Speaker 2 (00:24):
Let's get this, punnies, you're listening to Fox Sports Radio.
Speaker 1 (00:32):
It is The Odd Couple. I'm Chris, He's Rob. We're
live from the Tireraq dot Com studios. Tirek dot Com
is the way tirebind should be in this right here,
The Odd Couple is the way sports talk radio should be.
Speaker 3 (00:46):
Rob.
Speaker 1 (00:46):
Let's stick with college basketball, but go to the men's side,
of course. The championship game is tonight, Purdue, led by
seven to four Player of the Year Zach Edy Rob
against the Connecticut, which is going for its six championship.
I mean, U kind has become just such a dominant
(01:08):
program and they're going for their second straight Rocke.
Speaker 4 (01:11):
We're They're not a blue blood, but they win a lot.
Speaker 1 (01:14):
Yeah. I mean, I don't know if blue blood's changes,
but I feel like they're a blue blood, you know,
like we're.
Speaker 5 (01:22):
The blue bloods Duke North Carolina, Kentucky, right.
Speaker 4 (01:28):
Right, like old school. Yeah, I mean I'm just saying, like.
Speaker 1 (01:31):
That's what I'm saying. If it's just based on kind
of it's like some of the flagship programs year, sure, Yeah,
I think that's what it is.
Speaker 4 (01:39):
That's what a blue blood is, because.
Speaker 1 (01:41):
They've been great. Rob Now, I mean it's been what
how the nineties when they got good?
Speaker 5 (01:48):
Was it the funny Jim forty years? I remember when
I covered St. John's basketball interviewing Jim calhouna's first year
with Cliff Robinson was a was a player at college.
I Jim Calhoun and Cliff Robinson at Alumni Hall on
the campus of Saint John's, Chris before a game, and well,
(02:10):
they didn't play at Madison Square on. They played at
on campus.
Speaker 1 (02:14):
Yeah, I'm a little different. I look at I kind
of look at blue bloss I get it, if you
if that's the technical definition. I even look at a
Syracuse Like if Syracuse was in the final four, people
would be like they wouldn't view them kind of as
like a blue blood, like a historic program, even though
they only won one. I mean Indiana, rob would be
(02:35):
technically a blue Blood. But man, they haven't been consistently
good since Bobby Knight attired or left, was fired? Actually,
wasn't he fired?
Speaker 2 (02:45):
There?
Speaker 1 (02:46):
You know what I mean? Was fired? Yeah, they haven't
been consistently good. Well, let's get into it. Because John
Calipari robbed the news broke over the weekend that he
is going to well he's taking a five year deal
now to coach at Arkansas. Remember there was talking might
(03:09):
get fired by Kentucky, but they decide to retain him.
And now he is on his way to Arkansas. What
do you make of this? Yeah?
Speaker 5 (03:17):
I mean, I know it's nice to put a bow
on it in his grade's going to Arkansas and he's
got this five year deal or whatever. No, they made
it clear Chris that he wasn't They weren't happy with
what has gone on at Kentucky of late, and that's
why he sought to go find him another job to
(03:37):
spare the embarrassment. Who walks away? They owed him thirty
three million dollars, Chris, which he forfeited. What would be
your reason, Chris? If everything is good right, and they
made a public that they were keeping them, then they
have a statement, right, yep, that don't even make sense
to go to Arkansas really and to take a pay cut.
(04:00):
It's not a small one, but he took a pay cut.
There's no way, Chris. This is him being proactive. They
didn't have to say they didn't want you. They made
you feel like you weren't wanted enough to wear You're like,
I I gotta get out of here, do you know
what I mean? I'm sure the hostility from the fans,
they're sick of it. What were they get knocked out
(04:23):
in the first round the last three years?
Speaker 1 (04:26):
And in the first round?
Speaker 4 (04:28):
First round, Chris.
Speaker 1 (04:30):
Who they lose to? Yale? Was he lost?
Speaker 6 (04:35):
No?
Speaker 1 (04:36):
This year? It was who was it? Round? It was?
It wasn't Yale? Gosh, who was it?
Speaker 5 (04:43):
I just forgot the school, Yeah, yeah, but not a
strugg it was.
Speaker 1 (04:48):
It was a bad Yeah, it was a much lower program. Right.
Speaker 5 (04:52):
Uh so, so Kentucky, Oakland, that's right, Oh Oakley, I'm sorry,
my god, my god. Notkly California, Oakland County, Chris outside
of Detroit, and last year.
Speaker 1 (05:04):
They lost in the second round, and the year before
that they lost the fifteen seed at Saint Peter's.
Speaker 5 (05:09):
There you go, and Kentucky now Chris Ready has won
won one NCAA tournament game and just one SEC tournament
game since twenty nineteen, five years under Kla Perry. Over
the last four years, they've been eliminated in the first
round by a fourteenth seed, then eliminated by a second
(05:32):
round like you talked about, and by a third seed,
been eliminated in the first round by fifteen seed, and
missed the tournament altogether. That's what's been going on here.
You can't sit here and tell me that this was
your doing and you just decided to move on because
you got a better deal in Arkansas. No, they didn't
want you at Kentucky. This is a nice spin. It
(05:55):
feels good. You don't think Arkansas wants it because to me,
musclemen just loved Chris to go to USC, right, So
why didn't he just go to USC? Muscleman could have
stayed at Arkansas, like I really, you were replacing musclemen
and went to USC.
Speaker 1 (06:15):
That ain't a promotion to me. I agree, No, it's
not a promotion. But I agree with what you've said.
But I also think Rob and we said it when
you know, we were discussing whether or not he should
be fired I exactly what I thought would happen happened.
Remember I said they should fire him, but because he's
(06:35):
got thirty three million guaranteed, I don't think they will.
But they did enough to force him that, you know what,
they have to do nothing. He knew how toxic it was.
Speaker 2 (06:46):
Rob.
Speaker 1 (06:47):
It was toxic. It was bad last year. The fans,
I mean, I'm guessing administration was bad too after this,
you know, debacle in this year's tournament. But the fans
were it's so bad last year, Rob that John Calipari
knew that if he went back there it was going
(07:07):
to be ugly because it was ugly last year. And
I think I actually think, yeah, he basically you know,
he wasn't wanted in Kentucky by the fans. Administration was
stuck with that money. They probably didn't want him. But
I think this works out, Rob, for all three parties
(07:28):
involved Calipari, Kentucky and Arkansas Calipari because again, it was
gonna be incredibly ugly in Lexington next year. And then
it works out for Kentucky because they didn't want him,
but they were stuck with him because of the money.
And now they've been able to move on and don't
(07:49):
have to pay him anything. And then Arkansas Rob because
Musselman is a good coach. This year they struggled, but
he'd done a pretty good job there. But they they're
kind of you know, they've been okay, pretty good. You know,
they're in the top twenty most years. But Calipari is
on a different leve. For all his falls, and we've
(08:11):
talked about Rob, great recruiter, not a great game coach,
all his flaws, he's still on a level as far
as fame, as far as accomplishments, and as certainly as
far as recruiting. Their muscleman is And so now Rob
(08:31):
Arkansas gets a shot in the arm, like they're for
their program and even him coming off these losses and
all of that. Rob, for their program, this is a boost.
Oh you know what I mean, no doubt, now you're
getting attention, you know, so I think it.
Speaker 5 (08:50):
I don't disagree with that. I don't disagree they for
for Arkansas. This is good for them, yep. But if
you think anything's gonna change or he's gonna go down
to win a championship, I just I don't see that happening.
Speaker 4 (09:03):
But they don't care. It's a higher ap program.
Speaker 1 (09:05):
If he gets some yeah, if he, I mean I agree,
I'm not even thinking championship right now. Could it happen? Sure?
If he It'll be interesting Rob to see does he
get the level and caliber of recruits that he was
getting at Kentucky and that he was getting that Memphis
before because he was connected to world Wide West. World
(09:28):
Wide West now works for the Knicks, and so is
that pipeline still gonna be there to help Kyle get
some of these players? And so I don't know, He's
still gotten great players at Kentucky. And will he keep
that same I think he will, Rob, Like, will he
(09:49):
keep the same approach I'm going out and get the
one and done's the best high school players in the country.
I'm getting them all. Or will he try to, you know,
get guys that will stay three four years?
Speaker 5 (10:05):
Rob?
Speaker 1 (10:06):
You know he talked about that after their loss. I
think it was kind of just lip service. I think
you'll go.
Speaker 5 (10:11):
For the big you know, the big time if you're
trying to win big, you know, you normally need.
Speaker 1 (10:16):
Those players like that's nice to see, but now it's
kind of changing, right, I mean you you like like
you khn their biggest NBA prospect is a freshman who's
not their best player this year, but I'm the most
talenteddu has no huge NBA prospects, I mean Edie, you know,
but you still if you have a player like and
(10:39):
we know we talk about all the time, Carmelo Anthony
or someone of that ilk that comes along with you, Chris,
they can ride you to a championship, like they can
because there's so much better than everybody else.
Speaker 5 (10:52):
But I ask you you the game has changed a lot,
and what what has happened is trying to get a
cohesive unit together. You know where the other team's been
playing for three years and their guys are older than you,
you know, like older, and it.
Speaker 1 (11:07):
Makes it harder.
Speaker 5 (11:08):
There's a big difference between you staying there sixteen and
nineteen and twenty two.
Speaker 1 (11:12):
I mean, it just is well it's interesting when you
say that, Rob, because I agree, but it really shows you.
We were talking the other day, remember about the one
and done, and you know what's fair is that guys
could come out of high school right and go if
they are good enough to play in the NBA or
get drafted, then they should be able to go right
(11:34):
to the NBA. But what's best for the game would
actually be if these guys stayed a little longer in
college and matured and rob the fact that guys that
will get drafted in the lottery in the first you know,
after one year of college as far as college players
(11:56):
really aren't better, or let's put it this way, can't
beat third or juniors and seniors and maybe fifth year
seniors who aren't gonna get anywhere near the NBA. I mean,
think about that. That should tell you the level of
play in the NBA to some degree is that you
(12:17):
got so many of these young talented wonder kins, but
they really don't know how to play yet, and so
it's an interesting dynamic. But yeah, we'll see how you
think it. I think you'll do well. I don't know,
like you said, I'm not even thinking championships. I mean,
he might luck in the one if he gets you know,
he gets some superstar recruits. But I think Kentucky he'll
(12:40):
make him put him on the map the right.
Speaker 4 (12:42):
Thing, like make it so that he had to get
out of there.
Speaker 5 (12:45):
And you're right, Chris, the fans that had it, oh gosh,
they were really they just it was gonna be ugly.
Speaker 4 (12:50):
D yeah, and he was smart.
Speaker 5 (12:51):
He didn't want to be in that atmosphere and you
don't want to be Remember you live in that town, Chris, right,
can't go to the store Ko grocery store. Can't Your
wife is being badgered, you know what I mean? Your
kids in school like like that becomes a thing where
you got to get out of dodge and it's too
hot and no one it's not like when you won
(13:13):
the championship and you're walking around town. Christ everybody wants
to buy you a beer. Now everybody's great point and
saying like, hey, you stink.
Speaker 1 (13:21):
You know what I mean, right right? I mean cal
and and it's a and I don't know that he
could have you know that he didn't mind it. But
even if he could handle it, Rob, what about your
wife and your kid? You know she can't. And I
don't know if his kids are you know, if they're
still in that in the home or anything.
Speaker 4 (13:38):
Yeah, I don't know how it is, you know, Yeah.
Speaker 1 (13:40):
But I mean your wife, Rob, Like that's that's hard
on the wife, you know, and so and it was
hard on him too, I'm sure, but it definitely would
be hard on your family, all right. Eight seven seven
ninety nine on Fox, Don Calipari headed to Arkansas. What
are your thoughts? That's next? A couple of Fox.

Speaker 1 (14:17):
But here's the thing. We never have enough time to
get to everything we want to get to.
Speaker 7 (14:21):
And that's why we have a brand new podcast called
over Promised. You see, we're having so much fun in
our two hour show. We never get to everything, honestly,
because this guy is over promising things we never have
time for.
Speaker 1 (14:33):
Yeah, you blubber list name in me. Well, you know
what it's called over promise. You should be good at
it because you've been over promising women for years.

Well, it's a Cavino and Rich after show, and we
want you to be a part of it. We're gonna
be talking sports, of course, but we're also gonna talk

continue on our after show called over Promised. Well, if
you don't get enough Covino and Rich, make sure you
check out over Promised and also uncensored by the way,
so maybe we'll go at it even a little harder.

Speaker 1 (15:03):
There you go, over promising.
Speaker 7 (15:05):
Remember you could see it on YouTube, but definitely join us.
Listen Over Promised with Cadino and Rich on the iHeartRadio app,
Apple Podcasts or wherever you get your podcasts.
Speaker 1 (15:15):
All right, it's the Odd Couple live from the tire
rag dot Com Studios eight seven seven ninety nine on Fox.
You'll turn the way in John Calipari, I mean basically
was acted in spirit. He was asked at Kentucky. Now
he'll be taking over at Arkansas. We think it works
out for him. Arkansas and Kentucky. What are your thoughts?
Speaker 5 (15:37):
You can't cut it any other way? Man, do this
because uh oh he's got to get to Arkansas.
Speaker 1 (15:43):
My god.
Speaker 5 (15:43):
Oh yes, Mike in Texas, you're in the eye couple
of Fox Sports Radio.
Speaker 1 (15:48):
What's up, Mike?
Speaker 8 (15:49):
What's going on? Many? Join y'all show. Y'all got the
best show going. Y'all got it going on.
Speaker 4 (15:55):
Thank you, buddy, see.
Speaker 8 (15:56):
I think he shot the writing on the wall and
you start looking for another job before you know, before
they fire.
Speaker 9 (16:03):
I'm from Texas.
Speaker 8 (16:04):
This guy shock a smug is the same thing when
they're getting ready let him go, right, he got a
job with my kid. But I'm not throwing name out
there because they got to get somebody that knows what
they're doing, and somebody can stip in and win right away.
And I think be a good first Oh.
Speaker 1 (16:20):
Why would they go back to him? I go after Day,
I go after Dan Hurley.
Speaker 4 (16:25):
Rob Well, all right, you, Mike appreciate its.
Speaker 1 (16:30):
Talk about the guy in Alabama who just led them
to the final four, Billy Donovan. Rob not like he's
having a honeymoon dancing in the flowers in the NBA.
He's been there nowhere, I know, and they're like nowhere
in the middle of nowhere exactly like there's no they're
(16:50):
not good.
Speaker 5 (16:51):
Right, David and Florida, you're on the odd couple of
Fox Sports Radio.
Speaker 1 (16:56):
What's up, David?
Speaker 9 (16:57):
How much's it going?
Speaker 1 (16:58):
Fellas doing good?
Speaker 9 (16:59):
Buddy Man doing good, doing good. I think John Calipari's
really got to dig deep into his bag of coaching
tricks for this Arkansas job. He's not gonna have the
attraction that he's got at Kentucky to get the one
and done, and with the transfer portal and n I
L it's really even gonna be hard to attract. Uh,
and he transfers over there. Arkansas doesn't have the perch
(17:21):
strings that Kentucky has. They're not a blue blood. Nobody's
beating down the doors to just come play for John
Calipari or beating down the doors to play for Kentucky
and have that that name on their jersey.
Speaker 1 (17:33):
Look, it'll be interesting. It'll be interesting to see how
it goes because remember he did get players at Memphis,
which is a similar route. That was probably a similar
program to Arkansas. You know, it's a good program, but
it was a good program.
Speaker 4 (17:48):
And I don't want a table at Memphis, that's all.
Speaker 1 (17:51):
Right, and now you got to do it above board, no, no, no, right,
But but he did get players at Memphis, so we'll see.
It's gonna be interesting.
Speaker 5 (18:01):
Derek Rose on line one, who was your bank account
fatter or smaller? After John cap just asking all right, Uh,
let's go to Andre Massachusetts. You're in the couple of
Fox Sports Radio.
Speaker 1 (18:12):
What's up?
Speaker 4 (18:13):
Dray, how you doing.
Speaker 3 (18:15):
Thanks for taking the call. You had a bank account
with fatter because Don Califari takes care of his people
and he's been down with n i L since the
nineties in the world finally start up. So I agree
with you. This is a win win. He's heading the Arkansas.
The reports are the owner of Tyson Chickens is a
big time Arkansas booster and contributor. So he's gonna get
(18:35):
a huge contract day and then b have the n
i L funds that he needs to keep his one
and done NBA All Stars.
Speaker 5 (18:43):
And who's gonna who's gonna coach for him? Drey when
the game starts? Did they figure that out?
Speaker 3 (18:49):
Okay, he's gonna do it again, Rob at Arkansas.
Speaker 1 (18:52):
This will be good though, See what what was Arkansas?
You just get to the final four, get to the
Elite eight consistent league, right, they'll be a little better.
Speaker 4 (19:02):
Yeah, But Greg, you don't think he's a good coach.
Speaker 1 (19:05):
Do you?
Speaker 3 (19:07):
Kyler Pari xs and oh, strategically no, he's a great recruiter, right,
and he's in and he's lacked in terms of cracking
down and and and you know, building up the strategy.
But in terms of Kentucky. They're lucky they don't have
to pay him that thirty three million dollars seven package.
They go out and get whatever coach they want. You're hearing,
you're hearing Billy Donovan, Nato to the hot coach out
of Alabama, Sewan Miller coming over from Xavier. Bruce Pearl
(19:30):
is right there at Auburn. So they're gonna get a
good coach. But the question is gonna be will they
be able to because again they've had these issues. Will
that that coach be able to break through and get
them in to have the Final four and have next sense.
I think they're gonna need a Billy Donovan or somebody
of that caliber or you know.
Speaker 1 (19:47):
To Yeah, Billy Donovan would make a lot of I mean,
I go for Hurley that swinging for the fences. Don't
know if you want to leave you kind of rob
but Donovan would be good. And who had great success
in college.
Speaker 5 (19:58):
Uh, Nate and Ark and saw you're on the eye
couple of fox sportuaiting.
Speaker 1 (20:02):
What's up? Nate?
Speaker 5 (20:03):
My boys?
Speaker 6 (20:04):
Man, appreciate y'all taking the call. Yes, sir, Hey, look man,
I'm around razorback stands the all day. Man, I'm a
Tennessee offense man, I'm bleed one man. But listen, his
high as perfect for them.
Speaker 1 (20:15):
Man.
Speaker 9 (20:16):
Listen, they ain't been.
Speaker 6 (20:17):
To a Final four since ninety five. Calipari gets them there. Man,
Hey listen, we all know sometimes you need to change,
change the scenery, man, you know. I mean it's a
he has a lot of stress there. You see it's
here getting a lot greater. You know. I think it's
a I think it's a good hire man. I think
he's gonna be a good coach there.
Speaker 1 (20:37):
He still yeah, I mean, look, it's not the same
level of program. Expectations earn is high.
Speaker 5 (20:44):
Yeah, well it'll be good. Thank thanks for the call.
Nate in Arkansas, appreciate Chris. One thing real quick I
don't understand is why didn't he like say, I'll take
give me half of that money and I'll leave. You know,
but but I but you can't, but you can't hold
me to me not getting another job. I'm surprised that
(21:07):
he would leave thirty three million on the table and
not force them, you know what, I mean, to pay something.
Speaker 1 (21:13):
I mean, I think what did he taking a million?
Speculation that I think they were gonna keep him, and
he started talking to other.
Speaker 4 (21:24):
People and just realized that he yeah, yeah.
Speaker 1 (21:27):
Like he just I think he understood, Yeah, they'll keep
me because of the money, but they don't want me. No,
they don't want me, and the fans are gonna be
you know, terrible to me. Right. I think it's one
of those Yeah, all right.
Speaker 7 (21:41):
Uh.
Speaker 1 (21:42):
We got Aaron Torres, our college basketball expert, around the court,
and of course he went to Yukon, so he's all
over the Huskies. Oh my god.
Speaker 2 (21:51):
Be sure to catch live editions of The Odd Couple
with Chris Brussard and Rob Parker weekdays at seven pm
Eastern four pm Pacific on Fox Sports Radio and the
iHeartRadio app.
Speaker 1 (22:02):
Rob, let me ask you this, what do you think
is the best storyline tonight? Like, what what would be
the best outcome? What story would be the best outcome?
You can winning or Purdue winning.
Speaker 5 (22:18):
It's always the underdog winning. That's that's always the better story.
It really is, because people don't expect them to win,
and if they see something that they don't U come
won last year. Chris, there's seven and a half point
favorite tonight. You know that's a big score. Seven and
a half. It's not like three points or whatever. It
could go either way. You're saying decisively that they should win,
(22:42):
that that the Yukon should win. So if somehow Purdue
is able to win that game, I think it's an
incredible storyline.
Speaker 1 (22:53):
I would agree with you. I do think that Purdue.
I picked you, Conrad. We did our brackets, you know,
for the challenge Fox Sports Radio Bracket Challenge. I picked you.
Who did you pick? You picked Houston? I think I
think so? Yeah. I mean I stopped following my bracket
after a couple of days, like, what are we doing here?
Speaker 6 (23:18):
Right?
Speaker 1 (23:19):
Exactly? I didn't even want to see the carnage, but
this might be one I got right. Uh, but I
honestly would like to see. Are you still live?
Speaker 5 (23:29):
He says no, But I will say started the show
today that no matter what happens, that I'm going to
be Doug gott Leaps.
Speaker 1 (23:36):
I'm happy about that. Who did Gottlieb picked to win
it off? Well?
Speaker 8 (23:40):
He had Yukon losing the second round, so that kind
of turned him quickly.
Speaker 1 (23:44):
Turned him quickly. Who'd you have win it all? How
do you con it?
Speaker 4 (23:47):
You had Yukon against who against?
Speaker 1 (23:51):
I feel like I had them beaten Duke Okay, Florida.
I think I had Yukon over Duke. So but I
hope that for Due wins. It's like you said, it's
I'm I don't have a rooting entro. It's not like
I'm not gonna. I couldn't care less if they win. Yeah,
it'd be great. They're a great story too, first time,
(24:12):
you know, a team's won back to back since seven,
that would be huge. Danny Hurley kind of submits himself
as you know, a legendary coach. Rob. This would be
his second, I believe, or would it be his third? Rob?
G What would this be for Danny Hurll? I think
it's second and he's still fairly young rob as far
(24:33):
as college coaches go, you know, so he could win
more championships you know down the line. Uh yeah, this
would be his second, you know, obviously back to back.
But he's he's you know, he's got a ways to go. So,
you know, it's kind of a great young coach, relatively
young coach making his mark. It'd be interesting to see
(24:55):
if he stays so that u Kon is a great
story in and of it. But Purdue Rob and I
think one of the other reasons Purdue, in addition to
being the underdog, is that their leader is Zach Edie.
He's seven to four rob and he's a good player.
(25:15):
Like years ago, and you know, we're not ones to
buy into all the players of yesteryear couldn't compete with
these guys, but the game was different. It was centered
around the paint. Big men were dominant. I mean, Rob,
you can go down the line. Obviously you had the
era of ol Cinder and Walton and Elvin Elvin Hayes,
(25:36):
and before them it was you know, Wilt Chamberlain and
Bill Russell. But you know, you had Ewing, you had
Elijah Wine, you had Ralph Sampson, Tim Dunnan. Like big
men have been, you know, huge players and not literally
but figuratively in the sport, in college basketball, and now
(25:58):
they are not that big of a factor anymore, especially
when they play close to the basket. And Zach Edi
Rob is a throwback years ago when the game was
played differently. I think he would have been a lottery
pick and and maybe a high a high lottery pick.
(26:18):
And now, you know, I don't think he's gonna be
able to do much in the NBA. I think he'll play.
I think he'll have a career, but I don't think
he'll be a star. You don't think is he a
first round I mean it's all over as far as
Mike drafts. You got low lobby, you got low first round,
you got people don't think late first round. Yeah, I
(26:39):
think late first round, and he doesn't. He's not like Bobone,
you know, for the Mavericks or George mirror Sign. I mean,
he can move, but now you you have to guard,
you know, out on the perimeter a lot, and you're
you're covering so much ground that you know, I like
I said, I think he'll have a career, but I
(27:00):
don't think it'll be a star in the NBA. But
he's a superstar in college basketball. So I think it'd
be fun to see kind of a guy like this
win and rob for Purdue. This is there the way
they have to do it. He has to be dominant inside.
He has to you know, u CON's got a seven
for two player who's good clinging, and he has to
(27:24):
dominate clinging to the point where he can't really guard
him by himself. And then they have Purdue has to
hit threes. They gotta hit threes. And they're a great
three point shooting team, Rob, second best in the country,
one of only two teams to hit forty or more
percent from three. So that's their formula, that's how they win.
(27:45):
We got the big boy inside killing you, and we
got shooters from three point land, and so you know
that's that's a good formula. You kind of course, they've
got guy all five of their player be scoring. They
got great ball movement, player movement, tough to guard, play defense,
(28:08):
so you knd certainly worthy of being the favorite. But
they've lost three games this year, Rob, They're not unbeatable.
And you and I have seen We've seen many teams
that everybody thought was going to win, right. The first
one that comes to mind is UNLV, when they were
stomping mud holes all over the nation and then they
(28:30):
got beat by a duke team they had slaughtered the
year before.
Speaker 4 (28:34):
Exactly Nobody saw that coming.
Speaker 1 (28:36):
No, No, I was distraught at that point. I wasn't
even covering anything. I was working. I was a sports writer,
you know, Rob. When I started my career, I sat
in the No, I wasn't even that I sat in
the news room at the Cleveland Plain Dealer answering phones
from three pm to midnight.
Speaker 5 (28:57):
Oh my god, and you know how many people would
call up from the bar drunk.
Speaker 1 (29:02):
Oh hey, who beat at three nineteen? And like, yes,
twenty four it did. Because there was no internet. You
could call me and my buddies are arguing what was
the starting five for the calves in the miracle at
Richfield seventy six? And you'd have to either know it
or go look it up?
Speaker 5 (29:20):
In it all in the media, guy Christian, the old media.
The newsrooms were filled. There was nowhere to look. You
have to look stuff up in a book. Oh it
was so Rob.
Speaker 1 (29:30):
I was doing that and I remember so like when
high school football started and they would you know, we
had our high school writers who would go out and
cover the games and come back. And what we would
do in the office is, you know, you had stringers
from high schools who would go to their high schools
(29:53):
game and call the newspaper and have all the stats.
Cleveland Heights beat Shaw and you want this seven? And yeah,
how who asked so many yards? And we would take
down the notes and there right like two paragraphs. And
I remember, Rob, the first time that my little paragraphs
(30:14):
got in and it wasn't a byline or anything, but man,
you felt such pride, you know, like, oh man, I
killed that, you know, a little two paragraphs, basic writing,
you know what I mean.
Speaker 5 (30:27):
My first job too, Chris, same kind of thing when
I was at the New Haven Register when I was
in college, and I was like a clerk too.
Speaker 4 (30:33):
I think they called them sports clerk or whatever.
Speaker 1 (30:35):
I was a reporter, but you know, they just had me.
I wasn't out in the field yet, but.
Speaker 4 (30:39):
I was making five dollars an hour.
Speaker 5 (30:41):
I thought I was doing something, you know what I mean,
taking scores and putting together roundups and little things like that,
and then the next day you would see it in
the paper and you would just be so proud of right.
Speaker 1 (30:54):
It was crazy. It was crazy. But so we'll see.
We both think you CON's gonna get it. But it
would be nice. It would be fun, I tell you what.
More than anything, Rob, I'd like a close game, a
nail bier, right, so at least we get some excitement tonight.
We always want a good game. Yeah, absolutely, all right,
it's the eye couple. Chris and Rob. Y'all know what
(31:14):
to do.
Speaker 2 (31:15):
Keep it locked be sure to catch live editions of

the Week. The Pro the Week goes to none other
than the great Don Staley. The South Carolina coach led
her team to a thirty eight and oh season that's
right perfect. She capped it off with a national championship
(32:12):
over the Iowa Lady Hawkeyes. It was her second national
title in the last three years or third overall. Rob,
So again, congratulations to Don Staley, Express Pros Pro of
the Week and Rob. Speaking of Don Staley, Scott Fowler
of the Charlotte Observer rights that the Hornets, who are
(32:34):
looking for a head coach, should hire don Staley. What
are your thoughts on that?
Speaker 4 (32:41):
If she's the best person for the job, why not.
Speaker 1 (32:44):
Well, that's where like, yeah, I mean him saying just
hire it. No, not an interviewer. Yeah, I think if
they want to interview her, she should be an Absolutely,
she can be interviewed. But yeah, you don't just give
it to her. And here's why, because rob A lot
of guys from college have not had success, more most
(33:08):
Larry Brown. Sure, he's the only one that's won the
championship in college, and that so many you and you
robbed Jerry Tarkanian. He did all right. Billy Spurs, yep,
but not for long. You know it was quick. It
was quick.
Speaker 4 (33:26):
He was biting on that towel. But they weren't again.
Speaker 1 (33:29):
Billy Donovan, we talked about him. He probably can't wait
to get back to college. He should call Kentucky forget
waiting for them to call him. Uh Rick Patino, you
know he had a little success with the Knicks, I mean,
made the playoffs, but we all remember how bad it
was in Boston. I covered that. Did you were you
(33:50):
at the press conference.
Speaker 5 (33:52):
No, no, I'm the Knicks when they swept remember that
when they swept the six Ers. Yeah, Rod Strickland and
Mark Jackson grabbed the brooms, Chris, do you remember this,
grabbed the brooms from the people at the spectrum, the
workers and because it was the sweep and no, they
would have crossed the floor like you.
Speaker 1 (34:11):
Know, it was a sleep. Don't forget that. Those teams
were fun to watch. Bettino was their full court press.
I loved it. And Mark Jackson was a man. He
was an entertainer. I mean, he had a great career
all the way through, but that first year, if you
covered that rookie year, his rookie year, Rob he took
the league by storm. I think he averaged about ten assists.
(34:32):
I remember that passes were crazy. But Patino and yeah,
I mean Calipari. I covered Cal with the net.
Speaker 4 (34:41):
Zan Garcia is a reporter's name.
Speaker 5 (34:43):
I always forget, remember Dan Garimber.
Speaker 4 (34:48):
Dan Dan got into so much trouble.
Speaker 1 (34:50):
You know, Dan cow called him like a racial slur,
right because Dan was a Mexican and he called him
a name, and I remember that he had to apologize, right. Yeah,
this is way before and when I got I think
that happened the year before I got on the beat,
because I don't think Dan, you know, it was so bad.
I don't think Dan was covering him anymore. Next year
(35:10):
when I when I got.
Speaker 4 (35:11):
Can I tell you something that he did to me?
I'll never forget.
Speaker 1 (35:14):
Yeah.
Speaker 5 (35:15):
So I'm I'm supposed to have lunch with Sam Bowie
and Sam. This is the days Chris, were you in town?
Speaker 6 (35:22):
You know?
Speaker 5 (35:22):
And you get So we're talking and we said we'll
meeting the lobby. So Sam gets to the lobby before me.
Dan comes down and he says, uh, hey, Sam, what
are you doing? He says, I'm about to go to
lunch with Rob Rob Parker. He says, oh he's Rob
said he can't make it.
Speaker 1 (35:43):
Let's go to lunch. And he went to lunch. He
got down there, he wasn't there, but we wasn't.
Speaker 5 (35:49):
No, I'm looking, we didn't have cell phones or anything
right looking, he said. And then and then they I
see them coming back like or something, you know, like
I like what happened to Sam? So I just went
and something that he came back. And then he says,
so then I see Sam coming back with Dan and
he said.
Speaker 1 (36:07):
I said, Sam, what happened? He said?
Speaker 5 (36:08):
Dan said you weren't coming, So we went out to
I could not believe that.
Speaker 1 (36:13):
Were you what you?
Speaker 2 (36:14):
So?
Speaker 1 (36:15):
I know you were man. You know how it is
because you're trying to get yeah, like you know what
stuff like. So I was pissed. Were you upset? Yeah?
Speaker 4 (36:22):
I yelled at him. I was really pissed.
Speaker 1 (36:24):
Yeah that's that's that's you.
Speaker 4 (36:27):
And Sam didn't after that, you know what I mean.
Sam frowned at him too, like lying to me.
Speaker 1 (36:32):
I had a lunch set up. I mean I thought
you were gonna say he invited himself to go with
you and Sam.
Speaker 4 (36:38):
You know I would have said, no, this is all
you know what I mean, like this is right.
Speaker 1 (36:41):
Right now, we're just going by ourselves and you know,
but yeah, I mean look don Stalley nick right. We
talked about it on first things. First, he had an
interesting idea. He mentioned Kentucky rob the men. I mean
that's something again, maybe you on an interviewer talk to her.
There's nothing wrong with it. You never know, she might chrish.
I have some ideas. You might be blown away. You
(37:02):
might be blown away, but you know it'd be cool.
Also if she Rob, we talked about you got Pat Summit,
who won eight championships at Tennessee. Obviously, Gino rim want
eleven eleven at Yukon Andy still there, maybe this could
be her run because they've had runs like Gino hadn't
won one in eight years.
Speaker 5 (37:22):
And what's crazy? I saw that, Chris, she has what
three now three? But there are five coaches who have
three or more, you know what I mean?
Speaker 1 (37:31):
That's all well women, you know, it's it's been dynasties,
a lot more dynastic than the men's has. And so yeah,
I mean she might want to stay there. I would
guess she's gonna stay there, Rob, and just you know,
build up that program. Continue, I should say, continue to
win and see how far she can take it. All Right,
(37:52):
we got an hour left of the odd couple games
starting pretty soon. Keep it locked, Fox Sports Radio
