Hello and welcome into a fresh episode of the Sports
Fix podcast Into July. We go Thursday, the fourth of July,
couple of days out from the first All Blacks test
of the year. I'm Jason Pine across the desk and
my name is Darcy Watergo good a piney dark. Great
to see you, and as we approach the first All
Blacks test of the year, always a bit of extra excitement.
We've got a team named today. Who have you got
(00:43):
to break it down for us today?
Speaker 4 (00:44):
Mullianina, a man who's spent way too much time at fullback,
having the time of his life over one hundred test caps.
Of course, he'll be commenting on some of the surprises
out of this team, one of them I think being
the fullback.
Speaker 3 (00:56):
So Malily joins us shortly fantastic. I think that's the
main talking point. You and I will kick it around
in the chamber, as well as the excellent performance this
morning from the Tall Blacks and other bits and pieces too.
Speaker 1 (01:06):
Let's get into it in other news.
Speaker 3 (01:12):
Alright, let's start on the sports Fix podcast is always
looking at some of the big sports stories of last
twelve hours or so. The Tall Blacks chances of going
to the Paris Olympic Games still alive.
Speaker 4 (01:20):
They've come from behind to.
Speaker 3 (01:21):
Big Croatian ninety eighty six in the first game at
their qualifying tournaments.
Speaker 4 (01:25):
It was right there for the lay of Princelyn from
a long way out. That's how Crediss and the Tall Blacks.
Speaker 2 (01:32):
Have done it.
Speaker 3 (01:34):
An unbelievable effort. To the Tour de France, and on
the fifth stage history for Mark Cavendish, not Cavendish.
Speaker 4 (01:41):
Tied to the right outside all big crash, Not Cavendish.
Speaker 3 (01:44):
All the way to the line as me so hord Lake,
stage thirty five, the town of France, incredible thirty fifth stage.
When on the Twitter France for Mark Cavendish on what
is likely to be his final appearance at the iconic
event and to court sixteen at Wimbledon, said that is
the sound of Lulu Soon beating Julia star Doom's Dava
(02:09):
in three sets, taking the decider six to two to advance
to the third round of the women's singles.
Speaker 2 (02:15):
Beating of X, We've got just the ticket. It's Sports
vix By News Talks IVY.
Speaker 4 (02:21):
Join now on the fixed by former All Black commentator
and man of the I. When it comes to the breakdown,
here is Mells Milliana Plenty Honors plate. How stuff does
that plate? Now?
Speaker 2 (02:33):
Bro?
Speaker 5 (02:34):
Oh man, let's see you what it's a pretty excited
plate now that the teams have finally been named. Well,
when I say finally, the All Blacks given Thursday and
the English come out on Tuesday. But it's so much
intrigued about this, this whole first up game. Obviously Razor
and his and his sort of coaching staff, what sort
of they're going to bring to the table in terms of,
(02:56):
I suppose your game plan and how they're going to
play the game. But also the English have brought down
a very good team and some some youth in there
as well, and perhaps a lot of us don't know
much about too, so looking forward to this one does.
Speaker 4 (03:07):
Let's don't go off the team first, and I suppose
the biggest point of interest is the position that you
made your own all those years ago, sorry just recently,
all those years ago, not calling it old merlsman. There
you go, hey, fallback Stephen Pelfeta has been given the nod.
He's starting at fallback. How big is this? Did you
(03:28):
see this one coming?
Speaker 5 (03:29):
No? Not not really, I mean, but when you actually
look at it and you dissect without even really listening
to sort of the reasons why you tend to forget
because everyone goes, I want to thought they might have
put you know, Damien back there voting at ten or
vice versa the other way around. But when you actually
look at Steven Pedalfetter's game management and what he actually
(03:50):
done and does in a positional plays, he's very sound
up in the air, he's he's he's confident in the
he directs his wingers really well, and he's actually deceptively
pretty quick. So in some ways perhips everyone. You know,
all the talkers around Damien and Boden, but you've actually
got someone like a fitter. He's been, he's played a test,
(04:11):
he's he's sort of under under all those aspects that
I've sort of spoken about. And now it gets a
really good opportunity to go out there. And I think
a lot of that too, will have will be the
fact that England are going to kick a hick of
a lot and his position will play for me his outstanding.
Speaker 4 (04:26):
He's really benefited, has any which is sad from the
injury of his Art Sullivan because he's spent so much
time at Fallback for that championship lose team.
Speaker 5 (04:34):
Yeah yeah, I mean he's had his injuries himself. He
was out for a very long time and they probably
you know, I would have thought at the beginning of
the year they would have had him ass down as
as the attended director been out for for a while
and to get him back into play whilst Harry Plummel
is going so well, it's an easy sort of transition,
you know, slot him in at fall Back. You know
(04:55):
he's sort of which he's he's a confident sort of
a play can play teen him and fall Back comprehensively.
But you've seen in the last sort of as he's
sort of come back he's slowly just starting to get
some really equality form again his positional play. I think
what you don't need to see when he you know,
when you're at when you're watching it on TV, is
(05:15):
the stuff off the ball. And as I said, positionally
he anticipates the ball really well in terms of when
they're exitting out of the their own twenty two, and
I think that's going to be a biggie. I think
being able to catch the ball on the four particularly
is a team that you know, you are expected to
kick a lot and then to counter attack off that,
which is very he is very good at alongside his
other two wingers. I think that could be a really positive, well,
(05:39):
it is a positive sort of selection.
Speaker 4 (05:40):
Let's take a look at Semi Penafina and the position
he holds. They look at it was going to be
not a coin toss, but the decision was going to
go one way or to other with a couple of
players in that POSEI why did Summerpenie get the nod?
Do you think?
Speaker 5 (05:57):
I think, if if you look at it, it's perhaps
the height. You know, some penny give gives us another
line out option in terms of his height. We know
how good he is on you know when you when
you players on defense, but staying in that system is
going to be a big one. So I think it's
possibly that ball carries in close quarters, you know, off
(06:17):
the teen or you know after nine, he gets his
body position you know low, and he's quite tough at
getting getting that, particularly inside the twenty two. So I
think you know, when you've got two relatively big locks
and Barrett and also to be to he just gives
us a little bit of each, possibly a bit of
speed and something for the English to consider it line
out time, because that's going to be a big thing.
(06:39):
I mean, the English are going to come here. You know,
traditionally they've been very good at their lineout drives, the
seat piece, you know, they they've selected a very experienced,
you know team up front, particularly when it comes to
scrum time, so you know, getting that variation and then
just something for the English sort of think about and
sometimes when you're when it is your ball at lineout
(07:01):
and it might just give you that little bit of
an edge.
Speaker 4 (07:03):
DJ put in our old school making it back for
what will be his eighty first test. It's this is
a wonderful story of redemption.
Speaker 5 (07:11):
I think experience really, isn't it. So that's a lot
of test matches in it, and you're right, what a
wonderful story. I mean, you've got to also remember Roy
Gay got an opportunity off the back end of t J.
Petanada being being injured, you know, when he was at
the Hurricanes as well, and it's almost gone the other way,
in the way he's got his body back, particularly in
the later stages of his career, has been outstanding. But
(07:33):
you know, I think the experience, particularly in your first
test match as a coach, he probably wants to make
sure that's sort of short up in some ways. Not
that I'm saying that fin Let Christy doesn't provide that either,
but I think just that little bit of a bit
of an edge around there, and also probably to counter
what's on the other side. And in terms of you know,
(07:53):
you're Marcus Smiths and also Mitchell so and he's a competitor,
I think he's he's he'll go out there and you'll
try and niggle those guys.
Speaker 2 (08:01):
You know.
Speaker 5 (08:02):
Look that I mentioned Smith in particular to try and
get him off his game. So it's great to see TJ.
Speaker 3 (08:07):
Beck.
Speaker 5 (08:08):
That's it's awesome that we have got that bit of experience.
And I like this team, I really do. And I think,
you know, he's a couple of positions here that you
would have thought far out. You're not quite sure what
he's going to go through. The big one for me
is how are we going to play?
Speaker 2 (08:21):
This is Sportsfix, You're daily does of sports News Power
by news talks evy out of.
Speaker 4 (08:28):
Sight, out of mind, that is the White Ferns. They
have had a shocking time of it over in England,
soundly beaten up by the English women in the three
One Day Internationals leading into the five T twenty matches.
They have cast your mind back to the end of
summer when England came over here and torched us, just
(08:50):
like they did at home in England. So is there
a huge problem within the side or is it a
case of the rest of the world catching up and
indeed advancing further than the New Zealand women. The English,
by far and away one of the best women's cricket
teams in the world. No to be beaten by them
at home, however, shame to be beaten so comprehensively by
(09:14):
them at home after experiencing what the English bring to
the pitch, bring to the outfield when they tour it
over here at the end of last summer, when you
look ahead to what the White Fans have in front
of them. They have got a T twenty I Women's
World Cup coming up that starts in early October. They
have a couple of warm up matches before that. Unlike
(09:37):
their men's counterparts and they get to tune themselves with
an Australian series over there in T twenties before they
get underway. The T twenty competition itself, two groups of
five goes to a semi final situation and then of
course a final to determine the champion of the world.
Based on what we have seen, of course no T
(09:57):
twenties yet over in England, it doesn't look good for
this New Zealand side. However, it's not about the results
that this team get now or have had of recent time, James.
This team will be judged upon the results they get
at the T twenty World Cup. This is where this
entire team must focus on bringing a great result. So
(10:20):
the next question is how many players actually survive going
through to that T twenty squad. How many of the
older players, even though they bring so much experience to
the side, are maybe just a little too long in
the tooth and need to be shown the door, and
need to be shown the door with reasonable haste, Because
if it doesn't get done during this series and we
(10:42):
only start demoing this concept in the three game series
up against the Australians, you'd feel it'll be too little
too late.
Speaker 2 (10:51):
The chamber is now in session on Sportsfix.
Speaker 3 (10:56):
Let's hop into the chamber then and kick around the
sporting issues of the day. Really, the main one, as
we've already heard from Mills, Muleana Chadadas, is this all
blacks test side for the first test of Scott Robertson's
rain as head coach against England and Saturday night Stephen
Petterfeder was the main surprise. Dares anything else to catch
your eye.
Speaker 4 (11:13):
I think that Pettinada in half back initially, and I
think also where they went with number six, A lot
of people thought the blind side they might tend towards
Ethan Blackadder, who of course is a very abrupt, aggressive,
abrasive player who's all shoulders and elbows and knees and
everything else. And maybe Robertson might tend toward him because
(11:37):
he's a character he knows, but maybe not a lot
of rugby of recent time. So Simmer Pennie, I don't
think you're lacking much in that role. Has got the
nods there the three positions that I look to.
Speaker 3 (11:46):
Yeah, the interesting one for me was that Ethan Blackadder
is not starting but also not in the reserves. And
I guess that really speaks to Luke Jacobson's ability to
cover all three loose forward positions, doesn't it. Ethan Blackadder
can play what six and seven? I guess it's a
push he could play eight. I thought they might go
the one two punch you know, some a penny female
and Ethan Blackadder you know and almost you know, give
(12:07):
some a pena you know, an hour and then bringing
Ethan black added to bring extra energy. Do you think
they would have considered the one two punch in the
six jersey?
Speaker 4 (12:17):
Yeah? I think they would have considered absolutely everything. We
know what ras is like. If you've seen any of
his interviews or anything about him, he is one of
the most outrageously prepared coaches. Is nothing that he doesn't miss.
So that taken into account, he's fine tooth combed this
and some of Pennie has got that role. I think
we've got to look to with summer. PENNI fe now
(12:39):
is Marcus Smith is going to be a marked man.
He might have a target on his back and have
a target on his chest, and I think Sama Penie
will be going straight at that target. Let sob he
can keep it low and he can keep it clean,
because I think there is a market turn in the
game with the way that dynamic between those Lucies, particularly Samiteni,
(12:59):
and of course the standoff.
Speaker 3 (13:02):
There's thirty two in this squad. Twenty three have been
named for Saturday Night, and one thing which caught by
eye was that none of them, none of the five
All Blacks players who are new All Blacks, have been
included in the twenty three. Whether that's coincidental or not,
I'm not sure. Do you think that Race is just
quite keen to make sure that he has a bit
of experience out there for the very first test under
(13:24):
his control.
Speaker 4 (13:25):
He's got to hit the ground running with the flames
at his feet. We talked about it on talkback last
night and people will calling me, oh, you're not an
All Black fan talking like this, But I think it's fair.
Fourteen tests in a season. We know the grief that
Ian Foster got last season, the last few seasons, and
the aggression from the crowd from the public, So I
think this time around, Scott Robertson needs to start. He
(13:47):
needs to start well. He needs to win, otherwise that's
going to start bubbling under again. Whether it's deserved or not.
I don't know. So what he's done, he's gone, I'm
going to consistency. You look at the midfield selection, because
there's still arguments around whether Yuan is the best center.
But he's picked combinations and he's pet guys that he
believes understand what the pressure is on playing against the English.
(14:09):
That's why no Tossia, no Setiti, no Ratima and the like.
That's why they'll be waiting until maybe slightly lesser opposition.
But I think he's got to start with a bang,
doesn't he.
Speaker 3 (14:20):
Oh? Look absolutely, and I'm not surprised at all that
he's gone with known quantities in some pretty crucial positions
on the wings. This interested me Mark Delaya and Severa Reese,
not the fact that they were chosen, but the Mark
de layers on the left wing, Severa Reese is on
the right. I was just trying to remember back through
the Super RUGB season. I think both played on both
wings at various stages. I don't know enough to know this,
(14:41):
but wing positions pretty much interchangeable.
Speaker 4 (14:45):
Depends on how the player fends players off. In all honesty,
which way he's going to tend to when he's in
his defensive play and also the way in his attacking player.
It's the same Jill Amore, comfortable on the left or
right with your step and which way you actually fend
players off. The same with the way you tackle players too,
So there is a tendency, there is a favorite wing.
(15:07):
But I speak when you book at Robertson in the
way he worked with the Crusaders. There'll be very sound
set piece, very gutsy up the middle, and they will
use these Blitzkrig like attacks from deep in the back line.
And that means you'll have players who will hopefully be
able to use both sides of the park to really
run a sword through the English when they have that
(15:29):
breakaway opportunity.
Speaker 3 (15:30):
Yeah, high excitement in this team. I think it's a
good team. I think everybody agrees it's a good team.
And now we just wait to see how they go
on the grass under the roof in Dunedin on Saturday night.
To the other side of the world where the toll
Blacks are currently trying to qualify for the Paris Olympics.
It's a bit of a last chance qualifying tournament in Greece.
They did the job over Croatia this morning next up
(15:50):
one of the best players on the planet.
Speaker 4 (15:52):
Dos. This is going to be very, very difficult. It's
within twenty four hours from Croatia and they went on
to run at the end of that to actually win
that game. It is key in this qualifying tournament. Luka
Doncic's Slovenia team all wait, of course, this qualifying tournament
is being played in Greece, and there's a small case
of a man called Jonas into Compo playing for the
(16:15):
Greek This is hard, mate. They've got a finished groups
of two, groups of three. They've got to finish in
the top two crossovers, a semi final to a final.
Only one team qualifiers. So Pedro Cameron and his men,
they got a lot going on over in Greece.
Speaker 3 (16:27):
It's not a bad team though. I looked at the
Tall Blacks roster and your eyes are drawn to some
players who've played a lot of basketball, and I think
any New Zealand side with Corey Webster in it, for example,
is going to be a scoring thread. I just love
the guy, the way the guy plays basketball.
Speaker 2 (16:40):
Yeah.
Speaker 4 (16:40):
Look, Ruben Tarang, he's been around a long time. He
provides a light. You've got a months through up the
middle of the form of Verdanovitch Yanny Wetzel's got a
lot of game about him. Finder Laney, we know what
he contributes. Shay Ellie is there too. This is an
experienced team. And you remember when we played Greece a
couple of years back with into the compo in that side,
they only won by six, So they're not unbeatable if
(17:02):
you will. But so much on this to actually get
to the Olympic Games. It's from the All Blacks to
the two Blacks. Are pretty exciting, Jay.
Speaker 3 (17:10):
Yeah, absolutely right. Well, they can only do it one
game at a time. The Tall Blacks next up, as
Darcy mentioned, Slovenia overnight tonight, about two thirty tomorrow morning. Actually,
when they take on Slovenia and Luka Don Chicch and others.
I think that's us in the chamber. This Saturday night
rugby Test cannot come around quickly enough, dars.
Speaker 4 (17:27):
I gotta tell you there's.
Speaker 3 (17:28):
Only so much you can do in terms of previewing
a Test match. I'm quite looking forward to next week
when we can review it all and actually talk about
some nuts and bolts of how they played.
Speaker 4 (17:37):
And if you've got nothing to Do in the Leader
the wires start at five. What an afternoon, Jean telling me,
oh my lord, this is doo. Make it do, make it?
Speaker 3 (17:47):
How good?
Speaker 4 (17:48):
That is us in the taber.
