Speaker 1 (00:09):
You're listening to a podcast from News Talks. Ed be
follow this and our wide range of podcast now on iHeartRadio.
This is Sportsfix Howard by News Talks.
Speaker 2 (00:20):
It'd be hello and welcome into a fresh episode of
the Sports Fix podcast for Thursday, September twenty six. As
we charged towards the end of another month. My name's
Jason Pine I'm Darcy.
Speaker 3 (00:31):
Walter Grave and I've been so lonely. Thanks for coming back, Piney.
Speaker 4 (00:35):
Great to have you on board again. It's good to
be here.
Speaker 2 (00:38):
There's an All Blacks test this coming weekend in my
city and Wellington very much looking forward to that.
Speaker 4 (00:42):
I've got some thoughts each Lee, and I know you
will as well.
Speaker 2 (00:45):
We've got to rugby guest on the pod today, well
Elliott Smith.
Speaker 3 (00:48):
He is our man of the hour Tower of Powell.
He's been calling All Blacks games for quite some time now.
Plainly he's been down there with Phalanxoft Media to listen
to Scott Robertson and was at the announcement of that
team which came in earlier today.
Speaker 2 (01:01):
I also want to get your thoughts, or not your thoughts.
I want to know what's going on with Liam Lawson.
You may know, you may not know. Don't tell me yet.
Let's wait till we get into the chamber and lean
on a leaner and you can tell me all about that.
Speaker 4 (01:12):
That's all to come. Let's get into it.
Speaker 2 (01:14):
In other news, let's start as always by checking in
on some of the big sports stories around today. Boden
Barrett's going to start at first five to the All
Blacks against Australia at Sky Stadium Saturday night. In the
second letter, Slowe Cup Test coach Scott Robertson says that
always planned to give Barrett a start at ten, having
had Damien McKinsey with a mortgage on that jersey.
Speaker 4 (01:35):
You have to start every game Cornell. He shows some
great form.
Speaker 3 (01:39):
And with great Crow's opportunities and we'll depth in our
team and it's nice chance to call it for boone
and pay outside PJA and they've got accommodation.
Speaker 4 (01:46):
They've paid a lot of games to.
Speaker 2 (01:47):
Do a payst fowler Will O'Rourke embracing his role as
a disruptor ahead of the second New Zealand's Rank A
Cricket Tea starting in gauld this afternoon.
Speaker 3 (01:55):
They've been after breaks, energy run and hard, try hit
the deck hard and unsettle the few people.
Speaker 4 (02:00):
So yeah, with short hard spars like.
Speaker 3 (02:02):
It is over here, it's zone and for four overs
and can't give it you a best.
Speaker 4 (02:06):
And Melvin Storm fallback.
Speaker 2 (02:07):
Ryan pappin how feeling and he's eded as match up
against Roosters fallback. James Tedesco in tomorrow night's NRL preliminary
final in Melbourne.
Speaker 5 (02:15):
I just could keep pair performances, but in terms of
coming up against each other, we don't really have to
physically bash each.
Speaker 1 (02:21):
Other any of art.
Speaker 5 (02:22):
It's probably just more the performance face. You know, he's
been that guy, has been in the spotlight a few
times and there you sort of hope to be in
that position Monday and you test yourself against him.
Speaker 6 (02:30):
Use and a Villian. It's Sports Fix with Jason Vine
and Dussy Law degree.
Speaker 2 (02:36):
Team naming Thursday, and very little really in the way
of changes for the All Blacks as they wrap the
Rugby Championship against Australia Saturday night at Sky Stadium. With
the Bledislow Cups secure and the Rugby Championship itself out
of reach, I really thought Razor might tinker a little
bit more instead, The starting forward pack is completely unchanged.
(02:57):
There's an injury in force change at second five with
Antony Lennart Brown and for Jordy Barrett, and just two
form or technical decisions with t J. Pettanatta and Quartier
to my swapping places and Boden Barrett to start at
ten in place of Damien mackenzie. I feel like the
two half back roles are interchangeable in many respects depending
on who starts who comes off the bench. I don't
(03:19):
think that's a really big change first five is though
Damien McKenzie has started the first eight Test matches of
the year. This is a definite change of approach and
proof that the starting first five position is still very
much a live discussion. We'll find out more, obviously when
we look at the starting lineups for the Northern Tour.
(03:39):
Who will start at first five Not so much the
Japan Test, but certainly the games against England, Ireland and
France to follow.
Speaker 4 (03:47):
A few tweaks on the bench.
Speaker 2 (03:48):
Great to see Patrick Tweep a lot to back, having
not played since the second England Test on the thirteenth
of July. He's overcome that carf injury and will feature
on Saturday, but having not featured since his excellent debut
against fig I would love to have seen Billy proc
to get another crack, but he probably to be fair
suffered because of Jordi Barrett's injury, meaning that David Harveli
(04:11):
has been preferred on the bench because he covers second
five perhaps more capably than Billy procted us. Proctor will
certainly surely start at center against Japan in the next
Test match, and I reckon we'll put real pressure on
Rico Yuwani for that thirteen Jersey on the Northern Tour.
So it's steady as she goes for Razor, who's been
(04:32):
conservative rather than cavalier with his selections this year.
Speaker 6 (04:38):
Dissecting the sporting agenda, it's Force Fix with Jason Vine
and Darcy Waldegrave.
Speaker 3 (04:44):
We'll join now in the Fixed podcast by Elliott Smith,
our man and the mic for Rugby inter Nasty locally
as well as in Wellington. He was at the press conference. Elliott,
Welcome to the podcast. It was forecast that Bowden Barrett
was going to take the number ten jumper and that
was correct.
Speaker 7 (05:01):
Yeah, absolutely, it was Jim Heckey, Yes, fullcast, absolutely right
from the media that Boden Barrett will start at ten
and Scott Robertson basically saying that they were always planning
to give him a go at some point in this
campaign in the first block of tests. While they're up
to test number nine now and I guess before they
go on the end of year two, they quite like
to have it look at him at first five. I
(05:22):
think they probably would have liked to do it a
week bit earlier on, but they just didn't have the
rope in order to change things around. So remembering that
Will Jordan wasn't there for a long part of the season,
Stephen Petfeeder got injured so they couldn't maneuver things into place,
and also the results weren't and performances weren't quite what
they wanted them to be. So it's now never really
in terms of giving Boden barr to go before they
(05:44):
hit on end of year two. He hasn't started there
for the All Black since Edinburgh against Scotland in twenty
twenty two, so it has been a wee while for
Boden Barrett, but he gets his opportunity this week in
a chance to impress and just show Scott Robertson and
code what he can do in the ten jersey. He's
made no bones about it. He wants to play first five.
(06:05):
He's been stuck on the beach or at fifteen he
gets a chance in his preferred position to show the
selectors what he's capable of.
Speaker 3 (06:13):
Not a slap in the face for Damian McKenzie. More, Hey,
we need to see this, although a lot of people
would see it as being a bit of a bump
because McKenzie we use the word mercurial, don't we as yet,
in my opinion, shown any advancement of his cause when
it comes to game management, even though he's had that
jersey for eight consecutive tests.
Speaker 4 (06:33):
We're not seeing enough.
Speaker 3 (06:35):
Is that fair?
Speaker 7 (06:36):
That is fair, Darcy and I think you look at
it and it's the way that this has come about.
And in Scott Robinson was it pains to point out
that they've been happy with Damie McKenzie in his form
by and large this year. Obviously things to work on,
but he's at pains to point out it wasn't about
dropping McKenzie. It does you know it was always going
to look like that when your last home game of
the season and he started eight straight tests, you decide
(06:59):
to change things up, but he was at pains to
point out that they were planning to do it at
some point in the season. But as you said, Darcy,
Damien McKenzie has had eight tests to show what he's
capable of. And you look through the All Blacks have
certainly won test matches, But is there a signature Damien
McKenzie performance in there where he's rarely taking charge of
the team and steered them around the park and been
(07:20):
instrumental in a win. Probably not so. I think a
few of the All Blacks it is time to try
things a little bit different. You've got Damian McKenzie who
you can go back to for the end of the
year tour, but they're eager to show it's not a
closed shop at ten either, So they're having I guess
a wee bit each way when it comes to these selections.
But when you've started a bloke for eight tests in
a row and then decide to change things up for
(07:42):
the ninth test and findal one of the year, it
is always going to look a little bit like you
want to make a change in that position.
Speaker 3 (07:48):
Ellie Smith joining us other tweaks they're all on the
back line. The pack stays the same. That's got to
be reassuring for those men. Number one, true tool eight
in the back line. A couple of other twists TJ
Petty and Aara in the nine Jersey Is this more
of a sentimental selection that sounds terrible saying that alb
engilent A Brown has come in plenty for Jordy Barrett.
(08:11):
So that's the changes at nine, at ten and at twelve.
Speaker 7 (08:15):
It is lotot, TJ. Petinaro, Scott Robinson saying he's playing
some good rugby at the moment. So I think he
did come off the bench and Sydney made a couple
of big defensive moments, defensive reads and was immense there.
Courtezra is in electric form at the moment, so it's
about which way you move. I guess those two pieces
around of the team. I don't think there was too
much sentiment in there, but I guess you look at
(08:37):
it and go to his last test on home soil,
and you know, maybe that was at the back of
the selector's minds and it's in Wellington.
Speaker 3 (08:44):
It's in Welly mate in front of his fans.
Speaker 7 (08:46):
Right, but you go yeah, I think. At the same time, though,
there is no room for sentiment in All Black jusey,
you've got to pack who's best for the occasion.
Speaker 3 (08:54):
Question here Alliot Smith, and as always, thanks for sharing
your time and your expertise with us. Can they score
in the last twenty minutes?
Speaker 4 (09:01):
I might just come down to that.
Speaker 3 (09:03):
That's what everybody's looking at right now.
Speaker 7 (09:05):
It'd be nice, it'd be good to, you know, to
see the All Blacks clicking that last twenty and look,
it's just a mystery as to why they can't do it.
The cards aren't helping. They need to get that out
of their game. The discipline wise has deteriorated as.
Speaker 5 (09:21):
Games have gone on.
Speaker 7 (09:22):
They've conceded more penalties in the second half and become
more error riddled in their performances. So it's now something
gets hanging over them. It's like the Curse of Wellington.
It's it's something that gets talked about more and more
and more. It's a sort of self fulfilling prophecy. The
more that it gets talked about, the more they can't
seem to break it. So this weekend they've got to
find a way to the trial. On how I'll even
(09:44):
take a penalty goal in the last twenty minutes if
that's all it takes, or a drop goal. Just find
some way to get the scoreboard moving in the last
twenty you know, Boden Barrett, let's snap a drop goal
in the sixty first minute to get that scoreboard moving
on something.
Speaker 4 (09:58):
Please this weekend, the chamber is now in session on
sports Fax.
Speaker 2 (10:05):
Time for us to get into the chamber, to lean on,
a leaner to the fact, to have a chat about
sporting issues that are relevant to us and hopefully to
you as well. And All Blacks team was named this morning. Dash,
you've heard some of my thoughts on that team. What
were your main takeaways that we use that phrase? What
were your main main things that you took from the
naming of this fifteen and the twenty three for Saturday.
Speaker 3 (10:26):
Sounds odd because all of the conversation has been around
Bowden Barrett taking the ten role of Damian McKenzie's slipping
back to the reserve's bench. But for me, it's all
about the pack not changing one through eight. The same
men who provided last week are given another crack yess
off the bench. There's a tweak there, but the fact
that we've got these guys, says a lot about the
(10:49):
faith that Scott Robinson has in them. And I suppose
you look to Wallace Setiti, coming to that six jumper
who's shown that he can play and they want more
from him. I suppose for from a defensive point of view,
being in the right position to affect the right tackle
at the time. And I suppose it says a lot
as well about we're Papali actually is in the lineup
(11:11):
so far. We know about Blackadder because he's not quite
one hundred percent now. But for me, that pack one
through eight that's settled, that says a lot. In VIIs Australia,
I'll be just a tad freaked out.
Speaker 4 (11:22):
Well Dotton Papali.
Speaker 2 (11:23):
He hasn't played for the All Blacks since the second
Test against Argentina in Auckland. He didn't play at all
in South Africa. It wasn't part of the match day
twenty three for either of the Test matches over There
wasn't in the twenty three in Sydney last weekend, not
again inside the twenty three for this game against the
Wallabies in Wellington. It's been Luke Jacobson the last two
(11:44):
and this one some of Penny Female got the loose
Ford cover nod in Johannesburg. What is Dotton Papale's role
to play in the All Blacks moving forward? Does he
just have to wait for Sam Kane to go away
and then have a crack at the seven Jersey next year?
Speaker 3 (11:58):
That may well be, but we know that he can
cover all of the loose forward positions and it is
important to have those characters. What I like about this
providing it turns out in this manner when you get
a young player and he is still relatively young, even
though he's had leadership experience, When you push him into
a corner and you don't select him and he doesn't
(12:18):
play for a while, how he bounces back for that?
What is mental strength is like? What his attitude is
like within the camp and how he actually plays when
he comes back. Now, that says so much about the
fortitude and the character of an individual and that party,
I'm sure we agree is a very important part of
being an All Black.
Speaker 2 (12:39):
Indeed, do you think this is in some ways a
sentimental selection? I look at Sam Kaine, although he has
started the last three test matches, he starts in his
one hundredth TJ. Petinata, who hasn't started the last two
test matches, will start this one and what will be
his farewell test on home soil?
Speaker 4 (12:54):
Any sentiments you think in.
Speaker 3 (12:56):
The selection from Razor well as Elliott told us, because
I have thought the same kind of thing, maybe possibly
and well into It's like, no, he's actually been playing
really well, he's looked the business, has come off the
bench particularly well and again rotating Courtez what can you
do off the bench? And when Cortez comes on with
Damien mckinns, that's another combination. So I don't think I
(13:18):
did suggest it, but basically got told off Bailliot Smith
And I'm not going to wake you with him Bindy.
Speaker 2 (13:23):
No, no, I think that's probably wise. Hey, I just
wanted to ask you about Liam Lawson.
Speaker 3 (13:28):
Oh no, not let still. This has been going on
for months. This is worse than days of our lives.
This is shortened street on wheels, mate.
Speaker 2 (13:35):
So what is going on? When are we going to
get some sort of clarity? I saw Daniel Ricardo's flying
back to Australia now, so are we just waiting for
Liam Lawson to be handed a seat in this team?
Speaker 4 (13:47):
What's going on. Yes we are, and the waiting game continues.
Speaker 3 (13:51):
And if you look at red Ball and what's happened
to read Ball over the last couple of months, it
has been poor. And that's putting it nicely. I almost
think Liam Lawson probably doesn't want to be involved with
red Ball. Half of their staff have left and gone
over to other teams such as McLaren and Audi. There
seems to be a no structure internally. We've got Helmet
(14:12):
Marco constantly arguing with Christian Horner who's got himself into
a bit of hot water as well. We've got Max
verst step and threatened to leave over the f BOMD
that he dropped. Now that the word is that, Checko says,
you know, Perry's might be unhappy. So there's a lot
of chaos. Does he really want to start his full
time Formula one career? And that was he just go
(14:32):
you know what, I'm going to go to howdi you lot?
He will, as I believe, but I've been saying this
for a couple of weeks.
Speaker 4 (14:37):
It will possibly.
Speaker 3 (14:39):
Over what we don't know confirm that he will have
that drive. But I tell you what, this has been
so disappointing, not only for Liam Lawson but for Daniel
Ricardo as well. No one's winning out of this.
Speaker 2 (14:52):
So Liam Lawson will drive Formula one in twenty twenty five.
Speaker 3 (14:56):
We'd think so, but stranger things have happened.
Speaker 4 (14:59):
You would think so because we.
Speaker 3 (15:01):
Know, well you look at the look on Riccardo's face
after that last race. The guy is Gomberger. That said
he's not around anymore. So some on slides in.
Speaker 2 (15:09):
So if you put two and two together you should
get four, but if you put two and two Formula
one you get twenty two. So I just sit back
and wait for the entertainment to carry on.
Speaker 4 (15:19):
Where's my popcorn?
Speaker 2 (15:20):
Well, indeed, let where's my claarenity is what I'm asking.
We'll watch the space as the plot thickens.
Speaker 4 (15:26):
