Speaker 1 (00:00):
All right, here's an in the field report, and you're
not gonna want to miss the story on how I
harvested this buck.
Speaker 2 (00:06):
Right here, I'm kJ. You found the right place.
Speaker 1 (00:13):
We go all over this little blue.
Speaker 3 (00:15):
Orb sharing stories and tactics about chasing wild gang.
Speaker 1 (00:19):
Now let's get on the hunt. That's a field report.
Speaker 3 (00:26):
Welcome in, all you gun talk hunters. I'm your host, kJ,
and today's episode is brought to you by Hodgden Powder,
Ruger Arms, Range Ready Studios and Remington. Am O, all right,
this isn't in the field report. I'm obviously in the
studio because one my audio sounds nice and crispy, and
it looks great in here, and it's air conditioned, mostly
(00:47):
heated because it's cold right now. But later on we're
gonna jump out to the fields of western Oklahoma and
we're gonna have a brief discussion with my buddy Jacob
Stozel about his experience hunting out in Oklahoma. And I'm
going to tell you right now we had bucks jumping
fences over the top of us at eight feet.
Speaker 1 (01:07):
We had that happen a couple of times.
Speaker 3 (01:09):
But I really want to talk about my experience out
in Oklahoma, and I'm gonna give you a quick rundown
and then I'll send it out into the field. Okay,
I'm gonna rant a little bit right now, and it's
probably gonna sound insensitive.
Speaker 1 (01:26):
But I have a process. Here's my process.
Speaker 3 (01:31):
During the firearms season, I spend that time with my
boys out in Oklahoma, my two sons. You know, they're
seventeen and they are eleven, and that's my week with them.
I did not get that this year. And this is
gonna sound so bad, and if my family members are
(01:51):
going to be listening this, I'm going to tell you
right now. I loved having you in town and it
was awesome. We had Thanksgiving. I haven't had a Thanksgiving
at home in let's call it, I don't know, seven years,
maybe eight years. I mean, it has been a long
time since I've been home for Thanksgiving. That's just not
something our family does.
Speaker 1 (02:13):
Not say anything bad about people that do that.
Speaker 3 (02:17):
Thanksgiving is a very joyous time. It's bringing family in.
You're thankful for all your family, as am I. But
I didn't get my week with my boys, and that
kind of that that kind of bothers me a little bit.
But I went out and I took them out and
it was a it was a great time. I took
them out over a couple of days after Thanksgiving over
(02:40):
the weekend because I had to get them back to school,
so they are they're only out of school that week,
and so I've got that's that's my time to spend
with my boys.
Speaker 1 (02:49):
But so we go out there and have a great time.
It's all about the boys. It's rifle season.
Speaker 3 (02:57):
As things played out, I think it was probably the
buck that I by that I showed in the intro.
Speaker 1 (03:02):
That buck was.
Speaker 3 (03:05):
I think I saw him in season and I almost
got a shot on him with my youngest, my eleven
year old, because my seventeen he's at the age now
where he's he's going into doing his own thing and
setting in his own spots that kind of deal.
Speaker 1 (03:18):
Uh. But both boys got one.
Speaker 4 (03:21):
Uh.
Speaker 1 (03:22):
You know, my oldest son he had shot one in
U season.
Speaker 3 (03:25):
And here's here's a heads up for all you dads
out there, all you moms out there that are that
are helping your kids become outdoorsmen.
Speaker 1 (03:34):
If they shoot, no matter the outcome, go look for
the animal. Go give it a look.
Speaker 3 (03:42):
Because it was raining in bad conditions, he thought he
misranged it. He said, I shot the deer ran off
and I missed. I I know I missed. He's he's
just one hundred percent sold that he missed it. Well,
lo and behold, he did not miss it. He did
not miss it. And it was a fantastic deer. It's
(04:02):
a great deer. And it died within, you know, two
hundred yards of where he had shot. So made a
great shot on it, and.
Speaker 1 (04:12):
He just he knew he missed.
Speaker 3 (04:14):
He I was like, I asked him all the questions,
you know, hey, what did you see?
Speaker 1 (04:18):
How did the shot feel? Were you shaken?
Speaker 3 (04:21):
And he's saying, oh, you know, I don't know it
was I don't know, Like I don't I missed.
Speaker 1 (04:27):
I know I missed.
Speaker 3 (04:29):
Hey, do your due diligence, go follow up. But we
ended up finding his buck, great buck, he's got it.
And then my youngest shot one great deer. So then
I drove them back to Oklahoma, and then you know,
did the Thanksgiving thing, and then I on Thanksgiving, you know,
the day after Thanksgiving, drove back to Oklahoma with a
(04:51):
good buddy, Jacob Stozl, who you'll hear from here in
a little bit, went out to do my own bit
of hunting, and this is this was It was a
great time in the field.
Speaker 1 (05:04):
The rut was kind of in I find it.
Speaker 3 (05:07):
Found it to be kind of almost in all three
stages because I saw bucks, uh seeking Younger bucks were
definitely seeking.
Speaker 1 (05:14):
Uh.
Speaker 3 (05:15):
Then we've got deer in lockdown phase and those were
the typical bigger bucks that were in lockdown. And then
some bucks were just kind of chasing. They were they
were kind of pushing dose and stuff like that. But
story on this guy, I'm gonna deliver that real quick.
The night before I harvested this one and shot this one,
(05:36):
I missed a deer at three hundred yards a chip shot.
This was an easy shot, a shot that I could make.
Typically in my sleep, I found every excuse I could
to say, like this is why I missed. Overall, I
missed this deer because of my own shortcomings when it
comes to like slowing down like I had and I
(06:01):
did not think I had time.
Speaker 1 (06:02):
I had time, you.
Speaker 3 (06:03):
Know, to set up the tripod, to get a steady rest,
to put the tri the trigger cam on. So another
video that's going to come out over the Zeiss Conquest
for Scope. I've got video of me missing this deer,
and why I miss that deer. I didn't dial my moa.
(06:24):
I held on that deer because I thought, well, the
six or five creed more. Really, it's not going to
drop all that much out to three hundred yards.
Speaker 1 (06:30):
I've got one hundred yards zero. It's not going to
drop that far.
Speaker 3 (06:33):
It drops a little bit more than you think because
I shot right under that deer. I mean, and you
see in the video like it's a career trigger press
and I break the shot and it just falls right
under him.
Speaker 1 (06:46):
I mean so close, so close to this deer that.
Speaker 3 (06:50):
It got his attention immediately. It wasn't the sound, it
was the brushing of the bullet under under his undercarriage
and he goes hold on a second. That felt funny.
I think I just someone gave me an involuntary haircut.
I guess i'd be trimming his beer. I don't know,
but I trimmed some hair off of him and runs off.
Speaker 1 (07:14):
I mean, blast out of there. Hunts over not good.
Speaker 3 (07:19):
I was pretty dejected, not gonna lie, and that's okay.
As hunters, we want to make the most ethical shot
we can, and I just blew an easy shot on
a great deer. But sometimes a miss can lead to
amazing things, and that's maybe in decision making or just
(07:41):
in life in general. Sometimes when you miss, something amazing happens.
Speaker 1 (07:46):
And this is what happened to me.
Speaker 3 (07:48):
So after that, my one goal was really to put
my buddy Jacob Stosel on a solid deer like that
was my kind of goal, and wanted him to have
the best experience he could because he's.
Speaker 1 (08:04):
A hard working firefighter. He does a lot for the community.
Speaker 3 (08:07):
He dedicates himself to the fire service, and I really
do appreciate that about him, and he deserves a great
experience and he's happy just being out there, but I
really want him to get one. And he was around
good deer all week. I sat with him the night
after I shot this one and we had a legit
shooter jumped the fence right behind us at eight feet
(08:32):
in mid air. He saw it and his eyes were
as big as as saucers. I mean they were huge,
but one side was just kind of broken off. So
this dear, I made the decision based off of wind
and location and the simple fact that no one has
set back there. No one has set in this particular
(08:55):
area We've hunted close to it, but we hadn't hunted
this area. And it's a long stretch a like CRP
with mesquites rolling down the hill.
Speaker 1 (09:04):
And I was like, oh, you know, well, I'll see
what happens. I sat there, and this is the first
time I've set in a tripod stand that was knocked over.
I had to stand it up. It was knocked over,
and so I stood it up, crawled in there, barely
fit in there. I was wearing so many clothes because
it was really cold that morning. And I'm sitting there
(09:25):
and I'm.
Speaker 3 (09:25):
Like looking at this area and I'm just keeping my
eyes closed, being really steel. The wind's perfectly in my face,
light breeze, and I'm thinking to myself, Okay, this is
gonna be a further shot.
Speaker 1 (09:37):
Don't forget to dial. Don't forget to dial your scope.
Speaker 3 (09:40):
Because one thing I noticed about scopes like you've got
to you gotta if you're going to dial your scope,
you need to trust that we'll move accurately.
Speaker 1 (09:48):
And Zeiss is.
Speaker 3 (09:49):
Very well known for like having good scopes and good
good optics. So I'm sitting there and I'm looking and
I'm like, man, I'm not going to see any I
might see a little buck or two, but nothing. Nothing good.
Well Son's up looking starting to look good. Light's starting
(10:10):
to come through, and I'm like, oh, there's a there's
a dough out there about, you know, three hundred yards cool.
And I look right behind her and he's sitting there
with his head down feeding on who knows what, and
he he kind of like cocks his head and I'm like, okay,
I'm going to shoot him.
Speaker 1 (10:27):
That's a good deer. He's solid.
Speaker 3 (10:29):
And then to get into shooting position, I have to
get out of the seat because the shooting rail, the
rail that was supposed to keep you from falling out,
is too short. And so I brought a shooting bag
that I use in all my competitions up there, put
it on the rail, set the gun down, got my
(10:49):
elbow onto the rail, so the back is supported by
my other arms. So I'm kind of holding the rail
with my left arm under the buttstock. And gun was solid, solid,
And I paused for one second, and I said, what
did you tell yourself? All right, dial that scope? So
(11:10):
I just dial to two MA, just give myself a
little room. And so a dollar scope at two moa
finger on trigger, press trigger, shot goes off, and man,
it was so rewarding to hear the thump of that bullet.
I mean, it was a cuthwack and it's such a
(11:34):
good sound when that you hear that thumb you know, like,
all right, that's good connection. He wabbles a little bit,
wabbles a little bit, turns over and he's done.
Speaker 1 (11:45):
Awesome, got it perfect. Didn't know. I knew he was
a great deer when I'm gonna be happy with and.
Speaker 3 (11:52):
I like, I I told my buddy, I was like, hey,
I just put one down. He's solid, but I'm gonna
I'm gonna take care of him in the field. Well,
when I got down to him, I was like, oh
my gosh, Like he's a little bit bigger than I anticipated. Still,
I cleaned him in the field, dressed him out in
(12:13):
the field. I've got, you know, pictures and all that
stuff that will eventually be put out, but now it's
not the time for that.
Speaker 1 (12:22):
But the rut is was happening.
Speaker 3 (12:25):
It was happening fast, and I was lucky enough to
get another shot on a great deer. And that I think,
And because I was thinking about this, I was like,
why does this always happen where you shoot one and
you you finish out your hunt and then all of
a sudden you go, you know, I'm gonna go sit
(12:45):
over here, and all of a sudden you see a
monster or a giant buck or a giant elk. You're
because you're just you're just free hunting like you're you're
you're playing with house.
Speaker 1 (12:57):
Money at that point, you know.
Speaker 3 (12:59):
And I think a lot of it comes down to,
like the mentality of not overthinking it, not overthinking it
and go, you know what, I'm gonna hunt the wind
and no one's set back there, so I'm gonna just
I'm gonna just jump back there.
Speaker 1 (13:16):
And it worked. I don't know how, but it worked.
Speaker 3 (13:20):
So without further ado, let's jump out through the field
with my good buddy Jacob Stozel for an in the
field report. You ever pick up a rifle and think, oh,
this thing means business. That's the CZ six hundred plus.

degree bolt throw that cycles smoother than your buddy's pickup lines,

This isn't in the field report. And let's talk about
(17:29):
the first morning because we drive, we do a lot
to drive a long way to hunt these deer. People
probably think it's crazy, but I swear it's really not
that crazy when you see the class of deer. Let's
talk about your first night's hunt.
Speaker 4 (17:44):
Yeah, got here, put me in the field. The deer
we were up, they were moving, the bucks were chasing,
had a good one come out, but decided to, uh
give it one more year. That was the the biggest
buck that I have passed on. But it's all good.
Speaker 1 (18:06):
So is it hard to pass those deer?
Speaker 3 (18:08):
Because I mean you look at it and we all
think that we all will pass those deer knowing that
the neighbors will probably shoot them.
Speaker 4 (18:17):
Yeah, but no, you uh, you let me come out
here hunt all the time. So I uh, I felt
like it was the right thing to do. And next
year it's gonna be a uh, it will be it's
gonna be a great dear.
Speaker 1 (18:28):
Because he was really tall.
Speaker 3 (18:30):
So what did what were his mannerisms and what you
saw in the field, Because I find that like bucks
typically headed into food, like the more mature deer like
they typically are a little bit weary of going out
into open spaces.
Speaker 4 (18:45):
Yeah, that mature buck. He he stayed on the uh
the tree line, and he did not move. He didn't
budge from there. All the smaller bucks were were chased
in the field. But no, he stood there. Uh he
did not come out. So but but yeah, he just
hung back, watched all the little ones.
Speaker 3 (19:05):
That's the sign of a mature buck when you're sitting
there and you're you're watching a deer and he's sitting
and he goes you know what I'm gonna I'm gonna
see what happens and how this plays out, see if
any of my buddies get shot, and then I'll just
dug back in. That's how they get older. But what
is your what what has your been your feel? Because
(19:26):
we've been out here for almost a week. I mean
we've been out here for about five days. What are
you seeing as far as a deer? And this is
like December first, December second time frame that we're giving
you this report. So by the time people get it,
likely the rope's going to be shut down. But what
are you seeing like movement wise?
Speaker 4 (19:48):
I mean, the the the bucks are up and moving,
especially the young ones. Yeah, but no, the deer, they're
they're moving. We see him. We've been seeing them all day,
driving it out. They're they're they're on their feet. But uh,
but the uh, the young ones are chasing for sure.
(20:08):
But those mature books are just kinda kind of locked
in on.
Speaker 3 (20:13):
See. That's what I've noticed too, is I've noticed like
them being locked down.
Speaker 1 (20:18):
Bigger deer are locked down.
Speaker 3 (20:21):
Now, let's shift a couple of nights earlier, so this
would be like November, like thirtieth, November twenty ninth something.
They probably November thirtieth, the evening in November thirtieth, I
drop you off to your sand, your set, and we
do sets here. We typically do not we don't hunt
(20:42):
from a box line. Every once in a while we'll
crawl into a blind, but that's rare for adults. Usually
we reserve for those for the kids. But we'd like
to be a little bit more mobile around here that
we can move. And I feel like locking ourselves into tripods,
into into ground or box blinds, like, I feel like
that really constrains you in especially your movement. November thirtieth,
(21:08):
I drop you off. I make my way to my set.
I sit down, and I kid you not. Ryan, the
owner of Gun Talk CEO all that good stuff, text
me and he says, any deer. Do you know what
that means?
Speaker 1 (21:25):
Because I was typing out.
Speaker 3 (21:27):
No deer, I'm around deer, but not the right deer.
That usually means like, Okay, something special is about to happen.
Speaker 1 (21:34):
Yep, And and something special did happen.
Speaker 3 (21:38):
It was awesome. So my deer comes out, comes out.
It's a mature deer. I knew immediately when I saw
the body, saw the you know, a big Roman nose,
and I'm like, three hundred yards, just hold just a
touch high and we're good. Six five creed more. I
love that round, especially when I'm shooting, like I'm shooting
(21:59):
the Black Hill, like one hundred and thirty grain dual Performance.
Have absolutely been impressed with that. But I didn't dial
my scope.
Speaker 1 (22:13):
Yep. What's the text that I sent you?
Speaker 3 (22:18):
Uh?
Speaker 4 (22:19):
Well, was it missed?
Speaker 1 (22:21):
Yeah, something like that.
Speaker 3 (22:23):
No.
Speaker 1 (22:23):
I think I was like, I think my words were crapped.
My pants on a three hundred yard shot. Yeah, I
just totally blew it. And that happens, you know.
Speaker 3 (22:36):
I keep telling people like, if you want to get
good under the gun, under the clock, shoot those competitions,
shoot the NRL Hunter competitions, and just put yourself under
a timer. Dude. Everything played out in that set perfectly,
like I feel like everything lined up beautifully, like except
(22:58):
I didn't dial for my which out of three hundred yards,
like I typed it in my AB quantum map, and
it was I.
Speaker 1 (23:06):
Mean it was like three hundred or a three hundred.
It was like four MOA's.
Speaker 3 (23:12):
I shot right under the deer. And the worst part
is I captured it all on camera. Yeah yeah, but
but missus happened, and luckily the next morning.
Speaker 1 (23:23):
I redeemed myself. Well he did in a big way.
Should we show it?
Speaker 4 (23:30):
I think so.
Speaker 1 (23:30):
I think we have to show it.
Speaker 3 (23:31):
So if you're if you're listening to this, you're not
going to get to see the deer that I that
I shot and.
Speaker 1 (23:37):
And he is he is a special deer. He is heavy,
he is a very big deer, and this is him.
So this is what you're this is really when Jacob starts.
Speaker 3 (23:48):
Passing deer, I questioned, like, man, I don't know if
I would have passed that deer. This is what passing
a deer can lead to when you look at passing
you know those you know four and a half year
old that are just pretty.
Speaker 1 (24:06):
Dude, they can turn into this. This is a special deer.
Speaker 3 (24:11):
And when I walked up on it, he came in early, man,
and he was just were on an a fence line.
And I don't know what it is about fence lines
during the rut, but during the rut.
Speaker 1 (24:22):
You man, you just gotta there's something about fence line.
Speaker 3 (24:28):
And if I'm going to tell you anything like fence
lines can be special, I'm not saying hunt your neighbors
fence line. I'm just saying hunt off of it. I
was four hundred yards off of our fence line, plenty
of room to make a shot. But my gosh, this
is what passing deer really can lead to. Is something special.
Speaker 1 (24:48):
And I think this is my biggest buck that I
have shot out here. Now, I've sid dude. I see
these deer every year out.
Speaker 3 (24:54):
Here, but never seems to work out for me. Sometimes
it does. It's it's not bad.
Speaker 1 (25:00):
Yeah, so what happened last night?
Speaker 3 (25:02):
So this is now it's like, really, it's the pressures
on because we leave tomorrow and so what happened last night.
Speaker 4 (25:10):
Yeah, last night. We set up and we were kinda
we were hunting the wind for sure, but you know,
set up in a pretty it was.
Speaker 1 (25:17):
A dicey wind. Yeah, oh you that much. It's a
dicey wind.
Speaker 4 (25:20):
But obviously, yeah, we're going after where a bunch of
does are that we know? Uh, we set up obviously
we're we're sitting facing south, knowing that the the deer
are going to come feed on the north. But uh, yeah,
a dough comes running in pretty hot behind us and behind.
Speaker 3 (25:42):
Us, down wind of us, like just just shouldn't have happened.
Speaker 1 (25:48):
And then what happened?
Speaker 4 (25:49):
A big old, big old buck was following her.
Speaker 1 (25:51):
Oh what god he was. Man.
Speaker 3 (25:54):
That's one of those moments where like, you go, you
like point because I'm facing an opposite direction because I'm
basically watching Jacob's back and I can't see off my
left side and behind me, and Jacob goes, hey, there's
a there's a doe right there. There's dough dope, And
I'm like, all right, but I hear something like we
both hear it, I think at the same time, and
(26:14):
it's going right right and that I mean, that's a
that's a buck like trailing a dough like hot on
earth heels, and you caught a good glimpse of him
as he jumps the fence.
Speaker 4 (26:28):
How far away was he I'm saying eight feet eight
feet maybe less.
Speaker 1 (26:34):
He almost jumped on top of us and didn't know
we were there.
Speaker 3 (26:40):
We didn't move, I mean, but he jumped and I
could I could hear his breath when he jumped. It
was just kind of like, oh, and then don't and
he took off and I almost I almost yelled at Jacob.
Speaker 1 (26:55):
Shoot.
Speaker 4 (26:56):
Now, that was a good, good dear buck.
Speaker 3 (27:02):
He was great, unbelievable deer, A great deer. He had
on his right side. He had like just this unbelievable
mass five points on that side, so he was he's
probably a ten. But his right side just man, it
swept out and it came up beautiful deer.
Speaker 4 (27:23):
But didn't have didn't have the left side.
Speaker 1 (27:26):
I have the left side. I forgot it at all,
Like he left it somewhere.
Speaker 3 (27:32):
I don't know where he lost it, but there is
a left side somewhere out here that is sheered off.
Speaker 1 (27:37):
And I don't know how they do that.
Speaker 3 (27:39):
Sometimes I'll do it during the velvet you know season
when they're rubbing or they start to fight and it's
just maybe the nutrients isn't good or I don't know
what it is.
Speaker 1 (27:49):
But man, he was broke off on that left side.
And again you pass that deer. Yeah, are you doing
regret it?
Speaker 4 (27:57):
No? No, no, I mean that that happened fast. We
could have made it happen, but h But now he
needs he needs to get that other side back.
Speaker 1 (28:08):
Next year there's gonna be two monsters out here. It
was an exciting hunt. We had a lot of good experiences.
But I will I will end with this.
Speaker 3 (28:18):
Like Jacob did the right thing passing on that deer,
because when you and I will, I will give him
problems and I'll give him heck for it, just because
we're buddies and because I know he means well and
he wants to like do the right thing and he
(28:39):
wants to be invited back. And so when you're looking
at that and you're out in the field and you're like,
and he passed that deer is probably the biggest deer
he would ever shot. He's for sure the one, the
biggest one he's ever passed.
Speaker 1 (28:51):
And let walk. But I think he did right because
next year.
Speaker 3 (28:56):
That buck can absolutely turn into something like this, like
it one hundred percent can turn into just an absolute
hammer of a deer.
Speaker 1 (29:05):
So that's it for me. Gun talk.
Speaker 3 (29:07):
Hunters, you know the drill, keep those muzzles point in
a safe direction, and always be on the hund.
