Speaker 1 (00:09):
You're listening to a podcast from News Talks ed B.
Follow this and our Wide Ranger podcasts now on iHeartRadio.

Speaker 2 (00:17):
This is Sportsfix Howard by News Talk sat.

Speaker 3 (00:20):
BE sending you a great big audio cuddle pie. Welcome
on into the Fixed podcast. My name is Darcy Walter Grave. Yeah,
it's Tuesday. It's the twelfth of August twenty twenty five.
Coming up on today's program and thanks very much to
DJ Gardener Holmes, New Zealand's most trusted home builder for
climbing on board. We'll be talking with Kelly Jackson, the

(00:42):
netball from the Pulse and the Silver Ferns, who is
off over the ditch to play for the Firebirds and
the Ossie Super Netball comp next year. I paid tribute
to the late great Peter Lester, amazing sailor, stunning commentator
and just such a good human van You'll be missed, Pete,
and will be joined in the chamber by Chris Reed

(01:04):
from the New Zealand Herald. Chris has been all over
the release of America's Cut Protocol, what that means and
what happens next. That's our plan, so let's do it.
In other news, some sports stars spoke, we hit record
Silver Fern and pulsnet Or. Kelly Jackson has picked up

(01:26):
an Ossie Netball contract. The defender is leaving Wellington for
a taste of life in the heat, but she'll miss Wellie,
albeit temporarily. The contractors for one season only will not
affect her ability to play for the firms.

Speaker 4 (01:42):
Love the Pulse with all my soul and had loved
my last six years here and can't hit them enough
for all opportunities and the growth that I've given me.
But I feel like now it's the right time.

Speaker 3 (01:53):
Springbok coach Rassi Erasmus has punted team naming protocols deeper
into the stand. I'm not afraid of a Tuesday announcement
before Saturday fixture has now gone and released as twenty
three on Monday for this weekend Wallaby's Clash and Johannesburg.

Speaker 5 (02:10):
So why get the speculation out of the way and
all that, so you guys can actually speak a little
about the team that I'll play, so the team knows
the lad who's playing some you know. Getting this out
of the way, we can just focus on the real training,
wild preparing.

Speaker 6 (02:27):
And Chris Wood all Whites Skipper is confident that Lebarato
Kacachi will hit the Premier League after moving from Italy
to play for Wreck, some of the next tier down.

Speaker 7 (02:39):
He debuted over the weekend and impressed.

Speaker 8 (02:42):
I watched it and I think that's a great move
for him. It's a sort inside the English door, ready
to take the progression into the Premier League when he
gets the chance, because I believe he will get the
chance sooner over later.

Speaker 3 (02:53):
And there are some spoken slices of some sporting stories.

Speaker 7 (02:56):
You're welcome news.

Speaker 2 (02:59):
It's Sportsfix with Dancy Waldegrave.

Speaker 3 (03:04):
We lost a good one over the weekend in sailing,
in broadcasting in New Zealand, veil Peter Lester. What a
tragic loss, What a stunning human being. What a hole
it's left in the sailing community. He was a competitor,
he was a commentator, he was a pundit. He was
everything to sailing here in New Zealand. And he was

(03:26):
a man that always gave you the time of day.
He was a man that built the right to have
an opinion. With the volume of work that had gone through.
He would call a spade a spade. He was very
frank with his opinions. He always gave me the attention
and the time of day, and loved speaking with Peter
about the vagaries of the America's Cup, in fact, all sailing,

(03:49):
and he embraced my sometimes interesting opinions on sailing. But
he would never criticize, He wouldn't put you down. He
would just share his knowledge and as a number of
people have said, he made the almost impossible complexity of
the America's Cup world sound incredibly simple. You'll be missed,
ped Leicester from a broadcasting point of view, from a

(04:12):
sailing point of view, but more so by your friends
and your family. Rest easy, Peder, Leicester, You'll be missed.

Speaker 9 (04:21):
Dissecting the sporting agenda. It's Sportsfix with Darcy Waldegrave.

Speaker 3 (04:27):
And as well and welcome to the Sports Fixed podcast.
Now to net bought a silver fern. Poulson seen to
be firebird Kelly Jackson. Goodday, Kelly.

Speaker 4 (04:35):
Hi, how's it going.

Speaker 7 (04:36):
It's going good.

Speaker 3 (04:37):
I'm not going to Australia like you are, but it's
going good. Here's some news for you out of the
fire after the Firebirds for twenty twenty six. I suppose
first and foremost you you were flirting this what back
in May. I think it was reported that you turned
down offers and moved from Australia to stay with the Ferns,
so this has been bubbling for quite some time.

Speaker 8 (04:59):
Yeah.

Speaker 4 (04:59):
Well, obviously over the last couple of years, I've had
various offers to head over, but ultimately Payfulessilver Services be
my number one. But I've been fortunate enough that revised
their eligibility and ademption criterias and processes, so it really
has opened the door and I went through the adymption
process was successful and I was able to sign a

(05:22):
contract with the Queensland Fibers, which is really exciting.

Speaker 7 (05:25):
What do they want to know?

Speaker 3 (05:26):
What was the process? Won't tell us what you need
to do, so what hopes did you have to jump through?

Speaker 4 (05:32):
Ultimately, it was just a lot of discussions with no
Lean and our high performance staff at the Silver Ferns
to make sure that we're all aligned, that Australian clubs
are aligned with what the Silver Ferns want and their
vision and their program, and just making sure that it's
ultimately the best decision for us in our careers and

(05:53):
also that it benefits it with New Zealand and it
will like if we go over there and play against
and we'll got the ability to play against the best
nip balls and the world week in and week out.
It's I'm going to help us go on and off
the court so that it's an opportunity. I'm really excited
at all.

Speaker 3 (06:09):
So when the exemptions started playing out, when Grace scott
Hers did the firebirds ring you up and go quick
get an exemption?

Speaker 7 (06:17):
Did you run with it instead?

Speaker 3 (06:18):
I'm going to have a crack.

Speaker 7 (06:19):
How did that operate?

Speaker 2 (06:22):
Well?

Speaker 4 (06:22):
These discussions have been happening for a few months now,
so it's actually really nice to have it all out
in the open. The exeption processes started months to ago,
and yeah, I've just been working through that and working
through my options overseas and making sure that I'm hitting
to a club that this the lines with myself and

(06:43):
also willing to help me in terms of my national goals.
So I'm really happy with my decision and fathers really
to get a month at Brisbane Heat. It's going to
be a contrast to the Wellington wins, but really looking
forward to it.

Speaker 7 (06:59):
You love it.

Speaker 3 (06:59):
So you've been in negotiations, so you were reasonably sure
that the eligibility clause from Netball News and was going
to be us through that's why you were engaged.

Speaker 4 (07:12):
Oh, I guess Grace sitting over last year really put
the heat on Nipple New Zealand in terms of them
having to make a decision and assess the options and
whether it's dorgal to let Silver Ferns players over there,
and just really grateful that they have allowed us to
do so. And I think it's really going to help

(07:33):
the game and ultimately help the Silver Ferns.

Speaker 3 (07:36):
Do you think with yourself and Grace on there's going
to be quite a few Ferns now going Oh I
fancy a crack at that. I mean, you've talked amongst
the Polese ladies. Have you talked amongst the Silver Ferns
are out what the feeling is around the group now
that they can possibly.

Speaker 7 (07:52):
Go to Australia.

Speaker 4 (07:55):
I think we will see a couple over there. It's
obviously a confidential process and everyone's out there to protect
themselves and protect their clubs. So I guess we'll find
out in the next few weeks what movements are going
to be. But you know, whatever movement's happened and players
who go to Australia, it just gives opportunity for players

(08:16):
in New Zealand have a crack at as your premiership
contract in game more court time than get a starting
given spots.

Speaker 3 (08:24):
So you know you'll been talking, but you can't let
the cat out of the bag because you don't want.

Speaker 7 (08:28):
To ruin your relationships.

Speaker 3 (08:30):
But there's there's devenue foremost and conversations here. No it's
not no, no, no, okay, you as asked. That's the media.
We can't help ourselves. Good things come to those who ask.

Speaker 2 (08:42):
They exactly your your career.

Speaker 3 (08:44):
To date has been astonishing, what you've won, what you've
been awarded, and you said before that what's good for
your career? So at the right young age of what
twenty eight, this is just a one off.

Speaker 7 (08:58):
You wait for one year, two years, but you're likely
to go back.

Speaker 3 (09:00):
Where does that fit in the green to scale because
you've got a lot of nepple still to play.

Speaker 4 (09:04):
Kelly, I've signed a one year track, but you know,
looking back on my career, I've been in this competition
for eleven years, been five years of the Magic, six
years at Pulse and have very been very fortunate and
the opportunity both teams been able to give me and
the development and growth growth that provided also. But for me,

(09:26):
I just think it's, you know, a really cool opportunity,
a really cool life experience that's never lived overseas, so
that's going to be really fun. And just been how
to go over there, put myself out of my comfort
zone and really challenge myself for there's something I'm looking
forward to.

Speaker 2 (09:42):
The Chamber is now in session on Sportsfax and.

Speaker 3 (09:46):
The chamber door swings open and Chris Ree from New
Zealand Herald is there waiting after scurrying back from rural
New Zealand yourch squadron.

Speaker 7 (09:56):
Chris, welcome and the Chamber you have news.

Speaker 10 (09:59):
I do have news. We finally have some rules for
the America's Cup, which has been a long time coming.
But they signed the signed the document about a couple
of hours ago with three pm on Tuesday. Yeah, and
there's a lot a lot of changes. The nationality rules loosened,
there's going to be a woman on board every team,

(10:21):
less sailors on board, they're cutting cyclaws completely, they're gonna
have battery powered.

Speaker 7 (10:27):
Yeah, there's a lot going on. Man.

Speaker 3 (10:29):
Well let's start from the start first and foremost. When
you talk about the eligibility. This is something to interest
a lot of people, and I'm sure that Peter Berling
was peering in and having a listen, what's the skinny there.

Speaker 10 (10:44):
Yeah, So the draft protocol that got released in May
had the rule was you can have two non nationals
as long as they didn't sail in Barcelona. The rule
that has come out in the confirmed protocol is you
can have two non nationals full stop, which means Pete
Berlin can sale for Lunar Rossa if they so choose. Wow,

(11:05):
make things very interesting. Luna Rossa have very good young
talent coming through. If you watch sale GP, Jugerio Tita
is probably the guy leading that, and that makes things
very interesting for Luna Rosa because now they've got these
two really good young sailors coming through who won the
Youth America's Cup in Barcelona. Do they commit to them

(11:27):
or do they bring Pete Berling in a.

Speaker 3 (11:29):
Reason part you put up for that as to why
they altered or adjusted that law.

Speaker 10 (11:33):
I believe it was something that the challengers probably fought for.
Grant Dalton did say he still wasn't sure about that rule,
but it was a compromise.

Speaker 7 (11:45):
So so they all come together. It's just the.

Speaker 3 (11:49):
Holder of the Cup, the Warren's on yacht squadron, the
defenders or everybody, the whole group of them.

Speaker 10 (11:57):
Yeah, this year has been a little bit different. Normally
you would have the defender and the Challenger of record,
who kind of negotiates on behalf of all challenges. But
by the sounds of things, all the challenges have been
given the opportunity to kind of have their say and
they've now bought in this new partnership pretty basically called
America's Cup Partnership, who are going to be in charge

(12:19):
of governing the America's Cup, basically taking that responsibility away
from the defender moving forward, which makes things very very interesting.
Now you know, the defender won't be choosing the venues,
they won't be in charge of event management. It makes
things very very different.

Speaker 7 (12:37):
Who's controlling that.

Speaker 10 (12:39):
I don't believe they've appointed anyone yet. I think it's
going to be a combination of representatives from the teams and.

Speaker 7 (12:46):
Appointed by everybody.

Speaker 3 (12:48):
It's not just a Dalton for example, because they've got
it right now appointing it.

Speaker 7 (12:52):
It's like this is an independent group that are looking
after the running of this.

Speaker 10 (12:56):
Yeah, I believe so, I believe so it'll be a
combined effort. So yeah, it'll be very very interesting to
see how things change going forward. Grant Dalton called it,
I believe it was like the boldest move in America's
Cup history. And you know a lot of the America's
Cup sort of scuttle, But is what goes on behind
the scenes, what teams are doing to sort of stay secret,

(13:21):
and now they're sort of lifting the curtain.

Speaker 7 (13:23):
More and sole GP has been awesome, isn't it?

Speaker 3 (13:25):
Is this like slap these guys a wee bit barcked
bit them on the calves.

Speaker 10 (13:30):
I don't know if that's the case. They are very
different competitions, but.

Speaker 3 (13:34):
You've woken up to the fact that it's modern and
it's new and it's engaging.

Speaker 7 (13:37):
It's like we've got to change.

Speaker 3 (13:38):
We stick around on the same thing over and over again.
It's not going to work so directly from sale GP,
maybe not, but it's definitely encouraged change absolutely.

Speaker 10 (13:50):
And you look at the there's going to be six
people on board. That sixth person is just going to
be a guest. So media dignitaries, influences and Grant altinnactually
said that's looking at the future and bringing an a
younger audience. You get an influencer on who's got more followers,

(14:12):
mister Beast. Yeah, you get mister Beast on there.

Speaker 3 (14:15):
Who's got you know, mister Beast, neither do I, but
my fourteen year old tells me that miss is the
skinny and instagrame YouTube. That'd be that someone like that
on board, get their phone out, flick it out, and
all of a sudden, you're bringing the competition to a
whole new audience. Being the first on board now to

(14:38):
be full of politicians and royals.

Speaker 7 (14:40):
So one hen there on board. That's just great news.
And this is something that has been pushed at towards.

Speaker 3 (14:48):
They've had Youth America's Cup, Female America's Cup, but now
actually made that step because sol GP have already been
doing it.

Speaker 10 (14:54):
They have Yeah, and it'll be interesting to see what
role that sailor plays, whether or not they're going to
be sort of in a strategizing role like we've seen
on sale GP, whether they're going to be drivers, whether
they're going to be trimmers or flat controllers, or whether
you know, it differs around the teams. It's not out
of the realms of possibility that we see in all

(15:14):
female team. You know, there's no cyclers or grinders, and
that's sort of been the line in the America's Cup
for the past few cycles in regards to women is
that the power thing will be different. Now you can
believe that, you can not believe that, but that's been
the line they've run. So now all the power stuff
is done by batteries. You know, nothing stopping a team from.

Speaker 7 (15:38):
Entering likely in New Zealand.

Speaker 10 (15:40):
I think you have to look at Live Mackay, the
sales GP strategist. She was one of the helms for
Team New Zealand and the Women's America's Cup. Joe la
similar boat Erica Dawson.

Speaker 3 (15:53):
Absolute legend, absolute legend. That wouldn't surprise me in the slightest.

Speaker 10 (15:57):
Yeah, we have some very very talented sailors here and
I guess the important thing is they're also continuing the
Women's America's Cup and the Youth America's Cup alongside what
changes they've made to the big boats. So it's great
for you know, progression and developing the sailors.

Speaker 7 (16:17):
This is it. They got to look to the future
because that's where it's at.

Speaker 10 (16:20):
Yeah. If you look at the all the changes in
this protocol, it's it's a very smart protocol looking toward
the future.

Speaker 3 (16:26):
And lastly, I'm sure there's more, but let's finish it
on the batteries.

Speaker 7 (16:30):
You touched on it.

Speaker 3 (16:31):
But this is that there's there's no more mammals.

Speaker 10 (16:35):
Yeah, yeah, no, no more human power. By the sounds
of things, they're good. I don't I think we will
have to wait and see. It'll be all boats kind
of going towards a similar power source. So we saw
in Barcelona the American Magic went with recumbent cycles, so

(16:55):
their cyclers were leaning back, sitting down, whereas every other
team had your more usual sort of exercycle type cycles.
And I guess the argument with that was which one
provided more power. I don't think we're going to have
that issue now that we've got everyone running batteries so
good that I don't know.

Speaker 2 (17:16):
We'll have to wait and.

Speaker 10 (17:16):
See whether or not effects how competitive things are. I
think what's interesting with this one is it brings it
back to the saling. The best teams are still going
to win, so we will see.

Speaker 7 (17:30):
That's what we're after.

Speaker 3 (17:30):
Chris Reeve, thanks very much for that Normally in the
chamber we talk about a number of topics, but this
as fresh as they come. You've been all over it,
so we'll just jettus and the rest. We'll carry on
with the America's Cup always a story.

Speaker 7 (17:43):
And for you, mister Chris Reeve, out of the chamber,
you go.

Speaker 3 (17:46):
Thank you.
