The Boston Celtics have passed the New York Knicks in the standings and are now the No. 2 seed in the NBA’s Eastern Conference. Boston returned from a West Coast trip that just ended in Los Angeles and crushed the Chicago Bulls, 115-101. Anfernee Simons was the offensive engine, as he scored 27 points during the second half alone. We discuss his emergence as a dangerous weapon off of Boston’s bench, and why this was such an impressive win for the red-hot Celtics.

Speaker 1 (00:06):
Sound Off Themitchwarks on Anthony Simon's going off and the
Boston Celtics going up. That's right, Simons went off during
the second half and the Boston Celtics are now the
number two seed in the Eastern Conference. Thanks for tuning in.
This is the sound Off Postgame podcast presented by Exfinity Mobile.
And the first thing that I want to talk about

(00:28):
in this episode is the fact that this was a
really good win for the Boston Celtics. And I'm gonna
tell you why I feel that way. Number One, did
you know that the Chicago Bulls had won seven of
their last ten games. That's right. This team had been
playing some pretty darn good basketball and then they come

(00:50):
into Boston and the Boston Celtics hold them to thirty
three points during the first half. And it wasn't just
Chicago missing shots. The Celtics were affecting those shots and
playing really strong ball at both ends of the court. Now,
the Celtics were also missing shots. We'll get into that
in a few moments, but the fact that they were

(01:12):
generating missus at one end and generating quality shots at
the other end told me Celtics are going to be
just fine during this game, and that wound up being
the case. And again I just want to repeat this
Bulls team is not like a bottom feeder. This team
is hovering around five hundred right now and it had
won seven of its last ten games. So this was

(01:34):
a good win for the Celtics. That's number one about
who the Bulls are. The second reason why this is
a really good win for the Boston Celtics is because
they just came off, as we know, a season long
five game road trip that started in Indiana and wound
up all the way across the country in Los Angeles.

(01:55):
And I've said it before on all of our different platforms.
You're probably not this is gonna be the last time
that you hear this, but coaches around the league have
said four years that the hardest game of a long
road trip is the first game after that road trip,
and we saw some evidence of that tonight, right Like,

(02:16):
the Celtics didn't play well, they didn't look great, they
couldn't make shots, yet they found a way to win.
That says something to me about who these guys really are.
And it also shows me that the Celtics on a
bad night, are still that much better than a team

(02:40):
like the Bulls on their bad night says a lot.
They're separating factors here, So again, a really good win
for the Boston Celtics. I don't want us to kind
of glaze over this just Becoh, it's the Chicago Bulls.
People don't think it's a great team, but a team
has been playing good basketball of late. And the Celtics
not only just beat them, but beat them by fourteen

(03:03):
points after coming off that long road trip. That's impressive.
So let's not just overlook that. Another thing that we
got to talk about is just how weird this game was.
This was a weird basketball game. At halftime, I was
talking to some people. I'm like, man, people in the
stands tonight not exactly seeing the type of basketball that

(03:25):
they were hoping to see by either team. During the
first half, both teams shot less than thirty six percent
from the field, both of them. The Bulls were hovering
around thirty percent. It was crazy. Neither team could make
a shot. That was weird in and of itself. But
then you fast forward to the second half and then

(03:45):
it turns into a shootout. These teams are just trading
three pointers at both ends of the court. Both team
shot at least forty six percent during the second half.
So I'll repeat that, during the first half, neither team
shot better than thirty six percent, and during the second half,
both teams shot better than forty six percent. So just

(04:05):
a weird night, a weird game, but great to see
the Boston Celtics be able to figure out a way
to navigate that weirdness and come out with another win
in the win column to bump them up in the standings.
We opened by talking about Anthony Simons. We're going to
talk about him again right now because he was a
key driver in the Boston Celtics turning things around during

(04:28):
the second half at the offensive vent. He now, after
scoring twenty seven points during this game, with all of
those points coming during the second half, he now was
the second player in as many games for the Celtics
who scored at least twenty seven points during the second half.
Think about that Saturday night, As we all know, Jalen

(04:50):
Brown went off in LA against the Clippers scored thirty
points during the second half. Now tonight, during the second half,
Anthony Simons goes off for twenty seven points. So in
two consecutive games, the Celtics have so much offensive firepower
that they had two different players score at least twenty
seven during the second half. As said something again about

(05:14):
the firepower of this offense that just Saturday night put
together one of the top offensive performances in a game
that we have ever seen in the NBA. And again,
as we all know, they are one of the top
offenses in the NBA this season, and they have been
all season long, So a ton of firepower, and tonight
it's great to see what Anthony Simon's brought to the table,

(05:37):
not only in this game, but really he's starting to
find his rhythm. Over the last five games. I posted
this after the contest tonight, He's averaging about eighteen points
per game, shooting fifty one percent from three point range
in forty six percent from the field overall. So Anthony
Simon's a guy who've been renowned an offensive weapon in

(06:01):
the NBA for three or four years now, is now
starting to really find his groove here in Boston. Again
repeating the numbers seventeen point eight points per game over
his last five all of them being double digits. I
believe he scored at least thirteen and all five of
those games fifty one percent from three point range. That's

(06:23):
what we can come to expect from him, because this
guy is a when it comes from shooting from long range.
So Anthony Simon's another great performance. Really been fun to
watch him heat up on that road trip and now
continue that back here in Boston. Let's hope we continue
to see this for the rest of the season. Peyton
Pritchard was the other offensive engine for the Boston Celtics.

(06:46):
He scored twenty one points during this game. Early on
during the second half, he was the one who got
the Celtics into a little bit of a rhythm offensively
before Simon's checked in and really just took over the game.
So good to see Peyton prit Richard continuing to get
it done at the offensive end. He has been great
all season long. Last thing that I want to mention

(07:09):
about this game, and it kind of goes back to
the start and talking about why this was such a
good win for the Boston Celtics, but just you're coming
off a long road trip where you played in all
different time zones, you traveled up and down the West Coast,
you had one day off and that off day was
to fly back to Boston from LA and then you

(07:31):
come out tonight and you beat a team that's been
playing well. But what really stood out to me is
that even though the Boston Celtics weren't exactly playing well
in terms of shooting the basketball at the offensive end,
and that's what everyone looks at when they think, as
a team played well, did they shoot it well? Did
they score? For a team that didn't play all too well,

(07:54):
the effort, the continuous effort was there, and that says
a lot to me for a team that, as I said,
was coming off that long road trip, only had one
day off between games, and that day was used to
fly back to Boston. These guys got back at like
six or seven last night on the East Coast, probably

(08:14):
ate some food, crashed, went to bed, They didn't have
an off day, they had a travel day, and then
they come out tonight and again give that same type
of continuous, NonStop effort that we have seen from them
all season. That is a hallmark of this team. And
when you continue to see that on a night like tonight,

(08:36):
coming off a road trip like they were coming off of,
that tells you that this is here to stay. This
is who this team is at its core, and if
you ever see a game where they're not giving that effort,
you know that that is just, uh, that's like a
one out of fifty type performance out of these guys.

(08:58):
They bring it every single night. So seeing that consistency,
it just signals that what we're seeing from this team again,
which is now number two in the Eastern Conference standings,
this isn't a fluke. This is not a fluke. This
team has offense, this team has effort in Those are

(09:19):
the two things that have been consistent all season long,
and those are two things that I don't see them
going anywhere. So we saw it again tonight. We saw
both of those again tonight, particularly during the second half.
Great to see out of the Celtics continuing to deliver
in those two categories. We get a couple comments from
our fans. Our first one is coming in from Willy Do,

(09:41):
I think possibly a first time commenter here on our
SoundOff postgame podcast. Will he Do has a comment on
Anthony Simon's fitting into the culture here in Boston. And
then we've got Brian who chimes in on how it
feels right now to be a Celtics fan. So again,
first up will he do here we go. My son's

(10:01):
already in the car. Bye, I thank you one gash.

(10:21):
Cut your mobile bill in half and save sixty five
dollars a month for your first year with Expinity Mobile
Expinity imagine that, all right. Willie Duo's comment says Simon's
coming off the bench gave the Celtics a huge boost tonight.
Says he really likes the culture he's currently living in.

(10:44):
Keep him cultured, Joe, all right. One thing that I
want to concentrate on here is one of the first
words that was used in this comment from Willie Doo
Simon's coming off the bench. Gabeik's a big boost tonight.
I know you all know that, but a lot of
people are probably kind of overlooking anforty. Simons has been

(11:05):
not only a starter for the past few seasons, but
he has been the offensive guy for the Portland Trailblazer,
like the number one option for the Portland Trailblazers since
Damian Lillard left town and went to Milwaukee. Obviously, now
he's back not playing, but this is It was a
couple of seasons where he was the lead dog, and

(11:26):
before Lillard got traded, he was the number two in
that pecking order at the offensive end. This guy has
accepted his role here in Boston, moved to the bench
and somehow slowly found a way to become and be

(11:46):
that guy who was that lead dog in Portland, but
doing it coming off the bench for the Celtics. And
that's gotta be what Brad Stevens had in vision and
hoped for when he did acquire Anthony Simon this offseason
in exchange for Drew Holliday. And I already said the
numbers earlier, I'll say them again. Nearly eighteen points per

(12:08):
game on forty six percent shooting from the field, fifty
one percent shooting from beyond the arc over his last
five games. This is trending upward for Anthony Simons. He
has accepted the role. He's played well within that role.
But now he's starting to really excel within that role.
And that is a dangerous thing to think about for

(12:31):
opposition opposing teams around the NBA as the rest of
this season unfolds. We already know the Celtics are one
of the best offenses in the league when Anthonty Simons
was good. Think about what the Boston Celtics can be
if he's great like he was tonight and like he
has been for the past five games. Another part of

(12:54):
this comment is about Simons fitting in it and embracing
the culture here in Boston. Listen, he came on the
View from the Rafters podcast with myself and Abby Chin
earlier this season and we talked about that. We talked
about him coming to Boston and he was excited about
getting into this culture and being pushed and being taught

(13:16):
in learning more about the game, becoming a better defender,
becoming a better all around player. And there's no doubt
that he is a better all around player today than
he was on day one. Here in Boston. The Celtics
culture is kicking in. He has embraced it and he
is running with it. And it's been a whole lot

(13:37):
of fun to see him take those different stages here
in Boston through the first three ish months of this season.
So a great performance from him tonight again, coming off
the bench and scoring twenty seven points in a single half.
You don't see that very often in the NBA, maybe
a couple times a year. Anthony Simons just did it

(14:01):
for the Boston Celtics. All Right. Our final comment of
the night coming in from Brian who says, and for
three just going crazy in the fourth, Yes he did.
You know, for a team that anyone outside the Celtics
thought was a playing at best number two in the East,

(14:23):
must taste like crow to them. For US Celtics fans,
it's the greatest taste in the world. I love this team.
And Brian, I know you love this team because not
only are you watching every night, but you're replying every
night to our post game post asking for commentary on
the game. Appreciate you and glad that you love this

(14:46):
team so much. And that's what I want to concentrate
on here, is that this team that so many people
expect it maybe playing, maybe missing the playoffs altogether before
the season started, in terms of what ex expectations were,
this team has not only won a lot of games,

(15:06):
but it is just played in a way that you
can't help but to respect and love. And you can
see that in commentary around the NBA, Like if you
go and you dig around and you check out reporters
from all over the country, analysts from all over the country,
you're seeing them be like, like, man, that's Celtics team.

(15:27):
They play hard, they are hard nosed, They play together,
they care, they play efficiently. Like those are the hallmarks
of a team that you love, that you can fall
in love with, and that you can really enjoy watching
every single night. And that's exactly what we're doing right now. Hey,

(15:48):
a quick word from our partner, Exfinity Mobile. Celtics fans
want to keep your phone as fresh as your kicks.
With Exfinity Mobile, you can upgrade to a new device
every year, So send that old phone to the best
and stay ahead of the game. Exfinity. Imagine that. Back
to our love of this Boston Celtics team. Like, my
favorite part about it all is just that none of

(16:12):
us expected this. I don't even think the Celtics expected this.
I think the Celtics expected to be better than most
people thought. But did they really expect to be the
number two seed in the East on January sixth? No,
I don't think anyone could have expected that. And that's

(16:33):
what is just so lovable about these guys. They're not
just surpassing expectations, they're blowing expectations out of the water,
and they're doing it by being a team. They are
the epitome of a team like you said, did you
see Jalen Brown tonight after Anthony Simon's drill the three

(16:54):
and forced Billy Donovan and the Chicago Bulls to call
a time out? Like we leb Brown was loving it.
Jalen Brown, who had taken twice as many shots as
points had scored. He was having a rough game and
he loved the fact that Anthony Simon's was cooking. You
see this every night. These guys love each other. They

(17:18):
pull for each other, they root for each other, they
play as a team, they play together, they care about
each other. It's so much fun to watch, and it's
so much fun to watch that type of team environment,
not just be a team environment that's like, yeah, that's
a group that I can like. Not only that, but

(17:38):
like they're winning and they're winning all the time. It's
been an awesome year to be a Boston Celtics player, coach,
staff member, certainly fan. And let's just hope that continues
here moving forward. And the Boston Celtics are in the
middle of a nice little home stand here Monday, Wednesday, Friday, Saturday,

(18:03):
a lot of games coming up here at TD Garden,
the next one coming Wednesday night against the Denver Nuggets
and as we know, Nikola Jokic will not be playing
in that game. Glad that he's okay. Hopefully he's back
sooner rather than later, but he will not be playing.
Wednesday night, before that game, we are going to have
a pregame live show, a pre stream coming at you

(18:25):
ninety minutes before tip off. Hope you enjoy it. We'll
send out all the information on Wednesday before the game,
but until then, soak this win up. Enjoy it again.
It was a very good win. And make sure you
tune in to our pregame show on Wednesday and also
reply to my post after the game Wednesday night. I

(18:46):
want to hear what you're all thinking. Thanks for giving
us a watch on YouTube or a listen on your
favorite podcast platform, and we'll see you Wednesday night. Thanks
