Speaker 1 (00:06):
Sounds on Wednesday Night, not quite going as expected for
the Boston Celtics who fell at TV Garden to the
Nicola Jokic lists Denver Nuggets.
Speaker 2 (00:18):
This is the Sound Out postgame podcast presented by Xfinity Mobile.
Thanks for giving us a watch on YouTube or giving
us a listen on your favorite podcast platform and right
this game, a lot of people expected the Boston Celtics
to come out on top and there are multiple reasons
for that. First and foremost, the Boston Celtics have been
the best team in the NBA when it comes to record,
(00:41):
when it comes to net rating for almost two months
now heading into this game. That's reason number one. Reason
number two is that Nicola Jokic, the star, multi time
MVP in the NBA perennial MVP candidate, is out for
the Denver Nuggets, and so many many people thought that
the Nuggets wouldn't be able to keep up with this
(01:04):
Boston Celtics train that has been rolling and rolling for
a couple of months now. But this is just another
example of in the NBA, every team has talent and
that Denver Nuggets team is still really, really good and
we will touch on that in just a few moments.
But a few things that stood out on the Boston
(01:25):
Celtics side in this loss. First and foremost, they look
totally different during the second half than they did during
the first half, particularly offensively. Offensively, during the first half,
the team shoots fifty one percent from the field, forty
five percent from three point range, and scores fifty eight
points with only a couple of turnovers. That being a
(01:47):
key fast forward to the second half. By the way,
the game was tied up at fifty eight to fifty
eight at halftime, you felt pretty good about where the
Boston Celtics were. Denver's finishing up a four thousand mile
road trip. This was it. You assumed that the Boston
Celtics would have more in the tank, but they didn't
(02:08):
in the second half. The Boston Celtics, after that fifty
one percent forty five percent three shooting in the first
half performance, they come out during the second half and
shoot just forty percent from the field as a team,
actually sub forty if you want to go into the
decimal points and thirty three percent from three point range.
Scored fifty two points, but they needed a lot of
(02:30):
shots to get there. And oh, by the way, those
turnovers that we talked about that were so tight during
the first half and generally speaking, have been great throughout
the season. One of the biggest reasons why the Boston
Celtics have been one of the best teams in the
NBA eleven turnovers during the second half alone. You're not
gonna win many games when you cough the ball up
(02:50):
that many times, especially when you're playing against a really
good team. But this is not quite what I expected
out of the Celtics, I said during the pre game
show right here in the studio with Brian Scalabrini. Before
this game, I thought this was gonna be the game
where the Boston Celtics got back to looking like themselves
at both ends of the court for a full game. Now,
(03:12):
they had a successful trip that started out in Indiana
then went out West. They went four and one on
that trip. They could have easily gone five to zero,
but for the most part on that trip they were
winning games while not really playing well. I thought they
did the exact same thing Monday night in the first
game back from that road trip when they played host
to the Chicago Bulls. I don't think the Celtics played great.
(03:35):
Joe Mizula even a minute. They didn't look great, but
they played well enough to win. They played hard enough
to win tonight. I thought, Okay, you've been back since
Sunday from that road trip. You've had a few days,
get your legs back underneath you, get back home, some
home cooked meals, be around your family and friends, get
(03:55):
a little bit of rest. No practice yesterday, no shoot
around this morning. I thought that they were going to
be nice and juiced up for this game. That did
not happen. The Denver Nuggets, believe it or not, who
again are closing out a four thousand mile road trip.
They played excellent from start to finish, and we'll dive
into that in a moment. A couple more things that
(04:16):
we want to point out on the Celtics side, or
just three performances that were really exactly what you would
hope for and maybe even surpassing that from members of
the Boston Celtics. First and foremost, namash Keida a career
high twenty rebounds tonight, ten of them at the offensive end,
ten of them at the defensive end, and as our
(04:36):
Taylor Snow posted on our Celtics Stats platform after the game,
that's the most rebounds twenty that a Boston Celtics player
has grabbed since two thy fifteen when Jared Sollinger grabbed
twenty plus boards, so this had not been done in
over a decade. It was fun to watch him out there,
really attacking the glass, being relentless at both ends of
(04:59):
the course. Some of those offensive rebounds were coming off
of his own misses, but he was in traffic getting
hacked on the arm, missing shots, but still chasing the
boards and grabbing those rebounds. So nice performance, friend to
Measkeida setting not only a career high, but also a
Boston Celtics high watermark for the last decade plus. Additionally,
Luca Garza another really strong game from him. He just
(05:22):
continues to give the Celtics great minutes off the bench tonight.
He finishes this game with eleven points and five rebounds.
Made another three pointer. He's shooting better than forty percent
from three point range this season, might even be pushing
fifty percent at this point, but did not miss a
shot from the field. Five to five from the floor again,
eleven points, five rebounds. He was a plus eight. Only
(05:44):
played nineteen plus minutes. Thought the game got away from
the Celtics a little bit during the second half and
they had to shoot their way back in so he
didn't get a ton of playing time, but he just
continues to play at a high level for the Celtics
every single night. I think we might do a little
England out and showing some of his tape this week
on Friday in this week's edition of Celtics Weekly, so
(06:07):
tune in for that. And then our last person that
we got to highlight is Anthony Simons who continues to cook.
Another double digit performance off the bench. Scored fifteen points
three to four from distance, six of nine from the field,
So another strong performance from Anthony Simons who continues to
play well. This is about six straight games now where
he's averaging about seventeen eighteen points off the bench. He's
(06:30):
really given the Celtics three eight minutes. He actually made
two three pointers to close out the first half and
tie this game up for the Celtics heading into the break.
So he's been great for the Celtics. Did it out
West has continued it coming back here in Boston. Twenty
seven points during the second half alone on Monday, and
then tonight scores fifteen off the bench on six of
nine shooting. Now let's translate ourselves into the conversation about
(06:54):
the Denver Nuggets. I just got to say that there
are some nights in the NBA where you watch a
team and you can just tell that team has been
very well coached and they are listening to their coach.
Tonight was one of those moments for me watching this
Denver Nuggets team. They just look so polished, like such
a team. They share the ball, they make great reads.
(07:17):
It was beautiful basketball to watch. You hate to see
it on the other side of the ball from the
Boston Celtics, but they really just looked like a unit
out there. And that's really impressive to say after this
team just lost maybe the best player in the world
about a week or two ago in Nicola Jokics. They're
still trying to figure that out. Well, it sure looked
like they figured it out tonight. That team is very
(07:40):
well coach. You got to give credit to coach Adaman
out there with the Denver Nuggets. He is still finding
a way to have that team be Really they're three
and two since Jokic went out with a win a
couple nights ago against Philadelphia, and then tonight against the
Boston Celtics, two of the better teams in the Eastern Conference.
So props to the Nuggets. They look great tonight and
that is a very well coached team. Peyton Watson goes
(08:02):
off for what was it, thirty points, Yes, thirty points,
just could not miss. He was six to seven from
long distance, made four free throws to go along with it,
ten to fifteen overall from the field. Peyton Watson was
the guy tonight for the Denver Nuggets. Gave them exactly
what they needed. And then a lot of those shots
were coming off of passes from Jamal Murray, who was
(08:24):
just masterful as a point guard during this game. He
got to give him credit as well. Finishes with twenty
two points, but more importantly, seventeen assists. Now why is
that so important? Yes, it's a big number, but let
me give you some context around that number. Seventeen assists
for Jamal Murray alone. The Boston Celtics had sixteen assists
(08:46):
as a team. So Jamal Murray all by himself racked
up more assists during this game than the entire Boston
Celtics team dished out. That is a very impressied defeat.
So all The credit goes out to Jamal Murray, to
Peyton Watson, to this entire Nuggets team. They played great
(09:07):
tonight and it really says a lot about a team
when you can do that at the end of a
four thousand mile road trip. Credit to them. All right,
let's dive into a couple comments from our fans. First up,
we've got Jay Stu on another comment on Peyton Watson's
incredible performance for the Nuggets. And then we've got Buck
Nast seven y. I think that's supposed to be Buck
(09:29):
Nasty who has a question about the red hot Anthony Simons.
Let's dive into now. First one up, Jay Stu, you're
on the clock.
Speaker 1 (09:39):
That's what I got.
Speaker 2 (09:41):
I think here one.
Speaker 1 (09:46):
Cut your mobile bill in half and save sixty five
dollars a month for your first year with Expinity Mobile.
Speaker 2 (09:56):
All right, Jay Stu says, Peyton Watson best this game ever.
Of course, Yeah, this seems to happen sometimes to the
Boston Celtics. But if if you're a fan of the Celtics,
I just gotta tell you, take a deep breath. This
happens to every team in the league. Okay, every team
in the league has games throughout the season where an
(10:18):
opposing player who you don't expect to go off does
go off. Sometimes that leads to losses. Sometimes your team
can still pull out the win. Tonight, it just happened
to be one of those situations where the Celtics were
not able to overcome what Peyton Watson brought to the table.
But yes, he was unbelievable score thirty points during this
(10:38):
game on only fifteen shots. I believe he made at
least his first five to three pointers, might have made
his first six, I can't remember, but he wound up
shooting six of seven from long distance. Those thirty points,
by the way, are only too shy of his career high,
So this was on many levels a career best performance
(10:59):
or right there on it. Ten to fifteen from the field,
six of seven from three point range. Also added in
six rebounds to assists, a couple of blocks, a steal
like he was great at both ends of the court.
The Boston Celtics were feeling his presence throughout the forty
eight minutes of this game, and he played by far
the majority of it thirty seven minutes. That's more than
(11:22):
any member of the Boston Celtics played in this game. So,
as we talked about in the opening segment, you gotta
give credit where credit is due. Peyton Watson was amazing tonight. Okay,
it was a thing to watch. He was making everything
from the corners, from the wings, from straight away driving
to the basket, blocking shots at the rim like he
(11:43):
was awesome. And I just want to remind you sometimes
that happens. It happens if you play enough games, which
the Boston Celtics and every other team do eighty two
of them every regular season, you're bound to have nights
we're in opposing player who you don't expect to go
off does go off tonight. That just happened to be
(12:06):
Peyton Watson. All right. Second and final comment of the
night coming in from Buck Nasseven, Why who says, why
wasn't Simon's on the court when we couldn't get a score?
Walsh and Baylor on instead? Question Mark? All Right, I
just want to say, I feel like you're getting caught
(12:28):
up in the moment just a little bit here, all right,
And I'm not just trying to make everyone drink the
Celtics juice here, but I do think that you might
be overreacting just a touch here. The Celtics struggled offensively
throughout the second half, and we can go through the
numbers here right now. During the third quarter, shot only
forty five percent from the field, scored twenty four points. Okay,
(12:50):
twenty four points is not a big number for the
Boston Celtics offensively. During the fourth quarter, they shot only
thirty four percent from the field and scored twenty eight
points because they took bunch of shots and they also
made some free throws during that quarter. But the Celtics
were not good offensively basically for the whole second half.
And speaking specifically about those two players that we just mentioned,
(13:13):
they didn't play many minutes. I mean during the fourth quarter.
Baylor Shireman played one minute. He played seventy two seconds
during the fourth quarter. Okay, Jordan Walsh played five minutes.
Anthony Simons played almost seven minutes of the fourth quarter.
(13:33):
So if you just look at the numbers, like Simon's
was out there for almost seven of the twelve minutes,
Shireman was only out there for one minute, Walsh was
only out there for five minutes. So I'm sorry, I
gotta disagree here. I don't think Joe Mizula was just
not playing his guys or playing not playing the right guys.
(13:56):
I think he did play the right guys. And if
you really look at it, most of his starters played
normal minutes during the fourth quarter and during the second half.
In total. I mean Jalen Brown played fifteen and a
half minutes during the second half, Sam Houser seventeen and
a half, Peyton Pritchards sixteen and a half, Derek White
almost nineteen. Like, these guys played their normal minutes during
(14:17):
the second half, and you got to get some of
them rest, right, And I think you might be talking
about early moments of the fourth quarter or late moments
of the fourth quarter, But listen, the whole Celtics team
just did not have it offensively during the second half,
and in particular during that fourth quarter. This game, the
final score is much closer than it really was. Denver
(14:37):
really pulled away there down the stretch, and the Celtics
just didn't have the offensive firepower to get back into it.
So that's a rap. On Wednesday night, the Boston Celtics
drop a game to the Nikola Jokic less Denver Nuggets,
and now it's going to be on the Celtics to
get back into the win column as they head into
(14:57):
a very difficult home back to back on Friday and Saturday. First,
they will be taking on the Toronto Raptors Friday night
here at TV Garden. Toronto Raptors team that I believe
is twenty and fifteen here on the season. They've been solid,
very solid this season. And then on Saturday Night, the
Alien Victor Wembanyama and his red hot up and coming
(15:20):
San Antonio Spurs also come to TED Garden for a
Saturday night showdown. So two great games coming up this weekend.
Make sure you tune in to or check in to
my account on X after the final buzzer of both
of those games, I'll be sending out a post asking
for your opinions and takeaways from those games. Reply, send
in your thoughts. I'll take a couple of them in
(15:42):
these two episodes of sound Off with the Boston Celtics
coming up this weekend. All right, enjoy your Thursday and
we'll see you Friday night from right here inside the
GED Garden studios.
