I looked at my prop my builds, I honestly wouldn't
(01:37):
change anything.
Speaker 3 (01:38):
I've been really enjoying.
Speaker 4 (01:39):
The process, feel super confident in my ability where I

Ethan blackadt A Summer, Penny, Female, Luke Jacobson, Dalton Papoali,

t J. Pettinada and Cortez Raatima. The halves are Boden
Barrett and Damien McKenzie. Jordi Barrett, Rico, Joanni Anton, Lennart
Brown and Billy Proctor are the midfielders and the outside
(03:03):
backs Stephen Petefetter, Caleb Clark, Immoni Nudawa, Sever Reese and
Mark to Layer. It's a pleasure to welcome to the
Sports Fixed podcast All Blacks assistant coach Jason Holland JAS
thanks for taking the time for a chat. What was
the process and how did you settle on these thirty
two names.
Speaker 4 (03:20):
Yeah, she's been a long process right from January. We're
really clear and around our roles as coaches, had position
groups that we were watching intently, mine being the midfield,
and so you had an opportunity all through the all
through Super Rugby.
Speaker 5 (03:37):
To to just watch.
Speaker 4 (03:39):
I was watching twelves and thirteens for every team, going
through them pretty closely on a Monday Tuesday, and you
just roll over from week to week looking at all
the midfielders.
Speaker 5 (03:47):
So it's been a pretty thorough process.
Speaker 4 (03:50):
We'd come together every month or so and present back
to the other coach and what we've seen and who's
in the who we think is in the hunt, and
staying pretty open on and being challenged by the other
coaches as to what they're seeing. So it's been a
great process over the last six months.
Speaker 5 (04:06):
And yeah, she sent a.
Speaker 4 (04:08):
Little bit over the last couple of weeks obviously, and
that's where we've ended up.
Speaker 2 (04:11):
Were you allocated a certain number of midfielders. They did,
Razis say, okay, Jase, you've got four spots or was
it fluid?
Speaker 5 (04:19):
It was fluid all the way through.
Speaker 4 (04:20):
We always knew from a midfield point of view, did
either be four or five and that was you know,
dependent on how the what the balance of the rest
of the backs look like. But you know, finishing up
with four and there might be potential when the squad
goes to thirty six for after the first three games
to we'll see if the another midfielder is one of
(04:41):
those that's added.
Speaker 2 (04:42):
Billy Proctor is one of the young capped players, a
player you know well from your time as Hurricane's head coach.
I mean, it must be a really nice feeling for
you to be able to name him and you in
as part of your first all black squad that you're
involved in. How have you assessed Billy's progress across this
season and the time you spent with him as well?
Speaker 5 (05:01):
Yeah?
Speaker 4 (05:01):
Look, I think you just couldn't he just kept being
in the doordown, didn't he? Billy all through the Super Rugby?
Obviously I knew him from the Hurricanes. I knew what
he could do. But this week in, week out. He
performed for the Hurricanes added to his game. I feel
in this year as attacking game, you know, definitely saw
(05:21):
pace and power and line breaks in his game. He's
always been a really solid defender and works as socks off,
but real rounded performance this year, weekend, week out and
really fits the way that this team will play.
Speaker 2 (05:35):
While you were given, as you've outlined your specific areas,
were you able to also chime in and other places
like I'm not suggesting that you had anything to do
with the front rowers, for example, but were you able
to talk about the back three perhaps or all the halves.
Speaker 4 (05:49):
There's lots of chiming in this group. Don't worry about that. Yeah, no, Look,
we all had to go like you know, obviously myself
and Leon and Scotty. With a bit more in the backspace,
we'd still be challenging forward selections around the attack and
D spaces, you know, around tackler, around carry around, work,
create all those sorts of things. So, as I said,
(06:11):
every time you present it back and where you're at
as the season went through, the next part was sitting
and have the challenge and the questions thrown acture around
where you're at and let's see some clips and those
sorts of things. So, yeah, we all had all had
in put in and it was good to get to
the final.
Speaker 5 (06:27):
Good to get to today.
Speaker 2 (06:29):
Absolutely when you are looking at a player who hasn't
played for the All Blacks before, and Billy Proctor, we've
talked about Cortez lot to my Wallace, to Tee Puzzily
or Tossi George Bell. What gives you confidence that that
player will be able to make the step up?
Speaker 5 (06:42):
Yeah, Look, I think the consistent performance is a big one.
Speaker 4 (06:47):
You see the traits of their game and how they play,
and and you know, you think around how you want
to play and what's important, and it comes back to
some of the real simple things around the game and
around the collision zone and the ability to work and
then some of the technical bits.
Speaker 5 (07:01):
But yeah, I think they've all.
Speaker 4 (07:03):
Sort of shown over over a good period that you know,
they've got a lot of those real core basic things
that we think you need to win international games of.
Speaker 2 (07:13):
Footing and no room for another player I know you
rate very highly. And that's Ruben Love, who had a
very good season for the Hurricanes. A lot of people
were talking about him as a possible All Black not
this time, but do you sense that Ruben Love will
wear a black jersey one day?
Speaker 5 (07:28):
Yeah? A lot.
Speaker 4 (07:28):
Rubs has a has a really good year as well,
and it's not really a case of what a lot
of people, including Rubs, can't do. It's more that there's
some The competition to be an All Black back three
player as massive and as it should be. So Rubs
has had a great year, is progressing really nicely and
he can be pretty proud of what he's done through super.
Speaker 2 (07:51):
How are you enjoying being an All Blacks assistant coach, Elfy?
Speaker 5 (07:53):
Yeah, it's cool. It's been a long time getting players.
Speaker 4 (07:56):
We had a non final this week last week out
at nz CS and at the Hut and it was
great to get the whistle and get on the field
and rather than be watching footage and in trying to
see what viewer is going to watch it on from
the comput you know, it was better to get out
on the field and get a bit wet and get
amongst it.
Speaker 5 (08:12):
So yeah, we'll see. It's it's all go from now
and he's exciting.
Speaker 2 (08:17):
And just to finish, how much of a sense of
excitement do you have as a coaching group that now
you do get your hands on these players, you can
get on the grass with them and you can start
plotting for England, for Fiji and for the Rugby Championship.
Speaker 4 (08:28):
Yeah, it is great because the plotting for England has
started quite a while ago, and to a degree, you
can only have so many discussions and watch so much
footage as coaches. You just want to get into it.
So that time has come and we can put all
the things we've talked around over the last few months
into play and jump and jump into it with the boys.
Speaker 2 (08:48):
Exciting time for you, for the coaches, for the players. Jas,
thanks so much for taking the time for a chat.
Speaker 5 (08:52):
Pleasure is always bindy. Thank you.
Speaker 2 (08:53):
That is all Blacks assistant coach with responsibility for the
midfield backs Jason Holland joining us on the Sports Fixed podcast.
Speaker 1 (09:01):
This is Sports Fix, your daily does of sports news.
How news talks heavy.
Speaker 2 (09:07):
Even with some time to think about it, I'm not
exactly sure what to think about the Warriors over the weekend.
Sixty six points to six. Even saying those words in
that scoreline again, it almost seems surreal, absolutely inexplicable, almost
impossible to explain. Even with the benefit of hindsight, the
joint biggest defeat in the history of the club, equalling
(09:29):
the loss to the Storm a couple of years ago.
But you think about that game, it was against a
team that was top of the comp against a comparatively
weak Warrior's side during the COVID period when there was
all sorts of disruption. The defeat on Saturday was to
the team at the bottom of the NRL Ladder, and
the Warriors team was pretty solid. You look at the
names nickol Kluksta two of us a check was back,
(09:52):
Adam Pompey, Montoya Johnson, Fanua, Blake, Egan, Ford Harris. They
were all there, effectively the core of the same group
of players who finished in the top four last season.
Try and make some sense of that. It's not terminal, obviously,
it's not the end of the season. Game is only
worth two points, so it's only two points dropped. But
the nature of this might leave a couple of scars
(10:15):
and cast some doubt into the minds of players and
particularly fans about whether this team is actually a top
eight proposition. Look, there are still eleven rounds to go,
including a couple of buys so there's four points straight
away and the Warriors are still just three points outside
the top eight. So it's certainly not the end of
the season by any stretch of the imagination, but man,
(10:38):
do they need to make some changes and improvements quickly
before the Broncos hit down on Saturday, fresh off thereby
and needing wins to make their own push into the
top eight. How they rebound from this will be very,
very interesting and instructive. It's a huge test for Andrew Webster,
the biggest of his time as head coach of this
(10:58):
club for sure.
Speaker 1 (11:00):
The Chamber is now in session on Sportsfix.
Speaker 2 (11:04):
On the Sports Fix podcast. Let's hop inside the Chamber
and kick around this all black squad, joined by a
head of news talks AB Sport Clay Wilson Clay. When
you heard the thirty two names read out and the
time you've had to digest those thirty two names, what
do your main takeaways?
Speaker 3 (11:18):
Well, a couple of big names to jump that jumped
out and a couple of names that weren't there that
jumped out as well. You look at the obvious Bolter
genuine bolt this year and Passily or Tossi from the
Hurricanes who's who, I'm sure is someone that you know
a bit more about than a lot of other people,
being a Hurricanes men, Piney, But I mean that really
is a genuine bolter, isn't it? An among these five
(11:38):
uncapped players, And then you look at the likes of
Wallace Attiti who has made it but at the expense
of Hoskins Stitutu, and that won't go down well north
of the Bombays.
Speaker 2 (11:50):
I tell you that just on Tossy, You're right, I
have seen a lot of them. He played every single
game for the Hurricanes this year, but only six of
those were starts, ten off the bench, and he and
Tyrel Lomax kind of chopped and changed certainly towards the
back end of the season. And that number three Jersey.
And speaking to Jamie McIntosh, who a former All Black
(12:12):
himself and Southland Stags legend now forwards coach with the Hurricanes,
he rated Pasilio Tossi right up there with Tyrel Lomax.
So this one come as a surprise to Jamie McIntosh,
But I must admit it did come as a surprise
to me as well. He was a true bolter.
Speaker 3 (12:27):
Yeah, and it's not often these days you get I
can't remember, you know, a lot in recent years where
we've had a real bolt out of left field like this.
But listening to Scott Robertson speak after the announcement, he
had a great line where he said, you know, for
Jason Ryan, it was like love at first sight. Here's
this huge man, hugely mobile, great skill set, he said.
Scott Robinson said, it was something like at a mass
(12:47):
for Jason Rye. And you know he just fell in
love with Pasily or Tossi and they've obviously seen something
in him that they think he can translate to test level.
Speaker 2 (12:55):
And as often happens, it is the guys whose names
aren't called out that make you raise your eyebrows. And
you talked about Hoskins Setutu there left out, presumably in
favor of Wallace Setiti. I thought that Reuben might be
in the squad. As I understand it, the first fives
are McKenzie and Bowden Barrett, so Stephen Petafetta is seen
(13:16):
as a fallback option mainly with Body as well. Caleb
Clarke and Morning Nadowa, sever Reese Marktalaya are all really
out and outwingers. I thought they might find a place
for Ruben Love, but I guess there are only thirty
two seats on the bus if you like that.
Speaker 3 (13:30):
Outside backs mix is always interesting, isn't it, in terms
of what they go for in their starters and players
that can play in multiple positions quite often either first
five and fullback or fullback and wing. So a lot
of you know, a lot of debate around versatility there,
and they've obviously opted to not go with Ruben Love
or Sean Stevenson who's been a standout for the Chiefs
(13:51):
as well. But I mean, you can't really argue with
any of those names that are in there and that
outside backs mix, can you. And that's one of the
things I think in New Zealand, I always think about
Number seven's loose forwards and outside backs.
Speaker 5 (14:01):
There's always just.
Speaker 3 (14:02):
A plethora of quality to pick from in those areas.
Speaker 2 (14:05):
Most people thought they'd pick four locks, particularly given the
fact that Patrick Tweypo lot to you know, rose like
Lazarus to even play on Saturday night and then was
in a moon boot straight away afterwards. So clearly isn't
one hundred percent Scott Barrett obviously and Captain congratulations to him.
To Paul Vai. There was a lot of mail around
about Sam Dowry, and I believe he might be added
to the squad as cover. But just the three lockforwards,
(14:26):
do you reckon that? So they could pick six props
and six Lucy's I think.
Speaker 3 (14:30):
So, you know, the modern game, especially you look at
the likes of South Africa and the northern hemisphere sides,
they're such big, powerful nations now, and of course New
Zealand we've always been renowned for being, you know, a
more open team that plays with the ball in the
air a bit. So perhaps they're trying to just really
make sure the set piece that that part of the game,
that the Ford pack is really solidified with the props
(14:53):
and the loose forwards. So and I guess you know,
these days lineout options is the other thing you know
when you look at locks, isn't it. And a lot
of those loose forwards take a lot of lineout ball
these days, so they're obviously comfortable that two or three
of those players in that loose forward mix could come
out and be options for them at lineouts on a
regular occasion.
Speaker 2 (15:12):
No surprises in the three half backs. Christy Petanada, I
look at Noah Hotham, his time will probably come for
laugh like a Tarva.
Speaker 3 (15:19):
I'm not sure did enough. It felt like those three,
didn't it, Clay, Yeah, I think so. I think the
halfbacks pretty much picked themselves. I mean, she just feels
like such a hole without it a name like Aaron
Smith there, doesn't it. But you have to be hugely
impressed with what Cortez Ratima has done this season. I
wouldn't be surprised if he gets the start and finlay.
Christie Praps didn't start the season that well and then
(15:40):
had an injury. Has come on a little bit towards
the back end, but also has experience under his belt,
doesn't he. So I think in that half back mix
you have to say that none of those players are
undeserving of their selection.
Speaker 2 (15:52):
And no surprise at the naming of Scott Barrett's skipper
for you, that always felt likely as well.
Speaker 3 (15:57):
Yeah, I think so he appears. I mean to be honest,
I would have been happy either way whether it was
Scott Barrett or Artie Save. I think they're both going
to do a great job. But you look at the
great all captains we've had in recent times. Richie mccare
even Kieren Reid. You throw him in there. He's very
much of that kind of mold, isn't he like a
He's a leads by actions not words type of player,
(16:19):
and just really you watch him play, you listen to
him talk, and you just think he sounds like all
Black captaincy material. Artie Sevier has been named as a
vice captain I think alongside is it Jordi Barrett? Yes so,
And I think there's no way that Artie Sevia doesn't
hold a huge amount of mone or among that group anyway.
It's very much off field I think anyway, a spiritual
(16:41):
leader for this team. But you look at Scott Barrett
in terms of an on field leader, perhaps they thought
he might just have the edge in the on field department.
Speaker 2 (16:47):
Yeah, it's a pretty exciting thirty two man squad. As always,
there are disappointed players and discussion points for those who
aren't there, but for the thirty two who are. They'll
now gather and prepare for the first Test match of
the year against England under the roof in Dunedin on
Saturday week. Always enjoy getting under the roof with you
in the chamber, Clay. Thanks indeed, always a pleague.
Speaker 5 (17:06):
Thanks Bonny.
