Speaker 1 (00:00):
Political analyst Ben Rose joins us now. And of course,
at the recent Lincoln Reagan dinner by held by the
Allen County Republican Party, Lieutenant Governor Jim Tressel was the
featured speaker. Also, local Congressman Jim Jordan was in attendance
and addressed the assembled of Republicans as well, and included

(00:21):
Ben and Ben. Of course, Jim Jordan and Jim Tressel
sort of different personalities, and I guess it's fair to
say we don't totally know all of Tressel's political proclivities
a sense, he's just new to the politicals realm. But
their method of addressing the crowd, I'm sure was quite different, right, Well.

Speaker 2 (00:43):
It was quite different, but both it was quite different.
But both both gentlemen gave what was an even moderate present.

Speaker 1 (00:55):
And of course, for Jordan, he's a high level and
high a visibility leader of the Republican Party, and with
everything happening in Washington, there was a lot for him
to do. What did he choose to hit on with
the crowd.

Speaker 2 (01:11):
He chose to have a little bit of nostalgia about
his history and politics and how twenty five years ago
he decided he was going to run for the State Senate.
He was a member of the House at the time,
and the seat was open, and everybody, including Governor Taft

(01:33):
and President of the Senate tacked finding and the local
people were at the beginning for somebody else. And that
was the first time that people of statewide got to
see the political skills of Matt Huffman. And it wasn't
very long before Jim was in the Senate, despite the

(01:54):
opposition of the governor and the President of the Senate.

Speaker 1 (01:57):
What exactly did did Huffman do that? I guess I'm
sure it was a lot of behind the scenes stuff,
but talk about that relationship that developed there.

Speaker 2 (02:08):
What he did was retail politics as it's been practiced
in Allen County. He got his candidate out there, they
went door to door, they talked to interest groups, and
the hold they won the election.

Speaker 1 (02:21):
And of course that was when he was running for
state Senate. Allen County would have been part of his district,
as opposed to when he was in the Ohio House.

Speaker 2 (02:30):
It was not right, that's correct. Yeah, he was absolutely
new to the average Republican voter in Allen County. I
think another thing that was we began to see what
has become the Republican Party, a very much more conservative
party than it was during the Great Years or the

(02:50):
Bush years, and a party that had no forgiveness for
legislators who were not right to life on the abortion issue.

Speaker 1 (03:01):
Well, then after Jordan spoke Ben, it was the time
for Coach Tressell. And of course he's been charged with
sort of overseeing, if you will, the areas of education
and how that works to develop the workforce. And I
would imagine what he talked about was what he's gathered

(03:23):
here in the first couple of months as Lieutenant governor,
and maybe some ideas moving forward. But what kind of
things did Jim Tressel talk about.

Speaker 2 (03:33):
Jim Trussell talked about Jim Trustle the man, and the
public official and the private citizen and what we should
expect of all three categories in terms of character, in
terms of meaning and challenges that the state faces. He

(03:53):
essentially said in his remarks that he didn't know everything
a about every thing in state government, but he was
learning and he founded his success as a football coach.
He is a university president, president of Youngstown State University
for twelve years, and well prepared him for this, But

(04:15):
here is he laid out an ethic more than a
practical political agenda. Oh, he feels is at a place
where it can succeed and you get stronger and better
than it has. He was very pro might the wine.
Our current governor was term limited, but essentially he said,

(04:37):
here is what we ought to be doing in terms
of how we conduct ourselves and how we solve problems.
It was a moderate approach which will do him great
help if he just decides to run for governor and
can get out of a Republican primary. He demonstrated remarkable

(04:57):
abilities as a person who can in to what the
ordinary order in the general election is interested in hearing.

Speaker 1 (05:06):
Well, I guess that's the big question. Ben. You know,
Treustl has been pretty well mum on the question of
whether he wants to run for governor, and recently he
said he wasn't considering it right now. But that's not
a denial of any interest, just says he's not considering
it right now. And of course I think Trussell, like

(05:29):
anybody else, you have to listen to what is said
rather than doing for any meaning, Do you have any
other better read on maybe his political future? From the
early returns on his run as the Lieutenant governor.

Speaker 2 (05:45):
Well, I've talked to a number of insiders off the record,
and I think there's a general consensus among close observers
of I thinks at the state level, Mike de Wine
is not enshused with the current candidates for governor in

(06:05):
terms of what he thinks of the state needs. And
he went out and he recruited Jim Trussell, drove up
to his home, and Trussell gave a humorous account of that,
a very human account. But I think what's happening behind
the scenes is a test to see whether Jim Trussell

(06:26):
could indeed win a Republican primary. If he can't win
a Republican primary, he's not going to run. A number
of Republican leaders will say, let's get this guy in
the race, and let's get him out of a primary somehow,
and we've got our strongest candidate to win a general election.

(06:49):
That's particularly true uncertain state of the economy and the
uncertain state of national security governance. It's pretty clear that
do line it's going to urge Trustle to run for governor.

Speaker 1 (07:05):
Well, only time will tell, and of course, by this
time next year, we will know this answer because the
campaign will be afoot, so we'll see how that all
turns out. Ben Rose is our political analyst. Ben thanks
for checking in.

Speaker 2 (07:20):
You're most welcome
