to win one.
Speaker 2 (14:37):
More.
Speaker 9 (14:37):
The Blues and Chiefs have both lost to the last
two finals, so someone's going to be happy on the
weekend and someone's going to have lost two finals in
three years. I suspect the Blues at home may just
be too good, but and the Chiefs maybe it's left.
They'll run a little too late to get into form.
I don't know, but I think the Blues will win it.
Speaker 2 (14:52):
Damn me to wear a Crusaders jump into the final. No,
don't just leave.
Speaker 9 (14:56):
No, I wouldn't do that.
Speaker 2 (14:57):
Still quickly about the Warriors. R t s is the
return of the center enough to lift this Warriors team
who were pretty poor last weekend.
Speaker 9 (15:08):
They were so disappointing fourteen they'll up against the Storm
and then just completely stopped playing rugby league. Wasn't great.
I didn't think. Look it's a bootsnow. Doubt to the
back line coming in for Rocco Berry this weekend is
a huge boost to the Warriors and the way they
want to play. We've got some of those pieces back.
Obviously not going to have a cook cape ball this
week because he's an origin Campmache Barn. It's eighteenth man
(15:28):
for New South Wales, so you add him man, you
take a couple of pieces out. But I think it
has to be a boost. But attack wise, after they
got to fourteen, they'll up just evaporated on the weekend.
I don't know what went wrong and they've got to
try and find that and put some more schoolboard pressure
on teams this weekend. The Titans aren't too much chopped,
but they beat the Warriors last time. I didn't that
mount smart, so they can cause a few issues.
Speaker 2 (15:49):
And finally, terrible news this morning for us all to
wake up to Connor garden Bashop died. Awful news for
everybody concerned in the rugby community, the wider community as well.
No one likes to read of a young father who
passes away so early.
Speaker 9 (16:05):
No, simply awful news to see this morning. And what
can you say other than thoughts with Connor garden Bashup's family,
his friends, his teammates and everything like that. Just yeah,
absolutely devastating and thinking of those poor young girls that
he's the dad too, So you're thinking of him and
his family at the moment.
Speaker 2 (16:22):
And on that, Elliot Smithy, thank you very much for
joining us in the chamber pleasure.
