Speaker 2 (00:22):
Welcome on into the Sports Fixed podcast. Tying it up
for another week on Darcy Waldgrave. It's Friday. It's the
sixth September twenty twenty four. Coming up on today's podcast,
I catch up with David Nieker. Of course, he's had
a last minute change of opponent for his fights in
just over a week's time. We'll talk to him about
(00:43):
that and his road of course to a possible world title.
David joining us shortly. I've got some opinion around harassing
sports people in the street aka Israel Dussna, although he
could learn to park and will be joined by Craig
get coming as we sit around on the Leaner and
talk about some of the big sports stories of the day.
(01:04):
We're going to get into it right here, all right now,
on the Fix. In other news, in a vocal nutshell,
this is how it's rolled. Springbok coach Rassi Rasmus decided
not to throw Sam Cane to the walls of the
judiciary for his nose breaking clash with boch Skipper CIACLESI
(01:27):
to be honest with you, I don't think he did
any of that on purpose.
Speaker 3 (01:31):
I think a yellow card might have been appropriate, or
penalty would have been appropriate, but he.
Speaker 4 (01:37):
Came off with US Seas and listen, we're not going
to say it.
Speaker 3 (01:41):
We're going to cite to you on that.
Speaker 2 (01:42):
At the US Open Belarussian Arena, Sablenka has bested the
American Emma Navarro to reach the Grand Slams Big Dance.
Her second final at Flushing Meadows, the local crowd were
hooting and a warring for their athlete, but gave arena
respect in the end.
Speaker 1 (02:00):
Well, guys, now you're two from you.
Speaker 3 (02:02):
Well, I mean that's a good time.
Speaker 1 (02:08):
That's really means a lot.
Speaker 2 (02:09):
And even though you're guys were supporting her, I see,
I had the goosebumps from you and cheering up her.
Ahead of a start of the NFL season and the
States Chiefs quarterback Patrick Maholmes has recognized the influence of
Taylor Swift on the sport. The megastar songstress dates my
homes teammate the tight end Travis Kelsey.
Speaker 3 (02:30):
See like these little girls, these daughters, and how much
they're loving and spend time with their dad watching football.
And then meeting Taylor and realized how genuine and of
course she is, and then she's really interested in football,
and she asked like a great questions. She started drawing
a place we might have to put one in.
Speaker 2 (02:43):
They said it, and that was the proof eating of it.
Speaker 1 (02:46):
We've got just the ticket. It's Sports Fix powered by
News Talks.
Speaker 2 (02:50):
Ivy David Nika the prize Fighter makes them sound quite
old school, doesn't it joins us now on weekend Sport
on z B. David, Welcome to the show. You're only
a week out before you actually get to fight on
home soil again. I believe that's the first time since
you debuted as a proach. He's been a long time
between punches, mate.
Speaker 4 (03:12):
Yeah, man, it's been a long time coming, and I'm
really excited to fight in front of my home crowd again.
It's been yeah, just over three and a half years.
So the first one was a bit of a flop.
I think the the entire fight lasted twenty three seconds,
including the including the count. So yeah, excited to excited
to have a have another crack at it.
Speaker 2 (03:30):
It wasn't already a flop. I mean you punched me,
fell over or you're saying he flopped? What was it like, Jesse? Jesse?
Might I think it was?
Speaker 4 (03:37):
Oh, I think that's what I think. That's why you
called it. He really did flop, didn't he? Maybe that's
why they called it a flop?
Speaker 2 (03:43):
Maybe? But you went on there, great guns, and you've
gone along. I think that you're You've obviously unbeaten so
far in your pro career through nine fights, and a
lot of these scraps have not gone the distance. I
think only one of them early on in your career
you actually had to go the whole lot. You get
a points decision? Is that problematic for you? Like how
(04:05):
long you can last? And do you trust your whiskers
for a long time in the room?
Speaker 4 (04:11):
Yeah, one hundred percent. I trained for ten rounds, you know,
this is this fire schedules for ten and I've trained
to ten. It's just a matter of whether or not
my opponents can can stand up to it. And I
know I've got the gas tank to break guys down,
and so I'd like to start showing that aspect of
my of my game a little bit more, you know,
(04:32):
And I need quality opposition to actually bring that, to
bring that to light.
Speaker 2 (04:37):
Let's talk about the opposition. You had an opponent, but
he got well, he tried to reduce himself up. Idiot,
but you go, he's gomburger. So you got a new
blake at late. Notice his name is Tommy Cupency. You've
got to be impressed by David Higgins and your management
crew that they've managed to sort a replacement. Well in
the place, was it twenty four to forty eight hours
(04:57):
after old mate managed to produce himself out out of contention.
Speaker 4 (05:02):
Oh man, Yeah, it was a bit disappointing. Like they
had five or six weeks to get their B sample tested,
but they obviously weren't happy with the chances of them
clearing their name with the B sample, so they waited
four or five weeks to get an independent test done,
which would have given them plenty of times to clear
(05:23):
blake system. So, yeah, we've got another opponent. And the
good thing about having to, you know, I guess, rummage
around for different opponents is that we've actually uncovered quite
a few new names that might be a good opposition
down the line. So yeah, Tommy Carpenti is the next
(05:45):
in line. But yeah, We've we've got an exciting new
arrangement with The Zone, so that's the exclusive platform to
watch the flight. And yeah, that there. I think. Actually,
this is the first desone fight in New Zealand, so
we're trying to push for people to download that app.
It is like fully digital, it's so easy now. But yeah,
(06:05):
we've got we've got a multi fight deal with them.
So ideally i roll through Tommy CARPENTI. I know he's tough,
but we roll through him and go again before the
end of the year.
Speaker 2 (06:17):
And I'm not getting paid or sponsored by Dozone, but
I've been on that and I've used that app, and
you're right dead simple, I'm all over it like a rest.
So get amongst if you want to watch Niki, of course,
you get along on the still tickets available for the fight,
and you pretty much sold out what he vited up
the vin scenes next Saturday night.
Speaker 4 (06:34):
Yeah, I think we're pretty much sold out. So out
of I think there were ninety tables, there's there's eighty
eight sold so yeah, it's gonna it's gonna be an
awesome crowd. But obviously for everybody to tune in online
is the way to do it. And ideally, ideally we
get a big stadium next. I reckon if if we
do this again, we get you know, maybe fill out
(06:55):
Spark Arena, because I I think I think all going
well and if we if we put on a good show,
which which we undoubtedly will do with four four heavyweight
belts on the trot on the night, yeah, I think
we'll be able to put together a big show before
the end of the year.
Speaker 2 (07:12):
But you're not getting too fair hit to yourself, mate.
I mean, you know they had a world heavyweight fight
at Spark Arena with Joe Parker. You know at that stage,
you know your mate settled down.
Speaker 4 (07:22):
Let's see, I'll tell you what. Duko have been putting
this this fight together for the last eighteen months and
they do nothing by half measures. So I think this
is going to be an amazing show. I know how
much hard work has gone into it, and so yeah,
getting this last minute opponent was was crucial, you know,
(07:42):
And luckily enough we've actually found someone that has has
pedigree and you know it's been this fight's been sanctioned
by the ib F and the WBO, which means that
the winner will go into the top fifteen rankings. In
those two sanctioning bodies, which is which is actually a
really big deal. And obviously this guy's tough enough. He's
(08:06):
fought fought against three formal champions and actually be in
one of them. So where Blake Caparello failed at the
top level, this guy's had success. So yeah, I'm not
taking them lovely. I'm not looking too far ahead. I
just understand that my narrative is only just beginning, you know,
And I've put so much hard work into and to
(08:28):
getting myself to this to this place, in this position.
I just have full confidence in my team around me,
and you know, I haven't cut any corners along the way,
and I'm exactly where I need to be, back in
the great country of Alta at all.
Speaker 2 (08:42):
Looking forward to next that's Saturday night. I'm still trying
to strong arm your boss Higgins to get me a seat.
We'll see they might even wear a seat if I
can get that. David all as always great to you,
Thanks so much for your time, prett well and go hard,
but looking forward to it.
Speaker 4 (08:59):
Cheers, Darcy, appreciate it.
Speaker 3 (09:01):
This is Sports.
Speaker 1 (09:02):
Fix, your daily dose of sports news by News Talks IVY.
Speaker 2 (09:08):
If you haven't caught the video, maybe you should what video. Well,
Israel dun Our, very own UFC Mixed Martial art former champion,
found himself in a bit of a squabble. It wasn't
a dust up because that could only end one way,
but it was a verbal altercation. It happened in central
Auckland a K road, just off K Road. Apparently he
(09:30):
went to grab a pie. I'm presuming it was from
Pie Rollers, a new pie shop, which is quite something else,
so I'm told. Anyway, so he gets hiss, pie comes
back and according to Israel, a racial slur was delivered
by a bystander. His mates filmed the incident and this
bloke tried to step Israel or de Sonya out, which
(09:52):
is insane. As a mixed martial artist and a UFC superstar,
There's only one way that could end, and it wouldn't
be good for the assailant. Also wouldn't be good for
Israel Dusna. He suggests his career may wind up if
he gets convicted of punching commoner in the face. So
you've got to command Israel for not losing it. Yeah,
(10:13):
there was a few vocal jabs and he had a
crack at the condition of his car, and consider he's
driving a McLaren, you'd understand why maybe Israel might like
to play that comparison game. The thing here for me
is twofold. There's something beautiful about New Zealanders that Kiwi
don't tend to get in the face of famous people,
of celebrities. They let them go, They let them go
(10:35):
about their business. They might give them a weed, chir
or a nod. But we're a pretty humble bunch. We
don't like to annoy or irritate our TV film, our
music celebrities, or our sporting celebrities. And I think we'd
like to keep it that way. So this guy rolling
up and having a crack, what is wrong with you?
Speaker 1 (10:54):
Powell?
Speaker 2 (10:54):
And secondly, Israel is the second time I've seen this
you on video parked on a broken yellow line. Learn
how to park, mate, I don't care how expensive your
ride is. Stay legal, and yeah, if you do in
front of me, I'll step you out. Know, I've just
let you get about your business, which is a fair
call and something that other bloke probably should have done.
Speaker 1 (11:17):
The Chamber is now in session on Sportsfix.
Speaker 2 (11:22):
And look who I've found that at the Leana pint
in hands. Name is Craig Coming, former Black Capital Round
tragic when it comes to cricket. Also broadcaster who comes
from me from time to time on News talk z
be mister coming, Hello, welcome into the Lena. Great to
have you on board.
Speaker 5 (11:41):
I trust you well very well, Darcy, thank you. Am
I allowed to describe what I'm drinking on the Lena
or do we keep that.
Speaker 2 (11:47):
For after six pm? Yeah? I think we probably should
and I know exactly we're going to go, and I
don't want to do that. Let's talk some sport. That's
what we're here for. And everybody's cross here is currently
is that second test the spring Box versus the All Blacks.
That's Cape Town and wholesale changes right across the border.
Scott Robinson's made what four changes? Seven changes from Rassi
(12:10):
harassmus So how's that going to lean on the game?
Do you think?
Speaker 5 (12:15):
Well, it's an interesting one. I've just been reading about
the South African changes actually, and obviously a big one
William Rue coming in at fallback, but also Andre Pollard
at ten. So now maybe you know with Pollard he's
been exceptional for many, many years. But does that mean
they're looking to change the way they're going to play
the game. Are they going to have more of a
kicking style. Are they going to go back to more
the South African style that we used to We know
(12:36):
they've got many layers. So at the moment, I think
South Africa are just leading so much because they've got
so many tricks up their sleep, Darcy.
Speaker 2 (12:43):
They've got the ability to.
Speaker 5 (12:44):
Play different ways and at the moment we're trying to
catch up. We've made some changes some you know, Scott
Robinson was big talker about Will Jordan before he became
the All Black coach, about being fifteen. He's made that change.
It's put Barrett and also TJ. Parrinat on the bench.
So you know, I'm trying to trust Mac Guttier, Darcy.
I'm trying to you know, sometimes you go, where is
it going to go? Before this tour, I said the
(13:06):
All Blacks will lose the first, but when the second?
So maybe I still got to stick to that.
Speaker 2 (13:10):
Yeah, do it. And this is interesting to me around
the strength of the spring Bucks because look sort of
a bit of a sheet soiling. The All Blacks actually
had that game, didn't they They really did? They blew
it in the last fifteen minutes, and that's kind of
depressing from our point of view. So they know they can, right.
Speaker 5 (13:33):
Yeah, I think in some ways like yeah, if they
had been blown off and scored a few late tries
the opposite way, well then it would have been a
pretty deflating performance. But they were in it for a
long long time. And if there's one place, though, Darcy,
where you're going to fall off in the back end,
it's Johannesburg, It's Alice Park. It's at high altitude, so
maybe you can understand that. Also, they've got a very
(13:53):
good bench. They rely on their bench. But I think
it's asking us good questions. We've got to make alterations,
and I think you know there's been those made.
Speaker 2 (14:02):
We're going to see.
Speaker 5 (14:03):
I mean, the difference is Darcie and I talk.
Speaker 4 (14:05):
You know.
Speaker 5 (14:05):
I used to sit at this desk and do the
old days radio sport Sunday mornings. The All Blacks would
win by twenty five and people used to ring up
and go mad that they only won by twenty five.
I actually really like it at the moment. Of course,
I want more All Black side to win, but I
actually like knowing and what's going to happen. Of course
I want them here at the end. But it's a
nice time because for so long and a lot of people, Darcy,
(14:26):
you know it didn't enjoy the cream of the cream
when we were the top of the pops bike a
long way.
Speaker 2 (14:32):
Maybe they used to complain about being bored. No, this
is to say, you ring me back in ten years,
will no longer Domina and you tell me how boring
that exactly?
Speaker 5 (14:42):
I used to say at the time. Jeez, this is
not going to happen forever because it's impossible. Sport doesn't
work that way. But I'm enjoying this, but I also
think we're also I mean, Scott Robinson's got a blanket
at the moment, and how long does that blanket last
where it's a little bit of a I suppose it's
okay you're new into the job because I don't reckon
many other all black coaches have been led away with
(15:03):
the last six weeks, seven weeks. He's got that blanket.
But if they lose this weekend, it could be the
blanket off. And you know what our public's like. We
have high expectations.
Speaker 2 (15:11):
Out yeah, looking forward to each way. Quite frankly, they
can't lose. We win. I'm happy we lose. I've got
a great week's talk back. I'm just being honest about that.
Craig coming, Hey, cricket. How exciting is this? It's still
under the radar to a degree. I'm trying my best
to bang the drum. But a huge amount. Six Test
matches back on back, on back on back against India,
(15:35):
against Sri Lanka, against Afghanistan to start in the sub continent,
straight back. Three Test matches against England, all before Christmas.
How cool?
Speaker 5 (15:44):
Our nine Test matches dar Si well in four months.
Were used to having nine Test matches something and we're
gonna have a dry period after this. But nine Test
matches in the next three and a half months in
the subcontinent, India, obviously Sri Lanka. We're playing Afghanistan first
in India and then England back home. Like for a
Test tragic like you and I are. This is this
is heaven.
Speaker 2 (16:04):
It shows the.
Speaker 5 (16:04):
Game and it'll give their black Caps the opportunity. We
don't get to practice games. We don't get you know,
continuity of formats. We often played two match series. We've
got a real focus now on Test cricket, leading up
until Christmas, and my expectations are high, Darcy. I'm going
to hold them high and I expect this Black Cap
side to go out and perform well. And there's going
to be pressure on because again India and India is
(16:26):
the toughest thing. But this first Test against Afghanistan starting
on Monday night, is not going to be easy. I
think our bowlers will be strong against their battits, but
trust me, Darcy, you watch their bowler's bowl. It's going
to be a real challenge for us when it comes
to playing them on conditions they used to.
Speaker 2 (16:41):
Who's the most pressure on from a batsman's perspective, I've.
Speaker 5 (16:46):
Got another team. I know Will Young was there. I
think there's pressure on all of them because we haven't
performed as well as we'd like. I know it was
probably more white ball, but there's pressure on all of
them because we're getting a little bit older. There's some
people nipping at their heels or is it time for
a generational change? So you know, that's this challenge on
all of them, and they've got to start playing as
a team and they've got to start playing. Remember, Darci,
(17:08):
we don't normally plick one spinner when we played his cricket.
We try not to pick a spinner here we are
in the sub continent, we might be picking two or
even three. So there's also pressure on Gary Stead and
the way he selects a side along with him South there,
because they need to be able to get the balance
right to be able to perform out in the park.
Speaker 2 (17:26):
Great timing too, isn't it. That's what I'm liking the most. Well,
it isn't.
Speaker 3 (17:31):
Well.
Speaker 2 (17:32):
I finished work at eight o'clock, so by the time
I roll home at eight thirty, I've got a good
two or three hours to sit there and watch cricket
of an evening, so I.
Speaker 5 (17:38):
Know I've got to get up and work and coach
in the morning.
Speaker 2 (17:41):
That's my problem. No, you're not that old. You'll be fine,
just like quick nap. You'll be sweet as when you
get through to that. Look, it's so much to look
forward to. It's going to be extraordinarily difficult, never easy
during the subcontinent. But yeah, you said, we're expecting big things,
a lot of pressure on tim southey, and of course
(18:01):
all those spinner's coming as well. That the sant and
the clause are revenger and how much work he can do.
Of course, ajs ptell that great record over and Mumbai.
There's there's plenty of time to make a name for yourself.
It should be huge. Do you just stay up late,
get up early and deal with it. Coming strong coffee
and good piratery dissecting the sporting agenda.
Speaker 1 (18:22):
