Hello and welcome into a new week, welcome to a
new month, and welcome into a fresh episode of the
Sports Fixed podcast. I'm Jason Pine. On Monday, the first
of July. We're at the start of the first Test
week under the guidance of new All Blacks head coach
Scott robertson what can we expect in Dunedin under the
roof on Saturday night against England. Well, today on the
(00:42):
Sports Fix podcast really had the thoughts of one of
his assistant coaches, Scott Hanson, and also one of his
senior players and a man pretty well known to Raiser
from their time together at the Crusaders, and that is
veteran hooker Cody Taylor. Also on the podcast today in
the Chamber, Nathan Limb joins me to kick around the
bounce back ability of the Warriors, a bit of All
(01:03):
black stuff and the Euros as well. I've got some
thoughts on the Warriors too, and of course the latest
and sports who from across the globe.
Speaker 3 (01:10):
Let's get into it in other news. Let's start in
fact with.
Speaker 2 (01:15):
Some of the big sports stories kicking around in the
last twelve hours or so. England are through to the
quarterfinals of Euro twenty twenty four, but they left it very,
very very late against Slovakia this morning.
Speaker 4 (01:28):
Slovakia is so close to a fatless ware. Jude Bingham's
done it. He's turned under the five right to the.
Speaker 3 (01:40):
End of the gap.
Speaker 2 (01:41):
Right at the end is right. Slovakia led one mill
deep deep deep into added time before Jude Bellingham came
up with the bicycle kick that equalized the game. Into
extra time they went Harry Kane scored the winner. England
through to the quarterfinals where they will square off against Switzerland.
To the Austrian Formula One Grand Prix.
Speaker 1 (02:00):
Where's Russell, who has never even stood on the podium
here in Austria rounds the final cup of the Commers,
will launch himself.
Speaker 3 (02:08):
To the top half the.
Speaker 5 (02:09):
Rustram with Josh Russell wins the Austrian grab trie.
Speaker 2 (02:13):
And to Stage two of the Tour de France the
finish line in Bologna, Italy.
Speaker 1 (02:18):
It is a dream debut in the Tour de France.
Speaker 3 (02:22):
France have two wins in two days, a dream debut
Cavin vau Klan. When stage two.
Speaker 2 (02:29):
They have v Okland the winner of Stage two Tato
Pergacha though has taken the yellow jersey after two stages
us Anaminion.
Speaker 1 (02:37):
It's Sports Fix with Jason Lynd.
Speaker 2 (02:42):
This is the Sports Fix podcast and we're at the
start of the first test week for the All Blacks
of twenty twenty four. They will play England under the
roof in Dunedin on Saturday evening, the first of fourteen
test matches in twenty twenty four, under the guidance now,
of course, of new head coach Scott Robertson and his
team of assistance. Or it's a bit of excitement around
(03:05):
when the first test of the season is large, particularly
so given, as I say, the fresh regime in terms
of the coaching staff, a couple of new players, and yeah,
just a real sense of curiosity as to how the
All Blacks might go in twenty twenty four. Well, certainly
in the first test of it against in England team
(03:25):
that come in a pretty good form after a good
win over Japan on their way over to New Zealand.
The All Blacks had immedia session earlier on today managed
to catch up with a couple of a couple of people.
The first was Cody Taylor, who's been in the environment,
of course for a while now, the All Blacks environment
that is. I asked him how the first few days
in this All Blacks camp had been.
Speaker 4 (03:46):
There's been a lot of learnings.
Speaker 6 (03:49):
It's a lot of excitement and energy from the group,
especially the coaching. The coaching group there, there's probably been
chewing out the bit for six months now and it's
awesome to see them come in here and really own
their roles within the coaching group. You know, we've been
in this environment c s and to have this facility
(04:12):
has made that process a lot easier, not having any
given buses and stuff and really connect as a team.
Speaker 4 (04:17):
I've really enjoyed it.
Speaker 6 (04:18):
It has been tough at times, been a few long
nights of learning new things, but yeah, really looking forward
to building into this test week.
Speaker 7 (04:26):
How different is Raiser the All Blacks coach, from Raiser
the Crusaders coach.
Speaker 4 (04:32):
Uh, it's not a lot, I don't think.
Speaker 6 (04:37):
Obviously, the expectations a lot higher because you're now the
All Black coach and rightly so, you know this nation
prides itself on on being the great rugby nation, and
he gets the duty of leading it out there, leading
this team. But the way he's shown himself, he has
showed no difference to what has been in the past.
Speaker 7 (04:58):
And in terms of the hookers and the squad, yourself
obviously into far less experienced because how does that change
the dynamic and your role within the whole cohort?
Speaker 4 (05:09):
Uh yeah, you know, uh myself.
Speaker 6 (05:14):
And then we've got the Belly and the Suffo who's
been here before and has performed really well with Super Rugby,
and I feel like he's ready to get stuck into
a day. He's he's looking like a you know, bloody powerhouse.
And then there's Belly, who's just a ken and eager
young hooker who really wants to learn and he's got
(05:34):
the goods man, he's pretty special talent. And that's not
taking anything away from the work that he puts in.
So uh different, I suppose a little bit different.
Speaker 4 (05:44):
You know, you want to help those boys grow and
learn as quick.
Speaker 6 (05:47):
As they can, because when you're out there and his footy.
Speaker 4 (05:49):
It's a lot different. So do you mistakes?
Speaker 8 (05:51):
Ah?
Speaker 4 (05:53):
God, I love coals. I do if he's listening to
this a mate.
Speaker 2 (05:58):
That's Cody Taylor at the start of the teast week,
missing his old mate Dane Coles. I also spoke to
one of the new assistant coaches, Scott Hansen, formerly with
Scott robertson calls at the Crusaders, now an All Blacks
assistant coach and with specific responsibility for half backs and
first fives. He had I guess quite a big say
(06:18):
in the first fives and the half backs that were
chosen in the thirty two man squad. So I asked
Scott Hanson whether he would get a big say and
who actually played nine and ten on Saturday night against England.
Speaker 4 (06:31):
The boss is the boss.
Speaker 5 (06:32):
He gets to say, we'll get the ability to put
our thoughts to the boss. As a coaching group, we've
had some really open minded conversations around what that looks like.
At the end of the day, every Test will pick
the best team available to be the best that we
need to be on that weekend.
Speaker 7 (06:51):
The halfback one's really interesting. You've got an eighty Test veteran,
yes fin like Christy, who's been around the group for
a few years, and you've got a brand new guy
in courtesy. I'm interested to know how you might manage
the three of them across the three test matches.
Speaker 5 (07:04):
The key thing there around the management is how they
manage it.
Speaker 4 (07:09):
So what are there looks their weeks look like.
Speaker 5 (07:11):
How do they set the group up despite the tests numbers?
How do they lead during the week. So the other
things I'm looking at, I will say TJ his connection
with the group, his our ability to connect our game
around our defense and attack has been really good this week.
(07:34):
Young Cortez. Energy and excitement, a lot of smiles, massive
energy on the field and then with fun. He's just
the ultimate professional around consistency and giving the roles that
we need. So we have three very good halfbacks we
can choose from, just like we have three very good
tends we can choose from.
Speaker 7 (07:54):
Yeah, I just want to ask you about that as well.
So you dem Boden and still act it's the other
one that's you're alluding to there. So again, how do
you make these decisions around who gets which jersey and
who perhaps doesn't get a jersey.
Speaker 5 (08:07):
We look at the opposition, we look at their strengths,
opportunities for us, we look at the game we want
to play and then we slide on the ten. We
believe that's going to give us the outcome we need.
What I will say with Body coming in, sitting down,
the calmness, the clarity that it gives. Have been so
impressed with Body, his care for the group. He's a
(08:30):
proud All Black and I've really enjoyed being around Body
for me, which has been the first time that.
Speaker 2 (08:36):
Is Scott Hansen assistant coach with Scott Robertson in the
All Blacks environment. So yeah, right at the start of
the week you can tell a bit of excitement there
among some of the participants, the coaches and the players.
You also get the fill in they just can't wait
to get to Dunedin and get underway in Test Season
twenty beating of X.
Speaker 3 (08:54):
We've got just the ticket. It's Sports Vex now by
News Talks IVY.
Speaker 2 (09:00):
I think we all got what we were hoping for
on Saturday night at Mount Smart Stadium, a Warriors bounce
back display a vastly improved performance to beat the Broncos.
Although to be fair, that was a pretty low bar
after last weekend. This wasn't a must win game. Of course,
this season wouldn't have ended if they'd lost to the Broncos.
But it was a very important test for the Warriors
(09:22):
and their ability to react to what was a just
an utterly horrible outing against the Titans, to put things
right and use the embarrassment of last weekend as fuel
this time around. And I thought they did that really well.
I love the way they started, not for the first time.
They were hot from the start, sixteen mill ahead after
half an hour. There was a little bit of doubt
creeping in, I have to say in the second half
(09:44):
when things got tight. The Broncos got back to twenty
two sixteen, but the Warriors closed it out, got the
points and put those ghosts of the Gold Coast well
and truly to bed. And who knows, maybe that nightmare
over there might end up being a good thing, because
if there's ever a sense of complacency over the rest
of the season, you just have to play a replay
(10:05):
of that, the low lights perhaps of it to the
team as demonstration of what can happen if you don't
turn up against anyone in the NRL on any given day.
And actually have we now inadvertently perhaps uncovered the first
choice halves combination for the Warriors Chanelle Harris Tavita and
Timarti Martin combined brilliantly again on Saturday. That's the third
(10:27):
time they've worn six and seven, and the Warriors have
won all three of those games. Of course, Andrew Webster's
hand was forced on this one. Sewn Johnson out injured.
But he will have a decision to make, won't he,
Andrew Webster? When Shawn Johnson is fit again, he kind
of has to stick with what's working, doesn't he. They
say you should never change a winning team, that you
(10:47):
have the jersey until you don't deserve to have it anymore,
or any cliche you like, Or is Sean Johnson in
the terminology I like to use in these sorts of
things above the selection line? Is he one of those
players who, when he's one hundred percent fit and available,
plays no matter what, you just put him back in there.
(11:08):
I think twenty twenty three Seawn Johnson definitely sat above
the selection line, and there's no reason to think that
he can't become twenty twenty three Seawn Johnson in twenty
twenty four when he's undred percent fit because the injuries
have clearly affected him. But if he shakes those he
is absolutely one of the best going around. Look, I know,
Chanelle Harris, Tavita and Timardi Martin present a very compelling
(11:31):
case and I'm rarely looking forward to seeing how they
go in the next two or three games. But I'm
equally curious to find out what happens when Sewn Johnson
is one hundred percent fit.
Speaker 1 (11:42):
The Chamber is now in session on Sportsfix.
Speaker 2 (11:48):
On the Sports Fix podcast, It's time to enter the Chamber.
Joined in the Chamber today by news Talks hereb sports journalist, reporter,
host of the Big League podcast, and various other names
that we don't have time to go into now. Nathan
lom of course, how are you.
Speaker 3 (12:01):
Making I'm very well piety great to be on with you.
Speaker 2 (12:04):
Well, let's start with rugby Lee, because we all hoped
for a bounce back performance from the Warriors on the weekend.
Speaker 3 (12:09):
We got it.
Speaker 2 (12:10):
I think, did you did you get what you expected
from the Warriors against the Broncos at Mount Smart on Saturday?
Speaker 8 (12:16):
Well, what we got was a response and the biggest
way in which that showed was on defence. You don't
leak sixty six points and then not have a bounce
back you'd hope from a team that we thought was
going to be challenging for the top four.
Speaker 3 (12:28):
It doesn't look like that at this stage.
Speaker 8 (12:30):
But it just shows the attitude, the turnaround in attitude
because all those players, it's not like they were all
suddenly bad players one week in great players the next week.
Speaker 3 (12:38):
It was a team attitude thing.
Speaker 8 (12:40):
And that was the really, really worrying thing about the
Titans games. They just didn't show up with the right attitude.
They turned that around this week and to Mardy Martin
and Chanelle Harris Tavita again were the talk of the town.
I suppose to stand out performers. And you've got to
think now with Tomight and Martin having slotted in a
half back for an absent Shawn Johnson for three games,
they've now got three wins and their attack just looks
(13:01):
so much more fluid and cohesive.
Speaker 3 (13:04):
That can't be ignored.
Speaker 8 (13:05):
And I think that is down to the fact that
Johnson just hasn't trained this year because he've been managing
these injuries. So when the Warriors are actually at training
during the week, it's Martin who's at half back, and
then Johnson's been signing in a game day. But when
Johnson's not in the picture. They obviously are forced to
go with Martin and Chanelle. And they look really really good,
don't they look?
Speaker 3 (13:23):
They do?
Speaker 2 (13:24):
They look every inch a combination that could carry the
Warriors through this season and beyond. But answer me this,
When Shawn Johnson is back and he is fit, let's
let's put a hypothetical lens on this, a one hundred
percent fit Sean Johnson. What does Andrew Webster do around selection?
Speaker 3 (13:41):
Then?
Speaker 8 (13:42):
See, I've been a big proponent of pursuing with Sean
Johnson and Timid and Martin, but the reality is that
now with Sean Johnson for probably at least another four weeks,
with this Achilles injury and their position on the table,
they do not have the time to just give them
a bit of leash to take some time to work
out their combination. It just hasn't worked so far, and
(14:02):
they're running out of games to make it work. So
over the next four weeks, say they win two or
three games, you kind of can't change a winning combination
at this point in the season because they'll be If
they start dropping games again, they're at risk of not
missing the eight. And I really feel for Sean Johnson
because he hasn't been at one hundred percent this year,
and after that Titans game he copped so much crap
(14:23):
and I didn't understand it, because when you concede sixty
six points and then complain about Sean Johnson's kicking, it's
a bit like returning home to find your houses on
fire and then saying, oh, shoot, I forgot to put
the bins out, like there's a bigger issue at hand here.
And I feel for Sean Johnson. He's one of the
best players the club's ever had. But I think at
this point in the season, with Johnson going to be
absent for another few weeks, they have to stick with
(14:43):
Tomighty and Chanel.
Speaker 2 (14:44):
Yeah, And I get the feeling that's exactly what we'll
see over the next few weeks, certainly this coming weekend
against the Bulldogs, or like speaking of this coming weekend,
first chance for us to see the All Blacks under
Razor Scott Robertson's first test in charge of the All
Blacks against England under the roof in Dunedin. What will
have to happen in Dunedin on Saturday for I guess
(15:05):
you to be you to feel confident about this new regime.
Speaker 8 (15:08):
I honestly have no idea what to expect because this
is such a different team and without Mwanga, who's so
I guess, pivotal in steering this team around. Obviously, there
has been new personnel changes. We've got a new captain,
We've got you know, so many new I guess combinations.
I just kind of want to see fluidity. I just
want to see that they are a team. They've got
a clear game plan and they can straint together. I'm
expecting mistakes. I'm expecting it to be messy. I expect
(15:32):
the All Blacks to win, but I don't think it's
going to be terribly convincing. I'd love to see Damian
McKenzie in that first five jersey, and I guess what
he brings that's different to Mwanga, because although Manger was
so you know, dominant as a first five, it's not
like Damien McKenzie. He gets a bit of crap, I
guess for his size, and maybe it is not defensively
as resilient, but I don't think he's that much smaller
(15:54):
than Muhanga, so I think that could be interesting. I'm
also really interested to see how Boden Barrett goes if
he does get a run at fullback after having not
actually played any top tier rugby since May. So it's
a very interesting scenario for Razer in terms of how
he goes about selecting this. But I think the real
strength is in the forward pack. Having Ardie Savia back,
I assume he'll go to number eight given the absence
(16:15):
of hoskinstitute. Does he throw Wallace Atiti in there for game?
But there's so many different factors at play here. Piney,
all right, I'm going to ask you about two positions.
Who wears the number six and who wears the number
nine jersey? For you, Sami Penny fin Now gets the
nod at number six, but I have Luke Jacobson on
the bench. If I'm going loose forwards, I go Sama
Penny fee Now at six, Artie Savi at eight, Dalton
(16:36):
Papaletti at seven, and then Luke Jacobson can cover all
three on the bench.
Speaker 3 (16:40):
In the number nine jersey.
Speaker 8 (16:41):
I'll give to t J Peinada just because of how
well he performed his experience that I think is going
to be really important against an England side who are
in pretty good form given so many I guess new
or unfamiliar combinations around TJ. I think TJ is going
to be really pivotal. And then having form Lake Christie
come off the bench.
Speaker 2 (16:59):
All right, Just to finish our discussion today, about fifteen
hours before the England rugby team play the All Lags,
the England football team back in action in the quarterfinals
Againland at the Euros they have been anything but convincing
and but for a dude Bollingham specky in the ninety
fifth minute this morning against Lavakia, They've got them level
and they went on to win the game against against
(17:20):
LAVARKI a two one an extra time, they'd be going home.
They'd be on the way home. The Euros wouldn't be
coming home, just the England team would be coming home.
Speaker 3 (17:28):
Can they rise from this?
Speaker 2 (17:31):
This this treacle of a tournament I'm going to call it,
because that's what looks like they've been running in for
the last three or four games.
Speaker 3 (17:37):
Can they rise from this mediocrity and win this thing
or not?
Speaker 8 (17:40):
Yes? Yes, Piiney, I'll level with you right, I was
born in London and yes, one hundred percent, this team
can do it. They can turn it around. Look, they
haven't been in great form. But I believe in Gareth Southgate,
I believe in Jude Ballingan and his bicycle kicks and
I think we're going to see it again against Switzerland.
Speaker 3 (17:56):
England are going to go all the way. It's coming home.
Speaker 2 (17:57):
Pie fo good like a true almost UK resident than
absolutely great dav in the Chamber of Today thanks joining.
