On Sports Fix with Jason Pine and D'Arcy Waldegrave for Thursday 19 September 2024, we catch up with our man on the ground in Sydney town, Elliott Smith. He’s got the Bledisloe Cup game 1 call at 5:45 on Saturday afternoon. The All Blacks team is out, what does Elliott make of the selection? Only minor adjustments - a very predictable line up, yes?

D’Arcy bloviates over the next big thing in NZ cricket, the blossoming quick Will O’Rourke. He’s shown plenty in 2 tests and 3 sessions, but what do we need to be aware of in his development?

Jason and D’Arcy climb into the Chamber for a natter at the leaner, talking the main sport stories of the day including their respects to the late Sam Malcolmson.

This is Sportsfix Howard By News Talks EDB.

Speaker 2 (00:20):
Hello and welcome into another edition of the Sportsbox podcast.
For today, Thursday, the nineteenth of September. I'm Jason Pine
with from a Good Mate alongside.

Speaker 3 (00:29):
Garcy Audodrave on miss you Piney. I love reuniting again
on a Thursday.

Speaker 4 (00:34):
It's so much fun. What have we got lined up?

Speaker 2 (00:37):
Well, lots to chat about as far as All Black
selection is concerned, the passing of one of our former
favorites here on the radio, and some cricketers, well, I
know you've got some thoughts on one of our cricketers.
As far as a guest is concerned, who can we
look forward to having a chen wab with Chin wag
with today?

Speaker 3 (00:52):
Well, Elliott Smith. Of course, he is the Newstalk's EB
voice of rugby. It'd be insane of us not to
catch up because he's right in the thick of the action.
He's been over in Sydney now for a couple of days,
wearing shorts and sandals.

Speaker 4 (01:03):
Apparently the weather it's fantastic, so we'll catch up with Ali.

Speaker 3 (01:06):
Just have we look at what I believe Heiney is
a fairly standard team. No surprise, is pretty safe, which
almost has been.

Speaker 4 (01:15):
A homer of Robertson's selection so far.

Speaker 2 (01:18):
All right, don't use up all your good stuff, let's
get into it. In other news, checking out some of
the big sports stories around today. April Tan, you're the
first thing to get through to the America's Cup Challenger
Series decider in Barcelona, eliminating a Lingy five to two
in the semi finals. Here's their helmsman, so Ben Ainsley.

Speaker 5 (01:36):
I think we're all very relieved to have gone through
today and survived and made it through to the final
because in their stuff anything could happen.

Speaker 2 (01:42):
Now the dual remains alive, American Magic beating Luna Rossa
twice to set the best of nine contents at four
to three. Confidence All Blacks loose forward while Si Titi
will again step up and Saturday's opening Bletterslow Cup Nats
in Sydney. Here's his coach, Scott Robinson.

Speaker 5 (01:56):
Don't do it again. He just got to believe it,
rise up to occasion. He's come through pretty quickly, you know,
with his age and as you're getting on, I'm along
the way. He's he's a good kind of good pro
and we've just been really really impressed with him and
which he does off the field, and I just take
him under his wing.

Speaker 2 (02:10):
And Shrilanka three hundred and two for seven. It stumps
on the opening the first cricket Test against New Zealand
at gaul will I Rock taking three for fifty four
for New Zealand.

Speaker 6 (02:18):
Tom and I were getting pretty good character and the
coms are just to run hard, try for the deck hard.
I think probably scattered around a little bit more than
what I wanted to, but when I was in the
right spot, happened to get lucky enough to take a few.

Speaker 3 (02:30):
Uges use and a Vinion.

Speaker 1 (02:32):
It's Sports Fix with Jason Hine and Dussy Wildegrave.

Speaker 3 (02:37):
Is it the dawning of a new era? Has a
star been born in New Zealand cricket or the media
giving him the kiss of death by talking him up
after only two and a half Test matches as a
guy who's only been playing first class cricket for about
two and a half years. In fact, he debuted as
a Test cricketer only two years into playing for Canterbury.

Speaker 4 (03:01):
Will I rock as a fast ball.

Speaker 3 (03:03):
He's a paceman, is a pacement with control and that
is the key thing. No, he's not blistering it down
at one hundred and fifty plus clicks, but he's showing
a high average speed and more importantly he's showing control
with the ball. We saw that when he debut with
a nine wicket bag. Really something quite extraordinary. This is

(03:24):
only his third Test match and currently he's got fourteen
Test wickets at seventeen and a half. His career in
first class cricket for Canterbury sixty one wickets at twenty six.

Speaker 4 (03:37):
Man has got some talent. I suppose. The big thing
we have to.

Speaker 3 (03:41):
Be well aware of with willow' rourke is at twenty
three years of age, not to over bowl the guy.
He's not quite as tall as Jamison, but he's tall
enough one hundred and ninety three centimeters in New Money
that is six foot to four. Very important to keep
this guy as he grows under wraps to a degree

(04:02):
so we don't break the guy.

Speaker 4 (04:04):
He is a rare talent.

Speaker 3 (04:06):
Born in England, as it was when he was five
years old, ended up growing up in Auckland, and his
old man used to play first class cricket for Wellington,
so he's got a history. It looks like he knows
exactly what he's doing. I just im poor New Zealand cricket.
Don't break him, don't over bowl him. He's got a
lot of growing to do, maybe not physically but definitely mentally.

(04:30):
And this could be the man that would take us
to and through a new era of New Zealand Test cricket.
Sure that's a lot to lay on the shoulders of
one individual, but he looks extraordinarily promising and I'm celebrating
the arrival of yet another genuine quick in the New
Zealand bowling ranks.

Speaker 1 (04:50):
Dissecting the sporting agenda, It's Sportsfix with Jason Vine and
Darcy Waldergrave.

Speaker 3 (04:56):
And the Fix now goes to Sydney Town ahead of
the first Bledslow Cup matchm in Australia and New Zealand.
Called it six on a Saturday afternoon, A man in
the spots, the voice of rugby from News Talks, MB
Elliott Smith Elliott, welcome to the program. And to be fair,
the team that was released earlier today pretty standard, not
really any great surprises within that lineup.

Speaker 7 (05:19):
Get a Darcy Yeah, I think you're right. It is
largely predictable. I suppose the biggest one of those changes
is Boden Barratt being restored to fallback a week or
two weeks on from moving to the bench behind Will Jordan,
Will Jordan moving back to the wing and then call
of Clark's fit again. So that's the justification for restoring
the back three that started in Johannesburg when the attack

(05:41):
did look a lot better. They scored four tries of
course on that afternoon despite losing, so the restored that
combination and move Boden Barrett to fallback. So he's Joe
out of the team or out of the starting fifteen,
and Jo you're back into the run on side for
this weekend. Obviously running football likely to be the case
in sunny conditions on a Sydney afternoon on Saturday, but

(06:02):
certainly the highest profile of the changes to the All
Blacks team elsewhere fearly predictable. You see Clarke back from injury,
that Ethan de Grew back in the mix as well,
and Wallace Atiti retaining his spot at blindside flanker after
a pretty good run on debut has to be said
in Cape Town, so he gets the not again. Is
the All Blacks, you know, make some little tweaks, but

(06:22):
as you said, Darcy, you know, relatively predictable for this
test here in Sydney.

Speaker 3 (06:27):
Is this a move that suggests it's an anti move
for Will Jordan or more of a positive move for
Bowden Barrett, if that makes sense.

Speaker 7 (06:37):
I agree. I think you look at that and I
think it's probably an anti move for Will Jordan around
the combination that they just want to get that back
three clicking, and it feels like it hasn't really clicked
the season. They've gone with a number of different combinations
throughout the season around who started on what wing and
who started at full back. You know, Petter Fetter started

(06:59):
the year out and then Boden Barrett was coming off
the bench to replace him at full back, and then
Boden Barrett was starting at full back. Well Jordan there
on the wings with Mark Khalire and Will Jordan's back
in the mix there. So I think it speaks to
perhaps just a lack of certainty around the best combination
and by moving it back this week, they feel that
this is probably the best combination at the moment. I

(07:20):
know Will Jordan, you know very much keen to play
more fullback, but it's back in the right pieces into place.
And I think we saw in Cape Town that, you know,
maybe Mark Khala just a little bit out of sorts
at the moment. Sevu Reese probably likewise. So that kind
of means that you've got to play the hot hands,
and that's Boden Barrett, who's been pretty good I think
so far this season. Maybe an off day in Johannesburg,

(07:41):
but that's probably the best combination for this point in time.
But as I said that, I think it is still
a relatively live discussion around what is the best makeup
of the back three for this All Blacks team.

Speaker 3 (07:52):
Sam Kaine, I guess an odd nineteen ninth Test match.
So it looks like you'll notch up the ton in Wellington.
Couldn't have him to a nicer BLOWO. This is really good.
And he's not there out of congratulations for your hard work.
He's there because he's a great player and he's providing
plenty of what yeah.

Speaker 7 (08:09):
It is And it was interesting to hear Scott Robertson
talking to the media this morning sort of saying, well,
how long is this spon song going to go on for?
Because they know he's leaving, but he's in such irrepressible
form at the moment that they can't keep him out.
So I think we probably all thought that maybe his
lot might be just coming off the bench and adding
some experience in the closing stages of tests and you know,

(08:30):
notching up the hundred on the way, and if that
was that, then that's a pretty good finish to his
test career. But as it happens, he's usurped Old and
Papoli out of the starting team and he's made that
seven jersey back his own again and you know how
many more tests are going to play well? As you said,
one hundred next week. But the kind of form that
he's in is just making him very very hard to
leave out of this all Blacks team. And that's testament

(08:52):
to the you know, the kind of character that he is.
You know, it is twilight of his test career. Would
have been very very easy for him to sort of
go off into the sunset and chip away and make
some appearances off the bench, maybe get some of the
starts against the lesser lights, but he's been very very
impressive and one of the first names down on the
team sheet and reunite that combination with Ardie Saviga while

(09:14):
a Titi, they're on the blind as well. It's a
formidable loose for Trio that the all blacks are putting
in there, even though you know one blurk's about to
depart the game from New Zealand.

Speaker 4 (09:23):
What the tit?

Speaker 3 (09:23):
Alex Smith joins us in a lot of applauded for
what he did. Now let's just be slightly critical. You
need to step back and look at where improvens need
to be made for Wallace because he was pretty flashy
in the loose. He looked good. He's up against an
Australian team that you're down on their luck to be pleasant.
Where do you think he needs to lift to selp
I suppose see all that problematic sex position.

Speaker 7 (09:46):
Well, I think the miss tackles column is the one
that he needs to look at. So he missed three
in cape shown he just had did a lot of
good stuff with the ball in hand, but he can't
afford to miss that many test tackles at this level
as a player, so that needs to be something those
spot tackles needs to be better because if you miss one,
then that puts the rest of the team under pressure,
puts the defensive line under pressure. So he's going to

(10:07):
be better at that, but he'll learn that. I think
he's a character that's willing to learn and develop his game,
as we've seen through his meteoric rise from Chiefs development
right through to you know, starting with the Chiefs number
eight jersey this season. So he's willing to put in
the work. He gets another opportunity on Saturday with Ethan
Blackhead are still troubled by the hamstring injury that kept
him out in Cape Town. It's another opportunity and I

(10:29):
think you get that mistackle column down. You know, there's
always going to be miss tackles in a game from
any team, but I think if you can nullify that
a little bit, we know what he's capable of with
ball and handmades and great runs in Cape Town. I
think this Australian team and playing against the will suitballers
to tea. So you think about you know, the kind
of loose forwards that have previously had success against Australia

(10:49):
in the past. You know a lot of those the
hard running type of you know, loose forwards that can
carry hard and bend the defensive line. Different kind of
style defensively Australia put out there rather than South Africa,
who are much more in your face and that rush defense.
Australia don't tend to do that as much. So it
gives players light wallers a tt time with ball in

(11:10):
hands to really cause some havoc and I think that's
what they want to see from an all black's perspective
comes set it after the.

Speaker 1 (11:16):
Chamber is now in session on Sportsfax.

Speaker 2 (11:20):
Time for us to lean on some leaners inside the chamber.
Jason and Darcy Thursday Friday, we get the place all
to ourselves, Dars, and there's a bit to get through today.
All blacks you mentioned in the intro to the podcast
today are fairly standard sort of a selection that we
saw this morning name for Saturday's Test against Australia in Sydney.

(11:40):
There were changes, but nothing which really jumped down and
smacked you in the side of the head.

Speaker 3 (11:44):
Do you see this as being, as we discussed with Alie,
a bit of a push in the face for Will
Jordan because he's got to go back to the wing
and Bowden Barrett comes in at fall back or do
you believe it's more of a pragmatic move trying to
get the best.

Speaker 4 (11:58):
Out of those players.

Speaker 2 (11:59):
I think it's the second of those two things. Yeah.
I mean Will Jordan, as we know, during Rays's time
at the Crusaders, was almost exclusively used at full wack.
He was the Crusaders number fifteen. And I think we
all expect that when Razer got his hands on the
All Blacks and Will Jordan was fit to play again,
that there would be a move to get him to
fall back, pretty much on a full time basis. I
get the feeling if they'd beaten the South Africa in

(12:20):
Cape Town, he might have stayed at fallback. But I
just think the back three there, Talaya, Reese and Jordan,
we were targeted. I'm pleased to see Caleb Clark back,
I think targeted perhaps, and we look at Cape Town, Talaya, Reese, Jordan,
we looked to Sydney Clark, Jordan, Bowden Barrett. It's only
one of the three survives, and it's not even in

(12:41):
the same position.

Speaker 4 (12:42):
It looks like Cortez is the man of the l
and TJ.

Speaker 3 (12:45):
Pettinara once cam royguard it comes back maybe surplus to requirements,
which is not an entirely bad thing. I mean, if
TJ's listening, I'm really sorry about this. But I think
we've got the packing one and now haven't we?

Speaker 2 (12:58):
I think?

Speaker 6 (12:59):
So?

Speaker 2 (12:59):
Yeah, what did you make of Wallace a Titi again
being given the number six jersey? But a mail around
perhaps about him going to number eight where he's played
so effectively for the Chiefs. Maybe Artie Savia going onto
the other run?

Speaker 4 (13:10):
Are you going to remove Ardie Savia from the note?

Speaker 7 (13:13):
Not at all?

Speaker 2 (13:13):
No, No, I'm just giving I'm just giving him a
different number. Not that it matters what's on his back.
He could have four on his back and it's still
play well. No, I think there was a bit of
mail around that perhaps Savia might go to, UH might
go to. In fact, it might have been the same
three s TT Kane and Savia. But Savia seven, Caine six,
Titi eight. Maybe it doesn't matter if it's the same three.

(13:34):
But yeah, I think you know, Wallace was so good
at number eight for the Chiefs.

Speaker 3 (13:37):
Yeah, as Elliott pointed out, though some defensive lapses and
that has to be sorted out. You can't put pressure
on the rest of the team by missing a handful
of tackles. I think open play. When you consider Sydney
fine day afternoon, hard ground, he's going to be quite
a handful. But you can't just survive on your attacking
prowess in that role.

Speaker 4 (13:59):
You've got to know how to chop people down.

Speaker 2 (14:01):
Let's go to the cricket where it stumps. On day
one in Gaul Sri Lanka three hundred and two for seven,
Will o'rourka, you've just talked about three for fifty four
the best of the New Zealand bowlers. Even the fact
that someone bowling bowling seam is the best of the
bowlers on day one or any day in Gaul is interesting.
I like you. I like the cut of the young man.

Speaker 3 (14:20):
Well, you can't not he's done really well since he's
been dragged into the side.

Speaker 4 (14:24):
I feel a little sorry.

Speaker 3 (14:26):
For Matt Henry because you know he's been playing second
fiddle for quite some time and suddenly he gets an
opportunity with of course bolt are disappearing and he presented
particularly well and then whoops someone else and to.

Speaker 4 (14:38):
Take his place. That's the way of international cricket.

Speaker 3 (14:41):
But O'Rourke a whole lot to light there, especially in
those conditions. But Jason, are you a bit concerned about
us batting last on this day?

Speaker 2 (14:49):
Yes, i am. I wondered which of us was going
to bring this up, because if it's turning like that
on day one, goodness only knows what it'll do on
days four and five. If forget that far. Look, I
think if he said to New Zealand, you know you're
going to lose the toss and be sent in or
rather be in the field first, I reckon they would
have taken three two for seven it stumps on day one.
But as you say, I think this pitch is going

(15:11):
to turn a lot in the back end of this
Test match. So yeah, I'm quite interested to see. We've
got players who can play spin bowling pretty well. Daryl
Mitchell's always played it well, Tom Laith and one of
the best opening batsman against spin around the world. Conway
goes okay against it. So and let's not forget King Williamson.
So I think, you know, it'll be an interesting, interesting
Test match. I think it's a good first day for

(15:32):
New Zealand, don't you think.

Speaker 4 (15:33):
Yeah, well they let go the last session.

Speaker 3 (15:35):
There was an idea or they managed to come back
and strike with a couple, but they probably could have
impressed themselves a bit more.

Speaker 4 (15:40):
But it is at home, it is Sri Lanka. They
know what they're doing out there. And this guy come indomendous.

Speaker 3 (15:47):
What a record He's got what eleven bats, four centuries,
four half centuries and only a couple of failures and
he's only just turned up.

Speaker 4 (15:56):
You know what makes it even more amusing, Jason, take
a guess.

Speaker 2 (16:01):
He's got the same last name as the bloke who
was batting with yesterday.

Speaker 3 (16:04):
And another bloke who's batting with. He can bowl off
both arms. He's Amber Dextros.

Speaker 6 (16:09):
What.

Speaker 3 (16:09):
Yeah, there's a game where he changed arms halfway through
the over. So this guy is something to look out for,
and I think.

Speaker 4 (16:19):
We all will.

Speaker 3 (16:20):
But yeah, it's a balance enough game. Nice that rain
didn't destroy it for everybody. And I love the fact
that one of the commentators mistook Devin Conway for Cain Williamson.

Speaker 4 (16:30):
I don't know if we'll ever of that one down.

Speaker 2 (16:32):
All right, Just before we go sad news today, the
passing of our voice very familiar to to listeners to
news talks. He'd be and to radio sport in its
days and a guy I know you spoke a lot
to about football, as did I. Sam Malcolmson passing away
this morning dusk.

Speaker 3 (16:47):
Yeah, tremendous character, wonderful football of course in the Helcyon
days of that wonderful All White Side in an album
talking about then import from Scotland, but terrific to talk to.
I loved catching up with Sam Malcolmson and talking football. Wonderful,
rich voice, a huge knowledge base to pull from and

(17:07):
I think speak for you as well. He'll be sorely missed,
not only of course by friends and family, but the
whole football and sporting community. Veil Sam Malcolmson.

Speaker 2 (17:17):
Indeed, thoughts and best wishes with the family of Sam Malkinson,
who passed away this morning at the age of seventy seventy.
