We all can use some training toget better. Take a training class to
be prepared with range Ready. Visitrange ready studios dot com to see our
class schedule. So you've made itthrough three hours of the regular show on
(00:25):
terrestrial radio and you wanted a littlebit more. So that's why you found
the Gun Talk After Show podcast wherewe saved all the best things that we
can't say on regular radio. Nowhere's Tom, Michelle and Jim for the
Gun Talk After Show. It's timefor the after show and hold a cow.
Guys. We kind of had tocall an audible and go a different
direction today, didn't we. Somethinghappened. Yeah, Slow news Day,
(00:48):
Slow Newsday. Yeah, we're inthe middle. I actually just started the
show and we're interviewing Amanda Suphracle, who was at the Republican National Convention this
week, giving us a report onthat. And while she's talking, the
news breaks that Joe Biden announced ushe's not going to run for president.
(01:10):
By the way, we've got JimKenzie and Michelle Cleveland over here. This
is the after show. So atthat point, guys, we were kind
of stopped talking about everything else wehad planned, and we had to talk
about that. Yeah, no kidding, So it's a bit to talk about.
Yeah, yeah, so uh,I mean right now as we're speaking
right now. The problem is peopleif they hear this like two days from
(01:30):
now, some of this is goingto be old news by then we may
know. Does you know Kamala Harrisend up running? I think she has
to, don't. They have topick her. Well, they have to
to be able to spend the moneythey've collected already, the campaign money is
my understanding of that. And soif they were to do that and then
(01:52):
run news him as her VP,then she, you know, in a
few months either goes to full term, then he's upped. I think they
would find a way to get ridof her and bump him into place in
four years. In less years.Well, if she's elected, she actually
if she loses, then whoever theypick s her VP running mate would be
(02:14):
in prime position for the slot torun in four years against JD. Evans.
Just get the popcorn ready right. As united as they are, it's
going to be a Hyaena moment,I feel. But what you hyenas moving
in on a kill? Oh okay, okay, I got you reading each
(02:36):
other apart the devil's advocate side ofme on that says, the problem we
could have is Sony, Oh he'sgonna win for sure, I'm not going
to vote. I don't have toget out and vote. We wouldn't you
rather to be part of it anddo about that. People going to say,
well, you know Trump's said he'she's up by four points? Is
that by five points? We don'thave to vote, and all of a
sudden trying to go, wow, what happened? Yeah, he lost because
(02:57):
you sat at home. We've neverhad that before. No vote, Well,
and you know hunters and shooters areterrible about not voting. Oh it's
November, I'm hunting. It's November. I got things going on. Really,
shut the hell up, would youplease? It really blows my mind
that there's a number out there ofover two million people that are not registered
(03:22):
that are pro gun that we knowof, right, that we know of.
I'll bet you it's ten million, easily, it might be. I
don't know. It's just you know, people who could be boring. Hey,
look before he gets so bored withthis, he didn't want to talk.
Let's grab brandt out of is thatwyoming? Yeah, where we're going,
Hey, Brent, Uh, Ilive in Wyoming. I'm heading to
(03:45):
Butte, Montana. Oh okay,I got you. I wanted to talk
about the influence you have on people. Uh, it's only taken a couple
of decades, but one I'm warmingup to the quarterboard a bit because my
favorite boar that I've I've had youknow, uh since the mid eighties has
been to six point five and that'sjust too crowded now. So now I'm
(04:09):
gonna I'm going to move to thetwenty five cow, and people that have
probably been in the twenty five cowsince the mid eighties are going to be
mad at me for making their youknow, for crowding up their idea all
along. But that's not why Icalled. I am on my way to
my first training class. Other thanconcealed carry training and military training, I
(04:32):
am on my way to my firsttraining class for a long range rifle class.
Really well, tell me about it. What rifle and what kind of
shit are you going to be doing? Uh? It's out to one thousand
and I picked Butte because it's roughlythe same elevation as my house. It's
roughly at five thousand feet and takinga true seven hundred with a Lilgia and
(04:59):
of course it's a same five. It's a two sixty four wind mag Oh
interesting, Okay, Now I didn'tI didn't load it real hot. I
loaded it somewhat light because the weatherI loaded them all. I loaded all
the AMMO up for it the lasttwo days and the weather for next week
(05:19):
or this week, and Butte isgoing to be in the nineties. So
it's like, yeah, I don'tI don't need to beat myself up with
three hundred rounds of full tilt loadsand I don't need to, you know,
stress the gun with getting hot AMMOand shooting pressure. Yeah. Yeah,
So I it's I'm running thirty onehundred feet per sec and it's about
(05:43):
sixty five oh six velocity, whichis fine with me. Well, bullet,
it's a one thirty grain norma goldentarget, and I'm running I'm running
a surplus fifty bmg powder. It'sWC eight sixty. What is the beast
on that bullet? Five forty eight. I mean, that's not super high,
(06:08):
but it's probably fine for what you'redoing. Why are you taking this
class? What motivates you to finallydo this? I cannot dope the wind
to save my life. So I'mhoping that the longest shot I've taken on
game was with this rifle. Ikept my range finder, kept hitting the
(06:32):
haystack behind the antelope, and thehaystack was at five oh five, but
the antelope was probably thirty yards thisside of that. So that was the
longest shot I've taken on game withit. And I was I thought I
was comfortable until the animal, untilthe antelope was in my crosshairs, and
then my adrenaline flows and I cansee my heartbeat, and I just I
(06:55):
was like, well, I'm takingthe shot, but it needed a finishing
shot. When how many days isthis class? It's all weak until Thursday
Thursday after wow? Wow. Youknow what it would really be cool is
(07:15):
if you could call us back afteryou take the class and give us a
full range report on not only howit went, but how much you learned
or how much you progressed through theclass. That would be cool to hear.
Okay, I'll do that. Yeah. I normally listened to the podcast,
but it just so happened today Iwas in Billings, driving through Billings
(07:36):
and I could catch you live.So I'm listening live, all right,
I'm gonna switch back to your goingto the quarterboar world. She had twenty
five caliber? What cartridge? Andwhere are you going with that? Okay?
Well, I've had a two fiftyseven Roberts Actlee for a number of
(07:57):
years. I got another Savage intwenty five oh six that I've I've taken
a couple of antelope with that, and then just probably in the last year,
I've either commissioned custom builds or orhave bought twenty five caliber rifles like
their like their nuts. I boughta two fifty seven, whether it be
(08:22):
on a how or on a Vanguardaction. I bought let's see, I
picked up a Montana rifle company thathad uh now, it was a poorly
performing two seventy short mag and Iended up having a smith put a twenty
five gap barrel on it. SoI'm gonna be I'm gonna run a twenty
(08:46):
I haven't. I haven't inletted thewood for that one yet, so I
haven't shot that one. I hada buddy talk me into he had the
Reamer, and so he talked meinto doing a twenty five unpacked buckbuster,
which is basically a two fifty sevenRoberts Acte shortened up two hundred thousands.
(09:11):
I think actually it's shortened up.It's either shortened up or two oh one.
I forget what it is. Somewherearound two hundred. You do realize
how goofy this is at this point, right, Oh, it's an obsession.
Obsession. I mean, I thoughtI was bad. Man, You're
(09:31):
making me feel good. The lastone I just did is I picked up
a twenty five GPC, which is, uh, that's for an ar platform.
That's a six point eight SPC case. Uh, necked up and improved
or necked down and improved a twentyfive cow. All I have to say
(09:52):
for you is seek help. Yes. Now. The thing is, you
know, the drill will twenty fivecaliber cartridges and bullets, is that there
really is not much in the wayof good long range high BC bullets generally
speaking. And that's primarily because there'snot much out there in factory guns that
(10:16):
has a high enough twist rate totake advantage of it. So I'm assuming
at this point, because you're buildingcustom rifles, you are going with a
higher twist rate and using some ofthe rarer high BC bullets and twenty five
caliber. Yeah, the ones whereI'm buying all the barrels. If I'm
buying the gun, it's usually aten twist. But if I'm buying the
barrels to put on the gun,it's an eight twist. And maybe they
(10:39):
do. I think somebody might beex Caliber is making a seven and a
half twist, and maybe some otherones are making a seven and a half.
But I don't see any reason togo heavier than one hundred and thirty
five grains. If I need togo more than one hundred and thirty five,
I'll go to sixty five. Butthat was the same way with the
six to five back in the mideighties. Your your bullet of choice with
(11:01):
a Remington, I mean that waswhat Oh yeah, First, the first
custom gun I had commission to havebuilt that I built around that bullet.
I was like, I want toshoot this bullet. Throwed it out this
far to the second candler. Theyhad two candlers on them. I seated
it out to the second counter.I said, throwed it out to this
and that was your choice of bulletback then. Now the six five is
(11:26):
flooded with good bullets. Yeah, that changed, so much time. Time
for me to leave, I'll goto the twenty five caliber. Well,
look, good luck on the school. I think it's fabious you're going to
take this class, and you're right. Learning to read the wind and shoot
in the wind is the thing, especially since you live in Wyoming where you
know, it's like that old jokethe guy says, you know, does
(11:48):
a wind blow this way all thetime? The guy says, now,
sometimes it blows the other way.So I mean that's Wyoming. So but
yeah, do this. Do usa favor. After the class, whether
it's the next under your sometime, give us a call back and let us
know how it went, what youlearned, and if you think you're a
better shooter. Fair enough, Hey, Brent, thank you for the call.
(12:09):
Appreciate that, sir. Wow,that guy is ate up with twenty
five, isn't he? He isubsessed. You might have gotten into the
geeky woods a little bit. Wemay have gone down into the rabbit hole
of gun geekering. Uh huh,Yes, you need that every once in
a while. Well, all thosethings matter, especially when you're doing long
(12:33):
range. Well that's it. Itall matters, doesn't it. It sure
does. And he's got some nicefresh ammo to go and try. Yeah,
well, what would you or anybodyin your family know about long range
shooting? Come on, she's justshooting in generally. She had just left
it there. Yes, you guysreally should get into this whole sport.
You know, we just started understandingsome of this stuff. What did he
(12:54):
say, just not only you marriedto you produced one of the better shooters
out there when it comes to longrange shooting. So there you go.
So well that was fun. Iguess I was the influence on him on
the twenty five calibers because I talkabout those a good bit. I likes
(13:18):
the two fifty seven weather. Theproblem is that, like I said,
the real issue is bullets. Igrew up in an era when high velocity
was how you got long range.Yes, and that's simply not true.
It's hard for gray hair folks likeme to get over that thinking. And
now you could have a lower velocitycartridge with a high ballistical efficient bullet that
(13:43):
shoots much better. Not flatter, because flat doesn't really matter. But he
mentioned it's the wind and those highBC bullets they could cut your wind drift
in half, and that is enormous. Well, now, doesn't that also
equate to even though the maybe travelingslower your the bullet maybe trailing slower your
(14:05):
impact, it has more energy onimpact even though it's going slower than a
faster Yes, a good point. They don't give up. Energy is fast.
They don't slow to lose a velocityis fast. So you could actually
and we you know, you canrun the numbers of this. It's kind
of fun. Same cartridge, twodifferent bullets, and you can start them
off two hundred feet per second differentlyin velocity, and the high b C
(14:26):
bullet will match the velocity of thelower BC bullet somewhere in the five hundred
yard range, and after that it'sdoing even better and drifting a good bit
less the whole time. Yeah, science, Michelle, wake up. You
know why she's feigning to be snoringbecause she already knows all this. I'm
(14:50):
going with the Joe Biden because i'dlike to do that. I'm filling in
for Camel, thank you. Arewe going to miss him? We haven't
missed him so far, and hehasn't really been there, so it's a
oh, well, you know,he's he's just it's in the best interest
(15:15):
of his party and country, nothis country, and Franklin for him,
for him personally, for his health, not necessarily for his family, who
are a bunch of ego maniac powermads, elder users and felons, and
(15:37):
all of them have been selling outhis position and selling out the country for
decades. He's never held a realjob. He has simply sold out his
position to foreign agents and foreign countries. And I think he is a crook
of the worst kind. So Iwon't miss him slightly. And the problem
is they're going to replace him withsomebody just as bad. Well, I
(16:00):
have a caller here wants to goover a list of his accomplishments in his
near fifty years in public service.Go for it. Yeah, that sums
it up. Thank you, caller, I thank you. Have to figured
that out pretty much. Break here. When we come back, we have
a guest that we want to bringon the air. How's that? Oh?
I can't wait. There's more tothis world of guns than you realize.
(16:37):

That's gun talk dot com. Okay, we're back from the break where we're
(17:10):
moving microphones and headsets and everything else. Because Jim, you have brought in
a ringer. I have a soonto be novice who's got a ton of
interest in shooting, and mom anddad said it's cool to do it.
So I figure're gonna take her shooting. I'm gonna take her shooting this week.
We're gonna start off. We're actuallygonna start with a bb gun all
right, and I'm gonna let youdo the intro introduction. Here, ladies
(17:30):
and gentlemen, please welcome the shootingworld's newest prodigy. Solely Hello, I
tell me back to yourself. Startoff with how old you are. I'm
about to turn eleven tomorrow, Julytwenty second, Happy birthday. Thank you.
Okay, So have you shot before? No? Never? Oo fun.
(17:52):
Okay, So what are you doingthere? And you know, why
are you hanging out with Jim anyway? Just to see what he's up to.
No, I'm up here visiting mymom. Excellent. So all right,
so you've been running around the studiothere. Yeah, and I guess
you're right there with Michelle. Whatdo you want to do as far as
shooting whatever? My teacher tells me, Jim, what are you going to
do? I'm thinking water jugs andcheetos, had all kinds of stuff to
(18:15):
shoot, and when you hit it, it's not so much fun. But
she starts with me, beef, well, we're gonna start with something else
way before we even get to hardwaresafety. Whoa good job? Bamn,
bam. I don't know. Ikind of like just closed my eyes and
pulled you silly. She's smart. She's a really really smart kid, and
(18:37):
she's uh, she's got interest. She saw how the show worked and some
of the questions she was asking meprior to set up. You know,
you show somebody a concept to explainsomething, you think they either grasp it
or they don't. She's asking followup questions that this kid's a genius.
Yeah, I'm pretty sure she waswanting to take over your job. I
think she will matter, in fact, not next Sunday off time. I
got Actually, Jim, while youwere out, we kind of took a
(19:00):
I'm sorry you're out in the bestinterest of the radio party. That's right,
that's right, and the country Ifigure, I figure, if we
if we give her a chance tolearn safe shooting, the fun part is
just gonna happen. Yep. Andshe's at the perfect age. Tom,
you and I discussed it a littlebit early. Give me your take on
that again. Well, there's there'sthis wonderful age. I called it eight
(19:22):
to eleven or twelve. I mean, look when kids, you know,
and we've been doing with our kidsand have grandkids, when they hit puberty,
it things change and they kind oflose their minds and they get you
know, tend to get sullen andall. But at Soley's age, it's
perfect because they're concentrated, they're payingattention and solely actually, you're still a
lot of fun at this age.In about two years, you're not gonna
be that much fun anymore. I'msing, Okay, that's how it's gonna
(19:47):
be. Uh yeah, I seethat. Yeah, And then you get
to be funny after a while, you know. But some of those teenage
years, it's like, oh,who is this person? Oh my god?
Yeah, I think I'm just gonnasay how I am good? Call?
Wouldn't that be nice? So Michelle, do you have any I mean,
you've been through this drill, anysuggestions or thoughts. Well, I
(20:08):
think, Jim, you're on theright page. Obviously, safety, there's
some rules you have to learn beforeyou even get out there. But I
think the BB gun is perfect, perfect introduction, and then going into you
know, BB public gun and thenworking into a twenty two side for her
and then great, probably step upto howitzer or something. Yeah, oh
absolutely, yeah, and then livegrenades for sure. Sure, safety being
(20:33):
key. Wait, if your guysare going to do grenades, I got
to get over here on this roadtrip. Boy, it's not like fun.
She's an intellectual sponge. She justgrasps knowledge and uses it. And
both her mom and dad are shooters, So okay, that'll the timing works
out real well, and this thistrip just all everything fell into place,
(20:55):
and she's a sponge. I knowshe'll do great. And obviously, if
I thought there were any concerns,we either adress them or dismissed the idea
altogether. I've got all the faithin the world. Inner. I was
just thinking, you know, weall have experience with grenades. We just
you know, water balloons are thesame thing. Yes, all right.
(21:15):
Water balloons are great, fine balloons, like a lot. We could fill
up water balloons balloons with water.Shoot those, I think is what Thoma's
getting at. No, actually I'mstill gonna actually throw the water balloons at
each other. Oh okay, okay, there you go. So slowly figured
it out, so there you go, see it. Don't smarter than me.
So, Sally, are you apolitical person? Are you following what's
(21:37):
going on? Yes? So whatdo you think? What's your take on
the election? Right now? I'mfully on trump side, fully on Trump's
side. Why is that? Iwatched the news with my dad a lot
just seeing Biden clearly doesn't really seemlike he could even zip up his pants
right now. So you're not right, there's that. No, you're not
(21:57):
wrong, and you know it's buthe is now on the way out,
so this is Look, we're alljust adjusting to this right now. But
I was just interested. I thinkit's unusual for a ten year old girl
to be interested in politics. Yeah, I told that a lot. I
bet you do. Well. I'mso glad that you're here. Thank you
for dropping in. Of course, this is great. All right, then
(22:18):
we'll get a report Jim, afteryou take her out shooting. We'd like
to get that range report from you, absolutely, if you'd like and referee
and see who does better. Already, you guys could tell what did I
tell you? Solely I'll do better? There you go. I'm sorry girl,
Jim. Why don't you teacher justsit back and watch you? Yeah,
(22:42):
go ahead, because no, she'sa better teacher than I am.
I could believe that, but golly, I wouldn't say if it wasn't true.
She's a great instructor. Absolutely,I appreciate you coming by, silly,
thank you. We'll have some funthis week. Yeah, all right,
all right, you guys do that. All right, Well, I'll
(23:03):
tell you what, what an interesting, interesting show, interesting week. And
now we're airing in the can't evenremember the assassination attempt anymore because we've got
this other thing to talk about. This is going to be fascinating news cycles.
Buddy oh Man just switches just intime. Right, No, I
wasn't right, service, I gosay I had a secret service. All
(23:27):
that is in a non story. Now, Yeah, amazing how this works
out, it really is. Well. Uh, we will have like many
twisting turns before we meet again.Next Sunday. I can hardly wait.
Get the popcorn. I'm telling you. There you go. Everybody, have
(23:48):
great week, all right, bya good one. We'll catch you next
time for the gun talk after show.
