Speaker 2 (00:20):
Hello there and welcome into a fresh episode of the
Sports Fix podcast for a Thursday Thursday, the twenty fifth
of September, to be precise, in association with GJ. Gardner Holmes,
New Zealand's most trusted home Daughder. I'm Jason Pie.
Speaker 3 (00:34):
Nice to see you.
Speaker 4 (00:35):
Good to see you too, Jason Pie mccalling my own
im Pie when he gets up here over the weekend.
Obviously a big All Black beast coming up, they all are,
and Piney's going to have weekend sport covering that right
off earlier start at five o'clock.
Speaker 2 (00:47):
But don't mind it, I don't mind it. Don't we
start earlier, we finish earlier. We can get to get
some benefit out of the out of the evening and
of course daylight saving this weekend as well.
Speaker 4 (00:56):
So I've completely forgotten about to celebrate full start. Great
to see your Piney, right, what have we got lined
up today?
Speaker 2 (01:04):
Well, I want to talk about this All Blacks team
that was named today. A few talking points and I
know you'll have some thoughts as well. What are we
doing in terms of a guest who's joining us on
the podcast today.
Speaker 4 (01:13):
Well, I was looking back the nineteen ninety six six
Athletic part, that legendary match between the Wallabies and the
All Blacks. I'm looking at it last night. I'm looking
at the old players, the old names. I'm like, Oh,
Craig Dowd's going to join us. Oh to talk about
because Craig Dowd's not shy of offering the odd shot
to talk about what this test means, what happened last
time around? Dowdy coming on the program, Love it the.
Speaker 2 (01:36):
Lads and sports news coming as well, So let's get
into it. In other news, let's get underway with a
look at some of the big sports stories around today.
Interim Silver Fern's coach Evet the Calls of Them Jury
has commended her side's temperament after a nervous start to
the seventy to fifty eight second Test when over South
Africa in Napier last night. South Africa jumped out to
a ten to four lead in the seventh minute, but
(01:58):
the Ferns had cut the deficit to fifteen fourteen by
quarter time.
Speaker 4 (02:01):
The challenge for us.
Speaker 2 (02:02):
As we talked about all the things we thought they
were going to do that we've.
Speaker 3 (02:04):
Still got to work on the execution, but us really pleased.
Speaker 2 (02:06):
With the way the players just took check at.
Speaker 5 (02:09):
Where they were at and really whipped their way back
into the game, because it's not easy.
Speaker 2 (02:13):
Team Europe Golf captain Luke Donald has drilled his forty
fifth Ryder Cup opening ceremony speech straight down the fairway.
He's alluded to their American rivals getting paid for the
first time with a figure of half a million green bags,
whereas his charges are playing for free.
Speaker 6 (02:29):
We're fueled by something money cannot buy, purpose, brotherhood and
a responsibility to honor those who came before us while
inspiring those whose.
Speaker 4 (02:41):
Time is yet to come.
Speaker 2 (02:42):
And a training camp in Dubai has the White Ferns
in good stead getting into the upcoming fifty over Cricket
World Cup in India and Sri Lanka. Pastballo Jess Curse
says they have acclimatized well to the subcontinent heat.
Speaker 3 (02:54):
It's going to be.
Speaker 5 (02:54):
Hot here in India, so adapting to that was really good.
In just those game scenarios.
Speaker 2 (02:58):
We have lots of different situations that we hit to
adapt to.
Speaker 7 (03:03):
Use and a villion It's Sportsfix with Jason Pine and Dussy,
Waltergrave Swarm.
Speaker 4 (03:08):
Welcome and now to former All Black prop Craig Dowd. Craig,
you know mate, here we go again another classic Test match.
Speaker 5 (03:17):
Yeah, Craiky, I'm not expecting anything less than fire and
brimstone from the All Blacks this week.
Speaker 4 (03:25):
Absolutely. So the changes have been wrong, but they're not
They're a huge amount of changes. Talk us through what
you've seen in this side. There's been some consistency of
selection with Scott robertson which I don't think it is
a surprise, especially you look at the midfield. They've had
to play around with the pack because he's returning players
and of course the captain is out injured. So what
(03:47):
are you reading to the selections? Crag?
Speaker 5 (03:48):
Yeah, look, by no ways is anything broken and just
because it's a massive loss, your hands up, get on
with it, fellers, how do we fix it?
Speaker 3 (03:58):
Obviously we've all been talking about the.
Speaker 5 (04:00):
Number nine jersey and you know we've been toying with
just where we going to get, you know, a fit
number nine from but cam Reuigard comes straight in into
the starting position after one game of county is great, fantastic.
We all love this guy. He's an absolutely superstart waiting
to happen. He's going to make a massive difference for
that team. The Ford Pack personally, they took a hiding
(04:22):
scrum time and set peace and they will know it.
Speaker 3 (04:25):
They will be hurting it.
Speaker 5 (04:26):
And I think that's going to be a key focus
for this weekend for our scrum to step up. And
of course there's the Micron factor and the Australian scrum
has improved somewhat, but yeah, that's that's that's that's going
to be for in my mind where the game is
won and lost. But then take Keeler cart Clark's coming back.
You know, he's on his home ground at Eden Park,
which is great and the park factor, let's not forget that,
is going to be huge again once this weekend. So
(04:48):
the pressure on you know, to bounce back and then
to also not lose that that I mean just imagine
that the worst ever loss on an all Black team
and losing at weedon Park, Eden Park in a space
for two weeks.
Speaker 3 (05:01):
They don't want that, so I'd be very, very surprised.
Speaker 5 (05:05):
If these guys have the correct the tube can go
out there, and like I said earlier, it's fire and brimstone.
Speaker 4 (05:12):
Artie Savia has the captaincy by default because finally Scott
Barrett's got a damn's shoulder so he can't What will
that mean from Ardie and for the rest of the team,
because he's kind of a leader already that maybe we
didn't see a lot of that last week, well two
weeks ago.
Speaker 5 (05:28):
Yeah, I look, I think it's a great, great change
naming Ardie captain.
Speaker 3 (05:33):
He sets the standard within that all Black team.
Speaker 5 (05:36):
Like I said, the game against South Africa at ad
Eton Park, it was one hundredth game. It was a
big occasion from again having that the captain mantle, it
will be another big occasion for Artie and the fourteen
players behind him. They follow Artie, you know, he sets
the standard. He creates to go forward and let the
other players catch up to his standards.
Speaker 4 (05:54):
The front row a place that you've spent far too
much time de grout Taylor, plainly Taylor coming back, who's
just getting better and better and better, is going to
be huge, especially down the stretch when actually need someone
to throw the balls right, that's another story. And Lomax,
they're setting up there and coming off the bench to
cover those guys. Samasoni Takyaho, you got to mighty Williams
(06:16):
and Fletcher knew. What does that say to you that selection?
Speaker 5 (06:20):
Well, I looked at the reserves and there's that. You've
got this bomb squad sitting on the bench there. But
you're quite right. Cody coming back and to sort of,
you know, steady the ship and offer that experience up front.
Speaker 3 (06:30):
He's huge.
Speaker 5 (06:31):
You know, we we did miss some in that last game,
but look Tyron Lomax, he's getting back to his form.
He's he's only just come back from injury himself. I
rate that guy as a fantastic tight ed prop world
class and of course Ethan degree it's a great front
row and a great replacement. So there's no reason why
(06:51):
else Crumb should not operate. And I'm sure you know
there's a lot of soul searching going on. What what
did happen against South Africa? And they ain't going to
want to repeat it.
Speaker 4 (06:59):
Some of the changes, as I said, pushed on by
the fact that we've got no Scooter Barrett. But Fabian
or Fabian is like to be called Fabian Holland and
a lot along with tiple V is no longer at six.
Simon park has got that role, that great big lump
of a human being has got that role. Stiti at
the boot and Savia at open site. Simon Parker's arguing
(07:23):
in the Story of the Year in the Pack, isn't
he Absolutely?
Speaker 5 (07:26):
So that's that's a fantastic back five, you know, And
again it's they were all there on merit. I mean,
that's a that's a really exciting loose Petrio as well,
you know, like I'm really enjoying Wallace's het seeing him
back of that black jersey. And but you know, Simon
Parker obviously physicality around the field, and and you know,
and then there's Artisvier, which is one of the best players,
(07:48):
if not the best player in the world.
Speaker 4 (07:50):
We've got a guy on the bench, Peter Lucky. I
haven't already seen a great deal of him. He's come in.
Some players have fallen to one side. I don't know
if it's a punishment or but there's no Cariffe, for example,
and then they're plumped for this relatively inexperienced.
Speaker 5 (08:04):
Peter Luck guy Yeah, it's I think what raised is
be seen in those guys. He's given them the you know,
they've got his trust. They're going to go out there
and they will be sitting in the back back of
the room all those debrief listening to what's been happening,
and they'll be hurting as part of the squad themselves.
And this is their opportunities and when they get on
(08:24):
the field to go and prove themselves.
Speaker 4 (08:26):
And I'm presuming that you are going to back your
former teammates all the way and suggesting that you're not
fearful for anything. You're more fearful for the Australians than
anything else.
Speaker 3 (08:35):
Oh.
Speaker 5 (08:36):
Look, in my mind, there is only one result this weekend,
you know, And I'm just mindful of coming off the
loss that they have the pressure of Eden Park and
what that brings. I think these guys are hurting, and well,
if they're not hurting, they're not real all blacks, are they?
Of course they're hurting, and I'm expecting a pretty convincing performance.
(08:56):
And that's not to say, you know, Australia they might
sniff blood, but you know, they put their nose too
close so they'll get it slapped down.
Speaker 3 (09:04):
News and AI it's Sports Vex with us.
Speaker 4 (09:09):
Wanted our memory Lane last night and what an enjoyable
waltz it was as well. Nineteen ninety six a phenomenal
All Black side. Just look at the fifteen some of
the greats of the game without a shadow of a
diet up against the Wallabies, who, through David Campeze, well
they asked for hell to be unleashed on them and
(09:29):
it was a pregame. The All Blacks had an article
written by David Campezi saying he was going to tear
the All Blacks apart, and they'd stuck that article above
the urinal, so every time they went for a whiz
they read those words and plainly they sat with them.
There were some standouts with that game is a few things.
The refereeing, the enthusiasm of Ed Morrison and the fact
(09:53):
that he called the game with four minutes to go
because the All Blacks were thrashing the Wallabies. It was
a horrible, horrible day, so hey back to the changing sheds.
The fact that he could make a decision without the
interference of a TMO, a touch judge assistant referee. The
very first score by the All Blacks. You couldn't tell
if anyone had scored. There was this huge pile up,
(10:16):
this great big ruck. He just thrust his hand side
wood and blew the whistle. That's a try. There was
no slowing down at the pace of the game. I
absolutely loved that. The fact that they ignored basically clean
out's head, high tackles and anything vaguely rough. Well, back
(10:38):
in the day, that's how rugby was played. Yeah, sure
you beat your lip when you watched it because you
could see the pain in the players. But that's what
it was in those days. It was a brutal game.
It was a confrontational, gladiatorial game. And that's the game
of rugby that I remember, good, bad or indifferent. The
way the All Blacks managed to play, and the way
(10:59):
they managed to handle that greasy ball in those atrocious
conditions with a driving southerly and in the second half
destruct of rain was something to behold. You won't see
execution like that in this day and age. And of
course there was the legendary Millard stand. What a stand,
(11:19):
What a place to watch a game of rugby. Brave
souls in Wellington who stood at the top of that
stand and a howling southerly gale. What a game of
rugby it was. Do yourself a favor, find a replay,
go and watch it.
Speaker 1 (11:33):
The Chamber is now in session on sportsfax ender.
Speaker 2 (11:37):
The chain wos great to hear from Craig dow What
an absolute champion of a man. Now the current incarnation
of the All Blacks, the twenty three man team to
play Australia Eden Park Saturday night, unveiled by Scott Robertson today.
No Scott Barrett, but there's nothing sinister here. There's no
conspiracy here. He said his shoulder. If he hadn't hit
a shoulder, he'd be in the team. Artie Save gets
(11:59):
to lead the side, Fabi and Holland back into the
second row. Though I do like this, I must say.
Speaker 4 (12:05):
What else do you like about the team? We'll expand
on that shortly and you look right across it, or
stand out as Barrett that's the one, because he's simply
not there. We are going to go back to. I'll
tell you we definitely are, but anything else stands out
for you.
Speaker 2 (12:18):
I like the fact that Leroy Carter's got a second test.
I think of all of the players who took the
field in Wellington, he probably was the one who might
have enhanced his reputation. I mean it was only his
first Test and what I mean he'll hate the fact
that his only Test match up till now was the
biggest defeat in All Black's history. But still a special
day for man. I thought he gave a pretty good
account of himself, so pleased to see him there. Also,
(12:40):
Scott Robinson talked today about not messing with combinations too much.
I think there was a bit of a clamor be
interested in your thoughts on a change at center, and
I think they've gone with Jordy Barrett and Billy Proctor
again to build that combination. The opportunities, I get the
feeling are running out for Billy Proctor, but I'm glad
they've got another go.
Speaker 4 (12:59):
Yeah. Oh the surprises there weren't any for me last
night and look stopped clock is right twice a day,
we know, And last night I was insistent that you
do not change the midfield combination because what you could
see Scott Robinson does this. He start with McKenzie for
a long time before eventually gassed him at ten. He's
got confidence in that as far as the back. Will
(13:21):
Jordan is the best fullback in the world. Put him
back there. Caleb Clark is good under the high ball.
I was questioning myself, canilely Roy Carter play on the
right wing as well? But hold on, he's a seventh
player and play anywhere. So that was there. You've got
Roy Guard coming back, that's a given. We know Boden
Barrett's not going to do that again. The pack, well,
there's only a couple of adjustments, and that's because Barrett
(13:43):
was out. So I don't see it as being hugely surprising.
I like the way they've given these guys the opportunity
to come back after what was a train wreck. It
really was this guy standing around in the last half
of the game, look at each other going what do
we do now?
Speaker 2 (14:00):
I like thee and you mentioned Roy Guard. I think
Cody Taylor coming back as important to two guys who
weren't available in Wellington. These aren't selection, you know, issues
not being.
Speaker 4 (14:10):
Punished for being bad. But it's like when you look
at who's available. Cam Roiga, I'm sorry, you're taking me
every day of the week. Cody Taylor, you're taking me
every day of the week. And a couple of weeks onward.
The guy is a genius, and we saw what happened
with they less experienced took her last time around and
it fell apart. There's a lot on those guys, right,
Let's get back to your big man up the middle.
Speaker 2 (14:28):
I also wanted just to mention Patrick two polot two,
you know, leading the bench. I think they heard the
phrase today leading the bench. And you know, a guy
like that, huge manna, great experience. You know what you're
going to get from Patty toops when he goes on,
you know you're going to get and All Blacks level
performance from him. So I really like that. Again, it's
come about really because of the injury to Scott Barrett,
(14:49):
because there are four quality locks Scott Barrett, Fabian Holland
Tupulvai and Patrick Twopolotu. You can't put all four into
a twenty three. So the fact that Barre's not there
probably gives Patrick twopo loot to a chance here. I
really really like that. And Peter Larky's the other one
that interests me off the bench as well. Only three
test matches all off bench all last year hasn't played
(15:10):
this year for the All Blacks. Interesting they've gone with
him ahead of someone like Duplicity could Summer Penny Fee
now Luke Jacobson, he seems to have leap frog across
all of those guys for this test.
Speaker 4 (15:21):
Yeah, that was an oddity. I don't know what effect
you'll have. But when you start retooling that the loose
forwards and we start the whole forward pack, something has
to give around that. I feel a bit for Duplicy Carriffic. Yeah,
I really like the cut of his GiB. But in
saying that, maybe he is suffering a bit from well,
someone's got to move because we weren't happy with the
what happened last week, so there will be casualties.
Speaker 2 (15:44):
The other interesting one to me, Das is for the
second test in a row, no place in the twenty
three for Rico your Woni. Yeah, what is the future
for Rico your Wony and the all blacks?
Speaker 4 (15:53):
Well, it doesn't look good, does it. How old is
he now? He's getting on a bit. I don't know
if he's still available on the wing. He's obviously not
going anywhere there Center. Again, you would think that maybe
as an insurance policy could be on the bench. It
is that the way Scott Robertson thinks an awful way
for an all black career to end. But I suppose
(16:16):
what I've always liked about All Blacks is that you
don't kick him out on the way down. You get
rid of them before they start the plummet? Is that cruel?
I don't think so.
Speaker 7 (16:26):
No.
Speaker 2 (16:26):
I know, as you're saying those words, I don't think
it is. I think, you know, no one's entitled to
the jersey, And whenever Scott Robinson's asked about RecA you want,
he always makes the point eighty test or black, you know,
absolutely magnificent. When he first came into the team on
the wing, you know, evolved into a high quality center.
But no one's guaranteed the jersey high quality.
Speaker 4 (16:46):
But he evolved into a center because he didn't have
a choice.
Speaker 2 (16:49):
Yeah, but I think defensively he was a very high
quality center. Maybe not on attack so much in terms
of setting up the outside like a Frank Bunch uster
or a Joe Stanley uster. But that's going back to
a previous age. But ricco you only might not play
for the All Blacks again, That's that's one possible outcome here.
I don't think it is the outcome to the lab
(17:09):
and I think he'll get opportunities, you know, in the
Indy Year Tour and that sort of thing, hitting into
the next World Cup cycle. But his role to play
just is I'm so curious to find out what it is.
Speaker 4 (17:20):
We messed out a big lump in the loose Ford trio.
Simon Parker. Yeah, yeah, I love him. Wow, Yeah like him.
This is one of the elevations of the year, isn't
it Seemingly out of nowhere? It's turned up and now
they're gone straight away for him.
Speaker 2 (17:38):
I think they wanted him for France, but he was injured. Yeah,
I think Scott Robinsons always liked him. He was good
in Super rug Beat got injured there as well. But
a big body. The two poor hit six thing. Who
knows if Scott Barrett was fit whether they would have
gone with six will never know. We'll never know, and
we might find out next week if and when Scott
Barrett comes back. But yeah, so many selection issues. We
might have time to talk about the game itself. But
don't worry, it's only Thursday. We've got an We've got
(18:00):
more time entertainment tomorrow, haven't we.
Speaker 4 (18:03):
The tb are currently paying four forty four in Australian victory.
Speaker 3 (18:06):
There.
Speaker 4 (18:07):
Yeah, that says a lot to me about the I'd say,
not lack of respect for the Wallabies, but the reaction
to what the All Blacks will do after that embarrassment
down in Wellington. That's more what it is. It's a
pro All Black as opposed to a pro Wallaby thing.
Speaker 2 (18:24):
Bang on, absolutely bang on. That is what we're expecting.
A brutal All Blacks response. That is us in the
chamber today.
Speaker 1 (18:33):
Dissecting the sporting agenda.
Speaker 7 (18:35):
It's Sportsfix with Jason Vain and Darcy Waldergrave and that wraps.
Speaker 2 (18:40):
Sports Fix blows the final whistle on another edition of
did there?
Speaker 4 (18:44):
Yeah?
Speaker 2 (18:44):
Thanks the sporting analogy?
Speaker 3 (18:46):
You like? That?
Speaker 8 (18:47):
Blows the final whistle on another red card? For that, mate,
I've lost my train of thought. But what I will
say is that we do appreciate those of you who download,
who listen, but in particular those who subscribe, because a
fresh episode will arrive at your podcast feed tomorrow.
Speaker 4 (19:03):
Absolutely tell your friends, tell let your family, and if

ridiculous analogy. Maybe we're not spread the word, get people involved,
