Speaker 1 (00:09):
You're listening to a podcast from News Talks at b
follow this and our wide range of podcasts now on iHeartRadio.
Speaker 2 (00:17):
This is Sportsfix Howard by News Talks.
Speaker 3 (00:20):
It be Hello and welcome into another edition of the
Sports Fixed podcast. I'm Jason Pine alongside me today as
per usual Darcy water Grave.
Speaker 4 (00:28):
No change here unless I decide to take a holiday,
which happens from time to time. We're allowed a break, right, well,
I think we are. We're at the start of a
long weekend for some people.
Speaker 3 (00:36):
Anyway, I know others are burning the midnight oil and
the midday oil as it were. It's June twenty seven
today on the pod.
Speaker 5 (00:44):
Well, euro as the.
Speaker 3 (00:45):
EUROS European Football Championship. We've done and dusted with group
play into the last sixteen. You've got a fairly incisive
football mind to chattooed us.
Speaker 4 (00:54):
Yeah, Fred de Yong, he's going to lean towards the
Netherlands because he can't help himself. He's pretty much been
diet orange since the start of this tournament. But he'll
give us a skinny on the round of sixteen. Now
we've got through the absolute chaos of qualifying.
Speaker 6 (01:07):
Because even you Jason Pine.
Speaker 4 (01:09):
Who loves football so much, would have looked at it
and got a screaming headache.
Speaker 6 (01:12):
Even for the final fixtures this morning. Very difficult. I
suppose it happens when you've got four hundred teams at
the tournament.
Speaker 3 (01:19):
Right, that's right, And when you've got the third place
teams going through or some of them, it requires a
calculator on occasion. I know you've got some thoughts on
motorsport and we hop inside the chamber as well. We
want to kick around a few issues, including the Warriors
Broncos game on Saturday.
Speaker 5 (01:33):
Just how important is this game for their season? Let's
get into it.
Speaker 3 (01:37):
In other news, updating you on some of the big
sports stories around today. England have beat in New Zealand
by nine wickets in the opening One day Women's Cricket
International and Durham the White Ferns all out for one
fifty six and the thirty fourth over Brook Holliday top
scoring with fifty one, betting at number six, the greatest
start on our tour, but then obviously one fifteenth on
(02:02):
a pitch like that, in an outfield like that, it's
pretty started.
Speaker 4 (02:05):
Going wrong for us.
Speaker 3 (02:06):
An upset to complete the round of sixteen at the
European Football Championship. All eyes on the referee afters the
whistle and his historic nights. Take a bow everyone out
there from Georgia, the Georgians through to the knockouts day
just for the first time, upsetting Group AP winners Portugal
to nil to qualify as one of the best third
(02:27):
place teams and to basketball. And for a second straight year,
a freak player has landed the number one pick in
the NBA Draft.
Speaker 2 (02:36):
Atlanta Hawks select Zachary.
Speaker 7 (02:39):
Who's usher from the Leo France and Francis jail fur
arm Press.
Speaker 1 (02:47):
It's Sports Fix with Jason Hine and Dusty Waldegrave.
Speaker 4 (02:51):
I'll join now in the Sports Fixed podcast by Fred Dejon,
former All White, all round good guy and of course
football pundit as well.
Speaker 6 (02:58):
Fred, how are you right?
Speaker 4 (02:59):
Let's look at the eight games ahead of US, Switzerland
and Italy.
Speaker 6 (03:04):
Germany take on Denmark. That's how we start.
Speaker 7 (03:07):
Absolutely, the Swiss have been very good. They have been
probably one of the surprise packages of the tournament on
how well they've played.
Speaker 2 (03:16):
And you know they.
Speaker 7 (03:17):
Are in a difficult group Germany, Hungary, Scotland. They've navigated
that through quite comfortably. And they come up against an
Italian team that one of the most exciting games in
the history.
Speaker 2 (03:33):
Of the tournament.
Speaker 7 (03:33):
I think last kick of the game, ninety eighth minute
to get themselves into second place in the group and
you know, broke Croatian hearts. But that'll be a good
game and one that I think the Swiss will go
in with a heck of a lot of confidence because
Italy aren't showing haven't showne too much in a striking capacity.
Then the Germans have been probably one of the picks
(03:56):
of the tournament, very very very good, very fluid, and
I think they'll have too much firepower for a Danish
team that has played sort of well in patches but
hasn't really strung together convincing performance and also struggles to
score goals. I think they think scored two goals in
the in the first three games. So yeah, one that
I think Germany will be very comfortable with the.
Speaker 4 (04:17):
Road home if they're bringing something whatever that might be
Slovakia in England's way four o'clock Monday morning.
Speaker 2 (04:25):
Difficult, No, I don't think so.
Speaker 7 (04:27):
I think at the moment anything's difficult for this English team.
They're just stuttering along everyone's waiting for them to actually
put in a performance that justifies their favorites tag going
into the tournament, they've been dour, slow, ponderous, all these
(04:47):
sort of adjectives to describe the way they're playing the game.
And unless they can sort of release the shackles and
get the best out of the quality of players that
they have on the pitch, you know, then they're going
to come into more come in with more flak from
their supporters.
Speaker 2 (05:02):
Their coach is going to be pilloried from from from
on high, from back home in England. But I think
they'll still have too much for Slovakia.
Speaker 4 (05:12):
Do you think Georgia can take some of the energy
from that win this morning and lay it down in
front of the Spanish?
Speaker 2 (05:18):
Yeah?
Speaker 7 (05:18):
How good was it? How good was Georgia this morning
against Portugal? You know, that was a tremendous effort from them,
you know, do a die for them to they had
to win.
Speaker 2 (05:26):
They did.
Speaker 7 (05:27):
Spain probably the pick of the teams in the tournament,
and Spain I think we'll go through quite comfortably. But
you know, regardless of that, Georgia's had their first international tournament.
They've had a fantastic tournament and they can. I think,
you know Spain, Spain have been really good. They also
haven't scored many goals, you know, a couple of one
(05:47):
no wins and two two three one win. I think
it was at Yes Spain. They strangle the life out
of the game, and I think they'll have way too
much quality for Georgia.
Speaker 4 (05:57):
Hey got the next match, and we like these these
trans border matches. So we're talking about the French taking
on the Belgians. This should be fantastic at a melting
pot of styles, of classes of players.
Speaker 7 (06:10):
Absolutely, and I think the Belgians will be absolutely kicking
themselves that. You know, they finished second in the group,
a group that they probably were looking comfortably when the
draw was made to go, yeah we should we should finish.
Speaker 2 (06:24):
Top of this this group.
Speaker 7 (06:25):
You know Slovakia remain in Ukraine, they would have gone, well,
we should definitely should finish top. They've finished second and
they've come up against co favorites France. You know, I
think Belgium were kicking themselves absolutely, but what a matchup.
I think the pick of the last sixteen games because
the French, they've also showne real quality. They've got one
(06:46):
of probably the best player in the world. And Mbappe,
although his noses are suffered, suffered through the tournament, and
you know they by rights they should have too much
quality for Belgium, but that will be the highest quality
game of the last sixteen.
Speaker 4 (07:04):
In Portugal, hoping that what happened today is not going
to pack them up against Slovenia seven o'clock Tuesday morning.
Speaker 7 (07:12):
Yeah, it just shows you like when a team has
already qualified, how just a little drop in quality, a
little drop in intensity really can bring them unstuck. And
Portugal are really poor against Georgia today. They need a rocket.
But you know Slovenia who you know, they are also
a team that weren't looking like they were going to
qualify and managed to do so with aniltle drawer against
(07:33):
against the English, so you know they'll be on on
cloud nine. Portugal should be too strong, but Slovenia showed
showed quite a lot against the English. But you know,
maybe the Portuguese will kick into gear.
Speaker 6 (07:45):
Neither one should run all over the top of from.
Speaker 7 (07:48):
Absolutely no doubt, and that's what we need to look
like we were up against England.
Speaker 2 (07:54):
Romania is way better.
Speaker 4 (07:56):
You get past them, You're not still like going back
to your Dutch roots.
Speaker 6 (08:00):
Why chance so your Fred? No, maybe not at all
if you painted your head.
Speaker 4 (08:05):
Orange for this class enough or it's got to the
last game of the round of sixteen Austria Turkey.
Speaker 6 (08:11):
Did anyone see that coming?
Speaker 7 (08:12):
I don't think anyone would have picked Austria in a
group with the Dutch and the French, that Austria would
come top of the group.
Speaker 2 (08:20):
But they have been excellent.
Speaker 7 (08:23):
It shows you what you can do when you dare
to attack and you dare to press and.
Speaker 2 (08:28):
You be brave with the ball.
Speaker 7 (08:30):
You know they've been Ralph Ranak, the coach, has done
a fantastic job with that group of players and they
fully deserve everything they've got so far in the tournament
because they've been probably the standout team of the second
tier so called second tier nations in the Cup. And
I think the loough Turkey have been you shown flashes.
I think Austria probably will edge that if you can.
Speaker 4 (08:52):
Fred Deyong, can you put your clogs and your tulips
in your pocket and look across based on current form,
who do you like for the final?
Speaker 7 (09:01):
I think coming out of so looking your head to
the semi finals You've probably got Netherlands or Australia against
Italy or England. And then on the on the other
side of that, I would say, you know, you got
a massive quarter final, probably Germany Spain, so either I
would probably pick the Spanish against the French. On the
other side in the semifinals, Who's to say I would
(09:23):
Prior to the tournament, I picked France to win the
whole thing. On what I've seen, probably the Spanish are
the form team of the competition, but I would say Spain,
England or Spain Holland final would probably be the most likely.
Speaker 2 (09:37):
Right.
Speaker 4 (09:37):
You can climb back in your win will now, thank
you very much for that, Fredi Young. Always a pleasure
in my friend. Do you look after yourself. Make sure
you drink plenty of water and have decent dozes during
the day so you can get through till Wednesday morning.
Speaker 2 (09:50):
Thanks for your time there. Long nights mate, and enjoyable
cheers mate.
Speaker 1 (09:55):
Dissecting the sporting agenda, It's Sports Fix with Jason Fine
and Darcy Walter.
Speaker 4 (10:00):
Grave wrote out rugby is important to sports fans in
New Zealand.
Speaker 6 (10:05):
Gregt as important to sports fans in New Zealand.
Speaker 4 (10:08):
We have a fine history sailing and a number of
different sports. But really, when push comes to shove, our
national sport is motorsport. It looks like Liam Lawson is
going to be picked to run Formula one twenty twenty
five onward. The rumors are abound that is the case.
We'll wait and see. That's the nature of life in
(10:28):
the paddock in Formula one. If you go back though
in time, with New Zealand's history in motorsport, it's impossible
not to believe that this is not our national sport.
Let's look at it in Formula one. Such luminaries as McClaren,
the team obviously still named after him, Chris Aimon, the
greatest driver never to win a Formula One championship and
(10:50):
the sole key you to do it, Denny Holm way
back in the sixties.
Speaker 6 (10:54):
There are many more, but these are the.
Speaker 4 (10:56):
Guys that stand out above all. You go to the
IndyCar Championship. Scott Dixon is on the casp of being
the most successful open wheel racer in American history, six
times Indy Car champ and he's sniffing at the hell.
Has become the most winningest driver in history as well.
There are a number of other players over there driving
(11:18):
at the moment, including Scott McLoughlin and Marcus Armstrong. On
the subject of Scott McLoughlin, he is one of four
men who have won the Australian Touring Car Championship the
supercars as it is called now. Shane van Gisberg has
picked up three titles. Jim Richards what a legend, has
picked up four titles, Scott mcglochlin three titles, Robbie Franzovic
(11:40):
and the Flying Brick at just the one, and of
course the icon that is Greg Murphy with that Bathurst
Lap of the Gods and a number of Kiwis have
been dominant or predominant in the Australian Supercar Championships. Leg
took to the World Endurance Championship, where a man by
the name of Brendan Hartley has won that championship four times.
(12:02):
He's picked up three victories in Laman as well. And
don't forget that was after his time Formula one who
was the guy just before Liam Lawson got us hooked
into it a couple of years back. Earl Bamba has
also won the World Endurance Championship. Let's not forget him
and rally Hayden Padden. No, he hasn't won a world championship,
(12:24):
but he did win around in Argentina. That is a
huge effort considering the dominance of the Europeans in rally
sport particularly, and of course the legend that is poss
and Born. What about bikes the great Ivan major, multi
world champion Barry Briggs and of course four times w
e X Motocross World champion Courtney Duncan. I don't believe
(12:47):
there is a sport that reflects our ingenuity, our effort
and our ability to win more than motorsport. We are
global champions and this is something we should be rightly
proud of.
Speaker 1 (12:58):
The Chamber is now in session on Sportsfix.
Speaker 3 (13:03):
Here we are inside the Chamber. One of my favorite
times of the Sports Fix podcast. I go I to
knows to nose voice to voice with Darcy Watergrave inside
the Chamber.
Speaker 5 (13:12):
Although I feel like you've got the upper hand.
Speaker 3 (13:14):
Today because we've got a couple of league topics to
talk and I know you can unpack these usually a
little bit more incisively than I can. So I'm going
to ask you this Saturday's game between the Warriors and
the Broncos off the back of what happened last week
against the Titans. Lest we forget how big a game
is this for the Warriors and for Andrew Webster.
Speaker 4 (13:33):
Well, you look at the Broncos and they're not exactly
in a great state either the way they've been playing,
even though they're ranked considerably higher on the table, so
they've got a lot to play for as well. It
is also a Veteran's Day on Saturday, so a number
of the old school are coming to watch this team,
so you'd hope they left the problem here. Even though
the Warriors aren't at a stage where they must win
(13:57):
the old must win, there's still a mathematical chance. It's
getting close to that, and they've got to eradicate what's
happened because we've seen one full game and a half
a game against Melbour and Storm with a team basically
went and sat in the stand and you can see
Andrew Webster. You can hear Andrew Webster and his frustration.
I'd suggest if they don't get the job done and
(14:18):
look like a proper integrated team up against the Brisbane Broncos,
some of the younger school who saw performed so well
Piney when some of the veterans weren't there will be,
I'd say aushed into the side, because I don't know
how long Andrew Webster can put up with that kind
of attitude.
Speaker 3 (14:35):
Right, Yeah, And this interested me greatly in the fact
that he's given these guys another chance. Only a couple
of changes ready when O Shawn Johnson's are not available
for player Dell and what Tennis Lesnie comes back, and
I think Mitch Bunnett's the other one. But other than
those three, it's the same team that lost by sixty
(14:55):
points to the Titans. So I don't know about you, Darspital,
I'd be hurting. I'd want to go out there and
they say, what, you're only as good or as.
Speaker 5 (15:03):
Bad as your last game.
Speaker 3 (15:04):
I'd want to get that last game out of my
mind as quickly as possible. So I kind back the
experienced guys to do the job. And I think you're right.
If they were to lose again on Saturday, I feel
like all bets are off as far as selection is concerned.
Speaker 4 (15:16):
The question, though, is where was that attitude in the
second half of the game against the Titans. They'd been
absolutely flushed in the first forty Where was that respect
that self respect thought them and the team and the
coach to actually turn around the second half and go
we are better than this.
Speaker 6 (15:32):
They got worse, piny and that's the scary thing.
Speaker 5 (15:35):
I think. That's it, isn't it.
Speaker 3 (15:36):
When you have a terrible first half, you think, well,
it can't possibly be as bad in the second. You know,
we'll try and win the second half. And that just
didn't happen. Just on that Actually a segways nicely into
what happened in Origin last night with New south Wales.
Speaker 5 (15:50):
What were they thirty.
Speaker 3 (15:51):
Four nil ahead at halftime, finished winning at thirty eight eighteen,
so at least them maroonn selfish is a bit of
pride in the second half.
Speaker 5 (15:58):
But was this a surprise that the New South Wales
got up like this?
Speaker 4 (16:01):
Interestingly, the New South Wales team are actually favorites going
into this, not by a great deal on the tab,
so people thought that they would bounce back after getting brutalized.
You remember after the seventh minute they were sort of
man and in rugby league it's very hard twelve feet thirteen.
Speaker 6 (16:18):
But they did show a lot of heart in that game.
Speaker 4 (16:21):
Madge McGuire absolutely hurting from that, bringing some players back
and Latrell Mitchell hasn't played he's been playing at fullback recently.
They got him and descend It was like, well, he
doesn't particularly like defense, how's this going to work? And
some that was an outrageous performance. But unlike the Warriors
what happened in the second half, the Queenslanders actually stood
(16:42):
up and tried to as Scott Razor Robinson put it,
put their shoulder through the opposition.
Speaker 3 (16:48):
Yeah, and now it sets up brilliantly the third and
final match. And I think we all love a decider,
don't we. When it comes to state of origin. You know,
a dead rubber if you can call it that, there
never really is one in origin. But when game three
is a decider, it makes them more exciting. July seventeen
in Brisbane, New South Wales haven't won a deciding third
game in Brisbane since two thousand and five, so looking
(17:09):
forward to seeing whether they can break that long running
duck in Queensland and Football enjoyed. Your chat with Freddie
always gives us plenty of food for thought. Have you
thought about who might be there at the business end
of the Euros or are you going to wait and
see what happens after the round of sixteen and maybe
the quarter of Vinyl.
Speaker 4 (17:26):
I do not come from any position to seriously predict
what's going on in the Euros except taking information being
a conduit, if you will, from other people around what
they think. I look at the home advantage, I look
at the nature of German football. I find it difficult
to go past.
Speaker 2 (17:45):
Then.
Speaker 4 (17:45):
I don't think anyone backs England because they've got a
history of not quite getting the job done, the French
lurking there or thereabouts. But piney, is there room for
an upset in this tournament because I think I've covered
off a couple of the better teams, right, But out
of the underlings, who would there be?
Speaker 3 (18:01):
Yeah, that's a very good question, and I wonder whether
England might be the recipient of that.
Speaker 5 (18:06):
They have been so average.
Speaker 3 (18:08):
Look, I'm not suggesting that Slovakia are in any way
favorite to beat England when they meet on Monday morning,
But you know what, given the way England have played,
that would not be beyond the realms of possibility. Haven't
it that England will probably scrapeer one.
Speaker 6 (18:22):
The time in their run they're time in their run?
Speaker 3 (18:26):
Yes, I look around and I think maybe Switzerland could
perhaps turnover it' aly the defending champions.
Speaker 5 (18:33):
There have been some good games.
Speaker 3 (18:34):
I mean even this morning we saw Georgia, the lowest
rank side at the tournament, beat Portugal, the number six
in the world.
Speaker 5 (18:42):
So upsets can and do happen.
Speaker 3 (18:45):
Yeah, we wait and see, of course after the round
of sixteen who goes through. And it's been it hasn't
been exactly a goal laden tournament, but it's been intriguing, nonetheless,
with enough to keep football fans and others mildly interested
in proceedings.
Speaker 6 (18:59):
The chambers, sorry, before the chamber got I got to
ask this.
Speaker 4 (19:03):
You know, this sport was the idea of putting all
these teams in the finals, conceiting what's happening in the
World Cup in the years to come.
Speaker 6 (19:10):
Did that work? Was it a smart idea?
Speaker 5 (19:13):
I don't think so.
Speaker 3 (19:14):
It's always natas when you've got the top two from
a group going through, and when you have you know,
when you have twenty four teams, six groups of four,
it's always a bit messy trying to get yourself into
a position where you have a round of sixteen and
they want the round of sixteen because more matches more
ticket revenue, more broadcast revenue. But if they simply stuck
to a quarter final situation again, they would have had
(19:36):
to divide groups up. So yeah, twenty four teams just
doesn't neatly work in a football context.
Speaker 4 (19:42):
But here we are all right. You can get out
of the chairman now, Jason. You tiredy it up, finish
it off and I'll escape to This.
Speaker 1 (19:48):
