who got unceremoniously dumped lost her contract a few years back.

(00:44):
Now she finds herself back and black again and she
is part of the squad that is going off to
the upcoming Women's Cricket World Cup. I've got some opinion
on the possibility, maybe just maybe your warriors of fans
turning up and rowing the party or more's the point
ruining sleep for the Penlouth Panthers. And in the chamber

(01:07):
Hamismith and just as we juggle around some big sports
stories from today, today being Wednesday, the tenth of September
twenty twenty five. Thanks very much as always to JJ
Gardner Holmes New Zealand's trusted home builders for joining us
in the production of this podcast. All right, Le's headed

in other news in some sports sounds that today Black
Fern's fullback Rene Holmes is reveling and being dropped well.
She was paid a visit by the Spanish archer Elbow
the Elbow get it anyway ahead of the pack for series.
She capitalized from the disappointment the old effect dropped. Looking

(01:51):
back at it now, oh yeah, obviously wasn't the greatest
start of the year. But man, I'm actually really grateful
it happened.

Speaker 3 (01:57):
I got to go play club Breakbay.

Speaker 4 (01:58):
I got to connect with my community and now I
just feel free and flowing.

Speaker 2 (02:02):
And she's killed it with the boots and the flogging
of Island, slotting six from seven through out of the
quarterfinals against South Africa, a zen Premiership champ at Paris.
Locatuey is deserting the tactic, says life as a tackle
bag and a lot more. She's committed to Matatu for
the Opki competition. Pops Lua played the pronger and her

(02:24):
brother Cody debuted Fort Wellington last weekend.

Speaker 1 (02:27):
It's in the blood.

Speaker 2 (02:28):
I'm ready for things to not go my way to
work hard at something that I haven't really been the
part of since school and it's going to be a
Rockie Road and Warriors veteran Roger t Ivasa Scheck has
been guiding the younger blokes through the complexities of first
Trade finals football off the park. The biggest one is
the ticket, you know, getting their families and therein trying

(02:50):
to hunt to the game and we've had COMversations around
starting that stuff out early to just prepping in for that.
So it gets pretty busy as the week goes on.
From rugby to Newport of Rugby to league a taste
there of Sport Today News and Avidion.

Speaker 1 (03:05):
It's Sportsfix with Dancie Valdergrave.

Speaker 2 (03:09):
And if a warm welcome now from the Sports Fix
podcast to New Zealand pace bowler Leah to Whoho. She's
been selected to compete in the upcoming Women's Cricket World Cup.
She joins us now, Lere, how are you the things?

Speaker 3 (03:24):
That's how are you going?

Speaker 4 (03:25):
Very well?

Speaker 2 (03:25):
Congratulations on getting the nod for the upcoming World Cup,
starts at the beginning of October. My my, what a
journey you've been on in the last few years. I
heart back to twenty twenty two when you didn't get
your contract and well you're a little on the cranky
side and said no, no, I'm coming back into the
side again. And today back playing World Cups. How good.

Speaker 3 (03:49):
Yeah, it's a pretty nice feeling. I think anytime, anytime
you get named in a World Cup squad is a
really special day, incredibly incredibly grateful to be to be
named in that today. And yeah it hasn't been without
its ups and downs, but in all, want to see
what professional athlete doesn't go through that. So yeah, I
don't know if I'll hear that much, you know, but
I certainly thought I had a bit more to give.

(04:10):
And yeah, look that decision I guess to keep playing
and keep trying to put my name forwarders paid off.
Being named in another ODO World Cup squad today.

Speaker 2 (04:19):
What number is this? Because I think Sophie and Susie
are chalking up number five? You is this number four?
For you?

Speaker 4 (04:25):
Leat?

Speaker 2 (04:26):
It is?

Speaker 3 (04:26):
It is number four yet, so just one behind the
two older girls, if we'll call them that. But yeah,
number four, and just as special really is being named
in the first one.

Speaker 2 (04:36):
So you've got like a month ahead of you over
in the sub Continent, you would have been prepping for
this mentally. I'm presuming you knew that you were going
to be very close to the team. What are your
expectations around what you're going to face, because you can't
go in as underdogs or dark horses anymore after what
happened in the T twenty World Cup, can you?

Speaker 3 (04:54):
No, you can't. I guess it'll be a somewhat of
a title on our back, but I also I think
one day cricket is a completely different beast, and obviously
in the Subcontinent, we've been doing a lot of heat
training and you know, a lot of physical preparation, knowing
you know, it's fifty over of cricket. It's going to
be hard, it's going to be hot, and I think
with the format that we play in one day cricket,

(05:14):
you know that you have to beat every team to
be there or thereabouts at the end, So rounder no
allusions as to how hard that's going to be.

Speaker 2 (05:21):
Isn't that a cool thing to do?

Speaker 4 (05:23):
Though?

Speaker 2 (05:24):
Was it twenty nineteen? I'm really reaching back now where
it was a round robin for the men. Everybody played
everybody else and they dropped straight into semi finals and
then the game of course we don't talk about. So
you get to play everybody ahead of a semi final matchup.
Isn't that like it should be?

Speaker 1 (05:42):
Leah, Yeah, I.

Speaker 3 (05:43):
Think it's a great test. I think it's a real
true test of where you are. And it's as a team.
You know, you play seven games and if you're standing
there at the end and you get another chance for
a semi final and to try and get into that final.
And I think the format that we've gone to in
the women's game, it's been fantastic over the last few
years and I'm glad that we get to play every team.
I think you want to test yourself against the best
at every opportunity, So what better way to do that

(06:05):
than in a ODI World Cup.

Speaker 2 (06:07):
Yr third and World Cups behind Suzie Bates and then
Sophie Divine and just behind you though Maddie Green Mealy
Kerr attending their third. Now there's been talk before about
not enough of a program to bring the new players through.
That's very much stopping now, isn't it. You've got the

(06:28):
old hands to help, but you've got a young lot
of young, very good players to take your positions. I
mean do you treasure this role as leading this team
to victory as a senior player.

Speaker 3 (06:39):
Yeah, we've got a great mix at the moment. Like
you say, we've got a few of us who are
heading to a third, fourth or some cases for World Cup,
and then we've got a couple that are heading to
their first thirty I one or heading to the second.
So I think the balance that we've got at the
moment is great. And you know, the way that the
experienced players are able to help bring those younger players through.
And we've got a few who haven't played in India,

(06:59):
so to get over there nice and early will be fantastic,
to get some time on the ground, sort of get
used to the conditions and yeah, personally being able to
help those young girls come through, I think that's your role.
I guess it's what you know, people like Nikola Brown
did for me when I first came into the team.
And to be able to impart some knowledge, hopefully on

(07:20):
those younger girls coming through, especially in our pace attack,
will be It's a really exciting time.

Speaker 2 (07:24):
Tell us about the debutante's World Cup score. They're being
packed Florida, Devonshire from the Central Hinesbury Elling out of
the Auckland Hearts and from the sparks Pollie English and
Balla James. What do we know about them?

Speaker 3 (07:38):
Yeah, I think a lot of them have been doing
their craft at domestic cricket for a while now. I
think Polly and bella good a number of years of
domestic cricket behind them, so I think in terms of
World Cupsle or New Zealand experience they probably don't quite
have that, but cricket experience over all they do. Someone
like Breelling, I think is extremely exciting. We haven't had
a left arm bowler for the White fans for a

(07:58):
long time, so to have a left arm pace. It's
a tall girl as well, so it comes from a
bit of a height and able to swing the ball,
so it'll be really exciting to see how she goes
over there given the opportunity, and exciting for Flora as well.
I think another left arm spinner. We know how much
spin could play a part over in the Subcontinent on
some of those wickets that we're heading to. So a

(08:20):
really balanced team and really exciting to see how everyone
gets on.

Speaker 1 (08:25):
Dissecting the sporting agenda, it's SPORTSFECX with Dancy Waldgrave.

Speaker 2 (08:30):
Well, at least they're not military fighter jets. What's he
talking about now, I'll tell you. Do you remember back
in twenty seventeen when the All Whites attempted to play
and beat Peru in their own backyard as part of
World Cup qualifying. How did they respond? While in Lima

(08:51):
in their hotel of a morning, an ear splitting fireworks
display was launched straight outside the hotel at three in
the morning, and military jets conducted a low flying swoop
over the team hotel, hardly the most relaxing way to
prepare for such a key fixture. Do you think the

(09:12):
Peruvians cared? Of course, they didn't football mad over there.
They did exactly what they could to distract, to distress,
to keep the All Whites from sleeping ahead of what
was a key of fear. I'm not entirely sure how
well it worked. The All Whites went on to lose
that game. Whether it was lack of sleep or just

(09:33):
superb play from the Peruvians, I'll let you make your
mind up. So the fact there's a Warrior's crew on
Facebook attempting to hijack or derail the sleeping patterns of
the Penrith Panthers ahead of the must win match the
final series via the Warriors. Doesn't bother me. They're not
going to resort to air force. They probably can't. I

(09:54):
doubt if there'll be fireworks outside of the hotel. They're
having some fun. They're causing a ruckus and good on
them for doing so. Sure, if they managed to slow
the team bus up, there might be a problem. If
they climb into the ground eggs to throw at the
coach's box, which they have threatened, could be a small issue.
But for me, it's banter, it's loud, it's fun, and

(10:17):
it shows huge disrespect to the NRL who seemed to
make a game of paying huge disrespect to the Warriors
up the wires.

Speaker 1 (10:26):
The chamber is now in session on Sportsfix and the chamber.

Speaker 2 (10:30):
Doors fly open, and look who's at the other side
of the doors. That is Hamish McKay. Mister McKay, welcome
into the chamber. I trust you well.

Speaker 4 (10:38):
Darcy on Fantastic made account. Wait to burst into the
chamber in person to life and have a crack at
whatever the veritable small board of sports.

Speaker 2 (10:47):
Chat with you last night didn't work so well at
Mount Smart to rite a tongue Go Media Stadium didn't
get the job done against Australia, but Chris Wood did
finally break as duck. He managed to score a goal
against Australia and then he's gone.

Speaker 4 (11:04):
Gone a three quarter time wasn't into a lovely I'm
make sure what it's like to be in first class
and you know the nice flat bed, but all out
of side joking aside. That boy has got you know,
he's got the size of footballs because he puts his
body on the line. He comes and plays for his country.

(11:24):
There are one or two very highly paid sportsmen who
don't you know, they continue to have a chip on
their shoulder. Won't name anybody, but you know I've got
nothing but admiration for him, and you know, even his
own career. You know, I've been sort of chafed side
by Newcastle there and then bouncing back and Nottingham Forest
are ten.

Speaker 1 (11:43):
Out of ten.

Speaker 2 (11:43):
Yeah, a top bloke and he's playing again. That's why
I had to disappear so quick, to miss the traffic
out of Mount Smart to get the playing flatbed and
disappear off over to the EPL. Let's let's move that
to one side. Talking about football. Do you remember many
years ago when the Peruvians in a qualifying game for
the World Cup with the All Whites in Lima, they

(12:04):
flew fighter jets over top of the hotel, They stopped
the bus, they had a fireworks display. This is maybe
not the extent that the Warriors fan base will go to,
but there's a Facebook page suggesting they should do exactly that.
As far as partying outside Penmouth's hotel ahead of the
knockout game in the finals, is that kosher hamous? Yeah?

Speaker 4 (12:27):
Look, I don't know. I'm sort of fifty to fifty
on it. I like the sort of the feed and
the drama of it and and all's fear and love
and sport. But you know, I don't know how much
have we got an air force left. I don't know
if we've got anything that maybe we can get a
couple out of our hockey to get up there. But yeah, look,
I would rather beat them sort of fear and square

(12:49):
than play some sort of silly game. Or if you're
a Penrith, if you you just you sneak out for
some luxury lodge that nobody would know about, when you
just put some some pseudo players in.

Speaker 2 (13:00):
There, some body doubles that probably changed the hotel. I
feel sorry for the other people. I don't care about Penrith.
But if you're in there trying to sleep and you've
got that going on outside, really, do you think this
will happen? I doubt it will. But it's it's great
games of the ship. It's a bit of fun before
this semi final. At the semi final of this knockout final.

Speaker 4 (13:20):
Yeah, I think I think I think everybody just get
a little bit too tired. It might, you know, a
couple of horns tooting and a few things like that,
you know, cow bell or something like that, But no,
I just think it's all good fun. And you know,
it's just you know, we're in the media. We love
this kind of fodder, don't we. We feed on it,
we do.

Speaker 2 (13:37):
Let's walk away from the Warriors now, which if you
want to go and watch the All Blacks live, you're
going to have to after halftime. That clash between the
two teams is irritating, to say the least, but it
does point us toward the All Blacks. Rassi Erasmus mass
changes in his team yesterday. Expectations around Razor Robertson Hamish,

(14:00):
what do you think he's going to do with his
side ahead of this Wellington fixture?

Speaker 4 (14:06):
Well, I think with Ratty, I mean, he beat us
last in the first Test and made six changes seven
changes after a loss this time, and you know, I
think it's pretty much parf of the course for him.
He's the one who set the trend in terms of
trying to build depth between bagby World Cups. And you know,
I was interesting. I was reading an article saying, you know,
Raise has done that, and Raise has done if you
hadn't spotted Simon Parker, then you know, obviously you need

(14:29):
go to Speaksavors. So I'm not sure that he can
claim that. I mean, most people have been sort of
crying about em for a while. I don't think it's
going to make too many changes. I think he's going
to have a dilemma sooner or later as to hers
two best locks, and that might, you know, that might
create a bit of the situation, if you know what
I mean, especially given that one of the three best
locks is the current captain. Maybe Johnny Lomack, Johnny Lomax's

(14:53):
the Boys starts young like therell Ham comes to Jack
back to the Canberra Raiders, aren't I Lomax comes into
the front row, Samosani left the start. No Cody Taylor.
I don't know whether the young with a Christie who's
sort of gone from number six in the country that
did enough. I think he did probably get an another
whiff of it, although they'll be keen to get Carlo,

(15:14):
to get Cortez Ratama back in there. I throw caution
to the wind. It's time to see Ruben Love and
the real and the real and the real stuff. And
that's on the wing for for Nanaha. And you know,
CADB Clark showed enough to me the other night playing
commentated that game, or could beating Tasman to perhaps come
back into the mix as well.

Speaker 2 (15:33):
Well.

Speaker 4 (15:33):
I think he's going to mess with it too much
because his strategy, let's face it, Raxy has come from
a position of winning regularly, whereas whereas whereas Raider is
trying to start to win regularly, as opposed to the
sort of slightly shaky start that he's had to his
all black coaching career.

Speaker 2 (15:52):
Love the Ruben Love call predominantly because he's playing at home.
He understands the wins of Wellington secure under the high
ball and he's made every post to winner so far.
So if you're going to have a bit of a gamble,
that makes sense to me, right.

Speaker 4 (16:08):
Yeah, I think so. And I think you've got to
you know, like we've got you know, we've we've put
the you know, put the wood on the an awkward
the Eden Park. You know. The job to do is
if you lose, if you were to lose this weekend
in Wellington, it's beat the Wallabies twice and you win
the Rugby Championships, simple as that. So I think Pink

(16:28):
Reuben Love's going to create an your risks for you.
You've got your pack worked out, maybe you've got some
issues around in the midfield to think about. I cop
a lot of flat for this, but I'm I believe
that Rico Gioanni should be back at center. I just
think for South Africa he'd be the right guy for that.
And that might allow you to start both Caleb Clarkett

(16:50):
and and Reuben Love. But that'll be controversial.

Speaker 2 (16:54):
Well that's what you're paid to do. You've got to
cause a RUCO still like the Warriors fans and on
that we open the chamber door and with all due
respect and reverends ask you to leave. Thank you McKay.

Speaker 4 (17:07):
Eating it.
