You're listening to a podcast from News Talks ed B

This is Sportsfix. Howard by News Talk said.
Speaker 2 (00:20):
Be hello there and welcome into a fresh episode of
the Sports Fix podcast for the back end of your
working week. It is Friday, July eleven. We're here in
association with GJ. Gardner Holmes, New Zealand's most trusted home builder.
It is Test Match Eve. We love a test match Eeve.
I'm Jason Pine Elliot Smith alongside. How are you feeling
about west and winter?
Speaker 3 (00:39):
And I've come in like a drowned rat to do
this podcast. Bidey it is phely Weirt says, I'm sure
it is around the rest of the country as well,
and know a lot of people having a tough time
with the weather. But as we built into this Test
Match lap, let's hope conditions a little bit better by
seven o five Saturday nights.
Speaker 2 (00:53):
Let's hope. So you've got some down low from the
All Blacks media session you attended this afternoon in terms
of a guest because we have a doubleheader of course
at sky Stadium tomorrow.
Speaker 3 (01:02):
That's right, Georgia Miller Black Friend's Open side braining New
Zealand rugby player of the Year, the calvn Art Tremain winner,
is going to join us and discuss her big game
tomorrow as well as the looming rugby will Cut squad announcements.
Speaker 2 (01:13):
Lots to get stuck into, including the latest four steers,
so let's get into it.
Speaker 3 (01:17):
In other news, let's wrap up the last twenty four
hours in sport. The Blackstock suffering their first loss at
the Softball World Cup in Canada beat in the seven
to two by Venezuela in their final pull match. They
should still get through though to the super round satisfaction
with the result rather than how it was acquired. For
Ryan Fox on the opening day of God's Scottish Open,
(01:37):
He's two back from the lead in a type of
ninth could's even top ten two be four under past
sixty six that included just the five pars at the
Renaissance Club at the three fairways, but only missed three greens.
I had a couple of three parts and missed a
couple of short ones, but also I felt like from
thirty feet everything had a chance.
Speaker 4 (01:52):
Of going in.
Speaker 3 (01:53):
It was just a strange day.
Speaker 2 (01:54):
A lot of bogies, a lot of erdies and an
eagle and there it was very happy with the score off, but.
Speaker 3 (01:58):
Would like it a little less colorful. Amanda and some
overs into her first Grand Slam Tenna's final rocking out
world number one are in a super Linka and wimbled
Dinder fitting Seed always had the faith on the run
in precept victory to the last the final four match,
a ruthless display.
Speaker 1 (02:15):
From Egosianta will play for since miniature signals.
Speaker 3 (02:21):
Tatof on ESPN. There she dispatched Belinda Beenture six to six.
Love at all Black's utility back. Damien McKenzie's hopefully crack
and the ten jersey will come sooner rather than later.
It will cover via the bench tomorrow for the second
Test against France and Wellington, Boden Barrett starts at first
five for a fourth insecut in all Blacks match. McKenzie's
tea is the prospect of the station. Mark Vic Cherry
(02:42):
may come later in the series or at a later day,
but my roll at.
Speaker 2 (02:46):
The moments just bringing out at top the bench and
making sure I do a good job there.
Speaker 3 (02:49):
And that was sports today leading a vex.
Speaker 1 (02:52):
We've got just the ticket, it's Sports vix now by
News Talks evy.
Speaker 2 (02:57):
So what then should we expect from test to All
Blacks the Fronts tomorrow night in Wellington? I can tell
you from a Wellingtonian's point of view, it has been
rather inclement weather wise for most of today Friday. It
is set to be more of the same tomorrow, with
a slight improvement around five o'clock. So let's so by
the time kickoff comes at seven there isn't too much
(03:18):
rain around. The wind will probably continue. But then when
you play rugby or any sport actually in Wellington, you
have to factor the conditions in. It is simply part
of playing in our capital city. It can rain, it
can blow, you have to factor it in, and in
particular around the aerial game that is somewhere where both
sides will have to cut their cloth to suit. Big
(03:40):
loss for the All Blacks in that regard. With Caleb
Clarke ruled out earlier on this afternoon with an ankle injury,
because he is widely regarded as the best of our
back three, with perhaps the exception of Will Jordan under
the high ball, certainly the best of our wingers anyway,
and Monti Nadawa coming in what an occasion for him
just as third Test for New Zealand after only making
(04:02):
the original squad as injury cover. Now he's going to
run out. He's pretty good under the high ball. Rico Jowani, Well,
was he found wanting last week? And I think that
would be entirely accurate. But they're going to probably pap
him again. Will Jordan at fullback of course, and well,
I guess you wait and see what the tactics might be.
Given all of that, though, after what happened last week,
(04:22):
I feel like it could go one of two ways.
For France, they may feel as though last week was
their best opportunity that if they were going to beat
the All Blacks in a three Test series, it would
be the first Test that was their best chance, and
but for that knock on late in the game, they
might well have come to Wellington won the up well.
They also though, be motivated thinking we got that close,
(04:42):
We got that close to knocking off the All Blacks
with what is effectively a second string side for us,
Why can't we go to Wellington and do exactly the
same thing there and keep this series alive? Headed for Hamilton,
well the All Blacks fan of me says that isn't
going to happen. I feel like our boys have got
enough in the tank and enough up their sleeve to
make sure that tomorrow night's margin is a lot more
(05:04):
comfortable than.
Speaker 3 (05:05):
It was in Dunedin.
Speaker 2 (05:06):
But just like the weather in Wellington, we should expect
the unexpected, because anything could happen.
Speaker 1 (05:14):
This is Sportsfecs, your daily doseph Sports News, cower By
News talksb.
Speaker 3 (05:21):
Well The Big Day four the Black Ferns as well
as the All Blacks tomorrow a doubleheader at sky Stadium.
The Black Ferns first up against Australia from half pass
for their final game before the Rugby World Cup at
least on home soil, and the final game before that
squad is announced two weeks Tonight's plenty on the line
for the Black Ferns last chance to impress and also
(05:43):
a chance to play the famed rivals Australia and the
O'Reilly Cup. New Zealand having never lost to Australia in
women's fifteens. Joining us now is the reigning New Zealand
Calvin Archer, main Player of the Year and open side
flank at tomorrow afternoon against Australia for what the Black
Ferns usually play sevens has switched to fifteen's. Georgia Miller
(06:04):
joins US Georgia, have preparations gone this week ahead of
Australi tomorrow.
Speaker 4 (06:09):
Yeah, we've been a really good week here in Wellington,
coming off our game against Black Forens XV last weekend.
But everyone's just really excited to get one more game
at home before World Cup selection and then the team
heads off to England, so it's exciting times.
Speaker 3 (06:24):
What did you get out of that trial game last
week as you built into this test match, Georgia, Yeah, I.
Speaker 4 (06:29):
Guess, like we find to talk about, the internal competition
is most important for us, and we knew that both
teams and all players were really going to push because
you know, selection hasn't been made and there's still an
opportunity for everyone to make that team. So we knew
it was going to be a tough game and to
see the best sixty odd New Zealand rugby players out
(06:52):
there was pretty cool.
Speaker 3 (06:53):
Does that drive you all internally? You know the fact
that you are competing against each other. Obviously you all
want to go to the World Cup, but also you
w wants best for the Black Funds at the World Cup.
So does that just drive everyone to be a bit
better and push each other?
Speaker 4 (07:09):
Yeah, totally. The internal competition is it's really rammed up,
and it's great because that's what pushes each other and
helps everybody get better. So at the end of the day,
you've got the best players, the best twenty three and
that Jersey to go perform and win a World Cup
for our country. So yeah, it's exciting and I think
in a high performance environment that's what you need to succeed.
Speaker 3 (07:30):
What do you expect from the Walleries tomorrow afternoon, Georgia.
Speaker 4 (07:34):
Yeah, I'm really excited to play against Australia. I guess
the rivalry from sevens and now to get the opportunity
in fifteens. You know they're going to be a good
side and play the four eighty. So we've just got
to go out there, play our game and hopefully get
the result.
Speaker 3 (07:50):
Well that you've played against plenty on the World Series circuit,
Charloicke Kaslak is starting at thirteen, one of the best
players in world sevens. How have you noticed her progression
in fifteen similarly chasing that World Cup spot as you are,
but in the back line and what do you expect
she might add to that Australian side.
Speaker 4 (08:07):
Yeah, totally. It's cool. You know a couple of sevens
players in the Wallaroos sider. It's exciting that Stacey's playing
in that center gud too, so that's going to be
a pretty good matchup. She's great ballplayer Keasluk, so yeah,
just shut it down early.
Speaker 3 (08:22):
And yeah, what's been the biggest lesson for you going
into fifteens? You've now had a bit of time to
settle into the program after finishing the seventh season. What
have been the big lessons to you coming back to
the fifteens game and playing internationally for the first time.
Speaker 4 (08:38):
Yeah, it's just making the most of the opportunities to learn.
There's a lot of I guess information and content with
just taking what I need and bringing my style of
play to the position. I think it's easy to just
fall into what a traditional open side flanker looks like,
but I want to be able to bring my strength
into that role. So yeah, it's been exciting to I guess,
(09:01):
test the waters and see what I can.
Speaker 3 (09:02):
Do where obviously you've got a strong running game as well. Georgia.
We saw that in the USA game that you burden
and the trial game last week as well. Do you
feel that it's a real strength that you bring to
this black Food site.
Speaker 4 (09:14):
Yeah, hopefully I can, I guess insert myself out on
the edges and make a few breaks. But yeah, I
guess that's probably one of my strengths. And so I
get the ball and the statosis up, I'm going for it.
Speaker 3 (09:29):
Black Fund's open side. Flanka Georgia Miller with US Georgia.
The conditions in Wellington might be a bit windy and
wet tomorrow. How does the team handle that if that
is the state of play in terms of the conditions, Yeah.
Speaker 5 (09:43):
I guess we does not excuse to play a certain way,
so we're gonna we're going to have to be adaptable
to whatever it brings and still be I guess being
able to play our sile of play.
Speaker 4 (09:55):
Will be most important. So hopefully it's a good doubt
then we on a good performance on the.
Speaker 3 (10:00):
Other side of the scrum or the park is from
you at a blind side. Flanka is Alana Bringder tomorrow
afternoon and usually obviously she plays Locker has played plenty
of six before. But what does Alana bring to that
blindside role?
Speaker 4 (10:14):
Yeah, and that's excited for last to be back in
the sixth Jersey. I think like you've seen her running
game down the edge as well, and she's as as
a forward you know, line out scrums and as a leader,
she adds a lot of value. So it be exciting
to play with her as my other flanker.
Speaker 3 (10:32):
So yeah, and finally, Georgia, I know as Black Funds
you've connected a little bit with the All Blacks this week.
I think you might have had a dinner earlier on
in the week as well being part of that double
head of connecting with the All Blacks. How special has
this week been in camp?
Speaker 4 (10:47):
Yeah, it's been cool. I guess the connection of them
with Black Jersey are important. And to be able to
shift and as them and just have a chat and
have a laugh and just gets the lax off the
film of life. But yeah, hopefully they put on us
this game and it'll be a good night us followed
by them.
Speaker 3 (11:03):
Fantastic. Well, Georgia, will she the best of luck tomorrow afternoon,
go beat those wall of rus and thanks for joining
us as always, appreciate your time.
Speaker 4 (11:11):
Hell thank you.
Speaker 3 (11:12):
The Chamber is now in session.
Speaker 2 (11:14):
On Sportsfax, into the Chamber we go, and really on
the eve of a Test match that does the topic
of conversation we most readily gravitate towards the news this
afternoon of another change to the All Black starting fifteen.
(11:37):
Caleb Clark is now out. Can you give us the downline?
Speaker 3 (11:40):
What's happened to him? Your high ankle injury suffered at
training yesterday? Now, Ardi Sava says it was a freak accident.
We haven't got any further details on that, so I'm
not sure exactly what he did. We went in the
session at the time when it happened yesterday. So he
is out not only for this week but also for
next week as well. And Monni in Nadawah, who was
out of the squad only and as injury covering. He
is out around the squad carrying bags and being part
(12:02):
of things, but elevated from outside the twenty three to
start on the right wing. And for those of you
who looking for ordering Rico Juani on the right wing,
he now moves back to the left wing this week.
But you're right, this has been a number of chains.
You think Trell Lomax is still injured that Mighty Williams
ruled out before the series as well. Luke Jacobson missed
the first game. Wallace a tet obviously ruled out as well.
(12:24):
It might even be a couple of players I'm missing
off the top of my head because there's just been
injury after injury. Scott Barrett sever Ree's out this week too,
so it's been a lot of juggling for the All
Blacks coaches and now and money. Nadaway gets a chance
to repress which he has been a top star Test
career to this point. He gets a chance on what
could be a wet sky Stadium track tomorrow night.
Speaker 2 (12:43):
So I guess they had a few options, or actually
not a few. They had other options. They could have
feasibly started to Mothy Tava Tava Nahwai on the wing.
They could feasibly have started Ruben Love on the wing.
Why do you think they went with Nadawah from outside,
as you say, the original squad that they chose.
Speaker 3 (12:59):
I think they went with Nadawah because well, let's talk
about why they didn't go with those other two. Perhaps
Ruben Love, a very very good player, has never played
test rugby on the right wing and the aerial assault
that has come from the French last week. We know
how good Caleb Clark is under the ball, and another
one is pretty good as well under the high ball.
It's almost the light for like replacement. And with Rubin
(13:19):
Love not having too much wing experience this year, I
think it would have been a big ass for him
to jump in and coming at short notice to Marthy
Tather Tather and now why on the bench? That's his role.
He is primarily a midfielder in the squad. So I
think they've gone with let's go with the option that
is probably going to give us the most lightful light
replacement but also the least disruption to the bench. And
(13:40):
that's why they've gone that manner.
Speaker 2 (13:41):
All right, So no suggestion of bringing somebody in that
they quite a bit of cover with what they've got,
even though he uhould say Clark's not going to be
there next week on.
Speaker 3 (13:49):
No, they may have to make a decision onces again
on Sunday and go do we bring someone extra to Hamilton?
You know, someone like an aj Lamb potentially is with
the Australia New Zealand invitation. All this week, So tomorrow
night he gets a chance to impress as well whether
they maybe look to bring him in for next week's test,
and potentially he'd be the next cab off the rank
a fee Hark. He has been in and around the
(14:10):
All Black squad as well in recent times. And they've
also got Mark Talia who was on the sidelines. You
would say highly unlikely, but if they got shorter than that,
you know there is this player that can do you
a job for a for a one test, one off test,
you know, next week potentially in Hamilton.
Speaker 2 (14:24):
Indeed, all right, there's no getting away from it. It's
not going to be like it was under the roof
last Saturday in Duned and it doesn't matter what it's
like outside there. I think it was actually pretty mild.
But by the sounds of it, this weather is going
to come and go in. It's in, it's wind and
its rain over the next twenty four to thirty six hours,
which will affect the game aerially. How much is this
(14:45):
going to affect the way both sides kick the ball?
Speaker 3 (14:48):
I think it will affect the way the Blacks will
approach this game, and I think almost in a good way,
because they know the Sky's Stadium condition is much better
than the French last week. You know, the French should
send up a lot of aerial attacks knowing that it's
going to land where you know, directly straight in front
by and large unless it comes off the side of
your boot where you kicked it from Tomorrow night at
Sky's Stadium, it's got to rip tot for swilling with
(15:09):
his not win, So you throw up a few kicks.
You know, players like Jordy Boutt know that said him
at the back of their hand. Bowden Barrett as well,
can Royguard. You know, those are three of the All
Blacks kickers that can use that to their advantage potentially
tomorrow night. So if anything, I actually think it might
favor the All Blacks. But they do have to be
better under the high ball than they were into need.
They've got to see the chases through quicker. A lot
of that escort rule is frustrating. But they've got to
(15:31):
figure out a way to be better under the high
ball and nominate almost to play to do that attacking
of the high ball.
Speaker 2 (15:38):
If they were to win tomorrow night, that obviously would
be a box ticked. But where do you think the
biggest improvement in performance would be required for most all
Blacks fans to be relatively satisfied.
Speaker 3 (15:52):
I think finishing chances for me Piney. Look, they had
three tries just allowed by the TMO, so the game
could have been different last week two of them you know,
fearly ruled out one you know, questionable, But they didn't
make the most of their entries into the twenty two.
They had a number of chances in the twenty two
that they squandered and needs to be better at. They
play fast, they want to play fast. They're back there
(16:13):
game that they are fitter and faster than any team
going around at the moment. They've got to be better
than that. So I think that needs to be sharper
tomorrow night. And if the conditions are greasy, are a
little bit wet underfoot, that could prevent them playing the
style they want to. So they're first and foremost. But
defense wise hasn't really been talked about this week. But
I think they're not put under immense pressure of the
(16:34):
twenty two yet still folded a couple of times rather
softly against the French. They can see it the twenty
seven points three tries in the end and a couple
of those French tries came without having to work perhaps
as hard as the All Blacks had to work at
the other end of the park. So I mean that's simple,
isn't it. But attack and defense, that's what you want
to see from the All Black Summer.
Speaker 2 (16:52):
Nightw Just to finish, just want to zoom in on
one player and that's Billy Procter. There's been a lot
of clamoring for him to be the starting thirteen. He
I think at a Mixed night in Dunedin on a
ground he knows well it's his home ground, with an
opportunity to actually say right, I am the thirteen.
Speaker 3 (17:09):
Moving forward, How big a night is this for Billy
property I think it's big because he has been the
film player form center of super Aby for two seasons
now at least, and didn't get a lot of chances
this year and probably didn't make the most of the
ones he didn't he got last year, so he gets
got the opportunity last week, as you said, Mixed, was
left on the outside for the first try last week,
didn't get a huge chances to show what he can
(17:31):
do on attack. So I think tomorrow night is pretty
pivotcual in Billy Proctor's career. You go out and have
a stormer, you know, I think you put your name
up in lights and there's Scott Robertson going yep, that's
our first choice center. You don't. The door's open, it's
Anton Lennert Brown. It's back to maybe Rico and that
third Test next weekend. So this is a chance, a
real chance, as you said on his home ground, Pinty,
(17:51):
to put a stake in the ground and go. I
am the All Blacks thirteen for Billy Procter.
Speaker 2 (17:54):
So much intrigued hit this Test match on News Talks,
he'd be Our coverage starts at six, were built up
towards seven o'clock where our commentary team is Elliott Smith,
Ross Bond alongside and I'll be downside like trying to
stay dry.
Speaker 3 (18:06):
Bring a jacket. I will bring a jacket.
Speaker 2 (18:08):
Might not be just the one jacket. That is us
in the chambers today.
Speaker 1 (18:11):
