(00:33):
Well, the weekend, it isWelcome aboard at Home with Gary Sullivan.
That starts brought to you by RotoRuter. And if a heavy spring rainfall
makes you nervous because the risk ofa basement flood, well you need to
call my friends at Roto Ruter. They do plumbing and water clean up and
boy the way the storms we have. They can help you with some problem

(00:55):
problem or a battery backup installed. And if you don't listen and you have
a flood, well they got youcovered there too. It's Rotrouter dot Com.
Again, it's Rotorouter dot Com.All right, your calls next as
we continue through the weekend, it'seight hundred eight two three eight two five
five at the bottom of the iron. Instead of a guest, you are

(01:15):
the guests. I want to hearpest stories, ant stories, cockroach stories,
if you participate. I have afew packages of some rescue traps.
Okay, so I just want tohear some maybe how you got rid of
them, how bad it was,and uh we'll kind of chat and uh,

(01:41):
I'll randomly pick a couple of peoplefor a for a price package from
from rescue. They got ant baitsand spider traps and fly traps and yellowjacket
traps and wash traps and carpenter beestraps. That's what we talked about last
week, and we'll do that atthe bottom of the are fair enough,
all right, let's get the barbar. Welcome, Hi Garry, thanks

(02:06):
for taking my call. You bet, I'm doing a flagstone putting in a
flagstone walkway and I wanted to knowwhat you would recommend to fill in the
space around the stones. Around thestones. Yeah, so they're not going
to be real close together the flagstonesthemselves. There's sea gravel or well,

(02:32):
yeah, pea gravel or a rockof some sort. And then I'm another
thing you might even consider, Andit depends how much shade you have and
the nature part of it. Butyou know that pea gravel and stuff that
shifts, and you might even wantto use like a polymeric sand in with

(02:53):
that, which kind of just stiffensthings up a little bit. Still sand,
but it doesn't track like regular sand. And I've also seen people install
I don't know, maybe you've seenit where you have flagstone walkway and you
have like some gravel in between, you know, little sides. Like you
said, pea gravel or something alongthose lines, or even a crushed line

(03:15):
gravel where it kind of hardens upa little bit, but also grow moss
in between those stones through the peagravel. Okay, and it's kind of
you know, if it's shady,it works for well Okay, yeah,
this is im full sun. Yeah, colementric sands is good, Paul,

(03:37):
Americ sand would probably be a goodanswer for you. Yeah, and would
you recommend a gravel bonder When yousay gravel bonder to bond and gravel together,
yeah, someone told me that thatsometimes helps to make it really familiar

(03:57):
with that, I know, likeyou could get I think it's B nineteen.
I don't know. There's all thesesizing and everything of gravel with limestone.
Then put a limestone dust in there, which bonds the limestone together.
Okay, so the polymeric sand, you can just google that and read that.
But I think that might be anoption. I think a lot of
it's going to depend on the typeof gravel, So the pea gravel and

(04:23):
the polymeric sand. It may betoo rounded to stay intact with that sand.
That's why I mentioned the I thinkit's B nineteen. Forgive me if
I'm wrong, but it's a littlebit more like a chip gravel a little
bigger, and then the limestone dustA lot parking lots are actually made of

(04:43):
that if it's a gravel parking lot. But you could call a stone dealer
too and get their recommendation for thatrather than just buying a bag of it.
Okay. So P nineteen gravel withlimestone, with a limestone powder with
it. Yes, yeah, okay, great, And I love the rescue

(05:04):
trap. I'll there my story. We had terrible problems with chipmunks when we
lived in Cincinnati. We're down inCharlotte, North Carolina. Now, gosh,
that's where I am right now,are you kidding? Yeah, I'm
in my daughter's house. Okay.We had terrible trouble with chipmunks. I
tried everything, you know. Itried the buckets, and I finally found

(05:28):
a device called I think it's calledthe exterminator, okay, and you can
order it off ace hardware you usedto be able to. Where do you
hook it up to the exhaust pipeof your car? Oh boy, and
you hook the host the host crewson it and you just put it down
the holes. And that's what finallysold my problem. That's excellent, Barbe.

(05:51):
Why don't you just sit on thehold here. I want to have
Danny get a couple of things fromyou. Okay, all right, sit
tight, Danny. You know thedrill. That's a good way. We
get a lot of chipmunk calls. But every time we do and we are
exterminating them. I won't get intomy way because I always getting asty emails

(06:11):
about that. But you know, chipmunks as a whole can do a whole
lot of damage. I would saya lot of folks with stoops porches,
chipmunks burrow underneath those and there'll bea gap, and that whole porch will
just settle, and it always settlestowards the house, yep. And then

(06:34):
as that water hits that stoop,it just funnels right down underneath It's it's
not good. You got to getthem out of there for sure, all
right, Paul, Welcome, Goodmorning Gary. I have a couple of
questions about some stains in my bathtubthat I hope you can help me with.
All right, So, when takinga shower, wear shower shoes which

(06:57):
have like black sols. I'm assumingthey're rubbers something like that. Okay,
and they're leaving stains on the bottomof the bathtub which I can't get out.
Are they scuted like a rubber ora soul would create a scuff on
a white baseboard or something like that. Well, it seems to have gone
across, you know, the areathat I'd be walking around, you know,

(07:18):
moving around in the shower, Soit's kind of on a whole area.
It's not like just cuff marks. But I've you know, tried various
products and lightly textured the bottom ofthe bathtub. Yeah, is it a
fiberglass tub? It's not metal,but I don't know what material it's made
out of. It some kind ofplastic or fiberglass. Yeah, I got

(07:41):
a product in mine, but Icould also tell you what the problem is
if it is fiberglass. So,you know a lot of times we have
you know, tubs and you know, we'll have ceramic tile for shower floors,
and tubs will have that porcelain coating. But fiberglass is a different beast.
So it's five glass woven together andmolded, and then a clear coat

(08:05):
or a finish is put over that. And when that clear coat and finish
begins to fail, dirt, rubberwhatever can cling to those fibers in between
those little fibers, and it's evenif it's just soap residue and dirt,

(08:26):
it's it's a bear to get ridof. Okay, So I'm guessing that's
what the issue is. Okay, that it's a fiberglass base that clearcoat's worn
and those shoes. Whether it's youknow, just the rubber that's being scuffed
onto that fiber in falling in thosecrevices, which it could be, or

(08:50):
just you know, residue from thesoap. So that very well maybe what
it is, because that's a really, really difficult to clean. Now I
said I had a product, andthis product continues still amaze me. It
was just released last July. It'sfrom Jaws that I talk about all the

(09:11):
time, but I have used thisin the last week on some of the
craziest things in the world and italways comes through. It's called the Cream
Cleanser. So you just go tothe website. You can't get it in
stores. It's all internet based. It's Jaws cleans dot com and look for

(09:31):
their cream cleanser. Stuff is awesome. You know, it's for bathtubs.
It's for toilets. I've used iton a cook top range cook top.
I've just got a car, andI've used it on the vinyl interior with
scuff marks on that. I've usedit on golf shoes. I've used it
on all kinds of things. Ithas never failed me, and I'd certainly

(09:54):
try it on that. Okay, great, and then maybe it can also
help with the other stains I'm having, and that is mildew stains, you
know, from like the curtain.I sometimes I'm a little bit lax I'm
cleaning that, and the mildewed transfersto the fiberglass too, probably the same
issue. Yep, yeap, yep. And here's a maintenance product to keep

(10:16):
all of that from happening after youclean it, so you're gonna have to
clean it first, and the cream'scleanser's perfect. You've also heard me talk
about the Wet and Forget products. They make a Wet and Forget shower.
It is strictly a maintenance product,So you spray that on your shower or
your tub or your shower walls oncea week and there's no scrubbing. You

(10:41):
just spray it on and rinse itoff. The next morning. Mold,
mildew, soap, scum, dirt, that's what that takes care of.
I'd use the cream cleanser on both, and then I'd get some shower wit

(11:01):
and forget and spray it on thereonce a week and hopefully won't show up
again. Okay, great. Onelast question is the faucet spout in the
bathtub. Should I have like calkor something around that to prevent water from
going good idea? A good idea. So a lot of times when we'll
see leaks that get behind walls, and you know, we always talk about

(11:24):
clocking the bathtub where it meets thetile, but especially in a shower area,
when you're taking a shower, thatwater's hitting you and it's hitting the
front wall, around the excussion platesof the hot and cold water handles around
the spout, those are those shouldbe calked, and rarely are they and
rarely are they calked properly. Alittle bead to just seal water from seeping

(11:48):
back there would be advantageous. Thanksmuch for the call. I appreciated a
quick break, and then back tothe phone. You're at home with Gary
Sullivan. If you don't have alist of things to do around the house.

during the week. All right, that's on the iHeart app or wherever podcasts
are. At Home with Gary Salvan, Jim, Welcome, Hi, How

(15:33):
are you today? Yes, sir, fine, thank you good. I
got a plumbing question. All right, we're gonna be out of the house
for a week. Turn the doI turn my water off in my house?
And do I leave the Fassett's spickettsoff? Yeah, well you don't

(15:54):
have to, but it's certainly anice preventive. I mean, if there
were a problem with a pin wholeleak and something breaks in the plumbing system,
obviously it's a disaster. By turningthe water off and draining the water
out of the pipes, you justeliminate that risk. So yes, what
you would do is you would shutoff the water coming into the house and

(16:17):
you would open up the highest faucet, so something up on the upper story
whatever that would be story one,two or three, open that up,
and then the lowest area of thehome you open up that faucet and that'll
drain all of the water out ofthe pipes and you're good to go.
When you come home. You turnthe water on. The faucet sputters and

(16:38):
spits and makes a lot of noise, and then when it starts running smoothly,
you go ahead and shut the faucetoff. How about your hot water,
I'd let that go. There's probablya setting on their If I was
going to be gone two or threemonths, I would put it on like

(16:59):
vacation, you know, so it'snot heating it all the time, but
heating it enough to keep the bacteriaout of the tank itself. But you
can shut it off. Don't don'tget me wrong. I'm just saying it
would be less of an issue. But you can shut it off if you
want. You can shut the poweroff to it, and you could drain

(17:21):
it, or you can just putit on vacation setting. All right,
very good, all right, thankyou, thank you very much. You're
quite welcome. Thanks, all right, and we'll get Scott. Scott,
welcome, good, good morning,Sorry from Southeasternsuri. How you doing doing
fine? Sarah got a question.I'm considering epoxy coating my garage floor.

(17:45):
They're doing some research and talking tofriends and stuff, and it seems like
that the epoxy coating from the bigbox store just don't don't have a long
life to seem like, right,I'm not four to seven years. Yeah,
I'm looking for something, a recommendationof something, maybe a commercial grade

(18:07):
or something, you know. AndI understand the prep is everything, prep
is everything, But there's so manygreat products. You see the pricing,
you see all the different beautiful garagefloors companies are installing, and you can
buy some products that are very similarthat or maybe they're even the same.
I don't know. I don't knowif you've heard me talk about roller rock

(18:32):
and spreadstone and Torazo. Those aremade by Dicee Coatings and it's a coating.
It's not a pain, but it'sapplied with a roller and so I
want you to visit the website. It's Daichcoatings dot com. Different colors,
different styles, different patterns. Theygot some great videos there that will walk

(18:56):
you through the whole project, Scott, and you're not going to have those
problems I know that you're going tohave with the epoxies. I'm totally with
you. It's a two coat system. And then it's also slip resistant,
which epoxies aren't. Uh, lifespanon them fifteen to twenty years prep is
theayt're looking for. Yeah, andthere's even another product is a sealer called

(19:21):
track Safe that can go over itand make it super slip resistant. So
it's dish Codings dot com. Takea look. I highly recommend it.
Good stuff. All right, yougot another question. I'll put you on
hold. When we come back, though, we're going to talk about your
nightmare pest stories. You got aquestion, Dallas up. You got a

back at it we go. We'rethirty three minutes after the top of the
are at Home with Gary Sullivan.By the way, have you ever had
an interesting battle with pest ants?I'd like to hear your story. Why
I have a price for you.Let's get back to Scott. He was
chatting and we had another question.Welcome. Yeah, hey, Gary,
my watch is a candle burner, and I have a phenomenon like in the

(22:57):
bathroom when you take a s andshut the door, run the fan.
Uh. You used to get alittle bit of moisture on the mirror and
stuff like that, But if youburn a candle, there's nothing when you
get out of the shower. Doyou know why that is? I'd have
no idea that. The only thingI can think of so as I'm thinking

(23:18):
this through, was the candle rightnext to the mirror on the vanity.
Yeah, yeah, okay, soit's a foot and a half away from
the marre soon Yeah, So theweird thing is about humidity, which causes
fogs on mirror. Of course,is cooler temperature, say seventy degrees in

(23:41):
a bathroom cannot hold the amount ofmoisture that's in the heat of the hot
water in the shower. Does thatmake sense? So the warmer the temperature,
so the bathroom warms up as theshower's going, right, and we
get that fog because it's hitting somethingthat is cold all right or cool that

(24:07):
mere seventy degrees That steam is sayeighty degrees or ninety degrees. And when
when that warmer air, it's automaticallylaned with more moisture because it can hold
more. When it hits something cooler, it creates condensation. So the only
thing that pops to my head couldthat candle. It's not making it hot,

(24:33):
but it would be warming that mirrorto a degree, right, which
it would allow the air to holdmore moisture before hitting the cold surface.
Right, Okay, yeah, thatmakes perfect sense. Yeah. I don't
know what that's right, but itmakes sense. One other quick recommendation that

(24:55):
you made years ago, I thinkuh garage doors about you is very well.
I've had a new uh eighteen footgarage door put up a couple of
years ago, a spray wax itabout every three months. Yeah, I
think looks like brand new and keepstays clean. It's just that's amazing,
amazing, Ki, Yeah, itis. It is amazing when you think

(25:15):
about it though. It's amazing tome how much dust accumulates on a vertical
garage door. Yeah. And ifyou if you wax it, the rain
just you know, it just movesthat dirt because the dirt hasn't accumulated thick
enough, and it keeps it clean. You're right, bird droppings and everything

(25:37):
else. It just comes right off. So you're ready, sir. Thank
you for very good Thank you.Take care all right again. Uh,
pest issues, pest nightmares. Iwant to hear from you. I might
have a little giveaway for you fromour friends at rescue when it comes to

(26:00):
traps for you know, spiders andflies and yellow jackets. So your your
pest nightmare, That's what I'm lookingfor. Uh, Rod welcome. Yeah,
Hi Gary, Hey, I gota problem. A relative O regularly
asked me to come over and checkher sink out kitchen sink. It's stainless.

(26:21):
It hadn't been drinking the handyman sheetyou found in the neighborhood. Did
the old draino all the over thecounter products with no success. Still pluggage
you started bumping up. I thinkhe eventually brought over sulfuric or hyder chloric
acid, something really mean, apretty brutal and that didn't work. I

(26:48):
eventually replaced the PBC, got outthe clog itself looked like ready mixed concrete.
I don't know what was in it, but I wonder. Okay,
after the acid to the stainless steelsink, it's streaked. Wherever it's the
inside of the stainless steel sink,it's black. It looks like it's someone
been was painting something black over topof it and the paint ran and wherever

(27:12):
it made contact on the inside ofthe saint, it's black streaking. Elbow
power and products I can find.I'm having no luck. We're moving this
is this perfectly burnt into the Saythat stainless steel is actually etched. Yes,
murratic acid will etch stainless steel.Because I used to always be nervous

(27:36):
about recommending putting ratic acid in toilets. But I know that sulfuric acid some
of those drain cleaners. I mean, quite honestly, you're really lucky didn't
burn yourself changing out the pipes underneaththat sink. Oh yeah, you know
it was about two foot section thatI'm telling you. I don't know what
can jeal to such a consistency.Just I guess mother nature and time,

(28:00):
and then I guess you know whatI had done. I had not done
this. I got the end result. I had someone putting some tile work
in a bathroom and they literally flusheddown the old grouding down the bath drain.
Okay, and guess what hardened theground. I'm there, you know,

(28:26):
with a slow running drain, nothaving any idea why it's slow running.
I got a power snake in thatthing and it's just spinning. Go
downstairs, cut the pipe and it'sliterally filled with concrete. Well you know,
so, Gary, I there's nohope. I just go ahead and
ethy enough to put it in thefirst time. I'm just you know,

(28:52):
I'm just guessing that's what happened.I mean, have you tried, like
you know, I could tell youto try that cream cleanser. I just
think gets etched into that concert orinto that stainless that product Gary, it's
just called cream cleanser, cream cleaner, and it's jaws jws dot com,

(29:15):
Jaws cleans dot com, Jaws cleansdot com. But you know, even
if you got any uh barkeeper's friendat home, that's an oxolic acid,
very low grade. It's great forstainless steel. It polishes stainless steel.
Okay, I'd try that. Ithink it's gonna laugh at you. Well,

(29:37):
I think you're right. Yeah,I tell you what wishes could make
it come true. I have noproblem. So yeah, all right,
man, thank you, take care, bye bye. All right, here's
our phone number. It's eight hundredeight two three A two five five talking
a little home improvement and let's go. Nancy, Nancy, welcome, Hey

(30:06):
Nancy. Oh, I'm sorry,I was outside checking out my my uh
last I think it's a wast Welast year we had we have a table
that sits outside on the patio andwe had the umbrella closed and when we

(30:26):
opened it up, a whole bloodof West came flying out. Oh my
god, there were there nesting insidethat umbrella. They were, they absolutely
were. So I'm curious to know, first of all, you know,
do they nest like anywhere and there'sa lot of different wasp hornets, yellow

(30:52):
jackets and and everything. You know, there's the you know, paper wasp
nests that you see asionally maybe upin the corner of a high ceiling in
a patio or something along those lines, or in a tree. You've seen
those big wass nests there. Idon't think they nest underneath umbrellas. They

(31:14):
might take refuge in there. Idon't know that for a fact, but
yeah, you definitely want to nothave them in an area where you're certainly
going to be sitting on the patioand enjoying a nice, beautiful day.
I was telling you about the Rescue. They have different wass trap sticks.

(31:36):
You've heard me talk about the carpenterbees trap sticks, and those things actually
attract them to the trap. Okay, and there's different kinds. If you
go to their website, it's rescuedot com, you can take a look
at the different traps. Sometimes they'lluse a fearmone where they're attracted to that.

(31:56):
Other times it's coloring yellow and greenpixels that they'll be attracted to.
Take a look at the website andyou might even station it relatively close to
where you had this problem. Inthe past. But you know that's usually,
you know, they're usually I wouldsay, not hiding there. I

(32:16):
don't know that. But how manywere there, Oh my goodness, I
couldn't even count them. I'm gonnajust like a flood of them. And
it startled me so greatly. Yeah, and this was last year. Yes,
so you haven't seen them this yearyet. We haven't put the umbrella

(32:36):
up. All right, I'll tellyou what I'm gonna do. Let me
put you on hold. Danny's gonnaget your name, and again, like
I said, Rescue they make allthe different pest traps. A lot of
times I talk about them. They'rea sponsor of this show, and they
gave me several packets to give away. And he'll take your name and different

(32:58):
things and we'll get you sample packagesof some of the pest traps from Rescue.
Fair enough, all right, let'stake a break. We'll come back
get some more questions answered. You'reat Home with Gary Sullivan. Help for

Bob welcome, Thank you. Ihave a pastory. I was running
a room in Omaha around nineteen seventyand I put an air conditioner in one

(36:14):
of the windows, and that nightI woke up with these little bugs.
They were filled. The room wasfilled with them and they were biting me.
So I turned on the light andI found that there was a gap
between the air conditioner and the window, so I plugged that up and then

(36:35):
I went out for a walk andwhen I came back, I found they
were all dead. What happened isthat they were attracted to the light in
the ceiling light which had a glasscover on it, and they were all
lying on the cover dead. Sothey were getting inside the light. Well,

(36:58):
the heat of the yeah, lightbulb must have killed them. Yeah,
yeah, that's exactly. And youknow those seems probably the glass dome
that would be attached to the lightfixture. There's you know, obviously it's
not air tight. Yeah, therewas a big space between the ceiling and

(37:20):
that glass cover. Oh oh,they were attracted to the light and that
killed them and they were all justlying on the glass cover. Wow.
When you were telling me they startedbiting me, I thought you were going
to give me a horrible bedbugs story, which I don't even need to hear
them, because then I start scratchingright away. All right, well,

(37:43):
thank you much for the call.Let me put you on hold. Danny'll
get your address and we'll get yousome rescue traps out to you. And
just in case you ever run intothat again. All right, if you're
on hold, sit tight, we'llget to you. If you're calling in
with a pest story, We've gotplenty, so I don't need any more
of those. We'll do it againtomorrow. Let's go to Let's go to

(38:07):
Bob. Bob welcome, yes,Bob, Yes, far away, I'm
here. Yeah, yeah, Ihave a Bradford White hot water tank and
you know, I run the waterupstairs and then pretty soon it sounds like

(38:28):
there's somebody in there trying to beattheir way out hot water tank. Is
there something drastically wrong with the tankor what? How old is it?
It's about I had it installed aboutfour years ago. Two things that I'll
make a water tank rumble, andthat's what it sounds like. There's a

(38:51):
bunch of rocks in there, doesn'tit. Yeah to bang, you know,
yeah, yeah, there's a coupleof things. If has the temperature
setting changed it all? You meanoutsider? No in the tank cause anybody
changed the water temperature. Okay,I sometimes set if they're too hot.

(39:12):
Sometimes they'll do that. It wouldseem odd that it would, uh you
know, not be too hot andthen all of a sudden it is too
hot. So my guess is whatit is is it's a there's a lot
of calcium carbonate or hard water depositsin that tank. When I said a

(39:34):
bunch of rocks, that's literally whatthe hard water deposits are. And when
it heats up, it'll rumble,is the words they it's just a banging
noise. Well, I don't knowwhat would cause the water heater to bang.
Yeah, it don't rumble. Imean I called the plumber, but

(39:54):
he don't. The guy that putit in, he don't call back or
nothing. So that a good dealthere. I just wondered, Well,
most water heaters will last. Mostwater heaters will last ten to fifteen years,
so most water heaters are going tobe warranted maybe five years. So

(40:17):
it would probably fall under a warrantyif there is something wrong with the tank.
But as you described when I said, it sounds like there's rocks in
there, and you said, yes, that well, I mean, you
know, it makes a noise, you know, I mean it's not like
a gurgling of rocks rolling, yeah, anything, it's just like bang bang,

(40:37):
you know. Well, it couldbe the water pressure going into the
house. Those change periodically. Ifyou wanted to test something yourself, you
could get a pressure tester and seewhat the water pressure in your house is.
You would screw this device on anoutdoor faucet. Your water pressure in

(40:59):
your house, if it's copper pipe, should be below eighty And that that
tank on the top of the waterheater, do you have a like it
looks like a propane tank on thetop of the water heater. Oh,
I got a gas hot water tank. Yeah, I understand that. But
at the top there should be awhite five gallon tank. It's in case

(41:22):
the pressure gets too high that watercan go in there, kind of like
a spill off on a radiator ona car. Yeah, no, there's
nothing like that. Okay, Well, without having that, that could gas
hot water heat. There's cold watercoming in, hot water going out.
I understand lines plus the gas line, okay, but by code there should

(41:44):
be an expansion tank on top ofthat water heater. If the pressure gets
too high, that extra water asit expands can go in that tank.
You don't have one of those. That's why. It could be a water
pressure relief valve on the side ofthey that may pop open. It may
not have you tested that, okay, so you could flip it, just

(42:09):
open it. See if it closesby itself right away. Could be a
bad valve, It could be apressure for the whole house. It could
be if you had an expansion tank. It could be a water logged expansion
tank. You don't have one.So I mean, if you're asking for
my opinion, I would test mywater pressure to my house, and I

(42:35):
would also get in contact with, you know, the manufacturer of that tank
and see look up if you stillhave the manual, see what the warranty
is on that, and if it'sunder warranty, they'll have a list of
certified plumbers that are going to comeout and see if that falls under the
claim of a warranty or at leastmaybe be able to dig a little deeper

(42:59):
and see what's going on. Butby code, you know there should be
an expansion tank on top of thatwater heater and certainly could cause noise if
they're in Oh all right, wellthen I'll have to check that out.
I think it's still under warranty. It's only like four or five years old.
Well, like I said, mostof them are five years. Some

(43:20):
of them go as high as ten. They're pro rated. But yeah,
I would definitely check that out.All right, all right, thank you
much for the call. Appreciate it. Bye bye. All right, our
phone number if you'd like to geton board, eight hundred and eight two

(43:42):
