Let's get this, punies, you're listening to Fox Sports Radio.
Speaker 3 (00:29):
It is the Eye Couple. I'm Chris. He's Rob our
number two. We are broadcasting live.
Speaker 1 (00:35):
From the tirereg dot Com studiostirek dot com will help
you get there.
Speaker 3 (00:40):
They've got an unmatched selection, fast, free shipping, free road
hazard protection, and more than ten thousand recommended installers. Tirereg
dot com is the way tirebines should be now. We
announced earlier and it's all over the news and television
and everyone where. The legendary basketball player and broadcaster Bill
(01:05):
Walton passed away today at seventy one years old of cancer.
We're going to talk about him, Rob and I at
the bottom of the hour, and then we don't usually
do this, but we will have a second round of
calls this hour for you to weigh in and give
(01:27):
your thoughts on Bill Walton. So we'll take our normal
calls at five twenty Pacific eight twenty eastern on the
topic we're about to start in a few moments, and
then we will give you a chance to call in
if you want to say pay tribute or something about
(01:47):
Bill Walton.
Speaker 1 (01:49):
So we're gonna do that this hour, but rob, let's start.
Speaker 2 (01:52):
I'm always hopeful Chris, that when people die like this
like Bill Walton, that younger people don't really know him
as a player or just know him that he's seen
him on ESPN will take time to really find out
about people, you know what I mean, Like a lot
of times people when people are a lot people don't
know they look at this guy, Look who's this big,
(02:12):
goofy guy on ESPN seriously and they don't and they
don't really know the history or no, and.
Speaker 3 (02:19):
It's history real too, Let's just keep it real. There
are and maybe up until recently this kind of ties
into what we're about to talk about. Do you think
I'm wrong when I say people probably look at Bill
Walton and then think, oh, he was this big white guy.
Speaker 1 (02:40):
He couldn't play that right, right he was? Yeah, he wasn't.
Speaker 3 (02:44):
He played in he couldn't do nothing now, you know, man,
Bill Walton was awesome and hopefully now when you look
at Jokic and you look at Luca, and you look
at some of these other great uh European players, but
let they're white.
Speaker 1 (03:01):
They're white, all right, you'll see that.
Speaker 3 (03:05):
Yeah, there were some great white players back in the day,
and there are some today now, Rob, we're trying to
find some American was now chat Holmgren. I think he's
gonna be a star.
Speaker 1 (03:15):
He's not yet. He'd be the first. Well we'll see
how big of a star.
Speaker 2 (03:19):
Right.
Speaker 3 (03:19):
There hadn't been a huge white American star probably since
and Stockton was not a celebrity, but he was a
great player, John Stockton. But anyway, Rob, we were taking
you and I were looking at some topics to you know,
talk about tonight, and we had we've talked about.
Speaker 1 (03:39):
Kinda there was some.
Speaker 3 (03:42):
Uh skepticism to put it nicely, about Nicola Jokic, Right,
he can't be the best player in the world and
things like that.
Speaker 2 (03:56):
Chris Evan Turner watching was like watching baseball of them,
which is his right.
Speaker 3 (04:06):
When they lost to Minnesota, he said, I don't ever
want to see him play again. It's like watching baseball,
And so we were saying, Rob, look, I I think
I'm leaning toward pick in Dallas to win the championship
if they do win the chap, whether I pick him
(04:26):
or not. But if they do win the championship, Rob,
do you think there will be an argument? I don't
know if I'll feel like Luca's better than no, you
know what, Probably not, but I do think they will
be an argument for that.
Speaker 1 (04:40):
But go ahead.
Speaker 2 (04:41):
The amni thing immediately is no m vps, just no
MVPs yet. And I'm not saying that that's the end
all be all, but if me, that would be more
I hear you not, That's all I'm just saying. I
was saying that I would say this about that because
that's fair, but I.
Speaker 3 (04:58):
Would say that that.
Speaker 1 (05:00):
Would be more of a historical rank.
Speaker 3 (05:04):
Like so, so, if if something happened and neither of
them could play after this season, Luca wins the championship,
like you said, because Jokic has the three m vps,
he would be.
Speaker 1 (05:14):
Ranked higher than Luca.
Speaker 3 (05:15):
I'm just saying no right now, like you know what
I mean, like the best, could there be an argument
that the guy playing the best basketball or the best
player in the world right now is Luca Doches. And
let me say this before you answer. If Boston wins, there,
to me, there will be no argument that Jason Tatum's
(05:36):
best player in the world. Would you agree with that?
Speaker 2 (05:40):
I don't know.
Speaker 3 (05:42):
Really, because I think Jason Tatum is good enough. I
just don't think he's as good as Yokio.
Speaker 2 (05:48):
I'm just saying that he is. No, I'm saying if
because I missing Boston wins.
Speaker 3 (05:56):
If Boston wins the championship, do you think there will
be an argument that Jason.
Speaker 1 (06:01):
Tatum is Oh, I got you know that. We'll not
be an all care about that.
Speaker 2 (06:05):
I thought you meant I thought you meant he would
be the best player. I was like, oh, okay, that's
what I was saying. Okay, I'm with you, right, Okay.
Speaker 3 (06:12):
I think if, honestly, if Anthony Edwards is one, I mean,
I think some people would have tried to make that.
I don't think he's better than Jokic. We'll see, is
he ever that one day?
Speaker 1 (06:23):
Who knows?
Speaker 3 (06:23):
But yeah, but I think Luka Rob, I do think
there could be an argument made.
Speaker 1 (06:30):
I'm not sure right now. I feel Jokic, I don't
know that.
Speaker 3 (06:33):
I'd say Luca, but they're similar in that, you know,
I mean, neither one is what we you know, what
we term athletic right nowadays is about athletics is viewed
as being able to run fast, very quick and jump high,
and neither of them is that. And we were wondering,
(06:55):
Rob if the people that don't like Jokic and don't
think he he should be viewed as the best player
in the world, do they have the same issue with Luca.
Speaker 2 (07:04):
That's a real big question Chris on how because you
talk about some of this stuff. As good as Luca
is and how he's been you know, questionable at one point,
you know, defensively his body putting on weight, you know
what I mean, he's not a leaper. I mean, there's
a lot of stuff that people can look at Luca.
He's a bad boy. We already know about the numbers,
(07:26):
Chris and all that he's put together. But some of
the criticism about, uh, the Joker, you could criticize Luca
about as well. And that's why I just wonder what
would be the difference if you weren't that, if you
weren't that cool with the Joker? How are you going
to be cool with Luca. And then the other part
(07:46):
is Luca as a guy uh uh at one of
the all time greats who's won a championship before, you
know what I mean with him, whereas Luca whereas a
uh the joke at Yoka, jok Chris had none of that,
I had no all star on his team. I mean,
I just when I look at it, I just wonder, well,
(08:08):
if people will embrace Luca the way that they Maybe
not everybody. I'm not trying to paint a generalization brush,
but not everybody of the people didn't embrace the joker.
Speaker 3 (08:21):
No, I hear you, And I think if the Mavericks
win it, and if it does become a discussion, I
think you brought up one point in Yokic just favor
the MVPs. I think now, like you said, neither's great defensively.
(08:41):
I think Jokis probably is better defensively just because of
his size, you know, but neither's really great defensively.
Speaker 1 (08:48):
Luca's gotten better, they both, you know.
Speaker 3 (08:51):
They Luca's just putting forth more effort now and because
of his strength, because of his smarts, he's become a
decent jokicch I think is probably a little more effective
on the defensive end. But you brought up what it
would be a big argument in Jokic's favor Rob, which
(09:13):
is he hasn't had Yeah, I mean, as good as
Jamal Murray is, he's not Kyrie Irving. And you know,
Jamal is very clutch. And another thing about Jamal Rob
is he's he's very injury prone. And even during these
playoffs he was banged up, and that heck, maybe if
(09:34):
he I don't know what he played at, was he
ninety five?
Speaker 1 (09:39):
He's healthy? Right, maybe they win it.
Speaker 3 (09:42):
But I do think Rob now defense is a legitimate
thing if people want to bring that up about Joannis,
because I think, I mean, we're talking about if Luca wins,
maybe he's the best player in the world.
Speaker 1 (09:56):
I think these are probably the two best players, jokicch
and Luca in the world. Like Yannis is better defensively
by light.
Speaker 3 (10:05):
Years ahead of both of them defensively, but his offense,
he doesn't have nearly the offensive skill that they have.
Rob and Embiid's issue is you just Embiid is phenomenal,
but he just can't. I mean, he's banged up every
year come playoff time is Luke every midule a conference final?
Speaker 1 (10:24):
Is Luca likable? Likable Chris or.
Speaker 4 (10:28):
Or not?
Speaker 1 (10:29):
What your just your opinion.
Speaker 3 (10:32):
I have heard your marketability.
Speaker 2 (10:35):
I know, I know you you love his game and
we talked about that, so that's not an issue. I'm
just talking about, well, likability is he is?
Speaker 1 (10:43):
I think you know him.
Speaker 3 (10:45):
I don't know him enough, I think, and we've talked
about this, and some of it, probably Rob is probably culture.
I mean if I was in a country and learn
their language and it was my second or third language,
and you know what I mean, I wasn't as comfortable
with the culture.
Speaker 1 (11:02):
I don't know that I'd let my hair hang that
hair down, so to speak.
Speaker 3 (11:07):
You're probably, you know, at times, really just trying to
make sure you say the right thing and and all that.
So that might be somewhat of an issue. But I
think he is likable. He certainly hasn't done anything to
make him unlikable, right, And I think people might like
the trash talk. You saw how he trash talk Rudy
(11:28):
Gobert trash talk the fans after he hit that game
winner in Game two, and at the very least Rob,
because you've seen the commercials with Jokic and Peyton Watson,
his teammate in Denver, is in them with him.
Speaker 1 (11:45):
You know, they're at the pool side, they're in a
hotel with a horse and all that.
Speaker 3 (11:49):
At the very least, you could do things like that
with Luka, don't you think, Because you know, Jokic didn't
say in a ton he just kind of, you know,
being there very I mean.
Speaker 1 (12:01):
He says a few things, but you know, you could
do things like that with Lucas.
Speaker 3 (12:04):
So yeah, I think he I think he's marketing and
the dude is so great that, you know, I think
that could override.
Speaker 1 (12:12):
Because he win. He's not like Tim Duncan.
Speaker 3 (12:14):
He's got more personality, don't you think than a Duncan
or something.
Speaker 1 (12:18):
Tim Duncan was a wet blanket. I mean really it was.
And you know it's interesting.
Speaker 2 (12:28):
I didn't know Tim very well, or I don't know
many people did Chris now other than the people like
in San Antonio Rid.
Speaker 3 (12:35):
Who were around him all the time. I don't remember
that jokester. You know, his teammates, you know, with his
teammates and all that, but he never let any of
that out route And he was about as dull as
a player gets.
Speaker 2 (12:51):
I mean, it was just he was just cool being
like not saying got his flip flops on him taking
easy like there was not a peep. I'm telling you,
I can't even remember a SoundBite from him, Chris like that,
why when he got on left or you know what
I mean, like oh, Jim Duncan's globe or nothing. This
(13:13):
whole career, I don't remember anything, not at all, other
than him not being in the game that game in Miami.
Speaker 1 (13:20):
Like I hit that shot to force Game seven.
Speaker 3 (13:25):
But yeah, I think he I think Luca could be
marketble and I also think Rob if he does win
the championship. You know, I just think you get a
little more comfortable. He's still only twenty five years old.
Even if you're an American at twenty five, you might
just not be out of your shell yet, you know
what I mean. So I would imagine more of his
personality would come out. And so yeah, I mean I
(13:51):
definitely think he's he's marketable, and his game is just incredible,
as is Jokiches. So this is interesting. Let's throw that
out to the listeners. Eight seven to seven ninety nine
on Fox. Do you think if Luka Doncic wins this championship,
that there would be an argument that he is the
(14:13):
best player in the world right now. For the most part,
it's viewed as Nicola Jokic, some might say Yannis, some
might at probably very few, but maybe a couple saying
Beid and I think Luca would certainly be in the
discussion if he can close this thing out. Not saying
(14:34):
I'd go with him. We'll see how things play out,
but do you think there'd be an argument? Eight seven,
seven ninety nine.

If the Dallas Mavericks go ahead and win the championship,
and we assume Luka Doncics will lead them, is there
an argument? Do you think there will be an argument
that he has surpassed nicolea Jokic as the best player
(16:21):
in the NBA or whoever else you think might be
the best player?
Speaker 1 (16:25):
Eight seven seven ninety nine Fox Your thoughts?
Speaker 2 (16:27):
All right, let's kick it off Chris with Greg in Denver.
You're on the couple of Fox Sports Radio. What's up Greg?
Speaker 5 (16:35):
Not too much? How you guys doing how are you good?
Speaker 6 (16:39):
I mean, obviously I got a little your kids pull,
but uh, you know, you know what's cool about yo bitch?
He doesn't care if he won. He didn't care.
Speaker 1 (16:49):
Nita does the joker. I agree both of them.
Speaker 3 (16:51):
That's what joker are. You're right, he totally don't care.
Speaker 6 (16:55):
Yeah, I agree with that, But he's also he's also friend.
He's also friends right with.
Speaker 1 (17:04):
Oh yeah, yeah, they're probably.
Speaker 5 (17:07):
Why would he not want it?
Speaker 6 (17:08):
You know what all I gotta say is I don't
want Minnesota to win this. I as long as Minnesota
does to win, great. You came up with a way
to beat the Nuggets one time. We're coming back to
next year.
Speaker 1 (17:20):
See, I would think you would.
Speaker 3 (17:22):
I would think you would want Denver or Minnesota to
win it, because then the Nuggets will have lost to
the eventual champion.
Speaker 1 (17:30):
To me, it looks a little worse for him.
Speaker 3 (17:32):
I'm not saying it's a huge thing, but it looks
a little worse than the team that beat you.
Speaker 1 (17:37):
I get swept.
Speaker 7 (17:39):
You know what.
Speaker 8 (17:39):
You know what I want I want.
Speaker 6 (17:41):
I want the Minnesota to have no no good things
in their lives for the rest of the year. I
wanted to get swept and to go home and trade trade.
Speaker 5 (17:52):
Cat and.
Speaker 9 (17:56):
Cat.
Speaker 3 (17:58):
You just better get something for Cat. I mean, you
don't give him away. He ain't making you friends with
his thirteen percent three point shooting.
Speaker 2 (18:06):
Now, no, primo, is that south What is that? South central?
I can't yes, south central? South central? Man, what's up?
You're on the odd couple of Fox Sports Radio.
Speaker 5 (18:16):
Yeah, let me say this, man. We try to get away.
We always try to get away from the black white thing,
especially when we're on the air we're talking to a
lot of people. But I just thought about the thing
about man Luca. Luca even surprised me.
Speaker 8 (18:33):
Man.
Speaker 5 (18:34):
He is such a great basketball player. It is amazing. Man,
it's amazing the shots that he hits, the things that
he does. But but but getting away from from liking
him as far as my personal opinion or my background
or or anything like that, the conversation, he's not a
(18:59):
very likable dude.
Speaker 10 (19:00):
He really Why you say that, Well, he's.
Speaker 6 (19:04):
Crying all the time.
Speaker 1 (19:06):
That's you. That's fair.
Speaker 5 (19:07):
You breathe on him.
Speaker 9 (19:08):
That fair.
Speaker 5 (19:10):
The shot he's crying.
Speaker 3 (19:11):
Now, most players in the league today cry to the rest.
But he's just about the worst.
Speaker 5 (19:17):
Chris.
Speaker 1 (19:18):
That's a part of the and Primo. That's real talk, right,
and he needs to chill.
Speaker 2 (19:22):
He needs to chill on that because it will make
people go he's a big baby. I hate watching him
even though it's a great player.
Speaker 1 (19:28):
Right, No, that's fair.
Speaker 5 (19:30):
Let me let me drop this last lug again, this
last lug. I've been listening to your callers and and
all the white guys that called in. They don't want
Minnesota to win. And I'm I'm sitting here part and
I'm thinking to myself, Minnesota is a young team with
(19:51):
maybe the new face of basketball with Anthony Hairwar was
coming up. But for what reason do they not want
Minnesota to either beat Denver or Dallas. What is the
reason other than some kind of stupid racial thing.
Speaker 3 (20:10):
I don't I'm not gonna little racial don't. I mean, yeah,
I'm not gonna suit now. It could be you just
don't like their team, You aren't the way they play,
you like Lukes, you.
Speaker 1 (20:19):
Don't feel like Minnesota. Chris has put it up the
all the one you have to like that was the
issue that some people had.
Speaker 3 (20:27):
Or you could be mad Rob that they beat your team.
Speaker 1 (20:30):
Yeah, I'm not jumping to that. Concludion.
Speaker 2 (20:33):
No, Ronnie in Denver, you're in the odd couple of
Fox Sports Radio. What's up, Ronnie?
Speaker 6 (20:39):
What's good?
Speaker 5 (20:40):
Oh?
Speaker 11 (20:41):
Good, good good?
Speaker 7 (20:43):
Yeah.
Speaker 10 (20:44):
I think John considered the best in the world.
Speaker 3 (20:50):
You said he won't be. No, who do you think
is the best play of the world? You think is Jogic?
Speaker 12 (20:55):
You really can't stay just yet. The season done with
the cards to debate tuck.
Speaker 10 (21:01):
At foreign horn people, period.
Speaker 11 (21:05):
Yes, everybody.
Speaker 8 (21:06):
Yeah.
Speaker 2 (21:08):
Shoot, started to say, all right, thanks Rodny, appreciate it.
Speaker 1 (21:14):
He just wanted to come on and think out loud.
Speaker 2 (21:18):
John in New Hampshire think about it, got John New
Hampshire couple of Fox Sports Radio.
Speaker 12 (21:26):
I need a little bit of what that guy was on.
Speaker 2 (21:27):
I know.
Speaker 1 (21:28):
I mean we were asking his opinion.
Speaker 10 (21:31):
He was like, oh what, all right, Well, I'll say this.
Speaker 12 (21:36):
It's always a pleasure to call into the best national
sports talk radio show in the country.
Speaker 8 (21:41):
You guys.
Speaker 12 (21:43):
As far as this is, I think we can kind
of turn back the clock twenty five years once Jordan retired,
before Lebron became the best player in the world. I
don't know, around two thousand and seven or so. It
was a seven eight year gap where it was fluid, right,
if the Lakers wanted was Shack or it was Kobe,
if the Spurs want it was Duncan. I think it's
going to be a fluid situation for the next half
dozen years. And I'm kind of on board with Chris.
(22:05):
I think once the Spurs, if they try to win
championships and we know what the feeling is for m
Ba Yaba, he probably will be the guy who will
have a seven eight year run at the best during
in the world. But I think I'm still that it's
going to go back and forth. It was Giannis three
four years ago when he won the Jaiship, then it
was your guest. If Luca pulls it off this year,
he's gonna be the best player. In a lot of
(22:26):
people's opinion. I'm in the Boston area. I don't think
even if the Celtics win, the Tatum can claim we
agree with that.
Speaker 2 (22:33):
Hey, hey, John, let me ask you this, uh going
in where were you in the series? H most people
had the Timberwolves. Where did you Did you like Dallas
or were you on the Timberwolves train? Like most people.
Speaker 12 (22:46):
I hate saying this because it's, you know, after the fact,
I kind of like Dallas only because they have two
supreme closers, and you know, a lot of close games,
you've got Kyrie or Luca that can just winning on
for you exactly. Yeah, and their own, but they can
also set up other players. There's much great passers as well,
and I think Minnesota was maybe a little flat after
(23:07):
beating Denver. This has happened in the past, where a
team upsets the defending champ and then they're kind of
flat the next series. We saw that the last couple
of years. Look, even the Lakers beat the defending champion
Warriors last year and then they just didn't have itcenber So,
I think that that's certainly the case going forward. Guys,
always a pleasure talking with you, and more importantly, always
(23:28):
a pleasure of listening to you.
Speaker 1 (23:29):
Thank you.
Speaker 3 (23:30):
That was a good call, and I think he makes
a great point because you're right, during that era between
Jordan and Lebron, it was kind of, oh, Dunky won it,
he's the best, or Shack wanted. Shack had that dominant
stretch with the three peet rob So, yeah, I think
that was a That was a good call, and I
think one thing I'm looking at in this kind of
(23:52):
era if you will rob of parody, right, this will
be the sixth straight different championship. I kind of want
to see, does does one one of these guys emerge
to dominate the area, maybe win two or three championships Jokic, Luka, Jannis,
somebody else, because I do think we'll see if win
Benyama becomes the guy I think he will. But until then,
(24:15):
will one of these guys, you know, win a few
rings and distance themselves rob from the other top players
right now?
Speaker 1 (24:23):
So that was a good call.
Speaker 3 (24:24):
All right, We're gonna talk about the late great Bill
Walton around the corner and then remember you will have
a chance to call in eight seven, seven ninety nine
on Fox to give us your thoughts on Bill Walton,
who died to day at the age of seventy one
of cancer.
Speaker 1 (24:40):
Here's Kevin Wired with the update. keV.
Speaker 9 (24:42):
Yeah, they're underwigh in Indianapolis, Game four between the Boston
Celtics and Indiana Pacers in this Eastern Conference Final. The
Celtics already ahead in this series three games to none,
so Indiana does need a win to keep their season alive,
and right now, through about nine minutes of the first quarter,
it is the Celtics in front twenty three two twenty
(25:02):
Drew Holiday the leading scorer for both sides in this game,
as he's got eight points off three to three shooting
two to two from beyond the three point ark, and
the Pacers hanging around despite shooting poorly so far. They're
just thirty nine percent, including two to seven from beyond
the three point arc. But they're only down by three
so far, and they are as predicted without Tyrese Halliburton
(25:23):
in a Game three of the Western Conference Finals in
the NHL that's about to get going.
Speaker 3 (25:28):
Puck drops in any moment from now.
Speaker 9 (25:30):
That series tied at one game apiece between the Stars
and the Edmonton Oilers. Major League Baseball only one game
going on right now as we speak, Padres and Marlins
down in San Diego. This has been a pitcher's duel
as this game knotted up at one run apiece. They're
heading to the bottom of the seventh inning. They're stretching
right now at Petco Park. Everything else in Major actually,
(25:50):
we do have one more game coming up in about
an hour Astros and Maryland Mariners up in Seattle, but
everything else in the league has gone final Oriols pound
the Red Sox eleven to three, twins over the Royal
sixty five. Blue Jays beat the White Sox five to one,
and in a game that didn't feature a run being
scored until the eighth inning, the Brewers come alive late
to beat the Cubs five to one. Up in the
(26:10):
Mile High City, it's the Rockies outlast in the Guardians
eight six, Reds hold down the Cardinals three to one,
Nationals beat the Braves eight four, and the Giants in
San Francisco beat the Phillies eight to four. There was
another game that was supposed to be played Dodgers and
Mets over at City Field, but that game has been
postponed because of the rain. They will play a makeup
double header makeup game during a doubleheader tomorrow afternoon.
Speaker 1 (26:33):
Back to you guys, all right, thank you, Kevin and Rob.
We said it.
Speaker 3 (26:39):
Bill Walton passed away today of cancer, seventy one years old.
Speaker 1 (26:46):
What are your thoughts. Did you know Bill personally?
Speaker 11 (26:50):
No?
Speaker 1 (26:50):
No, I did.
Speaker 2 (26:51):
Now you know, I've ran into him a few times
Chris at ESPN, you know what I mean like that,
But I didn't know him, have any kind of relationship
with him.
Speaker 13 (27:00):
Was on.
Speaker 3 (27:00):
I did some shows with him, the ESPN NBA Coast
to Coast comes to mind, and he was very fun
to work. You could see Rob. I mean, he was hilarious.
Uh he never held anything back. He he called my
takes balder dash and poppy cock. I like him, but
(27:24):
in fun, you know, I mean, I loved being on
with him because it was so fun, you know what
I mean. When a guy has that much energy and
it's saying funny stuff and you kind of ribbing each
other going back and forth.
Speaker 1 (27:37):
It was a lot of fun.
Speaker 3 (27:38):
So I'm not gonna act like we were great friends,
but you know, I saw him other times just being
around the NBA and covering the league.
Speaker 1 (27:46):
But really was a fun guy to be around.
Speaker 3 (27:50):
And and we'll talk about him as a player, but
what what are your kind of recollections of him.
Speaker 1 (27:57):
It's funny.
Speaker 2 (27:57):
I remember I've been watching all the see all the
video Chris and all the stuff, and just that bright
red hair. I remember the Crazy Beard and the trail Blazers.
I just remember that Bill Walton. I also remember the
Celtics Bill Walton.
Speaker 3 (28:13):
You know at the end, I was a comeback, right Yeah,
after one sixth man a year on that team, Rob
that many think might be the best ever nineteen eighty
six Celtics.
Speaker 1 (28:22):
Yeap, was that Bill Fitchered the coach in eighty six?
Speaker 2 (28:25):
I think it was Casey Oh to Casey Jones, Okay,
and Chris obviously I know the history of UCLA and
him and Kareem and you know what I mean, and
John Wooden the coach. So I just always kind of
admired his career but always felt like it's a shame
(28:46):
that he could never stay healthy, you know, like like
that was what could have been had that guy ever
been healthy, and we might be talking about him as
as one of those almost certainly a top ten, right, yeah,
almost an iconic figure, but he was career was derailed
for the most part.
Speaker 1 (29:06):
Well, speaking of that career, right, and my first what
are you thinking of more?
Speaker 2 (29:10):
Do you think about him as a just a trail
blazer at UCLA or the Celtics?
Speaker 1 (29:15):
What do you what's the first thing you think about I'll.
Speaker 3 (29:17):
Share why it's a trailblazer because my first year and Rob,
I wonder what your thoughts are on this because when
I was you know, I was born in nineteen sixty eight,
so I'm a little kid in the early seventies and
I'm living in Cincinnati, Ohio, where football and baseball. Even
(29:38):
though I was in a black neighborhood, football and baseball
for us was more.
Speaker 1 (29:44):
We were more into that than basketball.
Speaker 3 (29:46):
And the basketball players I really thought of and were
the biggest fans of were the Harlem Globetrotters. More so
now again I'm a little kid, but more so than
the you know, NBA players. At that time, I was
into the Globetrotters. And so the first year I really
(30:07):
got into the NBA was the first year Doctor J
played in the league, and that was seventy six to
seventy seven, and he became my favorite player and the
reason my first recollection of.
Speaker 1 (30:20):
Walton was that year in the NBA finals and Doctor.
Speaker 3 (30:25):
J had taken the league by storm coming from the
ABA and led the seventy six ers to the championship.
They won the first two games, and I was like
in love with Doctor J. You know, I mean everything,
and yeah, obviously the high flying dunks, the fancy play
and Bill Walton in the Blazers came back rob and
(30:50):
won the next four games and won the series in six,
and I was so upset and even to this day,
and obviously Doctor j has a great legacy, but I
always think, had he won that championship, Robb, he won
two in ABA, he won the one in the NBA
with Moses Malone. But had he won that championship in
(31:10):
seventy seven, Rob, there's probably an argument for Doctor Jay
as a top ten player of all time, and being
that I liked him so much, I always think about that.
But Rob Walton led that team. They swept Kareem and
the Lakers in the playoffs, and that was the check
this out because think about this. If he did this today,
(31:32):
think about what the view talk would be. This was
just his third season in the NBA. His first season
he only played thirty five games. Second season played fifty one,
so this was kind of like his first real full season,
played sixty five games. Led the Blazers to the first
(31:53):
winning season in the history of the franchise. When in
the league their expansion and I think nineteen seventy so
they had played seven years in the league, had never
had a winning record, had never been to the playoffs,
so this is the first time they ever make the playoffs.
They're the youngest team ever to win a championship at
(32:14):
first time.
Speaker 1 (32:14):
Robbie leads him to the championship.
Speaker 3 (32:16):
We're talking about Minnesota and Anthony Ewards paying their dues right,
losing before you win.
Speaker 1 (32:23):
He didn't do that.
Speaker 3 (32:24):
That's how dominant he was. And he was the finals MVP.
And then, like you said, Rob, next year he won
the MVP. Only played fifty eight games with won MVP,
and then Rob four of three of his next four years,
or let me put it this way, in the next
four years of his career, he only played fourteen games,
(32:44):
and three of the years he sat out completely. And
then one year he played fourteen games. And that's really
what derailed his career.
Speaker 2 (32:50):
Rob was just just a foot injury, absolutely because he
was off to a fantastic start and would have Chris,
I agree with you, be concer have one of the
all time greats. But it was derailed. And I just
wonder for people out there eight seven, seven ninety nine
on Fox, what.
Speaker 1 (33:10):
Do you what were your thoughts about him as a broadcast.
Speaker 3 (33:13):
I thought he was a great brocause I was very
disappointed when they took I think it was I don't
know if it was NBC, whatever station was, but remember
Walton and Steve Snapper Jones right, used to be the
you know, color commentators for NBA game.
Speaker 1 (33:30):
I remember that, and I thought they were great.
Speaker 5 (33:32):
Now.
Speaker 3 (33:32):
They would joke back and forth and Snapper would you know,
Bill would say stuff because you know, he was a
stutterer when he was growing up, Rob and one of
the ways they helped him overcome his stuttering was just
say just say something. Don't don't just think about it first,
just say what comes to your mind. And so he
would say stuff, and Snapper Jones withou rib Eman, you know,
(33:56):
snap at him and everything. But I thought they were
a great tandem for the younger people. Rob, And I think,
let me know if you think this is appropriate. I
thought him and Snapper Jones were a lot like Van
Gundy and Mark Jackson.
Speaker 1 (34:10):
Yeah. I remember that was on NBC.
Speaker 2 (34:13):
Steve Steve Trump Jones right, and he was Snapper Jones, yeah,
and he was Chris the Portland He did the port
in local games and then would do NBC for the national.
Speaker 3 (34:23):
YEP And I thought they were great, and I thought
it was a mistake when they took them off, but
he Bill went on and worked college games for ESPN.
Speaker 1 (34:32):
Robin it was a great broadcast. It was a lot
of fun, a lot of fun.
Speaker 3 (34:35):
All right, all right, eight seven, seven ninety nine on Fox,
You're turned away in. What are your thoughts? What do
you remember about Bill Waltson?
Speaker 2 (34:44):
Is it like UCLA? Is it about the Celtics? Is
it about him just being a broadcaster for ESPN and NBC.
Speaker 1 (34:54):
Or or is it the Portland Trailblazers.
Speaker 2 (34:57):
I mean, if I had to think of him in
one thing for real, for me, it would be Portland
with the beard and everything.
Speaker 1 (35:05):
That's what I think about him and.
Speaker 3 (35:07):
Getting dunked on by Doc. But no, I think of
him with Portland and Rob. I'll tell you what I
think that I think clearly the best college player ever
was lou Al Sender or Kareem abdul Jabbar.
Speaker 1 (35:19):
But Walton's on the short list in the conversation just
for college.
Speaker 3 (35:24):
Oh yeah, it was dominated three time Natesmith Award winner
and won two championships.
Speaker 2 (35:29):
It's like Christian lady like as a college player. Was
one of the all time great college Yeah.
Speaker 3 (35:34):
Yeah, all right, eight seven, seven ninety nine, Fox, You'll
turn away in on Bill walk.

On Bill Walton.
Speaker 3 (36:14):
Share your thoughts about the great legend passing today of cancer.
Speaker 2 (36:19):
Chris Allen Lee, who fills in for you, one of
our Odd Couple fill ins here on the show. He
texts me and he said, Bill Walmer Chris nineteen seventy
three NCAA final against Memphis State. He scored forty four
points on twenty one of twenty two from the field. Chris,
twenty one of twenty two from the field, and also
(36:43):
the longest winning streak at UCLA was with.
Speaker 1 (36:46):
Bill Walton, not Kareem. Was that under Bill Walton? Unbelievable?
Speaker 2 (36:50):
Right, Evan from New York Case. We told a call back, Chris.
He called back, You're in the Couple of Fox Sports
Radio listen, you.
Speaker 10 (36:57):
Said serious, and I took death seriously, so I said,
I'm falling back.
Speaker 7 (37:04):
I'm not missing, especially when.
Speaker 10 (37:06):
It comes to this man, Bill Walton. He was unbelievable
talent and let me tell you, guys, something like young man.
But I had an uncle who had told me some
crazy things, and he even told me once that there
was a point in time they were discussing who was
the better center, Bill Wallen or Kareem abdulja Bar.
Speaker 1 (37:30):
Wow.
Speaker 2 (37:31):
Hey, hey Evan, thank you man. Your phone is popping
in and out. I don't know what that is, but
thanks for calling back, and thanks for adding that about
whether it's Bill Walton or Kareem that the conversation. Thanks
heavn for that. Tony in Vancouver, you're on the odd
couple of Fox Sports Radio.
Speaker 1 (37:45):
What's up, Tony.
Speaker 8 (37:47):
Hey, I've been a lucky man in my life. I
Bill Walton was a shame age as I am. I've
seen him many times at the Full Memorial Colisee, him
in Portland with the Blazers and with the Boston Celtics,
even seen him when I was living in Seattle. But
he's one of the few guys that who's off court
(38:11):
greatness was better than his on court greatness. I mean
his ability.
Speaker 3 (38:18):
That's a great that's a great point. Maybe maybe second
only to Barkley.
Speaker 8 (38:27):
Yeah.
Speaker 12 (38:28):
Yeah, former players.
Speaker 1 (38:32):
That made it big as broadcasts. Yes, as far as
NBA players.
Speaker 2 (38:36):
Yeah, I mean pretty big. And when you think about it,
not not everybody makes it to that level, but he did.
Thanks for the call, Tony and Vancouver appreciate it, Steven,
Kansas City.
Speaker 1 (38:45):
You're in the odd couple of Fox Sports Radio.
Speaker 11 (38:47):
What's up, Steve, Yeah, you guys are really really enjoying
the show.
Speaker 1 (38:51):
You know, I thank you.
Speaker 11 (38:52):
I just as a kid, I just remember him primarily
with the Celtics and and you can see five shies
of those brilliant but you know, I watched that documentary
and it was just so satisfying to see him get
that last run with the with the Celtics that you
can tell he was enjoying going to work. That's the
(39:15):
best feeling in the world when you can't wait to
get to work. And with DJ and Chief and Bird
and McHale one of the greatest teams ever and and
he was having a ball and he got to relive
some of that some of that glory everybody should have
that sort of ending of his career.
Speaker 5 (39:32):
It was.
Speaker 13 (39:32):
It was fantastic and he was he was entertaining announcer.
I loved him as play I play, But boy, that
that Celtics run was was something for him. I mean
that that was a lot of pain in his career
and he really ended on.
Speaker 11 (39:45):
The right note, no doubt.
Speaker 2 (39:47):
Thanks Steve, le Squeeze and Cherry one more in North Dakota.
You're in the couple of Fox Sports Radio. What's up, Cherry?
Speaker 7 (39:55):
Jentlemen, I'll go quick number one. It's so cold up
in here in January. The people Chicago think you're tough.
We go to Chicago to get us to work on
our son Tan and warm them up up here. Now,
when it comes to Bill wohlm here's my challenge you.
You kind of stole my thunder the nineteen seventy three
title game, Yes, and any sport championship game, any sport.
(40:17):
Tell me a better performance in the history of sport
twenty one.
Speaker 2 (40:21):
For twenty two from the field. I don't know if
you could get any better than that, I mean, without
being perfect, Chris. I mean, that's an incredible in a
big game, a big game, A huge.
Speaker 3 (40:31):
Performance, no doubt about that. That's a tremendous performance. I
mean to his point, I mean, that's up there with
where Reggie Jackson with the three home three home run,
three pitches mattwell seris some game six forty two, fifteen
and seven. I mean that that's an all time great performance.
There's no question about it. So uh yeah, yeah, now
(40:54):
he was. He was fantastic, Rob, And I'm glad we
took this time yeah, to you know, talk about him
and also give others a chance to weigh in because
it's just unfortunate. And that's that was we mentioned the injuries.
That's what made eighty six so special. Rob when he
(41:15):
was the sixth man on that Celtics team, wasn't only
averaged seven points a game, but he brought something to
that team that really helped him, you know, win that championship.
All right, keep it locked in our left eye, couple
