Speaker 4 (00:27):
Thanks for joining us. My name is Darcy water Grave.
Speaker 3 (00:29):
All you need to know about the wonderful wide world
of sport coming up in next will I know?
Speaker 4 (00:34):
Short shout shop? Maybe fifteen minutes. What have we got
on for you?
Speaker 5 (00:38):
Well?
Speaker 3 (00:38):
I'll be joined by Colin Mansbridge. He's the CEO of
the Crusaders. This is very interesting discussion around to cow
Bell or not to cow Bell?
Speaker 4 (00:49):
Who said no? And why?
Speaker 3 (00:52):
The magnificent Christopher Eve aka kel L joined us out
of the New Zealand Herald newsroom to talk about some
of the big issues today in sport, and of course
I'll throw in my opinion around Willy Milly about whenever
I see ft or thanks to the fine folks GJ.
Gardner Holmes, new Zealand's most trusted homebuilder.
Speaker 4 (01:13):
Where's do this?
Speaker 3 (01:14):
In other news, Let's take a listen to what's on
the minds of the sportspeople and theing some today. The
origin pie fight had Surround two in Perth tonight after
getting owned by a new South Wales in the first exchange.
Queensland need to sort out their on field issues as
opposed to getting into Verbrus his Maroon's coach Billy Slater
(01:38):
firing back at Aaron Woods, who called Billy a grubb
and sitting radio. You don't know what people are going
through and although I might be able to handle it,
the next.
Speaker 6 (01:47):
Person might be. Maybe our last coach didn't.
Speaker 3 (01:50):
He was referencing Paul Green that we apologized today though
over that reference. I feel terrible about what I said,
and I spoke to Amanda Green this morning and apologized
for any hurt that it may have caused her and
her family. Olympics BRender Hobbes bolted home to win in
(02:10):
Finland were the year's best eleven point oh seven good omen.
Speaker 4 (02:14):
For September's World Champs.
Speaker 5 (02:17):
Right, I felt like the start was going that on
and I could have relaxed a little more towards the
endb We're still in June, we're working towards September. Overall,
there's some things that I could take away and work on.
So knowing that this is not to work on gets
me confidence.
Speaker 3 (02:29):
And Silver Ferns vice captain Kate Harpon and has had
tentative conversations with Australian Super Nepal franchises, but he's staying put.
Speaker 4 (02:38):
To wear the black dress. More eligibility dramas.
Speaker 3 (02:43):
Those eligibility rules have definitely made it hard for many
of us, and there has been conversations, but it's sort
of been hard to really hate them anywhere.
Speaker 4 (02:51):
The sports stars said it were just hit record.
Speaker 2 (02:55):
UCAD it's Sportsfix with Dancie valde Greve.
Speaker 3 (03:01):
It would appear that the franchise sending over a substandard
rugby team for the June Internationals.
Speaker 7 (03:08):
This was.
Speaker 4 (03:11):
This was not exactly a secret.
Speaker 3 (03:13):
Everybody here in New Zealand figured that due to the
dominant nature of the top French rugby clubs and their
Top fourteen competition, they simply wouldn't be able to access
their best players who are playing our semi final this week,
they're playing a final the week after, and they're not
really sure if the players can handle the jandle after
(03:35):
a very very aggressive competition.
Speaker 4 (03:38):
Your parliament are plane, you bring them to New Zealand.
Speaker 3 (03:40):
Only to be beaten up by the All Blacks. I
think we understand that. I think we get that. Look,
it's a case by case basis. There's a chance some
of their better players will be given dispensation and they'll
come over to take on the All Blacks in their
own backyard. Whatever happens. The bigger picture is this twofold one.
(04:02):
The clubs are all powerful in international rugby union. No
they're not international, but they hold the whip hand when
it comes to selection. The British clubs, the French clubs
are absolutely They're more than a fly in the ointment.
They are a gorilla in the ointment of sorting out
(04:22):
a global rugby season. The second thing is this international
rugby is rapidly devolving into a once every four year spectacle.
It's not entirely true. We know the Six Nations is
very relevant, very buoyant. We know that our Rugby Championship works,
the Bledisloe Cup works.
Speaker 4 (04:44):
But in general everybody.
Speaker 3 (04:46):
Is looking to the clubs and looking to the World
Cup to really.
Speaker 4 (04:50):
Display their wares.
Speaker 3 (04:51):
Does anybody know what happened to the teams except the
home fans in between World Cups? I'd say no, they don't.
The World Cup is the holy grail everything else in
between is just.
Speaker 2 (05:04):
Filled dissecting the sporting agenda. It's Sportsfex with Darcy Walter Grave.
Speaker 7 (05:12):
Big hello.
Speaker 3 (05:12):
Now to Colin Manspread, CEO of the Crusaders.
Speaker 6 (05:17):
Colin, how are you Darcy?
Speaker 4 (05:19):
Mate? Probably better than you.
Speaker 3 (05:20):
How much grief are you getting by saying no cow
bells at the stadium?
Speaker 4 (05:25):
You're going to get thrashed.
Speaker 6 (05:27):
I have had a few suggestions of where some cow
bells could go in my and on my anatomy, so yeah,
plenty of suggestions about how they could be used against
me or on me. So yeah, it's been it's been
a lot of fun, a lot of fun.
Speaker 4 (05:43):
This is not your call.
Speaker 3 (05:44):
This is well Topaki stadiums. Christ Church is where this
has come from.
Speaker 6 (05:48):
Or I'll tell you how it started, mate, it was.
It was actually Simon the Stirr from from Hamilton.
Speaker 4 (05:55):
Simon the rapis the CEO. You're calling him a stair
in our r.
Speaker 6 (05:59):
So he started bantering away about cow bells and so
I gestfully suggested that we should ban them, and then
of course it got leagues and then we started to
get people talking about what they were going to do
with them. So I said, oh, let's have a think
about this, and then there are some issues for the venue.
(06:20):
You know what it's like, it's three fifty mili seat
centers versus significantly broader seats in the likes of Eden
Park or FMNG. And so we ended up in this
situation where we did think people waving around cow bells
and we were stopped using flags when we were up
there a couple of years ago. So we thought, look, actually,
(06:43):
let's just not have cowbells in the stadium. And of
course it's our home game. It's not theirs, so happy
for them to cheer for their fans their fans and
cheer for their team, but it's yeah, it's our home game.
So we just thought we'd have a bit of sweet
Caroline and a few other things and they can leave
the cowbells at the game.
Speaker 3 (07:01):
So the whole stadium with the no musical instrument that
still vaguely applies and leaning on that a wee bit,
Colonel No.
Speaker 6 (07:08):
No, that's look, that's probably more I think that somebody
looked at the terms and conditions and saw that as
one of them. It's a crusader's decision. We're not going
to say, we're not going to blame it on anyone else.
We've got that far with this now it's almost there's
no way out.
Speaker 4 (07:24):
So it's a Crusader's decision.
Speaker 6 (07:26):
It's a Colin means Bridge decision, all.
Speaker 3 (07:28):
Right, So you're taking it on board. So you are
going to get a wee bit of great. What can
people do instead? How else can they show their fandoms?
You can't really bring an arigami cow bell?
Speaker 4 (07:37):
Can you not?
Speaker 6 (07:38):
But you can if you've seen these if you've seen
this meme stuff that's going on, they've got these things
where they can. They can bring on an app and
it's got a cowbell on the app on your phone.
And I've already had people show me the app and
saying I'm going to bring this in and they're going
to yell and scream and yeah, I don't think there's
going to be any problems with Chiefs fans getting across
(08:00):
their support for their team. That won't be an issue
at all. But it won't be a Chief's home game.
It's a Crusaders home game. That's going to be clear too.
Speaker 3 (08:07):
How many chief supporters are coming down? Do you know, Colin,
because those tickets sold about I don't know. In New
York minute didn't they.
Speaker 6 (08:14):
So how many a down they did, I'm not quite
sure of the exact number, but it was interesting. We
went on public sale and they were gone very very quickly.
Speaker 4 (08:25):
We didn't.
Speaker 6 (08:26):
What we should have done is probably GEO blocked the
Chief fans so that we could have had a completely
crusader a fight. But yeah, we weren't able to do that.
So unfortunately, we've got plenty of Chief support in there.
Speaker 4 (08:42):
Yes, spiling for a fight, aren't you, Colin. I think
you're getting right into the spirit of this. This is
not very straight laced boardroom behavior. You're having a right jab,
aren't you. This is good, I think. Well.
Speaker 6 (08:53):
The good thing is Clayton and his group, Rob and
his group, they're not too distracted by this stuff. But
boys had a lot of fun. You know, they're in
us and it's sort of what it's all about.
Speaker 4 (09:07):
You know.
Speaker 6 (09:07):
You get to this stage of the season. We've had
plenty of banter throughout the year. I am enjoying it.
I am a bit nervous somebody is going to embed
one of these things in my head somewhere, so but
that aside, I'm definitely enjoying the banter and the fun.
Speaker 3 (09:22):
What else do we need to know about the final
I was told yesterday by Jack Messli that there's a
chance there might be some late release tickets that are
the seventeen thousand.
Speaker 4 (09:31):
Is that a possibility?
Speaker 3 (09:32):
Is he just floating ideas to wind people up, like
what you're doing?
Speaker 4 (09:36):
No?
Speaker 6 (09:37):
No, no, So what happens is we release two members
and sponsors and partners, and then if they don't take
up their full allocation, you know, somebody might be on
annual leave or something of that nature, then then they
come back into the pot on Wednesday night, So Thursday
morning at nine ish we will do a limited public release.
(10:02):
So at the moment, every single seat is allocated, but
there is potential for a limited, a very small amount
to come back in. On Susday morning at nine o'clock.
Speaker 1 (10:14):
The chamber is now in session on Sports Fix.
Speaker 3 (10:18):
The doors of the chamber open, and oh look, it's
Chris Reeves akakel Ala from the New Zealander Herald at
sports writer with the most welcome on and cross. Always
good to have you here, always good to be here
tonight ten o'clock or ten past or twenty But I
don't know, but.
Speaker 4 (10:33):
It's over in Perth.
Speaker 3 (10:34):
But they've changed the time to make it more consumable
for the Eastern Seaboard night.
Speaker 4 (10:38):
I suppose for us it is Origin two.
Speaker 3 (10:42):
There's been tremult around this, with Billy Slater talking about
the insult from Aaron Wood dragging Paul Green into it,
which is regrettable, but he has apologized. They should be
worried about what they're doing in the park, not about
some errant guy throwing barbs at them from outside, because
they've got some work to do.
Speaker 7 (11:01):
They do have some work to do. It's an interesting
one tonight because it really feels like a New South
Wales when is sort of what everyone's expecting. But those
are the ones that I don't know. I feel like
Queensland get up for. They love to be counted out
and I wouldn't be surprised to see Queensland win tonight.
I don't think they will, but it wouldn't surprise me.
Speaker 3 (11:22):
They were so dominant that I don't think the points
that have justified. They thrashed them by twenty or thirty.
Speaker 4 (11:30):
They really did, but the score didn't reflect that.
Speaker 3 (11:33):
But what was that one of the most controlled games
you've ever seen from New South Wales in recent history.
Speaker 7 (11:39):
Yeah, I think in recent times, at least for my memory. Yeah,
New South Wales were just dominant in that game, and
like you say, Queensland didn't really have a lot for them.
By halftime, it really looked like, well, this New South
Wales game.
Speaker 4 (11:53):
Go to bed at home. This must have hurt.
Speaker 3 (11:58):
I talked to some Queensland fans afterwards and they were
not happy. They I'm sure the effort was there, they
just couldn't apply it. I'm not that second Ford They'll
still be scratching the head because that's not the Queensland team,
not at home, not losing the second game at home
in a row.
Speaker 4 (12:16):
This is not them.
Speaker 3 (12:17):
Talk about fire in the belly. They may combust when
they get to Perth.
Speaker 7 (12:21):
Yeah, it'd be very interesting. I feel like they would
have got a good rocket after that game, you know,
like if Brian To didn't get simboned at the end
of the first half and that first one, would they
have got that try early in the second. It's hard
to say. So you really want to see a better
Queensland performance tonight, whether or not that's you know, doing
(12:43):
more to put pressure on New South Wales, whether it's
slowing them down or whether it's just Queensland showing up
a little bit better.
Speaker 3 (12:50):
There is some Warrior representation, but not the one that
I think was wanted.
Speaker 4 (12:55):
It's Bunny, it's Gonberger, but.
Speaker 3 (12:56):
Kurt cape Will or Cape Kirtwill. It's I liked to
call him like something out of a NASA book. He's
going to be there, so his influence because we've already
heard that he won't be coming back to play the Panther,
which is understandable.
Speaker 4 (13:09):
How big is this so huge for Kirk, but how
big is it for the team.
Speaker 7 (13:12):
Yeah, he's been really good for the Warriors and he's
shown being played center a little bit more to his game.
You know, he's got that carry, he's got a little
bit of ball playing ability as well, So I think
it just brings a little bit extra And you know,
after Game one, Queensland could do with rolling the dice.
So like the I like the.
Speaker 3 (13:31):
Call big shot for the new South Wales side with
their halves pairing, they've lost very influential player. Roll on
it Jerome Lewy to bring it back again with Cleary
because they had wonderful partnership for years and now they're reunited.
Speaker 4 (13:49):
Queens and going are you kid? H you can't get
a break.
Speaker 7 (13:52):
Yeah, I mean Mitch Moses. It's a big loss, but
you bring back a guy who Nathan Cleary is very
very familiar playing alongside. You know, they've done it for
the Panthers, they've done it for New South Wales. It's
it's I guess it's tough for Queensland, but you know,
next man up, it's Origin. Both teams are going to
(14:14):
be stacked in that situation.
Speaker 3 (14:16):
That never fails to entertain this game. As much like
I'm not going to start for that, I'm not going
to watch that.
Speaker 4 (14:21):
I'm tired of. Blocker wrote as soon as it starts,
like wow, this is awesome. So I'm with you Queensland
to get it done.
Speaker 3 (14:29):
Then they get to go back for the final match,
the decider in New South Wales and get some.
Speaker 4 (14:35):
Ravenes from what happened in Origin one. This is a
beautiful story, Chris. It is.
Speaker 7 (14:39):
If you're a Queensland fan, absolutely, we're a New South
Wales fan. You want to done tonight, don't you?
Speaker 4 (14:44):
You do?
Speaker 3 (14:44):
Should be fun. I'll be all over it like a rash.
Can't help myself out this weekend.
Speaker 4 (14:49):
What a rivalry.
Speaker 3 (14:51):
Maybe it's not quite Queensland, New South Wales, but it
used to be Auckland Canterbury, but now it's Crusader's Chiefs.
I think the grief amongst that relationship, if you call
it that, it runs deep.
Speaker 4 (15:05):
No more cowbells, that they're trying.
Speaker 3 (15:07):
Everything they can, the Crusaders to stop the Chiefs getting
any attraction.
Speaker 7 (15:11):
Yeah, I feel like it's Crusaders versus everyone, right, it
just depends on who the this team is that year,
and recently it's been the Chiefs. I quite like the
call of no cow bells. I like a little bit
of niggle ahead of big games like this, and yeah,
no cow bells just reinforces at home field advantage for
the Crusaders, which you know, the Chiefs lost that they
(15:34):
don't lose to the Blues week one, and this game's
played in Hamilton.
Speaker 3 (15:37):
They're gonna have all the cow bells they want exactly,
So that is a lessen What would Will forelsay about this?
Speaker 7 (15:45):
You know, guys got to have more cow bell, got
to have more cow bell It should be good.
Speaker 3 (15:50):
I like the fact that both of the CEOs are
climbing and they're having a go. Life and sport is
far too important to be taken seriously and they get that,
which is a quite a long jump from the stayed
fish heads that used to run the place. They're actually
willing to show that the humans and have a bit
of joy. Is that's what sport's all about.
Speaker 7 (16:11):
Right, Absolutely, It's all about having a little bit of fun,
especially in these big games. You know you're playing for
the prize at the end of the line. You know
only two teams get to do this, really enjoy the moment.
And I don't know, I think we're seeing that a
little bit more in sport now, particularly in rugby, we're
seeing a little bit more personality come through. I guess
you'd call it that. You look at a guy like
(16:31):
Rico Yoanni, who is very, very divisive. He knows what
he's doing exactly. I really like that. I really like
what he's doing.
Speaker 3 (16:40):
I reckon Simon grafis to see the Chiefs is going
to smuggle a cow ball into.
Speaker 4 (16:44):
The corporate box. There's no way security is going to
stop him, right.
Speaker 7 (16:48):
Someone is going to be there with a cow bell,
at least one person.
Speaker 4 (16:51):
Chris, always a pleasure, Thanks for joining us here in
the chamber.
Speaker 7 (16:54):
