fan worth Yeah.

Speaker 2 (01:10):
I know, but I know from listening to him chat
to you in the past that he appreciates the work
you put into what I mean, your long association with motorsport.

answers to and he always delivers.

So it's the combine.

around today. Football's Europa League champions have been crowned in Spain.

Speaker 3 (01:50):
Glory glory to the hot sports have con cut it
at last, un pasta Cocku has delivered has.

Speaker 2 (02:01):
He promised he would, Tottenham beating Manchester United one nil
in the final In Bill Baum seven's World Series Player

Blackburn's fifteens have welcomed her into the fold. The twenty
one year old as part of the side contesting the
Pack four series in a bid to press her claims
for World Cup selection.

Speaker 3 (02:20):
Similar to our sevens group, this team really emphasizes the
environment and the culture, you know, in the dying minutes.

Speaker 2 (02:25):
I think that's what it comes down to.

Speaker 3 (02:27):
Are you're going to work hard for the player beside you,
for your teammate.

Speaker 4 (02:30):
And to the women's eight hundred meter free style.

Speaker 2 (02:44):

Speaker 4 (02:47):
Say eight hundred hats.

Speaker 3 (02:48):
He finishes an eight twenty white sixty.

Speaker 1 (02:50):
Seven dissecting the sporting agenda. It's Sportsfix with Jason Vine
and Darcy Waldgrave.

Speaker 3 (02:58):
And it will welcome to the Sports Fixed podcast to
Scott Dixon, IndyCar multi championship winner, who's attempting the brickyard
yet again. It's been a couple of decades here. Scott
must be like sliding into a comfortable old pair of shoes.

Speaker 5 (03:17):
I wouldn't say that it's never comfortable, you know. I
think that's you know, what keeps it so fresh is
that it's forever changing, right, and the target's always different.
So this year definitely some you know, some you know changes.
I think Whea, there will be a lot cooler than
what we've seen in the past. TIH degradation seems to
be up, you know, just because the weight of the hybrid,
and you know, failure is a little bit up as well.

(03:38):
I think that we've seen in the first few races
this year. So you know, it's never never the same,
and the competition always changes as well. You know, we're
a lot in a lot better place this year, so
looking forward to you know, having a real good cracket
at this this this Sunday.

Speaker 3 (03:52):
So it looks like the number nine car rolled out
of the truck, as they say, in pretty good neck.
What can you tell us about the way the vehicle
has been handling with the changes we had to make, Scott.

Speaker 5 (04:03):
Yeah, I think race stuff has been probably the more favorable.
You know, Qualifying was definitely a nice surprise this year.
I think last year was kind of a good reset
for us. You know, none of us, with all five
cars made it to the fast twelve. You know, that
was definitely pretty frustrating considering I think the last you know,
four or five years, one of us and the team
had kind of been fighting for the pole and had

(04:24):
captured the pole many of those times as well, So
you know, it was a good wake up call, you know, refocused,
especially kind of the advanced engineering group and you know,
everybody that's involved in that process. And you know, Alex
and I made it to the fast six, you know,
second row. You know, we're starting fourth, he's starting six.
You know, I think Keiftin's starting thirteenth. Probably, you know,

(04:45):
we would have loved to have been fighting for the poll,
but definitely, you know, I'm seventeen spots already better than
it was last year. So that's that's definitely a nice surprise.
So yeah, carsp has been great. I think the long
runs have been really good. But you never really know,
I think, and once you know, until you get into
the thick of it in the race and see how
your speed really is.

Speaker 3 (05:03):
Huge amount of joy around the pits for Robert Schwartzman,
his family and his team as well. Of of course
he's a rookie and he's got pole position. Good Yeah,
it was. It was cool.

Speaker 5 (05:14):
You know, it's a new team with Prema. Obviously they've
got a storied history, but you know, mostly in Europe,
and you know, Robert himself being a rookie out of
the gate, you know, is fantastic to see. And you
know a lot of actually Excanassi people there. You know,
Ryan Briscoe and X teammate of mine has actually been

(05:35):
helping Schwartzmand quite a bit there as well. So really
happy for that group. It was definitely a bit of
a shock I think on Saturday qualifying because when we
all watched the run, we're like, wow, that was really fast,
you know, considering that he wasn't even flat in any
of the corners and the car just had amazing speed,
and that would be true, you know once we got
to the fast twelve and then to the fast six.

(05:55):
You know, I don't think he did a single lap
that was that was flat and still had you know,
crazy speed, whereas you know, for us, I think we
would have crumbled a but have we been in that situation.
So you know, kudos to them, and it's really really
really cool to see and a great storyline, especially going
into the race.

Speaker 3 (06:11):
Okay, so where does that extra speed come from? I
don't know.

Speaker 5 (06:16):
It's yeah, even car, but we study a lot of
that stuff, you know, whether it's a lot of photos
and all that kind of stuff just to see car
build and you know things that they're maybe doing different
and yeah, nothing surprising. But the surprising part was was
that car was definitely fast race running. You know, they've
been struggling a little bit more. But you know, if
you've got you know, good pace out of the car,
that's definitely half your battle. I think going into the

(06:38):
five hundred.

Speaker 3 (06:39):
One of the usual suspects to Koma Sato front row
of the grid. It's picked up and when there are
a couple of times what is it about Tacoma Sato
and ndy five hundred? He loves that place, yeah for sure.

Speaker 5 (06:52):
And you know, you would say the rest of his
teammates have been struggling a little bit. You know Sato
who we had as a teammate, was it last year
or the year before? You know, as a motto goes
no technical chance, and that definitely, you know, you know,
plays out at that place for sure. He was the
quickest Honda. You know, I think that was a bit

(07:12):
of a shock to us. You know, just even even
in you know, the Fast Sex, they weren't very trimmed,
so you know, they weren't aggressive on you trimming that
carrat and going for straight line speed and you know
they were they were definitely fast. We were pretty close
to them, I think within a few tents a mile hour.
But you know, he did definitely did a fantastic job
and studying what is the middle of the front row.

(07:35):
So yeah, he'll be tough to be ready for change.

Speaker 3 (07:38):
One last thing, Scott Dixon then, as always, thanks very
much for sharing some time with us and the listeners.
Let's talk about the controversy of the week, the attenuated
situation with Team Penske. It's only a tiny adjustment, but
it's still illegal and they've been absolutely slapped for that.

(07:58):
Were you surprised to see this, Yeah, it's not.

Speaker 5 (08:03):
You know, I think the you know, the hard part
is the legitimacy of the sport, right you know, it's
it's already magnified because you know, Roger Penske owns the
Indy five hundred of the circuit. You know, he owns
a team that races competitively in the IndyCar Series, which
he already owns and owns the engine supplier that makes

(08:24):
the engines for you know, GM, So it's a tricky
situation for them anyway, and they have to be squeaky clean,
and you know, unfortunately it didn't play out that way.
And you know, I think off the back side of
what happened last year with you know, their overtake penalties
and you know, doing something kind of blatantly illegal there

(08:44):
as well. So it's not a good look, you know,
and it's frustrating for the sport just in general, and
frustrating for team owners and everybody that's involved, you know,
and you know, you can see some of the reaction
that's come from it, you know, with some of the
penalties that they've been handed and you know, plus I
think today where they fired you know, three of you know,
Penske employees. So yeah, it's just it kind of unfortunately,

(09:07):
you're probably to talking more about that than you know,
a rookie Schwartzman getting the poll for the biggest race
in the world. So you know, hopefully they can they
can clean it up, and you know, unfortunately they're just
going to be under the magnify big time now horsfix
this weekend.

Speaker 3 (09:24):
Ak FC, arch Effeca, Auckland Football Club or whatever you
want to call them, are going to be on the
cusp of qualifying for the A League Grand Final. And
Dan Hall we've got a guy who's been there, done
that a couple of times. But you can't get too
ahead of yourself. It's all about the ninety minutes that
are coming up on well, i'd say early Saturday evening

(09:47):
or late Saturday afternoon. Dealing with loss is a fascinating
part of sport for me. The psychological aspect of playing
the game is so important at that top level. Yet
you've got to have the talent to have the skills,
got the physicality. The list goes on, but what goes
on upstairs, that horse pa that you have and all

(10:10):
athletes and coaches have, needs to be highly tuned and
focused on the game. The big thing for me is
that mostly teams and players lose. It's an inevitability of
sport that you lose. When you go into a big tournament,
there's a very high chance you won't win the trophy.

(10:32):
When you're competing at an Olympic level, there's a very
good chance you won't win gold. The ability for players
to lean into that pain. Understand that shadow of loss
and how they're willing to carry that is enormous for me.
Recognize it, embrace it. Understand it's possible that things will

(10:54):
not go your way. The other player, the other team
will go on an absolute tear, the referee might be
up against you. You just don't know. But the preparedness
for loss, I believe, is a huge part of a
very strong mental attitude in any team or athlete. I
don't want to talk about it. They don't want to

(11:15):
consider that it might happen, but it does and it can.
And if you're not comfortable in that space, I don't
think you can move forward to the promised Land.

Speaker 1 (11:27):
The Chamber is now in session on Sportsfax.

Speaker 2 (11:32):
Enter the Chamber, we go. What a great joy listening
to Scott Dixon. Let's hope we can continue the joy
inside the chamber. Can we start with David HARVILLI he
has today extended I'm sure this happened a little while ago,
but it's been announced today. He has extended with the
Crusaders and New Zealand Rugby until after the next World
Cup in twenty twenty seven. David Harvilly very very good,

(11:54):
rugby player for you, darsto, what is his role to
play in the All Blacks between now and Rugby World
Cup twenty twenty seven and including that tournament.

Speaker 3 (12:03):
I think that David Havelli is the salidity he provides
in midfield and the ability to move and about to
provide cover all over the shop was really really important.
But we don't know who the midfield's going to be,
who they're going to lean with and how that's going
to work. When you look at someone like Billy Proctor
who would like to see him and he might be
helping him out. But as far as a sage, if

(12:24):
you will, someone who's been there, done that and had
the experience, I think that role in the team shouldn't
be underestimated.

Speaker 2 (12:32):
It's really interesting to me because I watched David Harvili.
I was lucky enough to be sideline when the Crusaders
came to Eden Park earlier in the season and absolutely
dealt to the Blues. And I watched David harvillly close
up and you find out a lot about people when
you're down on that sideline and just the amount of
talking that he does he had, you know, a fairly
inexperienced couple of players inside him in Taha Kimta, and

(12:53):
I'm pretty sure Cayle Preston was the half back that night,
So you know, nowhere near the super rugby experience that
David harvillly has, but he was the glue in that
back line. But I look at the midfield riches, at
the disposal of Scott Robertson, and in the second position,
we know we've got Jordi Barrett coming back of course
from Ireland this year, and I think you know, I
don't think there's much argument that he'll be in the

(13:15):
All Blacks picture. You mentioned Billy proc to there, Quintupia
has had a very good season. So I just wonder
where David Harvilly fits into all of the stars.

Speaker 3 (13:25):
Well pointed out he fits where he can. When he's not,
I don't think it a start, but he'll be very
valuable and bench and very valuable in other games that
aren't quite as important. Don't to downplay what he does,
but he can do anything, and that is so valuable.
And of course Scott Robertson knows what he's capable of,

(13:47):
so he'll be all over him like a rash.

Speaker 2 (13:48):
Right, yeah, absolutely right, And and I think that utility
position in the last little wile's been Anton Lennett Brown's,
hasn't it. He can play twelve and thirteen, but David
Harvey can also play but a fallback played some first
five last year through utility and like a guy I
think within a team environment. Who anybody you talked about
David Harvilly is just glowing in their praise of the
way he is inside a team environment. So yep, agreat

(14:10):
good to have me for another couple of years. Big
part of the Crusaders and the All Blacks moving forward.
Warriors Canberra Raiders Sunday. The Warriors will go into this
game without either of their co captains James Fisher Harris
is suspended and Mitch Barnett is on Origin duty. When
you lose your co captains, both of them, how big

(14:31):
a hole does that leave?

Speaker 3 (14:33):
There's a hole, but I don't know if it's an
enormous hole. You remember fessher Harris been out for a
while and he has come back again. So I think
the influence he has off the field, and that's all
you hear about when you talk about players from the
Panthers and they reflect on what he brought to the side.
So much of it was in the gym, so much
was in the training off field. That's a lot of

(14:54):
what he brings, not saying he can't perform the part
because he does, so I think they'll deal with that. Okay,
we got to celebrate man it, I mean, magnificent, Go Mitch.
It's fantastic news for him. But we've got a guy
inmed Kurt Caple, who's he's improved and he's entrusted with
the role. He can play all over the shop. And
I don't know if it'll be that brutal for the

(15:16):
Warriors to miss those guys. It might even be quite
a counter move in the fact they'll lift because they
know they haven't got that leadership. Or is that a
bit out of the ordinary?

Speaker 4 (15:26):
No, I get what you're saying, and they're not.

Speaker 2 (15:28):
But then I also look at the team and I think, well,
hang on, there's a couple of fairly experienced guys there.
Roger too iv as a check for one who you
know has been around for a very very long time.
Wade Egan is another. You don't necessarily does have to
have an armband to lead, do you No?

Speaker 3 (15:43):
And you look at the all black situation where it
looks like because the all Black team is being announced,
funny that and tut a nucky at the club of
the Barrett. So you're presuming that the captain's going to
be Scott, right, it's going to carry on with that.
But talk about Artie Savia and whether she'd have the
role within the side. Artie Savia is a monster. He
does so much. Hasn't got the armband, but I don't

(16:03):
know if that entirely matters. More we've seen for the
Warriors this year, everybody looks like the stand out the
whole team from the young'ins great to have two of
those young and sign long term as well, right the
way through to the old school. I'm not that concerned.
But it is two v three and it is the NRL.

Speaker 4 (16:21):
Yeah, and it's a massive game.

Speaker 2 (16:22):
It's a massive game and I can't wait to cap
the weekend with it six o'clock on Sunday night, just
before we exit the chamber.

Speaker 4 (16:29):
Tottenham have won some silverware. They have won the.

Speaker 2 (16:32):
Europa League, beating Manchester United one dylln bill bow. It
qualifies them for the Champions League next year. Despite the
fact there's seventeenth.

Speaker 4 (16:40):
And the Premier League does well.

Speaker 3 (16:42):
I get tied up with early rags, but you're all
about the sweaty jock straps when it comes to football.
So where does this come from? I want? Seventeen years
since the title in Manchester United is still flailing? Is
this the bottom? Are they now lying in the gutter
and looking at the stars?

Speaker 4 (16:59):
I think, man you are.

Speaker 2 (17:00):
The crazy thing is is that Angepasta Cooglu, the boss
of Tottenham, is still really in doubt to carry on
as Tottenham boss, even though he's just delivered them, you know,
the Europa League, which is the second tier European competition
below the Champions League. With it comes, as I say,
the qualification next year's Champions League. But his very ordinary

(17:22):
Premier League season has a lot of people worried. And
I'd say that it's absolutely no foregone conclusion that Angepasta
Conglu will lead that side next season. It's such an
odd thing to say when they've just lifted a piece
of self aware but that's the way football goes. There
tends to beat us a certain amount of instant gratification
mentality around it.

Speaker 3 (17:41):
Yeah, well that instantaneous all that move though slightly long
term and when the level of excitement has died down
the gay accident and you're off.

Speaker 4 (17:50):
See yeah, well that may well happen. Isn't that weird?
Isn't that strange?

Speaker 2 (17:54):
Anyway? For now, Spurs fans, and we all know a
Spurs fan, a long suffering Spurs fan, they can celebrate
today with the Europa.

Speaker 4 (18:01):
League in their trophy cabinet for the next twelve months.
And that is us in the chamber for today.

Speaker 1 (18:07):
We've got just the get it's Sportsfix how by News
Talks V.

Speaker 4 (18:12):
I've been to part of the chamber.

Speaker 2 (18:14):
We have no more to give, certainly not on this
edition of the Sports Fix podcast anyway, but we will
give you a fresh edition around about the same time
tomorrow if that works for you does.

Speaker 3 (18:22):
Yeah, And we kind of multitasking because we also give
you the opportunity to ring through or text through with
your thoughts. That is Sports Talk between seven and eight
Monday to Friday. Piney's got Monday, I've got the rest.
And of course, Piney, what do you do on the weekend?

Speaker 2 (18:37):
We can it's called Weekend Sport. I do it from
twelve till three and can I just give a quick
plug to our show on Saturday with the A League
Finals Semifinal rather Saturday night at Go Media. We're going
to bring the show to you from Tyler Street, Sport
on Saturday. So fairly firm Football Focus midday to three
on Saturday. They're back in the studio on Sunday dusk.

Speaker 3 (18:56):
That was so radio A fairly firm football Focus. You
alliterate your way to the stars. Good on your piney,
have a cracking day.

Speaker 4 (19:04):
See you tomorrow mate.
