(00:05):
Well, the weekend is upon us. Welcome at Home with Gary Salvin,
marching through another weekend, talking alittle home improvement and happy to take your
calls about your project or maybe aproblem you have around the home, maybe
some bugs, some insects, maybeyou're doing a little painting. Our numbers
eight hundred eighty two three eight twofive five and uh, well, let's

(00:28):
kick this hour off with Bonnie.Bonnie, welcome. Hi. I'm kind
of problem. My neighbor has bedbugsreal bad and what can you do to
try and keep them from getting invadedby him? Well, if they're you
have an apartment or a condo whereit's right next door, yeah, they're

(00:54):
Well, there are some things youcan do, but you know, it's
it's a it's a struggle. Arethey doing anything with them at their unity?
They the building does do a spray, but it doesn't seem to really
get rid of them. That's becausethey're very, very difficult to get rid

(01:14):
of and they got to really beI mean, it's got to really be.
You got to stay on top ofit. In other words, there's
different things like eucalypses oil. Theydon't bedbugs don't like the smell of that
mineral spirits if you go ahead.I'm sorry, wonderful. I love that
smell. Yeah, so you know, I would put it down sprayed along

(01:38):
the base boards. There's no guaranteeit'll help. Also, i'd really be
vacuuming underneath the base boards of theadjoining walls. For absolute sure, I
would be doing that. Bedbugs liketo hang around near the right and you

(02:00):
know in the middle of the nightthat they're gonna, you know, pull
blood out of you. That's what'sgonna feed. And they don't have to
feed for six months and they canhide inside walls, So I mean it's
it's a struggle to get rid ofthem, even to buy a do it
yourself, you know, rather thana pest control company, but eucalypt up

(02:21):
soil, I'd try that. I'dvacuum, you know, around the baseboards
daily. I would really keep inspectingaround my bed, you know, in
the little binder along the mattress andthings like that. And if you see
them, vacuum, vacuum, vacuum, clothing drapes, wash, wash,

(02:43):
wash, And that's not everything inthe house, but like the clothing in
the dresser that's right next to thebed, if you start seeing them,
you know, take a you know, pretty proactive approach of getting rid of
them immediately. So you know, again these are simple and you know,
it doesn't really contain chemicals, butit would be something I think I would

(03:07):
I would attack them that way andsee if we can control them. But
the eucalyptus oil works real well.If you do wash clothing very hot water,
hotter the better, you know. And there's also insecticides that are a
dust that maybe after vacuuming along thatbaseboard, sweeping that powder underneath the baseboards

(03:34):
will help control bedbugs. Okay,I know somebody I know in the building
is used as Hotshot brand, butshe said it didn't really it wasn't that
effective. Yeah, well, Idon't know. It's aren't like any other
bug in a lot of respects.Okay, you know, even some bugs

(03:57):
will just go away on their own. Bedbugs aren't going to and you are
the food source, and they hide. They're excellent and they're survivors. I
mean, they cannot eat for sixmonths. I mean, so it takes
something like if you hit a pestcontrol company and to get rid of bed
bugs. They might be at yourhouse every two weeks for three months.

(04:21):
I mean, they're difficult to getrid of. So somebody's gonna use or
try to eliminate the bed bugs bugby bug, You're not gonna do it,
because you know, the whole bunchof them might be inside the wall,
hibernating in an insulation and not eating. All of a sudden, six

(04:44):
months later they come out. Youlike, well, man, that spray
didn't even work. Well, guesswhat, that spray never got to them.
They ain't get that memo. Soto my honest opinion on bed bugs
is the only effective way you'll getrid of them is engaged with a pest
control company that's going to just notcome once every six months and spray for

(05:06):
bugs. And it's really hard onceit starts in a in properties like apartments
or condos, because it's all reallykind of one building. Yeah, And
if you're working your tail off tryingto get rid of them with a pest
control company and the other person isn't, well, that's a problem. So

(05:30):
i'd maybe go to, you know, a contact person and see if we
can work on everybody's living quarters. And that's about the only way you're really
going to get rid of them.Right, Well, they do it four
times a year to try and keepon top of this. But okay,
I just want to if they arein the uh maybe in the heat ducks

(05:53):
or something transporting from one apartment toanother. Possibility they can get anywhere,
but they're so I'd say, youknow, they're just along the joining wall.
They can get underneath the baseboard. That can get inside where an electrical
outlet is, go inside the wall, come out on the other side too
with little to no problems. Okay, but but I was thinking, Okay,

(06:17):
you can lip this oil. Wherewould you get something like that,
Well, you can get that atsome of your vitamin stores, your GMCs
and things like that. So anyeucalypsus oil, that's a natural insecticide.
So there is certainly that is certainlya repellent that can be used to kill
bedbugs and also prevent them. Theeucalypses it just it does a It's just

(06:47):
a natural insecticide, I guess isthe best way so you could get that.
It comes all different ways. Youcan oil down at the base of
the floor. I think, ifI'm not mistaken, there's eucalypses oil sent
candles, so that might be somethingyou can use also, sure, well,
I'm just thinking that would be saferto put Mike you sing around the

(07:09):
electric or on the heat ducks orsomething. Yeah, right, right,
you know, I think peppermint oilis another one. They don't really care
for a lot of insects don't likethat. Yeah, that's good for a
couple of different things. Okay, well, I really appreciate it. He
does his best. But like yousay, if they can go six months

(07:30):
in hibernate, yep, again, they're tough to get rid of. Bonnie.
I'll tell you what Rescue they maketraps for pest and I'm I mean
they make spider traps, fly traps, lot traps, ant baits and different
things. They've given me a coupleof packages of different traps a little price

(07:56):

(10:54):
after the top of the hour talkinghome improvement. You're at home with Gary
Sullivan and let's go talk with afriend. Friend. Welcome, Hi.
Look besting for getting rid of bedbugsand the only sure thing is using diet
tamacious earth. So that eliminated theentire bedbug problem. It will. It

(11:20):
kills bed bugs in six days.It kills their It kills their eggs.
The other thing is if the bedbugs had already gone into say your drawers
or so anything in their doors, don't wash them. Just put them in
the pillowcase, take them to laundromat, throw them in the dryer on high

(11:41):
heat for half an hour. Yeah, that will kill them. That will
the other thing. The other thingis to take up like thresholds, because
that's where they hide under thresholds, and as you said, the outlet covers
and things like that. The otherthing is it's always good to put them
so that if they escape out ofyour place and they're walking out of the

(12:05):
thresholder through the windows or something, put it on the outside of the building
as well, because then it protectsyour neighbors and what have you. Yeah,
I'll tell you the diatamacious earth andthat is a good product to eliminate
bugs in general. I know thereit's a wonderful agent for using it outside

(12:31):
to get rid of slugs and snails, diatamacious earth for folks that don't know,
it's actually the shells of diatems andthey're very sharp and it's almost like
a powder. I'm a little surprisedto hear you say it was that effective
with bedbugs. And I'm not disputingit. I'm just surprised because bedbugs,

(12:52):
boy, I tell you their survivorsto you know, I talked about them
not even eaten sometimes for like sixmonths. You think you got rid of
them, but in fact they wereinside the wall. As you mentioned,
how they come in and out ofthe house. Heat's a great way,
I know. That's a great tipfor people that are traveling, you know,

(13:13):
and take the suitcase, put itin a be very careful where you
put it into hotel rooms, andwhen you get it home to literally take
the clothes out of the suitcase fromthe garage in a basket into the dryer.
That's a good way. Heat isa is a good way to eliminate

(13:33):
him. A lot of pest controlcompanies, in fact, actually heat rooms
up to one hundred and forty degreesand that will kill or eliminate bedbugs,
except if they're hiding in the walland they're wrapped up in insulation. So
I think you pointed out and Iappreciate the call. You pointed out that

(13:56):
several things that worked, and that'sthe key. Just staying on it.
Try several things and keep trying washing, cleaning. If you got a backboard
with a lot of engravings on it, they like to hide in those little
engravings. The beating around the mattress, they like to hide in there,

(14:18):
The cuff on the back side ofa curtain, they like to hide in
there. And they're they're the sizeof a pinhead. So very difficult.
But yeah, there are certainly waysto get rid of everything. Takes time
and knowing that helps. All right, let's go to Teresa. Teresa,
welcome, Teresa. Not there, all right, Teresa, No, not

(14:48):
there all right. Let me giveyou the phone number. It is eight
hundred eight two three A two fivefive. Got on a roll talking about
different pests around your home. Answera problem this time year or two.
You know, one of the thingsthat a lot of people really don't think
of is, especially this time ofyear. You think about it in the

(15:09):
winter time, insulation and we're justgonna hear more and more about insulation and
ventilation is equally important in the news. Yesterday I heard it again. It's
been going on now for about sixmonths. Gas stoves killing people and people
suffering from asthma. Listen, that'scorrect. But there's always a butt,

(15:33):
right. We've been talking about thatfor fifteen years. Maybe it wasn't about
the gas stove, but we weretalking about indoor air pollution with a question
mark why Well, why is becausewe're making our homes tighter. So right

(15:54):
away when people hear this story,oh we're gonna outly guests, all these
people get all honked off and theygo, I've had a guess stove for
fifty years. It's never affected me. True, true, But it's affecting
people now because our homes are tight. Now. I'm not advocating getting rid

(16:15):
of gas stoves. What I'm sayingis the solution to that is the same
solution I've preached for fifteen years. If you insulate, you need to ventilate.
So if you're making your home tighter, you've got to bring a means

(16:38):
to your home and it's becoming codin different parts of the country where it
can pull out the indoor air andjust the natural process of us opening doors
and windows and coming and going, fresh air will be introduced to that house
along with a very very slow airexchanging units in the house. I've talked

(17:03):
about the easy breathe I know forfifteen years. The increase in asthma has
dramatically increased in the last twenty years. And maybe it's a guest stove,
maybe not, But what it is, it's indoor air pollution. It's the
stagnant air, it's the polluted airinside our homes. We got to pull

(17:26):
that out. We got to bringa measured amount of fresh air in.
So when I heard that news storyyesterday, I could just imagine everybody's going
like, that's crazy. We've hadguessed stuff, look deeper, look deeper.
Stoves. Yes, there's some pollutionfrom those, but guess what,

(17:48):
how about all the cleaners we use, how about the furniture we have,
the carpets we have same thing.VOCs and our homes are tighter. You
know, where I grew up,you could, you know, on a
winter day, you could you couldfeel the north breeze coming through the house
not so much anymore. So youknow, whether you have a guest over

(18:11):
or not, I'm not advocating eitherone. The one thing I'm advocating is
take a look at the healthy airand send your home. And too much
humidity. You can smell when youwalk down into the basement, molding,
mustiness, that's all pollutants. Pullthat out of the house through ventilation and

(18:32):
let the fresher air come down andsettle in the lower parts of the home.
And that's the healthy home. That'sreally the crux of where we should
be focusing. If you love yourguest stove, think about ventilation all right,
and when you insulate, talk tothem about ventilate all right. We

(18:52):
got lines for you. It's eighthundred eight two three eight two five point
five. Happy to talk to youabout your home price, jets or pest.

open and Jeff welcome as good morning, Gary morning. I want I wanted

(22:45):
to relate a situation we had onetime. We lived in an older house
and h we had some guests stayingover and they said there was bed books
upstairs and nobody had ever been upthere sleeping before for a long long time.
And we investigated and there was allkinds of bugs in the mattress,

(23:07):
beating and everything all oh my gosh, yeah, And we we checked them
out. We had an exterminator orcancome in and look at them. And
they were somehow related to a bat. They weren't a bed bug, but
they were just as prolific as bedbugs, and they were all over the
place, but and they're really tiny. But they were somehow. I don't

(23:30):
remember the name of the bug,but I just thought that I thought i'd
throw that out there. So didyou have bats in the attic or something?
You know? Yeah, there wasan old house. There were bats
everywhere. Wow, how'd they getrid of them? We just actually just
used a bug spray, like apyreethan type thing, and that took care

(23:55):
of him. So that pretty muchgot rid of them. It sounds like
they were little bit easier to exterminatethan bet bedbugs. They might have been
just bad, but bed bugs arereally difficult to get rid of. So
I mean, just springing up pyrethanwouldn't have got rid of a bed bug.
So at least you made out there. Yeah, we lucked out.
I got Jeff. Let me putyou on hold and Danny will get your

(24:19):
name and your address, and arescue would like to send you a pack
of well multiple packs of some ofthe different traps they have. I have
a couple kits to get rid ofto you. Thank you for that story,
and I appreciate it. So yeah, you bet you you bet you
You know some of the traps thatare in the rescue pests giveaway their new

(24:44):
flypads, and I think we're aboutout of them, but I'll check with
Danny flypads. They got the antbates in there. They got the carpenter
be trap in there, which I'malways breaking about. Japanese beetles are going
to be shown up pretty soon. They got that trap in there, moth
traps, spider traps, wasp traps, and yellowjacket traps. We certainly thank

(25:08):
them for their generosity. I thinkthey gave us six or seven eight kits
to kind of give away this weekend. I'll check to see if we have
any more. We'll go back inthe closet and take a look. But
happy to take your calls regarding homeimprovement. And we were kind of focusing
on some pest issues. I'm notsure what that bug was, but that's

(25:32):
interesting. They're obviously still biting therefrom bats. Holy cow. All right,
always something, always something, Andof course you can always you know,
maybe not for bedbugs, but forbugs themselves. There's a lot of
different parameters of pyrethans dust that youcan go around the xterier of your home

(25:53):
to create a fortress. Ants arebig, the ant bits a lot of
companies have different ant bates out there. One thing that makes the rescue ant
batel a little bit different. Hisants are pretty smart. They change their
diet depending on the temperature, sothey'll be looking for a high protein diet

(26:15):
and a carbohydrate diet. And Iforget which one it is. I think
it's carbohydrate diet in the winter andprotein. But it it fluctuates, especially
in areas where you have yo yoweather, which many of us do.
But it's the only way to getrid of ants effectively. You can create
barriers around the X tier of yourhome. I mean, that's fine,

(26:37):
but the only way to really getrid of them, like so many insects,
is get to the queen. Andyou know, if you have ants,
there's colonies around that house. AndI had ants really bad, probably
ten years ago. The guy toldme. He says, I don't know
how big your aunt colony is somewherein your yard underground, but I'm telling

(26:59):
you what, You've got more antsthan I've ever seen, and multiple,
multiple, multiple treatments. And ifyou get the baits, which we try,
and you know, ants their joband one job only find food,
fine water, bring it to thecolony. That's their job and eventually eliminate

(27:26):
the queen. It eliminates the colony. They die off and you don't have
him in your house anymore. Soby having the bait that can handle both
types of diets, if you will, makes it more effective. Let's go
to Marsie Marcy. Welcome, goodmorning, How are you doing fine?

(27:48):
Thank you? My daughter and Iboth have issues with the big black spiders
and the little tiny black jumping spiders. Uh huh. How do we eliminate
them getting in? Well, firstof all, are they in the house
all over? Where're at? Arethey outside to mainly around the dampness like

(28:11):
sinks or basement. I had oneoutside on my porch one year. Do
not ever step on anything. Itwas big and I stepped on it.
I bet hunters come flying out everywhere. Really. Well, obviously, you
know we just got finished talking abouttraps. Obviously there are spider traps that

(28:32):
rescue makes. But there's other things, especially with spiders, that you need
to work on and that's really changingtheir environment. Okay, So when you
say damp spiders love damp places, they love to you know, they start

(28:52):
outside and they find their way inside. Right, So, people that put
firewood up against the people that havebushes, and it's really hard to get
some old dead leaves out from behindthe bushes. That's where they start.
That's where they start. So reallytaking a look around the whole perimeter of
the house and look for areas whereyou know, if you were a spider

(29:18):
and you were looking for a darkdamn place, that's what you need to
clean up sticks and leaves and thingslike that. Then also look for any
entry or penetration through the house. And what I'm talking about there is dryer
vents, gas pipes, electric lines, cable lines, pipes from the furnace.

(29:45):
All those penetrate through the home.Whether it's a wood home, brick
home, concrete home, they allhave these penetrations and over time they might
be real tight, you know, they might be mortared around them or calked
around them. But over time thingsfail and we get you know, we
we we don't check those areas andinspect those and have a you know,

(30:11):
can of insecticidal foam and fill upthose gaps or calking, fill up those
gaps that you can eliminate entry pointsfour pests inside your home. And then
again use your spider traps or uh. We talked about pyrethans being sprayed along

(30:32):
the outside of the house again creatingcreating that barrier. That's the uh,
that's the way you'd want to getrid of those, Marcy. And all
right myself, I just stepped onthem or pick them up them. Yeah,
well you can, you can dobetter and that and another thing you
might do is also wherever you seea spider web, they can they bend

(30:53):
those webs to you know, trapother insects for food and a lots those
are so protein that they can eattheir web to subsist on to you know,
keep fueling their bodies. So whereveryou see webs, knock them down.
So really trying to keep a pristineenvironment around the outside of the house

(31:15):
and for the webs even on theinside of the house. That's key.
I'll tell you what, Marcy.I'll put you on hold. We got
one more trap package giveaway and Daniel'llget your information and we'll take care of
you there from our friends at Rescue. And that'll be the end of our
rescue trap giveaways. And I appreciateall the calls about pest. All right,

an issue. We had water thatis penetrated into the ceiling and has caused
that brown ring. And the firstthing everybody wants to know is quite honestly,

(35:20):
is like, okay, so whatkind of primer do I use?
And of course you got to usethe stain blocking primer. You got to
seal that stain in or it willpenetrate through your new code of paint.
So we're going to fix that up. We're gonna make it look nice.
But the real question is what causedthat stain? Was it calking from the

(35:43):
upstairs bathroom that had failed around thetub. Was it a leaky wax seal
underneath the toilet? Was it theboot on the vent pipe? By the
way, those only last about tenyears. Was it flashing up on the
roof, was it missing shingles? What caused that leak? There's no sense

(36:05):
in doing anything until you find thatleak and then assessing how much water got
in there, because there's a lotof beginning material inside that. The back
of drywall is of course paper,so it's urgaining material, and you got
water, and every home has thousandsof mold sportes floating around set all that.

(36:29):
You got a mold growing and ifyou haven't fixed the source of the
leak, that colony will get biggerand bigger and bigger and bigger. So
you're dealing with the stain. That'sthe thing you can see. That's the
superficial thing. That's what gets ourjuices flowing. And we got to fix
that. But that's, you know, that's putting a band aid on a

(36:52):
really deep cut. Possibly, yougot to find out what needs to happen
to correct the problem, and thencosmetically we'll touch all right. Back to
the phones, we've got Gina,Gina welcome. Hey Gary, this is
actually Chris though called in but I'mokay, gotcha. Got a question for

(37:13):
you. I'm looking to paint anexposed concrete foundation. It's only about three
years old. I've read acid, then paint. I've read pressure washing,
then paint. I go to thepaint stores. I get conflicting information.
So what what is the best wayto prep the surface to get the paint
to it here? Well, numberone, you're you're labeling that paint's going

(37:34):
to tell you what that particular productrequires. Now that's a cheap answer,
so but that's really what That's reallywhat you want to pay attention to.
Quite honestly, all painting, regardlessof words done, it's dry, clean,
bondable surfaces. So a concrete foundation, we will make sure there's no

(37:59):
mold, milk, douce, fungus, algas, dirt. Pressure washer will
do that, so that would befine. Now some paints, not all
paints will tell you to use anacid wash on there. An acid wash
would be used on there if it'sa really non pores, hard slick surface.

(38:24):
And again it should have that onthe directions because then they don't all
require just a heavy duty detergent willsometimes work quite nicely. I know quick
Crete makes an efflorescence and masonry cleanerrust remover combination. It's a non acid,

(38:51):
but it will satisfy probably most requirementsto make it a clean, good
bondable surface. So you know,if it was me, i'd probably get
some of that detergent and masonry cleaneror oxygenated bleach. That's another one I
talk about all the time. Thatis a really good detergent for concrete.

(39:17):
Unless that label says etch the concrete, I would use the two that I
just mentioned. I would put theoxygenated bleach or the masonry cleaner by quick
Create on that surface, leave iton for about ten or fifteen minutes or
whatever the directions actually called for. Then I'd get my pressure washer and I'd

(39:39):
agitate that with the pressure washer anduse the pressure washer as an agitator and
a rinsing agent. Let it dry. If you're use in latex paint,
I would say drying time before beforeyou should paint would probably be two to
three hours. And you can findout on the label too, because it'll

(40:00):
talk how long to paint after it'swet or after it's been raining. But
usually two to three hours for alate TXT paint is fine. You know,
oil based paints aren't around very often, but you know it used to
be like a day or two.So we've come a long way on that.
So you know, clean, dry, bondable surface, and you should
be good. Late TEXT paints areso much better than the old oil based

(40:22):
paints in terms of adhesion. Two, especially on concrete. Not so much
on wood, but on concrete.Uh. They're breathable, which is really
good. And they're flexible, whichis really good. So read the label
and then take what I just saidpretty much as a good guideline, and

(40:43):
I think you'll be fine. ExtOne, thank you, You're welcome,
Thank you, take care all right. Then let's go to Teresa. Teresa
welcome, Hi Gary, thank youfor taking my call. I was on
before and I was driving in mycall drop, so I hear you talking
to me, but I couldn't drunkback to you. I have got a

(41:06):
chipmunk problem, all right. SoI heard yesterday the lady saying about the
exterminator, that external exterminator or something. I did read about that and it
said that you had to have itlike fifteen or thirty minutes your car running
to kill them. Uh huh,But that's it all. It seemed like
an awful long time to me.But my question is is I did I

(41:30):
am trapping? I am trapping them? Oh so I got a trap,
I got them, and I'm takingthem to a different location. My question
is is how do I know thatI've gotten all of them? There are
several holes dug underneath you know mysidewalk. Does every hole contain a different
chipmunks? Do they? You know, where there's two chipmunks, there may

(41:54):
be six chipmunks. I mean,I I don't know how you'll know.
I guess when you quit seeing them, you know. I mean, that's
that's the only way that I wouldknow. I mean, there could be
a bunch of them. There couldjust be a couple of random chipmunks.
So just keep your eyes out, keep a trap out. When we're no

(42:14):
longer seeing them and no longer trappingthem, I would say you've taken care
of the problem. Okay. Ido have another question. Do they go
down and just have a home downthere or do they come back out another
side? If our entrance and extraexit the same hole, usually it's the
same hole. But not always, but usually, like underneath the stoop,

(42:37):
that's where we find a lot ofchipmunks because they burrow. They burrow,
they've created this passageway and they're usuallyin and out of that. And in
fact, if you've had chipmunks fora while, you probably see them around
the same area pretty much all thetime. Yes, yes, okay,
so yeah, right, all right, very good, thank you much,

(43:00):
and uh yeah, chipmunks by theway, number one, she said,
I know I'm going to get email, so I want to interject. I
didn't talk about running carbon monoxide offa car down into a chipmunk Hall number
two as what was the other Ohyou when you trap them in take them
away. I just want to letyou know in different states there are you're

(43:23):
not allowed to do that. There'sdifferent animals that you cannot relocate. So
you might want to check with yourstate board and see exactly what the laws
are. They got it all online, but I just wanted to pass that
along to you. All right,Well, let's take a break. The
music's playing in the top of thehour, and I'll also open up the

(43:45):
phone lines and if you've got aquestion, well we'll put you in line.
