This is Sportsfix Howard by News Talks ed B.

Speaker 2 (00:21):
Hello and welcome into a fresh episode of the Sports
Fix podcast, the last one of the week.

Speaker 3 (00:25):
It's Friday, the twenty third of August. My name's Jason
Pine alongside my man.

Speaker 4 (00:29):
I'm see Walder Grave and this is the last of
the week. The plenty of sporting action up over the
weeke with all sports breakfasts and of course Pony on
weekend sport. You can't escape that easy, Poney, No, I.

Speaker 2 (00:40):
Wouldn't want to, though, I'm quite happy being being trapped
if it's the.

Speaker 3 (00:45):
Right word inside the radio to talk some sport.

Speaker 2 (00:48):
I've got some thoughts on the Leon McDonald thing. After
giving it the overnight test, we'll look at some of
the big sports stories of the day. What are you
coming up as far as an interviewers concerned?

Speaker 4 (00:55):
Us caring on taking a look at the interesting decision
of Leon McDonald to walk away from the All Blacks.
Chris Lendrom is going to join us to put more
context around yesterday's call.

Speaker 3 (01:06):
Sounds awesome let's get into it.

Speaker 1 (01:08):
In other news, let's begin.

Speaker 2 (01:12):
It is always checking out some of the biggest sports
stories floating around. To eighteen, New Zealand have claimed to
first up victory in the America's Cup Final preliminary regatta
in Barcelona after Luna Rossa were forced to retire.

Speaker 3 (01:23):
Oh no cost, will that be all black?

Speaker 2 (01:32):
Icon Sir John Kerwin is praising Scott Robertson and Leon
McDonald's but coming to a quick decision to part ways.

Speaker 5 (01:39):
Incredible courage. I believe on behalf of both of them
if it's not working out, because the status quo would
be probably stay there finished the season. But you know,
for them to move on this quicker, I think it's
the best thing for the team and.

Speaker 2 (01:53):
New Keywed coach Dacy Jones looking forward to selecting his
first squad with dates for the Pacific Nations Cup now confirmed.

Speaker 4 (02:00):
And we've got players in this team. Captain James for
she Harris well, he knows is how to win. Players
in the Melvin Storm system, you know, all they know
is how to win. So I've got a strong group
of leaders there leading a vex.

Speaker 1 (02:13):
We've got just the ticket. It's Sports Vex powered by
Newstalks IVY.

Speaker 4 (02:19):
We're joined now by Chris Alendra and the general manager
of Professional Rugby and Performance from in Z. Chris, Welcome
to the show. Geez, he's been a busy twenty four
hours or so for you, isn't it.

Speaker 6 (02:32):
Sure, Darcy? Yeah, never a dull day in rugby mate.

Speaker 4 (02:35):
If you know, yeah, well I would say that's dull.
I would say surprising more than anything else. There's a
lot of people scratching the head going we don't quite
know where this has come from. It's been bubbling under
for a while. Just on that there's nothing more to come.
You guys aren't suppressing anything, are you. This is purely
what you say, It.

Speaker 6 (02:53):
Is absolutely yep. No, we've been very transparent about what's
happened with Razor and Leon and nothing else to come.

Speaker 4 (03:08):
I thought to myself when I read the press relief,
it was a red flag to me that there was
no quote from Leon McDonald. There was nothing attribute to
him about normally say look, you know, I've enjoyed my time.
I wish you the beast for South Africa. He was
very noticeable in his absence on that release. Can you
tell us why that was the case.

Speaker 6 (03:27):
Chris Leon's taking a break. He yeah, just wasn't considered
that something that was necessary at time yesterday. Again, there's
nothing hidden going on here, Darcy, but I do understand
that yesterday's news would have come as a big surprise

(03:50):
to a lot of people. You know, to make a
change in the All Blacks coaching group part way through
a test season is never plan a But what you
have here is two coaches who just hear of genuine
differences in approach to coaching, different philosophies around the way

(04:15):
the game is played now. And I guess under the
intensity of test preparation over the first few weeks of
the season that had become clear to both of them
that it just wasn't clicking. And as I said yesterday
with media, I'm really proud of them both that they've

(04:37):
made a brave and decisive call to part ways now
best interest of the team at heart.

Speaker 4 (04:44):
And it's always been in a case if it did
break down to this degree, Razor wasn't going anywhere because
he's the coach. There was never an argument around that space,
was there. He there I suppose ceded to what Leon
was after or sorry, Leon, you've got to go is
that the base of it.

Speaker 6 (05:04):
Well, that's never really a question. I mean, I think
that the first thing to say. Overall, we're really content
with the direction of a team under Raiser. I know,
you know, they had by their own standards, players and
coaches and management. They were frustrated by their performance in
Wellington a couple of weeks ago against Argentina. But in

(05:30):
all other regards, I think the team's trending really positively.
All of us across the country, all All Blacks fans have
recognized us as as a new coaching group. There's new
players in the group, there's new player leadership. There's just
a lot of newness around the environment and it takes
a little while for everybody to bed in. I think

(05:52):
we saw some huge positives in the English series, and
you know, it's not a performance related issue at all
that we're talking about. It's just two coaches that didn't
quite click.

Speaker 4 (06:07):
And finally, Benjamin, thanks so much for joining us. How
long did it take you to negotiate the payout and
the severance of the contracts. I'm presuming it was a
long time. There would have been a bit of head
butting around that, surely, so.

Speaker 6 (06:21):
You've been in this game long enough to know that
I can't answer questions about employment as she is my friend.
But look, you know you just like you say, you
look after your people as they're entitled to be looked after.
And you know that's really all we can say.

Speaker 4 (06:44):
Yeah, I knew, absolutely, but you know the deal, Chris.
Good things come to those who ask. They always have
a crack, don't you. Hey, Chris, thanks so much for
joining us here. Real pleasure to talk to you. Let's
hope now it's eyes forward, reversion mirrors are broken off
and we can concentrate on what will be a tremendous
tour of the republic. Again, thanks for your time and
your availability. Hugely appreciated.

Speaker 6 (07:08):
Be quite good to talk mate.

Speaker 1 (07:12):
This is Sportsfix, your daily does of sports news, how
and by News Talks evy.

Speaker 2 (07:19):
Having given this the overnight test and thought about it
more and more over the last twenty four hours or so,
I really rate the quick decision that was made yesterday
by Scott Robertson and Leon McDonald to part ways. If
something's not clicking, if something's not working with no sign
the gap between the two can be bridged, then why
pretend it is just better for all concerns to move

(07:40):
on in separate directions. I think this is a really
courageous decision by both men, especially, I have to say,
by Leon McDonald. He could easily have towed the line,
gone against his beliefs and carried on in a job
that he was unhappy, and instead he trusted his instincts
and stuck to his convictions. And that means he's not

(08:01):
part of the all Blacks coaching set up anymore. This
seemingly dream job that turned out to not be what
he or expected. Probably he would have gone into this,
they both would have, he and Raser with the best
of intentions. But sometimes, and we all know this, sometimes
things just don't work out. Not everything that you try

(08:22):
on is going to fit. Many of us have gone
into seemingly dream jobs and it just hasn't been greener
the grass over there. One of my favorite sayings is
fail quickly, and that is probably the wrong phrase to
be used in this situation, because there's no failure here.
What about this find out quickly? Leon McDonald has found

(08:45):
out quickly it's not for him. We move on.

Speaker 1 (08:49):
The Chamber is now in session on Sportsfax.

Speaker 3 (08:54):
For the final time this week.

Speaker 2 (08:55):
Can we pop into the chamber, the lounge, the Barlin,
or it's got so many names now that we really
don't know where we are apart from the fact we're
here to talk some sporting issues. Liam Lawson, I heard
some news this morning, Dars, and I know this what
a pretoria is up. Mormant Marco, who seems to have
quite a bit of influence around red ball, says next
year Liam Lawson will have a full time drive.

Speaker 4 (09:15):
Do we believe this to be perfectly honest? This story,
this yarn has been going in loops for a long
long time now. The management of Liam Lawson are staying
stim because I think if they do make any more mentions,
which they have done previously, they might get themselves into
hot water. More importantly, they might get lim into hot water.
So he's got to tread very carefully. But that the

(09:36):
contract that he has suggests that in September, if they
haven't given him a full time drive, he can just
exit his contract and go and look for another drive.
As far as Helmut Marco is concerned, he's constantly in
German newspapers saying things that don't necessarily come to any fruition.
But I think as we get closer to September only
a week away now will start learning more about the

(09:59):
potential for Lim to get that seat. We're all keen
and interesting this weekend pony. It is zan Vort and
of course that's where Liam Lawson replaced that Danie Riccardo
a last season. It was a terrible, terrible day and
absolutely hosed it down at Blue like you wouldn't believe.
And he got into that Red Bull car and he
drove it like a superhero and that's what started it

(10:19):
all off. So celebrating that year and of course Max
fresh Stappan are looking to maybe try and do something
because his leads and the lead of the team at
slowly getting whittle away. It's going to be a fantastic
race mate. If you watch one race this year, watch
that one. It's a roal snorter, it really is.

Speaker 2 (10:35):
Can you put us in the picture here though, dus
If he was to go into a seat, someone's got
to vacate.

Speaker 3 (10:40):
So are we looking.

Speaker 2 (10:40):
At Sugio Perez and the top Red Bull team? Are
we looking at Ricardo and the Red Bull sister team?
Where where is Liam Lawson most likely to land?

Speaker 4 (10:51):
You'd say the junior team which is what they're calling
the less of a team, the v Carb side. That
would fit perfectly. Sonoda's going in a couple of years,
so he may well go with the Honda sponsorship that
he brings disappeared to beep Audi for example, So there's
a chance they put Lim up with the stapp and
but they've got the case of Ricardo and he brings eyeballs.

(11:14):
They love him because people climb into him, so they're
very interested saying interesting on that on social media. Lim
Lawson's actually prevalent. He does a really good job. He
pulls a lot of people along with them. So there's
a lot of jugglings, a lot of contracts floating around.
We simply don't know Sonoda might be in trouble. Perry's
I check. I don't know how long he's lasted and

(11:34):
why he has lasted that long. He's been pants but
somewhere in that mess I can't be accurate because everybody's
having a go. Everybody's having a guess dice being rolled
all over the shop with that one there, so look
fingers cost We know he's fast, we know that helmet.
Marco likes him. But of course on that helmet Marco
and Christian Horner are always having an argue about who's

(11:54):
actually running the show. So until I find out, we
don't know either, right, all right?

Speaker 2 (11:59):
That's good, good intel, good good summary darts. I feel
like much more on the picture now. I want to
talk to you about football, mate.

Speaker 4 (12:05):
It's the same deal I just looked at you. Go
football mate, that's your past and.

Speaker 2 (12:08):
Knock it out, all right, another of your passions. But
I want to chime in a bit here too, as
rugby league Warriors Bulldogs tonight at eight o'clock at Sean
Johnson Stadium in Auckland, the final time SJ will run
out in the Warriors colors at Shawn Johnson Stadium, Mount Smart.

Speaker 3 (12:25):
Of course, are we.

Speaker 2 (12:28):
As a fairy tale here? The Bulldogs have got quite
a bit to play for, haven't they. But I think
we'd probably all like to see him go out on
somewhat of a high, wouldn't we on home on home turf?

Speaker 4 (12:37):
Fairy tale? Something out of the Grimm brothers.

Speaker 5 (12:39):
Mate.

Speaker 4 (12:40):
The idea is they go out looking toward top eight
position and that's not going to happen. Dogs of course,
that they've got a chance to maybe bust their way
into the force, so they came to bring absolutely everything.
I think they should have called the Seawan Johnson Experience
as opposed to the Shawn Johnson Stadium's an album. Well
that's it. It's all about Shawn Johnson. It really is

(13:00):
like Jas s Tavanger will play second fiddle the as
we'll adden Vanua Blake. But interesting, isn't it what his
his career been punctuated with. But he used the word
mercurial and sometimes misused because mercurial, like mercury, it goes up,
it goes down, it goes up, let's go down. So
it kind of summarizes what's happened to Sean right the
way through his career. He's gone up, He's touched the stars,

(13:23):
and then he's hit the deck been swept away. So
who knows what happens. But the fans at the Sean
Johnson Experience, I think they'll go nuts because your fan favorite.

Speaker 3 (13:31):
They love the guy absolutely.

Speaker 2 (13:33):
And when you look back on Seawann Johnson or any player, really,
I think you'll like to remember them at their best.
You you like to remember the you know, the peak
of the of the mercury, if you know what I mean.
And I think last year twenty twenty three was as
peaky as he's been. He's been very good right through
his career. It was the fourteen seasons now there have
been times in every one of those seasons where he's

(13:53):
been very good. But I think I'll remember the twenty
twenty three Sewan Johnson as as you know, and when
the years go by and I think back, I'll think
of him the way that he I mean all but
won the Dally m all Bark, got the Warriors to
the Grand Final. And this year hasn't gone the way
he hoped. Absolutely it hasn't, But that's the essay that
I'd like to remember.

Speaker 4 (14:14):
And I'd rather look back at the Kiwi when he
played so well for them and he packed up the
Golden boot the international player way back in the day.
He was instrumental when that team was flying high in
national colors. And I think a lot of people will
look to what he did for the Kiwis as opposed
to what he did for the Warriors. But we know
he's had a huge effect. We've talked about this before,

(14:35):
the effect that has on the next generation coming through,
and I've seen it firsthand. The kids love the bloke
and he never leaves them hanging. He's always there talking,
he's always there offering a hand. An autographer we smile.
So from that aspect he's been an absolutely fantastic ambassador
for the club.

Speaker 2 (14:50):
He I totally agree the off field legacy is well
and truly secure. All out of time in the bar,
Lena Place will open the doors again on Monday.

Speaker 4 (15:00):
And it's happy and now you can stay where you want.
