This is Sportsfix Howard by News Talks EDB.

Speaker 3 (00:20):
Welcome to Sports Fix for Wednesday, the ninth of July.
I'm Elliott Smith. Coming up on today's episode with GJ.
Gardner Holmes, New Zealand's most trusted home builder. We talk
to former New South Wales prop Aaron Woods the countdown
on to the State of Origin decider. Aaron will give
us his point of view on who wins tonight's and why.

(00:41):
Alex Powell joins us in the chamber to dissect the
big news of the day. How much more international cricket
can we expect from Cain Williamson and what changes we
might get from the All Blacks when that team is
named tomorrow. That's and more to come right here on
Sports Fix.

Speaker 2 (00:58):
In other news, let's.

Speaker 3 (01:01):
Go around the Sporting Globe for the last twenty four
hours and calls from Basketball New Zealand for a funding
mot will change After a revelation behind the Junior Tall
Blacks attendance at the Under nineteen World Cup, where they
came fourth. Each player in the team had to pay
five thousand dollars to attend, with costs reduced by the
gathering body from an initial ten thousand. Interim Chief Executive
Linda Edwards's growing participation in the sport outway's the funding model.

Speaker 2 (01:24):
A sport that's a truly global sport.

Speaker 4 (01:28):
The travel is incredible and we're punched well above our weight.
I think the criteria for that funding is probably not
suitable for those types of sports anymore.

Speaker 5 (01:37):
To football, cret a s design.

Speaker 6 (01:41):
The final awakes Chelsea and a Mascus side.

Speaker 2 (01:47):
Here in New Jersey.

Speaker 3 (01:49):
Chelsea's been in Brazil's Fluminense there soonil to advance to
Monday's Club World Cup final. They'll play either Paris and
Germain or Real Madrid in the decide of those two
teams playing tomorrow morning. The first semifinalists have been found
at Wimbledon Women's top seed are in a Suberlinka's beating
Laura Segmund and three sids, and Amanda Anisimova has advanced
Varna Sails. Yeah, pablu chin Govit in straight seats as well.

Speaker 4 (02:11):
Such a battle today. I was up there in the
second set and yeah, she started to play some unreal
tennis and I just kept fighting and yeah, that's high.

Speaker 3 (02:20):
Break was super stressful and in the means, Taylor Fretz
has bet in Karen HASHANOVN four and Carlszelkherez has bet
in cam norrich in three leading a vix.

Speaker 2 (02:29):
We've got just the ticket. It's sports Vix now by
News Talks.

Speaker 3 (02:33):
Ivy New Zealand rug But you should reciprocate the Australia
New Zealand Invitational side when the Lions tour down here
in twenty twenty nine.

Speaker 5 (02:41):
They could well.

Speaker 3 (02:42):
Get wallops by the British and Irish Lions this weekend
in Adelaide, But when they take to the field for
the first time since nineteen eighty nine, in my mind,
it should kick off a tradition that whenever Lions tour
is held down in Australia or New Zealand, they face
a combined team. Lions tours are notoriously hard to schedule,
and often the visitors want to build into a tour
with a balance of easier games before they settle on

(03:05):
their shadow test side. Last time they were here in
twenty seventeen, the five Super Rugby sides, the Moldy All
Blacks and the three tests were preceded by a barbarian
inside that kicked off the tour. A soft start is
that only arrived a few days prior, but bidden the
barbarians for twenty twenty nine. Seems like the obvious move.
How good would combine shops, strength from friends, all Blacks

(03:26):
and Wallaby's players be taken somewhere around our country. You
could get overseas based all Blacks home for one last
dance as well. Lions traditions have been built on tour,
it says as much in the emblem since eighteen eighty eight.
It's time to extend the of friendship across the Tasman
and begin something special in twenty twenty nine.

Heavy stat again, State made again to make the state
of origin decided tonight in Sydney, New South Wales hosting
Queensland to decide the series won apiece after New South
Wales one game one and Queensland footback to win game two,
joining us now, he played fourteen times for New South
Wales during his career. Now i'mbarking on a broadcast career

(04:15):
and he'll commentate the game tonight on Aussie radio for
Triple Him. Aaron Woods joining us on SPORTSPEX. Thanks so
much for your time.

Speaker 5 (04:21):
No no ories, thanks for having me Legend appreciate.

Speaker 6 (04:24):
Its time and speaking to people in New Zealand other
than that Princess Shaw Johnson. So I'm really excited.

Speaker 3 (04:29):
Well, how good is a state of origin decider? I mean,
I know that you'd rather win it in a clean
sweet but this has surely got the Eastern seaboard absolutely pumping.

Speaker 6 (04:38):
Ah, you're not wrong. Look, game one to win up
a sun callt for the Blues. We'll pretty confident going
into the game to in Perth. But as the Queenslanders do,
when everyone's against them, the backs against the roofs, they
stand up and they just had a great performance led
by the.

Speaker 5 (04:51):
One on only camera Monster.

Speaker 6 (04:52):
You just seeing the look in his eyes when he
come out, you could tell he was on for that game.

Speaker 5 (04:55):
But now we got a decider there.

Speaker 6 (04:57):
This is what this is what the NROL won, This
is what us and Queensland people want. They're coming to
our home ground, these Queenslanders and tonight, I honestly cannot wait.
There's been so much talk, the drama, the theater. You know,
obviously the devastating news for the captain of the queens
inside losing his father. In the build up, Billy Slater's
made some huge decisions bringing back Josh poppet Lee out

(05:18):
of retirement of origin, Shibasaki.

Speaker 5 (05:20):
In there and the Blues. Mate, they're just flying under
the radar.

Speaker 6 (05:23):
I think there's a big storm brewing and you know what,
I think it's going to hit the Queensland side at
eight ten tonight.

Speaker 3 (05:28):
Do you think the weight of expectations now on Queensland
given they did level the series back in Perth a
couple of weeks back.

Speaker 6 (05:35):
Yeah, Look, I think we're expecting Queensland to do a
queens then. There's so much talk in this build up
is the miracles coming? Obviously Game two was it was
how I was going to win by how many?

Speaker 5 (05:46):
But it didn't happen.

Speaker 6 (05:47):
As I said, the great Queensland size, they stand up
when they need to deliver, and tonight I just believe
that a lot of the pressure it's going to be
on Queensland.

Speaker 5 (05:55):
Billy Slater's made some big.

Speaker 6 (05:56):
Cause, you know, they're talking about this fairy tale, the
Queensland spirit, it's all you know, all the stars are
aligning for him. But the one thing that I'm happy
as as a new stuff whal Was fan, is that
then this of ours Blues are flying under. The raider
has been very quiet on our end and we just
don't know what's coming. We've had Latrell Mitchell's had a
really quiet series. Dan On Edwards's finding for him and

(06:18):
Nathan Cleary is not injured, so anything could happen tonight.

Speaker 3 (06:21):
Is there one player in particularly that you think needs
to stand up for the Blues this evening, Well.

Speaker 6 (06:25):
Well, no doubt, obviously we need we need Cleary. Clear
is our main man. He's our He's the pivot that
you know I was needy. He went into game too,
he twins he's growing. Goal kicking the day before for
Game two and he just he was limited. He couldn't
do the long kicking in the game and he could
tell it really harns his running games.

Speaker 5 (06:43):
So this time he's fit.

Speaker 6 (06:44):
I don't think he'll be goal kicking. I think he's
just going to let Zach Lomax do that. Hopefully Zach
Lomas kick some goals tonight because we scored more tries
and than the Queens and Side last time, but just
couldn't convert them into goals. But I reckon this is
this is the moment, this is There's been so much
talk is clearly a great player. I already think he
is a great player winning four competitions in a row,
but to go to that next level to be classes

(07:06):
immortal of our game, I think he really needs Tom
had Origin and I think this is his time.

Speaker 5 (07:11):
He's ready to go. He's twenty eight years of age.

Speaker 6 (07:12):
He's matured his body, he's fit, and I think we're
going to see a big performance from Nath tonight.

Speaker 3 (07:17):
You played under Laurie Daily when he was new South
Wales coach the first time around. What have you seen
from him this time around and the way that he's
adapted to he's part two of his coaching career in Origin,
I think the big thing for Loss is how he
handles coming out of a loss. And you know, when
I was there in those series previously, he sort of
not to go hide and you looked a little bit

(07:38):
quiet and you could just tell the you know, just
the persona of Lauria Daley's a big you know, he's
a strong figure. He just looked like he was just
taking down a peg, whereas this time he's held his own,
he's held his team straight.

Speaker 5 (07:50):
Which is really good.

Speaker 6 (07:51):
You know, wind Lis of Joy has had the same
mindset going in the next one and this one, like
you look, he's come out you know, obviously with the
devastating news as I said before we Kenra Muntz's father.
You know, he's come out and said, you know, there's
things that are bigger than the game. And probably before
in his series when he did coach, he probably wouldn't
try men that he might have just tried to lay
low and just stay out of it. But he's front

(08:11):
footed it. He's acknowledged what they did wrong in Game two.
Not once did he blame the referees. He was not
happy with our discipline of New South Wales's side. So
he's own where they've been wrong. And they've had ten
days in this camp and to speak about things that
they've done wrong, they really need to action it.

Speaker 5 (08:28):
So I really love what Laurie's doing. And there's a lot,
like I said, there's a lot of question marks over lass.

Speaker 6 (08:32):
This is an unlosable series after winning Game one at Suncourt,
but origin it's a funny thing and he can happen.
So happy to see how he's going and he's still
got the big smile on his face.

Speaker 3 (08:43):
Former Blues prop Aaron Woods with us just a couple
of final questions. Aaron Josh Papa Lee you mentioned him before?
How big is him coming out of retirement to help
the Maroons? And Aaron Woods give us a prediction. WI
will the game be won and lost to Night and
who wins?

Speaker 6 (08:58):
I reckon that New South Whale was win obviously building
a blue I bleed blue.

Speaker 5 (09:02):
I reckon this well. I was win by twelve.

Speaker 6 (09:04):
I think we kick all our goals and I just
reckon the start from so well. They're going to be
very disciplined. They're not going to give away eight penalties
in the first half and that's just a job for
them to do and to do it in front of
their home state.

Speaker 5 (09:15):
They're going to love it. So a big victory for
I was by twelve points.

Speaker 3 (09:18):
We looked forward to that game tonight and miss Luck
with your commentary tonight. Aaron Woods, thanks for joining us
across New Zealand on News Talk ZB no.

Speaker 5 (09:25):
Aris, thanks to appreciate for having me.

Speaker 2 (09:26):
The chamber is now in session on Sports Fix.

Speaker 3 (09:30):
Time to go into the chamber now and joining us
is New Zealand Herald sports writer Alex Powell. Greeting Zylex,
thanks for joining us in the chamber.

Speaker 4 (09:37):
Get early very different change from Darcy.

Speaker 3 (09:39):
It is, it is indeed, but we're going to talk
some similar topics. And you've written a good article today
about Came Williamson and his future with the black Caps
given he's not playing this upcoming Test tour of Zimbabe Wey.
Is this a surprise necessarily that he's not there and
what does it mean, nice guess for his long term
future with the black Caps.

Speaker 4 (09:58):
I mean it was signposted very early when the central
contracts came out there he probably wasn't going to go
to Zimbabwe at all. There was hope he played the
Test Test series. I mean, he's so close to ten
thousand Test runs, you think this'd be a very easy one.
What does it mean for his long term future? I
think it's going to continue to be on a case by
case basis. You know, there's a lot of cricket in
twenty twenty six Test cricket, you know, so we're away
in England and Ireland, we have India home, then we

(10:19):
have Australia away. So those are three really big series
and then a really exciting one against Island. Will came
Williamson feature in all of it? I don't know. I'd
like to think he would, but I mean, who knows
what happens between now and then.

Speaker 3 (10:30):
Do you think he obviously's on a casual contract of sorts?
Now do you think he's as committed to the black
Caps and as he was when he's captain as a
naturally Now when he's on a casual contract, these type
of tours become easy to pass pass up.

Speaker 4 (10:44):
I mean I think the short answers, No, he isn't
as committed. I mean, that's why he's on a casual contract.
He will play for the black Caps when it suits him,
you know, the same way that Devin Conway does and
Finale does and Trent Bolt tried to. But I think
that's just the way cricket is at the moment. You know,
countries like New Zealand, South Africa, the Western Norstrilanka sort
of have to get what they can when they can.

Speaker 3 (11:04):
Yeah, we've just got to accept it and basically hope
that Kane's good enough to turn up and has the
time in his calendar to do so when the Black
Caps have a game.

Speaker 4 (11:11):
Although I'm saying that they won three and all in
there where it came reason last year.

Speaker 3 (11:14):
Smith that it needs them all black squad out tomorrow
for the second Test against France in Wellington. Were expecting
big changes, I guess will have to be at least
two to the run on side with sever Reese and
Scott Barrett out injured. But are you expecting Scott Robertson
to rap up his squad from the first Test and
throw it up like confetti and see what happens for

(11:35):
the game too?

Speaker 4 (11:35):
Well, I don't really know. I'd like to get your
take on it, because rays Are said at the start
he'd like to give everyone a run, you know, But
because of how I guess unconvincing that first Test was,
you can't really do that. When France have sort of
played their way into the series.

Speaker 3 (11:47):
It's gonna be interesting, isn't it. I think they will
have to obviously naturally make some changes and whether that's
a Ruben Love comes on the bench this week and
Mackenzie comes into the starting side. Patrick tuy Plotu will
come into the twenty three to roll Lomax week to
week proposition with his wee injury Nickel as well, So
there are some players that could be made into the

(12:07):
starting side and then you have perhaps a wee bit
left over foot tiers three. But the issue is you
don't want this to be a one all game heading
into week three, and you've got to live by the sword,
die by the sort of what you see in saying
you know, they're gonna give everyone a chance in the series.
So I think they're going to have to make some changes,
whether it's just on the bench or not. It's going
to be fascinating.

Speaker 4 (12:26):
I think we've got a pretty big clue yesterday in
the media rounds when to mostly Tava Tabanawe was put up.
I mean, that's a pretty good indication that he's going
to play.

Speaker 5 (12:32):
Ah, they've done this before.

Speaker 3 (12:33):
They've done this before and tricked us by putting players
up that have no mix, you know not in the
twenty three lamed and named it later in the week.
It's gonna be interesting that I as well, would you
stick with two bo vii for another week? On the
blind side, did you see enough in that first game
to go yep, there's the bones of something there.

Speaker 4 (12:50):
I don't like Tupo VI at Blindside. That's not me
saying he can't play that. I just don't like it there.
I think you start playing guys out of possession, you'd
get into troubles. Like you, you weaken, you don't weaken
your strength to strengthen your weakness. I think he was
such a good optional lock last year to then move him.
But Fabian Holland was great, and Scott Barrett's obviously to
play every time he's fits. I just don't know what
you do. It's a great problem to have.

Speaker 3 (13:11):
It really is now of origin decider tonight as well
in Sydney. Queensland have won nine of the eleven that
last decided since two thousand and six in state of origin.
But they go to Sydney where their records not great.
They haven't won too often there. Who wins tonight and why?

Speaker 4 (13:28):
I think Queensland I think emotionally with the Cameron monster situation.
So if you don't know as father passed away a
couple of days ago, but he's going to play, He's
going to captain the team. I think there's going to
be enough about them. You know New South Wales well
going to the gamer's favorites, but they go into every
game's rates because they've just got such a great pool
of players that pick or pool of players to pick from.
But I don't know, like it's that sort of that trope,

(13:50):
isn't it. Queensland just get origin.

Speaker 3 (13:52):
They just don't get it in New South Wales. I mean,
who would have thought that though after game one as well, Alex,
that would be talking about one a series decider, but
two that maybe you know, Queensland can get through on
that emotion and beat New South Wales at the punch
And we'll find out tonight. But it's fascinating because after
that first game it was looking odds on for a
blues clean sweet Yeah.

Speaker 4 (14:11):
I mean it was staggering the way they came back
in Perth, like those neutral games are so hard to
go and when when you're already one killed down like
we've seen it so many times. But full credit to
I mean, full credit to Kirk Cape. Well let's not
forget the Warriors second round. Who was I mean he
should have been man in the match in that game,
but he wasn't. But no, I mean, I'm fascinated to
see how it's going to play out New Southwest probably
won't get a better chance than this to win a series.

Speaker 3 (14:33):
We will find out tonight. Full credit to you, Alex
Power for joining us in the chain, but thank you
very much.
