Speaker 1 (00:00):
Whoa, and welcome back again to the short time wrestling
podcast Wrestling Fans. I am your host, Hall of Fame
wrestling writer, broadcaster and announcer Jason Bryant, and we are
(00:21):
going into the archives today, So David Taylor will be
the interview. But this is an old David Taylor interview.
This is not the first time I'd ever interviewed David,
but it was. It was from Wrestling four one one,
And if you were unfamiliar with what Wrestling four one
one is, so back in two thousand and eight, Jay Robinson,
(00:42):
who was then a coach of the University of Minnesota,
was starting a company called Media Sports Productions. In the
previous year they brought on some people to do some
fundraising and then so eight oh nine was going to
be the launch. I was working for the NBCA running
Internet at the time, and Kyle Klingman was working at
what was then the Danble International Wrestling Museum and something
(01:02):
like that. It had a long name before the Hall
of Fame and the Gable Museum merged to become the
Dan Gable Museum, you know, with the National Wrestling Hall
of Fame. So Kyle and I are brought in to
coordinate this effort, and the idea behind Wrestling for One
was to create a sports center for wrestling in an
era of this is really when satellite TV was starting
to take off. We still didn't have like YouTube was
(01:23):
not even like longer than ten minutes, so internet shows
in the current iteration did not exist. What we did
was really really ahead of the curve. So we had
guests frequently, and Kyle had been doing a podcast before
it was even a podcast. He was actually doing a
radio show called on the Mat, which, after Full On
(01:44):
one died its slow, kind of miserable death. After one year,
Kyle went back into that On the Mat, and that
had been a staple of the matt Talk podcast network
since this brand was re brought back from version one
point zero, which was a jiniua website. Now it's a
home for wrestling podcasts. So during that year two thousand
(02:05):
and eight two thousand and nine, that season, Kyle and
I did over one hundred and forty episodes. They're still alive,
by the way, if you go to Mattalk online dot
com and scroll down to the bottom, there's a link
of like retired podcast. Well, there's a logo there for
Wrestling four one one, and so we're looking at right
now it is November fifth, two thy twenty four as
(02:26):
I released this episode. This show was recorded May eighth,
two thousand and nine, which at the time I didn't
even realize would be one year before I actually got married.
So I was married on May eighth, twenty ten. So
go figure there's a weird wrestling tie in there. So
David Taylor wins the Dave Schulz High schol Excellence Award
from the National Wrestling Hall of Fame. Why am I
(02:48):
releasing a sixteen year old interview or fifteen year old interview? Well,
we know that David Taylor has just recently completed wrestling.
He was a bronze medallist at the most recent Olympic
World Championships in Toronto. Albin wrestled Sateuly. I've wrestled Gasipour.
It was, it was, it was. It was kind of
a wild way to end it. He had a gritty
match with gas import win the bronze. You had three
(03:10):
World Olympic champs on that side in the bracket, so
there's a lot of DT stuff. So I figured, like,
what have we got right now? So I went as
I think about this. I was in the car today
after I come back from voting. By the way, civic responsibilities,
civic duty. I don't care your politics. I just I
just know that if if you vote, you have the
right to complain about it. That's how I look at it.
I am staunchly a political and I hate talking politics.
(03:33):
But I will say this, I can hate talking politics
because I vote, and I will again, I'm not going
to argue with anybody about their politics. That's just it
doesn't interest me. However, I can have my opinion because
I vote. That is something that we as Americans have
the unique right to do. Not all cultures and countries
have this freedom. And you know, pardon the soapbox for
(03:55):
a minute. Freaking go vote. Go vote. If you're hearing
this before election day is over, I'm gonna try to
drop it. If not, you know, you know, you always
vote next time, you know, like vote local elections. Anyway,
I'm on my way back from my polling place, and
I'm like, it just popped in my head. I was like, man,
me and Kyle did that wrestling fol and one with
David Taylor a long time ago.
Speaker 2 (04:15):
I wonder, like, let's let's do that.
Speaker 1 (04:16):
Let's re release that because we did the same thing
weirdly enough, when or I did the same thing when
Kyle and I had the Penn State eighty on after
the hiring of Cale Sanderson. You know, it was like
what you know, had Tim Curley on when you know,
fifteen years after Caale was hired. So, and this is
interesting you go back and listen to this show. David
didn't know where he was going to go. Then he
had been an early commitment, he had been an early
(04:38):
signeed Iowa State, and then Caale had left Iowa State
and had been recently hired at Penn State. So let's
see if I can look at the timeline on this,
because we interviewed the eighty before then. So okay, So
we had Jamie Pollard on, Okay, I was stayed hired
Kevin Jackson the wee a couple of days earlier.
Speaker 2 (05:00):
So when did we have Curly on? Let's see, So.
Speaker 1 (05:04):
We had Tim Curley on April twenty fourth, so this
would have been about two weeks after we had Penn
State a d on the show. He was on the
show April twenty four, two thousand and nine, Episode sixty seven,
David Taylor is on the show here on episode seventy six.
So quick turn around. We were doing two three shows
a week. We did a bunch of them. Actually we were, Yeah,
(05:27):
we were doing three or four shows a week. I
think we were doing three or four with wrestling four
one one and anyway, so went back, pulled this up
and there may be some donation links.
Speaker 2 (05:38):
Don't worry about them.
Speaker 1 (05:39):
There may be some references to what we're doing a
four one one, don't worry about that.
Speaker 2 (05:43):
The theme song by TP and Esco. You can worry
about that all you want.
Speaker 1 (05:47):
That was still one of the awesomely cheesy things that
I caught crap for. I thought, thanks Travis Piccard for
doing that in Michael Aris for what they did with us,
And yeah, I mean some people thought it was cheesy.
I thought, hey, cool, nice. I mean, the Realist Sport
even has my name in it. So I'm indebted to
those guys for just dropping my name, because you know,
(06:07):
that's kind of cool. That being said, moving on with
this David Taylor Show. Now, before we get to the show,
I have again into week three of relaunching the newsletter,
The Mantal Online Daily Wrestling News there's a free option
which you can sign up for at mantok online dot com.
Speaker 2 (06:23):
Slash News that's through my substack.
Speaker 1 (06:25):
If you're not famavorite substack, it's just a delivery engine
for newsletters and stuff very popular. There are wicked substacks
out there, and you can if you use the platform.
It's just part of what you're already used to. If
not nothing changes with your email. Well, I also have
the opportunity to drop some ad free podcast in there,
just like a new Patreon And Mike McMahon who does
a college hockey podcast that I listened to and a
(06:46):
newsletter called College Hockey Insider.
Speaker 2 (06:48):
He does a mailbag podcast.
Speaker 1 (06:49):
And I know that we've had Tim Foley and then
Jagger have done their mail bags, and then you know
Flow does questions from friends and things like that. Well,
you know what, I don't get asked enough questions. I'm
willing and able to answer your questions. So if you've
got a question, drop me a line Jason Atbryant Wrestling

weekly of your questions.
Speaker 2 (07:13):
Yeah, a lot of people are doing this but you know, I've.
Speaker 1 (07:15):
Got a unique background of statistical research that I can
throw at you as well. So if you've got those
history stack questions or things like that and it's something
I had not thought of, I'll be able to research that.
So that's something I want to throw out there. So
I'm gonna be playing with the mailbag format. Also on
the substack. I'm doing some premium items there in addition
(07:36):
to just the plain newsletter, which is the stories and
releases from the day in college wrestling. So again, Matt

to go there. That'll send you to the substack page
where you can sign up again for free. There will
be premium teasers and such for other stuff that I'm
doing there. That stuff all goes out to basically support
what I'm doing here. So Mailbag podcast will be coming
(07:57):
when I get some sources. You got questions, We've got answers. Wait,
that's somebody's who says that that's a commercial somewhere.
Speaker 2 (08:04):
It's not.
Speaker 1 (08:04):
O'Reilly stamp me off, break me off, a piece of
that fancy feast MEO mix kick cat bar. That's what
I got office reference. Anyway, here's the Magic Man from
May eighth, two thousand and nine from Wrestling four one

I'd like to thank you for spending your time with
me because you've always got time for short time. Here's

Speaker 5 (10:00):
Welcome to Wrestling for one one Radio. I am Kyle Klingman,
joined by Jason Bryant, and we have with us David
the magic Man Taylor. And what is that funny? Because
do you know what the magic man reference is from?
Speaker 3 (10:16):
David?
Speaker 6 (10:17):
Of course night got it?
Speaker 1 (10:19):
The Ballad of got It? Hey, are you aware of
the snow Blindness and cats?
Speaker 3 (10:25):
No, you have to fill me in. I'm I'm oblivious here.
Speaker 2 (10:31):
Blind It's it's the end of the movie man.
Speaker 3 (10:33):
Yeah, yeah, that's true. That's true.
Speaker 5 (10:36):
Well, okay, before we even get into your credentials and
what you've accomplished on the wrestling mat and where your
future holds for college wrestling, I need just a little
bit of a background because I'm not in the know
on on high school and what's going on. How many
people in high school have cell phones? And how many
people text message? Pretty much everyone?
Speaker 6 (10:57):
Yeah, it's kind of like a mandatory I think you're
in high school. Yeah, all pony message?
Speaker 3 (11:04):
Okay, all right? And how about Facebook and my Space?
Everyone do that?
Speaker 6 (11:09):
Yeah, that's pretty common. Fight dot common is testing?
Speaker 1 (11:12):
Okay, well it's uh yeah, so I have to ask,
this is a this is a competition, and how many
Facebook friends are you up to?
Speaker 6 (11:20):
Am I up to you? I don't I can tell
you exact number, but thanks, I have quite a few.
Speaker 3 (11:28):
Yeah, you talk to him when you.
Speaker 2 (11:29):
Get over sixteen hundred, and we'll see how big of
a deal you really are.
Speaker 1 (11:31):
No, yeah, minute, Yeah, you still got we still got
ways to go to catch Ben Astron, who's to well up.
Speaker 2 (11:37):
He's approaching four thousand. Michael Phelps is over ten thousand.
But anyway, as far as far.
Speaker 1 (11:42):
As your high school credentials go, one hundred and eighty
and two four time Division two Ohio state champion for
Graham High School, Saint Paris, Ohio. First things first, how
many people think Saint Paris Graham is the name of
the high school.
Speaker 6 (11:56):
A lot of people actually, but you know, it's getting more.
It's getting a little more. Uh, people are understanding how
there's Graham High School and it's in town Saint Paris
because we've gotten gotten no better. So now people will
know we are more than they have in the past.
Speaker 2 (12:12):
But I think it's a color mistake when you first
burst on the scene.
Speaker 1 (12:15):
I remember interviewing you after your first Beast of the
East championship and you you're rather quiet. You're kind of
like a deer in the headlights in terms of the
big tournaments in high school wrestling.
Speaker 2 (12:24):
How is that that that changed?
Speaker 1 (12:25):
You seem to be a little more adept in media
interviews and a little more comfortable talking how much talking
about the mature maturation process of not just you as
a wrestler, but you was. You know, you're going to
be interviewed from here on out in terms of your
college you know, college performance and your high school career
and whatnot. So you know what steps have you taken
to improve that aspect of your wrestling career. The talking part, Well,
(12:48):
first of.
Speaker 6 (12:48):
All, first time I interviewed me, I was a freshman
and I kind of look at the little girl about
five years old, you do have those are the first
times that anyone they're playing home microphone, you know, and
uh answer the question, but honestly tried to say that.
You know, one of the biggest things is for a
wrestling you know, what they're doing with the sport is awesome,
(13:09):
going around and filming everybody and getting interviews. I mean,
it's like the answer too, the answer Not only is
it an awesome thing where it's a tool to to
watch other people wrestle and watch other interviews and get
insirations from other people from watching people talk, and you know,
then you kind of I don't know, I guess it's
I mean I like talking. I'm really talking to person.
(13:30):
We just figure out how to how to talk in
front of the camera, I guess. And it's kind of
makes it a lot easier that are.
Speaker 1 (13:38):
Looking at interviews and going, okay, man, I really got
to be good. I don't want to sound like that
other guy. You want to sound educated, Yeah, definitely.
Speaker 6 (13:45):
You know, everyone want to sound kind of kind of
dumb because that, you know, then everyone can laugh and
make fun of you. So you don't ever want to
do that.
Speaker 1 (13:52):
Well, you just recently picked up a huge national award,
the Dave Schultz High School Excellence Award for the country.
You want a regional award obviously wanted the state. What
does an award like that mean for for for you?
Speaker 6 (14:06):
Well, it's it's pretty awesome. Uh, you know, it's kind
of you growing up, you hear about it, and you uh,
I never really sat down and worked at all the
award winners until recently when I was the regional violence
And it's a pretty impressive group of people, and you know,
it's it's really to join that that, you know, a
group of wrestlers is pretty pretty special, you know, and
(14:29):
then you feel, you know, pretty awesome when I got
that got that award, and uh, you know, someone was
trying to explain, you know, so asking about it, and uh,
you know, what is it compare to and you know
kind of kind of compares, I guess to the Heisant
Trophy in football. And when you and you look at
it that way, it's pretty it's pretty awesome.
Speaker 1 (14:49):
A couple of good, good wrestlers were up in the
running with you, and another was at your weight class,
Eric Rahalis, And there was a lot of speculation this
year in regards to the rankings and how you guys,
if you guys would meet up or if you wouldn't.
And Eric's always seemed to have been the guy that's
been behind the number one guy no matter which way
he goes. Uh, what is have you guys ever wrestled
(15:09):
in the past? And and you know what is the
Is there any rivalry there? Maybe with the rankings and
all right, I got a one up him, so I
stayed number one or whatnot?
Speaker 2 (15:16):
Or is it just go out on the.
Speaker 3 (15:17):
Mat and get it done.
Speaker 4 (15:20):
I mean.
Speaker 6 (15:22):
We've wrestled. We wrestled a lot when we were younger. Well,
kind of a lot of good group of kids right
down in high school. We all were in the Stanway
cross as when we were younger, and you know kids
type circuits. So I mean we've probably wrestled four or
five six times a lot of pay. Wrestler was in
eighth grade at a Lockham tournament and uh, something got
(15:42):
in high school. I don't think we ever wrestled because
you know, he get a girls square earlier and I
did and got bigger. And then you know, this year,
finally we both feel like long for your freshman year
and we were like second player behind Eric h four
Oliver and he got bigger and the missiere the same
way again, and we were you know, one and two
(16:04):
and almost all the rankings. So so you know, it's
a good companiveness to go out and to wrestle and
have some you know, the other kids considered one of
the best in the country to you know, to be
in the same way class. You know, I guess it's
you know, kind of motivating and and stuff like that.
So you know, you never really got a chance to
(16:25):
wrestle this year, and a couple opportunities that you know,
we had and it just didn't work out.
Speaker 1 (16:30):
So, uh, well, you're talking about gross burds. Eric obviously
hit one, probably going to go one thirty three one.
He signed for the University of Michigan. You were signed
the national letter of intent to Iowa State University. And
obviously the developments of the last two weeks have changed
that it was reported on JJ Huddle and a couple
of other sites that you released from your NLI and
you've kind of opened the door for a couple of
(16:51):
coaching visits.
Speaker 2 (16:52):
You had one on Wednesday.
Speaker 1 (16:54):
Now, what is it going to be like to basically
start the recruiting process, well not necessarily start it.
Speaker 2 (16:59):
Over again, but kind of from the door again. How
has that been?
Speaker 1 (17:02):
Uh? What is what was the situation and how you
got your release from Iowa State? And who are the
teams in the picture right now?
Speaker 6 (17:09):
Well, uh, you know, kind of the first thing is
when when I knew my sision go to Iowa State, Uh,
you know, I was right. I was really pretty confident
that that's where I wanted to go from the beginning.
And I never really gave you know, anyone else's work.
I just I knew that's where I wanted to go.
And I made a decision real early. I've bur world
in the spring, and uh you know one of the
(17:29):
reasons for doing that is I knew that I was
getting ready to make a big jump and wait, and
you know, I was going through my fourth iron Man,
uh title no one ever wants for before and at
the time, I you know, I still think of the
best decision was to make a decision early and really
focused on getting ready to see iron Man tournament because
that was really important to me. And I thought, you know,
(17:50):
maybe taking some visits that would confused things and you know,
maybe create some distractions and uh yeah, I thought that
was the best to the best decision at the time.
And you know, then it turned out where a couple
of weeks ago, you know, everyone, you know, the rest
of the world was turned upside down and my future
is kind of I don't know. It seemed like I want,
(18:15):
you know, I say what it was maybe one day
night or Thursday night, thinking, you know, my my wife
said that I was skate and then all of a sudden,
you know, next morning, you know he's gone, which you know,
I kind of he said that he was gonna leave,
and at first the first thing you think is, you know,
I think this is awesome. And then once it kind
(18:38):
of sunk in that he was leaving, it it's kind
of like an emotional lower coast because you think that
you have to go through all the other processes of
getting a release. You know, who's gonna move in new culture,
Iowa State and all that kind of stuff was you know,
and then you went off for a couple of weeks
where I had no idea. It was all unknown, and
it was most frustrated time. You know, at times it
(19:01):
was you know, you'd think how often the situation is
and then finally you know, the higher coach Jackson, and
UH we made a call. He called us and I
talked to him, and I have a lot of respect
for coach Jackson. I I hopefully that one day that
you know, he can be a part of help me win.
(19:22):
I want to medal. I want you to you want
to go medals and you know the next couple of years.
And uh, he said, he said to me, he said,
if if I can't help you win in I was staying,
I'd like to help you win somewhere else. So he was,
you know, he was, I couldn't. I couldn't ask for
a better situation in terms of let me go. So
(19:43):
he uh, you know, you made the calls, got my
release and we wriend here. I got my release and
I got a call from UH coach Sanderson, Penn State
coach Ryan and Ohio State and coach Smith from Oklahoma State.
And it's really based the same schools that I was
considering for going to. Iowa State was Iowa State, Ohio
(20:05):
State home of State. Now it's it's the same coaching staff,
but it's that coach Sansers at Prince State. So those
are three places I'm considering right now. And that's kind
of where I am right now. Just h really, I
guess experience in recruiting process for the first time. You know,
it's the first time I had coaches sit down in
my house and talk to me because you're making early decison.
(20:27):
The last time that never really happened. So it's kind
of just this is exciting, and I mean, I guess
it's just something new I'm going through right now.
Speaker 1 (20:38):
You can have a chance to take any on campus visits.
Obviously you didn't take obviously too many with committing early.
Are you still going to have a chance to check
out these campuses or are you just relying on home
visits and phone calls right now?
Speaker 6 (20:50):
Well, I only made one official visit out the Iowa
state last time, so I I have four visits to take,
and I'm going to take three, I'm pretty sure. And
you know, so coach coach Sanerson that is at the house,
uh two nights ago. Uh, Coach Ryanico Traskiel at the
house last night. And I think I'm with Coach Smith
(21:16):
here shortly and then set up some visits to take
and uh find out what the best place is for me.
I'd like to follow Chris Anderson. I think a lot
of him, and uh, but I'm not one hundred percent
sure what uh what uh you know what exactly I'm
going to do. I'm just kind of looking at everything,
(21:37):
and you know, looking at all the different and all
the different circumstances and finding the best place for me
where we with lest places so I can be. And
that's kind of life where I am right now.
Speaker 5 (21:50):
What do you like about Cale Sanderson? That's where you
initially went as far as Iowa stayed, and that's where
he was. What is it that drew you to kale
and uh in Iowa State?
Speaker 6 (22:01):
I mean, well, growing up, you know he is you
know now looks like him winning the gold him going
through his uh four national titles. That was like, my
that's I looked up to you. That's who we watched
on TV. You know he was like, uh, he still is.
He's you know, he's I look at him as one
(22:21):
of the highest highest people I look up to. And
when I was thought to how off with beds one
day he was a coach and I could go with
him and uh so that was kind of the opportunity
that that was made available. And that's uh one of
the Maazings that they might decision to go out of state,
and it was a good to see. I mean, it
was a good uh it was a real good situation
(22:43):
that I would stay the guys in the team and
the coaching staff and uh so, but uh, I guess
that's you know, he's really think a lot of him
as a wrestler and as a person. You know, there's
not much more.
Speaker 2 (23:01):
In terms of you mentioned your weight jump.
Speaker 1 (23:03):
People have said they possibly can see you as as
up to maybe one fifty seven one sixty five pounded
by the time you were a senior. You started out
first two years at one oh three and you really
weren't very big as your freshman year, and you really
weren't that big of a one thirty five this year.
In terms of you know, builds and whatnot, where do
you expect to go and how do you think you
could fit into either of those three programs that you're considering, Well,
(23:26):
we pretty.
Speaker 6 (23:27):
Much everybody what's is crazy as even last year I'll
pull off you know, one full pounders them with all
three programs look at me as a forty nine and
one fifty seven and one fifty five hundreds based on
how big my dad is and I had a pretty
big you know, I'm still pretty tall. I'm not not
(23:47):
real mature. I got a lot more, a lot more
growing to do, and I'm pretty comfort. I'm pretty sure that,
you know, based on the way I've been growing, that
I'm probably going to be I would say probably minimum.
I think at what fifty seven? I think one fifty
five is probably where where I'll end up, just because
(24:08):
the way kind of the way I've been growing and
ever mature more, I think that's gonna be a weight there.
I'll see myself that in college.
Speaker 1 (24:18):
Have you looked at guys careers through their high school years? Obviously, Ohio,
Ohio high school wrestling is is very huge. But there's
a guy like Tommy Rowlands who was assistant at Ohio
State now working with the Regional Training Center there.
Speaker 2 (24:29):
He started out his.
Speaker 1 (24:30):
Career, I believe in high school one hundred and twelve
pounds and ended his college career.
Speaker 2 (24:33):
As a heavyweight.
Speaker 1 (24:34):
So, yeah, any thoughts in uh, you know, obviously it
seems like you're gonna red shirt that first year regardless.
Speaker 6 (24:43):
Yeah, we know, red shirt, Uh for sure, that's that's
pretty important to meet a red shirt because I never
got held back when I was younger, So I think
that's that's good for me to get that X year
maturity and growth, get stronger, did justice the cold dress playing,
and I think that's the best thing to put me
in position to be a national champ as a freshman,
(25:06):
which is ultimately I'd like to do.
Speaker 3 (25:09):
Well.
Speaker 5 (25:09):
You just mentioned that you had your recruiting visit with
Tom Ryan. What are his assets? Uh so again, well,
what are what are the assets that Tom Ryan brings?
You just had your recruiting visit with him. You said,
what do you like about Tom Ryan?
Speaker 6 (25:24):
You know they bring him and coach has Did and
Ohio State has a pretty well runded coaching staff. You
know got coach os Delli is probably one of the
better freestyle coaches in the country. You've got coach hes
Did who you know him and Coach Ryan both are
really motivational people. They're coaches got the the experience on
(25:45):
the world level, the you know to the national champ
and coach Ryan just the really the coaches that's pretty
passionate about about, you know, trying to be the best
and bringing the first national, first national title at Ohiose State.
They're trying to you know, get that, and uh, they're young,
they're hungry, they're for new coaches at Ohiose State and
(26:10):
they want it really bad. And that's you know, that's
pretty I think it's pretty important for well, I'm thinking,
you know, I think I think everywhere has that. What
I think that's just one of the things that they
offer is that they're just they really want to they
really want to get it done, and you can just
tell we talk to them that they just kind of
(26:31):
a sense of that.
Speaker 1 (26:32):
Well, you seem to have good workout partners at Oklahoma
State should you go there, obviously with Jordan Oliver down
there and then some of the other recruits they brought in,
and then Penn State seems to be in terms of
workout partners a little lower on that list, although with
the Altons verbal ing as their rising seniors, that provide
some really solid middle weights there as well.
Speaker 2 (26:50):
But in terms of say going to Ohio State, you'd
have a couple.
Speaker 1 (26:52):
Of guys that you know pretty well, including one you
wrestled this year, bumping up Away. Talk about your match
with Colin Palmer this year that was that was one
a lot of people waiting to see they were hoping
they would see it, and they did see it.
Speaker 2 (27:04):
What type of atmosphere was that in the gym that
day when you wrestled.
Speaker 6 (27:07):
Palm, it was uh, in terms of high school wrestling,
it was unsab We We never had that many people
in our in our gym, and there was I did
seven hundred, eight hundred people in our gym, and it
was it was packed, and you know, everyone came to
see us, to see that match, and I, uh, I
(27:28):
kind of had on when I knew I was getting
a lot bigger this year. It kind of pressed out
the back of my mind thinking, you know, maybe at
our duel it was you know, I had the opportunity
to wrestle Collins just because it was been, you know,
two of the better guys and we've never been the
same light class and this year, you know, we were
pretty close, and you know, the opportunity was this was there,
(27:51):
and I decided on the way home from my tournament
that that week, week before I had duel, that I
wanted to do it. And I went up and not
to Coast Georgian. We thought about it and actually I
wont certified one thirty five, so he cut down and
one thirty five, so I could love to one forty
and it was just it was just it was the
(28:14):
things that the atmosphere was. It was so loud, it
was it was just it was just it was a thing.
At one time in the match, I couldn't hear myself
think it was that loud and it was hello. It's
kind of you know, the dream match when you think
about that was kind of it was kind of like
(28:36):
one of the main highlights of my high school career
was that match. It was pretty awesome.
Speaker 1 (28:40):
How do you stay motivated being so good all the
time because you've got several Fargo titles, you haven't haven't
lost there since you were a first you know, first
your cadet in Greco and then you've gone through. You've
won several Fargo titles. You've won for Ohio state titles.
You're the only one to win four iron Man titles.
And there's some very impressive wrestlers that have wrestled in
for iron Man. Matter of we've had Harry Lester on
(29:01):
the show. He only won three of them, and you're
you're talking about the iron Man Fargo state titles. How
do you stay motivated to keep wrestling and keep winning
at such.
Speaker 2 (29:11):
A high level.
Speaker 6 (29:13):
Uh, I just I have I have the drive that
I want to be the best. And you can't ever
you know, settle things that get better than everybody else,
because as soon as you see it, you think that
you know you're better than somebody, there's always somebody training
to beat you. There's always somebody else that I want
to come out and, you know and beat you. So
(29:36):
that now motivated me every day to you know, to
really focus on trying to get better every day. And
you know, I feel that I have a lot more
to learn.
Speaker 5 (29:45):
You know.
Speaker 6 (29:45):
I try and watch videos, films flow wrestling of you know,
unique wrestlers because I'm always trying to pick up new technique,
you know, different setups, shots, you know, just because I
think you can never stop learning. And I think the
minute that you think that you can't learn anything else
is when you're you're not going to get much farther
(30:08):
to the sport of wrestling. And I'm always trying to
learn more and I just want to keep I just
want to keep trying to be the best at you know,
every level. And I'm getting ready to go into a
brand new Brandy Wilb Almost College wrests. It's not high
school anymore. Cose cose rate, and I gotta I got
(30:32):
goals now, I kill college my goals. In order to
do that, I think I got to keep trying to
get better every day.
Speaker 5 (30:38):
I want to ask you about the college landscape, because
you just mentioned it there that you do have to
go to the next level.
Speaker 3 (30:43):
How much have you watched that next level?
Speaker 5 (30:45):
How much did you follow Ohio State almost pulling out
the upset with University of Iowa this year and just
following where the teams fall in line at the NCAA tournament.
Speaker 6 (30:55):
Well, I think, uh, I always be in the my
dad and I the Insteadway terms the last few years,
and you know, whenever there's you know, something recorded on
the Big ten network or the you know, the Midlands
or we're always we'll keep rolling it and then you know,
we'll go through and I watch different matches and watch
what different guys you're doing, you know, going through them.
(31:19):
I'm just always watching the next level of wrestling because soon,
you know, as the freshman, it's like I'll be there
a couple of years, sophomore all be here and then
all of a sudden, senior, I'm gonna be there next year.
So you know, if you're not watching it, if you're
not looking to see those guys doing, it's gonna be
a lot more of a surprise and get there than
(31:39):
it already is gonna be. And you know, good wrestling
is a good rest and good wrestling no matter where
it is. You know, on the Insteadway Tournament, that's the
best shows in the country because every every good guys
in that bracket and anything can happen, you know, and
there's always every year it is probably someone it's the
number one seed or a high seed gets the first round.
(32:01):
You know, that's just that's the life. That's that's what happened.
And they can change, can the aspect of the tournament
for a team or individual, And you just gotta I
just love going to I love watching good wrestling. You know,
every match. We made a mistake our first year we
missed the first round and Colman, Scott and Kyle and
(32:23):
you made so will never because anything could happen. You know,
anything can happen on any given day. You gotta be
prepared for every match, and that's to make sense the
tournament so awesome. You know, everyone's training all year and
in one tournament. It kind of defines your season.
Speaker 5 (32:41):
So all right, David, we h those are your wrestling questions.
Of course, high school and college dressers can't use the SNUS,
so this isn't the hot box. This is more we'll

Speaker 2 (33:23):
I'm gonna kill you, Klingman, no doubt about that.
Speaker 5 (33:25):
Chris Farley is awesome. So that's that's your next one.
And the final question we have here what great American
wrestler was known for his low single leg?
