Speaker 1 (00:09):
You're listening to a podcast from news Talks at be
follow this and our wide range of podcasts now on iHeartRadio.

Speaker 2 (00:17):
This is Sportsfix.

Speaker 1 (00:19):
Howard by News Talk said, be.

Speaker 3 (00:22):
Welcome into the Fixed podcast. Great to have you all
on board. My name is Darcy Waldgrave. It is Wednesday.
It's the sixth of November twenty twenty four on your
home of all the great sports you need and bite
sized chunks. What have we got for today? Former All
Black Jeff Wilson that joins the program as we look
at the challenge that the Irish present and they now

(00:43):
become our greatest rival, and how much does niggle help
in a conversation like this I have we yarn about.
I won't say I'm a mate because I've only met
him once, but a jazz Pttel one of my favorite cricketers,
one of the nicest guys you'd ever meet, and his
checked around his unlikely future for the black Caps more

(01:04):
than that or me Later on the pace and Alex
Powell joins us in studio. As we climb into the bunker,
we lean on the leaner and we talk about the
big sports stories of the day. That's our plan and
we fully intend to rigorously stick to that.

Speaker 1 (01:19):
Let's go in other news.

Speaker 3 (01:23):
Time to take a wee Listen at Sport today and
the All Whites are taking no chances when it comes
to their looming pair of World Cup qualifiers on home
soil and all but full strength squad's been named for
games against Fina too on November fifteenth and somehe on
November eighteenth. Coach Darren Baisley is happy to have such

(01:43):
a strong side at his disposal. They're very good players,
so yeah, having them return is great and the only
one that we really lost was Ben Old to an injury,
so apart from that, we've got a really strong squad.
Iland center Gary Ringrose has been keeping eyes on All
Blacks Jordi Barrett and Rica Yuanni all year ahead of

(02:04):
a probable matchup in Saturday mornings Test and Dublin. The
midfielders are expected to be named overnight in starting bursts
for their respective sides for the end of year tour match.
Ringros It says it's clear how much Barrett and Yuwani
are feeding off each.

Speaker 4 (02:21):
Other, pretty saddled and cohesive together as a partnership, and yea,
I would have been watching them down on the weekend
against a tough, resilient English side and that we're throwing
everything at them, and yeah, like they have done in
a lot of games. Just as a center partnership, they
seem to take everything in their stride.

Speaker 3 (02:36):
Cameron Norrie Hope's home comforts can inspire a change in
tennis fortunes. He's confirmed for January's ASP Classic in Auckland,
but has dropped to fifty seven in the world rankings
after a three month spell out with a four arm injury.
No he's been runner up twice at the tournament in
eight previous appearances. He sees the environment resonates grew up.

Speaker 2 (02:59):
They're playing at Buck and speech Sennis Club.

Speaker 4 (03:01):
That was where I started learning tennis, so it's a
special place for me.

Speaker 1 (03:04):
Leading of VIX, we've got just the ticket. It's sports Fit, Expo, News.

Speaker 3 (03:09):
Talks and it's a warm welcome to Jeff Wilson, former
All Black, current broadcaster, Jeff. Welcome and great to have
you on board. Tell us about the Irish, Is this
our new greatest rivalry?

Speaker 2 (03:24):
If you're talking more welcomes. I'm pretty sure that the
All Blacks when they get to the stadium, we've gottle
bit more than that. There's certainly some heat in this contest.
Now we know the rivalry over the last five, six,
seven years, and now I think it's it's sort of
almost expected. You know, Island have been one of the
best teams in the world over the last few years.
They've proven that time and time again, and when they

(03:45):
came to New Zealand and my series here for the
first time, it's almost like in their own years that
have conquered the beast, and their expectations are now that
they can do any any time they'd like. And a
lot happened last year, in particular Reggie World Cup with
my Lord. I tell you what this game is going
to have. It's going to have plenty of it because
for them that we're are to a massive point.

Speaker 3 (04:08):
Have they been carrying that defeat right the way through
to your things that lived rent free in your head?
To use a popular term.

Speaker 2 (04:15):
I think that's the thing does the look I can
talk from an experience, you know, when there are games
that live with you until you get an opportunity to
play that team a game. So that's what Island have
been waiting for. The fans have been waiting for it,
and you know, they'll be looking back at what happened
in the quarterfinal of the World Cup and no one
expected that. They thought they'd find a way to beat
the All Blacks, and you know now they've got to wait,

(04:37):
you know, more more time to get to that lever
again and they have to go through the All Blacks again,
and so you know, I just think there's just so
many players that are involved in it, and there's enough
of this All Black team to know what to expect.
And like I say, this has become one of our
great tussles. Now, I don't think this is going to
go away for a very long time.

Speaker 3 (04:57):
When you look at result wise, you say, this shouldn't
be a great tussle, but recent history is what sticks
in our mind. And the Iris, now, as you mentioned,
genuinely believe their on even footing with us. Do we
have that same fear of.

Speaker 2 (05:12):
Them though, Yeah, I think we do. I think we
do truly respect them and we sort of know that,
you know, the way that they play the game, and
they have evolved, they have got better. You know, under Pharaoh,
Joe Smith did an unbelievable job. But then you know,
Farrell's taken them to the next level and they know that.
You know, all facets of the game, I holland have

(05:34):
got better, have improved. They can match the All Blacks
up front there, forward, back is incredibly powerful. Their scratmage
really well. They're great around the park, skill set strong.
So you know, all the things that I think that
the or Blacks like to do, they do just as
well now. And so this is why I think for
the All Blacks they know how tough it's going to be.

(05:55):
And look at the Orbocks are going to go into
this game with a few guys missing through injury, so
they'll be double with the underdog, you know, and some
young players are going to, I think, get a real
fast education about what it's like to play a Northern
Hemisphere team away in their own house.

Speaker 3 (06:12):
Wouldn't you look at the Irish and their approach to this,
not on the field, but off the field, and there
was antagonism. I think that's a fair thing to say
through books, through voices and through history last five to
ten years anyway. Do you think maybe everybody thinks that
around the or Blacks, but the Irish are the only
one is brave enough to actually say it.

Speaker 2 (06:32):
It's a really it's a really good question. I'm not sure,
Like I've been really impressed. You know, I was at
the two test Mextors here in museum and England played
the Backs and the even saw on the leaked. You know,
you get the senses of real respect between those two teams,
and you know, there's nothing going on and behind the scenes,
they compete and they play hard, and you know, I

(06:52):
think it's just this runs a little bit deeper, you know,
and there's been some rivalries and there's been things that
have been said, you know, during games and after games,
which you know, it's just added fuel to the fire
for both teams. You know, I think there's a respect
in terms of how each other can play the game,
but in terms of the fact that this is I
suppose bragging rights, trying to set a standard and trying

(07:15):
to you know, I suppose, say, you might be the
number one team in the world, but we're good enough
to go out there and compete and perform, and look,
we are still the All Blacks.

Speaker 3 (07:24):
They wilted under the pressure of the quarter final. What
do they take out of that They've going to reapply
or or leave behind in this game coming up on
Saturday morning. Because the pressure of that game. It squashed them.
They're at home in front of a rampant crowd. Can
they respond on the same way? Will that pressure squash them?
What could they learn?

Speaker 2 (07:45):
Yeah? Look, I think you know, I was at that
game last year and I think, out of respect for
both teams, both teams played out standing on the day,
like the All Blacks had comfortably their best performance of
the season and at the Rugan World Cup. You know,
they played a couple of other games where they were dominant,
but that was a fight against arguably the number one
team in the world. Like that's what you were they

(08:07):
were up against. So as much as they wilted under
the pressure, Look, you know, the last what four and
a half minutes of play where you know you've got
two seems one not giving away a penalty in the
other team not making a mistake, I think actually showed
exactly how good they are. So I think from my perspective,
you know Islands at home though, no, that they are

(08:27):
good enough. They've done it before in recent U guess
they've got over the hurdle. They've done what they've never
done before when they came to New Zealand. So I
don't think it's wilting under the pressure. I think it's
actually in some ways it's just them doing what they've done,
not just once, but numerous occasions. They've actually delivered under pressure.
They've just got to do it again, and they've actually

(08:47):
got the weight of numbers and supporters behind them. So
I think that's why they clearly are favorites going into
the game.

Speaker 3 (08:53):
Former All Black broadcaster Jeff Wilson that joins us. Let's
talk about the bad guy, let's talk about legal let's
talk about people antagonizing each other. That helps the rivalry.
I don't know if we get that with South Africa,
but they're not afraid to come forward and have a crack?
Are they the iris? And that's got to increase the

(09:13):
energy around the fact for all concerned.

Speaker 2 (09:17):
Yeah, look, I suppose it's sometimes you know, the biggest
turtle playing against the All Blacks is the mental hurt
and you know, and you just talked about dealing with
the pressure. I think that's that's where Island sort of
got to with the game. And they have a lot
of players who for a long long time hadn't been
able to get over that and had had long careers
and Johnson and sex and clearlyes that that guy and

(09:39):
has led that team. But what they've done you this
season and transitioning through that, they've still kept their identity.
We all wondered whether or not that same fire would
be there. Well, it's certainly still there, and the quality
is certainly still there and the belief most importantly is
still there. So in terms of that negel, sometimes you
need what you know, what you need to do to

(10:01):
get yourself mentally in that state where you are going
to be able to compete. And for them for Ireland,
I think it's a bit of that is the fact
that they they go out and they do posture a
little bit. I'm not saying they're arrogant. What I'm doing
saying is the fact that they put themselves in the
position to try and mentally put the team under pressure and.

Speaker 3 (10:20):
On that Jeff Wilson, Form All Black and current broadcaster,
we think very much for your time, your concepts, your ideas,
you'll ca after yourself and enjoy Saturday morning. It's going
to be an absolute treat.

Speaker 2 (10:31):
It's going to be a beauty. Honestly, I've circled this
one on the calendar the moment I saw this day,
I'm ready and waiting.

Speaker 1 (10:38):
This is Sportsfects, your daily dose of sports news, cower
By News Talks.

Speaker 3 (10:45):
Ajas Patel, the Mumbai Marauder, has been asked about his
future as a tweaker for the Black Cats, which quite
frankly doesn't look great if you look at the history
of selecting spinners at home in New Zealand conditions. This
is what he said though, when asked about his future
and where he sees it playing out, he said, the

(11:08):
moment is very very special. What we've achieved is quite phenomenal.
But I don't want to look too far ahead. Whatever
happens happens. I'm a big believe in destiny. Whatever is
destined for you will come your way. For me, it's
about staying in the moment and enjoying now. We'll worry
about what's coming up later on. Couldn't have said it

(11:28):
better myself. This is a guy who understands where he
sits and wants to bask in the glory of what
was an outstanding tour of India. To try around ideas
about where he's going to be and who should pack
him and why he should be picked in some and
so forth serves no purpose for him whatsoever. And I
don't think enough people in this world appreciate the moment,

(11:52):
appreciate the present, can sit back and realize what they've got,
not look forward to something you can't control, or look
back at something that's already happened. These are the you
can't control. This is fantastic from AJS. Patel. What happens
in the future. Wow, test spinners. They are hardly thick
on the ground here in New Zealand. And you look

(12:12):
at a guy like Glenn Phillips, who's pretty handy with
a tweak, who's also a brutal bludgeoner of the ball,
they're more than likely to lean toward that. And of
course you've got Natchal Santana and what he's achieved to
and he's handy with the bat captaincy skills. So I
don't think age As will get picked again short of injury.

(12:33):
But you just don't know. And is he so succinctly
pointed out, I'm enjoying the moment. I'm not looking too
far forward. He's got no control over this, so why
would he spend time stressing if it's his destiny? It's
his destiny? Good on you age Azz.

Speaker 1 (12:50):
The chamber is now in session on Sportsfax.

Speaker 3 (12:56):
Time to climb now into the chamber. Alex Powell, the
digital sport editor for New Zealand Herald, joins us. Now,
very good day to you, sir. I trust your will,
I am well and to you, my friend, thank you
very much. Let's keeck that off with Ajas Patel looking
at his future, which he'd probably suggest he hasn't got
one playing at home, has he? But he was up

(13:17):
front about it.

Speaker 4 (13:17):
Uh.

Speaker 5 (13:18):
I mean, I love Ajastell. Let's let's get that on
the record. But I just don't see Wilbury. He plays
for his und again. We don't play test cricket in
Asia until twenty twenty seven at the earliest. I mean,
and so unless you want to take him to Zimbabwe, Australia,
England from the middle of next year till twenty six,
there's just not going.

Speaker 3 (13:36):
To be well. It's just bloody mimighted thinking though from
the black Caps selectors of indeed that happens, not allowing
him a chance to maybe flourish after a succeed or
is it a case it's too old, We've got sand,
we've got phillips, so of course contweet too, but he's
very aggressive with the bat. Where where does this shape?

Speaker 5 (13:52):
I mean, if you look at the success the black
Caps have had in the last few years, it's built
around that strategy of four quick bowlers. You know, you
remember Bolt Sowdi Wagner, Jamison right, two swing bowlers, two
bounced bolts. If they want to stick to that, They've
now actually got the perfect foil England Phillips who can
bat at seven and bold spin when they need. So
if that's the case and the only spin is going
to come from an all rounder, you're either going to

(14:14):
have to play someone higher up in the order to
get ages and or just not play.

Speaker 3 (14:17):
It well rechend Revenda. Of course he can. Well, it's
going to be a while yet before he comes into plaze,
but that is an option in the future, is it not?

Speaker 5 (14:24):
To be honest, I don't want Retes. It doesn't need
to bowl. If he's going to be the number four bat,
don't worry about bowling, mate, focus on that. Focus on that.
And we've seen what happens when he focuses on that.
Because I don't think he bowled terminy overs in that
India series. No, and he bloody what.

Speaker 3 (14:40):
He did when he was focused. Every now and then
he kind of turns off, doesn't he And there's the wickets,
like what happened there? So yeah, that happened there. But this,
this is maturity. This is understanding your role and how
to check out at the end of each ball. They
check back and again at the start of the next one,
which isn't quite the art.

Speaker 5 (14:55):
And that'll come with experience because we know how good
Russian is like upstairs as well as with the bat.

Speaker 3 (15:00):
So Aja is no real future.

Speaker 5 (15:02):
I mean, I don't want to say it, but I
don't think he's going to play for his own.

Speaker 3 (15:06):
Well, you wrote this piece in his own head. They're
all talking about what happened when Nathan Lyon span his
way through us all. I mean that was in New Zealand.
It would have been a green Seama and we spooked
ourselves over that. Normally we spooked the opposition, but that
just didn't work.

Speaker 5 (15:20):
I think it's a big misconception that New Zealand pictures
don't spin. I think they do spin in the certain
conditions that spin takes place. I mean I don't think
early in the season it'll spin, but definitely at the
end of the year or the end of the cricket season.
Of course they will because it's hotter.

Speaker 3 (15:31):
But it's fitting somebody into that lineup, and that's it
is who do you drop out? And that is the point.
Look that we might have injury, he might come back again,
but yep, thirty six, he's not getting any younger. But
I'm with you. He's a top human being, wonderful to
talk to and really disarmingly honest about what he does
and what he stands for. It's so cool.

Speaker 5 (15:49):
Yeah, one of the real stories of this Black Cats generation.

Speaker 3 (15:52):
Enough on cricket, that's one summer sport, another summer sport.
The start of the year asb tennis center, it's all
on Cameron Norri's on board and it doesn't matter who's
running that show, who the tournament director is, they always
managed to collect themselves some some good gets. One of
a better phrase.

Speaker 5 (16:10):
I think it's really credit to the way that tournament's
run by. Not just the las lambrin now, but the
regia is a regime not the right word, but the.

Speaker 3 (16:17):
Group beforehand's cruel.

Speaker 5 (16:20):
But no players love coming yet they love that they
can walk down the street and not get bothered. They
love that they can just turn up, have a bit
of a holiday and then get into some tents before
for the Australian Open. So yeah, I don't think it's
a bit of last big signing that comes out before
the tournamentually.

Speaker 3 (16:33):
Again, well, he's got a history, he because he used
to watch it when he's a kid. You used to
love going on id lives these characters and this is
the ninth time I think he's turning up. So having
Lockin's like that really really good, great, great for the
local community. Even though he disappeared to England, he's still
very much an Awkland boy.

Speaker 5 (16:48):
And that's what he says as well, isn't it. But
you look at the woman's draw as well, you know,
you look at some of the guys they can't be
and Kangees who's coming, Nomeo Osaka is coming? Like this
is really good if you're you know, a young tennis
loving kid that you can see these guys playing or
girls playing.

Speaker 3 (17:03):
At huh yeah, and get in there and go around
the courts and go and look at qualifying you even
know who you might be to look back in a
few yars time and go you know what actually saw
Roger Federer.

Speaker 5 (17:13):
Well, I saw Andy Murray and two doesn't it?

Speaker 3 (17:16):
Who's that guy? Looks all right? Oh wow? Went on
there and he was rubbish. Let's hope for better weather
than that than the rubbish. It's not been good. How close?
Because I was talking to Nikos lamper And about this recently,
about the roof possibly possibly twenty late twenty five, twenty six,
maybe because that would be healthy. You remember the treach
for a summer of a couple of years ago.

Speaker 5 (17:37):
It's like, yeah, as the person who stayed up till
two in the morning covering that for a different media organization, Yes,
I do remember.

Speaker 3 (17:42):
That, looking forward to covering it again for the hero.
He's going to keep well away from that gun holiday.

Speaker 5 (17:48):
I think we've got two very capable tennis riders, and
Michael Burgers and Bonnie Jansen. So if I get thrown out,
I'll absolutely pick it up. But I don't think I will.

Speaker 3 (17:55):
That's good. You leave it to the people who you trust. Right.
Last subject, Cameron Roygard. He starts against Igrands, doesn't he
does he?

Speaker 5 (18:02):
I hope so, because if it looks like Damian McKenzie
starts at ten, then who gets the best out of him.

Speaker 3 (18:06):
I think it's Cam Royguard combination.

Speaker 5 (18:08):
Complimentary I mean in saying that quarters Ruts made a
pretty good season with him at the Chiefs.

Speaker 2 (18:13):
No.

Speaker 5 (18:13):
I think, Look, there's going to be a lot of
selections in this Test that are really going to be crucial,
and half back's one of them. When the All Blacks
are going to need someone who gets quick ball to
the back line, and for me, that's Cam roy Guard.
He's the best passer, he's the best runner. The only
question is is he actually fit. He missed a lot
of rugby and he's had what three or four games
off the bench the Counties and now for the All Blacks.

(18:33):
So if he's ready, chuck him in there.

Speaker 3 (18:34):
You get the thought though that he will make himself fit.
It seems old. You can't magic it out of nowhere,
but for such a big occasion, because it is he'll
run through walls to get there and play. And you're
right about the passing speed. If mckingser needs anything, he
needs time.

Speaker 5 (18:52):
Yeah. I think there's a very big difference between fitness
and match fitness though, and that's why they'll be reticent
to throw Royguard to the Wolves like that because this
is a big game for me. This is the biggest
game of the year. I know we've had two against
South Africa, but Ireland in Ireland with everything that's gone
on over the past coup, so.

Speaker 3 (19:07):
The animosity that this is because I'm thinking that island
might just be the biggest rivalry right now for the
all blacks. I know the tradition is South Africa, but
what's going on in the last few years. They niggle,
don't they love beating those guys.

Speaker 5 (19:22):
Yeah, it's a rivalry that's built on results. Like South
Africa's the historic rivalry. We've got so much shared history
as two nations, Australia's geographical. The island is competitive and
that's what you want. That's what the best rivalries are
built on.

Speaker 3 (19:35):
What about the shots fired all the way through it?
We've got that. Gregor Paul write a really good piece
in The Herald around the recent history of the island
and the antagonism between the teams and the hatred because
it is and they don't mind a bit of a chip.
They have a right guard. I think their media climbed
on pool with it as well, isn't they.

Speaker 5 (19:52):
Do you reckon? This is how everyone looks at the
All Blacks and Island are the only ones actually coming
out and saying it. Why are you getting all the attenchament?
We're the best team in the world.

Speaker 3 (20:00):
I suppose we look back to horrible occasions like the
knee to the head of Richie McCall and the just
a rubbish just change that phrase, Ritchie mccor. You look
at Brian O'Driscoll and what happened there. You look at
the winging coming out coming out of Sex and there's
a lot of it, isn't there. Yeah.

Speaker 5 (20:21):
Look, I don't think this game needs any added feel,
but that doesn't mean we're not going to get any,
especially when the team's named and we get these narratives.

Speaker 3 (20:27):
Now are they going to behave? That's the thing? Because
of anything, you want to get up the All Blacks
and see if they can make a mistake, See they
can actually lose their composure and lose their call. Do
you think the team is calm enough not to react
to what will be inevitable?

Speaker 5 (20:40):
I'd suggest I worry for one reco you, Annie, I
don't know how he's going to keep it in it
because we know he's a passionate guy. He loves playing
for the All Blacks, but he also loves a bit
of nevil. You know he is. There is the air
apparent to Dame Cole's in that regard.

Speaker 3 (20:54):
It could be the making him turn up in another
virtue iso performance in the midfield and just walk away.
Just give it the ADM Vanua Blake with the hands.

Speaker 5 (21:03):
Yeah to one side and low, just the old arms cross.
That's what he does, doesn't he right?

Speaker 3 (21:07):
Sob it We're out, Get out of this chamber, Get
off this Lena always a pleased to have you in
there to do. Editor from New Zealand Herald and Liam Wawson.
Tragic mister Alex Powell, thanks mate.

On Purpose with Jay Shetty

I’m Jay Shetty host of On Purpose the worlds #1 Mental Health podcast and I’m so grateful you found us. I started this podcast 5 years ago to invite you into conversations and workshops that are designed to help make you happier, healthier and more healed. I believe that when you (yes you) feel seen, heard and understood you’re able to deal with relationship struggles, work challenges and life’s ups and downs with more ease and grace. I interview experts, celebrities, thought leaders and athletes so that we can grow our mindset, build better habits and uncover a side of them we’ve never seen before. New episodes every Monday and Friday. Your support means the world to me and I don’t take it for granted — click the follow button and leave a review to help us spread the love with On Purpose. I can’t wait for you to listen to your first or 500th episode!
