Speaker 2 (00:21):
Hello there and welcome into the Sports Fixed podcast. It
is Thursday, the fifth of June. We're here in association
with G. J. Gardner Holmes, New Zealand's most trusted home builder.
It is a pleasure to be one meter from my
co host. I'm Jason Pine.
Speaker 3 (00:36):
My name is Darcy Watergrave. Piney is up in thirty
ak up in the O nine. Pine.
Speaker 2 (00:41):
Yes, it's good to be here in the own nine.
Always enjoy a trip up, particularly because we get to
spend time in such close proximity, which which we're going
to do. Get off me in the chamber in a
little while talking about ins and outs and super rugby
and a possible twenty fifth Grand Slam for Novak Djokovic.
We have a rugby guest today, Yeah, Josh Lord.
Speaker 3 (01:02):
A guy who's been decimated by injury over the years,
but he won't go, aren't. He keeps on coming back.
He's coming off the bench for the Chiefs in the
Battle of the Bomb Bay. That is going to be huge,
Like if the Chiefs lose it, they still have a chance,
but there's no way. As I found out yesterday talking
to Rob Penny, losses have consequences, so no one wants
(01:24):
to It's gonna be huge.
Speaker 2 (01:25):
Yeah, absolutely right, Josh Wad on the podcast and the
later sports news as well. So let's get into it.
In other news, let's get underway with some of the
big sports stories around today. Tennis great Novak Djokovic isn't
counting out winning a record extending twenty fifth Men's Grand
Slam crown. He's through to the French Open semi finals
(01:45):
after a four set takedown of Alexander's Veria.
Speaker 4 (01:48):
Who decision for good in Geneva.
Speaker 5 (01:49):
So, of course the hundred win and the way I
won the tournament definitely helped me mentally approach Roland Garros
in a better way.
Speaker 2 (01:57):
Former Black Caps player and coach John Bracewell is back
in New Zealand Crickets call to stick with an all
format coach. He says splitting the role between red and
white ball with New Zealand's relatively small catchment of athletes,
brings its own danger.
Speaker 6 (02:11):
That competition for players could create an environment of corruption,
and by that I mean favoring players to keep them
in one format and not necessarily the other, and then
forcing players to make unnecessary decisions in regards for that.
Speaker 2 (02:26):
And the timeline's being set for Warriors co captain Mitch
Barnett's returned to play. He needs surgery on his acl
after a rupture against the rabbit Os. Here's coach Andrew Webster.
Speaker 5 (02:36):
In that situation, you're really get the swelling down and
you actually got to get the movement before you do
the operation. As soon as that happens, he can have it.
That's roughly basically a nine to twelve month process, depending
on the individual and how they really have for their
So all goes well, we could have in buffer around one.
Speaker 1 (02:49):
Next year use and a villion. It's Sportsfix with Jason
Pine and Dussie Walter Grave.
Speaker 3 (02:57):
Massive game of football coming up over the weekend. In fact,
there are a few, but when it comes to the
Battle of the bomb Base, this is it. They come
south to the Blues to take on the Chiefs at home.
It's all on the line and a man's coming off
the bench, a guy who's represented the All Blacks got
a big future. He's had a few problems with injuries,
(03:19):
but he's back now because never his name is Josh Lord,
Josh welcome to the program.
Speaker 4 (03:25):
She's all go, mate, knock out footy now. So it's
pretty exciting time of the season, and obviously we've got
a big game coming up against the Blues, which will
be Yeah. I said it's gonna be a big game
and it'll be bloody tough.
Speaker 3 (03:38):
You're probably sick to death of people asking about your
carcass and how that's hanging in knee and knee and
the like as well, but considering the record you've had
with injury of recent times, we have big interest in it.
Are you hanging together?
Speaker 6 (03:49):
Okay?
Speaker 3 (03:50):
Is everything a hundi?
Speaker 4 (03:52):
Yeah, buddies are feeling pretty good at the moment. Touch Wood,
So yeah, Minister strength to get a few games this year,
which is probably the most I've played in quite a while,
I think since twenty twenty two. So yeah, I'm pretty happy,
pretty happy being available for the team and doing what
I can to help us. You know, look towards the
opportunity of lifting that title at the end.
Speaker 3 (04:14):
We had that massive acl a couple of years back,
didn't you, And you manage to get back into the fold.
So when you beat yourself up again for your last
knee injury, what went through your mind and that happened?
It must have been pretty grim.
Speaker 4 (04:26):
Josh, Yeah, it was pretty frustrating, to be honest, But
I gave myself a day or two to have a
stalk about it. But you can't talk about it too
long or well you get up left behind. So yeah,
like I've got a good support to stem around me
as well, and very good medics and physios here at
(04:46):
the Chiefs. I've spent a bit of time with them
and I sent them pretty well.
Speaker 3 (04:52):
Playing back for the Chiefs again and what they've achieved.
What your first back going back was up against the Force?
That went reasonably well. You guys put on a mountain
of points from what I remember.
Speaker 4 (05:05):
Yeah, that was a good old game. Boys played well.
It's pretty wicked to be at Oval and he had
a pretty awesome crowd, which is pretty awesome for super
rugby and it's good for the French as as well.
In order the supporters to come out.
Speaker 3 (05:19):
You're playing with a guy called to Vai. Oh my lord,
what kind of form has that guy been in recently?
I don't know. Spinach baked beans. What's your chomping?
Speaker 4 (05:30):
He's saying fairly well, and he deserves all the eccolades
he's getting at the moment. He's very awesome for the chiefs.
He's awesome for the locks to learn off him. And yeah,
like I said before, he deserves everything because he works
bloody hard for it and he's playing good footy.
Speaker 3 (05:47):
Well, he kind of got to a very top level
on a relatively young age when you wouldn't expect it
like that, similarly with yourself, so you'd be using what
he did and how he evolved as as an example
to keep it going.
Speaker 4 (06:03):
Yeah, I guess we're some players as well. But he's
he's had to be patient with his time. He was
stuck behind two pretty awesome locks and Bodie and Sam
White Lock, and then obviously last year he took his
opportunity pretty well and he's kind of blossomed into a
urkon one of the world's best locks and probably the
best in the country at the moment, so he said,
(06:25):
and he deserves it, and he's worked boody hard for it.
He's only going to get better too.
Speaker 3 (06:30):
It's threatening. I don't want to hear that waite, what
if I'm all opposition anyway, as far as your higher honors,
you've already you've been there once. You must be pretty
hungry for more. Are you in the loop? You talked
to Razor or anyone to talk?
Speaker 4 (06:46):
Well, I like to hope I'm in the loop. But yeah,
like touch on before last few years, I've been out
quite a bit, so for me, it's just about staying
on the field and playing some consistent footy. There's some
pretty good locks around his linen at the moment, which
is pretty exciting. And yeah, like I said, I played
good footy down the field and we'll see what happens
(07:07):
in the end of the sea.
Speaker 3 (07:09):
Pretty rich right across the field, though, isn't it, he said?
A lot of good locks. There's a lot of good
players in numerous positions right across So Scott raisor Robertson
must be looking at rubbing his hands together, going here,
I've got some men here.
Speaker 4 (07:24):
Yeah, it's bloody awesome, isn't it. A lot of boys
coming back from injuries and playing good footy, young fellows
stepping up and to Rugby's somebody good this year, and
lots of boys getting opportunities and putting their hands up
for selection, which has been Yeah, like you said, that's
been pretty good.
Speaker 3 (07:42):
How do you tear the Blues a new one? Because
they were shaking like you wouldn't believe at the start
of the season and finally they've hit their stride. Now,
if I was being a miserable sign, which of course
I know it, you can look at the Chiefs and go,
you've been playing great football right to the top. If
you peaked too early? Is this a perfect clash of
a team that's been there and a team that's on
the way up?
Speaker 4 (08:05):
You look at it. I guess we know how good
the Blues are. You know, we've respected the Blues all
year and we know what they can offer. At the
end of the day, it's footy and it's about the
eighty minutes or eighty one minutes. It's going to happen
on Saturday, So we know what we're going to do
to put ourselves in good spot to hopefully get the win.
(08:27):
And yeah, we know that they'll be coming down here
and I can do the same.
Speaker 3 (08:31):
It's going to be a massive exchange in like every
game pretty much in Super Rugby Pacific so far, they've
been compulsory viewing. It's been great watching you back in
action again, getting back over that troublesome knee. You're not
gonna have any other injuries now. For years, You've done
your fair shared, Josh Lord, so consider yourself checked in
(08:51):
get amongst in course of ruckers.
Speaker 4 (08:53):
Yeah, it is, thanks very much.
Speaker 3 (08:58):
It's fair to say that I'm not a big fan
of Novak Djokovic. Yes, he is arguably the greatest of
all time, results wise, when it comes to men's Grand
Slam tennis, he's an absolute freak and he shows no
sign of stopping, no sign of slowing down. The results
haven't been there of recent times. But when I listened
(09:21):
to him in his press conference today, there was an
air of doom around him. Not doom for him, but
doom for Janick's Sinner. There was this quiet, bubbling, rolling
confidence in his voice that suggests he is not done.
Super super tough for him, Yanick Sinner and probably al
(09:42):
Chaaz in the final if he's to pick up Grand
Slam number twenty five. I don't particularly like his stance
on a number of things, and of course we saw
what happened during COVID and he wasn't allowed to compete
at the Aussie Open. Hey, but he's his own man.
He makes his own decision. Sometimes. I find him to
be a sticky character to interview. He doesn't engender a
(10:05):
lot of love. He's not a likable character like Federer
for example, or ruff A Nadell for example, or Oh,
there are plenty of other greats there as well, aren't there.
So Novak's not about that. But Novak is about playing tennis.
And I'm sure he couldn't give two hoots what people
think about him. Wouldn't care what the public, wouldn't care
(10:27):
what his opposition players, wouldn't care, especially what some two
bit sports host out of New Zealand thinks of him.
His sole focus is tennis and it is to win majors.
He is on the cusp of winning twenty five majors.
You wouldn't read about it. It would be a phenomenal achievement.
(10:50):
And even though he's not my cup of tea, there's
something about reaching such a ridiculous goal that I feel
I'm going to be cheering for him. I want to
see him do it, and it's one back for the
old guys. And let's face it, the more levels you
gain and he's at level thirty eight. Now I think
it is the more you want the older guys to succeed.
(11:14):
Get in their novak, have a great time.
Speaker 1 (11:16):
The Chamber is now in session on Sportsfax.
Speaker 2 (11:21):
Great to hear from Josh Lord. Let's now kick around
a few issues in the chamber. Do so, let's start
with Super Rugby actually and ins and outs. Your Crusaders
get Will Jordan back? How big an in is this
so due?
Speaker 3 (11:35):
Last year Jordan didn't really play at all and what
happened to the Crusaders.
Speaker 2 (11:40):
They didn't make the final.
Speaker 3 (11:41):
I'm not putting it all on him. That's manifestly unfair.
I think there are a few eyebrows raised when he
came back, but Rob Penny said no, they are ready
to go one hundred percent. And when I say they, look,
Will Jordan tremendously experienced the most ridiculous skill set. I mean,
this is the all black fullback, right you're listening rays
of this is the all black fullback. I think he does. Yeah,
let's not forget two other guys that are on the
(12:03):
way back. David Harvey, massive influence on the game. Glue
Captain Glue. He knows what goes on he's been there,
done that, and the other one is arguably the man
with the biggest motor in super rugby. Fletcher Mule comes
back to prop and I'd almost say that's almost the
biggest of all. The guy can play for eighty minutes.
(12:24):
Incredibles never eases up, so that's a clear and present danger.
All three of them are and more. This is looking
like a pretty tidy team that's coming together at the
right time.
Speaker 2 (12:35):
One percent. Yeah, Ethan Blackad are also back in the
last little while as well, and he's a big inn
as well. So Crusader's looking good. Let's got my Hurricanes
dars where Yesterday asapho On Moore was named to play
against the Brumbies on Saturday night. Today when they got
to the airport asapha more does not travel, doesn't make
the plane's oil. Well, I can only assume that they
(12:57):
just wanted to keep the Brumbies guessing for twenty four
more hours. He got a knee injury at training yesterday
the day before. It doesn't matter. He was seen during
actually ironically enough, during the open part of the session
when the media are allowed, and that was when he
was carted off on the back of a golf cart
with his knee heavily strapped. So I more won't play
on Saturday, and from what Clark Ladylaw said at the
(13:18):
airport before they did fly out, not going to play
next week either, if they make it through. So, you know,
as much as will, Jordan's a massive in for the Crusaders,
a spher one more. Maybe not quite as important to
the Hurricanes as Jordan is to the Crusades, but still
a pretty big player.
Speaker 3 (13:32):
I've loved the progression of this guy since he first
burst onto the scenes. He seems he was a winger,
built like a prop, wasn't he, And that's what he
used to do. He made a big splash then kind
of just pete it out for a while there that
now he's rerealized who he is, what he can do,
He's on the way back up. So this is this
is devastating, not only for the Canes, but for him
(13:53):
and for the All Blacks, because there's a chance.
Speaker 2 (13:55):
Right absolutely, if you peter out what happens. What's the
opposite of it? Is it darcying back in?
Speaker 3 (14:01):
Okay, let's go with that, all right. It's the returns,
It's the resurrection. His Jesus in back in Okay, we're
going to go at. It's quite a bit of local too, right,
Peter Jesus. Yeah, that's it. We're onto something here, mate.
Speaker 4 (14:14):
All right.
Speaker 2 (14:14):
As far as tennis God's are concerned, Novak Djokovic, of course,
has won twenty four Grand Slams. He's in the semi
finals of the French Open, which is the one he's
won the least off and just three of us twenty
four are French Opens. He's got Yarnick Cinner in the
semifinals and probably Carlos Alkorath in the final. That's tough.
Speaker 3 (14:31):
It is tough. But if you listen to his post
match when he finally qualified for that, there's a calmness
in that voice. There is a disturbing confidence. It's just
bubbling under. I listened to that. I've read something else.
Maybe it because I listened to audio two much and
I when this guy's a clear and present danger and
(14:53):
I'm Yanick Sinner, I'm going I'm the number one and
world I'm da da da da da, and Novak's going
hold my beer, I am. When it comes to results,
the goat this this will be huge about I've enjoyed
the whole Open so far, particularly the winds draw. I'm
really enjoying watching that. It's a shame that, you know,
beyond midnight, I can't. I just crap out so I
get to see the early matches. And there have been
(15:16):
some goodies in there last night, watching Coco goff down
in the first set, Madison Keys ground back and got it,
won the second too. Some good tennis up Sebolenka.
Speaker 2 (15:25):
Wow, she's amazing. She is well and truly worthy of
the tag of top seed in that tournament. I like
golf as well. Just back to the men's Soon has
never made the final at the French Open. He hasn't
been a round for anywhere near as long enough as Jokova.
As long as Jokovic, of course, but he's never made
the final there. Carlos Elkarez, on the other hand, has
you has won the French Open. He's the defending champion.
(15:46):
I get the feeling that whoever plays Alkarez will be
up against her. But I'm like you, does I look
at Jokovic? Was he thirty eight?
Speaker 3 (15:53):
I don't think it matters.
Speaker 2 (15:55):
No, it looks about twenty eight. What's the secret.
Speaker 3 (15:58):
It's the diet. That's what it is for himself in
top condition. But he says, I said, he's got that
there's something simmering under that voice. Gun. I am not
done yet. Twenty five is going to be.
Speaker 2 (16:08):
It's going to be mine. I am not going to
peter out. I'm going to paul in if we're going
to continue using our biblical.
Speaker 3 (16:16):
Praises appropriate than Jesus. And for anyone that offender, We're
very sorry. We didn't mean that you would. Just we're
in a chamber with each other. The air is getting
dense in here. I'm having trouble breathing. Piny.
Speaker 2 (16:27):
I think it's time for us to exit the chamber.
Speaker 3 (16:29):
Good idea leading a X.
