Speaker 2 (00:17):
This is Sportsfix Howard by News Talks EDB.

Speaker 3 (00:21):
Hey, Hey, Hey, how you doing. Welcome in to Sports Fix.
It's the tenth of September twenty twenty four. I'm Darcy
Watergrave and here's you Fix, your daily dose of sport,
talking big sports stories from home, from away and the
rest coming up. In this episode, I'll catch up with
mee Lee Kerr. The White Fans team has been announced

(00:42):
to disappear off to the United Arab Emirates to take
on the world and the T twenty I World Cup
gets underway at the start of October. We'll talk to
Melely about their chances, the makeup of the team and
why they haven't been going great guns of recent times.
And that's being polite. Also whilin to Josh at Oca

(01:04):
NRLA regulars clockwork. It's the final series and somebody's gotten
themselves the trouble already allegedly. I better throw that in there.
Will be joined by News Talk ZB Sport editor Play
Wilson as we throw around some of the big subject
of sport over the last of twenty four hours, and
I think we should probably just get stuck into it.

(01:26):
Let's go.

Speaker 1 (01:27):
In other news.

Speaker 3 (01:31):
And speaking in sport today, AD's finals time in the
nrl Q trouble at the ranks, violence, drink driving Dad.
This time it's drugs. Allegedly, Josh ad Okar, one of
the game's outstanding talents, has been busted in a roadside
drug test. Still waiting on a b sample. Bulldogs general
manager Phil Gould here with the latest. Josh has stood

(01:53):
himself down for this weekend's picture versus the Sea Eagles.

Speaker 4 (01:57):
Josh has made the decision stand down from this week's game,
not make himself available so the team can get on
with its preparation. But I want to emphasize that Josh
believes he's completely innocent. He's been quite concerned about what's
in the last twenty four hours and can't understand how
he's tested positive.

Speaker 3 (02:13):
At least the bunker is not on the news. Scott
McGlaughlin Andy Carr, pilot for Penske, has described his early
trepidation as he entered the American Wings and Sles category
after dominating in supercars.

Speaker 5 (02:26):
And initially I was a little daunted by like, you know,
then there's gonna be a lot to learn and figure out.
I really enjoyed, you know. The nuances are like working
out where I pushed the button to use the hybrid,
how to regenerate the batteries. Plus on top of that,
you're trying to say fuel, you're trying to go far.

Speaker 3 (02:41):
And he stirred in the championship after four years in
the game. Can't win it really unless lightning strikes. Last
Races is coming up on Monday, and Phoenix import Kazuki
Nagasawa spoken of the physical size of the A Leagues
players after he's transferred to the Capitol from Japan's second division.

Speaker 6 (03:02):
Everybody has a lay county and a good strong body.

Speaker 1 (03:05):
Also their habit, the technique.

Speaker 5 (03:06):
But if you like everybody, you have a shng body
and that's goared run.

Speaker 3 (03:11):
Your thing is very far Here some sports stars speaking
for the day.

Speaker 2 (03:15):
Leading of X We've got just the ticket. It's sports
VEX News Talks IVY.

Speaker 3 (03:22):
Were joined now by a white fern Meelee Kerr. Ahead
of a rather hectic schedule. Right in the middle of
that schedule is the T twenty I World Cup. It's
over in Dubai the United Arab Emirates. The team of
fifteen has just been announced. Me Kerr is amongst that number.
No surprise there. She's quite handy with a bat and
a ball. Meely welcome to the show. I believe you

(03:44):
get a couple of days at home and then you're
tearing away again. What Australia then do you buy.

Speaker 2 (03:48):
It in India? What?

Speaker 3 (03:49):
Wow? That's that's that's quite the mission.

Speaker 6 (03:52):
Yeah, it's a full on schedule, but it's exciting with
what's coming up and really looking forward to it. Nice
that the team's been named today and we're really looking
forward to getting overseas and playing in different conditions and
there's nothing better than playing in a World Cup.

Speaker 3 (04:07):
There is with the team itself. You look at that
fifteen that's there and it's got a serious amount of
talented long term individuals which is good. Not too dissimilar
to the team though. Of the recent years which I
of course a spade of spade hasn't been going well
has it. You had that rotten old tour of England.
You didn't do much better over here as well. What's

(04:29):
the confidence levels like amongst the athletes right now? Maybe?

Speaker 6 (04:33):
Yeah? It's a good question. I guess the thing with
like sport, that sport's tough and cricket's extremely tough. It's
a fickle game, and I think, you know, we've recently
just come off a really tough tour against England and
for us so we know as cricketers and as players,
we actually are all getting better, and I think we've
all made a lot of strides forwards and the results

(04:56):
didn't quite show that in England, but with playing against
one of the best sides in the world, you hope
that the learnings and there's improvements that I guess we've
made from that series and hopefully can implement in the
World Cup. But the thing with our World cuts is
that you play every every team months or the teams
in your pool once and it's a one off game

(05:18):
and anything can happen. And with T twenty crack at
the shorter format, you know a good day can win
you a game. So I think it brings everyone closer
together and there's a lot of talent in this group.
But yeah, with tough tours, the last thing you want
is that denting the confidence, So I think it's really
important to keep building the belief in players and allowing

(05:39):
players to go out there and express themselves because that's
what they've been picked for.

Speaker 3 (05:43):
You said it can go one way or the other
because it's such a short game, and we get that.
But when you get beaten five zip and even in
the Odies it was three zip, but it's a different version,
it's hard to gain confidence out of that as a
fan because arguably five games you should have maybe nicked two,
possibly three of those. To see her, I'm coming from

(06:04):
here where we want to support the team. It's not
looking good. What can you tell us to make us
go Damn, I'm buying into this. I want to keep watching.

Speaker 6 (06:11):
Yeah, I guess one it's your country, so you hope
that you have the support of your country behind you.
And I think the other one is I mean, Pinnacle
events are always exciting, you know. You see we've spot
all around the world that it's hard. You know, you
look at the all blocks at the moment the Warriors

(06:31):
this year compared to last year, it's hard to consistently
stay at the top. But I think we've been working
bloody hard behind the scenes and what we've done with
the amount of camps we've had to help grow our
game and as you said, losing does dent confidence and
that doesn't help always, but if we can stay positive,
and that's to do with the culture and the team

(06:53):
and building confidence because as I said, cricket's very fickle
and sometimes the outcomes don't always represent the work you've
put in. But I think when we go and play
more games and more cricket got to go on with
a fresh mind. You're no better or worse than you were,
whether you got runs or didn't get runs. And you've

(07:16):
got to back yourself every time. And with World Cup events,
it's exciting. It's an exciting opportunity on the world stage.
And instead of playing with fear and being low and confidence,
you want to be able to express yourself because not
many people get to say they've represented their country in
a World Cup.

Speaker 3 (07:33):
What do you see as far as the team advancing
and mention that you are learning? There are areas where
you are improving. It's more apparent to people on the
inside than the outside. We can just see games where
you haven't had the success we want. So internally, where
the areas you think you're actually doing well, How do
you rate that? How do you come to these conclusions.

Speaker 6 (07:55):
Meaning, yeah, I think over the few years we've grown
a lot as a team, and as I said, results
haven't always shown that. But I think the key to
being great is probably the top two inches and it
comes down to belief and evidence and sometimes with New
Zealand and that humble nature, I think it can be

(08:15):
upon us to talk down on ourselves at times, but
we've got to keep believing and I think that's what
it will come down to. It the World Cup is
whoever believes in themselves the most. And the thing is
everyone's got the skills, everyone's done the work, so it's
about how you can go and put it out there
when you're in high pressure situations. And that's what great
teams do at World Cups and that's something we want

(08:38):
to be able to do. And if we can keep
I guess building that belief and confidence because of what
we're doing at the moment behind the scenes, hopefully that
can then lead to results.

Speaker 3 (08:47):
When you look at the number of players and I'm
sure at the top of their game, and I love
seeing someone like Lee Casprick come back from what she
is and lead to who and the like as well.
This is great stuff. The fact that divine and baits
have stick around. I suppose the question here though, is
what's the level like coming beneath because we're not seeing
new players coming through. The results haven't been there. The

(09:08):
players have held on to their role, so it's the
next level coming through? Are they pushing hard enough? Do
we have the depth in women's cricket here in New
Zealand to I suppose threaten if you will, the status quo.

Speaker 6 (09:21):
Maybe. I think the depth is definitely coming through and
we saw that over the summer with the New Zealand
A series where they bet England and at the England
A side who in England you've got all of them
are professional cricketers, whereas the girls that bet their England
A side aren't professional cricketers or on contract. So I
think that's pretty impressive. And I mean, there hasn't quite

(09:44):
been the investment in the women's sport or a women's
cricket in New Zealand, but now it's improving a lot
and getting so much better. And because of that, I
think we'll see a whole lot of improvement. And I
mean some of the girls in our group, the youngest
is still twenty years old, so it is young, but
I think there's definitely people pushing and having a series

(10:05):
and domestic tracks and winter contracts help improve that because
you've got people knocking on the door. And I think
now as we're moving forward and that investment is starting
to be put in, you're going to see You're going
to see the competitiveness in the team and within within
the sport and only see growth from that because it's

(10:28):
the only way to get better is when you're able
to do it as a full time job and commit
to the sport. And that's what we're starting to be
able to do now.

Speaker 3 (10:37):
Hey meely Kah, always a please to chatting with you.
Thanks so much for your time. Three games in Australia
is the warm up. A couple over there when you
get to the T twenty World Cup and in your
group India Australia at Sri Lanka and Pakistan. Friday the
fourth of October is when that gets underway. More sleepless
nights for dars Meale. Thanks for your time, Yeer sank

(10:58):
Darcy dude.

Speaker 2 (11:00):
This is Sports Fix, your daily does of sports news,
how and by news talks.

Speaker 3 (11:07):
It's finals in the n r L. One thing we
can be assured of is there will be quality football.
There will be high paced, aggressive, nasty, collision based football.
There will be some really bad calls from the bunker
and from the referees, and also there will be players
finding themselves in hot water. It always happens. That is

(11:32):
the NRL. You can't complain about lack of content from
a media point of view when it comes to these players.
The latest character he's found himself running foul of the
law is josh ado Car. He is a sensational winger
for the Bulldogs. The guy possesses the most ridiculous step,

(11:53):
the most amazing speed, and he can also fly through
the air to score too. He is someone worth paying
your ticket price for that. He's stood himself down on
the eve of the finals after allegedly returning a positive
roadside test for cocaine. The players decided after meeting with

(12:13):
team bosses that he will step down from Sunday's elimination
final against Manly, and this is the Dog's first appearance
since twenty sixteen in the finals. At Okar is adamant
that he didn't consume any illicit drugs, but he set
himself down because he does not want his situation attracting

(12:33):
a media circus to the Bulldogs club ahead of what
basically is shaping as their most important game in eight years.
It makes perfect sense to me wise decision. Whether it
was his decision or was casually nudged by the club
to make that decision, it doesn't really matter. It's really
going to affect their chances of beating Manly on Sunday,

(12:57):
a finisher of that quality, But it is the sensible
thing to do. And there we go again with the NRL.
There's always some form of chaos, always some form of controversy.
Always dry are going on on the field and off
the field. It's in the news. It doesn't want to
be in the news, but it is there. Good, bad
or indifferent. Well, no publicity is bad publicity, right. It

(13:20):
might not be the most pleasant story in the world,
but it's the Tuesday before the final start and the
NRL are in the news making headlines already.

Speaker 2 (13:28):
The Chamber is now in session on Sportsfix.

Speaker 3 (13:34):
Now it's warmart. Welcome to the Lena to Clay Wilson,
news b Director of Sport. Good day to you, good sir,
I trust you all well, very well. Greeting star and
thanks very much for joining us Baits and Divine again.
Ninth tournament is White Ferns in a T twenty World Cup.
It's great the experience in this side. There is only

(13:56):
one player who has not experienced a T twenty World Cup.
There's fifteen of them. But to me, this suggests there's
not a lot bubbling under because they haven't provided. It's
I don't want to say it, but they've been awful
and nothing looks like it's changed. Yet we've got the
same players repeating. What does that say to you, Clay.

Speaker 7 (14:19):
Well, fourteen of these players went to England in July
and got absolutely pantsed five nil. Yet fourteen of those
players have been retained in this squad to go to
the T twenty World Cup. So I think that's the
thing that jumps out to me, along with, like you say,
the fact that Sophie Devine Susie Bates have both are

(14:40):
both going to their ninth T twenty World Cup. I
think it's every T twenty Women's World Cup in history.
Is great in terms of having that experience, but it
also underlines what I think has been the key issue
for the White Ferns over the past two or three years.
Which is that what is coming through in terms of
players of that caliber that are going to take the

(15:02):
White Ferns to back to being competitive with the top
teams are simply not coming through because I don't think
you would bump necessarily Sophie Devine or Susie Bates out.
But some of these players in the middle and sort
of lower tier of this White Fan squad, you have
to think their positions have to be under pressure if
the team is not performing. But clearly fourteen of those

(15:22):
players have retained their spot from the last series and
there's an issue there with the players that are coming
through from the next level to put pressure on some
of these other players in the White furn squad.

Speaker 3 (15:32):
Let's move away from them and move to another cricket story.
Excuse my French freaking nightmare or what is going on?
Afghanistan black Caps. They've got a deck, they've got a
field they've given Test match status to, it's got no drainage.
And when is it this time of year? Exactly, Clay,
We're in the middle of.

Speaker 7 (15:52):
The monsoon season in India. You know when you go
outside to your back lawn after it's been pouring with
rain and you pressure your foot down into the grass
and it's like a sponge instead of that soppy kind
of seeing someone put their foot into the turf of
this outfield in a similar kind of situation. It's not
hugely conducive. You had to think to playing an international

(16:13):
Test match.

Speaker 3 (16:14):
They're digging holes now and trying to replace it with
my own astro turf or something. They've got a beggar
fertilizer from the Bunnings in the eighth. This is so backward.
It's an embarrassment to World Cricket. It's an embarrassment to
the BCCI.

Speaker 7 (16:32):
And I'm sure they knew they were going to be
righting their luck to try and get a game in
in this particular region where it is still the back
end of the monsoon season. As I understand that, they
tried for two or three other venues. One couldn't be
used because there's an India Test match. It's the Indian
men's team themselves are playing a Test match coming up there.

(16:52):
The other one was unavailable because there's some kind of
domestic competition, domestic T twenty competition going on there. So
this venue was clearly not the first choice. Might have
been the third or the fourth choice, and it was like, hey,
we have to have it here.

Speaker 3 (17:04):
On the fifth and sixth choices must have been a poll.
This is the third.

Speaker 7 (17:10):
But they were left without much choice at this time
of the year, but to have it in this venue
roll the DI said, hope that those torrential.

Speaker 3 (17:17):
They can't play down pause. They can't because this doesn't
This didn't dry yesterday and it was no rain. Someone's
going to do an ankle and that's what worries me,
or they're going to do a knee. They need to
abandon this in my humble opinion. Yeah, and it does
look like it's heading that way. I mean, they're clearly,
they're clearly you know that they haven't been on the
field yet and we're on the well it's talking now.

(17:39):
This is the second morning supposed to be underway. And
you know, you think that these.

Speaker 7 (17:44):
Monsoon type brains probably come down at night. And I
think it was a downpour of about sixty to ninety
minutes last night. That's all it took for a wet
outfield to become sodden again. And it's a beautifully blue
sky day over there. But out that outfield, like you say,
not draining and Yeah, it's going to have to be
a lot of drying going before it become becomes safer
players to be running around.

Speaker 3 (18:05):
On that unless leaves that unfortunate situation to one so
I will finish things for another unfortunate situation. Josh Adakar,
who is one of the most exciting players in the NRL,
the guy's goal I wish he was playing for the Warriors,
found himself on a bit of strife, allegedly testing positive.

Speaker 7 (18:22):
For allegedly I feel goods admitted.

Speaker 3 (18:24):
Okay, yeah, okay, I just like using allegedly, so no
one sends me to prison. It's fair enough. Go to the NRL.
I love it, don't they right on time?

Speaker 7 (18:34):
The first thing I thought, Rugby league. You know, it's
important to note that he is awaiting results of a
second test and he vehemently denies that he had any
cocaine or he'd taken any cocaine, that he had any
cocaine in his system. But the NRL has a way
of producing these stories, doesn't it. And you know, for
the team like the Bulldogs, I think they haven't been

(18:54):
to the finals for twenty sixteen, so you know that's
that's what eight years eight year. Wait and then you
get in in the and on the week of of
your first finals game in eight years, you're you know,
arguably your best player has had to Now we've just
found out stand himself down from the game because the
club couldn't stand him down because of player association rules.

(19:17):
But he stood himself down to not be a distraction
from the team. So I mean, look innocent until proven guilty.
And it may come to be that it was a
complete false positive, false positive and no harm done. But
it's just I guess the trend in the NRL sometimes

(19:37):
seems to be with these stories continually. I mean, we've
had several of them throughout the course of the season
involving a certain white powder. So Locke, we'll wait and
see to see what's actually happened here in terms of
Josh had Oca, but either way, not great for the
Bulldogs to not have him available for this game against
Manly on Sunday.

Speaker 3 (19:56):
Chose himself to stand down with huge encouragement, not expect
from everybody else. Make the decision by yourself. We are
not in fair and news talkers Z be sports or extra.
Clay Wilson, thank you very much for joining us.
