On Sports Fix with D'Arcy Waldegrave for Tuesday July 29th 2025,  we discuss the Warriors ANZAC NRL match. It’s been set down to be hosted in Wellington next year, a place the Wahs don’t mind playing in considering recent results. CEO Cameron George wants it to be set in stone, a permanent NZ-based fixture. As long as they don’t invite the Storm, right? Cam joins us to explain why the game needs to stay in NZ.

D’Arcy complains about complaining. Fed up with team’s moaning about the refs and the tired concept of ‘the spirit of the game’, he kicks off. What spirit?

In the Chamber, D’Arcy and NZ Herald scribe Alex Powell touch on the dead spirit of sport, who actually cheats in golf and a look back at Monday’s F1 race - a success for Liam Lawson?

Big thanks to GJ Gardner Homes - New Zealand's most trusted home builder.

Speaker 1 (00:09):
You're listening to a podcast from News Talks. It'd be
follow this and our wide range of podcasts now on iHeartRadio.
This is Sportsfix Howard by News Talks.

Speaker 2 (00:20):
It'd be why hello there, well go on end of
the Sports Fix podcast. My name's Darcy waller Grave. That's
our pleasure to be delivering the Fix to you on
a Tuesday, the twenty ninth of July twenty twenty five.
Thanks pretty much. DJ Gardner homes New Zealand's most trusted
home builder for climbing on board the Sports Fix, featuring

(00:41):
in Today's Potty Cameron. George joins Us is the CEO
of the one New Zealand Warriores. No, not around their
shaky start because my administrators don't really engage themselves in
the game on the part, but around his idea that
the Anzac Day clash that involves the worry should always

(01:01):
be here in New Zealand. Why. I've got some opinions
plainly around the dodgy nature of the spirit of the
game call and complaining about referees. It's a lot of
what I took out of the weekend start your ranging.
More on that later and then Alex Powell out of
the New Zealand held sports news writer joins us to

(01:24):
talk about the big sports stories of the day and
of course race cars because you know always race cars. Hey,
thanks pretty much for listening. Let's get amongst other news.
Starting the Sport News today is the annual Downtraive. The
Warriors are set to continue, but the Anzac Day Bath

(01:46):
has been moved to Wellington. CEO Cam George thinks the fixture,
though should remain in New Zealand permanently.

Speaker 3 (01:54):
Up until a couple of years ago it was really
a challenge to get the game back in the New Zealand.
But the NRL, I think, you know, when they absolutely
looked at it with clear eyes, they could understand why should.

Speaker 2 (02:06):
We here based on this year's result which was a
good and maybe they should just not worry about where
they play it, but just don't even play the storm
keewis to Forest Lows. Clearer carries no way of expectation
as he returns to the pool the world champion Singapore.
He current four hundred meters individual medley title holder, has

(02:30):
shrugged off any thoughts of finals performance anxiety.

Speaker 4 (02:34):
I don't think there's any added pressure or anything, you know,
that I think I need to uphold in the raining champ.
Obviously we've got Leon Mushan who's the war record holder,
and the rest of the field has closed the gap
between us and him.

Speaker 2 (02:49):
As to your forests, a marlin very quick through the water.
And on the subject of fish, Matt Fish is tip
to pick up his first Test cap and as part
of the Black Caps angling for another quick bowler to
add to the ranks. Michael brace Will reckons he's got
a bit of fizz about.

Speaker 5 (03:06):
Him, brings a lot of energy and it's really exciting
to see them in here running in and bowling click
in the nets.

Speaker 4 (03:13):
There's not too many guys lanning up to face them.

Speaker 2 (03:15):
Spoken sporting styles, You're welcome, use a bean.

Speaker 1 (03:20):
It's Sportsfix with Dancy Valdegrave.

Speaker 2 (03:24):
One thing that the Weekend of Sport taught us all
like we didn't know already. People loved the wingin moment
when decisions don't go their way, be it the fans,
be it the players, be it the coaches, be at
the organization. If they don't like what happened, they'll ever
crack Rugby. Australia are going to World Rugby for a
Please explain around the lack of a penalty before the

(03:49):
winning try scored by the British and Irish Lions. Now,
whether the referee was correct or incorrect, whether the people
in the box were correct or incorrect when they looked
at that decision. The fact that the matter is they
made the call and the British and Irish lines try.
I stood. It is an annoying fact of watching rugby

(04:12):
that the referee makes some shoddy calls. It's an annoying
fact of rugby that the TMO makes some shody calls.
But that's rugby for you. And if you look at
the rules of rugby Law six Match Officials Law six' FIVE,
a the referee is the sole judge of fact and
of lord during a. Match the referee must apply the

(04:35):
laws of the game fairly in every. Match he is
the sole. Judge although that gets very muddy worth. Tmos
so The australians, Lost maybe they should have tried winning
the game before it came down to the. Crunch the
other moaning going on at the moment involves The english cricket.
Team The english offered a draw early. Doors The indian

(04:57):
said no, Thanks we've got a couple of blokes out
there who would like to score their. Tons anyone got
a problem with? THAT i haven't got a problem with.
That and then of course the pointed handshake from B
In stokes at the, end and everyone's talking about the
spirit of the, game which incidentally reads its ugly head
and the rugby laws as. Well start with the spirit

(05:18):
of the. Game maybe at a schoolboy, level maybe at
a lower club, level but beyond that there is no.
Spirit there is a book of, laws apply the rules
to the playing of the, game and forget about. Spirit
there is no. Spirit there are.

Speaker 1 (05:34):
Just laws dissecting the sporting. Agenda It's sportsfix With Darcy
waldgrave and it's.

Speaker 2 (05:41):
Warm welcome To Cameron, GEORGE ceo of the one At
New Zealand Dot, worries The Sports fix. Podcast so you'd
like THE Anzac day class to be here In New
zealand on a permanent. BASIS Anzac, Australia New. Zealand why
can't we? Share isn't it for both of?

Speaker 1 (06:00):
Us?

Speaker 3 (06:02):
Yeah, Absolutely but they certainly have enough and ample content
and fixtures In australia on that special day And New
zealand deserves the. Same so that's always been my argument
for the last few, years and given this is our
third year back here In New, ZEALAND i see a
permanent fixture on the calendar here and we should always
have that game here and to have it In wellington

(06:26):
just is a real privilege for us BECAUSE i feel
like that we've been able to share that special day
and game and an event not only.

Speaker 1 (06:37):
With all of, them but.

Speaker 3 (06:38):
With Christ church last year and Now, Wellington so it
means well to us to be there in the capital.

Speaker 2 (06:43):
City what kind of traction have you got with THE
nrl around making that a permanent.

Speaker 3 (06:47):
Fixture well, again you, KNOW i sought advice on it
a game this, year and, LOOK i really appreciate THE nrl.
SUPPORT i think they believe the same as me That
New zealand deserves An Anzact day. Fixture you know there's
two In australia and one, here so for the games,

(07:08):
PRINT i think that's a really respectful thing to do
for a special.

Speaker 2 (07:12):
Day, Yeah i'm presuming that the players are all on,
board the coaching, staff everyone would like to the stamp
and so they can really hang their hat on this.

Speaker 3 (07:19):
Day. Yeah, well, look at the end of the, day
we don't necessarily go ask anyone, else would just do
what we feel right for the game and FOR. Nrl
so at our, CLUB i think we're very worthy of
holding a picture on that day and that's the way it,
is and we're very very.

Speaker 1 (07:36):
Happy to announce.

Speaker 3 (07:37):
It, wellington we'll host the next.

Speaker 2 (07:38):
One being, cheeky i'd suggest maybe you should say we'll
host every game we, can but On Anzac, day don't
Let melbourne play with a little Unfair, ah.

Speaker 1 (07:48):
Look at the other.

Speaker 3 (07:48):
Day who cares what what's happening across out side of the.
Ditch as long as you, know we do what's right
for our fans and our, country and that's really.

Speaker 2 (07:56):
Important is there a good saleable prospect as far as
moving to Christ church or To wellington or everybody, else
they'll be keenly. Contestable Not Cameron.

Speaker 3 (08:08):
WELL i think this, picture given the nature of, it
the importance of it To New, zealand It's New zealand's
game AND i always had a plan that if we
got it, back you, know the first time we'll be
at home at Out Smart. Stadium and THEN i thought
Christ church was a good fit for a last year
and then now the capital. City so we've been able

(08:29):
to taken around a couple of different locations AND i
feel it's the right thing to do For New zealand
and that's exactly what we're.

Speaker 2 (08:35):
Doing and as far as moving the, locations plainly you're
based In, penrose you're An auckland based, team but you've
been quite free and letting the team play. Nationwide so
when someone gets that next, here whatever it may, be
does that affect the amount of other fixtures you'll move
out Of Auckland.

Speaker 3 (08:52):
City, no it doesn't effect. ANYTHING i do it WHEN
i try, it and we do it for the right.
Reason so It's New zealand's game and we're A New
zealand club and we representing the country and we're very
proud of that on this special.

Speaker 2 (09:05):
Day and you've obviously. Tried you've got a back, now
but previous incarnations hasn't really fell on accepting ears wanting
to have this. Here as he, said we deserve one
game over the weekend over that. Weekend have you tried this.
Previously you've been around for a, while Our.

Speaker 3 (09:21):
Cameron, look once we got through being away for a
couple of, YEARS i felt it was the right time
for THE nrl to commit to having a game On
Anzac day In New, zealand so for whatever reason it
hasn't been here in the past is not for. Me for,
me it was about trying to fix it and we're
just proud to have it here and showcase it Throughout

(09:45):
New zealand as we have over the last three.

Speaker 2 (09:47):
Years and on the side themselves probably stinging a wee
bit after what happened in the, weekend but you still
think they're going to sit around and get in that
top four and carry it on because the season so
far has been. Great just a bit of a, Wobble
but as A, CEO i suppose you don't interfere in
rugby league playing matters to.

Speaker 3 (10:04):
YOU i certainly singing the word i'd heard on the
weekend because we, expect you, know to have, better better
outcomes and that's great for our footag club to have
is hurting us because it means so much to, us
and that takes a while to build that underbelly of
you expectation and wanting to win all the. Time and

(10:26):
so we're getting. There there's a lot still to work,
on but you, know the boys are doing a good
job and you, know the best thing of our food
Is we've got to quick turn around into The dolphins
this weekend and it'll be another good test and it's
something that's we just got to aim up for And
i'm looking forward To friday.

Speaker 1 (10:43):
Night, now The chamber is now in session On Sports fix.

Speaker 2 (10:47):
And The Tamer now with old Mate Alex. Powell you
don't mind me calling you old, mate Dear, alex As
i've only known you about what a year and a.

Speaker 5 (10:53):
Half i'm on the old. Bet but mate's, Fine.

Speaker 2 (10:56):
Okay that's, good all. Right fresh Mate Alex powell joins
The sports newsright out of The New Zealand, herald looking
across the day's, stories and we go back in history
a bit because we're Both formula one. Trade it's more
on that, Shortly i'm interested in this story that develops
Around Donald trump and his continued ability to cheat at.

(11:18):
Golf have you ever cheated at, Golf Alex?

Speaker 5 (11:21):
Powell the short answer is. No the long answers, no
BECAUSE i don't play. Golf are we surprised with Anything
Tamil trump does along those? Lines there's a great, Book
commander In, cheat which is basically about his ability to
cheat on the golf.

Speaker 2 (11:33):
Course it's quite phenomenal more than anything, else not that
it makes, headlines but he continues to do it and denies.
It another complaining story That i've already editorialized on is
the nature of the spirit of the game in both
cricket and been. Rugby i'm a little tired of people
bringing up the concept of the spirit of the game

(11:54):
because from WHAT i can tell in this day and,
Age alex it doesn't. Exist it's too professional for, that.

Speaker 5 (12:00):
RIGHT i, mean you've brought up the cricket there with
What england did Against. India In england's, case it seems
to just be the spirit of cricket applies when we
want to remember the run out With Johnny bearstell and
The ashes a couple of years ago and how much
they moralized over. That BUT i thought The english one was.
Ridiculous you've Got Ben stokes going at The indian batters
saying do you really want to score A test one
hundred Against Harry brook And benduckett when you're the one

(12:21):
who's brought them on to. Bowl it was just An
england captain throwing as. Toys you get to the, RUGBY
i mean spirit of sport there that you're asking it
to be decided by the interpretation of a. Rule SO
i don't really have too much reproblem with how it.
Goes but like the spirit of, sport like we love
sport because it's about a, contest and the cornerstone of
that is respecting your, opposition yes or?

Speaker 3 (12:42):
No?

Speaker 5 (12:43):
Yes and do you feel like that's sort of being
contravened by what we've seen over the past couple of.

Speaker 2 (12:47):
Days, POSSIBLY i know what you. Mean you've got to
respect the, opposition but to what? Length respect them to
the letter of the lord and you go beyond. That
it doesn't matter what part of respect do you?

Speaker 5 (12:58):
MEAN i, Suppose, Alex, yeah you've made a good point
there about respecting them to the letter of the. LAW
i think the answer there, is don't have laws that
contravene the. Spirit THEN i Think i'll have this argument
to the end of time with. EVERYBODY i just think
it's such an archaic. Concept maybe back in EVEN.

Speaker 2 (13:13):
Wg grace's, DAY i, mean what was the spirit of
Cricket when he got bold out and put the bails
back on. Again he had to watch me bat not you.
Bally that says everything to me about the spirit of the.

Speaker 5 (13:25):
Game, Right, YEAH i mean it's The Spurader. Cricket could
be at signed podcast for, hours couldn't.

Speaker 2 (13:30):
It let's talk about what really occupied our time over the.
WEEKEND i know it's been. Done it was Early monday,
Morning New zealand, time BUT i can't help. Myself what
a great weekend For Liam Lawson in The Racing bulls
cast Spy Frankel champ is a wonderful. Trick The Belgian
Grand prix always brings rain and, chaos and this Time

(13:50):
liam got the job done in a very downbeat. Manner
there was no, issues there was no. Trouble he just
drove his car quickly as quickly as he, could got
to the, end took the. Points job, done.

Speaker 5 (14:01):
Right it was a very professional, job wasn't. It it feels
LIKE i, mean because let's not forget he's still got
less than a, season a full season worth of experience under.
IT i think he might have just crossed over that,
Actually but it was a proper race weekend from no,
fuss no, nonsense come and qualify, well which we've talked
about was a big. Problem he couldn't qualify. Well he's
doing that now and he got some points for. IT i,
mean what else do you?

Speaker 2 (14:21):
WANT i don't think you need much, else maybe just more.
Points what about the argument With, Hadja, well not an actual,
argument but the argument on track looks Like liam's. Winning
but do you think Maybe Isaac hadjar is we are
they're telling fibbs at Racing bulls around the nature of
his lack of.

Speaker 5 (14:40):
PACE i don't, know because racing, balls when you deal with,
them they're a really good. Organization everything works from the top.
Down that's Why Lauren mecki's got the promotion To Red
bull And Christian order was that because they knew what he,
did they knew how he did. It But Isaac hadgaw's
excuse of getting losing a place To Lean lawson and
then suffering a late pit stop as a, result and
then falling further and further down the grid for a

(15:01):
power unit. ISSUE i don't know IF i. Buy if
you think back To, Canada Lean lawson did genuinely have
a power issue and lost places off the, line and
then they just retired the car because it wasn't worth
risking it him trying to push from the back with
a dodgy. Engine So i've HAD i had the same.
Thing why did they leave him out there for forty four?

Speaker 2 (15:17):
Laps, hey what About Yuki? Sinoda Read? Bull What max
finished in fourth? Position not entirely happy about that after
mcclarence laid waste to them, All Muki sinoda there or?
Thereabouts here or not or doesn't. Matter.

Speaker 5 (15:31):
WELL i think it's really interesting that he actually qualified,
seven which is his best qualifying position At Red. Bull
but it's immediately, after as we just spoke, About Lauren
meckis goes up as Former Racing balls, Boss like you
think about what you've heard from How rebel operated Under
Christian horner and how it was all About Max forstappen
and that second driver can just get left. Behind but
If Lauren mecki's has gone in and put his arm
around you again said, no you're very important to this,

(15:52):
team and he has a bit of a lift as a.
RESULT i think that's a very good explanation for what we.
Saw like he didn't do it in The Grand, prix
but it's going to be a work in. Progress you
just worry if there's enough time for him to sort
of keep his job next.

Speaker 2 (16:02):
Year you wouldn't think he. Would honda is GOING i
think that takes him with all Those formula one on
that the fight at the top between the Two papaya
cars and. McLaren this just gets better and, better and
basically it finished within the third, turn didn't it WHEN
ps three took that lead and never let it.

Speaker 5 (16:23):
GO i mean the number of Times i've come on
here and raved About Oscar. PIASTREE i just think he's.
Amazing you look at what he's done in the time
he's been in that. Car this guy could be one
of the all time. Greats you feel For. Landon he's
done a lot of the donkey work at that team
for a long period of, time and then as soon
as they're in a position to fight for a driver's,
title he gets you sert by his, teammate who's his.

Speaker 2 (16:43):
Junior you wait Until Alex polo joins the team and
after His indy car exploits that boat is almost, Unstoppable Alex,
powell thanks very much for your time for joining us
here and the. Chamber now off you, Go.
