Let's get this, you're listening to Fox Sports Radio.

Speaker 3 (00:30):
Oh nope, not Robin Chris. It's Martin and VJ filling
in for the Odd Couple, my favorite weekend radio hosts.
I'm gonna go ahead and just give us that title.
I like it. We are broadcasting live from the Tyrack
dot com studios and VJA. You know what, I know
you got friends all over the country. I sure do.

(00:51):
I know you got friends all over the world. Sometimes
you know, it's a middle of the night in Russia.
What happens if they miss our show? You know what
they can Shortly after the show hour podcast we will
be going up and if you missed any of today's show,
be sure to check out the podcast. Just search on
Couple wherever you get your podcast. Also, be sure to follow,
rate and review thee podcast. Again, just search on Couple

(01:13):
wherever you get your podcast. You'll see today's show posted
right after we get off of the air. How about that,
Serve so VJ. Yesterday, Uh, believe it or not, the
San Antonio Spurs played a basketball game. Okay, today, believe
it or not, the San Antonio Spurs play another basketball game.
But you know who won't be playing. I don't know who.

(01:35):
Mark Victor wem Binyama. He will not be playing due
to load management. And I brought this up because I
follow Mike Sando from the NFL, who comes on this
show quite a bit actually, and he said, he said,
da da da da. For Christmas, we bought our sons
tickets to the Blazers and the Suns tonight, plus the

(01:55):
hotel stays so they could get off work drive together
to the one hundred and fifty miles of Portland for
a chance to see Victor winbin Yama play. And I
just think, and I shit, and I wonder because most
of the time, the injury report affects me as a gambler, right,
most more often than not. Right, I'm like, who's gonna play,
Who's gonna be out? Yesterday I picked the Timberwolves knowing

(02:15):
that Luka Doncis was probably going to sit right, But
I get kind of removed because I mean, I haven't
paid to go to a sporting event, and quite some
time I get paid to go to sporting I'm about
to say that's the life we live, RAVI. So I
have a different perspective on this than the average fan,
but I just load management to me. At this point.

(02:36):
We are reaching a point now where look, okay, if
you go see Oppenheimer, right, you don't know when you
buy the ticket if it's gonna be a good movie
or a bad movie. You go to see the Barbie movie,
you don't know if it's gonna be a good movie
or a bad movie. But you know that Margot Roby

(02:56):
is gonna be in it. You know that good or bad,
she's gonna be in it. We're at a place now
where I feel like the stump. Remember Stomped the Yard.
When Stomped the Yard came out a card. So that
was a big, big moment in my high school, all right.
It was a huge moment because partly because Chris Brown,
who was the top of the world at that time,

(03:17):
one of the biggest stars in America at that time,
still obviously a pretty big star, but back then, Run It,
Run It. Chris brus was one of them, one the guy. Okay,
people walked out of the movie, stomped the yard because
he was advertised as being in it, so like there
was the main part of the promotion. And sorry for
the spoiler if you've ever seen this twenty year old movie.

(03:38):
But he dies like fifteen minutes in and people were furious.
People were furious, you know why, because you sold me
a bill of goods that didn't exist. You made it
seem like Chris Brown was this major star in the
film and he wasn't. He was out of there in
ten minutes. Victor win Binyama has no injury designation. He's

(04:00):
not hurt. He stepped on a ball boys ankle a
couple weeks ago. He twisted his ankle up, missed a
few games. He's back now, he's back in the lineup,
play just fining yesterday. He's not hurt. Across the NBA,
it is seeming like playing is optional in a sport
in which you have ultimate, guaranteed contracts and you are

(04:22):
especially a team like Portland's San Antonio, You're only going
to see the stars. You know why, because those teams
think you're only going to see the Stars play. And
it's just something that the league has got to figure
this out in a way that it benefits the fan,
because ultimately, right now, it is a crapshoot if you're

(04:43):
gonna buy a ticket and see your favorite player play. Yeah,
And that is something that as a kid, when I
was buying tickets to or my parents were buying me
tickets to games, it was because I wanted to go
see Alan Iverson. And the only way that Alan Iverson
wasn't playing was if he was hurt. That's it. And
somewhere down the line, actually I remember it vividly. I
was sitting at South Quade at the University of Michigan.

(05:05):
A notification came across my phone that Greg Popovich was
resting Manu Genoblie, Tim Parker and I mean Tony Parker
and Tim Duncan, and I was like, why, what's wrong
with them? And the only thing that was wrong with
them was age and that they were just old. And
it was the second night of a back to back
when they were going to play Miami. And maybe just

(05:25):
the answer is eliminating back to backs. Maybe the answer
is lengthening the season. But Lebron told on himself. He
told on the whole league during the end season tournament
when he said regarding the five hundred thousand dollars that
the winner got the per player on team that when
you give us something to play for, and I'm paraphrasing here,

(05:47):
but when you give us something to play for, alpha males,
all right, alpha males will go out there and compete.
Your whole contract is guaranteed in the NBA. That is
what you're supposed to play for. Just the idea that,
like people are Victor Winbinyam, who is nineteen years old,
if his body can't hold up to the riggers of
an eighty two game schedule, maybe the schedule needs to

(06:09):
be less. Maybe they should lop off all these games
before Christmas and start the season on Christmas Day so
we can see guys play every game that they are
eligible to play in. I'm not saying you got to
play through some severe injury. I'm not saying you gotta play.
You know, if you played fifty eight minutes to night
before because the game went to quadruple overtime or something
along those lines, you gotta go get forty the next night.

(06:32):
But the idea that just healthy, seemingly healthy NBA players
are resting for their long term success. It does not
jive with the idea that ultimately all of this is
the television show, All of this is about ratings, and
all of this is about keeping fans involved. Right now,
if I'm a fan and I'm buying a ticket to

(06:53):
the movie, I have no faith and confidence that the
lead actor is going to play are gonna start. So
it's just something that you know, I was saying, Victor
Weberinyama had a great shot to not win Rookie up
the Year simply because he was going to be load managed.
Not because of his play on the court, but because

(07:13):
you got to play sixty five games to qualify.

Speaker 4 (07:16):
Yeah, I'm with you on that. So a few things there.
Man very well said. If you remember the movie Life
with Martin Lawrence and Eddie Murphy where he told him soft,
I'll spell it out for you, s oft, soft to
That's what these players are these days, man. And then
when people like me say it, you get the NBA
for grade on Twitter to come after us as all
these casuals. These No, they soft when you the league

(07:38):
is soft and it's seep to the coaches. It's seat
to the front office, and we know the commissioner is soft.
That damn sure ain't David Sterr. I grew up with
David Sterr. David Stern ain't playing no junk, David Sterr.
You listen to some of these old guys sitting talk now,
listen to Carmelo Anthony and Rashie Wallace and these guys
in DeMarcus Cousins, and they'll tell you what David Sterr
used to tell them when he would sit probably them

(08:00):
Allen Iverson. Okay, he talks about when he used to
sit with David Sturt. The league is soft. These guys
are soft. The coaches are sold. Like marg just said,
nineteen years old and you're load managing already at night
at nineteen Broun you should be playing seventy eight to
eighty two games, thirty five minutes a night.

Speaker 3 (08:17):
You're supposed to be this new transcending up player.

Speaker 4 (08:21):
We were told that you were the best pro sports
prospect ever.

Speaker 3 (08:26):
That's over Lway, that's over.

Speaker 4 (08:28):
Peyton Manning, Andrew Luck, Bo Jackson, Lebron, James Michael, George,
Trevor Lawrence. We were told that you told us that
not a lot of us bought it, but that's what
you told us. And now we're just getting to the
new year and you're resting guys. That's why I said
the n season tournament was bad because you're gonna have
guys act like they really wanted to play, and it

(08:49):
really was kind of one guy that really wanted to
play and win it for you know, a lot of
bunch of different reasons. But I tweeted, the load management
after this n season tournament is over is going to
be insane. And you see it time and time again,
night after night after night guys are out and their
twisted ankle, quad contusion, quad contusion, but you're back the next.

Speaker 3 (09:11):
Night, like like, really, hamstring pull?

Speaker 5 (09:13):
Hey?

Speaker 4 (09:13):
I played football? You play hey, you pull a hamstring football?
You might miss a week basketball. You're definitely missing two
with three Gaball No, just one game, but he had
a hamstring injury. No, this low management thing, it's killing
the regular season and it's why the ratings are down.
The ticket sells it down. Turn on an NBA game,
show me to sell out Arenas. Just show me the
team that's selling out every night. What maybe the Knicks

(09:35):
and MSG Because that's just what they do Boston Celtics,
because that's just what they do there. But show me
the other teams. Hey, I was at a Laker game.
Saw a bunch of empty cs in a Laker game.
It's not sold out when like when Shaq and Kobe
were there, or when just Kobe and Power there, it's
not the same.

Speaker 3 (09:50):
You are affecting the product.

Speaker 4 (09:52):
And our good friend Aaron torres Here who follows us
on Saturday after Martin and VJ, he says it all
the time. It's a bad product. This is one of
the reasons why the league is just soft man. That's
why a lot of people don't respect it like they
used to. You can't tell me a nineteen year old
needs to load manage.

Speaker 3 (10:08):
One thing I'll push back on. I think, and I
think that this is something that needs to be explained
just a slight bit, because I talked to a couple
guys who were like back when the Warriors and Andrew
Wiggins were like, nobody could figure out what was wrong
with what was going on with him he left. I
asked a couple guys who were who were beat reporters,
Guys who are more plugged into the NBA on a
day to day, day in day out basis than I

(10:28):
am right cause I'm sitting here in front of the microphone.
They're actually in the locker rooms, right, They're in the
men in the arena. In terms of the reporting of
it all. And at that point, we'll have Mike Curtis,
Detroit Pistons beat writer from the Detroit News at the
bottom of the hour to talk about the Pistons and
also to talk about this phenomena. But it's not just
the players, no, it's also the organizations that are pushing

(10:52):
it on certain players. Right, A lot of players would
love to play eighty two games. In fact, just a reminder,
Michale Bridges came out and played the first quarter of
a game recently in which almost all the other starters
for the New York I'm the New Jersey Brooklyn. There
we go, the Brooklyn Nets were sitting because he wanted
to continue his consecutive games played streak. I respect that absolutely.

(11:15):
I respect that in terms of going up and showing
to work, even like arguing says essentially to play. I
respect that a ton and I really love that. But
it's something that is between the organizations and I imagine
individual players. So we have had instances in which guys
didn't want to play through this or didn't want to
play through that. And I don't really follow people for
not If you don't feel one hundred percent, that's fine,

(11:36):
you can sit down. That's why we have backups. If
you're injured, it hurt, you're hurt. If you're injured, you're
injured right injured your and and I fully fully understand
saying you know what, Hey, it's the playoffs, I'm going
to play through this, or it's December twenty fifth, I'm
not going to play through this because I want I
don't want to make a week long injury a month
long injury. I get that one hundred percent. But there

(11:58):
has to be something done because right now you go
to Crypto dot com arena, there's no guarantee that Lebron James,
Anthony Davis, or whoever the hell else is supposed to
be playing for the visiting team is gonna be there.
There's no guarantee that Russell Westbrook, James Hard and Paul
George Kawhi Leonard are gonna be there. There's no guarantee
at all. But you know what, that ticket costs the same,

(12:19):
no matter that they're not. But you're making my point.
That's what I'm saying. The league is soft, like it's everybody.
I don't think it's just the players. But when you
have the league saying, yeah, we'll sit this guy down.
And also, let me just say this, I am to
get off my long guy. I don't care. You guys
can say that about me all you want to.

Speaker 4 (12:34):
I'm the one that was out in the hot ass
sun working on my lawn all weekend long.

Speaker 3 (12:38):
You weren't. I was, so yeah, get off of my grasp.
I am that guy.

Speaker 4 (12:42):
The greats we love and respect it because they played,
and they.

Speaker 3 (12:46):
Played through an angle.

Speaker 4 (12:47):
Now, like the old line from the movie to Program
is when almar Vs gets hurt, he goes, are you
heard you injured? He has his coach. What's the difference
He goes, Well, if you heard you could play. If
you're injured, you can't. They don't call it hurt reserved.
They call it injury reserve. They don't call it the
hurt report. They call it the injury report. If you're
hurt and you can go, there's just gotta be something

(13:09):
in you that just says I can play. I can go,
but we get these little tweaks and twinges and these
little sores and bumps. It is a different world, it's
a different time. That doesn't mean that I have to
like it or Martin's gotta like it. There's something that's
gotta be done. Then they try to implement this rule
in now, if you don't play a certain amount of games,
then you're not eligible for all NBA things of that nature.

(13:32):
Now where that will affect you is if it's in
your contract. You get a certain amount of money if
you make All NBA First Team or you'll be eligible
for the Super Max or something like that. If you
play a certain amount of games, or you make this team,
or you win the MVP of things like that, that
will help. But I just think there just needs to
be a footput down and say listen, stop it. If
your players not legitimately injured you, he must suit up.

Speaker 3 (13:55):
You are You're punishing the fans.

Speaker 4 (13:58):
And that's the sad part about all because, like Martin said,
I went to a Calves and a Calves in a
Clippers game when Lebron was still with the Calves, and
I didn't know Lebron went playing until I got there
and I get to the skybox, I walk in. There
was that it was a Fox Sports radio skybox. I
walk in, I sit down, and everybody goes, yeah, Lebron's
I'll say, hold up what But he was dressed out.

Speaker 3 (14:16):
He was actually dressed out in his uniform with the
warm up on. But he did not play. It just
it sucked the air out of stables that night. It
really did.

Speaker 4 (14:25):
We just kind of like, oh, well, I mean, we're
really not here to see the Clippers. We came to
watch Lebron and Kyrie, but they're both out, so and
I know, like what about the children?

Speaker 3 (14:34):
Yeah, I know that's kind of overplayed, But I just think, man,
I had the opportunity. It was a quick story, real
quick before we go to break and again, if you
want to join in this conversation, eight seven seven ninety
nine nine ninety six six three six nine or eight
seven seven ninety nine on Fox, that's eight seven seven
nine nine six six three six ' nine. There you go.
But I had an opportunity as a kid to be

(14:55):
a ball boy for the then New Orleans Hornets. My
mom asked me, who do you want to see? What
player do you want to see, I said, Alan Iverson.
I got the opportunity to meet Alan Iverson before the
game and watch them play. I couldn't tell you how
many points you scored, but I can tell you that's
one of the coolest sports experiences I had in my life.
And I just think about these kids who you know,

(15:15):
it's a lifelong san Antonio span. Are you a kid
who's in love with Victor Winbinyama who makes that trip
to Portland all is to see him sitting on the bench,
and I feel for it. I feel for him because
that's true though it's you know, that's what is the
lifeblood of these sports is the kids who root for
him and the kids who love them, who grew up
to be fans. Because let's be honest, we all made
the decision of what team we were going to root

(15:36):
for at eight years old, and now as adults it
impacts our daily lives.

Speaker 4 (15:40):
Yeah, absolutely, wearing the jerseys, wearing the sneakers. No, that's
not overblown. And whoever says it is, you know, come on,
grow up, man, then think about that. It is about
the kids, because that's where it starts. So jump in
the conversation. Here's low management overblown. How do you feel
about it?

Speaker 3 (15:55):

I'll make up the read next segment, Vja. Let's go ahead
and get to our calls. All right, So let's start
with Oh, Hana, Lulu, I used to live out there.
My dad was stationed at a crater in the Army. Peter
from Honolulu. You're live right now, man.

Speaker 4 (18:04):
Fox Sports, Ready on the odd couple Martin vide sitting
in for Chris and for Rob Man talk too his brother.
This load management stuff, what side of you?

Speaker 3 (18:12):
Are you cool? Win it or you hated?

Speaker 7 (18:15):
It's a joke.

Speaker 8 (18:17):
I'm fifty four, and let me tell you.

Speaker 7 (18:20):
When we played basketball as kids, you were on the
court until you lost, and you played from let's say
game ball. You got on the court at nine o'clock
in the morning and you might have come off at
four if you were on a good team and had
run and you played all day. And then this load
management is a joke. That's what they wanted. The players

(18:42):
today want to be considered great. But I got a
hangnail and I miss a week. I'm sorry, it's not happening.
You know, there's always a debate. Always Lebron the goat
is MG to goat. Lebron got six foot nine to sixty.
He's a defensive lineman in the NFL. He grew easier
than my eight year old.

Speaker 3 (19:02):
Oh wow, I'll tell you what. Ron would be the
tallest defensive lineman by far him Campbell too tall. Jones
will be right there with them. Well, I'm just talking
about today. It'd be pretty big. We got next, all.

Speaker 4 (19:16):
Right, appreciate the call, Peter. Happy, Happy New Year, buddy.
Let's go to Kevin and Culver City. I love that.
That's right off the block. Kevin Culver City live right now.
Fox Sports. Ready, yacht couple, Martin Vja in for Chris
and Rob load management.

Speaker 3 (19:28):
Yay, nay, God is good.

Speaker 9 (19:32):
What's up?

Speaker 3 (19:32):
God is good?

Speaker 10 (19:34):
Happy New Year. Look, I'm a big fan of your
weekend show. I'm so glad that you guys have a
show up and enjoyed your commentary.

Speaker 3 (19:40):
Thank you, past Good Sports.

Speaker 10 (19:43):
You're looking at this load management thing. You know, it's
funny to me. Uh, back in the day in the
mid nineties, when Shack in Orlando was coming to l A,
you knew Shaq was gonna play, When Seattle was coming
to l au, Gary Payne and Sean Kemp, we're going to.

Speaker 9 (19:57):
Play now today, Lloyd mark It has.

Speaker 10 (20:00):
A sore hamstring. He's out for fifteen games. And they
use these little loopholes to get around my playing certain guys.
And one more quick thing about that Chris Brown song.
It's funny, you know, like a song from the like
generation when it's played by the sound Every song in
the mid two thousands was a little John like you.

Speaker 3 (20:17):
Know type right, Yeah, all.

Speaker 9 (20:19):
Had that a.

Speaker 10 (20:21):
Yeah yeah, but yeah, you know, I think the players
need to play, and it really, like you said, it
helps the league a lot when you can really sell
that these players are going to be on the court
and all they're doing is messing up their money. Because
you got a new TV deal coming up, you got
streaming is Apple TV? Is Apple going to really want
to buy into the NBA. Guys aren't playing, so they're

(20:42):
messing up their money. The coaches, the front office, they
need to play these players. The stars need to play.
Fans when to see stars, and the stars aren't in there.
Fans don't want to watch.

Speaker 4 (20:51):
No, I agree with you man, thanks a lot. Have
we got anything on that one. It's not the NFL.

Speaker 3 (20:55):
We're not sitting there watching Joe Flaco versus Trevor Simmy
and locking in. Yeah, but people tuned in to watch
Uncle Flacco last night though. But also you're watching Miles Garrett. Yeah, yeah,
has missed the game? Yeah, Quinn Williams, who has missed
you know, it's like I feel you.

Speaker 4 (21:09):
I feel you a lot of studs out there, so
thanks a lot. I appreciate the compliment too. Let's go
to New State today, Tennessee, Travis, You're love right now,
Fox Sports Radio.

Speaker 3 (21:18):
A couple man player. You know you know load management?
What do you say, man?

Speaker 9 (21:23):
You like this or no?

Speaker 8 (21:24):
Hey man, what's going on? I'm not a fan of
load management. I'm telling you from mister Tennessee. I'm a
Grisney fan and it kind of kicking me off. Last
Mike John Morant missed the game. They said the illness
and cool about that. I'm like, dude, you just came
back and played four games.

Speaker 7 (21:41):
What the hell could you be sitting.

Speaker 8 (21:43):
Out a game already?

Speaker 3 (21:44):
Yeah?

Speaker 8 (21:44):
They got it back to back tonight against the Cliffers.
I'm like you, I'm like, shortened the season about ten
to twelve games because they're playing about five to six
back to back a year, which just comes out to
ten or twelve games. Takes season down to seventy.

Speaker 3 (22:03):
That was the number one thing. I mean. I picked
the Grizzly last night thinking that you know, they're four
and over, John Moran back in the lineup. Think you know,
May cover the seven against the Denver Nuggets. You know what,
they get blown out? Why John missed the game? Let
me ask you. Let's go here because you you talk
about shortening the season.

Speaker 4 (22:18):
Okay, cool, So if you shorten the season, then you
definitely have to have something in there about players sitting out,
and we're giving you what you want. You don't want
to play so many games? Okay, seventy, but everybody better play?
How many sixty five?

Speaker 3 (22:32):
Sixty five?

Speaker 2 (22:33):
Okay?

Speaker 3 (22:33):
If you're not hurt, if you're not hurt, you should play. Yeah,
if you're not hurt, you should play. It's that simple.
But you know who's never hurt, never come, never hurt,
never hit all the time, Steve the Seger low management.
He don't even know what that means, never lost, Seve.
What's trending, my friend? Yeah?

Speaker 11 (22:48):
By the way, if I like the sentiment of this
whole conversation that it's the NBA and that includes the
players themselves don't care about the regular season, why.

Speaker 3 (22:57):
Should I should? Why should we? Yeah? I think it's.

Speaker 11 (23:00):
Logical that the NBA and the baseball season should be shortened.
But who's going to take a fifteen percent cut in
salary when there's fifteen percent fewer games. It's just impractical
that the unions never to agree with that because the
union doesn't doesn't care about what's best for the overall.
They're the players union. They just care about the players.
It's the same reason the Baseball Union wanted the DH

(23:22):
in both leagues. Has nothing to do with how the
game looks. It's another job. It's another high paying job.

Speaker 3 (23:28):
So the commissioner NFL, he works for the owners. He
don't work for the players. Eventually, your bottom's going to
fall out if you keep well, here's the example.

Speaker 2 (23:36):
You.

Speaker 11 (23:36):
Christmas and the NBA have been synomonous for many, many,
many years now, for essentially most people's lifetimes that are listening.
They had five games on Christmas this past week, NBA
averaged two point eight five million viewers.

Speaker 2 (23:51):
Wow.

Speaker 11 (23:51):
By comparison, the next day, there was a Bowl game
on cable with Rice against Texas State that got two
point eight million viewers.

Speaker 3 (23:58):
That's I mean that same, that's where we are as
soon as gonna be like five hundred thousand people watching
these games because you never know.

Speaker 11 (24:04):
Yeah, And that night the UNLV Bowl game against Kansas
two point seven million viewers. NBA on Christmas, the five
game average about two point eight million, while the NFL
averaged twenty eight million.

Speaker 3 (24:17):
Yeah, it's three games, sure.

Speaker 11 (24:20):
Enough, said Well, we have college football going on right now,
about six minutes to go in the first quarter of
the Cotton Bowl and Missouri Ohio State are scoreless. We'll
get to NFL notes in a moment. There are ten
NBA games going on tonight. Victor wembin Yama is sitting
out for the Spurs, who are five and twenty five
as they play one of the late games at Portland.
Spurs just one at Portland last night. By the way,

(24:42):
John Moran did not play last night due to illness.
He is due to play for Memphis at the Clippers
tonight after ten thirty Eastern. Joel embiids still out for
Philly with a sprained ankle, and he'll miss Saturday's game
as well. Bradley Beal of the Suns active tonight for
the home game against Charlotte, which has lost nine in
a row. Beal has missed two weeks with an ankle injury.
Sitting out for Boston tonight. Jason Tatum and Christaps Porzingis

(25:05):
they just played last night, had to come from behind
to win that overtime game against Detroit, so Boston's won
four straight. They are twenty four and six currently. The
Brooklyn Nets had the lead late third quarter at Washington
eighty two to seventy three, about three minutes to go
in the third and also in progress in the NBA
halftime Atlanta seventy one fifty three over Sacramento. The Jacksonville

(25:27):
Jaguars starting quarterback Trevor Lawrence will not play Sunday due
to a sprained right shoulder. Washington starting QB Jacobe Burssett
is questionable with the tight hamstring. Kyler Murray, Arizona quarterback
is due to start to spite an illness this week.
Falcons quarterback Taylor Heineke practice fully today after an ankle injury.
Texans quarterback c J. Stroud is off the injury report.

(25:49):
Titans quarterback Will Levis will start this weekend. He has
no injury designation anymore. Dolphins wide receiver Jalen Waddle is
out with a high ankle sprain. Quarterback two A Tongue
of I Looo will start despite some and quad injuries.
Bull wins today for Clemson, Memphis and Notre Dame.

Speaker 3 (26:05):
Back to you. Thanks Steven. Without further ado, let's get
my good friend in here, Mike Curtis, Detroit News Detroit
Pistons beat writer, Mike Uh, what's it like watching somebody
lose twenty seven games in a row? Like, when did
you think the streak was gonna end? If you ever
have so far?

Speaker 9 (26:24):
That's a good question, man, and thanks again for having me,
of course, for to the talk tonight. Losing twenty eight
games in a row is tough, especially when you were
a young team. You got the athleticism, you got the youth.
People think that you can probably catch a team off
guard one night, but this team has had a lot

(26:47):
of chances to stop this streak. I think about the
loss to the Washington Wizards. I think about the loss
to the Grid Leagues who were without John Moran. I
think about this most and lost to the Utah Jazz
when they sat I want to say eight players, and
four of those players were their top three score their

(27:08):
top scorers. So they've had a chance after a chance
in the streak. And then you see what happened last night.
They were up nineteen at the half on the Celtics
and then being able to what happened. Boston Majors comeback
in the third quarter and the game went to overtime
and they couldn't pull it out.

Speaker 3 (27:28):
Mike Curtis, Mike Curtz, are you doing? VJ?

Speaker 7 (27:30):
Burner?

Speaker 3 (27:30):
Husky here? Brother? Great having you on here, Lifelong Piston fan.

Speaker 4 (27:34):
I go back to the mid eighties, man, So that
was before the Bad Boys even got going, and then
again with Larry Brown and that crew with Chauncey and
the Wallace brothers and Tayshawn Prace.

Speaker 3 (27:43):
So I fast forward to today. Yesterday I talked.

Speaker 4 (27:46):
About Monty Williams, and I don't want to throw the
gentleman under the bus. I just kind of call it
what I see. He just doesn't feel like he wants
to be there. He said he wanted to take a
year off. Detroit pressed him. They put seventy million plus
all could be one hundred million with it centers on
the table. There's not a man walk in America that's
gonna say no to that. So let's go to the

(28:08):
coaching in the front office and what the GM is
doing with this team. What do you think needs to
happen moving forward? What do you think is going to happen?
If anything moving forward, it is just gonna kind of
eat this and then this is just what this year is.

Speaker 9 (28:23):
Yeah. Absolutely, Well, first I'll address Manti you real quick.
I know a lot of people pay attention to the money,
the contract, how many years guaranteed, But for a guy
who's around him pretty much every day daily base I
can tell you, man, he definitely cares. It may not

(28:46):
show during the games or he has that stoic look
on his face, but he shows emotions and he's taking
it upon himself to kind of, I guess, be the
face of this losing streak, like after every game. He's
taking accountability as far as not having his team prepared
on some nights, his rotation decisions which have been honestly questionable,

(29:11):
especially with those all bench lineups. But I think this
is a guy that cares and he's being tasked with
turning this thing around, which he didn't think was going
to be easy. But I don't think he also thought
that they would be in the midst of twenty eight
game losing streets either. But as far as what needs
to happen, I think they need to address that bench debt.

(29:34):
I just mentioned the all beense lineups and usually when
they go to a lineup with either Marcus Sasser. I
want to say Alec Birds he's been struggling, Alec Isaiah
Livers has been struggling, Marvin Bagley, James Wiseman. Badley hasn't
been didn't play last night for I think just he

(29:54):
was a healthy scratch. I think they want to give
Wiseman a little bit more opportunity to showcase what he
can do. But those all bench lineups are killing this team.
They're killing the momentum that the first unit is coming
out with. When you have k Kinnaha and Boy Bogdanovich,
I think the simple solution is staggered one of those

(30:14):
two with the second unit. But a quick fix, well
not a quick fix, but an adjustment that they can make.
They got to get approving NBA talent in that locker
room to help that bench unit out because they need scoring,
they need defense, they need whatever they can get right now.

Speaker 3 (30:35):
So sounds like they need a lot. They need a lot.
I want to ask you about this, Victor webin Yama
not playing tonight. Jay John Moran didn't play yesterday after
he missed, you know, the quarter of the season with
the suspension. Then he came back, played four games, was
out what they illness? They say, Hopefully he recovers quickly.

(30:57):
The skepticism my voice says, I'm pretty sure that's just
load management as well. What's your kind of take on
the league and the idea that I mean, especially if
you're a team like the Pistons, right they've been losing
just about every single game they play at this point,
A lot of fans are buying tickets to see the
visiting team, even though there have been a recent kind

(31:18):
of resurgence, and fans in a little Caesars Arena as
they were chanting, sell the team, Sell the team to
Tom Gorris. You can hear it through the TV broadcast.
But what's your take on guys sitting games out, especially
with the sixty five game minimum for reward qualification that
was implemented the start of this season.

Speaker 9 (31:36):
Yeah, that's a really interesting point you bring up. I
honestly didn't think there would be a lot of load
management this season, just for that reason that you mentioned
that sixty five game minimum qualify for the postseason awards
like MVP, Rookie of the Year All NBA, and then
that has direct effect on these guys paychecks and bonuses

(31:57):
as well, So I don't foresee that being an issue
long term. I think right now is just the time.

Speaker 2 (32:06):
Of the year.

Speaker 9 (32:07):
You got a lot of people that are out here
with illnesses. I mean, like even away from basketball, the
Pistons had a couple of guys who are questionable and
probable over the past couple of games due to illnesses.
So I kind of buy the illness front from from
John morint I'll say that just because it's that time
of the year seasons that the weather's changing. So but

(32:30):
as far as maintenance for winning Yama, I know he
had a really nasty ankle spring during the pregame warm up,
so I'm not surprised that he's being arrested for this.
I think they're on the first night of.

Speaker 3 (32:43):
A back to back or a second to back they
played last night.

Speaker 9 (32:47):
Yeah, yeah, so I'm not I'm not surprised that they
kind of want to be judicious with treating with that
ankle maintenance just because that's their that's their cornerstone player,
that that that they want to see going forward.

Speaker 4 (33:01):
Yeah, a couple of Martin and v just sitting there
for Chris Row. We have Mike Curtis on right now.
Detroit Pistons beat writer, Mike, let me give you three teams,
and I'm gonna let you pick with one three teams
and try to explain to me what the hell is
going on with them? Golden State, the Phoenix Suns, the
Atlanta Hawks. Sitting at twelve and eighteen. You're the beat writer,
You're the guy in this stage, man pig one, and go,

(33:23):
what's going on with one of these three squads?

Speaker 3 (33:25):
I can't. I can't figure it out.

Speaker 9 (33:28):
Yeah, I'm gonna go, that's a good question. I've seen
the Warriors, I've seen the Hawks, and I've seen the Sons.
I think the easiest option to go with is the
Sons because they're so top heavy with KD, Devin Booker,
and Bradley Beal, who they haven't even found a way

(33:48):
to stay on the floor. It's similar to Kd's time
in Brooklyn where he couldn't find consistent time playing time
with Kyrie Irving and James Harden. But when you got
a team that's so top heavy and you lack that
debts on the bench, it's gonna be hard to win games.
I mean, KD, at the end of the day, he's
still one of the one of the best players to

(34:11):
ever played, but he can only do so much, and
he can only shoulder the low so much on a
nightly basis. He has to have help, no matter if
it's in the form of Devin Booker or Josha Koge.
You got a lot of guys on that team who
need to kind of step it up, and they're so
strapped with their assets, it's gonna be hard to make

(34:32):
any moves right now in the interim. But they need
Bradley beal and they need him to be healthy and
his old self as soon as possible.

Speaker 3 (34:41):
Yeah, I think the big the biggest move that the
Sons can make is making sure Bradley Bil's back is
in shape so we can get out there and actually
contribute on a night and night out basis. But Mike Curtis,
thank you very much for joining us on the show.
And you know what, buddy, Hey, keep your head up.
You're gonna see it win soon. Maybe maybe it might
be tomorrow. We'll see, man, it might be tomorrow, but

(35:02):
you know, if it's not, there's another game on the schedule,
and there's another game after that, another game after that.
But you know, what, Mike. At least you're reporting on
history in some form or fashion, right, Yeah, you always
want to.

Speaker 9 (35:13):
Be on it, either the good side of history or
bad side of history.

Speaker 3 (35:16):
Well, Mike, you're on the good side of history. As
far as the odd Couple's concerned. Are the guys filling
in for the couple? Me and VJ. Mike, thanks for

(36:28):
what's up because the next time we're on the radio
will be tomorrow, but generally it's New Year's time, yes, right.
And Nicola Yoka kind of made me think when he
had his quote about how people are always recording him
out in public and so on and so forth. And
I want to think I would make one of my
New Year's resolutions to be less in other people's business.
I wanted to make one of my New Year's focus

(36:49):
on me. I got a lot of going on. I
don't need to be worried about what Dakola Joki is
doing outside of work, you know, or anybody else for
that matter, what they're doing so that was one of
my New Year's I was curious if you'd had any
that you love to share with the class.

Speaker 4 (37:02):
Yes, absolutely, I got a real big one is to
be more patient with my life, to be more patient
with my children, and more patient with my career. I
think a lot of times in our careers we want
it so bad. And if you're confident, you think you're
good at what you do, you think you should be
at a certain level. And I have nights why I'm
laying in bed and I'm like, wow, man, why am
I not? Why am I not on TV more? Why
am I not more fame? Why am I not? Why

(37:24):
why am I not you know, traveling? Why haven't I
done the Apollo for comedy? And I think sometimes God
gives you everything in your own time. And I learned
pay and when I am patient and I just do
the work and I just focus, pray and I meditate,
things do happen that I'm looking for. So I want
to one of my New Year's resolution is to be
more patient.

Speaker 12 (37:42):
You know what, guys, I got one too that I
want to say. I want to focus more on the
positives in just in general and life. That's my news
yours good resolution. Not that I don't focus on the positives,
but there have been times, especially in just this year,
where sometimes like just the negative aspects in life come
out and uh, you know happens to the best of
us does. But I want to kind of focus on

(38:03):
just you know, take away positive. When there's a bad situation,
let's make like, you know, let's make the good out
of it. Let's bring it, let's bring a positive into it.
It crescendos into you know, a positive vibe.

Speaker 3 (38:13):
I also have. Do you have one, Alex?

Speaker 5 (38:15):
Alex is like I gotta try it funny because Patrick
is literally a walking Golden retriever. So to hear him
say more positivity just cracks me Out's like the ocean
wanting more water, you know.

Speaker 3 (38:25):
But this is what's funny.

Speaker 5 (38:26):
And I'll say this remark like I'm somebody who's always
lived his life like there is no waiting for a day,
because then it's too late. Today's your day. Don't wait
for some day to tell you to do it. But
if you ask me to do something which makes life better,
it's to just listen more. Stop talking so much, listen
to what people say, because I promise you you'll figure
them out real quick if you just listen.

Speaker 4 (38:45):
Well, I don't know how Stop talking so much is
going to work for me, dude, to what you I
was for the popular I said, that's not gonna work
for us. Does anybody have any like food or ex
health ones because those are the popular ones, right or
do you have anything you want to go with my
my sports fan resolution?

Speaker 3 (39:02):
Okay, and it's to be a more positive fan. It's
to be a more positive fan.

Speaker 9 (39:06):
I am. I am.

Speaker 3 (39:07):
I generally operate from a place of contention with my teams,
and I get angry when they lose and feel very
little when they win. I'd like to feel better when
some of my teams win, even if they know they're
not going anywhere, like the New Orleans Saints this year.
They're not going anywhere, but every so often they win
a game and it could be fun, like when they
beat the Giant twenty four to six and ended Tommy

(39:27):
DeVito right that. That could have been fun, But I
didn't enjoy it one bit because I know how the
movie's going to end. But I'd like to kind of
have more fun along the ride.

Speaker 4 (39:35):
Yeah, there's the negative part right there. You just said
I know the movie's gonna end right right if you
get part of it. If you get rid of that part,
you'll bit I watched Titanic.

Speaker 3 (39:42):
I had a feeling how that one was gonna end too.
I couldn't enjoy it throughout. Jack could have lived by
the way. Yeah, exactly what did Steve Harvey say? Bring
on the water? I have a food one though. I
want to.

Speaker 4 (39:51):
I want to cut pork completely out of my diet.
I eat ham fine for swamp.

Speaker 3 (39:56):
Yeah, I eat.

Speaker 4 (39:56):
I eat ham sandwiches. I love a good ham and cheese,
our turkey cl which comes to ham and bacon. I
don't eat pork chops and Chitlin's and pig feed and
none of that stuff. But I am a bacon guy.
On Sunday morning, there's a ritual in the Husky house.
Daddy gets up. My kids know Daddy gets up. I
make Sunday breakfast right before the NFL game start, and
every Sunday morning, here's that good old bacon man. I

(40:19):
was just telling Alex doing to break I need. I
need to cut that out of my diet. So that's
gonna be a big one. I'm gonna focus on no
more swam man, no more pork in my diet.

Speaker 3 (40:28):
You know, I didn't even know that people did not
eat pork until I moved to Michigan as a teenager.
I just thought it was like a New Orleans, Louisiana
where you from no idea, thats like restriction. I was like, really, really,
you guys eat turkey bacon. Coming up next, NFL divisions

(40:48):
could be locked up this weekend. Which one do we
think will be done and wrapped up by now? Coming
up next, Fox Sports Radio
