Speaker 2 (00:21):
There is the Sports Fix the Tuesday, the ninth of
September twenty twenty five. My name is Darcy Waldgrave. I'm
here for however long it takes. Lined up for you.
In today's show, Furtison fun coach with GJ. Cardenholmes, new
Zealand's most trusted home builders. We'll talk with ex All
Black coach John Hart about the nature of change with
(00:43):
a spring Box side and the possible nature of change
for the All Blacks. Later on in the week, I've
got some opinion around the narl and their inability to
change the scheduling. And you'll be surprised at my attitude
I think. And joining us in the chamber for a
week chin wag around sports as new thoughts. There'd be journalists.
(01:04):
His name is Nathan Limb, so let's.
Speaker 3 (01:07):
Get into it. Only do this in other news.
Speaker 2 (01:12):
Today Sports said this Springbok mastermind Rassi Erasmus has been
busy with his selection broadsword. He's asked a number of
last week's defeated twenty three, including the scene appearing and
the elbow. It's nine and ten, so rassy. Why.
Speaker 4 (01:33):
I do think the energy that the guys who came
on maybe changed my mind and I think let's get
some interjected guys onto.
Speaker 3 (01:41):
The field who's never played here before.
Speaker 2 (01:43):
The Black Sticks Wahina, fresh from aging the Australians at
the Oceania Cup are off to the World Cup. They're
avoiding qualifiers for now and the national body have saved
some shekels, but coach Phil Burrow says they need quality
international competition before the big dance. I need to spend
some of the savings they've just made.
Speaker 5 (02:04):
We don't stupid about it, but we also want to
make sure we give the enough content we need. We
still want to play some international games that gives us
the best experience because the jumper is quite messive. If
you're playing TA do nations and all of a sudden
you got to play a Tier one nation.
Speaker 2 (02:17):
And a brit called Phil Eggsley has added a circumnavigation
of Iceland to his marathon swimming CV he circled Britain.
He's had a record five hundred and teen k swim
along the Yukon River as well. And now this which
is custom part of us done through salt water dehydration.
(02:38):
The trick to his success though well, Phil tells us
it's fat to consume up to thirteen thousand calories a day. Huge.
Speaker 4 (02:48):
I've talked about ten kilos of just pure fats, basic
body baits, insulating, look like a field blubber or whale
blubber you want it.
Speaker 2 (02:56):
So it sounds really kind of contradictory, but poored if one.
Speaker 3 (02:59):
Be as fat as possible and perfectest posible.
Speaker 2 (03:01):
And that's what sport said.
Speaker 3 (03:06):
Dissecting the sporting agenda. It's Sportsfax with Darcy Waldgrave.
Speaker 2 (03:12):
And it's well. Welcoming now to John Hart as we
discussed some rugby from last week, some team selections from
this week and what the future holds. Good John, Hi, Darcy,
how are you very well looking forward to this weekend?
Like we all are. The team from the Eden Park
Matt very conservative, even though Rasi's had a field day
(03:32):
doing all sorts of strange thing. Where did that conservative
come from that? Why do you think he went in
that direction?
Speaker 6 (03:39):
I think he thought they were good enough to win.
I think the reason I think he picked a team
that he thought would win. I think he thought they
could dominate in the physical area and you know that's
where he would have got a big surprise because the
All Blacks really matched him physically, and the young forwards,
you know, like Parker and Satiti stood up and you know,
(04:02):
and Savia continued his very good form and you know,
to to buy who's in his full position. I thought
all year that you know, he's the best lock in
the country playing at Sex and I was delighted to
see what he did coming back and at Locke and
you know, the All Black forwards all round played very
very well. I think a little bit of easing and
(04:24):
the scrum in the second half which would be a
bit of a worry, and the.
Speaker 2 (04:28):
Look on the face of to provide. I don't think
i've seen it All Black enjoy himself so much out
in the middle there. He was loving every engagement. He
was absolutely punned for it.
Speaker 6 (04:36):
Yeah, he's an important part of you all back team.
I think he brings a lot of energy and he's
very accurate now and he's a very good tactician leaning
out wise, so he's you know, his game is growing.
He's becoming a real dominant personality within that team on
the field.
Speaker 2 (04:58):
The changes made this time around by Ra Marasmus, you
touched on a couple of those changes. Is this very
much looking for the next couple of years and giving
these guys a run, because it does seem like baby bathwater.
They've really gotten rid of a lot of people Watson's drive.
Do you think John behind these changes?
Speaker 6 (05:18):
Well, I have no doubt he was very keen to
win at Eaton Park, and no doubt he'd be very
keen to winning Wellington because you know he loses in Wellington.
He's out of a rugby championship, so his season's on
the line next Saturday at Wellington. So he's obviously decided
to cut away the conservative approach that he had last week.
(05:41):
And look, he's some of those players are very exciting,
but I'm just not sure the continuity, the change in selection,
whether they can be as fluent as they'll need to be.
But I'm sure there'll be a little more adventure showing
with the with their with their backs and honestly, i'd
expect their forwards to play a lot better than they
(06:01):
did last week.
Speaker 2 (06:02):
Is there a lot better as in just slightly more
focused slightly more more accurate. Did they need any more aggression?
Where else did you see places for them to lift? John?
Speaker 6 (06:10):
Well, their line out was ordinary, you know, and South
Africa's line out is not ordinary, you know. And they
made they lost all they shouldn't lose, and so I'm
thinking some of those things will just be real focus
for them. And the physicality they'll know that's the game
that never changes. They'll have that. But you know, it's
(06:33):
all about putting pressure on the opposition, and they didn't
really put pressure on the opposition. They made mistakes, they
were dropping stuff that some of it were schoolboy stuff.
So I mean, I think they really will. There'll be
a step up from them on Saturday, and we're going
to have to match that.
Speaker 2 (06:49):
More of the same from selection wise. Of Scott Robertson,
I was lifted at the start, well not the start
at the end of last week when I saw the team,
because it wasn't a knee jerk reaction to that loss
against Argentina. He stuck with some of the combinations, stuck
with that consistency, which is very helpful for you trying
to develop a start on a team. Do you see
(07:10):
that altering or faltering much in the next couple of
days when the All Black team comes out.
Speaker 6 (07:15):
John, No, not really. I think he's showing his hand.
I think he's found now, you know. I mean he
played Parker at eight against Argentina. I think he looks
far more at home at six, and we're two pre
bigh back into Locke. I think the pack will be
much the same. Obviously, Cody Taylor will be out, and
(07:35):
he may swap around some of the propping, propping the
four props. Might, you know, might he might play with that,
But I don't think the personnel will change at all
except at hooker and in the backs. Well, Morale will
almost certainly be out by the looks of it. So
if that's the case, you could expect Caleb Clark to
come back in We've still not we're still not great
(07:57):
in the high ball and then you know, or as options.
Of course, is also to consider Damian McKenzie at fallback
and Will Jordan on the wing, which is another possibility,
But look, I don't think that be much change. And
half back half back's interesting because of the injuries. I'm
not just not sure where they are. Ratama and Hotham
possibly coming back but one of the one of the
(08:20):
real good things coming out on Saturday night was Finn
Christie's performance at halfback for the All Blacks, because you know,
he had an excellent game and his work rate was fantastic.
I see one right up said that he threw through
some wild passes. I think there was one. He must
have run about one hundred in the game, So yeah,
I thought he I thought his contribution was very special.
(08:43):
And Bowden Barrett I still think was probably the dominant
player for the All Blacks, and he made the big
plays that counted. The kick for the Rawa, the fifty
twenty two kicked that got them the line out that
won the second try. You know, he was a key
player for them.
Speaker 3 (09:02):
News it's Sports Fix with Dancy Waldegrave.
Speaker 2 (09:08):
The narl are being absolute turds by scheduling the Warriors'
first home final game in quite some time, almost directly
up against the national rugby team in the All Blacks.
You'd think, why did you do that? Why are you
forcing sports fans in New Zealand, and, let's face it,
(09:30):
where rampant to choose between league or rugby. Of course,
with the technology in this day and age, you can
watch both, but you can't watch both live. My knee
reaction as well. The NRL hatus. It's perfectly obvious they
don't like New Zealand. They refuse to acknowledge the South
Island though, won't talk about the possibility of another franchise
(09:52):
to join the NRL. In fact, they'd rather go to
Papu New Guinea and that is a moving train wreck,
than actually move anywhere that's got a decent league fan base.
They've got a horrible pile of individuals that they call
officials that couldn't official their way out of a paper bag.
They basically don't like us, but there is some broadcast
(10:12):
money in there, and a lot of the people in
Australia are actually Warriors fans, so it works quite well
for bums and seats. But I can't think like that,
and I won't think like that with the NRL. It's
not a case of we're doing this to upset news helendars.
We're doing this to climb up the nose of the
All Blacks. They're doing this because it suits their needs.
(10:34):
It's their competition. They call the shots, these are their rules.
Why should they alter, change or adjust anything they do
because of the other game rugby union. I completely get it.
I understand it from a fans point of view. It
climbs right up my backside. But when push comes to shove,
the narl R, the NRL, they do what they want,
(10:58):
when they want, and how they want it. And for that,
quite honestly, they need to be applauded.
Speaker 3 (11:04):
The chamber is now in session on Sportsfax.
Speaker 2 (11:08):
Ani is a criminal who basically keeps doing it over
and over again, even though we should know better. We're
joined now by a recidivus sports broadcaster.
Speaker 4 (11:17):
Where is this going?
Speaker 2 (11:18):
Nathan Lynn who knows better, but he's in the chamber again?
Are you look on your face was priceless. I could
see it was going What are you doing? What are
the Warriors doing? That's the next question, the question for
you. You've been following far too closely for your own health.
Quite frankly, they've got rather a large game coming up
on Saturday, but up against Penrith. The general consensus is
(11:43):
Iceberg's chants and how it's not going to work for them.
It doesn't matter what they do. Are you a little
more positive? Uplifted by this?
Speaker 4 (11:51):
I think they have more than an Iceberg's chance and
how I think it just comes down to whether or
not they can get rid of these concentration lapses and
does it, Darcy, this is the This is the frustrating thing,
right because I've been going to these presses every week
all year, and the last four or five weeks it's
been we can do it if we I see our chances.
(12:11):
We're not making sloppy mistakes, little concentration lapses are letting
us down. And you think that that's something they be
able to sort out. If all it is is concentration lapses.
Speaker 2 (12:20):
Concentration, that's the thing, isn't it.
Speaker 4 (12:23):
That's the problem, and it keeps happening because the Warriors
issue on the weekend again was they were sloppy on attack.
They woul drop balls, There was wayward passes, some decision making,
but it's all stuff that you know, if you have
a cool, clear head, you focused and you know what's next.
These are things that don't happen and shouldn't happen. I'm
not sure if fatigue is starting to play a part
(12:44):
in this, Darcy, given the number of injuries, the players
playing out of position, because they're going to have to
do another reshuffle now with Roco Bury out, So does
chance go chancey? Could Cook start go back and decentertained
to a peaky comes back into the mix. You know,
we have to see. But the Warriors just need to
put a complete game together. If they put a complete
game together and these concentration lapses aren't.
Speaker 2 (13:07):
Then then they've got the way through.
Speaker 4 (13:09):
Then they've got a chance against Penrith. If these concentration
apps continue, they've got no chance and they're gonna get killed.
Speaker 2 (13:15):
How much does this sit with the coaching staff. It's
all very well and good to say. The players the
one that make mistakes. The players are the one that
kind of like wave the attack through to score it
will But how much of this is coaching? Well, are
they not getting the message through? Isn't it their job
to get the message through to the players What we
want is this. It's not the most difficult message in
the world.
Speaker 4 (13:36):
Yeah, but I don't know how much Andrew Webster can
do when he's sitting in the coaches boxes and you
know someone's throwing awayward pass that goes to ground, going.
Speaker 2 (13:44):
To change something, because it's been going on for weeks
and weeks and weeks change change.
Speaker 4 (13:48):
What though they don't have any players everyone.
Speaker 3 (13:51):
I don't know.
Speaker 4 (13:52):
I'm not really putting this on the coaches, to be honest, Darcy.
I think it does fall on the players because it
is just little individual areas and they're upfront and they're
honest about that, and that's what we like. From a
media perspective, that's great, But it does fall on on
individual players and perhaps the leaders in the team.
Speaker 3 (14:07):
I e.
Speaker 4 (14:07):
James Fisher Harris was on the park to be sending
that clear message during the game, and the team knows
what direction they're going in. James is obviously not as
vocal a leader as Mitch Barnett's. I think the Warriors
are definitely missing something there, but we really need James
Fisher Harris to be leading from the front.
Speaker 2 (14:24):
If they get through, if they actually managed to beat Peena,
then look, it could happen because everything might fall into
place and that'd be very warrious to do. So how
do they go for the rest of the playoffs? But
because it doesn't get any easier.
Speaker 4 (14:39):
No, no, it definitely does not. So if they do
beat the Panthers somehow, they all face the loser of
the Storm and the Bulldogs. They will obviously have to
play away from home, and both of these sides you
know the ball. I mean, obviously you don't want to
play the Storm in Melbourne. You want to avoid the
Stellman Melbourne at all costs. But if the Storm do
win that and they end up having to face the
(15:01):
Bulldogs at home, that would probably be the best case
scenario for the Warriors because they had a slightly tighter
affair in terrible condition a few weeks ago, and the
Bulldogs got pants by the Sharks on the weekend going
into these finals games. So yeah, look, it's tough. It's
going to be an uphill battle regardless of which way
around this final series goes. But getting through Penrith will
(15:23):
be the first taskt a monumental one of that.
Speaker 2 (15:26):
And obviously we put this podcast together, recorded it before
the team has been announcer. We don't know who is
in the site. We do know who's in the South
African side for the return. The Wellington fixed the revenge,
talk about waving the acts. He's taking heads off everywhere racing.
Speaker 4 (15:42):
He's come out with a shotgun ras put half the
team down. The back line's gone, and you know what,
I don't I don't know if this is the right move.
I actually really don't rate this from Rasi Erasthmus in
terms of a response, because to me, as a New
Zealand fan, the idea of a fired up Ebenetzabeth who's
angry because he didn't play super well on the weekend
(16:04):
Springboxston play super on that prospect is scary. Man. Having
a player of that experience and that size and that
caliber who was that fired up to me, that scare
and not having to deal with them now I feel
slightly more relaxed. And when you're talking about the players
that he's dropped, Andre Pollard, you know, the best midfield
combination we thought in the world, and to be honest,
given their experience, I would have given them a chance
(16:27):
to redeem themselves.
Speaker 2 (16:29):
Doesn't he Rascie said have won the energy on there.
But there's also a side of me that thinks Rassi
couldn't care anymore. He wanted Eden Pike didn't get that whatever.
But there is the Rugby Championship up for greb too,
so they can't completely dismiss this.
Speaker 4 (16:43):
Well. He said they were going to make these changes
or would likely make these sort of changes this week anyway.
But yeah, I also don't know about naming the side
on Monday. What is what are they achieving by and
n aiming the side days earlier? Doesn't this only give
the All Blacks a bit of a tip off of
what they're expecting. Wouldn't it have been because this called
everyone by surprise, right? Wouldn't it be more smart to
(17:04):
name it later in the weekend?
Speaker 2 (17:05):
Doing this he's a recidivist. I'm talking about it again.
He keeps doing it, so I but he didn't do
it last week. No, not last week too important a test.
But this time. Look, he's done it previous I think
three or four games. Now we's done this. You know,
he's also looking ahead to the next World Cup. He's going, Wow,
we're going to be judged on what we win in
the World Cup, nothing else.
Speaker 4 (17:25):
So you're saying he's throwing the game.
Speaker 2 (17:27):
No, not throwing the game. He's trying what he can
to create depth because they haven't got any because it
was a bit of a dad's army last week.
Speaker 4 (17:34):
Right, Well, I guess so, But I would have thought
coming up against it All Blacks at Eden Park. You know,
you're in New Zealand, you're trying to snap a record
that's exactly what you want. You want your experienced heads.
And to be honest, I still think he should have
given them a chance to redeem themselves and say I
can walk out of this sort of two test mini
series with some pride.
Speaker 2 (17:52):
That's the beauty of Rassi Rasmus. No one has any
idea what on earth he's thinking. If I'm glad I
don't play for him. And on that, Nathan limb out
you go get out of the chamber. Thanks for your jar.
Speaker 3 (18:02):
