Speaker 5 (00:36):
Hello and welcome into the Sports Fix podcast Paris twenty
twenty four edition. I'm Jason Pine. Day three action all
done at Paris twenty twenty four. We'll wrap it all
for you over the next fifteen minutes or so. We're
also joined on the podcast today by Ollie White's coach
Darren Baisley, ahead of their third and final pull match
(00:57):
tomorrow against France.
Speaker 2 (00:58):
Let's get into it, leading Olympic Games Fix. We've got
just a ticket.
Speaker 4 (01:02):
It's Sports Fix Paris twenty twenty four edition, powered by
News TALKSIB.
Speaker 5 (01:09):
Let's start with the Black Ferns. They'll play for medals tomorrow.
They beat Fiji thirty eight to seven in their third
poll match and then came up against China in the quarterfinals.
Speaker 3 (01:18):
Skip past that on the right, hands out for Phoenix
hose and cut through one cut through two.
Speaker 2 (01:22):
Can't she go hers up? She gets up and goes again.
Speaker 3 (01:25):
And forces it down. It's a try some performance from
this New Zealand team. Nine tries.
Speaker 4 (01:31):
There's the full time whistle fifty five five.
Speaker 5 (01:35):
An absolute massacre by the Black Ferns of a China
side they'd already beaten in pool play. So New Zealand
will meet the United States. They beat Great Britain in
the quarter final on that side of the drawer. That
semi final is at one thirty tomorrow morning, New Zealand time,
and the medal matches later on. Surely, surely tomorrow's the
(01:57):
day when a medal arrives via the black Ferns, or
maybe via someone else.
Speaker 2 (02:01):
More on that.
Speaker 5 (02:02):
In a second in the pool, Erica Fairweather had her
second Olympic final in three days, this time the two
hundred meter freestyle final. Haw He ahead by two tenths
of a second. Titmass second, O'Callahan third, Erica Fairweather in
seventh position. O'Callahan, the Australian is the leader from Titmus,
(02:22):
and how he is there a boil over coming in.
Speaker 3 (02:25):
A yellow camp.
Speaker 5 (02:26):
Everybody thought they'd be chasing Gutti on Titmas. Instead it's
Molly O'Callahan who leads it's going to be an Australian
one two. But it's Molly o'kellahan who wins Titmass second
haw he in third, Eric of fair Weather coming home
in seventh position. Sports figs Paris twenty twenty four edition,
(02:47):
Let's Go to the Mountain Biking. Sam Gaze lined up
in the men's race, but things didn't go his way.
Sam Gaze cuts a floor figure riding down towards the ends.
He's a minute and forty one behind the viced up
Gays is in sixth and Riley Amos the America and seventh,
So a sixth place finished for Sam Gaze. Here he
is afterwards one.
Speaker 2 (03:07):
Day be happy about it up.
Speaker 6 (03:09):
SAT's no what I came out for, and to be honest,
I'm quite heartbroken. But I did absolutely everything I could,
and at one point I believed the middle was still
a reach. After a horrible start, I was chebl it's
my goodenough start, and then when I followed trying to
follow it back to Allen Hafley, I knew that was
so I didn't have it then, So that was a
moment that was lost in there. From there I was
just the absolute best I could.
Speaker 5 (03:27):
So disappointment for Sam Gaze in the men's mountain biking.
Speaker 2 (03:31):
Reaction and Analysis.
Speaker 4 (03:33):
It's foots Fix Paras, twenty twenty four editions with Jason Vine.
Speaker 5 (03:37):
An absolutely terrific day for Kiwi skiff sailors William McKenzie
and Isaac McCarty off the coast of Marseilles where the
sailing is taking place. In the three races today, they
were eighth, first, and first. That means they lead the
twenty boat field after six of twelve fleet races by
five points. Looking really good William McKenzie and Isaac McCarty.
(04:01):
Joe la and Molly Meach though a ninth, seventeenth and
an eighth. They sit nineteenth in the women's skiff. In
the wind surfing, Josh Armott has finished fourth in the
only men's race to get under way today. Villa ten
Have has come home twenty third and fifteenth in the
first two women's races. She sits twenty first overall.
Speaker 2 (04:21):
Don't miss a moment from the Olympic Games.
Speaker 4 (04:24):
It's Sportsfix Paris is twenty twenty four editions with Jason Pine.
Speaker 5 (04:31):
On the sports Fix podcast Paris, twenty twenty four edition,
Let's Get You Inside the Ollie Whites football camp. They
play their third and final pull match at the Olympics
five o'clock Wednesday morning, New Zealand time. They're up against
the host France and Marseille, almost certainly needing to win
to reach the quarterfinals. Coach Darren Baisley is with US Base.
Given a couple of days to think about it, how
(04:52):
do you reflect back on the four to one loss
to the United States in Game two?
Speaker 7 (04:57):
Yeah, I mean, obviously it's disappointing. You know, we were
on a real high, you know, after that first game
against Guinea and you know, they played really well, scored goals,
created chances and you've got our three points on the board,
and we went into the America game, you know, understanding
that they were a good team and knowing some of
their strengths and their players, and we just, yeah, we started,
(05:20):
you know, we didn't start well and obviously conceded those
early goals and I think it really knocked us and
sort of knocked us off of our normal game, and
we weren't quite ourselves in that first half. But you know,
the boys have really picked themselves up and you know,
we've had a good few meetings and you know, they've
asked us to be pretty accountable with everything in the game.
Speaker 8 (05:39):
So that's great, you know, and they've.
Speaker 7 (05:41):
Today, they've they've found their voices again and we're in
good spirits so looking looking forward to this next game.
Speaker 5 (05:47):
So what sort of things have you done to quickly
refocus the players for the French game, because you know
it's not that far away. Is that you don't have
a hic of a lot of time.
Speaker 8 (05:56):
You don't.
Speaker 7 (05:57):
I mean, the main focus was recovery fitness wise and
making sure that everybody is you know, fully fully fit,
ready to play again. But you know, obviously after a
defeat like that, it was you know, it was down
for the players. You know, there's obviously they know that
they had an opportunity to continue in that tournament after
that first win and it didn't go to plan, you know,
(06:19):
but you know, that is football.
Speaker 8 (06:20):
It doesn't always go your way.
Speaker 7 (06:22):
And you know, some of the conversations we've had around
it's you know, it's international football. It is tough and
we need to get used to playing in those tough games.
And you know that's what that's what it's going to be. So, yeah,
we looked through the video and we talked around a
lot of the the performance in and out of possession
and definitely a lot of things to tidy up. And yeah,
the players did a lot of talking and you know,
(06:44):
we came to a lot of agreements on things that
we can do better. So you know, hopefully we've now
moved forward. You know, we won't we won't forget what
happened in that game. It's something that we you know,
we can carry with us to help us learn, but
definitely need to move forward and move on.
Speaker 5 (06:59):
Yeah, to another big game France the host. What is
what's your best strategy for getting a result against France?
Speaker 7 (07:09):
Well, you know what the best thing we can do
is be ourselves and play together as a team, and
you know, we have to be at our best. So
you know, we've done a lot of talking here around
the Olympics and you know the historic moments of the
Olympics and what an event it is, and people that
win medals here at Olympics, they perform PBS you know,
whatever field they're in, you know, and that's the challenge
(07:31):
for our guys, you know, if we if we want
to beat France tomorrow when we need some PBS, you know,
in whichever position people are playing, and that's the Olympics,
that's the challenge in front of us. We're definitely capable,
but we have to have players that do do perform
PBS on the day.
Speaker 5 (07:46):
Yeah, that's a great way of looking at it. You've
kept the same starting a living for both game space.
Speaker 2 (07:50):
Are you likely to do that again?
Speaker 7 (07:53):
Well, I can't say too much, but now likely likely
to be a couple of changes. You know, it is
a tournament and there's you know, you don't get too
much turnaround, too much sort of space in between these games.
So yeah, likely to be a couple of changes which
will sort of get out there tomorrow. But yeah, whichever
whichever team we put out, the players are ready and
(08:15):
you know, they just want they want to go out
and they want to correct a few things from the
last game. And you know, they much preferred the feeling
after the Guinea game.
Speaker 8 (08:21):
To the US game.
Speaker 5 (08:23):
And we know the French love their sport and in
particular they love their football. What sort of atmosphere are
you expecting for this one?
Speaker 7 (08:32):
I mean, it's a magnificent stadium here in Marseille. From
what we've been told, it's it's going to be not
a sellout, but like a large attendance, So I think
it's going to be a great atmosphere, probably.
Speaker 8 (08:45):
Pretty hostile, so that's fine.
Speaker 7 (08:47):
And like I say, I think, I think footballer is
like playing in these big games, and most footballers get
up for big crowds. So I think it will help us,
you know, it will help us with this is a
really big occasion. You know, not all of our players
you know, are used to playing in these type of games,
so you know there is that element. But I actually
think it will help us be in a really big
(09:08):
game with a big crowd, you know, against some pretty
well known players.
Speaker 8 (09:12):
You know, I think we can get up for that.
Speaker 5 (09:14):
And you and I have talked a lot about how
how infrequently you get the chance to spend time with
your players as a national coach and in this case
as an under twenty three coach.
Speaker 2 (09:23):
How valuable has.
Speaker 5 (09:24):
That time been for you and the players to spend
time together, But also I guess for the players themselves
with a couple of new faces getting to know one another.
Speaker 7 (09:32):
Yeah, I mean, it's it's great every time we get
squads together. You know, you're bringing Kiwi lads together that
you haven't maybe seen each other for a while, and
they just connect so quickly. You know, the cohesion in
the squad's great, and you see them interacting with each
other on and off the pitches.
Speaker 8 (09:47):
It's just great to see. You know, we've we're lucky.
Speaker 7 (09:50):
We've had got a lot of players that've been with
us through the Nation's Cup, you know, and now with
us again. So you know, we've we've we've done a
lot of work off the pitch. Obviously, we've trained and
trained pretty hard, but yeah, we've had a lot of
a lot of discussions around culture and how we can
connect back to New zealand connect to each other and hopefully,
you know, that comes out on the pitch like it
(10:11):
did against Guinea.
Speaker 8 (10:12):
You know, that.
Speaker 7 (10:13):
Guinea performance was very strong. The boys looked like they
really fought for each other and sort of we're there
backing each other up, and you know, it was a
great occasion. We feel like we sort of tinged it
a little bit with the US performance, but that is football,
and it is tournament football, and the good thing is
we get to go again, so we get to play
(10:35):
another big game. And now it's knockout football. Really we
need to win.
Speaker 2 (10:39):
Thanks Darren.
Speaker 5 (10:39):
Let's Darren Baseley, coach of the Ollie Whites, third and
final pull match against France, five o'clock Wednesday morning, New Zealand.
Time knitting to win to make it through to the quarterfinals.
Speaker 2 (10:50):
There's a moment from the Olympic Games.
Speaker 4 (10:52):
It's Sports figs Paris, twenty twenty four edition.
Speaker 5 (10:55):
Back to the overnight action. The women's doubles combination of
Aaron Ratliff and Lulu Sun lost in straight sets the
third seed of Italians Sira Irani and Jasmin Paulini in
their first round match. A bit of a trick though
the match was moved on center court at Roland Gaross,
where it was originally scheduled on one of the outside
courts on center court.
Speaker 8 (11:15):
Earlier in the day.
Speaker 5 (11:16):
Raffinadal and Novak Djokovic met for the sixtieth time.
Speaker 3 (11:20):
Serving at forty thirty to try and wrap up this
match on center courts and he does. It's with the
nace down into the corner. Just too good in the end.
But it's Novak Djokovic with his thirty first win out
of sixty games against Ruffhamadalt.
Speaker 5 (11:37):
Tim Price finishing sixth and Clark Johnston eighteenth. In the
individual three day equestrian event, German Michael Jung won the
gold medal. New Zealand finished eighth in the team's event.
Shooter Owen Robinson hit seventy one of seventy five targets
in the men's trap. He's nineteenth with fifty more targets
to go. Only the top six will progress to the
(11:59):
medal round. And rowers Alana Sherman and Kate Haynes have
been eliminated from their competition, finishing last in their women's
pair rowing. Repercharge SPORTSFX Paris twenty twenty four edition. Let's
look ahead to Kiwi's in action on day four when surely,
surely the first medal or medals plural will arrive. Hayden
(12:22):
