Speaker 2 (00:22):
You're listening to the Best of the Odd Couple with
Chris Brusa and Ron Harker.
Speaker 3 (00:30):
Ronnie James.
Speaker 4 (00:33):
We just got done talking about Bronnie and at the
Chicago Combine heading towards in the NBA Draft. And there
are reports out a few reports today about the Lakers,
who are of course are embroiled in a coaching search.
Speaker 3 (00:51):
And the reports have three.
Speaker 4 (00:54):
Finalists or leaders I should say, for their coaching job,
and it is JJ Redick is one of them. Sam
Cassell is another who I like a lot, and then
Joe Berego is the third. And he coached in Charlotte
when Michael Jordan was the owner. Didn't have much success.
Speaker 5 (01:15):
But I don't know remember that name at all, Chris,
I don't remember that.
Speaker 3 (01:18):
Yeah, yep, yep, yep. James. I'm sorry, James, but rega oh,
James Brell.
Speaker 4 (01:24):
He's an assistant now with the Celtics, but coach to
Charlotte Horns didn't have much success. But in fairness, they
don't have a lot of talent. And so those are
the three favorites. And then there's also reports from Sean
Sharania that the Lakers are very interested in drafting Brianni James. So,
you know, a lot of people think Lebron is running
(01:46):
the franchise, rap I do not. I don't think he's
running the franchise. He wanted Tylo, didn't get him. He
they gave him what Frank Vogel. Instead, he wanted Kyrie.
They wouldn't trade Austin Reeves and Company to try to
get Kyrie. So he's been told no, he's been told yes,
(02:11):
he wanted Westbrook and obviously they wouldn't got him. But
I think it's a little overblown that Lebron is just
running things. But do you think the fact that JJ
Reddick and the reports Jovon Buja of The Athletic, who's
our friend of the show, who's on here a lot,
he said that Reddick is the slight favorite. So when
(02:34):
you see that they may or very interested in drafting
Brownie and that JJ Redick is a favorite, reportedly for
their coaching job. Do you think that means that Lebron
is indeed running things?
Speaker 5 (02:49):
Chris?
Speaker 1 (02:50):
I got a message for Jeanie bust and for the Lakers.
Stop the madness. You will regret this. What are you
doing where the Los Angeles Lakers are turning over its
franchise to Lebron James, who, Chris, by all accounts or
(03:12):
most accounts, won't win again. Okay, I get it about Okay,
most people believe he will not win again.
Speaker 5 (03:21):
And yet here you are.
Speaker 1 (03:24):
A marquee franchise, not only in the NBA, Chris, but
in all sports. Absolutely, you will regret this by allowing
this franchise to be run like a mom and pop store.
Speaker 3 (03:44):
Is this on?
Speaker 5 (03:46):
This is the Los Angeles Lakers. This is not the
Charlotte Hornets, Chris.
Speaker 1 (03:50):
It's not some Mickey Mouse franchise Orlando Magic. This is
the Los Angeles Lakers with some of the greatest players
who have ever play.
Speaker 4 (04:00):
Most of the greatest okay, yeah, have worn this uniform.
Speaker 1 (04:05):
They're never gonna be empty seats. I don't care what
you call the arena. I don't care who's playing there.
I don't care who your star is at that time, Chris.
They sold out when Schwitz Parker played alongside of Kobe Bryant.
Stop it already, no, but I'm just saying they're gonna
sell out regardless they still had Kobe.
Speaker 5 (04:27):
They're selling out regardless.
Speaker 1 (04:28):
And my point is the idea and the notion about
JJ Reddick being at the top of your list to
be your head coach.
Speaker 5 (04:39):
It's one thing, Chris.
Speaker 1 (04:41):
If this is the University of Wisconsin at Green Bay
and you want to.
Speaker 3 (04:45):
Take a fly, why'd you say them?
Speaker 5 (04:47):
Then you want to take a fly on a novel?
Speaker 3 (04:49):
Shout out to the Godlief.
Speaker 4 (04:51):
Congratulations to our colleague, Godlieb.
Speaker 3 (04:54):
If you want to green Bay, I'm with it. I
got noe.
Speaker 5 (04:57):
I like that.
Speaker 1 (04:58):
That's fine crime for the University of Wisconsin at green Bay.
Speaker 3 (05:03):
Hold on, damn it before it.
Speaker 5 (05:05):
It ain't about the Los Angeles Lakers.
Speaker 1 (05:08):
This is not the organization that is giving people their
first opportunity in this situation where supposedly you have a
team that's ready to win. Chris, if you got Lebron
James and you got Anthony Davis and.
Speaker 5 (05:23):
You really believe you have a chance, you.
Speaker 1 (05:25):
Can't put Lebron's podcast partner on his contemporary and ask
him to guide this team to a championship. It is
embarrassing where the Lakers are and what they're doing.
Speaker 5 (05:40):
They will regret this. I know they don't want to
believe it.
Speaker 1 (05:44):
Somehow they went five years without the playoffs with Kobe
Bryant still on the team. Go ahead, turn the keys
over to Lebron and let him drive the car around.
He's forty years old. He'll drive your car with the
blinker on for the next years. Go ahead, it's a mistake.
Speaker 3 (06:04):
Okay, sounds nice, rock sounds fine, but.
Speaker 4 (06:09):
The reality is that you're way way overblowing this all right.
First of all, and I don't think they should hire
JJ Reddy. Let me say this. I think there are
two and I know one of them is unrealistic rob,
But if I were the Lakers, there are two guys
I'd be looking at first, Mark Jackson, and I know
(06:33):
he's persona non grata and you.
Speaker 3 (06:35):
Know years ago, and I gotta be honest, right, I.
Speaker 4 (06:43):
Do think also if Lebron and I'm I don't know
for a fact he would push from Mark Jackson, but
I do think he would respect Mark, and I think
if he was giving them like a list of names,
I would expect that Mark jacks and would be on it.
But I don't necessarily think he's giving him a list
of names. Secondly, Rob, I would look at Sam Cassell
(07:08):
who is on the list, and Sam, Rob, Sam has
paid his dues.
Speaker 3 (07:14):
A time. Yes, he's in Boston now. And you know
this right.
Speaker 4 (07:19):
I covered Sam when he was with the New Jersey
Nets and they were the New Jersey Nets at that time,
and Sam was a leader. Players loved him. He was fun,
but he was a leader. He would tell you what
needed to be done and got it done. Chris and
Houston and got it done Sam. While look Stefan Marlbury
(07:39):
in his prime was better than Sam. But when Nate
I was there when they made that trade and it
went south with Marbury because it just wasn't a fit,
you know, his personality and everything, and they would have
been better off with Sam. Even though he wasn't as
good as Marbury individually, he was just a better fit
for the team.
Speaker 3 (08:00):
But anyway, I think saying would be great.
Speaker 4 (08:02):
Hopefully they give him a legit shot.
Speaker 3 (08:06):
But here's what I'll say, Rob. First, if it's if
it's Reddick.
Speaker 4 (08:11):
Obviously you said he's Lebron's podcast partner, which he is,
but he's more than that. He did play, and this
would not be a first rock Steve Kerr coached the
Phoenix or the Golden State Warriors without ever coaching. Now
he had been in the front office in Phoenix, but
it never coached. Mark Jackson, who we mentioned, had never
coached when he went to Golden State. Derek Fischer, Rob
(08:34):
remember when he went to the Knicks, had not coached.
That didn't work out obviously, but still, hey Larry Bird,
you remember Larry Bird in Indiana didn't coach, So this
would not be unprecedented if it is JJ Reddick. And
then let me get to Brianni. If they draft Broanni,
I mean, who's sitting on the end of the bench
(08:56):
for Milwaukee the NASAs Ante di Kompo doubt he can
play a lick as far you know, relatively speaking to
NBA players, but he's on the team. So if Broni's
the fifteenth man, thirteenth man, whatever it is, it ain't
gonna kill the Lakers. So I and I just I
(09:16):
do agree with you rout. They're not gonna win a championship.
I don't believe. I don't see this team winning a
championship in Lebron's next three years whatever it is he
has left to play. But I don't think they're winning
a championship like any other way either.
Speaker 3 (09:33):
So I think, you know, they they obviously like Lebron.
Speaker 4 (09:37):
They want to bring his son, I think to they
want to keep him with the franchise.
Speaker 1 (09:42):
I told you this cool. I told you he was
coming to the Lakers the whole time. I never doubted it.
I never doubted it.
Speaker 4 (09:48):
Okay, so yeah, so you mean bronni Oh yeah, Yeahnnie,
he's getting drafted. Yeah, I think he's getting drafted by
the Lakers too. But let me finally say this, Rob,
You're right. They are run like a min and pop shop,
and that I think they always have been to some degree,
except they had who the great Jerry West, right, he
(10:11):
will guys, he's a basketball guy. He knew what he
was doing. But I mean Jerry Buss, who was a
great owner. But you know it's his family, Rob and
Genie and.
Speaker 3 (10:24):
Before her it was her brothers. Like it is.
Speaker 4 (10:27):
It's amazing, and Jeanie's a great business person, But that
doesn't mean that, you know, basketball operations. They got the
Rambus family in there, the husband and wife, you know,
kurtin Linda. I mean, it is shockingly Rob because they
are I mean it's the Yankees, the Cowboys and the Lakers. Yes,
(10:49):
they are a phenomenal franchise, the glamour franchise of the NBA.
But they are run like a mom and pop shop.
And like I said, they had your West. They've had
all the great players and once it started with you
know they're in LA and obviously even before Magic and Kareem,
(11:11):
they had Jerry West and Will and you know all
these stars, Elgin Baylor, Gail Goodrich. But once showtime took off,
you know, it was just players wanted to go there.
Rob and they've been fortunate because of that because, like
I said, without Jerry West, their mom and pop.
Speaker 1 (11:27):
Shot, they are, Chris, and you can't keep doing this.
I just I get it. You got it. You got
a championship with Lebron. You should be happy with that
and turn the page, man, turn the page.
Speaker 3 (11:37):
So do you think they should trade him?
Speaker 1 (11:40):
I would do I would move away from Lebron at
this point because now Chris and I hear what you're
talking about Jannis Giannis isn't forty years old. You're in Milwaukee,
not Los Angeles. The Lakers have leverage in Milwaukee. They
have no leverage, Chris. They got bowling alleys and and
Polish sausage. That's all they have. So they have to
(12:03):
take Bronx, thank you. So they have to take uh,
they have to take uh. I'm just brother Jannis's brother, Chris,
because they have both of them, and they got rid
of one, so they still got one. Right, That's what
I think with the with the Bucks.
Speaker 3 (12:22):
The Knicks to the Knicks to J j R. Smith's brother.
Speaker 5 (12:26):
Yeah, that worked out great.
Speaker 1 (12:28):
I'm just saying it. Yeah, I'm not saying it's never happened.
But this is the Lakers. That's all I'm saying is that, Chris,
they have leverage lebron You know what, you want to
move from your mansion in Beverly Hills and you don't
want to live here, and you don't want the sunshine,
and you don't want to access to Hollywood and all
the other stuff, and you want to go somewhere else.
Speaker 5 (12:48):
Okay, but we're not just going to acquiesce and do.
Speaker 3 (12:52):
Whatever you But so you think they should not draft Brownie.
Speaker 5 (12:55):
No, I don't think that they should.
Speaker 3 (12:58):
Because somebody's gonna draft.
Speaker 5 (13:00):
It's sent franchise.
Speaker 3 (13:03):
It just does, does it.
Speaker 5 (13:05):
Yeah, the Lakers don't have to do this.
Speaker 1 (13:08):
The other franchises have to do with Chris and I'll
give you look, there are all places that have to
would have to do this.
Speaker 5 (13:15):
They don't have to do this.
Speaker 4 (13:16):
I spoke to Rich Paul today and he was saying
that it's not like he Lebron and Bronnie are not
tied at the hip.
Speaker 3 (13:25):
So like Bronnie.
Speaker 4 (13:26):
Going to let's say a team Phoenix drafts Bronnie in
hopes of getting Lebron. He said, Lebron's not just gonna
go take the minimum to play with Bronnie. And so
I think he's gonna end up staying with the Lakers.
Rich didn't say that for sure, but I think he's
gonna end up staying with the Lakers. But I mean,
I just I hear you. They don't have to. Of course,
(13:47):
they don't have to draft Bronnie. I don't see any
harm in drafting Bronni. Like Ephim said, those last few
guys on the bench, you know they're not gonna be
you know, they're not gonna make or break your team anyway.
And I just think I don't think I think JJ
Reddick right, he already interviewed with Charlotte, so it's not
(14:09):
like he's only on the list.
Speaker 3 (14:12):
I mean, I don't know for a fact, but my
point is I think he would be on.
Speaker 4 (14:16):
He's on that like he's viewed as a future coach,
is my point, and not just by the Lakers. So
I don't think this is like just some guy, you
know what I mean, out of the blue that Lebron says, hey,
I want him, and it's like, really, I do think
some people could think JJ Reddick will be a good coach.
Speaker 3 (14:36):
He would, Again, he wouldn't be my choice.
Speaker 4 (14:38):
You just got rid of Darvin Ham because you felt
like he was young and obviously made some young mistakes
and all that, and to fire him to move on
to someone else with no experience. I get it that
no rob other than Mark Jackson, there's no definite upgrade
over him.
Speaker 5 (14:57):
I understand that.
Speaker 1 (14:58):
But I just Chris is a dangerous thing contemporary. They're
working together like you could, it could it could wind
up being bad.
Speaker 4 (15:08):
It would be interesting, just because I mean, obviously they
stopped that podcast, but it would be interesting, you know,
because of their relationship.
Speaker 3 (15:16):
That would indeed be interesting.

Speaker 3 (16:01):
Well.
Speaker 4 (16:02):
Speaking of trash talking Tuesday, Rob Rob g trashed Caitlyn
Clark and Rob Tonight's her debut Indiana Fever more like
a Day but the way.
Speaker 3 (16:14):
That she's played so would and what.
Speaker 4 (16:19):
They are in Connecticut against the Connecticut Sun first sellout,
rob g you say that in twenty years, right, it's a.
Speaker 3 (16:27):
First home opener sellout for the Connecticut Sun in twenty
one seasons.
Speaker 5 (16:32):
It's gotta be is that the first sellout period?
Speaker 3 (16:34):
Like you sell out eighty three hundred?
Speaker 5 (16:37):
Is that the number?
Speaker 3 (16:39):
Yeah? So it's a smaller arena, but they sold it out.
So tonight's game sold eight? Okay? Eight? Nine, ten? All right?
Speaker 5 (16:50):
Puts it up fifty dollars night or no? This is
just people buying tickets.
Speaker 4 (16:54):
Caitlyn Clark, rob they are late. I guess midway through essent,
midway through the third quarter. Fifty nine forty seven, Connecticut
leading Caitlyn Clark ten points, one assist, three steals on
(17:14):
three of ten, shooting two of seven from three rob
seven turnovers. And the interesting thing too, her teammate Aliah Boston,
who was the Rookie of the Year last year. She
only has four points in the game. And I don't
know if you guys saw it, if you're watching it,
(17:36):
it looked like Aliah Boston. She was definitely she was
talking to Caitlyn Clark about something as they were walking
into the locker room at halftime.
Speaker 3 (17:46):
But it was a spirited talk.
Speaker 4 (17:48):
It wasn't really a conversation because Clark was just listening.
But whatever Boston was telling her, she was spirited about it. So, Rob,
what are your thoughts on this debut and what this
could I mean, it's one game, but you know what
this could mean for the w NBA and all the
(18:09):
buzz around the Caitlin Clark.
Speaker 5 (18:11):
I mean, it's one game, but she has to christ people.
She's built up.
Speaker 1 (18:18):
Uh, I must see kind of persona and game logo, threes,
the long three, stuff that got people juices flown. This
wasn't just like she's just playing kind of pedestrian basketball
or doing stuff that everybody else was doing. She was
Steph Stephan the dress, you know, right, and that's what
(18:40):
made her. Uh, people like want to turn in.
Speaker 3 (18:46):
What's that? She just made turnover number eight? My goodness, gracious,
she was driving to the whole.
Speaker 1 (18:51):
All right, I'm gonna say it. She had more turnovers
than Betty crock or how's that is.
Speaker 3 (18:55):
That at least better than a bakery? Okay, you're always
saying that, all.
Speaker 1 (19:00):
Right, Betty Crocker, but you get my point, Chris, like, like,
it's gotta be of that ILK, that's what people want
to see. I'm not saying that because this happened that
nobody's going to the next game or whatever, but that's
the kind of stuff that people are looking for from her.
This will be disappointing, all the turnovers, not making shots.
(19:21):
It could be nerves her first game. It's different between
the preseason and finally playing, you know, for.
Speaker 5 (19:27):
Real, and and and it all counts.
Speaker 1 (19:30):
But I don't think like, oh my god, you know,
people are not going to show up to the next
game because of this.
Speaker 3 (19:37):
No, I hear you.
Speaker 4 (19:38):
And it is one game, so we obviously you don't
want to bury her. I'll say this though, rob in
college basketball with women right now, every game she played
at Iowa was an event, right particularly in the tournament.
(20:01):
I mean, and some of that's the nature of college basketball.
There are, you know, fewer games, there's alumni that's invested
in the school, the student body obviously invested in the school,
and it just has that feel of every game is
(20:23):
more important than every game in the pros. And I
gotta be honest, watching this game, I don't feel the
same buzz that I felt.
Speaker 3 (20:36):
And this isn't even just necessarily based on her performance.
Speaker 4 (20:40):
Just there's just the same buzz right that surrounded her
college games.
Speaker 3 (20:46):
You get what I'm saying, Like, but Chris, I see it,
Like look.
Speaker 1 (20:49):
At the difference, the arena smaller, like like it doesn't
have this is just a one of whatever how many
games they play, thirty games or whatever.
Speaker 5 (20:59):
It is, roady game one of forty. This isn't for
a tournament with Chris. It's winner go home, right, Like there's.
Speaker 1 (21:06):
A there's a that that hypes everything else up, Like
like like whenever there's single elimination, you know that the
game is urgent, people are watching it. Is she gonna do?
Is she gonna deliver? Is she gonna have a bad night?
Is she gonna make a big three? Is she gonna
walk into a logo three to win?
Speaker 5 (21:23):
Again?
Speaker 4 (21:23):
Like there's a lot more riding. Yeah, it just it
doesn't feel the same. And I'll say this, and it's
really not fair to her, but and it's not fair
to ask her to carry the league, but rob they
need her to tear it up. The w NBA needs
her to get busy. Like her having your typical growing
(21:48):
pains of a rookie maybe averaging fourteen and seven or whatever,
you know, but not you know, not really tearing the
league up. Guess what, it's not that's not going to
take it to the next level that the w NBA thinks,
you know, has counted on her doing. It's just not
(22:12):
I don't know that the public is gonna have the
patience to watch her go through these growing pains.
Speaker 3 (22:19):
I just don't. I don't know that they're gonna do that.
Speaker 4 (22:22):
Rob, And I think that she's they need her and
again it's not fair, but they need her to really
go out there.
Speaker 3 (22:30):
And do damage, and she may not be able to
do it.
Speaker 4 (22:35):
I think they got they She's not the first great
player to play in the w n B. A Diana
Trozi hasn't like taken the league, you know, carried the
league to some great heights.
Speaker 3 (22:50):
Lisa Leslie, Cheryl.
Speaker 4 (22:52):
Swoops, Sue Bird, we could go on. None of them
have been able to like make the game the capture
everyone's imagination. And also Rob, because there's people maybe for
ESPN that you know, they're relishing the w NBA, you know,
and and all the buzz that Caitlyn Clark's brought to
(23:15):
women's basketball, and I get it, but Rob, even ESPN,
all the stops that they've pulled out for Caitlyn Clark, right,
and people at the game, you know there, they got
their whole set up at the game and they're.
Speaker 3 (23:29):
Doing the halftime. It's over the top, right. They didn't
do that.
Speaker 4 (23:32):
They want they might want to jump on other They
didn't do that for the other great players. They didn't
do that for all the other great you know, college
women that went Candice Parker because.
Speaker 5 (23:44):
They didn't have right numbers.
Speaker 1 (23:47):
So ESPN and rightfully so, as a media company in
the TV network, they think there's something hot, you push it.
Let's see if we can get numbers out of this.
Let's see if the w NBA hasn't been getting numbers
for decades. Let's see if maybe, just maybe she ticks
the needle up where we're in the black Chris that like,
(24:08):
we finally got numbers that we can sell and maybe
make some money off this.
Speaker 5 (24:12):
You know what I mean, Like like like.
Speaker 4 (24:17):
Yeah, but you're gonna have to get busy. It's similar
to lines O Ball. Remember the buzz about him and
then he didn't deliver obviously, and it just faded away.
Wimby rob People were down on Wimby after his first
you know game and then he you know, he obviously
delivered this season, and so that it really is riding
(24:39):
on that.
Speaker 3 (24:41):
And you could say, like Rob g paying.
Speaker 4 (24:44):
Women's basketball, this might be a sign Rob that they're
actually really much better than we expected. Like there is
a huge, you know gap between the w n b
A and big time college basketball for women, just like
there is between college basketball for men and the NBA.
(25:07):
So that shows that, you know what, these other WNBA
players are nice, But is that going to help the
popularity of the sport.
Speaker 3 (25:16):
No, they need her.
Speaker 5 (25:19):
To be like they need her to be.
Speaker 1 (25:21):
They need her to be the Harlem Globe trotter, something
that Chris, you just haven't seen and you want to see.
And every city she goes in they pack the place
because they want to see her do something special through
something a logo three. My god, look at what she did.
Look at the how deep she was on that one.
That was amazing. She just scored thirty five points and
(25:42):
she had thirteen threes or whatever it is. Chris, you
know what, I'm just like, like, that's what people are
looking for. Not a nice game. She had fourteen points
on fifteen shots. No one's gonna go back for that.
Speaker 3 (25:55):
Yeah, And I think, look, you would think that even
if she doesn't.
Speaker 4 (25:58):
Have a great rookie or you know, I'm sure she'll
have a good rookie season for a rookie, right, but
if she doesn't, like have an all star type season, sure,
eventually I would think get to that level.
Speaker 3 (26:12):
But are people willing to wait? You know? Maybe, and
maybe they even won't wait.
Speaker 4 (26:17):
But maybe if she ever dominates the WNBA like she's
dominated college basketball, even if it's four years from now,
five years from now, maybe people will go back. Who knows,
but somewhat disappointed at least so far.
Speaker 5 (26:32):
Debut.
Speaker 3 (26:32):
They're down sixty five to fifty seven.
Speaker 4 (26:34):
Rob At the end of the third quarter, she she's
got twelve points now to assist three of ten, shooting
an eight turnover.

Speaker 7 (27:08):
Going on, brother, That's how you guys do that doing great?
You good, I'm good. Just uh the weird slightly slowed
down period of the NFL that uh for what week
or two.
Speaker 1 (27:23):
You can figure out to make up some stories to
keep it going for the next four months.
Speaker 7 (27:27):
No, we got the schedule release tomorrow.
Speaker 4 (27:29):
Oh yeah, well you wrote you wrote a great story
today about Dak Prescott and the Cowboys. I have been
under the impression like they want to do the Cowboys
want to get this thing done, but they want him
to take below a below market?
Speaker 3 (27:47):
What is below market? We saw what Jared Goff signed for.
Speaker 4 (27:51):
Is it less than Golf got or in that neighborhood.
Speaker 7 (27:58):
Look, they're never going to say it public, but yeah,
you know, I think they would like to be able
to figure out a way to get a deal done
with Dak. That would give them a little additional breathing
room to work something out with Micah Parsons, work something
out with Ceedee Lamb. You know. I think they also
(28:18):
have some you know, future extensions that they're they're looking at,
you know, Tyler Smith, they got to do next year.
So you know, again, they're not going to come out
and say it, but I think they would like to
have a little bit of a gift back, you know,
from Dak, not necessarily have him be the highest paid
player in the NFL. And you know, when you ask
(28:42):
people like who's dug in here, I thought it was
Stephen Jones because of the issues that Stephen Jones and
Todd Franz had had prior to this with with Dak
Steel And you know, they've always kind of felt a
step behind in Dak negotiations that you know, there was
a time they could have extended him for twenty five
million dollars, then it became thirty and then it was
forty and yeah, and you know, so now it's it
(29:07):
feels like the same situation where once they took the
ability to franchise him out of the deal that he signed,
it shifted all this leverage into Dak's corner. And realistically,
I think after year two of the four year deal
they needed to start to talk to them because if
they were going to get to year three, uh, you know,
(29:28):
I think there was going to be some reticence on
the part of Dax Camp, particularly if he flourished in
year three, to not at least look at free agency
and see what the options were out there, and yeah,
I think I think Jerry's been from the public statements
they've made, they've definitely been more in the backseat than
I think Dax can't expect it. So, you know, last
(29:50):
when I talked to these folks a year ago, it
was like, we're not worried about it. It's going to
get done. Both sides know what's got to be done,
you know. And I saw I just kind of was like,
all right, I'll take it, you know, take them at
their word. And then as things progressed into this offseason
that that seemed to change. And I think it's just
because Dallas now is sitting there staring at having to
(30:12):
pay Pete Lamb the top wide receiver contract on the market,
which they'll have to do when he comes up, you know,
or when they get that done. Micah Parsons is a
guy that they're going to probably have to pay thirty
five million dollars a year too. And I don't think they,
you know, thought they'd find themselves into in a position
where they're like, Okay, we're gonna have to pay top
of the market quarterback, top of the market wide receiver,
top of the market edge rusher, and probably a top
(30:37):
five ish offensive tackle contract, you know, next year.
Speaker 4 (30:42):
So it looks like, I mean, they said they were
going to be all in, but it's to me it's
been a bad offseason for them.
Speaker 3 (30:49):
They obviously lost you know, several offensive linemen.
Speaker 4 (30:51):
Now they they restocked in the draft, but those guys
will be young. They have they don't have, you know,
a great running back at this good.
Speaker 5 (31:03):
I mean, because he was cheap and they didn't have
a running back.
Speaker 3 (31:06):
Right and Zeke obviously can't carry the low.
Speaker 4 (31:09):
So my thing is, from the outside looking in, Charles,
it looks like they're almost saying, okay, Dak, show us
what you can do. And he had and they've given
him like less to work with than he had last year.
Is that fair that they're like, okay, if you if
you're that type of guy that's going to be the
best highest paid quarterback in the league, then show us
(31:32):
that you can carry us like a Mahomes, like a
Josh Allen, like a Lamar Jackson. Is that fair because
it looks like they they've given him less.
Speaker 3 (31:42):
To work with.
Speaker 7 (31:43):
I think they're I think people there are people in
the organization that want to see the players that they're
going to pay top money to come through in the
most vital moments. And what I mean by that is,
you know, when they get to the playoffs, DA's got
to play. You know, he's either got to play at
that MVP level he was playing at during the course
(32:05):
of the season, or you know, a notch above it.
Micah Parsons is another one too, by the way, Like
he is a guy that some people in the organization
are like, he's been great during the regular season, he's
also disappeared a couple of times, and we really needed
him to be there in the postseason. And and I
you know, I think that bothers them a little bit
that they can't get sort of what they deem to
(32:26):
be breakthrough performances from players that they're going to have
to pay contracts to who has to be breakthrough, you know,
players they have to They can't not live up to
that money after they're signed to it. So, you know,
in terms of whether or not they're giving him less
to work with, you know, I don't know, running it's
(32:47):
felt like a running back committee situation there, and I
don't bring Zeke back. Of course, it's cheap, it's going
to be a rotation. It's kind of felt like it's
been a rotation and for being honest about it, the
last couple of years. Anyway, the wide receiver position is
definitely once you get past Brandon Cooks, you know, there's
not a ton of depth there or particularly exceptional depths
(33:07):
beyond you know one and two. Uh, they need Jake
Ferguson to take a really big step forward because they're
they're not, i think, getting enough out of the tight
end position. Offensive line. That's the one area offensive line
we'll see. I'm very curious to see, you know, what
this looks like. Not that they've had Tyron Smith over
the last few years. It's not like he's been there
(33:28):
one hundred percent of the time, but he is definitely
an anchoring person on that group in that locker room.
And you know, now you're you're talking about bringing in
a rookie at tackle, you know, there could be some shuffling.
I still think potentially on that offensive line in terms
of you know, is Tyler Smith is going to be
flatted in a guard like you know, could they flip
(33:49):
flop some some guys around? So I think from an
offensive line standpoint, it's probably a little bit of of
a mix and match to see you know what comes
together and can't. But I look overall, I don't think
there's any question their team was at its peak of talent.
I think last year, I think when you looked at
that roster, you were like, Okay, you can probably go
(34:12):
back two decades with this team, and it matches up
with any of the best they've ever had. They really
need to break through this year.
Speaker 1 (34:18):
And then they had won sixteen straight home games going
into that playoff game against Green Bay.
Speaker 7 (34:24):
Yeah, and then they I mean, like the Green Bay
I was at that game. I covered the game. I
couldn't believe how bad, uh it just just to watch
them just get absolutely paddled against a To me, it
looked like I watched that game, like Dallas feels completely
tight and green Bay feels like it's like we got nothing.
This is total house money. You know, you had Jordan
(34:46):
Love making some throws where you're like, I mean, he
looked loose.
Speaker 3 (34:52):
Great.
Speaker 7 (34:52):
You know, the wide receivers were given the secondary major fits.
Michael Parsons was a non factor in that game whatsoever.
Dan Quinn, you know, the defensive coordinator is obviously now
the head coach in Washington looked like he was kind
of out of sorts. So I think what's really setting
up here to me that's interesting is you know, you
got Dak going into the last year of his contract.
(35:13):
You got Mike McCarthy going in the last year of
his contract. I absolutely think that if something doesn't if
there's not something that advances beyond what happened last year,
and I really think it's got to be like a
Detroit situation. You got to get to the title game,
you got to push and be on the verge of it,
you know, be on the verge of being a super
Bowl team, or you know, Mike's going to be gone.
(35:36):
And I wouldn't be surprised that this is the Bill
Bellis team. I wouldn't be surprised if you know, Dak's
not the quarterback, and then you see really what it's
going to be. You take away the head coach and
the quarterback, especially a quarterback of Dax ilk who was
in the MVP running last year, it's a rebuilt. Like
that's a rebuilt on offense.
Speaker 3 (35:52):
Right all right? That Charles Roborts
Speaker 7 (35:55):
Than you absolutely guys, tell you a night
