Speaker 1 (00:00):
Whoa, it's a Short Time Wrestling podcast once again. Wrestling fans,
welcome back. The season is here. I record this intro
(00:23):
Halloween Night. We've already got our first d one duel
in the books, the earliest one actually. They got a
waiver to do this at the Battle of the Daddy
out in Cheyenne's Frontier days. This was a spectacle to
be seen. Mark Branch cowboy hats chaps, Scottie Sent's orange
cowboy hat sans chaps, but definitely a quality stash going on.
(00:47):
So they played that up. Really cool to see. On
UFC Fight Past. Shane Sparks had to call results of
that out there on the interwebs, so that BIS said.
Of course, that duel was crazy. There were like four
ranked upsets and three of them were like a row.
Maybe it was four in a row, it was, it was.
It was a wild way to start the year. That
being said, here on the Short Time Podcast today, we've
(01:08):
got Iowa Wrestling Media Day, so involved in that, we'd
like to thank University of Iowa f Letic Department for
sending that my way. Tom Brands, Jacory Teamer, Nelson Brands,
Ben Keeter, Mikey Calliendo, Steven Buchanan, Ryder Block, Drake Ayala,
and Gabe Arnold. You will hear for all of them
on the show and yes in that order. So that's
(01:30):
that's what you'll have. That's what you got. Also, programming update,
the newsletter is going to be a little bit more robust.
We're working down to the last couple free previews that
we're gonna put out next week. It's gonna be full board.
I'm gonna put a lot of stuff in there. You
can sign up for that at mattalkonline dot com, slash news.
(01:50):
You'll get free newsletters, but there are also be premium
newsletters there that you can sign up for, and already
the response has been very good, So thank you those
of you that have been longtime subscribers, you know, taking
the leap like cool. That content. The newsletter content will
also be there for you those of you who subscribe
on Patreon as well as we're gonna be moving some
of those ad free podcasts over to the substack side
(02:10):
of things, and nothing really changes if you're a patron,
although new Patreon sign ups are gonna have to go
through the app store and that's gonna take a big cut,
so I'm not really too keen on that, but those
of you existing, nothing's gonna happen there. College wrestling season
has been in full swing out in California in the
junior colleges. Actually booked my flight to cover them in Lamore, California.
(02:31):
Coming up in December. I'm gonna go from Lamore, California,
at Lamore College to Little Rock to announce the Little
Rock chatnoogadol right there that third week in December, so
it's gonna be busy. Last night I announced the inter
squad up at Saint Cloud State, so their ranked number
one in the country. They got eight and actually they
got nine guys ranked in Division two. It's gonna be
fun to watch in Division two. And of course in
(02:52):
Division three rankings came out Augsburg and Wartburg won too,
no surprise. Their Battle of the Berg's always a festive
one there. So that's what I got. It's IOWA Wrestling
Media Day. We've kept the barrage of media days going.
We had Women's iow Wrestling Media Day, we had app State,
and then we had the KSEYAC on the NAI side.
So once we get through this season starting up, interviews
(03:13):
will return to somewhat normal. Then again, I haven't done
a normal schedule of interviews and probably pre COVID, so
it's been interesting here on short time. As always, i'd
like to thank you for spending your time with me,
because you've always got time for short time.
Speaker 2 (03:26):
Who before you get started, the credential link has been
soiunded a couple of times. Now fill that out please
if you're planning on coming, even if you've got the
Olympic all sport plaffs, please fill that out just so
again idea of who is all planning to attend. A
couple times have been announced, the Stanford and Northwestern dual.
We'll both start at one pm Central. After we're done
(03:49):
with Tom, we'll go over to the wrestling room. If
you're a photographer you're using a tripod, We've got some
wood plank street to put down so you don't run
the mat no shoes in there, and turn it over
for coach for an opening statement, and then we'll take questions.
Speaker 3 (04:06):
Awesome, great to be here.
Speaker 4 (04:10):
This is a little bit unusual just because we compete
in two days and we're fired up about that.
Speaker 3 (04:16):
What I mean by unusual is this press day is
very close to competition.
Speaker 4 (04:23):
Our schedule is a little bit different, having someone early
that early and a dual meet, a big dual meet, going.
Speaker 3 (04:29):
To Oregon State. We're excited.
Speaker 4 (04:34):
So I imagine you have questions and I will answer them.
Speaker 3 (04:42):
How's that first question? Imagine that Tom.
Speaker 5 (04:48):
Obviously trans are common now at college athletics, and obviously
you have a lot of transfers.
Speaker 6 (04:53):
Could you give us a little background.
Speaker 7 (04:55):
On the group that you brought in and what was
the key to really get him?
Speaker 5 (05:00):
Is it like a recruiting what you may have done
when there's.
Speaker 3 (05:04):
Two ways to get transfers.
Speaker 4 (05:05):
One is they go into the portal, you have a
need for them, and you recruit them. We did that
with Parco. There's other ways. When wrestlers want to leave
the program that they're currently in, they have good academic standing,
they meet progress toward a degree, we cannot recruit them,
(05:26):
and then they would choose to apply accept admission. If
they're admitted, and they would go that route. Really, anybody
with good academic standing that meets all of the progress
toward a degree can go anywhere at any time. The
(05:46):
rules have gotten so liberal that way. So to answer
your question, there's a lot of ways to transfer.
Speaker 3 (05:54):
There's a lot of ways to skin a.
Speaker 4 (05:59):
Can and I'll tell you that if certain personnel fit
our roster needs, we're open to it. I don't have
an opinion on whether or not that's good or not
good for.
Speaker 3 (06:15):
Athletics or not. We love it. The more that want
to be here, the merrier we love it.
Speaker 7 (06:22):
What is the key for a successful transfer, especially for
those who came from the program like Arizona State, where
I think.
Speaker 8 (06:29):
Zay Jones might be a lot different than the tom Brands.
So how does that work out?
Speaker 3 (06:33):
Seeing Jones is a worthy opponent. I can't.
Speaker 4 (06:37):
I got enough problems running my own program to try to,
you know, evaluate what's going on in his program.
Speaker 8 (06:46):
To you is what I'm saying as opposed to that's
not my concern.
Speaker 4 (06:50):
My concern is is the more the merrier. If you
want to be a Hawk, I'd be a Hawk. If
you don't, then you don't have to be. Nobody's twisting
your arm to stay here, and nobody's twisting your arm
to come here.
Speaker 3 (07:03):
Now.
Speaker 4 (07:04):
Recruiting is it's competitive. So maybe we'll, you know, work
a little harder on some of our better, bigger needs.
Speaker 3 (07:12):
We just had a recruiting weekend.
Speaker 4 (07:14):
Last weekend, we had a whole bunch of juniors in
and a whole bunch of high power juniors in, and
we got to do a good job, and we got
to do a good job in the portal, and we
got to do a good job wrestling uncommitted, unsigned seniors
in high school. So you're recruiting juniors in high school.
You're recruiting seniors in high school. Still, maybe you're gonna
(07:36):
look at the portal. You don't have a crystal ball,
you don't know what the portal is gonna look like,
but you're gonna look at the portal.
Speaker 3 (07:42):
That's gonna be interesting.
Speaker 4 (07:44):
You know, the week or day or whatever after the
the conference qualifier or the NCAA tournament, whatever that timeline is,
that's always interesting. And we're gonna we're gonna have a presence.
We're gonna do what the rules say we can do,
and we love it.
Speaker 8 (08:03):
Ben Peter announced the summer and he's focusing on this
simple times.
Speaker 5 (08:07):
He's got it right away this year.
Speaker 8 (08:09):
What then we expect from you.
Speaker 4 (08:10):
Know, the dead that term these people's First of all,
you've seen his progress through the trials process in early June,
making that U twenty team and then into the U
twenty Worlds as a heavyweight in the beginning of September,
so July August, September. That's three months, three months solely
(08:32):
dedicated to wrestling, and we love that progress. The biggest
thing with Ben Keeter is is he is a conscientious guy.
I think that's a good trait anytime, especially when you're young,
is that you want to make sure that your eyes
are dotted and your teaser crossed, meaning it's good enough,
(08:53):
just isn't going to cut it. And he looks for feedback.
He asks for feedback. He's mature in that regard, meaning
thick skinned to the point where if he's not asking
and he's getting feedback, he'll take it. He's a curious fellow,
(09:13):
very curious. We love him.
Speaker 2 (09:17):
What they have.
Speaker 3 (09:17):
Parker Teamer and a Kennan have it in your room.
They want to be here. There's energy.
Speaker 4 (09:25):
They all three have a different approach, but the similarities
are is just like I mean, we haven't even talked
about Drake Ayala. Drake Ayala is a runner up returning
in this program, moving up a wait and he's the
bedrock and so we're excited about that, and you asked
about Ben Keeter, but you know, we have another runner
up coming in as a transfer with teamer. But the
(09:47):
thing that those guys have that super competitive wrestlers or
athletes have is that they want to win. And the
good thing about the transfer portal is is if things
get stale where you're at, you can leave and nobody
can keep you out. So whether or not things were
stale where they were for whatever reason, we're the benefactor
(10:13):
of their decision to want to be an Iowaha gye.
Speaker 8 (10:17):
Looking at the lineup, there's only a much guy under
the one guy's staying at the same weight, and also
from that posseason lineuply other guys shifting, so there's a
lot of new So how would you kind of describe
I guess the vibe in the room. The culture was
so much new around the prostroom right now too.
Speaker 4 (10:31):
Vibe and culture in the room is something that you'll
have to come and see for yourself. I'm not going
to sit here and you know tell you that we
have great culture in a room.
Speaker 3 (10:41):
You figure that out for yourself. We you know what
we love.
Speaker 4 (10:50):
That when a guy makes a decision where they stay
at the same weight or going up A wait, he
makes that decision with conviction.
Speaker 3 (11:00):
We love that you can maybe move.
Speaker 4 (11:04):
Up into some uncharted territory and still be a dominant wrestler.
Drake Kayala has that opportunity. I mean, I'm not a
guy that makes predictions. You all know that in here.
I say that all the time. But if I was
making predictions, I don't think the weight class is going
to bother him moving up any time that happens. It's
(11:25):
attitude more than anything. And you know, I have some
mentors of my own, Royce Alger who moved up and
he did it for the good of the team. He
didn't move up because he was bigger. He went from
one sixty seven to one seventy seven his senior year
and he made a statement and was a two time
national champion two different weights. And so you do things
(11:46):
for different reasons. And when you do things with conviction,
it doesn't really matter that we don't have anybody returning
at the same weight class that they performed at.
Speaker 3 (11:57):
That could be a really good thing.
Speaker 5 (11:58):
Also have two one seven changing make classes one seven,
four one eight boys.
Speaker 6 (12:05):
Spot the lot of fans overaiz on where do those
two make classes stand as we see today and do
you expect that to change entering the season.
Speaker 4 (12:14):
We love Patrick Kennedy, who just got back from Albania.
We love Nelson Brands, We love Gabe Arnold, we love
who else aren't they talking about? Who aren't they talking about?
We love Angelo Ferrari, He's an eighty four pounder. We
love all four of those guys, and there's nothing wrong
with certain things out amongst friends.
Speaker 3 (12:35):
How's that?
Speaker 9 (12:37):
We love it?
Speaker 4 (12:37):
We love the competition.
Speaker 8 (12:39):
What do you liked by Angelo Ferraris so Parsons, you've
been here.
Speaker 4 (12:43):
I mean things that you could guess that all super
talented and driven young athletes, the characteristics that they have
and possess, and he's probably got them to a little
bit better degree. Can hear with the program, you know
a lot of time off and he's determined. He skewed
(13:07):
curves on his healing process. Our medical team is top notch.
He's a beneficiary of that and we're excited to see
him on the mat. We also have Colin Shriever there.
We're pretty deep at forty one. Jace Juice Rhodes is there,
(13:27):
I Bara Jesse Barra is there. He's up a weight.
He could probably go thirty three forty one. You know,
and sometimes you never know. You don't have a crystal ball,
so you never know. You could be surprised with you
know what happens.
Speaker 3 (13:42):
But writer Block.
Speaker 4 (13:45):
Love his approach every day, love his approach through his
strengthening and rehabbing or whatever you want to call it.
Speaker 3 (13:54):
And we're ready to go. We're going to Oregon State.
Speaker 4 (13:58):
We leave tomorrow and it will be his first competition
in a Hawkeye singleer even though you know as freshman
can wrestle on Hawkeye singlet's but you know he had
that issue.
Speaker 3 (14:10):
So he's excited.
Speaker 4 (14:11):
His family's excited, We're excited, the fans are excited. Hey,
take advantage of your opportunity outstude, don't look back, don't
look don't make this a quarterback controversy.
Speaker 8 (14:23):
You've got two four time Montana state champions on your roster,
and Laife and Keen wicking lathe do to kind of
help Keyan through the step up from a smaller popular stage.
Speaker 3 (14:32):
It's a long way from home and leave.
Speaker 4 (14:34):
Schroeder is an incredible leader in our room. You know,
I sack things that you know where he's paying attention
to the landscape and what student athletes are going for.
He's a voice. He's a voice for our team. He's
been a voice. He's been a great leader. He's doing
his student teaching right now. He's going to be a
great educator and mentor, and he's doing that with Kean
(14:59):
ke Hernandez has a sister in our program as well.
She just graduated last year. She's a manager for us,
has been, and she's still around working for the Hawkeye
Wrestling Club a little bit and doing a lot for us. Still,
we love her, We love the family, We love Keen
that he's here, and we just love everything. You know,
(15:20):
you ask about culture. Holy mackerel obviously sat up here
and talked about how much I love it, and so
it must be.
Speaker 3 (15:27):
Must be pretty good, Must be pretty good.
Speaker 8 (15:31):
I'm wanted to see from one hundred and twenty five dollars.
Speaker 3 (15:33):
This off season, we have seen that.
Speaker 4 (15:38):
Two are probably emerging, Cruz and Peterson. That's not a surprise.
Peterson had a procedure and he's come out well with that.
He's ten months post. We love his fire, we love
his drive, we love his pro coach. I don't know,
(16:03):
you know, if he's quite ready right now, but ten
minutes from now he could be ready. We love them both.
It will be competitive, and I think we listed both
of them on the on the Oregon State thing, but
more than likely it'll be cruise out of the gate
(16:23):
right away and then we'll see. We'll go from there
with Stanford, and then we'll go from there on the
next one, and then from there in the next one.
Speaker 8 (16:31):
Let's gone. Nelson Brandt's gone through a lot here.
Speaker 9 (16:33):
Honestly, when he knows.
Speaker 8 (16:34):
That has both a Koch and ex uncle, what you
see in him that's made him, they will continue after
all the time, I.
Speaker 3 (16:41):
See a guy that weathered a storm. I see a
guy that.
Speaker 4 (16:47):
Could have complained and took something and didn't really complain
and actually used his awesome humor and his personality and
actually made it work in its favor. I don't know
how you do that, but he did it, and good
(17:07):
for him. That was a bad, bad deal and we're
not going to get back into that. But I love
his resolve and his perseverance. And it's not something you
just snap your fingers. You wake up when day and say, hey,
is it's gonna bother me? I'm gonna do it. It
bothered him. I mean, it's you know, it's something that
(17:29):
you have to deal with when things come down the
path that way, and he, among others on our roster,
handled it very very well. And so hey, we're glad.
We're glad that he's you know, eligible on our team.
His leadership, his presence in the locker room, his popularity
with his teammates. He's a pretty popular guy and was
(17:51):
raised quite well by his mother, my sister in law.
Speaker 3 (17:56):
How's that?
Speaker 4 (17:58):
What are you looking for most?
Speaker 10 (18:00):
Just generally out of Saturday.
Speaker 4 (18:03):
We're looking to do what motivated wrestlers love to do,
and that's go out and take care of business at
every weight class. Doesn't mean it's going to be that easy.
It's an opportunity. It's the first opportunity. Even Stephen, you know,
you know, get up, gallop faster because it's your first one.
(18:29):
You know, we got to be even Steven steady, but
why not kick everybody but the whole way through the season.
Speaker 3 (18:35):
And that's what we're looking for. And we're going to put.
Speaker 4 (18:38):
Ten guys on the mat and we're gonna evaluate when
we're done, and then we're going to come back in
a week from Saturday, we got Stanford and then we
got balor Mine, and then we got Iowa State coming
to town, and then we go to Saint Louis for
a two dual thing, and then we got a little
bit of a break and we go to the Soldier
Salute and there are big Tens dual meet schedule starts,
and then we end with Oklahoma State home. We got
(19:01):
Ohio State at home. I mentioned Iowa States at home.
That's a decent home schedule, and then the Big Tens
are at Northwestern and the National Championships are in Philadelphia,
and it'll be like that.
Speaker 8 (19:15):
Talk about a winning mindset starting off the season, I
think Heater's.
Speaker 7 (19:18):
Obviously a guy is used to winning much other does,
especially under that.
Speaker 4 (19:22):
What have you learned from him in the past nine
to ten months in a couple of losses that he took.
Speaker 7 (19:27):
It's really good at moments that it may not be
a familiar.
Speaker 4 (19:30):
Experience without I learned what I described earlier, that he's conscientious.
Speaker 3 (19:38):
He seeks feedback.
Speaker 4 (19:40):
If he gets feedback that isn't like glowing report, he'll
eat it and take it and absorb it, and he
will use it and it will make him better. He
has thick skin that way, if you want to use
some humor, he's scared a death of his She's a
(20:01):
pretty tough woman. We love the fact that he is
full time wrestling, and we'll see where this goes after this.
This isn't something where you know, we're sitting here hoping
that we hang on to this, you know, through you know,
next year or whatever. Hey, the decision was made. All
(20:23):
parties were part of the decision making process, and after
this season we'll evaluate.
Speaker 3 (20:30):
We'll go from there.
Speaker 4 (20:31):
But I personally absolutely love that he is full time
wrestling since May June last spring. Love it today.
Speaker 8 (20:44):
The University of House guys sold out in the season.
Thinks for getting road we can talk about what it
means happens.
Speaker 4 (20:51):
Some out for the share Iowa Hawkeye wrestling is strong.
We have to do a better job performing. I think
if you put exciting teams on the mat, they will
be heralded and showered with affection by the fan base.
(21:13):
And since we sold out the arena again with season
ticket sales, you know what we tell our guys kind
of funny way, you know, when you're wrestling and it's
your turn to step on the mat, don't have that
the time that everybody gets out of their seat.
Speaker 3 (21:32):
And go goes and gets an ice cream cone.
Speaker 4 (21:36):
Have that the one where they nail themselves to the
seat because they don't want to miss one second of
your performance. And if we can get ten weight classes
with those types of competitors, we're going to be where
we need to be. So thanks, and we'll see it
in the restling rooms.
Speaker 6 (21:57):
Being in this environment just got my blood gone. I
just like, wow, I'm really here.
Speaker 11 (22:01):
What do you think that feel is gonna be like
for you the first time?
Speaker 3 (22:04):
You know, in two days when we step on.
Speaker 11 (22:05):
The mat in the.
Speaker 6 (22:08):
It's gonna be awesome. I mean, wrapping the black and gold,
it's gonna be cool. But I really can't wait till
we get to the home duels for real. That's gonna
be the big one.
Speaker 12 (22:17):
So what have people been kind of hyping up about
what Carver's like?
Speaker 5 (22:21):
Oh?
Speaker 6 (22:21):
Yeah, I mean I've seen I've seen pictures, I've seen
videos of how Rowdya gets. It reminds me of the
national stage and that's my perform my best. So I'm
just looking forward to that.
Speaker 13 (22:32):
What are your thoughts on wrestling a Big ten schedule?
Speaker 3 (22:35):
The difference is that that'll present.
Speaker 6 (22:38):
I mean, I don't think it would make too much
of a difference. You see Levo's going up too weight classes.
I feel like one fifty seven Big Tens will probably
be easier for me. So I'm just looking forward to
doing what I do and winning a Big Ten title.
Speaker 13 (22:55):
Would you take away from the national finals last year?
Speaker 3 (22:58):
What were your thoughts stepping off the man? Uh into
this season with you?
Speaker 6 (23:02):
I was definitely disappointed. I was kind of impaired, but
it's whatever, you know. I'm healthy, I'm ready to go,
and healthy Jacory is a hard Jacory to beat.
Speaker 1 (23:15):
So thanks, thank you.
Speaker 6 (23:21):
I missed some of that.
Speaker 5 (23:21):
So yeah, real quickly here, I mean, what made you
want to.
Speaker 14 (23:24):
Come to Olive.
Speaker 6 (23:25):
Just the atmosphere, man, this is my last year. I
wrestled in the Pac twelves. Everyone will call that the
easier division, So coming over here to the Big Tens,
I'm just looking forward to the big crowds, big events
all throughout the year. It's my last rodeo, so I
just wanted to be epic every single duel.
Speaker 5 (23:44):
What have you you know since last March?
Speaker 7 (23:46):
What have you worked on the most?
Speaker 5 (23:48):
What will get.
Speaker 6 (23:50):
Riding on top. Riding on top is big and then
my conditioning, my paces will be higher. So looking forward
to putting points on the board.
Speaker 10 (23:57):
Thanks.
Speaker 5 (23:58):
Thank You.
Speaker 15 (24:00):
Don't have any bad blood, right, like when you wrest
on the mat, it's your enemies, not enemies, but your
your opponent is in front of you. But there's no
bad blood ever, and whoever is the best guy for
the situation will figure out who the best guy is
for the situation.
Speaker 12 (24:15):
Is that a mindset you think you've always had or
did maybe going with Marinelli and Cameron or you mentioned
that that kind of hope instill that in view?
Speaker 7 (24:20):
Is Hey, when I'm the older guy, you know, maybe
this is this is how I can how.
Speaker 8 (24:24):
I can be.
Speaker 3 (24:25):
I think it's just a mindset for sure.
Speaker 15 (24:27):
I don't think it's not really about the older guys, right,
it's about whoever's the best guy for the job at
that particular year, at that particular duel, et cetera. So
I don't know, I don't think I that's a good question.
I don't think I really learned that from the older guys,
but I definitely had my place back then.
Speaker 9 (24:46):
Thanks.
Speaker 5 (24:49):
Are you ready to go here another run at this?
Speaker 10 (24:51):
Yeah?
Speaker 9 (24:51):
Ready to go.
Speaker 15 (24:52):
I'm an old man, so keep keep being recovered and
keep getting sleep and have fun.
Speaker 5 (24:57):
Do you notice a difference I mean from what was
it six seven years ago to now? I mean physically
you feel it more.
Speaker 15 (25:04):
After practice, or maybe maybe not. I probably feel it
the same. I just don't recover as fast. And I
think that learning how to recover when you're older is huge.
And I was just talking about earlier is sleep is
so is so key. And I used to think I
didn't need sleep, and you need sleep.
Speaker 3 (25:18):
You need a lot of it.
Speaker 15 (25:19):
So getting that diet right and getting that sleep right
is so huge.
Speaker 5 (25:23):
Obviously a frustrating year off, But I mean, did I
give you a greater appreciation for where you're at here
in this moment?
Speaker 3 (25:33):
Yes?
Speaker 15 (25:33):
I I prepare the same no matter what. So getting
this break, maybe maybe it was good, maybe.
Speaker 3 (25:40):
It wasn't good.
Speaker 15 (25:40):
We'll see, but I definitely think that I will prepare
the same whether I had that year last year or
whether I wrestled this year. Except you know, it just goes,
it spirals down, So prepare the same no matter what.
Speaker 3 (25:54):
Thanks, thank you.
Speaker 1 (25:59):
So expud get out there.
Speaker 8 (26:00):
I know you came up short, but what did it do?
Speaker 3 (26:02):
To help you the most for this year.
Speaker 7 (26:04):
Oh well, I mean in the finals, I wrestled the
number four in guy in the World Seniors. Like everybody
saw it was uh, it was good. Just kind of
showed me that I'm right there with everybody in that
I'm wait, doesn't really matter and.
Speaker 13 (26:15):
What was the final decision why you gave up football
for this?
Speaker 7 (26:18):
Just like when I made that World team this summer,
it made it made it a lot easier to just
wrestle this year. And I just figured with Jay coming
back and I'm not going to be being there too much,
which is perfectly fine, and he's doing his thing, so
I figured I just wrestle this year.
Speaker 14 (26:32):
Yeah, where's the.
Speaker 13 (26:34):
Biggest area of balth that you've experienced since the spring?
Speaker 7 (26:38):
I'd say my wait. Honestly, I weighed to eighteen at
World Team trials and I'm two thirty five right now.
So just getting up and wait, and these guys do
a really good job of it. I mean, I have
to make sure I'm waiting something every day. And if
I'm not waiting that though, send me back up in
the room and make sure I'm waiting what I need
to wain.
Speaker 13 (26:55):
But yeah, I notice you still have the same agility.
Speaker 7 (27:00):
Yeah, yeah, I mean I'm not getting fad or anything
like that, but they just want me to kind of
build that muscle and build that weight in order to
wrestle or any dresslet heavyweight.
Speaker 3 (27:09):
But yeah, what we remember well about playing football?
Speaker 7 (27:13):
Uh, honestly, the guys I made a lot of really good,
h good relationships last year and that was probably my
favorite part.
Speaker 6 (27:19):
Is the plan still to rejoin?
Speaker 7 (27:22):
Ye yep, that's the plan. I'm gonna go back in
the spring. I think I have to go back in
the summer because it doesn't really doesn't work like that,
so I have to start back up in the summer.
Speaker 12 (27:29):
Yeah, that's pa after spring prak.
Speaker 7 (27:31):
Yeah, after spring ball, and then I'll I'll probably go
after after NCAA is I'll probably go sit in and
on the meetings and stuff. But I can't like factors technically.
Speaker 13 (27:39):
Is it good to just be focusing on one thing?
Speaker 7 (27:42):
Yeah, it feels pretty good. It's uh, it's exciting. It's
kind of the I was joking with my parents about this,
like the first time I've ever really done this. Ever
since I started playing sports, I was always onto something
and thinking about multiple different things. So it's it feels
pretty good to just kind of focus on one thing
for now. Have you been watching for Oh yeah, I'm yeah,
I'm rooming with football players, so I still I'm still
(28:04):
in the loop with everything that's going on. So yeah,
what is it just like watching it? I mean I
didn't play last year, so it's I mean it's the
same thing pretty much, just I don't get to be
on the field on Saturdays when it's home. So but yeah,
let's got a ton of watch exciting.
Speaker 13 (28:20):
It's been like kind of sharing this wrestling journey with
Dave from your senior year last year. Will they or
won't they finish the season in the lineup to now
being full boar?
Speaker 7 (28:30):
For me, yeah, it's exciting. Game is probably my best friends,
so it's it's fun to come in here and grind
with him and then go hang out and eat food
with him after and so it's it's just kind of
fun to see where his wrestling's going and where my
wrestling is going.
Speaker 3 (28:43):
So it's a black ops black house player.
Speaker 7 (28:47):
So we all played last night actually, and I got
a lot of work to do. I found out I'm
not that good. I'd say Nelson Brands is probably the
best black OPS player for sure.
Speaker 13 (28:56):
Keeve has an advantage on you in that field.
Speaker 7 (28:58):
No, I'm way better than Gabe. I'll be game in
anything we do. But Nelson is probably the best best
I of wrestling black OPS player.
Speaker 12 (29:05):
Then, I'm assuming has proven to be one of the
best guys in the world.
Speaker 3 (29:09):
Yeah, the rubble, you got your hands on him, you
took him down.
Speaker 5 (29:12):
What were the major takeaways from that match?
Speaker 7 (29:15):
Twenty Yeah, I tall you. The biggest thing that I'm
frustrated with is I guess my mindset going into that match.
I mean, I never go into a match thinking I'm
gonna lose, but most matches I'm going in thinking I'm
going to dominate, And that match was more of Okay,
I need to manage this and do what I can
when I can, and so just talking with Coach Brands,
just kind of working on a new mindset and figuring
that out. But yeah, I mean it's it shows that
(29:37):
I'm right there and I just got to keep working
on little things and I'll be right there.
Speaker 12 (29:41):
What does that do for your long term thought process?
Speaker 10 (29:44):
Twenty twenty eight.
Speaker 7 (29:45):
Maybe, Yeah, I mean, obviously it shows that I'm I'm
there at the best wrestler in the world. So I
just kind of I mean, twenty twenty eight is a
long ways away, so I'm more worried about Saturday or
in state for sure. But yeah, I mean it's it's
always in the picture. But yeah, just I'm just focused
on what's next.
Speaker 12 (30:02):
Last year, you were obviously batting both football and wrestling,
and now you finally get to wrestle day one fully
investied in wrestling.
Speaker 8 (30:09):
What's kind of the difference, shape.
Speaker 5 (30:11):
Wise or just mindset was.
Speaker 7 (30:13):
This, Oh, I gotta wrestle all summer and then off
all of them wrestling too, So my shape is probably
the best it's ever been, I would say with these
coach brands practices. So yeah, it's I feel great, my
weights out, my my wrestling is getting better. That's that's
probably the most important thing. But uh, yeah, I toad
the biggest thing. Last year. It was just I never
my body never got a break. Right after Bowl game,
(30:34):
I came home and started wrestling practice, and then right
after NCA's I started springing ball, So just never really
got a break. And then I got a good break
after I made the world team this summer and then
so yeah, it's just feels good to be focused on
one thing for now.
Speaker 3 (30:48):
You got a taste of action last year.
Speaker 12 (30:50):
I mean, what does that experience kind of.
Speaker 4 (30:53):
Give you a little bit more for this year?
Speaker 2 (30:55):
Uh?
Speaker 7 (30:55):
Yeah, I mean it's it's just wrestling, no matter it's
I guess the only thing that's different is the location.
Speaker 15 (31:00):
I guess.
Speaker 7 (31:01):
So it's it's to me, it doesn't matter if I'm
wrestling in Carver, Hawky, or if I'm wrestling in Spain
or Penn State orherever. It's just it's it's just wrestling,
no matter what. But that was good to get my
hands on college level guys, I would say.
Speaker 10 (31:13):
So you helped them with fixed sel to the next level.
Speaker 13 (31:17):
You know, a lot of all Americans coming back, some
fresh faces in the lineup as well. Is this scheme
poised for a big runs? It's a team that has
some national championship potential.
Speaker 5 (31:30):
Yeah, of course.
Speaker 10 (31:31):
I mean I think it'd be silly to say no,
But yeah, I mean we have we have a lot
of guys who can really get it done this year,
you know, not just not just placing high, but winning it.
Speaker 15 (31:41):
Thank you, Michael, How are you good?
Speaker 6 (31:47):
Here?
Speaker 5 (31:47):
Two?
Speaker 2 (31:47):
Here?
Speaker 5 (31:47):
I mean, does it feel the same does it feel different?
Speaker 6 (31:50):
Are you more comfortable?
Speaker 13 (31:51):
Is it just wrestling?
Speaker 10 (31:53):
Yeah, it took the words out of my mouth. I
was gonna say I was more comfortable, but uh but yeah,
I mean it is at them. They just wrestling and
continuing to take advantage of my resources.
Speaker 3 (32:03):
And yeah, you guys put in a.
Speaker 11 (32:05):
Lot of work.
Speaker 5 (32:06):
When you get to be a couple of days away
from the start of the season, our an extra excitement,
urgency focus or is it you know one day to
time you know that you.
Speaker 10 (32:17):
Well, you know, we always talk about like we're training
a year round. You know, there really isn't even though
like we're not competing, there really is in an offseason,
like we're always ready to compete. So it's just kind
of the same mindset it is as it's been during
the summer.
Speaker 5 (32:32):
Frank's not here, Does that feel different?
Speaker 3 (32:35):
Yeah?
Speaker 10 (32:36):
I miss Jared. I mean, Jared's my boys, so but yeah,
I mean getting more comfortable with the other guys obviously,
but you know when I was coming here with Jared
has made it a lot easier. But yeah, I mean,
like I said, I missed Jared.
Speaker 5 (32:50):
A new wrestling facility here, I mean, what are your
takeaways after a couple of months.
Speaker 10 (32:55):
Yeah, I like it kind of feels like the batcave.
So I really got to say about it environment.
Speaker 14 (33:01):
But you come in here and they treat you like family.
You know they're there, they care about you, just not
like the wrestler piece, but also the guy who's off
the mat enough.
Speaker 3 (33:11):
So what's your first impression of Keeter? Saw him in
the room and then once you got your hands on him,
Oh man, let me see my person.
Speaker 14 (33:20):
Uh, he was just big, he was strong, and then
when I wrestled him, he was stronger, faster, better than
what I expected. But it's it's good to have him
as a practice partner to you know, even if I'm
like a pumpling dummay, it's it's good.
Speaker 5 (33:36):
To have him.
Speaker 7 (33:37):
So what make this right little for you?
Speaker 14 (33:41):
I think it's just completed a lot of things in
my mind, just trying to become the best wrestler I
want to be. These guys, I mean I had twelve
coaches throughout my entire career, and these guys know what
they're talking about. I mean, I've had great coaches, but
they're fixing things that I thought were right the entire time.
(34:03):
And I think it's gonna make me the best best
I've been.
Speaker 9 (34:09):
As on champ obviously, just I know, I want, I want,
I want to be, you know, out there fighting. I
want to show the people that I'm you know, I'm
good at wrestling. It's been a while since I've gotten
to show somebody that I'm good at wrestling. So I
think I'm just really looking forward to that, just being
out there and you know, being in the moment.
Speaker 6 (34:29):
For this moment.
Speaker 9 (34:30):
Uh yeah, I think so, I hope so, uh yeah,
maybe a little bit bigger of a moment now than
at the gym in Waverley, But yeah, it definitely helped
me a lot of people when Waverley helped me in
a lot of ways.
Speaker 12 (34:42):
It's the new one in terms of the high freshman
transfers brought Eastville room. Are they people who kind of
look up to like look at their national ranking or
do you kind of make sure everyone is honestly, Probably.
Speaker 9 (34:56):
You know, it's about It's it's kind of cool. I
was telling my had this a while ago, like some
of these guys that you've been watching since high school, Like,
I mean, Parko was an All American when I was
a sophomore in high school. Or something like that, and
then last week I'm wrestling him in practice and I'm
I mean, I'm holding my own. So it's really just,
I would say, just kind of getting to know him
(35:18):
and then fitting in with everybody. But it's fun having
like the guys that are that level here the whole time,
and then you know you want to be as high
a level as them.
Speaker 3 (35:26):
So you got to keep up.
Speaker 12 (35:28):
They say, at least told us like I came to
because I want to win a national championship? What does
it mean to be from a state where this is
kind of the mecha of wrestling? And also like, do
you feel you have the tools in the toolbox to
do it? To go from fifth place in a national.
Speaker 9 (35:41):
Champion Yeah, for sure. I mean we wouldn't be here
if we didn't think we could, so we're obviously gonna
give it everything we got. And then you know, guys
like Jacory and Parko and Buchanan their easy, seamless fits
in the lineup and they make it a lot more
fun here. You know, Jacorey is goofy, He's really fun
to be around, and everybody else too. It's just I
(36:01):
think we got I mean, yeah, we're gonna try.
Speaker 3 (36:04):
It's gonna be.
Speaker 6 (36:05):
Gonna fight for it.
Speaker 3 (36:06):
Yeah, to see last year didn't go my mindset.
Speaker 16 (36:13):
I gotta take one step higher on that podium, right.
I got second last year, so I'm excited to Uh.
I'm excited to go out there dominating. A big thing
for me is scoring points. I got to score points.
And when I do that, I wrestle like Drake, I
l good things happen. So how do you see you
progress over the last year. I guess we're gonna find out.
I had a long summer at a good summer. I
got a lot of good experiences. I went to Turkey,
(36:35):
I went to Paris, I U I did a lot
of wrestling.
Speaker 3 (36:38):
I did a lot of traveling. And I'm excited.
Speaker 11 (36:40):
I don't know.
Speaker 16 (36:41):
I'm at a new weight. I'm excited to score points.
Speaker 13 (36:45):
Tom said, a move like that usually comes down more
mental than anything to have success.
Speaker 15 (36:51):
Yeah, you do.
Speaker 13 (36:51):
You see the scene that it's just more mental over
physical and technical.
Speaker 3 (36:56):
When you make a jump like that, you're saying up
a eight yeah to thy three?
Speaker 8 (37:01):
Yeah.
Speaker 16 (37:01):
I mean, And like I said, I haven't competed at
that weight yet, so it's kind of hard for me
to talk about it. But the thing is is I
told the reporter earlier, is I'm moving up to weight
I'm not. I'm not moving up a way to throw
my hat in the ring, you know, I'm I'm moving
up a waight to win a national title. So I
think I got a good mindset going in, and you know,
I'm excited. I'm excited to prove it on the map.
Speaker 13 (37:20):
Some more new faces, how everybody can gel.
Speaker 11 (37:24):
In, coming together, felling great. It's gonna be a funny year,
new weight class a little bit. So that's a change,
but I'm excited. I'm looking forward to it.
Speaker 12 (37:37):
So the new transfers as well as a lot of
highly TA freshmen, what have the answers?
Speaker 11 (37:44):
Nothing but good things. I mean, having guys on this team.
You know, whether it's new guys, it doesn't matter. Just
we're all a team at the end of the day,
you know, So everyone coming together, and you know, I
think the guys that we brought in or some not
only are they great wrestlers, but the great great guys
off the map you can and team mar Parko, all
the freshmen, Ferrari, Boonovich Ill, all those guys. You know,
(38:06):
So even in the short amount of time that we've
had together thus far, it still feels like we're a
family going into this first duel. So I'm looking forward
to that.
Speaker 13 (38:14):
Are you locked in at eighty four?
Speaker 14 (38:16):
Is that long term?
Speaker 11 (38:17):
I don't know.
Speaker 13 (38:17):
I mean, we'll see, we'll see. You know, it's not
my choice.
Speaker 11 (38:22):
I mean, it is a little bit my choice, but
you know, at the end of the day, it's what
the man upstairs wants. So you know, right now, I'm
at eighty four because that's where I feel like I
can give my best contribution to this team, and you
know that's what I'm gonna do. So you know, it's
obviously we good guys at the weight. We got Ferrari
still there, you know on there as well. You know,
maybe we wrestle off I stayed there. Maybe we not,
but we'll see how it goes, you know. So I'm
(38:43):
looking forward to, you know, this weekend at one eighty four,
and uh, we'll see how it goes from there.
Speaker 12 (38:47):
So he dabbled at one eighty. Well, last year, what
was kind of that initial experience like.
Speaker 3 (38:51):
That can kind of crack you for this year.
Speaker 11 (38:53):
Yeah, last year I think I felt a little undersize,
you know, I was making seventy four consistently, I wasn't
too big for the wait for eighty four, and you know,
I just it was more of a thing of the
team needed me. So that's where I was, you know
what I mean. So this year, coming into it seventy
four is a little bit of a struggle. I'm not
gonna lie, but you know, I feel pretty strong. I'm
(39:14):
pretty solid at eighty four. I'm not the tallest guy
in the world.
Speaker 5 (39:17):
You know.
Speaker 11 (39:17):
I like to joke around and say I'm about six foot,
but I'm probably a solid five seven with eight hours
of sleep, So especially when I eat my weedies, then
I'm like five seven and a half and that's what
really matters. So yeah, but you know, I'm I'm I'm
embracing all the challenges that are gonna come my way.
Whether it be a eighty four, seventy four, maybe twenty five,
you know, it doesn't matter, you know, So whenever challenges
come my way, if that's what needs to be taken
(39:38):
care of, that's the goal, the job ahead.
Speaker 7 (39:41):
So I'm gonna do what I have to do.
Speaker 5 (39:42):
You gotta locker room that's full of a lot of stuffs,
But who's kind of stuck out to you this offseason.
Speaker 11 (39:48):
Everybody, man, I mean, it's hard to really pinpoint one guy,
you know, doing all the work.
Speaker 16 (39:52):
You know.
Speaker 11 (39:52):
I think this team is full of a bunch of
guys who are ready to win a national title, whether
they're the starting ten or they're the back ten, and
it doesn't matter, you know. I think all however, many
guys we got on this roster can win a national title.
Speaker 7 (40:04):
And that's not just that doesn't just.
Speaker 11 (40:06):
Come from bias and belief. That just comes from watching
the work that we put in on a daily basis,
you know, and seeing what these guys are capable of.
Speaker 1 (40:14):
