Speaker 3 (00:21):
Hello and welcome to a new week and to a
fresh Monday episode of the Sports Fix podcast for October fourteen.
Speaker 2 (00:28):
I'm Jason Pine. Good to have you listening in Today
on Sports Fix.
Speaker 3 (00:32):
We'll look ahead to tomorrow morning's crucial T twenty Cricket
World Cup match between our White firms in Pakistan.
Speaker 2 (00:39):
It is a pretty simple equation.
Speaker 3 (00:40):
If the White Firms win, they are into the semi
finals of the T twenty Cricket World Cup.
Speaker 2 (00:45):
What are their chances? Cricket commentator and.
Speaker 3 (00:48):
Coach of the Otago Sparks women side Craig Come, I'm
going to join us on that. Elijah Feu drops into
the chamber to kick around.
Speaker 2 (00:55):
Some of the big sporting issues of the day.
Speaker 3 (00:56):
And what on earth happened in that post race interview
at the America's Cup overnight with Sir Ben Ainslie and
Stephen mckiver having a bit of a set to a
bit of a teasty exchange.
Speaker 2 (01:10):
Will unpack that as well. Let's get into it in
other news. Checking things off with a.
Speaker 3 (01:17):
Look at some of the biggest sports stories floating around today.
Sabun Ainsley's taken umbradge with the host broadcaster after his
in the ospre Tania team went three neeled down to
Team New Zealand and the America's Cup match over.
Speaker 2 (01:28):
I still believe it.
Speaker 1 (01:29):
You're as close when it comes to performance because they
get that.
Speaker 2 (01:32):
Feeling coming off your boat.
Speaker 4 (01:34):
Maybe that's the key we commentate you and your mate.
Speaker 3 (01:38):
I'll take that one on the chin and thanks buddy.
Black Caps coach Gary Stead believes Tim Southey's resignation as
Test captain has opened up his selection options ahead of
their three Test series against India starting on Wednesday.
Speaker 4 (01:51):
I think it allows perhaps different players to be considered
in roles and stuff as well. And as a selector
and as coach, you're always trying to put what you
think is the very best team out there.
Speaker 3 (02:02):
And Kenya's Ruth Chepngedtitch has set a new women's marathon
world record time of two hours, nine minutes and fifty
six seconds in Chicago.
Speaker 5 (02:11):
I am make proud of for myself and I doan wod.
It is my dream that has come to rule us an.
Speaker 1 (02:18):
Avidian Kids Sports Fix with Jason Hind.
Speaker 3 (02:23):
Plenty of chedder around today about the testy exchange between
any Ospretania skippers have Been Ainsley and New zeal And
yodding commentator Stephen mckiva after the third America's Cup race.
Speaker 2 (02:33):
This morning.
Speaker 3 (02:34):
We played the audio for you as part of our
segment on the Big Sports.
Speaker 2 (02:37):
Stories of the Day. We beeped out the end.
Speaker 3 (02:40):
Of it, but basically Sir Ben Ainsley was overheard calling
Stephen mckiva and fing w off camera after they'd finished
that post race interview. I actually think this is all
down to a bit of a misunderstanding. I actually think
Sir Been Ainsley has misheard what Stephen mckiva says.
Speaker 2 (02:58):
Have a quick listen still believing that you're you're.
Speaker 1 (03:01):
As close when it comes to performance because I get
that feeling coming off your boat.
Speaker 2 (03:05):
Maybe that's a key we commentate you and your mate.
Speaker 3 (03:08):
So Stephen mcciva says, are you still in this because
that's the feeling I get coming off your boat. I
think Sir ban Ainsley thinks he says that's not the
feeling I get coming off your boat. Otherwise why would
he react in the way that he did. He does
have a bit of a history of losing his temper
and competition to been Angeley. He was once disqualified from
(03:29):
a World Dinghy Championship for boarding a media boat and
threatening a photographer. Now, whether this is his anger boiling
over at a perceived slight by Stephen Macival, or whether
he was just annoyed because his team is still sitting
on zero after three races, it's not very dignified and
perhaps just a wee insight into the pressure that he
is under having poured tens of millions of dollars into
(03:52):
this campaign. The Britannia Syndicate now has to win seven
of the next ten races to win the America's Cup.
Speaker 2 (03:59):
And while those of us who.
Speaker 3 (04:01):
Remember twenty thirteen in San Francisco all too well and
we'd never dare suggest this is a face complea team
New Zealand seems to have the boat, the design package
and most importantly the sailors to complete the job this time,
possibly as soon as Saturday morning. I wonder what Sir
Ben will say in the post race interview. Then this
(04:24):
is the Sports Fixed podcast. The White Ferns have passage
to the semifinals of the T twenty Cricket World Cup
in their own hands. With Australia beating India by nine
runs this morning, New Zealand just need to beat Pakistan
and their final group fixture tomorrow morning to go through
to the semifinals alongside Australia from Group A. Otago Sparks
cricket coach and the cricket commentator Craig Coming joins us
(04:47):
on the podcast. Craig, before we look specifically at Pakistan,
what have you made of New Zealand's performances in general
so far at.
Speaker 2 (04:54):
This Cricket World Cup?
Speaker 4 (04:56):
Oh?
Speaker 6 (04:56):
Very good? Well, I mean, you know, Piney, I think
a lot of people probably didn't give them a chance.
And when they beat India in that first game, it
with a really good performance. That's what they needed to
do first and foremost was always going to be U
against Australia. But when you're one on one against those two,
as you've just mentioned, it's now in their hands. And
you know, I watched the ending of the game this
(05:17):
morning with the Australia and you know, good, good on
Australia for actually doing as a favor. So how we
played well against Sri Lanka. We did exactly what we
needed to do. So you know, Pakistan they're a tough team,
they're a good team. They beat us back here in
New Zealand before Christmas. But I just think Pine there
is a little bit more confidence in this group. You know,
(05:38):
being away beating India was great from Marau and and
you know now they'll they'll really back themselves and as
long as they turn up and play with freedom, I
think they've got a really good chance.
Speaker 3 (05:47):
Wellington's Georgia Plumber is opening the batting, that's been been
the case for a little while now and starting to
bear a bit of fruit. Fifty in the last game
against Sri Lanka. She's striking at one hundred and twenty
three as well. Only Sophie Devine striking at you at
a higher rate than that. Can you see an obvious
plan from Georgia Plumber opening the.
Speaker 6 (06:05):
Batting's not so much a plan, Piny, I just see
more confidence. You know, she's had a really tough run,
really harder than eighteen year old nineteen year old to
find your feet at the international game. And I dare
say if New Zealand cricket maybe had their time again
They may have said it was a weevid early, but
what's happening now is Georgia, Well, one thing she does
really well in some ways it nearly costs her Piney,
(06:27):
but also when she's playing over, especially in charge, she's
looking to hit down the ground. So Georgia always looks
to hit straight, sometimes to her detriment because pictures that
bounce a bit more like maybe the basin or Hagley
Eden Park. You know, it's tough to get on top
of the bounce, but over there it's a great way
to play. She's looking to hit down the ground. The
(06:47):
ball doesn't stand up as much and you're using the
full face of the bat, so I think, you know,
the conditions are suiting it. And then yeah, just don't
underestimate Piney to forget confident. Look like that score in
Australia when she got fifty in that the last game
before they went over. That just just made it. But
probably believe in herself. She works exceptionally hard. She's she's
a wonderful young lady. So now she's walking out and
(07:09):
actually probably not worried am I going to fail? She's thinking, right,
how can I contribute? And that's exactly what we want.
And you know what it's doing is it's allowing them
to get off the good starts and then it allows
Sophie to come in and we're we're nearly on the
front foot, which we saw against India and we saw
Sophie finish the game off the other night.
Speaker 3 (07:25):
Yeah, and just on she's opened the banning what did
for a long time past part of six years up
until sort of eighteen months ago dropping down to four.
Speaker 2 (07:33):
Are you a fan of that?
Speaker 6 (07:36):
I think as a cricketer, especially in T twenty to
high eposits, Well, the great thing about opening pointing you're
none for nonal done. You normally know who the opening
bowls are going to be, so it helps with your preparation.
The ball's going to come onto the bat better, but
it will later because it's a new balls. I just think,
you know, from a cricketing point of view, at T
twenty it's so much easier at the top of the
(07:58):
order because of those factors. If you're betting four or five,
you could either be you know, ten for two or
five overs. You you could be eighty for two off
ten and you feel the pressure. I've got to keep
this going I've got to keep this momentum going, so
you set the tide. I mean walking out with Susie
will be nice and calm between the two of them.
So yep. I think it's suiting Georgia, especially in the
T twenty format, and it just because the freedom to
(08:19):
go out and just play and even if you get
fifteen or eight balls, you've got us off to a start.
And so I'm sure she's enjoying that freedom. You know,
one day cricket's very different and you know, probably the
mid of order. But at the moment she's made every
post to winner since been given that opportunity from Australia
to now, which is great.
Speaker 2 (08:36):
Absolutely with the ball.
Speaker 3 (08:38):
We saw Lee casperick for the first time at the
tournament in the last game against Rolanka two for twenty
seven off her four over. She's been used pretty sparingly
in recent times by New Zealand. Do you think she'll
be retained though for the Pakistan game and both spit
alongside Menica and Eden Carson.
Speaker 6 (08:55):
Yeah, I don't know. I mean again, I don't know
whether you know friend Jonas was not picked or whether
there was an injury. I know she wasn't available for
the first game, I think because she's pit the webbing
in their hands. So I don't know whether that was
a technical play if it was good work, and it
will depend on the conditions. The good thing is, Poney,
when you're picking a side, if you've got options, and
(09:15):
you know, if you're picking players that suit against opposition
and have had success against opposition, that's exactly what you want.
The good thing is for in New Zealand at the moment,
they've got Medicure who's been bowling beautifully, and Eden Carson's
found the form that you know, probably I've been biased,
I've been waiting for it, but she's been given opportunities
to play and again throw Eden into that confidence mix.
(09:36):
But what I like about Eden, she's bowling a lot slower.
She went through a phase where she was bowling pretty
flat and fast, and even friend was. But Paul Wiseman's
over there working with him. And you know, spinners have
got two ways to deceive bad as. It's with turn
and it's with flight, Poney, and you know that you know,
looks like they're doing it, you know, doing it well,
and they're going to have to do it well. But
you know, you just you just see more confidence in
(09:57):
this group and that's exactly what you need, is a
cricket so or any sporting side.
Speaker 2 (10:00):
Thanks Craig.
Speaker 3 (10:01):
That's Craig coming Otago Sparks coach and cricket commentator. The
White Fans up against Pakistan three o'clock tomorrow morning news.
Long time win and they are in to the T
twenty Cricket World Cup semi Finals.
Speaker 2 (10:13):
The Chamber is now in session on sports Fix on
the Sports Fix Podcast.
Speaker 3 (10:19):
A bunch of issues to kick around and no better
man to do it with on a Monday than Elijah
who drops into the People's Chamber.
Speaker 2 (10:26):
How is your weekend, mate? Yeah?
Speaker 5 (10:28):
Good? Thank you, Piney.
Speaker 7 (10:29):
A lot to cover in sports, so yeah, I'm ready
to get stuck in.
Speaker 3 (10:33):
As always, another big week coming at the back end
of the week. The NPC semis will get to those
in the moment. But on Wednesday, Black Caps the India
three Test Series. Day one of the first tests is
on Wednesday. How confident should we feel? How confident do
you feel about our chances in this three Test series?
Speaker 7 (10:53):
I guess if there's any sign of confidence is that
you know we have a new test skip in Tom
Latham and hopefully that's a sign or a possible new
direction that you can take us in.
Speaker 5 (11:02):
But overall I'm not as confident.
Speaker 7 (11:04):
I mean, our record in India's not too flash. We've
only won two out of thirty six Test matches all time,
and I believe the last time was.
Speaker 5 (11:12):
Thirty six years ago.
Speaker 7 (11:13):
So I mean taking that into accounts, and I guess
when you look at how we played in Sri Lanka
in the subcontinent, I don't have much confidence for this
black Cap squad.
Speaker 2 (11:22):
Yeah, I feel the same.
Speaker 3 (11:23):
I feel like we should be pessimistic rather than optimistic.
I don't know whether I would say I feel trepidation.
I wouldn't certainly be be backing us to win India
or a good team, particularly in their own conditions. I
just hope we get a bounce, you know, a bounce
from a new skipper, you know, perhaps a couple of
changes in the eleven. I would like to see Matt
Henry come into the side. I think he deserves to
(11:45):
be given another go, given the fact that he was
our best bowler by miles in the home summer.
Speaker 2 (11:50):
Yeah, I don't know.
Speaker 3 (11:51):
I feel like I don't feel like we're going to
win the series Elijah, But I just want to see
some sort of bounce, you know.
Speaker 2 (11:57):
Do you think we might see that?
Speaker 5 (11:59):
Yeah?
Speaker 7 (12:00):
I think even if we come away with one win
in the three games, that's some sort of success and
that's a positive I feel Tom Latham. But as you
point out, the big decision will be does he go
with Salvi or Matt Henry? And I think whichever direction
he decides to go could be a sign of where
this team is possibly possibly going.
Speaker 5 (12:18):
Do you go into sort of a new direction?
Speaker 7 (12:20):
Do you rely on Salvie to recapture his form and
hope that the weights of Captain c you know, doesn't
have too much of it didn't have too much of
an effect on him, So now that the weights off
his shoulders, he can play well again.
Speaker 5 (12:34):
So yeah, that's a big decision for Tom Latham.
Speaker 3 (12:36):
I honestly don't I just can't see Southy playing Elijah.
I can't see how he could. And un least they
go with three seam bowlers, which is unlikely in India.
Speaker 2 (12:47):
I think it's got to be Willow Rauk and Matt Henry.
Speaker 3 (12:49):
You know, I'm actually a little bit surprised him south
He's even on this trip.
Speaker 2 (12:53):
I wonder whether it would have been better to get
him out.
Speaker 3 (12:55):
Of the limelight altogether, out of the spotlight and just
say hey, refresh a bit and get ready for the
home summer where you will definitely play against England in
those three Test matches on Seema Freenby pictures back here.
Speaker 2 (13:06):
I just I don't know.
Speaker 3 (13:07):
It just seems very unlike to me that he's going
to play any of the three Test matches over there.
Speaker 5 (13:11):
Yeah, I do agree with you.
Speaker 7 (13:13):
I think when he did stand down from the captain
c it felt like at that same time he probably
could have stepped aside from the Test squad at that
exact moment. But because he's still in the squad, there's
still we're still asking the question of whether he's going
to play or not. So yeah, I will lean towards you, Piney,
and that Matt Henry is probably the answer there.
Speaker 3 (13:34):
All right, we'll find that out on Wednesday at a
round about sort of four thirty five o'clock when the
first ball is due to be bold.
Speaker 2 (13:41):
Let's get to the NPC semi final.
Speaker 3 (13:43):
Some cracking quarterfinals over the weekend, especially on Saturday, with
Bay of Plenty beating Hawks Bay nineteen seventeen, whitekatof getting
up over Talllanaki fifteen fourteen. Then yesterday Canterbury what an
absolute blowout over Tasman sixty two fourteen. You reckon the
Red and Blacks can go to Totong and beat Bay
of Plenty in a semi up there.
Speaker 5 (14:04):
I think the Red and Blacks are back pineers.
Speaker 7 (14:06):
I'm not too I'm not too pleased without saying that
as an Aucklander, but like the way they played yesterday, Canterbury,
you know, a record scoreline against Hasman's. Hasman was the
most points they've ever conceded. It was the largest margin
of defeat for the Muckel But Canterbury did look good
and you know these teams are probably not going to
(14:26):
be with the All Blacks, but even without the All Blacks,
Canterbury on paper do you have a good squad And
these SEMs to be finding their feet at the right time,
so I wouldn't be surprised if they went up to
Totong and beat Bay of Tensey.
Speaker 2 (14:38):
Yeah, I agree.
Speaker 3 (14:39):
I'm just looking at their team yesterday and I'm not
sure why we ever doubted them. You know, Billy Harmon's
been playing brilliantly Tom Christy and Corey Callo.
Speaker 2 (14:47):
That's the loose trio.
Speaker 3 (14:48):
Mitch Straman who's been around the block many times, poor
here being at first five, Dallas, mcleodden and Brighten in
or in midfield you know up front, you know George
Bells there, Fletcher Newell.
Speaker 2 (14:57):
I guess they'll go with the all blacks.
Speaker 3 (14:58):
But even so, Yeah, it was a very good Canterbury
performance and I tend to agree, I think it'll be
you know much this has been much to the displeasure
of a couple of our colleagues, so a big demers fans.
I think it'll be Canterbury who bay plenty? What about Wellington?
Waitcutto surely my Wellington boys win that?
Speaker 7 (15:15):
Yeah, I think for similar reasons as the Canbury in
terms of their squad on paper, I do think Wellington
can get the win at home and guys like Ridley Higans,
who I think is been a standout of this season.
Duple to see Crief, he's coming back at the right
time from injury. And then Peter Lacky. We know how
awesome he is as a loose forward. And I guess
for Wellington they sort of they've also rediscovered their format
(15:37):
the right time. They had that mini dip where they
lost the counties and they lost to Tasman and the
ran for this Shield challenge and they just got past
Bay off Pency. But now it seems like they're slowly
starting to find their form again at the right time.
That's what finals footy is all about. It's about peaking
at the right time. So I do think Wellington can
get the win there.
Speaker 3 (15:54):
Yeah, I think we're headed for a Wellington Canterbury m
PC final. But of course skipping the season with just
had it could just as easily be Bay of Plenty
against White Kattow or something completely different. Just before you go, tonight,
international football means football returns to New Zealand for the
first time in a wee.
Speaker 2 (16:09):
While all White to be Malaysia at.
Speaker 3 (16:12):
Albany and a friendly. What are you hoping to see
from Darren Baiseley's men tonight?
Speaker 7 (16:17):
I mean would would be a good starts against a
team like Malaysia. We're outside the Oceania qualifying windows, so
it's a chance for Baisley and the squad to assess
themselves and see how they measure up against competition outside
of the Oceania region. I don't know too much about Malaysia,
although I did read that they have a player named Indric,
to which I found out is not the one that
(16:38):
plays at Real Madrid and is the Brazilian.
Speaker 5 (16:40):
So I am excited.
Speaker 7 (16:41):
I mean, we could tell people that on the Monday,
chilly Monday nights, Indrick played at North Harbor Stadium.
Speaker 5 (16:47):
So how about that. I'm looking forward to that.
Speaker 2 (16:49):
I don't mind it at all.
Speaker 3 (16:50):
One thing I want to see tonight, I want to
see Alex Paulson get a game and goal. You know,
he's Max Crokam has rightly been the goalkeeper in the
last little while for Darren Baiseley. But I'd love to
see Alex Paulson ahead of his debut highly controversial for
Auckland the FC this coming weekend in the A leagues.
I'd like to see him get a game tonight. I
haven't seen the team, don't know what the situation is,
but I'm hoping to see Alex Paulson between the sticks tonight.
(17:13):
Great to chat sport with you in the chamber. As always, Elijah,
let's do it again next Monday.
Speaker 5 (17:18):
We'll do things Pony.
