This is Sportsfix Howard by News Talks ed B.

Speaker 2 (00:21):
Welcome, Welcome, Welcome, this the Sports Fixed podcast. Mynam is
Darcy Walter Grave. Thanks for your ears. It is Tuesday,
the seventh October twenty twenty five. Wind up for your entertainment. Today,
Q coach Stacy Jones named his squad for the upcoming
Pacific Championship and amongst the selections Saws Charnce, Nicole Klokstar.

(00:43):
He joins us to talk about this three way competition
against Tonga and Sam Muller. I'll go to my happy place,
which is planning race cars. I love my rubber, I
love my petrol and I love Bathurst that is coming
up this weekend. All hands on board for that, well
my hands anyway. And in the chamber I'm joined by

(01:04):
mister Nick Bewley. He's head of z B Sport in Canterbury.
Also covers my sorry ass when I'm sick or bored
or just can't you bother coming into work. We're going
to talk about the big sports stories today. That's our plan,
That's what our intentions are, so let's see if it

(01:24):
actually pays off. And thanks very much to DJ Gardener Homes,
New Zealand's most trusted home builder. Great to have you
all on board, right, let's do this. In other news,
how about a quick swipe of sport. Eh Kiwi team
has been named for the upcoming Pacific Championship here and
four and has been selected as half thatack and what

(01:47):
will be his international swan song. Certainly Jerome Hughes the
standout half of the NRL, well one of them anyway,
has too busted up to play here he coached. Stacy
Jones says he's known for a while that Jerome could
be unavailable.

Speaker 3 (02:02):
I spoke to Jerome about two months ago before he
broke his arm, when he was making his comeback, and
he said to me there, as soon as the season's done,
he'll be getting surgery on a shoulder.

Speaker 2 (02:12):
So very grateful to Jerome for letting us know early. Yeah,
and that means that Karen Porn is doing a Shawn
Johnson from last year, you know what I mean. Great
an emergency player, he'll be terrific. White Ferns got absolutely
pile driven by South Abriga last night in their second
Cricket World Cup game. He's in an all round up.

(02:32):
Mealy Kerr isn't freaking out about it though. If they
got wrecked by England for the previous game and they
came back and up in.

Speaker 4 (02:42):
Ferns, they obviousally bounced back.

Speaker 3 (02:44):
And you know, any player or any team have one
bad game, it doesn't make you a bad player or
a bad team. Things don't change overnight.

Speaker 2 (02:52):
And formatt NASCAR champ Kyle Larson thinks shanevan Gisbergen's five
race win record on street slash road courses will be
very very hard to beat.

Speaker 4 (03:04):
It's difficult, you know.

Speaker 5 (03:05):
He makes it look really really easy, and he's got
his own technique to rape for breaking and he'll tell
and all that, which you know, I don't know how
to do.

Speaker 4 (03:13):
I really don't think I could ever learn it.

Speaker 2 (03:15):
And yeah, just makes it next it tough and next
year card he's gonna nail the Ovals. You're all in trouble.
And that's Sport Today.

Speaker 4 (03:23):
Ish News.

Speaker 1 (03:26):
It's Sports Fix with Dancy Valdegrave.

Speaker 2 (03:30):
We're talking tee wee's and now and we're joined by
chance to call clock start. As we look to the
Pacific Championship. She's all on, I'm good a chance.

Speaker 3 (03:39):
How are you?

Speaker 5 (03:40):
Yeah, hey mate, how's it going good?

Speaker 2 (03:43):
Looking forward to the championship? I don't know if you
guys are, though, After such a huge season with the Warriors,
you get a cup of tea in her sit down
and then you're back into complete hammering again at the
hands of the Salmons and the Tomment's tough.

Speaker 5 (03:58):
Yeah, no, it is, it is. It's gonna be a
tough competition. But representing your country, your nation and putting
it on that black jersey, it definitely means lot. So
I know a lot of the boys will be feeling
the exact same way as I am, and ready to
get into camping and ripping.

Speaker 2 (04:16):
How good is it that a guy like Karen for
and has made himself available. All the experience that guy's got,
I'd suggest all the money that he's got, Not that
I'm within your team and he's doing a job, because
what's Shawn Johnson all over again? Isn't it you haven't
got Jerome Hughes.

Speaker 3 (04:32):
Yeah, it is, it is.

Speaker 5 (04:34):
Karen brings a lot of experience over three hundred games,
as you know, and I'm pretty sure like over thirty
thirty tests for the for the Q So it's it's
an enormous amount of experience that we're going to be
able to call on during this PAC Champs and he's
going to be able to lead the boys around the
park just as good as anyone as well. So yeah,
it's definitely a big step for us having him in

(04:57):
the in the squad and I'm looking forward to what
he brings all the time.

Speaker 4 (05:02):
Is that money that you spoke about?

Speaker 2 (05:03):
Interestingly, is it difficult for you to turn off your
Warriors head and turn on your Keywi's head to change
what you're doing and how you think?

Speaker 5 (05:13):
Oh? Nah, I would say everything's pretty similar if I'm
being honest. It's not too much of a change though
anything that is different as you're around different different players,
different players and different mates really, so that's probably well,
it's just as exciting as stepping into the Warriors camp,
but it's probably a breath of fresh air. As you said,

(05:37):
we had our big season here at the club and
I'm looking forward to taking all the learnings into this
New Zealand Keys camp.

Speaker 2 (05:46):
You've got a couple of guys come back from injury
that weren't around last year. That must be great to
see the likes Well, you've got them in your team,
Nelson and us off our solomony. You don't have to
tackle them yourself. But him man n caught a few
guys finding their way back into the side, so catching
up with old mates again.

Speaker 4 (06:03):
Yeah, no, it is.

Speaker 5 (06:04):
There's all players that bring a lot to the team
and they've been massive for their teams at Clubland. So
I'm looking forward to seeing them put their black jersey
on and represent their nation just as good as any
other time that they have.

Speaker 2 (06:19):
It's a real shame chance that the Australians are not
involved in this. They've got the lines too, they're over
there playing against England. Does that take much from the
presence of the competition in sport? Does it detract from it?

Speaker 1 (06:33):
Nah?

Speaker 4 (06:34):
I don't.

Speaker 5 (06:34):
I don't think so. If you look at the squads
that were announced for Tonga and some more, their squads
are just as good as any other squad in my opinion.
They've got they got talent and flair all.

Speaker 3 (06:46):
Right through it.

Speaker 5 (06:47):
So's it's it's going to be an exciting and it's
going to be a tough competition, you know, Australia like
you said, he never see participate in the Ashes Test,
and you know some more, we're the ones that are
knocked out England to move forward into that World Cup too,
So it's gonna be it's gonna be a tough competition
and there's nothing taken away from Australia wanting to go

(07:09):
off and participate in the Ashes Test.

Speaker 2 (07:12):
Ideally that'd be there because it's like you've got the NRL.
But as far as internationally go, this is the shop floor.
This is where you get to see the best of
the best. So it must be slightly irritating that they're
not going to be there. Not that you can control
that chance, but you'd expect more.

Speaker 4 (07:28):
Yeah, yeah, no, not really.

Speaker 5 (07:31):
I think like I said, the squads and Someone and
Song are are pretty top top quality and these talent
all throughout those squads. I mean you got Pain representing
some more, and you've got Roger try Vasashek there as well.
And then you look over to Tongue and they've got
Adam for No Blake, Paul Alamodi just at the top
of my top of my head. He had a great

(07:51):
season for Penrift. So they've got talent. All three of
their squads, premiership winners and both teams and it's just
going to be a tough competition.

Speaker 2 (07:59):
I tell you what their pack is scary, the tongue
and pack. You've got Lequa Halasima and Demetric Valmonga in
there too, and those guys have had outstanding season. I
suppose you count that with Aaron Clark, don't you. There's
some really good Into Warriors clashes going on in the series, Yeah.

Speaker 4 (08:16):
There is.

Speaker 5 (08:17):
And really proud of those two young boys getting picked
in their national team. I know both of them would
have had options for a lot of camps and I'm
looking forward to seeing what they can do on the
international stage. They both had great seasons with our club,
as you said, and that's going to be another step

(08:38):
up and I'm sure they're going to enjoy being in
camp and representing their nation.

Speaker 1 (08:42):
Proudly dissecting the sporting agenda, it's Sportsfix with Dancy Waldgrave.

Speaker 2 (08:50):
The greatest spectacle in motor sport. A hold on there,
s Indy five hundred, the race that stops in nation.
Oh no, that's the Melbourne Cup, badthirst, whatever you want
to tag it with, is huge. It's coming up on
Sunday and it's going to monster your television if you'll
let it right the way through the day. I don't

(09:12):
know if there's a more phenomenal race on planet Earth
than this particular race, for a number of reasons. A
the length of the track. B The length of the
race itself goes on for well over six hours, the
elevation involved in the track, it goes so far up
it comes so far down, the fact that it's a

(09:33):
road you can drive around in your spare time, but
you've got to stick to the speed limit. Mind the
fact that it's got such a rich history that involves
New Zealand drivers. I'm sure he sick the death of
hearing about the Lap of the Gods, but Greg Murphy
will probably have that written on his tombstone. That was
quite extraordinary. But even if and he's Lander not involved,

(09:56):
and there have been plenty of them, even if it's
just the Australians, the way the ossies cover this race
is beyond Compare the amount of cameras, the amount of experts,
the amount of re he plays, the amount of specialist
activity in the pits, along the pit lane, in the
crowd up the top. It just doesn't stop, and you

(10:17):
think that six hours plus of motorsport would be a
very difficult thing to keep you engaged right the way through.
But the way Ossie TV cover this, it just seems
like it's over in an hour. Bathhurst up this weekend.
It's on Sunday. And if there's somebody in your life
that loves Bathurst and you don't do them a favor,

(10:40):
leave the house for the day please and thank you.

Speaker 1 (10:44):
The Chamber is now in session on Sportsfax.

Speaker 2 (10:47):
And we open the chamber doors now and Nick Bewley
joins us from the christ Church Bureau, the man who
picks up the slack when I'm sick or want to
go on holiday. We thank you for that, Nick, and
thanks for joining us here in the chamber.

Speaker 4 (11:00):
No great to be back in the chamber, Darcy.

Speaker 3 (11:02):
And any time you need that sickness or that we
boost the entity and take a break.

Speaker 4 (11:08):
I'm happy to jump behind the hot year.

Speaker 3 (11:10):
Yeah.

Speaker 2 (11:10):
Well, my knee's getting taken apart in about a week,
so you never know you might be back again. Hey,
let's look at a couple of stories of the day.
First up, that Kiwi team has been named Stacy Joan
has Jones. Excuse me, let's not drop the plural, and
I suppose the big name out of this is Karen
Forurn at thirty five years old. This is his swan
song for the Kiwi and they kind of need him

(11:31):
because all our other halfs are broken, right.

Speaker 3 (11:34):
Yeah. It feels earily similar to last year, Darcy, when
Sean Johnson came out of retirement because Jeromes Hughes was
banged up and various other halfbacks were unavailable. Very similar
in the sense that you know, here is a halfback
in Kiaren Foran who retired after a glittering NRL career
across manly the Warriors and most recently the Gold Coast Titans,

(11:57):
that he has answered the sos on this occasion, similarly
to last year. Jerome Hughes and most of us saw
Sunday's NRL Grand Final, we played that for the Melbourne Storm,
but he's been the walking wounded for the best part
of eight weeks. A bun shoulder just recovered from a
broken arm. He's going to get that shoulder surgically repaired
in the off season. So a nice chance for Kieren

(12:18):
for And to bow out on his terms. The Kiwis
jersey has meant so much for such a long period.
He was actually I remember seeing him twelve months or
so ago when the Key's played down here in christ
Church and he was within the camp at that point
in time because he very much feels like there's a
future for him still in the game, whether that be
a coaching or behind the scenes.

Speaker 4 (12:38):
So now very much looking for to Karen for it,
and I think he will play.

Speaker 3 (12:42):
When you look at the rest of the squad, yes
they do get Dylan Brown back, but he's probably more
suited to the five eighth position as opposed to being.

Speaker 4 (12:50):
A half back. But yeah, you have a look through
the rest of the squad that they're going to need
Caaren for it.

Speaker 3 (12:54):
They are.

Speaker 2 (12:55):
There's no Australia involved in this, and it's shame the
Kangaroos aren't there, but they're off playing over in Britain.
I think the timing is absolutely awful. But let's not
take away from Tonga or Samo and what because they're selections.
They've got some class players playing there. So it's not
a case of no Australia and you Seeland have got

(13:15):
the title in the Pacific Championship.

Speaker 4 (13:17):
Yet certainly not no.

Speaker 3 (13:19):
The way that international rugby league eligibi. Eligibility rules work
whether you love it or you loathe it. There is
some serious class for Samaha and Tonger guys who have
played state of origin. Like Paying Hass for example, having
just won NRL Premiership with Brisbane, he's now committed to
playing for Samoa as opposed to playing for Australia. You
got guys like Brian Toto out of Penrith on the

(13:41):
wing for Samoa as well. Then you look over to
Tonga guys like Adam Fanola Blake captaining their team that
we're very familiar with being a former Warrior, and speaking
of warriors, they've got Lecqua Thereca Halasimashit the debut for them.

Speaker 4 (13:54):
So this is going to be a really tricky assignment
for Stacy Jones.

Speaker 3 (13:59):
As you mentioned, dars no guarantees, it's a tough you know,
back to back effectively, there's the wee buy in there
that you get the week off between the Samara and
the Tonga games and then a final across the Tasman
in Australia. And we saw last year how competitive both
these nations are, so it's going to be anything but easy.

Speaker 2 (14:17):
Yeah, and with no Australia. There is a disaster in
the way they've scheduled this. Without a doubt they want
rude league always had this problem as long as I've
been watching it about you, Nick, but they've just never
got it right. They've got such a good product and
we saw that at the final, which is one of
the most stunning games I've seen all year. And how

(14:38):
they can't kick on from that excuse the pun is
beyond me. What are they doing up there?

Speaker 3 (14:43):
Yeah? It is questionable, isn't it That we've got this
situation where Australia are heading away. They're the defending champions
from a men's perspective in the Pacific Championship, but they're
effectively relinquishing it to go up to Britain player three
Test ashes series up there.

Speaker 4 (15:00):
I think the powers that we really.

Speaker 3 (15:02):
Need to come together and why not incorporate Great Britain
into a Pacific Championships.

Speaker 4 (15:09):
Why don't we make this a five nations series? You
know that.

Speaker 3 (15:12):
I feel like international rugby league, it's just the ugly
duckling that's so often forgot about. Once we get through NRL,
Once the Powers have been in Australia, prioritize the state
of origin midyear, particularly for fans here in New Zealand.

Speaker 4 (15:26):
We just just sort of forgotten about that.

Speaker 2 (15:27):
They constantly prioritize them in the NRL. They don't care
about international league. And I know we can't sit there
and just deal with that and go, well, it is
what it is. There's got to be a push somewhere, Greg, Peter,
somebody in rugby league to go we have the product,
why don't we make the most of it. There are
some mouth ordering classes here, especially now, and I understand
what you mean about qualification for various teams, but it

(15:51):
is what it is. But some of these matchups could
be huge if the Australians were involved. It's just a
it's a crime against rugby league. There needs to be
an investigation.

Speaker 3 (16:01):
Yeah, Jeff Twov on the blar, I'm completely with you, mate,
we're singing off the same song sheet. I just think, yeah,
where it's ranked over in Australia and that's where all
the broadcast money and the priority lies. That they're going
to go State of oreguin one, you know, NRL one
B and we'll figure International regular League out down the line.

Speaker 4 (16:20):
But it shouldn't be that way around in my.

Speaker 2 (16:21):
View, scraps it's all coming in a week and a
half gets under way last night or White Ferns reasons
to celebrate last night. You got Sophie Devine chalking up
three hundred games of cricket for the White Ferns and
then you got Susie Baits for three hundred and fifty
games and what happens first ball duck for Susie Baits.

(16:44):
Saviie Divine did the work, but the team just fell away.
What four one, two, three, four, seven wickets for forty
four run janking to wear anything doing that? Are you? Yeah?

Speaker 4 (16:56):
Really tough sledding for this White Fans team.

Speaker 3 (16:58):
It was always going to be tricky opening up against Australia,
but this would have been one that circled to bounce back.
And South Africa had just come off a huge ten
wicket defeat to England. I think they got rolled by
for about sixty batting first and to not post a
competitive total again a frustrating for the White Ferns. They

(17:18):
must have two hundred and thirty seven against Australia and
two hundred and thirty one overnight against South Africa. South
afric You've got that target. With plenty of times spare
I think best part of nine overs. So it's just
it's just not enough. And they're coming into a really
critical part of this tournament now, if you're unaware, eight
teams competing, everyone plays every run, So seven pool games,

(17:39):
semi finalists are determined after that, so that the White
Ferns from here, they've got a pretty important three games
stretch where they've got Bungledesh next into Sri Lanka in
Sri Lanka at Colombo and then Pakistan. These are three
games that they're effectively must win now because of the
position they're in, and it starts with the runs. I think,
particularly batting first year, there's just not you know, you're

(18:01):
not going to win many ODIEI cricket games male or
female when you're posting two thirties.

Speaker 2 (18:05):
Wait, when you look at the makeup of the team,
they've got the players there to do that. I'd expect.
They've got some good young talent coming through and they've
got the seasoned veterans and we know we can kind
of rely on them. But with Susie Baits, she doesn't
score ducks, it doesn't happen, So that might be the end.

(18:25):
It might be a good way to start things off
with her. I don't think it's going to happen again, because,
as you said, must win, must win, must win, and
not right the way through to the end, but pretty
much so there are their backs against the wall.

Speaker 3 (18:36):
Yeah, and I think someone of the class and experience
of Susie Bates you just got to look at this
and hopefully move on, you know, to get a nine
ball duck first up, good ball, first up, overnight to
be trapped l BW. You know, you hope someone of
it can just water off the ducks back and move
on and runs up top when the power players and force,

(18:58):
when you've got those fielding restrictions, just critical to set
the toe and you can't just be over reliant on
Sophie Devine, who after two games has over two hundred runs,
have got one hundred and twelve.

Speaker 4 (19:08):
And at eighty five. You know, but you just can't
put it all on that lady's shoulders.

Speaker 3 (19:12):
She does enough for this team as it is, so
just needing a bit more key contributions from up top.
And if they are adding first, give give the fielders,
give the bowl as something to something to protect.

Speaker 2 (19:21):
Yeah, the only good thing about it is. The hours
are rotten. I managed to stay awake for the first
couple of hours and we're going to go to bed
so I don't get to see the destruction until I
wake up in the morning. And on that we're going
to let you go out of the chamber. Nick Immunly
from the christ Church Bureau, thanks so much for your
time and expertise, real pleasure cheers.
