The Celtics looked like themselves during the first half of their matchup with the Bucks, scoring 67 points on 52.4 percent shooting. That offensive rhythm somehow disappeared during the second half while Bobby Portis (27 points) and Kyle Kuzma (31 points) caught fire for Milwaukee. A couple positive takeaways? Jaylen Brown notched another efficient 30-point game, and Jordan Walsh continue to impress at both ends. We discuss it all in tonight’s episode of SOUND OFF.

Speaker 1 (00:06):
Sound off would be bokes on a mid game offensive
drop off like you have never seen before from the
Boston Celtics. This was not exactly Boston's night. This is
the sound Off postgame podcast presented by Exfinity Mobile Listen.
The Celtics scored at least thirty two points during each
of the first two quarters of Thursday Night's game out

(00:29):
in Milwaukee. During the second half, they scored thirty four
points total during the final two quarters. So I'm gonna
repeat that again. During the first two quarters of this game,
the Boston Celtics scored at least thirty two points during
each of those two quarters. Then in the second half,
in total, they scored thirty four I don't think I've

(00:52):
ever seen anything like this before. Offense was humming, ball
was moving, Celtics looked they like they had looked the
last few weeks. And then you come out of the
half and it just disappears the offense got stale. They
weren't attacking, felt like that they were on their heels
a little bit from the pressure that Milwaukee was bringing

(01:15):
to the table. Offensively, or excuse me, defensively, they missed
something like sixteen or seventeen straight three pointers. It was crazy.
It felt unprecedented in Celtics history. What we saw tonight
in terms of that offensive drop off, Now, that's not
something that we have come to expect from this team.
This is one of the best offensive groups in the NBA.

(01:37):
So one bad half and on the other side of
the ball, Milwaukee put together a great half to wind
up being able to win this game. Listen, the Bucks
shot sixty three percent from the field during the second half,
fifty eight percent from three. Compare that to the Celtics. Yikes,

(01:58):
do we even want to talk about it? We're going
to talk talk about it. I repeat, the Buck shot
sixty three percent from the field during the second half,
fifty eight percent from three. The Celtic shot twenty six
percent from the field eleven percent from three. Yikes. That's
how a game turns into a runaway win for the

(02:20):
other team, and that is exactly what happened for the
Milwaukee Bucks. You got to you gotta give them credit.
They played well. Bobby Portis unbelievable. Kyle Kuzma unbelievable. Those
two guys were unconscious all night, especially during that second half.
Bobby Portis was seven for nine during the second half

(02:42):
alone eighteen points during those final two quarters. Kyle Kuzma
six for eight from the field during those second two
quarters for thirteen points. And get this, for the entire night,
those two guys scored fifty eight combine points on twenty

(03:02):
four for thirty shooting, twenty four for thirty shooting. If
you can't do the math, that's eighty percent shooting from
the field. And these guys weren't just dunking the ball
and making layups all night. They were making some tough shots,

(03:23):
some three pointers, some deep shots, some turnaround fadeaways. Like
these guys were on fire. And as I say often,
as coaches say often, as anyone around basketball says, often,
if you let an opposing team that's not as good
as you are, not quite as talented as you are.
And that is the case. This year. Milwaukee has not

(03:45):
been a good basketball team. The Celtics have been a
very good basketball team. So in this case, if the
Celtics allow the Bucks to hang around and then catch
their rhythm, especially during the second half, that is so
hard to turn off. It's like once that cat blows off,
you just can't get that cat back on. Because this

(04:09):
was a night where the Bucks were finally feeling good
about themselves, and once that momentum started, they just carried
it through to the finish line. It was impressive play
by the Bucks. You gotta give them credit. Okay, they
played well, and combine that with the Celtics not playing well,
that's how this game turned on its head. A quick

(04:31):
message from our partner, Exfinity Mobile. Whether you're cheering on
the Celtics at the garden or catching the game on
the road, you need a network that delivers no drop calls,
just smooth connections. Exfinity Mobile puts intelligent Wi Fi first
and five G when it matters most. It's the kind
of double double coverage you can trust anywhere life takes you.

(04:53):
Exfinity imagine that. Now. Listen, some people are gonna talk
after this game about the Celtics losing their rhythm from
a couple of days off. We'll all remember it's been
since Sunday that the Celtics have not played a game.
They had Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday off. Obviously, Wednesday they

(05:15):
practiced and they flew out to Milwaukee, but it was
a non game day. That was the most non game
days that they have had in gosh, I don't even remember,
but it feels like they've been playing every other day
for a while. In fact, that's the longest stretch that
they've had off since November thirteenth to fifteenth, so basically

(05:37):
a full month since they've had more than two days off.
And they come out of this game or they come
out of that break, that three day stretch. And this
is where I would disagree with the people who may
think that the Celtics just didn't have their rhythm coming
out of the break. They did like, they played really
well during the first half. You look at the numbers

(06:02):
which are just stark in stark contrast to the second half.
During the first half, the Celtics shot fifty three percent
from the field, forty eight percent from three point range,
twelve assists, like the ball was popping. They had great energy.
Jordan Walsh amazing. We're going to talk about that in
a little while, but he was great. Jalen Brown was great,

(06:24):
even you know, Peyton Pritcher scored eleven points, Derek White
scored nine, like this, this was the same offense that
we've seen and then during the second half it just
fell apart. So for the people who might say that
the Celtics lost their rhythm because of the break and

(06:45):
that they weren't able to maintain that level of play
that they had put together over the last couple of
weeks when they went on this little stretch of I
believe it was ten to two in twelve twelve games.
I don't think that that's the case. I actually think
think that they had that same rhythm during the first
half and then unfortunately it just somehow disappeared. And I'm

(07:06):
not sure exactly why that happened, but I'm sure the
Celtics are going to try to put their finger on
that and try to figure that out and turn things
around for their next game, which will be on the fifteenth. Now,
a couple of positives to take away from this loss,
as I mentioned them already. Jalen Brown still sizzling hot.
Another thirty points during this game on only seventeen shots.

(07:28):
He shot ten of seventeen from the field during this game,
so another really strong performance from him. Tried to give
the Celtics a little bit of juice there during the
fourth quarter, but they just couldn't get it going as
a team. This was his fourteenth thirty point game of
the season. That's in twenty four games that he's played in,
so fourteen out of twenty four he has broken the

(07:50):
thirty point barrier and just having one heck of a
season that Jalen Brown is putting together right now, also
having a great season. Jordan Walsh wildly impressive night for him,
in particular during the first half. He finished the game
with twenty points, eight rebounds, three steals, shot eight for
ten from the field during the first half alone eighteen

(08:14):
points and had not missed a shot at the break,
so that's eighteen points on one hundred percent shooting. He
now has multiple halves this season when he has scored
at least fifteen points and shot one hundred percent from
the field. That has never been done by any Celtic
in history. According to our Taylor Snow that's a big deal.

(08:36):
Anytime you can say you did something that no one
else in Celtic's history has done, that's a big deal.
This team has been around since nineteen forty six, so
we are talking about almost eighty years of history. No
one had done what Jordan Walsh has now done. Again,
multiple halves this season where he scored at least fifteen

(08:59):
and shot one hundred percent from the field, so he
continues to play at a high level. Really gave the
Celtics great energy at both ends of the court, in
particular during that first half, but he, much like the
rest of the team, just dropped off during the second
half and they just didn't have it. So it is
what it is, just one of those nights. Let's dive
into some comments from our fans. First up, we've got

(09:21):
Connecticut Man who's got a comment on the schedule and
not really understanding why the Celtics you're only playing a
couple games over a long stretch here, and also amid
that why there was some limited minutes for a couple
of key Celtics. And then we've got Aussie wild celt
who has a comment on that stretch that we talked

(09:41):
about where the Celtics played great during the first half
and then did not play so great during the second half.
Aussy Wildcat seems to think that they've put their their
finger on exactly why that happened. So let's dive into
the comments here again. First one up coming from Connecticut man.
I film here one put your mobile bill in half

(10:07):
and save sixty five dollars a month. For your first
year with Expinity Mobile. All right, Connecticut man says, not
really clear to me why we have two games in
ten days or whatever, and JB and White only played
twenty nine minutes and sat while the game got out
of hand. All right, First and foremost, this is not

(10:29):
a sarcastic correction, but this is a correction. It's two
games and eleven days for the Celtics. First and foremost,
let's address that. The reason why this is happening is
because this is what a lot of people are starting
to call the NBA Cup break. Okay, As the NBA
is putting on these quarterfinals, semi finals and finals games
for the NBA Cup, the rest of the team, excuse me,

(10:51):
the rest of the league has to fill in the
other days with their regular season games, and the NBA
wants to spread those games out. So as a result,
the Celtics did not advance into the NBA Cup quarter finals,
excuse me, and semi finals or finals obviously, and as
a result, they are playing two regular season games in
Those games were tonight in Milwaukee and then Monday, Detroit

(11:13):
comes to town to take on the Celtics at TD Gardens.
So two games over eleven days. It's a nice little
break for teams to get practice in and try to
figure out their rhythm. Hopefully the Celtics do that after
this game. Now getting into the minutes for JB and White,
I actually don't feel like those guys were riding the
bench while this game got out of hand. This game

(11:36):
started to slip away during the third quarter. It was
the fourth quarter is when it got bad. But the
third quarter is when things really started to flip in
the story of this game started to flip into Milwaukee's direction. Okay,
And during that third quarter, you look at the box score,
Derek White played almost nine minutes of the twelve minutes

(11:57):
during that quarter. Jalen Brown played more than ten minutes
of the twelve minutes of that third quarter, and Jalen
Brown was the only person on the team to score
more than two points during that frame. These guys can't
play the entire second half, okay. And also they were

(12:18):
on the floor while the momentum changed. So personally, I
feel like it sounds to me like you are asking
for Joe Mizula to have put Jalen and Derek out
there for big minutes during the fourth quarter, Like basically,
the Celtics, the game's getting away a little bit, start
them in the fourth quarter and then leave them out

(12:39):
there to try to win the game. You can't do that.
You gotta mix up these guys minutes number one, but
number two, it's not like the Celtics were playing great
while those guys were on the floor during the third quarter.
And that's kind of my point here, is that those
guys and the guys that were around them on the
court were the ones who weren't exactly playing well enough

(13:00):
to maintain the lead they had during the first half.
And number two, stay close during the second half. Milwaukee
pulled ahead by I believe it was eight points during
that third quarter, but it wasn't necessarily the lead that
they built. It was the way that they built it
in the momentum that got behind them as they were

(13:20):
building that lead, like you just felt like, all right,
this one's getting away, and it is going to be
so incredibly difficult to reverse this energy and momentum again.
It's already flipped once from the Celtics to the Bucks.
It's very difficult to then flip it back again into
the Celtics favor. And they weren't able to do that.

(13:42):
So I understand what you're saying that you really wish
that Joe Missoula would have had Jaylen Brown and Derek
White out on the floor for the majority of the
fourth quarter while the lead was ballooning for Milwaukee. But
both of those guys played almost very the high majority
of the third quarter, and it just wasn't realistic for
them to go out there in the fourth. Number one
and number two, they were on the court when the

(14:05):
Celtics weren't playing great, So it's not like they were
going to solve all the problems. It wasn't a guarantee
that if they did play all the fourth quarter they
would have solved the problem. So appreciate the comment here
from Connecticut man. Hopefully I explained some things there for you,
all right. Second and final comment of the night coming
in from Aussie Wilde celt who says, first half we

(14:27):
played like we did on our five game winning streak.
The second half was like when the Celtics went zero
to three to start the season. Why did the Celtics
do this and just change rhythm all of a sudden,
play fast, then play slow. I don't understand why, Mark,
all Right, I'm gonna try to answer this, and this
is without obviously being in the locker room, without being

(14:49):
a coach, without being a player. But this is just
my perspective. Sometimes this just happens in the NBA on
the court. It probably happens in college too, and it's
it's kind like an experience that's impossible to explain exactly
why it happens. Sometimes it happens when a team is
playing for the fifth time in seven nights. Sometimes it

(15:11):
happens when a team is playing its first home game
after a long road stretch. Sometimes it happens after a
team has a few days off. You just can't explain it.
But sometimes the game just gets away and just like
momentum can build in a positive way, momentum can build,
in my opinion, in a negative way. And that's exactly
what happened to the Celtics tonight. They were playing great.

(15:33):
To your point here, Ossie Wild celt the Celtics were
playing great during that first half. They scored what was
it sixty five points during the first half on great shooting,
what was it sixty seven points during the first half,
and they shot better than fifty percent from the field,
like they were playing with great energy, great effort, great togetherness,

(15:54):
like they looked like the team that has been winning
all these games of late, and then during the sec half,
it it just disappeared. It's like they just couldn't regain
and find that rhythm that they had and it just
went away. Sometimes that happens, and then it gets contagious
and guys start taking bad shots, they start to rush things,

(16:15):
they don't take care of the ball necessarily, and the
way that they had previously during the first half, the
ball was not moving the way it was during the
first half. And it's impossible for one player to solve that.
It's got to be multiple players to solve that. And
tonight Boston just didn't have the guys to make that happen.
So I guarantee you they're walking away from this game

(16:38):
kind of like, how did that happen? How did we
play that well in the first half and then it
just got away. Now they're gonna say, all right, let's
get back to what we were in the first half.
Let's do that when we get back on the floor
the next time. And that is, as I said, going
to be at TD Garden. The Celtics fly back home
they got a couple of days off. They will not

(16:59):
practice on Friday and Saturday. They'll be back on the
practice floor on Sunday, and then Monday they will host
the red hot Detroit Pistons, who are the number one
team in the Eastern Conference. The Celtics already beat them
on that floor once, Let's hope they can beat them again.
