Speaker 1 (00:09):
You're listening to a podcast from News Talks EDB follow
this and our wide range of podcasts now on iHeartRadio.

Speaker 2 (00:17):
This is Sportsfix.

Speaker 1 (00:19):
Howard by News Talk said.

Speaker 3 (00:20):
Be hello there, Welcome to the back end of the
Monday to Friday working week. Welcome to the front end
of another massive sporting weekend. Welcome to Sports Fix in
association with GJ. Gardner Holmes, New Zealand's most trusted home builder.
We're going to try and break it all down on
Jason Pine.

Speaker 4 (00:36):
And my name is Darcy Walter Gravey. End of the
week almost, But like the week of sport just goes
on and on and on. It's gotten momentumly you wouldn't believe.

Speaker 3 (00:45):
Right absolutely right now, when you want to find out
about an all Blacks test, I find the best thing
to do is go to a night and you've got
a night to chat to us today.

Speaker 4 (00:54):
Yeah, you may have heard of him. His name is
Steve Hansen's quite a handy coach. He had a fantastic career,
has been involved in a number of Grand Slam tournaments.
So we'll have a listen to Shag and now what
he mates of what's happening against Scotland this week Kendon
indeed for the rest of the Grand Slam as well,
he's been keenly watching the action from his home in Japan.

Speaker 3 (01:16):
I bet he has well, he can give his view.
We might throw our views and I've got some views
on the derby. Want to talk a bit of a
key we rugby league and some other bits and pieces too,
plus the latest and sports news. How will we get
it all in?

Speaker 1 (01:27):
We'll give it a crack.

Speaker 3 (01:28):
Let's get into it in other news. As always, let's
get things going with a look at some of the
big sports stories around today. The All Blacks are absorbing
the sights and more particularly the sounds of Edinburgh as
they prepare to play Scotland Sunday morning. Coach Scott Robertson
says one persistent drone has covered their week staying in Edinburgh.

Speaker 5 (01:48):
He's got a bedfut from the corner for the last
three days. I'm not sure if he's intended to be
there or not, but see what says like the same song,
but it's not and I'm not saying that after a
while they all blur together.

Speaker 3 (02:01):
Meantime, Super Rugby boss Jack Mensley insists talks of using
a draft system remain ongoing that concept would see an
even distribution of emerging talent across the franchises. Merestly, They'll
admits a core obstacle remains. You're a club that has
a strong pathway and at a really strong region.

Speaker 4 (02:21):
You probably don't want artificial mechanisms to take your talent
away from your region.

Speaker 3 (02:27):
And Breakers basketball coach but Terry Copenan has lauded his
team's defense despite an eighty three seventy nine defeet to
the Adelaide thirty sixers in their A and b OL
basketball match in christ Church.

Speaker 4 (02:38):
We always had to put the two guys on price
the game blank. Kind of worked that way, but then
efensively where you were going to find it enough?

Speaker 2 (02:45):
You know solutions in dan.

Speaker 4 (02:48):
Use and a villion.

Speaker 1 (02:49):
It's Sportsfix with Jason Pine and Dussy Watergrave.

Speaker 4 (02:53):
We'll join now by former All Black coaches at Night
of the Realm as well. His name is this Stephen Hanson.
Get a Steve, How are you very good?

Speaker 2 (03:00):
Thanks yourself?

Speaker 4 (03:01):
Yeah, no, not bad, looking forward to the rest of
this Grand Slam tour. Quite poignant for you because you
were involved in a Grand Slam town at a coaching level,
so you know exactly what this entails and how how
difficult it is for tests and four consecutive week week.
So it's a lot to two, isn't it.

Speaker 6 (03:20):
Well it is, and you know the quality of the
teams you're playing make it difficult, but it's about and
you're planning right. The last couple of games I think
are always the tough ones because you know you're coming
to the end of your season and players are trying
to get tired, and you know if you've used the
same group all the way through, it becomes difficult.

Speaker 2 (03:42):
But you know they've got a really good side against Scotland.

Speaker 6 (03:45):
Which is I think a re mark of respect for
Scotland and their desire to actually go for this Grand Slam.

Speaker 2 (03:51):
So looking forward to Sena.

Speaker 4 (03:54):
So the adjustments that Scott raised Robinson has made after
that Irish match that they're minimal, but with an eye
to the future, not they can think too much about
England because it's about the present, isn't it. So what
have you made of what he's done with the playing stuff.

Speaker 6 (04:10):
I think he's just selected a side that he thinks
that can get the job done and it's got a
little the difficult side to play. They're always strong upfront
and you need a good forward pack to play them,
and their backs have been one of their they go
to things in the last couple of years as well.

Speaker 2 (04:29):
So they're a lot stronger than people give them credit for.

Speaker 6 (04:32):
And every day is a day closer to that day
when you know they get the one that they're really
really striving for.

Speaker 2 (04:40):
So there's a bit on the line this weekend.

Speaker 4 (04:43):
Sadly, that's been the narrative over the last few years.
Teams have been up ending the all Blacks that shouldn't
have done it in places they shouldn't have. Is that
the all blacks slowing up? Is that the rest of
the world suddenly realizing that they actually can compete at
that level?

Speaker 2 (04:57):
Oh look, I just think it's life.

Speaker 6 (04:58):
I think you know, when you're in a dry spellue
one day closer to it raining. So it's the same
and rugby, isn't it. When you've got a record that
says we're never been beaten by such such a country,
then you're just one day closer to it happening.

Speaker 2 (05:13):
It's going to.

Speaker 6 (05:13):
Happen one day, and you know you can't be fearful
of that. You've just got to go out. You're planning
and prepare well and I'm sure they're doing that.

Speaker 4 (05:22):
The pickups from the Irish game, aside the fact that
the referee was well out of his depth, what are
the positives out of that game? And if you were
coaching or that you are, what would you be leaning into.
As far as improvements from the All Blacks from that Irish.

Speaker 6 (05:35):
Match, I think the last twenty minutes they actually the
players themselves just decided this is what.

Speaker 2 (05:44):
We're going to do.

Speaker 6 (05:45):
I like the combination of the two Damien and Boden
both being there. I think that that allowed them to
play more more attacking rugby. Geordie not being there, they've
lost that, you know, a kicking option at second five
and so I think having Damien on on the field
at the same time as bows Is always gives.

Speaker 2 (06:07):
Them an extram and a leg.

Speaker 6 (06:09):
But Leicester was very good with his off loads and
you've got some big ball running loose forwards who can
open teams up. So we've got to do the hard
work up front first or allow that platform to be
able to do what they do, and I'm sure that's
what they're looking at.

Speaker 2 (06:27):
Keep it simple, and just go out and have some fun.

Speaker 6 (06:30):
They look like they're having fun, you know, in that
last twenty minutes they did.

Speaker 4 (06:34):
As far as dealing with a referee, that's being a
little pedantic. It does slow your rhythm up. So I
suppose it understandable that it was almost a little clumsy
the start of that game. Is there a tried and
true way of dealing with the referee like that? Plainly
they worked it towards the end. But what's the trick
in that?

Speaker 2 (06:52):
Do you think, Steve, we'll stop using tmos? That would
be the best thing.

Speaker 4 (06:58):
I'm not going to argue with that one, because when
you go into the States and you're trying to promote
the game as Americas to be sitting here for sixty
minutes going what are you doing? Right?

Speaker 6 (07:08):
Yeah, I think rugby has done some wonderful things over
the years. But you know, and they introduced the TMO,
but it's got out of the end and you've even got.

Speaker 2 (07:18):
Richie saying it. If he's saying it, it must be right.

Speaker 4 (07:21):
Well, no one's going to argue against him or you,
to be quite frank, we've got problems with the locks
kind of a little short which is a strange thing
to call a lot on locks. Josh Lord's teamed up.
He's been given the nod because he performed so well
at the last minute. Is this an area of concern
do you think for the All Blacks for these last
three tests?

Speaker 2 (07:42):
No, not at all.

Speaker 6 (07:43):
I think New Zealand at the moment when you look
at the talent that's on the paper, it's a very
very talented group of players and you'd expect them to
kick on and become a very very good side. So
Lord's been in and around the team for a wee while.
He's obviously got a lot of talent, and he's been

(08:05):
struck down with a few injuries, but we saw what
he's capable of. He came on and controlled the game
really well from a lineup point of view, was his calling,
and he stole a few. So he's a big, tall
man and he's only going to get better and bet
at the time, and Dari's already shown that he can
play at that level and the Fabian's hit the scene running,

(08:27):
hasn't he And.

Speaker 2 (08:29):
He's an exciting option as well.

Speaker 6 (08:31):
And then you've got Scott'll come back from his cut
like little heel up and he'll be fine Sports Fax.

Speaker 3 (08:37):
Sensexces big night in coming at Sky Stadium and Wellington tomorrow.
It's a League Derby number one for the twenty twenty
five twenty twenty sixth season as Wellington Phoenix welcome Auckland
FC to the Caketon. Of course, we know Auckland FC
dominated the derby's last season a two nil win in
Wellington two to one and six to one victories at

(09:00):
go Media Stadium to well and truly claim the bragging rights,
So fast forward to the start of this season. I
truly this is the Phoenix's best chance of a Derby
win since the first clash last season. While Auckland FC
have started this season okay, they're unbeaten, top of the
table after three matches. You can't really do much better

(09:21):
than that. They haven't quite for me, recaptured the form
which saw them rarely dominate their maiden campaign last season.
Wellington Phoenix also unbeaten. They've looked really good, particularly in
their last two outings and probably should have beaten the
Central Coast Mariner's last time out, and if they had
they would have been top of the table. The first

(09:43):
goal strikes me as absolutely crucial for a couple of reasons.
If Wellington Phoenix were to open the scoring, they would
rarely bring the crowd into the game, their home crowd.
They would be vociferous and loud and hostile, and Auckland
FC would have to deal with that and also deal
with the second reason the first goal is important, and

(10:04):
that is that they have never won a game in
which they have conceded first. Auckland FC have never taken
three points from one nil down. So get one mill
ahead if you're Wellington Phoenix and you rarely do historically
and on the day, give yourself a big advantage. That
early goal is so important, and so for the Phoenix

(10:27):
I believe it's crucially important that they start in positive fashion,
that they have courage, that they don't just go out
there to try and soak up Auckland f C pressure
and hit them on the brake, that they go on
the front foot at home and rarely start with intent
in this derby tomorrow night. Whichever way it goes, it

(10:49):
looks set to be another really really exciting chapter in
the already exciting rivalry between New Zealand's two A leg sites.

Speaker 1 (10:59):
The Chamber is now in session on Sportsfax.

Speaker 3 (11:04):
Great to hear the thoughts of Sir Steve Hansen on
Sports Fix. We less immortals, I think, are all so
entitled to our opinion. Any universe in which Scotland beat
the All Blacks on Sunday morning, does yeah?

Speaker 4 (11:18):
The universe where the referee has an undue influence over
the game, The universe where some people get red cards
for high tackles, the universe where ill discipline can cost
the All Blacks their win. And that is clear and present,
isn't it.

Speaker 3 (11:37):
I don't like those universes very much. If I'm with you,
I know you've proposed them completely logically and quite rightly,
but I don't like any of those universes. Look but
you're right though, those things could and do happen an
international rugby and have to look back a week to,
you know, a TMO getting it wrong so much so
that that to resend the red card for Tiger Burn midweek.

(11:59):
I look at the teams, though, does and I do
like the look of Scotland with Finn Russell obviously a
big part at ten on Typo Lot two is terrific
for the Lions this year. He's in the twelve jump
up and wearing the captain's armband. It's the one hundredth
anniversary at murray Field. But I still like the All Blacks.
I still think.

Speaker 4 (12:15):
They'll be okay.

Speaker 3 (12:16):
I like the team. The twenty minutes at the end
of last week gave me great confidence. If they can
do that for half even three quarters of this game,
they should be too good, shouldn't they.

Speaker 4 (12:26):
Well, they've had minimal changes to the liner. You've got
to like that. They basically haven't really fiddled with the
back line at all, have they, And that's good. Front
row looks good and the loose forward trere is slightly different.
But I think Simon Parker all spa as I believe
he's nicknamed over there, probably needs to becop a ten

(12:48):
a liedown before the English match. But it seems like
a really sensible sight. And if I'm QUINTUPI I'm freaking
out right now. Who wiped him out a few years ago? Jason?

Speaker 3 (12:58):
I thought Darcy swained it?

Speaker 4 (13:00):
Indeed, how many Darcies are playing for Scotland this weekend?
I've got you.

Speaker 3 (13:05):
I wondered where you were taking me Tell them, Yeah.

Speaker 4 (13:11):
I've never trusted guys with that name. Neither of a
terrible terrible budge. Well, I'm overwhelmingly positive about this, although
I do believe the All Blacks are going to be
playing in white, and we know what happens with them
when they don't blame in a black strip.

Speaker 3 (13:26):
Well, they've never lost to Scotland. I don't expect that
to be threatened. But I have been known to be
wrong most days. So let's see what happened to you.

Speaker 4 (13:34):
More like a dollar I think seven or dollar six
favorite against Ireland when they fell over at Soldier Field
nine years ago, and they're only paying a dollar twenty seven.
The All Blacks for this and the guys who set
those odds, they know a few things about. Although pointed
out by Jason Haller and yesterday that their lead up,
their warm up probably was an idea they got. They

(13:56):
played an American team and they beat them like eighty five, Neil,
so they're probably not exactly ready for the action.

Speaker 3 (14:02):
Quick wit on the cricket last night, I know you
would have had eyes on it. Mark Chapman batted well
Western He's got close, didn't they?

Speaker 1 (14:08):
You know?

Speaker 3 (14:08):
For as you mentioned yesterday, a team that's been talked
about as one of the worst Western dast sides. Ever,
the tour here they were pretty close to going to
nil up in that series.

Speaker 4 (14:17):
No one told them, did they why They're like, no, no,
we're not there. As far as the entertainment packages can
exencern win or lose, that there would spectacul of fun
last night. It really was. And is that maybe because
Eden Park is such a bizarre shape the attitude of
the players coming in, I couldn't tell you, but as

(14:38):
far as an entertainment was concerned, that was right out.
That was a heap of fun, which means I think
a lot of people are going vyballs there when they
go to Nelson for the next two before they head
down to Dunedin.

Speaker 3 (14:48):
Absolutely yeah, I think they'll be good eyes and they
love their cricketer Nelson. They absolutely love it down their
day games on Sunday and Monday. To look forward to
Just a quick word on the league. The KeyWe's up
against Tour some More in the men's Pacific Championship Final
in Sydney's Sunday night. Do you think the KeyWe's were
surprised by how close some More got to them in
the game round one and therefore will be a lot

(15:10):
more wary in the Final on Sunday.

Speaker 4 (15:12):
I'd be surprised if they were surprised Stacy James didn't
come down in the last shower. And if you look
at the the team and the man power that tore
some more possess and you pick through that, you think,
actually a hold on. These are a very handy team and
South Pacific rugby leagues really developing. And when you look

(15:34):
at what's the figure of Jason, I think that's fifty
six percent of the NRL now or of pacifica descent
and a lot of these guys are going back to
play for their homelands and there's some amazing players, so
I don't think they underestimated. And I thought that you've
got to be impressed by Samo. This is not a

(15:54):
lay down massa over the weekend. The any sad thing
about its being played in Sydney in Akland, that's another story.

Speaker 3 (16:00):
Yeah, that is odd, isn't It'll make it all the
sweeter when the Kiwi Ferns beat the Australia Jillarous in
the early game and take bragging rights in the in
the women's specific championship. Just part of a jam pack
sporting weekend. That's all we have time for though in
the chamber today es go or leave.

Speaker 4 (16:17):
More's the point out of.

Speaker 1 (16:18):
Here, needing a VEX, We've got just the ticket. It's
Sports Fix powered Blay News Talks.

Speaker 4 (16:24):
VV and out of here.

Speaker 3 (16:26):

Speaker 4 (16:31):
