Howard by News Talk said.
Speaker 4 (00:20):
Be hello there, and welcome into the final Sports Fix
podcast for October twenty twenty fourth or thirty first.
Speaker 3 (00:27):
Today.
Speaker 4 (00:28):
Halloween. To those who are Happy Halloween, to those who celebrate,
I'm Jason Pine.
Speaker 3 (00:32):
What's to celebrate? Oh? I'm so miserable. You eat all
the candy you want, Scared of Jesus out here, neighbor,
it doesn't bother me. And as slight as I'm Darcy,
we're all the grave. I am the grinch who stole Halloween.
You wait till I start on.
Speaker 4 (00:43):
Guy Fawkes pining, all right, well we'll get to the
fifth of November. When we get to the fifth of November.
Speaker 3 (00:48):
It's okay. What's coming up on the pot today? Who
are yunning to away? A guy called AJS Betell, he
may remember him. He cleared out the entire Indian batting
lineup one inning's got the ten wickets at Wanhiti, which
of course is where they are playing it tomorrow. And
he basically was a support role when the unusual occurrence
of Mitch Santner chalk. The sant n Claus ran straight
(01:10):
through India like a dose of the Trots. I shouldn't
have said that, I did it anyway, and I think
that what he is going to bring to this game,
not only in that support role, but it maybe wanted up.
The antiweave at Morris is huge because of course that
the Test is on its way. So Ajes Bettel joins
us shortly.
Speaker 4 (01:29):
All right, looking forward to that, we'll chat about the
Warrior's newest recruit. I got some thoughts on the New
Zealand Professional Football derby.
Speaker 3 (01:37):
You can't help yourself, Cardie. I don't believe.
Speaker 4 (01:40):
It's more to do though with what you do. If
you feel like you might have divided loyalties. I have
some advice for you in that regard. Let's get into it.
In other news, let's keep going with some of the
big sports stories floating around today. Silver Fern shutter Grace
Wecki is refusing to believe overseas player eligibility criteria will
(02:05):
rule her out of selection contention next year when she
joined New South Wales.
Speaker 3 (02:09):
I don't know how it'll come together or what will
change in terms of the A and the premiership and
exemption rule.
Speaker 1 (02:14):
But I love this team.
Speaker 5 (02:15):
I love what we've been able to build. I'm really
part of the theif.
Speaker 1 (02:18):
I've had that tour and I really.
Speaker 5 (02:20):
Want to continue that.
Speaker 4 (02:21):
The black Caps history making test series in India has
allowed Cain Williamson more time to get fit for the
England Test series here at home next month. He's coach
Gary Stead at a push.
Speaker 2 (02:31):
We could have got him over here immediately, but considering
the travel factor and making sure that you can actually
recover properly when you get here as well, we didn't
feel though that was worth the risks.
Speaker 1 (02:40):
So happy with.
Speaker 2 (02:41):
Having him ready and very confidently be right for that
first Test versus.
Speaker 4 (02:45):
England and to the battle for quarterfinal spots in English
Football's League Cup. Spurs have knocked over Premier League leaders
Manchester City two one.
Speaker 3 (02:52):
Chum heartsquare a throat range Coster cop has a victory
over Pat Pardiola to save it.
Speaker 1 (02:59):
Medio Vix, We've got just the ticket. It's Sports Fix
powered by News Talks Isy.
Speaker 3 (03:06):
We joined it now on the program by Ajas Patel
as we look at the prospects of wiping the floor
with India, but that's not really the way you're thinking
is an Ajas. It's just another day in another test. Mates,
tell me you're not over over complicating this and welcome No.
Speaker 5 (03:24):
One hundred.
Speaker 2 (03:25):
I mean, it's it's really you know, we know it's
going to be a challenge again, and we know how
good India are at home, so it's always going to
be tough and they're always going to be coming out firing.
So yeah, it's about kind of continuing to do the
good stuff that we did and building on this stuff
that probably wasn't so great.
Speaker 3 (03:42):
So what wasn't so great? I mean you started it,
of course I'm going to finish it. What wasn't so great?
Speaker 5 (03:47):
I think?
Speaker 2 (03:48):
I mean for me personally especially, I think, you know,
continuing to build on that consistency with the ball and
stuff like that.
Speaker 5 (03:54):
And I think a bit of luck goes a long
way in this game as well.
Speaker 2 (03:59):
But I think we've you know, shown some real character
with I guess our batting aspect as well, and batting
in tough conditions in India. Our beat is come out
fig and shots and played some you know, top knocks,
and it's really about continuing to do that and continuing
to have that mindset of you know, being aggressive and
being positive and putting you know, some some runs on
(04:20):
the board, and that's I suppose a positive but it's
also then kind of capitalizing on those moments as well
and turning those partnerships into into big ones.
Speaker 5 (04:30):
Wow, and yeah, got just.
Speaker 3 (04:33):
Out of your your thirty sixth birthday and you're kind
of playing a home game in Mumbai. Does that still
carry a lot of weight for you?
Speaker 5 (04:42):
Yeah, one hundred percent. I mean, I love Mumbai.
Speaker 2 (04:45):
I mean it's it's definitely a second home for me,
and I spend a lot of time in Mumbai, so
it's always quite special being back here.
Speaker 5 (04:52):
But to have the opportunity to play here.
Speaker 2 (04:54):
More is quite exciting, and obviously there'll be probably a
little bit more pressure, I guess coming back last time
it was kind of, you know, just exciting to be
in Mumbai and playing Mumbai.
Speaker 5 (05:05):
But I guess this time around there will.
Speaker 2 (05:07):
Probably be a little bit I added pressure for certain reasons.
But yeah, no, it's always cool to be in Mumbai
and play Mumbai.
Speaker 5 (05:14):
But it's certainly quite hot at the moment.
Speaker 3 (05:16):
I'd expect that completely understandable. And when you go back
there because I had an Indian resident call me a
couple of weeks ago on air and we're talking about
why it's so hard to actually beat India in their
own backyard, and he goes, mat, I'm an Indian, but
I go home every couple of years, and he goes,
it takes me a week to get used to the place,
and I come from there. It's something quite extraordinary, and
it's really hard to actually to settle into. You guys
(05:38):
will probably be settled by now, i'd suggest, although the
locals might be giving a wee bit of grief. Are
you feeling that energy from everybody?
Speaker 5 (05:46):
Oh?
Speaker 3 (05:47):
Not really.
Speaker 2 (05:47):
I mean, obviously everyone's very passionate about cricket over here,
but they also, you know, they also respect good performances,
I guess, and I think they also appreciate how difficult
it is to be India and India and you know
that we've gone out there and done something quite special,
So I think they respect that.
Speaker 5 (06:04):
But they get around the Indian team, no doubt about it,
I guess.
Speaker 2 (06:08):
Us it's about now we're at a new venue, and
it's really about I guess, acclimatizing to the conditions again
and adapting to what we are going to face, and
it'll be interesting to see what this wicket brings and
how it plays, and then it's about us adapting to
that and I guess, you know, or taking positive options
(06:29):
based on that surface.
Speaker 3 (06:31):
What's it going to do? When Kittie, what's it like?
Do you have any idea how it's going to respond,
how it's going to react.
Speaker 2 (06:37):
I think it'll certainly have a bit more pace in
the surface from from the last last wicket, and definitely
have a bit more bounce because it's predominantly red soil,
which tends to have those two attributes. And then it'll
be interesting to see how much it really turns. I
mean looking, it's looking pretty dry at.
Speaker 5 (06:53):
The minute, and.
Speaker 2 (06:54):
It'll be interesting to see how it kind of looks
closer to game time. And also this heat that things
can change very very quickly and that moisture kind of
comes out of the surface very quick. So it's just yeah,
I guess for us, it's making sure we adapt from
session decision and day to day and I guess take
up the challenges that are presented to us.
Speaker 3 (07:14):
Jeez, you've done so well the whole time I've been
chatting them and talking about the elephant in the room.
Come on, mate, you must have fond memories ten for
one hundred and nineteen. Come on, bro.
Speaker 2 (07:25):
Yeah, certainly fond memories obviously, But at the same time,
the game didn't really.
Speaker 5 (07:29):
Kind of pan out the way that we would have liked.
Speaker 2 (07:32):
So I guess, I guess that's the other thing I
always tend to look at, as you know, I guess
I guess the results. You know, when when you take
fifers and your team's winning, it's always quite cool, and when, yeah, when.
Speaker 5 (07:46):
It doesn't quite go your way, it kind of probably
doesn't feel as good.
Speaker 2 (07:50):
But in saying that, I can't lie and say that,
you know, taking ten workers in the game's not satisfying,
and I think it's the epuitomy.
Speaker 5 (07:56):
Of the game and you can't really you know, not
that feeling.
Speaker 2 (08:00):
But at the same time, I mean to be honest,
I still probably don't really comprehend it, and I probably
won't until I've kind of my career off. And it's
a weird thing to say, but it's kind of hard
to really describe really in that that feeling because I
guess you never expect something like that to happen or
achieve something like that.
Speaker 3 (08:20):
Nobody did lak you kumbay Pateel. I mean, really quite extraordinary.
But I'm sure you'll park that you'll get amongst and
hopefully well completely whitewashed the Indians. This could be a
magnificent five days, four days, three days of test cricket.
I just for tell, never at all speaking to you.
(08:41):
Get a marksman, enjoy yourself.
Speaker 5 (08:43):
Thank you very much.
Speaker 1 (08:44):
This is Sportsfix, your daily does of sports news, news
talks evy.
Speaker 4 (08:52):
It is very nearly here the historic first ever professional
New Zealand football derby just a couple of days away.
This coming Saturday, the seventeen year old Wellington Phoenix will
welcome their noisy neighbors, the Aleagues new Boys Auckland FC,
to sky Stadium. What an occasion. It promises to be
so much buzz about this game in the capital or
(09:12):
the crowd of over twenty thousand expected, including several hundred
traveling Auckland FC fans. Now, there may well be some people.
You might be one of them with divided loyalties, particularly
if you live in the Auckland region and you've supported
the Wellington Phoenix all these years simply because that's all
there was, that was the only professional football club in
(09:34):
New Zealand. They bring games to Auckland pretty much every
season and you back them when they were there. Some
of you may stick tight, stay with your team and
continue to support Wellington Phoenix from Auckland. Others will say, well,
now there's a team in my city who I can
go along and see play every other week, so I'm
going to support them.
Speaker 3 (09:55):
Now.
Speaker 4 (09:55):
Either of those two things is one hundred percent fine,
absolutely acceptable. But what is not not allowed in football
fandom is fence sitting. You simply have to choose either
stick or flip because football fandom simply doesn't allow you
to support two teams playing in the same league, because
(10:19):
when they play against one another, you are faced with
an impossible conundrum. So you've had a couple of weeks
to check out Auckland FC, to weigh them up, to
get a gauge on them, to perhaps decide whether they'refore
you or not. But now the first Darby is fast approaching.
You have to nail your colors to the mast. Are
(10:39):
you blue or are you yellow? Because here's one thing
that is for sure, you cannot be both.
Speaker 1 (10:48):
The Chamber is now in session on Sportsfax.
Speaker 4 (10:53):
Into the chamber, we wander and onto our leaners, we lean.
I don't know much about this new Warriors player, twenty
four year old Tanner Boyd out of the Gold Coast Titans.
I do know that he is a genuine NRL halfback.
That's got to be a good start, doesn't it does our.
Speaker 3 (11:08):
Sixty nine games, still relatively young to build into his career.
I haven't watched a great deal of the Titans at
all this season, so I'm not coming from a place
of strength. But Clark, Aaron Clark who's coming over. He
is a teammate of the Titans, so there's a nice
connection there. But I think what you said is the
most important thing here. He's young, he's a specialist seven,
(11:31):
although he can play at six and along with Tomighty Martin,
along with a Metcalfe. Even there he plays at six,
Harris Tavita and of course let's not forget Jet Cleary.
So it looks like they're preparing to have some solidity
in the hears, which, as we all know, is hues
the important Absolutely. Yeah.
Speaker 4 (11:52):
So when it wasn't Johnson last year, it was Martin
for the most part, wasn't it from the seven jumper
so if we look forward to seeing how Tanner Boyd
shapes up and yeah, Jet Clary, I'm interested to see
whether he has those genes running through him, which I
presume that he has. Looking forward to seeing Jet and
Warriors colors as well.
Speaker 3 (12:09):
Well, got too much pressure on, that's the big thing.
We can't go. Hey, you are the saving Grace, You're
the new Messiah. Say all right, let's just build your
confidence up. Let's get you into playing in the NRL
animal See it happens in two to three years. So
taking some pressure off him with Tanner board, which a
great move.
Speaker 4 (12:26):
Absolutely, it is, all right, one of the great sporting
events in history. In fact, I be keen to know
where you think it sits. Has has its fiftieth anniversary
today in New Zealand time. Anyway, the rumble in the Jungle.
Where does this sit in the pantheon of historic sporting events?
Speaker 3 (12:42):
It's hard because comparing a sporting event with a sporting
event is almost insane, isn't it. The whole apple's oranges, cantaloops, bananas, mangos,
whatever else. You can't But when it comes to the
effects that this fight has had and the place it
holds in our collective memories. Hard to go beyond it
in the fight game at least anyway. I mean like
(13:03):
you were still a nipper when it happened as well.
I just turned five and that was same here. If
you've seen the documentary, you'll know what I'm talking about.
Rumble and the Jungle most extraordinary. It was called when
we were Kings and that's about Have you seen that
at all?
Speaker 4 (13:23):
Haven't seen it, but I feel like on the fiftieth
anniversary of The Rumble and the Jungle, I should check
it out.
Speaker 3 (13:28):
It's an astonishing doco. I've watched it on a number
of occasions, and I think you forget that depth they
went into and how they managed to get this fight
over in Africa and the amount of people involved. You
sit there Pinet and you go, oh my god, what's
he doing there?
Speaker 5 (13:41):
Oh him?
Speaker 3 (13:41):
Oh that guy? Oh him? Oh really Oh. This goes
on and on. It is a wonderful documentary and it
sits nicely with the scrap itself. Something that sports fans
and fight fans particular should definitely watch, especially when George
Foreman is working the heavy bag. It's terrifying, all.
Speaker 4 (14:01):
Right, Ali and Foreman that rumble in the jungle fifty
years ago. Didn't it happen about three in the morning.
Speaker 3 (14:06):
Yeah, I had to for the TV or a TV
audience in the States and the like as well. So
that right right in the middle, and yet listening to
the crowd screaming, what was it? Killermali le k? Is
that what it said? I can't remember the actual word itself,
but this is this chant that they burst it out?
(14:27):
So how long seeing the documentary it's been, it's been
a couple of years, but wow, it was something else
and he really really bought into it and the fans
just loved him. All right.
Speaker 4 (14:37):
Going to check it out just before we exit the chamber.
The third Test between the black Caps and India starts tomorrow.
This is in Mumbai one kat Stadium in Mumbai. We've
already run the series two nels, so we don't have
to worry too much about this Test match. But what
do you predict for the five days starting tomorrow in Mumbo?
Speaker 3 (14:55):
It's impossible beating the Indians at home.
Speaker 4 (14:59):
And never, never twice at a row, three times.
Speaker 3 (15:03):
Never going to happen. And I talked last time about look,
we've got an angry Indian side They're going to turn angry, embarrassed,
freaked out, And I stand by it, and I think
I was right. That's not the right attitude or energy
to take into any sporting event. And we saw that
they enraged and they fell apart. So who's to say
(15:23):
that old mate won't do it again and pick up
another team. I don't know. Depends what the deck does.
But as far as predictions, I predict that I'll be
sitting in front of the TV till midnight Friday, Saturday,
Sunday and Monday and Tuesday. If it goes that far,
that's that's the length and bread to my predictions.
Speaker 4 (15:38):
Ponty you two, Yes, I will say I will take
the same position, not on your couch but on mine.
Um and I'm the same. It's a very friendly time
to be watching sport, isn't it. There's sort of four
to five o'clock in the afternoon through to when you
knock it on the head and head off to bed.
I'll be watching as well. Very curious to see India's response.
I think from the black Caps as well, they know
if another they get another victory, will test championships back
(16:01):
on to us.
Speaker 3 (16:01):
And when they qualified last time that to one of
these games in the bounds because it's not going to happen.
So they're bringing should we get this one? Sort we
should the Black Heaps get this one? Sort it out.
It's an England home series. Now the English have got
a complete team. I think the wicket keepers not coming over,
but they haven't got two of the keys, the Anderson's
(16:24):
and the Broads. And I wonder how that will affect
the tourists when they come over, especially if they see
a green seamer at Wellington and think it's actually going
to behave like that.
Speaker 4 (16:34):
Indeed, well, well, let's get this third Test against the
Indy're out of the way, looking forward to a hugely
anticipated home series against England when they arrive in the
next few weeks or so.
Speaker 3 (16:44):
I've got it, No, you can't go. It was a
le boom maya ah lee boom my ya oh. The
one is of the internet. How fast. I'm glad I
got that one.
Speaker 4 (16:52):
Right, well exactly. And you sing it so well, you
sing it so well, Darcy, my friend. That's us in
the chamber today.
