Speaker 2 (00:21):
Hello there, pokmon into the Sports Fixed podcast. I'm Darcy Watergrave.
It is a Wednesday. It's the first of October twenty
twenty five. Coming up on today's editionent Melee Kerr joins
the show. Amelia occurred to her parents, one of the
runaway stars of the White Fern to take on Australia
for their first game of the Women's World Cup. I've
(00:44):
got some opinion for you, mostly pleasant. I might add
about the English women's rugby team and congratulations to them
for winning the World Cup. We'll be joined in the
chamber by sports writer for n z ME. His name
is Ben Francis. We'll take a look at the new
South Wales Cup success and a wee bit of a
(01:04):
game's darts and nine data that's sort of comes ed
Bert in other news. Done now for a quick fix
of sport. Jamie Joseph as the new All Black Stafteine
coach and he is Adam and that there will be
no bad blood between him and ab big Dog Scott
ridgeback Robinson's Jamie has twice tried to secure the AB
(01:28):
coaching job, and twice he has fallen short. Indeed, he
chortal at the suggestion of an awkward connection. I wouldn't
say the words awkward.
Speaker 3 (01:40):
The role really is to help the or black coaches
unearth and by the next guys who are going to
be all Blacks.
Speaker 2 (01:45):
There's no awkwardness from myself. I think that's just professional RBM,
professional coaching. That's smiling assassin Jammy Joseph Baller Stephen Adams
has insisted that last season's finals run, which was knee
shopped almost immediately by the Golden State Warriors, has served
purpose in Sifton Rockets will be better off for the experience.
Speaker 4 (02:06):
What playoffs does is not so much sure on the
team as a whole. You're just one organism, right, and
so a lot of these like may issues those come up,
so then you could address them properly sometimes in your
regular season and you can kind of brush over them.
Speaker 2 (02:19):
Bozzy cricketer Marcus Stoyness isn't taking a lack of experience
as a reason to treat the black Caps any differently.
They do so at their peril. No Williamson, no Santana,
no Ferguson, no Phillips, no Rook. You get the general idea.
Speaker 5 (02:37):
There are a few new pass and so used to
play against those familiar bases are in those big names,
but probably a great optunity for them all to have
their cracker and make it their pay soncinse.
Speaker 2 (02:48):
O, guess yeah, my money's on the Rain winning series
three nil. And there's your quick fixed hit for today.
Speaker 1 (02:56):
Use and Avidion. It's Sportsfix with Dancie valde Greve.
Speaker 2 (03:00):
It's a warm welcome own to sports Fix podcast to
all around it from the White Ferns. One of our
true superstars. Her name is Amelia Mealy Kerse. She joins
us now here to the start of the World Cup.
Speaker 6 (03:13):
Me, Darcy, how are you?
Speaker 2 (03:14):
I'm great, Mealy? Thanks for asking. Hey, World Cup, it's
right on the doorstep. Are you tempering your enthusiasm for
this tournament?
Speaker 6 (03:22):
Well, yeah, no, it's exciting. We don't get to play
too much fifty over cricket with the World Cup coming
around every four years, so it seems that we play
a lot more tea twenty cricket these days, and for us,
fifty over is the pinnacle. So yeah, it's pretty exciting
to be able to play everyone once and to play
(03:42):
cricket in India and Sri Lanka.
Speaker 2 (03:44):
Love the structure of the tournament. You play everybody once,
then you've got semis, then a final, then a winner.
It seems very egalitarian.
Speaker 6 (03:51):
Millie, Yeah, it's it's a lot of games with cricket,
and I think, you know, getting to play everyone once,
it's obviously it doesn't matter what pool you're in because
there's no such thing. And yeah, it's a long tournament too,
so I think the team that wins it, they've had
to be consistently great throughout it.
Speaker 2 (04:11):
Not a lot of fifty over cricket. So what's the
movement like physically and mentally to get back into fifty
over mode.
Speaker 6 (04:19):
I think one, it's probably a little bit in a way.
It's physically harder, it's just more time on your feet.
But I think the main thing is kind of the
mental approach, and with fifty over cricket, it's being patient
and doing things for longer periods and doing their really
basic small things well consistently over and over again. T
(04:40):
twinny cricket, there's a bit more flair and fireworks, I guess,
but fifty over cricket, it's trying to just take each
ball as it comes and trying to separate each ball
as its own battle. When you've just got to be
really mentally focused.
Speaker 2 (04:55):
You'll be loving a balance of the side, wouldn't you.
Look you've got some super experienced players, you've got some
mid experience players, and you've got some of the youth
coming through as well. That makes you smile, right, Yeah.
Speaker 6 (05:06):
I think the balance of the side is great, and
now those young girls came in a few years back
have had a lot more experience and have had tasted
that success as well, which helps build belief. So I
think we've got a really nice balance. We've got a
great environment off the field, and the pleasing thing as
(05:26):
of late is just seeing how many more players are
stepping up and contributing to team performances.
Speaker 2 (05:32):
Now the warm up game has been for you.
Speaker 6 (05:34):
Yeah, We've had four warm up games, two against England
in Dubai and then two over here, and they've been
really good competitive games. We've got, I guess, in a
way what we've wanted out of it. With players getting
time in the middle, I think has been really important.
We've everyone's got to play as well, which has been nice.
(05:55):
All fifteen are playing and yeah, it's actually been pretty
full on, but nice to get some time playing fifty
over cricket before the tournament starts.
Speaker 2 (06:06):
Expectations around the indoor, what are you expecting? What's the
ground like, what's the pitch like?
Speaker 6 (06:11):
Yeah, we trained there last night and it's a really
cool ground. I think it's depends where the boundaries go,
but it looks like a small ground and I've heard
that it's a really good wicket, so I think it's
meant to be a high scoring ground. Again, if you
bowl good balls on any wicket, it's still hard to
score off. But yeah, I think under lights as well,
(06:32):
the ball might skid on. And yeah, the wickets meant
to be very good here, so it could be a
high scoring game.
Speaker 2 (06:38):
Small boundaries, a good deck. Sophiet Divine must be grinning
for me and to ear right now.
Speaker 6 (06:44):
Yeah, if she can get if she can bet through
to the last ten overs and we've got wickets in hair,
and I think she'd be pretty dangerous.
Speaker 2 (06:52):
Meanly, technically, what have the coaching staff been saying about
your requirements, your attitude, what you need to do throughout
the duration.
Speaker 6 (07:00):
I think batting is very individual and so each player
has to have their own game plan and everyone has
different roles, whether you're top order or middle order. Some
people sweeping's low rists, some people that's high ris. For so,
I think the main thing is for each player to
understand their own role and the clarity of that as
(07:21):
cliche is as it is is. Wickets in hands allow
you to have a death phase and really put pressure
on at the back end, but still being positive throughout
the whole innings and when you're chasing, we'll probably put
some targets up at where we want to be depending
on what we're chasing. But I think the key for
betting is definitely known your own game plan.
Speaker 2 (07:43):
You haven't had the greatest success against Australia, that's been
polite in the fifty over game, but is it worth
looking back over those fixtures like the last few times
you played.
Speaker 1 (07:53):
No.
Speaker 6 (07:54):
I think the thing with world cuts is everything's a
one off game and for a team like Australia, who
are often expected to win in a series, sometimes it's
there's less pressure. But in a world put when the
expectations on you to make the final like Australia are.
(08:14):
They've got to play under a lot more pressure and
for us it's kind of a game where we know,
if we play our best, we can really put them
under pressure and almost take it as a free hit
against them.
Speaker 1 (08:29):
Dissecting the sporting agenda, it's SPORTSFECX with Darcy Waldgrave.
Speaker 2 (08:34):
Congratulations to the English women's rugby team. The Red Roses
picked themselves up a World Cup at home in front
of eighty thousand fans. Twickenham absolutely rocked and rightly celebrated
what their women did for the game and for sport
in England. That's incredible what happens, isn't it When you
(08:56):
properly resource a sport and a team suddenly they find success.
Success though, is not something that the Black Ferns experience.
After winning the Rugby World Cup a handful of years
ago at Eden Park, it was celebrated and fated as
being a huge thing for women's rugby in the country.
(09:18):
It was going to accelerate on from there. With the
fanfare and the respect and the joy that it brought
the New Zealand rugby public. Might suggest that England are
going to carry on strength to strength. That the difference
between England and New Zealand is resources. Look, I don't
know events are have got enough money to properly resource
(09:39):
the women's game. But if they don't get used to
coming third or fourth or fifth as the rest of
the world accelerate and pass us by. They need a
stronger professional game. They need a longer and more involved
international series. They need more players, they need a greater depth,
(10:00):
and I don't know if they're going to get any
of that. We keep getting told that the women's game
is the only area of growth within New Zealand rugby
and to further encourage that, indeed, to light a fire
under the ars of that explosion, they need success. They
need the black ferns to be sitting at the top
of the world. You simply can't get to the top
(10:23):
of the world based on history. The results of the
past do not and will not predict the results of
the future. So nz Are do what you can. Invest
more time and money resources into the women's game. Here
in New Zealand, you're on a winner, but currently you
(10:43):
are watching that dissipate. Not good enough in saying that
the Canadians beat us through crowdfunding, Hey back the drawing
board not only for ends are but for me and
my opinions.
Speaker 1 (10:57):
The Chamber is now in session on sportsfix.
Speaker 2 (11:01):
Time to time, and the Chamber now Ben Francis is
in here with us, been as a sports journalist, are
walking working across n z ME. It is with us
now been made.
Speaker 3 (11:10):
I'm fantastic, Darcy, as an honor to be back here
in the chamber.
Speaker 2 (11:14):
It's lovely to have you in here. I don't smell
so bad. I've met a few days off. That's got
to be good. I thought of you today because I
know what a tragic you are when it comes to
the Warriors and you go to that next level, down
to the New South Wales Cup. I don't think we've
made enough of this that the Warriors had a great
season until about halfway through. Then as the players fell off,
(11:34):
the Whales fell off. But not the case with this
New South Wales Cup team. They've done phenomenally well and
it carried on over the weekend.
Speaker 3 (11:42):
Yeah that's right, Darcy. Of course, the Warriors winning the
New South Wales Cup final against the Dragons the first
time they've actually won that title as well, which is fantastic.
Are the team look to be fair though, the team
is stacked with players with the NRL experience thirteen.
Speaker 2 (11:55):
But they can do that right legal, So what was
the ruling around that.
Speaker 3 (11:58):
It's it's essentially guys that are like on development contracts,
the players that aren't getting picked, and a couple of
others like I guess you could say wider group players.
They can all play it in this in the team.
And this happens for every team as well. So most
teams have a reserve grade club or they've got affiliate
clubs like the Broncos. So the Broncos have the Burly Bears,
(12:19):
who the Warriors are going to be playing in the
State championship this weekend at the Grand Final day.
Speaker 2 (12:24):
Okay, so this is not a case of big tough
Warriors beating down on terrible teams because they've all got
second string teams that are full of first graders as well.
Speaker 3 (12:33):
Yes, exactly, it's just the fact that the Warriors team
has lots of players that have NURL experience thirteen of
the seventeen that played over the week and do have
NL experience. But then you've got guys like Carl and
you Going, who the captain has only played one NRL game,
for example. But then you've also got guys like Tanner
Boyd who was Man of the Match against the Dragons,
but he's also got about seventy close to eighty in
(12:54):
NURL games worth of experience, and you.
Speaker 2 (12:55):
Can keep name checking them with some impressive players in that.
So who stands out for you besides those two?
Speaker 3 (13:01):
I think you have to look at the impact that
likes attained tour Picky and Sam Healy have had, especially
how much they've grown the year with that first grade experience.
Even a guy like Kayls Fuddy Loafer who hasn't played
in the NRL just yet, but he is one on
the Warriors radar and he's a very good young up
and coming player. And look, there's just so much talent
(13:22):
coming through now with the fact that these systems are
back in place and the Warriors are really sudden to
see those those rewards coming through now.
Speaker 2 (13:28):
I suppose the scouts, all the NRL clubs have been
kind of picking through the bones of that one. They
what about him? He doesn't get enough first grade Oh
what about him? Is that a real risk?
Speaker 3 (13:37):
Well, of course it is, and especially with Perth coming in,
Perth able to negotiate with players from November one, so
in a month from today for the twenty twenty seven season,
and then P and G are there's still a thing.
Well that's the thing. That's the thing that from what
I've heard, it's very up in the air at the moment.
But I do know that there are other people waiting
(13:58):
for those wheels to well and truly fall off and
ready to capitalize should that happen. But look at this
stage it's still P and G is still happening. But
you never know because it is a very miss his situation.
Speaker 2 (14:09):
Extremely messy. I don't believe you mentioned the Perth Quackers.
How could you. I'm not calling them the Bears. The
Bears are not from Perth. I'm running with Quackers instead
going to the final against Burley and that name rings
a bell because we have plenty of burly X players
as well at the Warriors. Understandable because they will bounce
around with various clubs. What are we standing here? Was
a New South Wales, but we're New Zealand, so we're
(14:30):
not up against Queensland. They did stick in the throat
of a few people, wouldn't it.
Speaker 3 (14:35):
Yeah, And I think what like I said before that
the fact that Burley is affiliated with the Broncos, one
of the few clubs that are. So you've got the Broncos,
have the Bears, They've got the woman's in the NLW,
they've got the men's team there. So it'll be great
for a Broncos hammering on Sunday. But one name that
Warriors fans might recall Paul Roach. He played four games
(14:55):
for the Warriors. He has been named to start hooker
for the Burly Bears on Sunday.
Speaker 2 (14:59):
Okay, so unlike the game that they played over the weekend,
which wasn't televised, it was some stream I couldn't even
pick up on a potato, so when you got to
see it, but I've seen some highlights, we get to
see it this weekend.
Speaker 3 (15:12):
Yes, that's right. It should be broadcast on TV for
everyone to see. And it is deserved. And there will
be lots of names that obviously Warriors fans will know.
As I said, thirteen or the seventeen tame to a
Pecky Ali Layer Twi, Edkossi, Moala, Graham, Tulfa, Tanner Boy,
Tanna Styalis, Smith, sam Hley, Bunty.
Speaker 2 (15:29):
I was waiting for that one. It's kind of like
a Sinara Bundi, isn't it be a nice way for
him to sign on?
Speaker 3 (15:35):
And the great thing is Darcy and I have to
say at least his one Cleary playing at the Grand
Final this year. It was just Cleary on the bench
for the Warriors.
Speaker 2 (15:42):
Results. Yeah, it couldn't help yourself, could you? It should
be good. This is great results. Looking forward to that one.
We'll move away now from the sideline to the oki.
And you've got a darts problem as well, haven't you.
In fact, I'm on trade me at the moment, trying
to get myself a slightly cheap seekond hand board, quality
board in a fight with someone. At the moment, I
think I'm at fifty bucks. Anyway, forgot, I want to
go back to playing that game. Tell us your story
(16:05):
about Tougher.
Speaker 3 (16:06):
Johnny Tata a great great worry about I say, Tafer. Yeah, oh, dear,
kick me out of the studio.
Speaker 2 (16:13):
I'm sorry.
Speaker 3 (16:14):
I'm sure he'll appreciate it. So the truck driver from
why noua Mata qualified for the World Darts Championships over
the weekend. He's going to be the fourteenth Kiwi to
represent New Zealand. At the event, he finished top of
the New Zealand standings, which is what got Ham qualified.
He's also qualified for the Ainsed Premier League, which is
a new event starting this weekend featuring eight of the
(16:35):
best Oceanic players and they essentially play a tournament win
it collects thirty Grand.
Speaker 2 (16:41):
Oceanne So some of the islands Australia and New Zealand.
Speaker 3 (16:43):
Yes, Australia New Zealand, so there's six Australian representatives and
then there's two from New Zealand. So Johnny Tarta Ben
Rob the two that qualified from New Zealand and they're
playing Melbourne this weekend and I think they've got Wellington
in early November. So it goes around lots of those
big cities, a bit like the Premier League you see
with the world's best, So that's something to look forward to.
Speaker 2 (17:01):
Don't take the same MC with them.
Speaker 3 (17:04):
They've got Russ Bray who is the referee of the
Iconic Voice. Know that wouldn't be if you would, so
he's coming down for that too, which is really cool.
But what made Johnny Tarto qualifying for the World Champces
even more special was in the final event of the
New Zealand Tour. He had a nine data in the
final against Ben rob and he's actually what I believe,
(17:26):
the second No New Zealander to hit a nine data
in a New Zealand ranking event. There was another one
that had won in an Australian one. But the fact
it was live streamed as well for everyone to see,
the fact he's missed it twice this year, he's missed
double twelfth to had it twice this year and then
in the final of the final event nails it. And
it's such a hard thing to do with nine data.
You see. These guys can do it for fun sometimes
(17:48):
the best of the best, but for a local guy to.
Speaker 2 (17:50):
Do it and getting yeah, that's the key thing. It's
an amazing achievement. So if you've ever tried throwing darts
out there, I'm sure all of you had at the
local pub, you know just how difficult that is. I
know what I've done justin Tafa right there you go,
Johnny Tata, Yeah, you see, my mind's going so fast,
Adhd that I can't focus on one or two things.
Speaker 3 (18:12):
I really really think Johnny is one to keep an
eye out for, especially in the coming years. He played
at the New Zealand Darts Masters earlier this year. There's
third time up on the on the stage there and
he was by far the probably best New Zealand performer
out of everyone. He's had a bit of a no
I wanna say, rapid rise of steady rise over the
years after getting back into the sport. He's beaten Peter
Wright up on the stage. He's played Luke let Lo,
(18:34):
Luke Humphrey. He's going price So look this is this
should be a good experience for him. And if there's
a Kiwi at the moment that is capable of going
on a little bit of a run with the new
format this year one hundred and twenty eight players, million
pound prize for the winner, it's Tata.
Speaker 2 (18:49):
Get on that case. And with that, Ben Francis, we
thank you very much for joining us in the chamber.
Speaker 3 (18:54):
Off you go, Cherio Darcy.
