Speaker 1 (00:09):
You're listening to a podcast from News Talks EDB. Follow
this and our wide range of podcasts now on iHeartRadio.
This is Sportsfix Howard by News Talks EDB.

Speaker 2 (00:21):
Hello there, and welcome into the Sports Fix podcast for Monday,
May the twelfth. I'm Jason Pine here in association with GJ.
Gardner Holmes, New Zealand's most trusted home builder. What a
morning for gold fans around New Zealand watching Ryan Fox
become just the ninth New Zealander to win an event

(00:41):
on the USPGA Tour. How significant is this? What does
it mean for Ryan Fox in particular the two year
exemption he's earned for all events over the next two
years on the PGA Tour. One of our golfing greats,
Greg Turner, is on the Sports Fix podcast to talk
about that. Elijah Fuel pops into the chamber as we

(01:02):
talk Super Rugby, we talk the Warriors, and we talk
Auckland FC and lots more besides.

Speaker 3 (01:07):
So let's get into in other news.

Speaker 2 (01:13):
Let's get going with some of the big sports stories
around today. Chris Wood has scored his twentieth Premier League
goal of this current football season. Gives waste What a
pass forward for what abus it? Who say super for
his goal? Then my show with the assist and the
poacher with the finish. Unfortunately, their White Skippers diving header

(01:36):
early in the second half couldn't take Nottingham Forest to victory.
They ended up drawing to two with Leicester City. Matt
Paynes pulled off one of the most dramatic wins in
recent super Cars history the Kiwi, beating championship leader Brock
Feene by point zero five seconds in Race three at
the Tasmania Super four forty last night. The result was
the sport's third closest winning marchin ever.

Speaker 4 (01:58):
Yeah, the car Acuy really held onto his thighs really well,
Like we ran four greens which helped. So it's just
unreal the battle at the end, Like once I got
through the hare and I knew I could cover him
down the back here, but we put up.

Speaker 5 (02:08):
A good fight.

Speaker 2 (02:09):
Matt Payne remains third in the overall championship standings behind
Brock Beennie and Will Brown. And frustration from Tiger's Keywy
coach Benji Marshall after his side's sixty four nil NRL
trouncing away to the Melbourne Storm conceding eleven tries.

Speaker 5 (02:25):
There's losing the game and then there's been beaten. And
we got actually beat today. Like We've got a team
that usually fights for everything and I just didn't see
the same fight. Everyone's disappointed, embarrassed, probably a few other
words you could use, but it's not good enough.

Speaker 1 (02:39):
Dissecting the sporting agenda. It's Sportsvex with Jason Pyne.

Speaker 2 (02:45):
This is the Sports Fix Podcast. Ryan Fox has become
just the ninth New Zealander to win an event on
the USPGA Tour. He's chipped in for Bertie on the
first whole of a three way sudden death playoff to
win the Myrtle Beach Classic. The victory earns him a
two year PGA Tour exemption, automatic entry into this week's
second major of the year, the PGA Championship, and one

(03:05):
point two million New Zealand dollars in prize money. One
of our golfing greats, Greg Turner, is with us to
unpack this. Greg, thanks for your time. How big a
day is this for Ryan Fox?

Speaker 5 (03:15):
Oh?

Speaker 6 (03:15):
Well, it's huge, you know. I mean, you can't under estate.
Winning on the US Tour for a start is something
that's pretty pretty special, but given his circumstances, you know,
he's had a he's only second season over there, he's
had a few battles, he's sort of been gone okay,
but only just okay. But this really does move the
dial completely. And obviously been in the PJ next week,

(03:38):
but that two year exempt and that just really freesing
up to go and will free him up to go
go and you know and really chase things and you know,
not be looking, not be looking in the rear view
view mirror so much.

Speaker 2 (03:50):
Yeah, he admitted afterwards as as you have there alluded
to that it's been a tough couple of years for him.
So how much is this a victory of resilience for
Ryan Fox among other things.

Speaker 6 (04:02):
Yeah, look, I think you can underestimate it's how it's
a just ended that quite far at US two are
playing on those courses against those guys week and week out.
It it is quite an adjustment. I mean, he's settled
in pretty well in Europe and was obviously doing really
well there, but you know, America is a different kettle
of fish. So you know, I mean he'll I mean,
it's a monkey up his back in some ways, but

(04:25):
you know, he's the sort of guy who's you know,
he's never going to be the guy that plods along
and runs fifteenth every week. When he's on, he's really on,
and and ye, you've got to take your chances when
that happens. And boy did he in style? What is
I think it was? He four under on the back nine.
I was watching with about nine holes to go, and
I thought, boy, this is an important couple of hours

(04:47):
for Ryan. But you know, it could have gone, you know,
as a log jam up the top, that could have
gone either way. But he just grabbed it by the
scraff of the neck and and good on him.

Speaker 2 (04:56):
And the very last shot that he played on their
playoff hole, chipping in for Birdie, I mean, how do
you evaluate that shot? I mean, the biggest probably of
his career.

Speaker 6 (05:08):
Yeah, possibly, you know, I don't know, in a funny way,
you're in a playoff at sort of sudden death, it's
all nothing if you like, you know, both the other
guys that had in pretty good shots, so you know,
I guess. I mean, you know, if you've got bright attitude,
you're looking at it and saying, well, it's a shot
and nothing. You know, if I could make this great.
You know, I might be out of here, but let's

(05:31):
have a go. And it wasn't a hardship, but yeah,
they're never they're never easy in sudden death.

Speaker 2 (05:39):
And before that, off the tea on that sudden death
first claff hole, it wasn't a great T shot, was
it pulled it into the left ruff. It wasn't exactly
a great lie for him for his second shot.

Speaker 6 (05:51):
Yeah, no, I mean, I mean that's where his club industry,
his strength really helps when you're out of that rough.
But yeah, he said in the in the interview afterwards,
he said he was a bit disapoint thought. He didn't
think the T shot was as bad as where it
ended up, but you know, just a muscle on the
edge of the green as he did, was a terrific shot.
But and then the icing very very matched the icing

(06:13):
on the cake to chip that one.

Speaker 2 (06:15):
In having finished his own round and as you say,
it was an excellent round. Bogie three five under four
booties on the back nine. He had to wait, didn't he,
for Harry Higgs and Mackenzie Hughes to finish their rounds
before the playoff was confirmed. What would have been going
through his head? As he waited.

Speaker 6 (06:32):
Yeah, it's a funny sort of situation because there's nothing
you can do about it. You know, you're you're, yeah,
you're it's out of your control at that stage. I mean,
you've got it in your mind that you might be
in a playoff. You're probably thinking it won't be you know,
you're preparing yourself for the worst and hoping for the best.
But you know, he got out there and hit a
few balls and you know, and yeah, I mean it

(06:55):
wasn't too long the wait, was it. He probably had
half an hour maybe, so yeah, regrouped and yeah, and
I mean they'd all played pretty well. I think there
were three under four hundred and five under for the day,
so they're all, you know, they're all in good chope.
It's a bit of a Yeah, it's a it's a
bit of a toss up in a playoff, isn't it.
But you boy, good on him, and who knows what

(07:19):
the rest of you're bin.

Speaker 4 (07:20):
Yeah.

Speaker 2 (07:21):
I felt it for McKenzie Hughes. He had had a
part to win it, hadn't he On eighteen which he
missed that center to a playoff. He had a part
which was closer than the other two to win the
playoff hole as well. Do you think the mist part
to win the whole thing would have been playing on
his mind as he crouched over the put in on
the first playoff hole.

Speaker 6 (07:40):
You know, I think he's I mean, I think they
move on past that. You think you're thinking about it now,
But yeah, you've got to stay in the present. And
I mean, he's a good player. He's won a couple
of times on the on the US too, so he's
not un accustomed to that situation. But yeah, I mean,
looking back on it now, it's sort of ruining that
you had your chances and you didn't take them. And

(08:02):
of course Fox is in completely opposite this, and he's
looking back, Wow, you know, I sort of had a
chance and I grabbed it by the scruff. Kick and
on and upward.

Speaker 2 (08:12):
And just to finish, you talked before about the freedom
that the two year tour exemption will give him. Can
you discive us a bit of an idea of what
of what he can now do with the freedom of
the exemption.

Speaker 6 (08:24):
Wells, it just means you're not looking in the rear view.
You know, you're not you're not having to protect you know,
you're sort of person if you like it, so you
can just go out there and play and play the
schedule you want to play, and you know we are
with a view on how how well can I do
and and you know what can I add to that
rather than having in the back of your mind you know,

(08:46):
I've got to play, to play quite a lot just
to make sure I keep my playing right. So you know,
that just puts them in a different kettle. Feel. Will
take him a couple of weeks probably to get his
head around that. He's off to quite hollow tomorrow and
you know that'll be fresh in his mind. But yeah, boy,
it's made the rest of the season a lot simpler
the schedule.

Speaker 2 (09:06):
Indeed, it will great day for Ryan Fox, great day
for the game of golf. Here, Greg, that's so much
for your time. That is Greg Turner joining us on
the sports Fix podcast Sportsvex.

Speaker 4 (09:16):
Well.

Speaker 2 (09:16):
After the weekend's elimination finals, we know who Auckland FC
will face in the A League semi finals. Melbourne Victory
are the team who they will face home and away
for a place in the A League Men's Grand Final
over King's Birthday weekend. The away leg is first. That
is this coming Saturday night the following Saturday back home

(09:37):
at go Media Stadium to try and complete the job.
Now there's no away goals, none of that nonsense. Basically,
it's the aggregate over the two legs. If it's even
after the second set of ninety minutes, we've got extra time,
them penalties. Let's hope it doesn't come to that. The
interesting part of the first leg is just how Auckland
FC will approach it, because when the final whistle blows

(09:59):
on Saturday night in Melbourne, it's effectively only half time.
The job is only half done. So what do you
want to come home? What would be a great result,
What would be a good result, what would be a
bad result. Well, you can say win, loss, draw, across
those things. I reckon if you offered it to Steve
Coricker right now, he would bite your hand off for

(10:21):
a draw. He'd say, Look, if we can draw away
on Saturday night against Melbourne victory, I'll bring that back
home knowing that a win on home soil at go
Media Stadium in front of a jam packed home support
is what we'll do and that might be quite a
good strategy. However, Auckland FC, don't strike me as a

(10:42):
part the bus type of side. They rarely don't appeal
to me as a team that's going to go over
there on Saturday night and just sit and try and
soak up ninety minutes of pressure from a very very
talented Melbourne Victory team. They've shown an ability to defend
very very well across the twenty six games of the
regular season, but what they've also shown is an ability

(11:05):
to soak up pressure and then hit teams at the
other end. It was only three weeks ago they were
in Melbourne against Melbourne Victory, the team do'll face across
these semi final matches and they won two nil in
what is generally regarded as one of their better performances
of the season. Look, if they bite your hand off
for a drawer, they would absolutely chomp it off for
a two nil win. Let's see how they approach it

(11:27):
on Saturday night. But don't forget when that final whistle
blows just before midnight, it is only half time.

Speaker 1 (11:34):
The Chamber is now in session on Sportsfix.

Speaker 2 (11:39):
On the Sports Fix podcast. The Chamber a very popular
part of the podcast and particularly on a Monday, where
it is the People's Chamber featuring a larj a few
who joins us now, big sporting weekend. They all seem
to be Elijah. You would have enjoyed the Warriors winning
a fourth straight game. It was a bit of tight
one fifteen fourteen. Again, I know they're not your team necessarily,

(12:00):
so maybe you can look at it with an objective eye.
Why the Warrior is going so well at the moment.

Speaker 3 (12:06):
Well, I'm not too sure. There's a lot of fact
that this one.

Speaker 7 (12:09):
I'll say this the Warriors fans, if they don't have
gray hairs by now, after all the stress that their
sides put them through over the last month or so,
then I wouldn't consider yourself a true Warriors fan. But
in terms of the side, I think they're showing glimpses
of that twenty twenty three run where they were able
to win out in close games. They've managed to do
just enough at the back end of games where if

(12:30):
a team is, you know, riding a wave of momentum
and trying to make a comeback, then the Warriors do
just enough. Usually it's with their defense where them managed
to hold off and stop that wave of momentum and
managed to pull out the victory. So I think glimpses
of twenty twenty three are starting to comeback. But again
this is a whole new squad and twenty twenty five
and it's great to see them thriving and second on

(12:50):
the NRAL ladder.

Speaker 2 (12:51):
Yeah, you've picked up on something that's really interesting to me,
and that is their ability to win games by single
figure margins, which means that you know, at various stages
going towards the end of those games, they are tight
and can go the other way. And I can think
of half a dozen examples last year of the Warriors
losing by a single figure margin. The latest example on
the weekend of fifteen fourteen win they beat the Cowboys

(13:13):
thirty twenty six over Magic Round. The twenty eighteen went
over the Broncos. They beat the Tigers twenty six to
twenty four. These are games they probably would have lost
at least some of last year, Elijah.

Speaker 7 (13:24):
And even if you look around the rest of the NRL,
there are teams who usually they hold a big lead.
I'll just use this pass round for example. You know
you had the Knights Titans game and the Bulldogs Raiders
games where you know one team was up by double
digits and the other team would come back and make
a huge comeback. But with the Warriors, they managed to
do just enough again to hold them off. And I

(13:45):
think someone like Luke Metcalf and Sanew Harris Seveta, those
that halves Peering, despite being you know, the new full
time halves peering, they're showing a lot of confidence in
their ability to be clutched in those particular moments and
a lot of I guess they're managing to handle that
pressure quite well.

Speaker 2 (14:04):
Now, just before we move from the Warriors, just a
question for you about the return imminent turns of Roger
two with us A Sheck and James Fisher Harris. We
saw Delan what Tennis a leason, He had come back
onto the wing on the weekend, but you know they
shuffled things and you know Rocker Berry wasn't available from
the previous week, so there are injuries that allowed Dellan
to come back in When James Fisher, Harris and Roger

(14:26):
too with us A check come back, do you say
do you say, hey, guys, we're actually known, Okay, you've
got to buy your time or are they too high
quality for that?

Speaker 3 (14:35):
I think for guys like Rts and jfh.

Speaker 7 (14:38):
You know, those are two high quality guys that you
can't really keep out of your best seventeen.

Speaker 3 (14:44):
I mean, I'm glad I'm not the Warrior's coach. I'm
glad I'm not.

Speaker 7 (14:46):
Andrew Webster making these decisions. But I would personally go
with the high quality side because the regardless of what
the personnel is, the game plan is always going to
stay the same. The base of the platform that the
Warriors have set for themselves the last month or so,
the last couple of months is always going to be there,
no matter what the personnel is going to be. So
I would actually stick with whoever the best guys are,

(15:08):
and that would be for me Roger and James f showis.

Speaker 2 (15:10):
Let's go to Super rugby where the Chiefs were nineteen
three down in christ Church against the Crusaders the other
night and scored thirty two unanswered points to win it
thirty five nineteen. Is this a championship winning Chiefs side?
Are we willing to say that yet?

Speaker 3 (15:27):
I would.

Speaker 7 (15:28):
I'm willing to say that, especially if Katon mcmillon's going
to make his players sit in silence and listen to
the other team, you know, as they did down in
Wellington with the Hurricanes game, make them sit in science
and listen to the victory song. I'm not sure if
Clayson did something similar at halftime against the Crusaders, but
it seems to have worked because they managed to come
back and pull off a big one down in christ Church,
which is not easy to do. And I guess when

(15:49):
you look at the run home, they've now entering a
bye week in their final two games or against more
on a PACIFICA and the Highlanders, which you would expect
the Chiefs to potentially get bonus point wins out of
those two contests. And yeah, I would safely say that
they can lock in that top seed, and I'd even
go as far as to say that they'd be in
the final this point.

Speaker 2 (16:08):
Yeah, I was convinced by them on Saturday night, and
then they've had a few stumbles. I was at the
Hurricanes game that they lost, and they themselves in that
game conceded twenty six unanswered points in the second half
before they had to listen to that Hurricanes victory song.
They also lost to the war Retars three or four
rounds ago. But yeah, from what I saw the other

(16:30):
night was championship pedigree for the Crusaders. Elijah, I don't know.
Is it just a bit of a speed wobble. They've
won their previous four games, They've got the war Retars,
the Highlanders and the Brumbies to play. Are we still
saying the Crusaders will be the other team in the
top two with the Chiefs.

Speaker 7 (16:51):
It's a bit tricky now for the Crusaders, I'd say,
especially given those I think there's two games against the
Waratars and the Brumbies, especially the Brumbies who are contending
with the Crusaders for that second spot, that's gonna be
quite stricky, And especially now with Bill Jordan potentially being sidelined.
I'm not sure how long he'll be out for, but
he's been such a key cog for this Crusaders attack

(17:12):
this season and losing him, regardless of how long, it
is going to be a big loss for the Crusaders.
So I think we'll see now from this point onwards
what their metal is like at this point of the season,
towards the back end towards the playoffs.

Speaker 2 (17:25):
Yeah, and that Brumby's Crusaders game is in Canberra, isn't it,
So it could well be a shootout for a top
two spot come the end of May. Or right, just
quick word on Auckland f C. I've already given my
thoughts on how I think the Auckland FC team should
attack this one against Melbourne Victory on Saturday night and
across the two legs. Are you confident as an Auckland

(17:45):
FC fan that your team's got enough to get past
Melbourne victory.

Speaker 3 (17:50):
I'd hope so.

Speaker 7 (17:51):
But I had a similar confidence last season when the
Phoenix played against Melbourne and they took that real conservative
approach in that first leg and the second league obviously
didn't go their way in the end. But I am
HOPINGFC comes out firing. I think they've got the guys,
they've got the defense to you know, again, hold off
that wave of momentum if the victory come back at them.

(18:12):
But I do hope to see Auckland sort of come
out fire and not please play it's who's safe because
that return leg backhand Mount Smarter is going to be crucial.
But yeah, a near a confidence, I'd say when it
comes to Black Nights.

Speaker 2 (18:25):
What a weekend we've got coming up on the twenty
fourth and twenty fifth of May. It go media because
Aukland FC played Melbourne victory there on the Saturday night
and twenty four hours later it's the Warriors against Canberra
looking for revenge from Vegas. I said on the radio
yesterday I might just pull up a bed and stay
the weekend at Go Media.

Speaker 3 (18:43):
Yeah.

Speaker 7 (18:44):
I might need a couple more monitors in the screens pioneers,
so yeah, I'll have to invest in those and maybe
some yes and more bedding as well.

Speaker 2 (18:51):
Brilliant stuff, great to tat and the chamber is always Elijah.
Will do it again next Monday.

Speaker 3 (18:54):
