Speaker 2 (00:21):
Hello there and welcome into a fresh week and a
fresh episode of the Sports Fixed podcast for Monday, November four,
I'm Jason Pine. Good to have you along listening in today.
The black Caps have created another slice of history. What
a month it has been for them in India. When
they won the third Test yesterday, they become the first side,

(00:42):
or became the first side in history to ever beat
India to nil in a Test series in India. No
one in the history of Test cricket has ever in
a series one to nil in New Zealand had done
it three tests to nil. Incredible stuff from the black Caps.

(01:03):
The star of the show, or one of many stars
of the show, Will Young. He was named Player of
the series. He joins us very shortly on the Sports
Books podcast, Elijah a Field pops into the chamber as
we try and put this success into some sort of
context and talk about the All Blacks and the A League,
Derby and lots more. The sive So let's get into it.

Speaker 1 (01:22):
In other News, starting as always with some of the
big sports stories around today.

Speaker 2 (01:28):
Do bigess. The black Caps have created Test cricketing history
in Mumbai. A three mil victory means they're the first
side to sweep in the at home in a series
of three or more Test matches. A Jazz fatal eleven
for one hundred and sixty to earn Man of the Match.
Sometimes when you're in rhythm, it's about making the most
of it and when the conditions present themselves to you,
you know you have to, I guess, take it by

(01:49):
the horns and really do something for your team. Demotorsport
and Max for Staffins one of the Brazilian Grand Prix.

Speaker 1 (01:54):
Max for Stafford for the second year. Rudeggs, when's the
South power free?

Speaker 3 (02:00):
When's it?

Speaker 1 (02:01):
By absolute testa.

Speaker 2 (02:02):
Liam Lawson ninth to earn further points for racing balls
in the Drivers Championship and All Blacks coach Scott Robertson
has confirmed hooker Cody Taylor and playmaker Bowden Barrett have
been ruled out for this weekend's Test against Ireland after
failing concussion assessments against England.

Speaker 3 (02:19):
Yeah, the doc made their decision in the Protocolstad protocols.

Speaker 1 (02:25):
Clearly we've got just the ticket. It's Sports Fix powered
by News Talks Ivy.

Speaker 2 (02:33):
This is the Sports Fix podcast of Black Caps have
created Test cricketing history in Mumbai, beating India three nil
in a series in India, winning the third Test by
twenty five runs. No team has swept India at home
in a series of three or more matches. Will Young
was named player of the series for his two hundred
and forty four runs at an average of forty eight

(02:54):
point eight zero. He joins us now, well, thanks for
chatting to us on sports Flex. Where does this series
win rate among the highlights of your cricketing career?

Speaker 3 (03:03):
Hi, Pony, thanks for having me on. No. I think
it's it's certainly got to sit right at the top
of certainly my career. But you know, talking to the
guys last night and even the support staff in this
group who have been part of New Zealand cricket for
a long time, you know it's I think it's sitting
at the top of the tree for everyone. It's yeah,
it's been a remarkable three weeks or so over here

(03:25):
and the boys are just, yeah, so stoked with with
how it's gone.

Speaker 2 (03:29):
Having won the first two tests of the series and
therefore having secured an historic series win. Was there a
different feeling at all heading into the third test?

Speaker 3 (03:42):
You know, we talk about trying to you know, play
test matches just game by game, and obviously the first
victory was the first time since nineteen eighty eight that
would want a test, and then our sites were set on, right,
you know, we can actually win a series here. And
we went to poone and we knew the conditions would
be different and it'd be, yeah, a completely different set

(04:03):
of challenges and we had our had our eyes firmly
set on winning the series. And then you know, we
celebrated really well after that, and we went to Mumbai
and you know, just that that final carrot dangling of
you know, no team has ever done this before, and
you know, we're in uncharted territory in a way, and
and the boys are really excited at the prospect of that.
And again it was just a slightly different tapoone. You know,

(04:25):
the ball was bouncing more than it was there and
and and seem has bowled a little bit more. To
be honest, it was it was tough against seam with
the new ball, but I think we just embraced the
challenge and and tried to keep it, you know, just
game by game and session by session and keep doing
our bits and and in the end, yeah, to be
where we are now and to be talking to you

(04:47):
three nil was just just amazing. So proud of everyone
and all they they put in over the series. You know,
everyone chipped in at different times.

Speaker 2 (04:54):
Yeah. I want to talk specifically about that in Just
to See. But but New Zealand came into the series
off the back of a couple of defeats in Sri Lanka.
I know you didn't play in those test matches, but
did anything change in India? Yeah?

Speaker 3 (05:09):
No, to be honest, you know, we've we talk about
you know, sticking to what we know and you know,
bringing our strengths to the to the table and firing
a shot. And you know we tried that in Shlunka.
But you know, you don't always succeed in sport, and
and sometimes you learn more from your failures than you
do your successes. And I think we went home and

(05:30):
we just had a bit of a regroup and and
just you know, tidy up a few things around. You know,
what it is you want to bring to the team
as a bloke. You know, we're all all good cricketers,
but you know, just remembering like who you're representing and
it's the guy next to you, and you know, just
little things like that. I think. And we went to
India and it's always exciting playing cricket over here, and

(05:51):
I think the guys just felt refreshed and read a
fire fire a shot. Really we had nothing to lose,
and that that's the way we played. It was. It
was special, really special to be part of a group
with that sort of feeling.

Speaker 2 (06:02):
There were some standout individual performances in the series, Rights
and Revendra's century and Bengalaru Mitchell thirteen wikets and pune
ajs Battel eleven in Mumbai, but it seemed as though
across the series there were important contribution from everybody who
took the field. Did this feel like a true team effort?

Speaker 3 (06:23):
Yeah, yeah, it truly did. Yeah, it seems like a
while ago now, but you know, the way Rutch embatted
in Bungalore was incredible. You know, the seamas in that
game got us into the game to start with, and
then the spin came in later. It was if you
look at the averages of our batters throughout the series.
You know, they're all right up there. We've all contributed

(06:44):
at different times and personally, like I've come away with
the player of the series. But it feels a bit funny,
you know, I didn't score one hundred. I just sort of,
I guess, just quite consistent. And that's what we talked about,
is as a batting unit was coming in at different times,
firing a shot, building small partnerships, because those small partnerships

(07:05):
really do add up over here. And if you can
stop that momentum and stop you know, to speaking cliches,
you know, losing the wickets and clumps, you can put
some pressure back on back on the Indians and that's
what we managed to do. And yeah, it was so cool.
Like obviously this last game with the ball as well,
the way a Jazz bold was incredible. It seemingly likes

(07:26):
to bawl the Mumbai so as you say, Poney, you know,
just yeah, awesome, awesome contributions throughout and in the field too.
You know, different guys stepped up at different times with
the ball, with the bat. It was just, yeah, a
real team performance.

Speaker 2 (07:39):
Yeah, well, you talked about your consistency and in a
series where ball did dominate bat. The numbers would tell
you one hundred and twelve wickets fell for two thousand
and seven hundred and twenty eight runs. That's an average
of about twenty four runs per wicket, and amongst that
you averaged nearly fifty How happy were you with the
way you batted and your contributions to the series win.

Speaker 3 (08:00):
Yeah, I was really pleased, you know, to come into
the side after doing some really good training. We're in
India before the Sri Lanka series for a game that
got washed out and then you had to train away
in Sri Lanka and you know, go about my bits
and feel nice and prepared and relaxed, and go out
and do it and just do it in my own way.
You know. It's pretty awesome, to be honest, And you know,

(08:24):
I've had some really nice messages and things, and yeah,
I guess that's cricket. I've just got to keep doing
that over and over again. But no, it feels really
special to contribute to this.

Speaker 2 (08:36):
Ting And was it particularly special to hit the winning
runs in the first Test, the first victory for New
Zealand and a Test in India since nineteen eighty eight.

Speaker 3 (08:48):
Yeah, yeah, it was. You know, it's always just sort
of the cherry on top if you get to hit
the winning runs. So yeah, I mean just to be
out there and to be involved in the win and
you know, have that little partnership with Rutching to get
us over the line. I think I took a lot
of confidence from that into the rest of the series
and yeah, managed to build from there, which.

Speaker 2 (09:11):
Is nice, incredible what you guys have done. We loved
watching every moment of it. Back here will congratulations to
you and the team. Safe travels back, look forward to
catching up when you get back home.

Speaker 3 (09:20):
Thanks very much, Pony s.

Speaker 2 (09:23):
Plenty of great sport on over the weekend. Just want
to touch quickly on the brilliant occasion at Sky Stadium
on Saturday, first ever keiw WE Professional Football derby Wellington
Phoenix Auckland FC. Thought it was a terrific occasion. Plenty
of hype around about the game and the lead up
to it, and it delivered crowd over twenty six thousand,
a record for a Phoenix regular season game, a massive
number of traveling fans and they were awesome. They added

(09:45):
to the color of the occasion. It was a shame
that one of the key moments of the game was
a mistake rather than a moment of brilliance and error
of course by Wellington goalkeeper Josh Olaway eemmy now eras
by goalkeepers, of course a magnified If a midfielder or
a striker gives the ball away, then it normally doesn't matter.
But when a goalkeeper gives it away, the consequences are
often far more severe, and that proved to be the

(10:07):
case on I had a misplaced pass in your own
penalty area. Are always going to be fraught with danger.
But if your plan, if your tactic is to play
out from the back and try and draw players in
and create space for counterattacks, you can't just bin those
tactics the first time it doesn't go right. You can't say, okay,
well we gave that a go it didn't work, we
gave up a goal. We'll try something else. The Phoenix

(10:29):
scored a lot of goals last season using that very method,
so don't expect them to change just because of one mistake.
They will for the meantime anyway, keep playing out from
the back. I could also tell you that the man
in question, Phoenix keeper Josh olloway jem. He stayed out
after the game and signed every single autograph, posed for
every single selfie for the fans who line up after

(10:49):
every game to meet the players. He could easily have
gone straight into the changing sheds. I would have. I
would have got out of there as quickly as I could.
He didn't do that. I've seen plenty of players go
straight under the stands, having made far less high profile
mistakes than that, But not Josh Olowa. Yimmy. He stayed
out there, shook hands, the selfies, had chats when really

(11:10):
inside he must have been mortified with what had played out.
I thought it was really classy what he did. But
back to the crowd, more people there at the same
venue than the All Blacks Argentina test earlier this year.
I never thought I would see the day that two
New Zealand football sides would attract a crowd like that.
The KIW Dhrby is going to be appointment viewing.

Speaker 1 (11:32):
The Chamber is now in session on Sportsfix on the
Sports Fix podcast.

Speaker 2 (11:38):
Time to pop inside the Chamber on Monday. It's the
People's Chamber with Elijah joining us as per usual. How
was your weekend, mate? Really good?

Speaker 4 (11:47):
Ponting. I actually ran the Auckland Half marathon yesterday, so
I can't feel my legs right now. But other than that,
it's great to be back in the chamber.

Speaker 2 (11:54):
Good to know that it hasn't affected your voice. But
congratulations on that. That are some feet well done. Indeed
our hope and amongst all of the training and obviously
running the half, you managed to catch am at a
sport because I wanted to get your gauge on this
black Caps series win over India, something nobody saw coming.

(12:15):
How significant is this?

Speaker 4 (12:17):
I think this is the greatest Test series whin we've
had for New Zealand. I think every test in the
series we've created some sort of history. Prior to the
first Test, we hadn't been in India on Indian soil
in thirty six years. Prior to the second Test, we
had never won a series against India in India, and
prior to the third Test, India had never been swept
in a three Test series. I think they'd lost a

(12:39):
two game two match series during their time, but never
in three games. So I mean this is very historical
and I guess the best part of this whole series
is that at some point during the series, everyone has
contributed in some way, whether it's with the bat or
the ball, to each of the victories. And that's an
awesome team achievement for the black Caps.

Speaker 2 (12:59):
Yeah, you land on such a good point because this
isn't a Test series where there have been amazing individual performances.
You think Mitchell Santner with you know, thirteen wickets in
the second Test, Ajz Battel with his eleven in the
third Test. But everybody at some point has contributed. I
was at a function last night and it started at

(13:19):
around about the same time that the day started, and
I checked my phone and I saw that ajs batteller
got out and they needed or they need one hundred
and thirty hundred and forty whatever it was to win
the game. I thought, oh, okay, we're probably not going
to win it. I checked in again and all of
a sudden they're twenty nine for five and I thought
we're going to win the Test. But then I kept
on sort of, you know, checking back in, checking back in.

(13:40):
But what a rollercoaster of a day. And again, I
think it just proves Test cricket can provide moments that
the white ball games. I don't reckon anyway can provide
us exactly.

Speaker 4 (13:51):
It's the purest form of the game and it's by
far the best form of the game. And I think
when you have a guy for India like Parts who
look to be the danger man for the hosts, you
need a guy like AJS Patel, who if he hasn't
been given the keys to Mumbai by now, he probably should.
But he was amazing and his performance and as well
as assisted big Len Phillips and you know, helping get

(14:13):
that victory for New Zealand.

Speaker 2 (14:16):
It sets up this home series against England so beautifully,
doesn't it. I just can't wait for these tests series
or these test matches back here in New Zealand. But
what a confidence boost for this team to, as you've said,
make history three times and to do something that no
other team in the history of this great game has
ever done. Just brilliant three tests in India for the
Black Apps. Now, before we came into the chamber, check

(14:38):
the odds for the All Blacks game against Ireland. Ireland
are firm favorites against the All Blacks this coming Saturday morning,
New Zealand time. Friday night in Dublin, A dollar fifty
plays two dollars fifty. I can't remember any New Zealand
team ever being up against an opponent who was at
a dollar fifty on our tab. Have they got this right?

Speaker 4 (15:02):
Yeah, I'm a little bit shocked. That's the first time
I've heard those odds and I'm actually shocked to hear
that as well. I guess because Ireland are the hosts.
I'm not sure if Jonathan Sexton has sort of had
a chat with the bookies about making Ireland the favorites.
But yeah, that is very shocking to me.

Speaker 2 (15:21):
I guess you look at and I'm sure this has
played into it. No Cody Taylor for the All Blacks
and actually no bode In Bear at either, but the
Cody Taylor one is massive for me, a sophore more
of course, had to come into the Test match against
England on the weekend five minutes in after Cody Taylor
went off with the concussion, which is ruled them out
of this one. George Bell and now Bradley schlater, that

(15:43):
is a pretty raw hooking cohort, isn't it.

Speaker 4 (15:48):
It is very much so. And I think we looked
back when this squad for the All Backs was named,
but also the All Backs fifteen squad was named when
guys like Kirk Eckland missed out on the All Blacks
or Ricky Rickattelli missed out on the All Backs fifteen.
Now would have been a great time to have sort
of those guys and their experience possibly playing against Ireland.
But it's going to be a huge ask for the

(16:09):
rest of the hooking departments. But also I guess when
you look at the wider squad, there's a lot of
guys like Wallace's ts who had a very confident, confident
boosting performance against England, and also Mark Hilaire as well,
whose individual brilliance, especially in that second try, helped you
all backs out. So they're obviously going to be looking
at guys like them to step up against Ireland this week.

Speaker 2 (16:31):
I think, I said Bradley Slater, I met Brody McAllister
of course as coming as hooking cover, but still I
think the point stands it is a very green hooking cohort.
So yeah, we wait and see what happens to those
odds across the week as these two teams are named.
Either way, it's going to be a magnificent occasion. Speaking
of what's just before we exit the chamber. I'm not
sure whether you called any of the A League derby

(16:54):
on Saturday, but I can totally from up close it
was an incredible occasion. What did you make of twenty
six thousand people turning up to watch a football match
between two New Zealand teams.

Speaker 4 (17:05):
I think that's awesome, especially for the first ever professal
A League derby between two New Zealand clubs. Obviously down
there at Sky Stadium down in Allington. Because I believe
Auckland took the w we're currently holding on to it
for the next month or so. But I think it
did live up to the billding of, you know, a
derby game and what it's supposed to be. There are
moments that had fans on the edge of their seats

(17:27):
and only needed one key moment to really decide this contest,
and unfortunately for for josh Oliway Jemmy it was his
errands passed that found Jake Brimmer and led to that
first goal and ultimately probably stealed the wind for the visitors.
But as a as a spectacle, as an occasion watching
from afar, I thought it was an awesome atmosphere to watch.

Speaker 2 (17:48):
Yea and yeah, as I say, from being on the
ground there or in the ground, yeah it was, it
really was. And if this is a sign of things
to come as far as this rivalry is concerned, then yeah,
I think every derby between Wellington Phoenix and Auckland FC
is going to be appointment viewing and I just hope
they continue along the same because it was just an

(18:09):
absolutely terrific event and a great thing to be at.
Or Loja, we've run quickly out of time here in
the chamber today. Great to have you chatting sport as always.
Let's make an appointment to do it again next Monday.
