not the ones in twos, the update or the social media.
I'm all mix mixed upon.

Speaker 3 (03:37):
I know.

Speaker 1 (03:37):
Well, it is happy June teens to you, Martin and
to everybody else. So we're putting in work here on
June teens. Somebody asked me why are you working on Juneteenth?
I said, well, the the best thing I can do
to help black people is to work, you know, So
I'm working, putting in that work. So uh, we're here

(04:00):
to do our thing. My man, Martin Weiss and me,
all right, Mark, let's get right to it. You know
the Boston something. Now, who was your pick in the finals?

Speaker 4 (04:09):
I had the Dallas Mavericks in seven, So I could
have been more wrong.

Speaker 1 (04:13):
I had them in six. You could have been more
wrong like me, I had him in six. So but
obviously the Celtics take them out in five. And here's
the question I want to throw at you, Martin, because
the analytics say one of the most dominant seasons we've
ever seen.

Speaker 2 (04:33):
So I want to ask you.

Speaker 1 (04:34):
And we know that the Celtics are going to extend
and rightly so, I believe Jason Tatum give him a
five year, three hundred and fifteen million dollar contract extension
that will be the biggest contract in the history of
the NBA.

Speaker 2 (04:52):
You got any issues with that, No, I don't have
any issues with it.

Speaker 4 (04:56):
I think that when you watched, I mean you watched
the finals. Obviously, Jalen Brown had the bigger first two games.
I think they were pretty neck and neck in the
final three games are well, skipping game four where Boston
just you know, elected not to show up that day.
But in games three, in games five, I think Tatum
and Brown played at about even.

Speaker 2 (05:16):
Level those games.

Speaker 4 (05:19):
Yeah, but just I think Brown's defensive impact too kind
of boosts him even though his scoring was a little less.
But ultimately I don't have any problem with Jason Tatum
and Jalen Brown getting paid in that level because they've
shown that they are at least over the last this season,
especially that they showed that, look, we can be the
best two players on a champion. We can be the

(05:39):
best two players on a team that can compete. No,
I don't have a problem with it. I also think
that now that the monkey is off of their backs
a little bit, I think they'll play better in the
postseason going forward.

Speaker 1 (05:51):
Well, that leads me into my next question for you.
Do you think they are more likely these Celtics to
be adynat or a one and done championship team.

Speaker 4 (06:05):
Now, I believe me and you define dynasty in the
same way you gotta get three, Yes, you gotta get three.

Speaker 2 (06:11):
You're not.

Speaker 1 (06:12):
Look the Heat that won two in a row with
Lebron d Wade and Chris Bosh, the Pistons who I
know you love who won it with Isaiah Thomas in
eighty nine and ninety and the Houston Rockets with a
Keam Elijua who won it in ninety four ninety five.

Speaker 2 (06:30):
Not dynasties.

Speaker 1 (06:32):
Maybe if you want to call them mini dynasties. But
not full fledged dynasties. So yeah, it's gonna take three
to get you to be a dynasty.

Speaker 4 (06:43):
I have to go they are more likely to be
one and done than dynasty. But I do think that
right now they are the deserving and obvious favorite for
next year. But when you look at the last what
is it the last ten years of NBA.

Speaker 2 (06:59):
Finals, right?

Speaker 4 (07:00):
The last ten years been new champions, right? Yeah, so
last six years been new champions. Last team to go
back to back was Golden State. And so I'm just
the way the league is now. And I don't know
why exactly he was talking about it before Game four
of the NBA Finals, but well, Joel Eenbiid had a

(07:20):
pretty good point and that the second apron is gonna
make it a lot harder for teams to be able
to bring back all their talent, and so like they're
going to have to improve along the margins, as they
have shown an ability to do right this season. They
obviously improved around Tatum and Brown. But what happens when
Drew Holliday is another year older? What happens when now
Derek White is getting paid? You said Jason Tatum is

(07:43):
about to get paid? How much stomach. Does the owner
have to foot that bill is going to be the
reason why I have to say they are more likely to.

Speaker 2 (07:54):
Be won and done than Dynasty.

Speaker 1 (07:56):
But I remember they do have everybody back for next season,
and that's part of the reason why, ultimately I think
they get next.

Speaker 4 (08:02):
Year's like I would have got repeating, I have them repeating.
I mean as of now, three days after the NBA
season ends. Yeah, I have them repeating. And a big
part of that is look at the East, Like look
at the East.

Speaker 1 (08:16):
I mean, well, the East went healthy. Isn't bad, but
I mean not as good as the West, but it's
not if Philly. And remember Philly's got the room to add.
I mean they're gonna go for Paul George. They've got
the room to add a top player or maybe two
top players right to add to Joel Embiid if he's
ever healthy.

Speaker 2 (08:35):
And that's really their biggest question. I think.

Speaker 1 (08:37):
Now, if they're healthy, they're like a legit contender. But
Embeid is never really one hundred percent or close in
the playoffs. And obviously you've got Tyreez Maxie who's just
getting better and better.

Speaker 2 (08:48):
And then Milwaukee.

Speaker 1 (08:50):
I'm if Milwaukee's blood isn't boiling, then I don't know
that y'all should be playing, because I mean, you must
be looking at Boston like number one, we see our
man Drew Holliday went there, got a chip, and whether
it's fair or not, people gonna look at Damian Lillard
and say, man, they got y'all got the worst end

(09:13):
of the deal. And so he Damien should be upset
and ready to roll. Yanni should be ready to roll.
So and then you got the young upstarts. I mean,
the Knicks probably will end up bringing back Randall and
the group as mostly as currently constituted.

Speaker 2 (09:32):
And look, they were.

Speaker 1 (09:34):
Fourteen and two or twelve and two right after Ogiannanobi
signed with Julius Randall healthy. So it's not clear because
some people think Randall can't work with Brunson now, but no,
it worked when they were healthy, and so the Knicks
will be a factor. The Pacers are just getting better
because they're very young. Boston is the clear favorite in

(09:57):
the East for sure, I give you that, but I'm
just if and it might be a big if unfortunately,
But if some of these squads are healthy, I think
they can give them certainly a much tougher challenge than
they did this year.

Speaker 2 (10:11):
And then their Miami, which always.

Speaker 1 (10:13):
Is tough if they're healthy, a tougher challenge, Chris.

Speaker 2 (10:17):
They only lost three games in four rounds three.

Speaker 1 (10:20):
I mean, look, I take nothing away from them because
of the way they ran through Dallas, but I'm not
gonna sit here and shout on them from the rooftops.
This was such a great run through the East. It
was a great run through Dallas the East. Come on
Miami without his best player, Cleveland without his best player
for much of the series, and it's one of its
other all stars, Jared Allen and Indiana. You know, Tyre's

(10:43):
Halliburton banged up. Like to me, the team that's what's
gonna happen.

Speaker 4 (10:48):
Next team that benefit for through all those injuries to
me is the Pacers, because I thought the Pacers should
have lost to the Bucks. If Giannis and Dame Lili
were both playing, I thought that we would see well
advanced out of that first round.

Speaker 1 (10:59):
Because remember the Placers had their weight with Milwaukee in
the first The regular.

Speaker 4 (11:03):
Of all those teams in the East, the only one
that really moves me is the Knicks.

Speaker 2 (11:08):
With the Knicks bringing back Randall. I think that. I mean,
you see Milwaukee.

Speaker 4 (11:13):
They do think about think about what's happened to Milwaukee
since their championship. They're on their second coach fire, I
mean fired Budenholzer and then fired Adrian Griffin and then
again like Joel Embiat again made the point on Twitter,
did like Giannis's fear are Jiannis's anxiety and basically forcing

(11:37):
the trade to get Damian Lillard did that.

Speaker 2 (11:39):
Just to give Boston the champion. How good was Drew?

Speaker 1 (11:42):
Now, Drew was a big help for Boston, no doubt,
but how much of a hellp was he to Milwaukee
last year?

Speaker 2 (11:48):
He was a huge help.

Speaker 1 (11:49):
But what I'm saying really when they got you mean
when they got beat in the first round against Miami
and Jimmy Butler had his way with him. No, I mean, true,
Holliday is great, but he was I think great from
Milwaukee his last year there. He shot poorly in the
first round when they got beat by Miami, and he
couldn't do a thing with Jimmy Butler in what is

(12:11):
his calling card defense.

Speaker 2 (12:13):
So Milwaukee was like, Okay, he's.

Speaker 1 (12:15):
A bit you know, he's on the latter side of
his career. Now, they didn't think he was gonna end
up obviously in Boston. But still, I'm just saying some
of it fit. And he's a perfect fit in Boston.
He doesn't have to do nearly as much. He can
vote you offensively. This was his lowest scoring season in

(12:38):
nearly a decade, twelve points a game, and so he's
a good fit.

Speaker 2 (12:42):
But I'm just saying Milwaukee needed like some more.

Speaker 1 (12:47):
Offense because Giannis obviously can't be the go to guy
because he can't shoot jumpers or free throws. Chris Middleton
is banged up half the time and it's not like
an A level player as good.

Speaker 2 (12:59):
As he is.

Speaker 1 (13:00):
To me, they got to the place where their second
guy well, but the place where they should have improved,
in my opinion is over Chris Middleton, because Chris Middleton
has never been, like you said, a top of the
line guy. Like he happened to be the guy that
was there taking the last shot oftentimes because you can
create his own in a better way of credits own
jump shot than Giannis was able to. But to me,

(13:22):
when I sit and watch that team, even with Damian
Lillard currently constructed, they still need a wing, a.

Speaker 2 (13:28):
Win the athleticism.

Speaker 4 (13:31):
When you say, like Drew Holliday was playing in the
perfect role. Part of that is because they got two
apex wings in Boston and Tatum and Brown that allow
him to do a little bit less right.

Speaker 2 (13:41):
So, like if they had improved over.

Speaker 4 (13:43):
Instead of being instead of being star chasing after Damian Lillard,
what they needed to do was find a wing player
upgrade over Middleton.

Speaker 1 (13:51):
I still think that all the offensive problems that they
had still exist. Yeah, how can they exist with Lillard's
that much better? And Drew offensively.

Speaker 4 (14:02):
I mean offensively sure, but I think defensively there's a
humans drop off which makes a big difference. And you know,
in terms of like and then you look at a
guy like Brook Lopez, I mean, Brook Lopez is my age.

Speaker 1 (14:14):
I'm not saying they're gonna beat Boston, but I'm saying
they will be tough. Boston's road will be much tougher
next year than it is this year. We'll we'll continue
this though, because we got some more talk about whether
or not they can be a better dining, whether or
not they're more likely to be a dynasty or a

(14:34):
one and done. Keep it locked is Chris and Martin

Speaker 1 (15:34):
All right, it's the Eye Couple. It is a worship Wednesday.
Martin Wei's in for Rob Parker. We're live, of course
from the tire Rag dot com studios, and Martin, we're
talking about whether or not the East Celtics, who are
about to extend Jason Tatum with a well deserved five year,
three hundred and fifteen million dollar contract, which will make

(15:56):
him the highest paid player in the history of the league.

Speaker 2 (15:58):
And that's just the way things were. We all know.

Speaker 1 (16:01):
Last year it was Jalen Brown, right, biggest contract in
NBA history. Now it's Jason Tatum, and next year it'll
be somebody else.

Speaker 2 (16:10):
That's just how it works. But look, they delivered the championship.
It's an easy decision. But here's the thing.

Speaker 1 (16:17):
And look, they may repeat, because we're not so much
asking can they repeat, they can.

Speaker 2 (16:25):
I'm not saying they will.

Speaker 1 (16:27):
I think my gut right now, at least right now,
is that they won't.

Speaker 2 (16:32):
And they're a great team and they.

Speaker 1 (16:34):
Obviously had a fantastic season, one of the most dominating,
dominant seasons ever. I don't think they're one of the
best teams ever, but just it was definitely one of
the most dominant seasons.

Speaker 2 (16:46):
All the way around. But Martin, when you look.

Speaker 1 (16:49):
At the teams that have repeated as champions, one thing
that they all have in common, it's like a top
fifteen ish player of all time, George Mike And now
that's going way back to the beginning of the league.

Speaker 2 (17:08):
Bill Russell.

Speaker 1 (17:10):
Then you went about twenty years before Magic and Kareem
did it with the Showtime Lakers.

Speaker 2 (17:15):
Then it started happening regularly.

Speaker 1 (17:17):
But Isaiah Thomas, who obviously is a legend and around
that top fifteen range, I think the second best small
player ever to Steph Curry, then Jordan of course, then
Elijahwan and then Jordan again, then shocking Kobe two of them,
then Kobe with Powell, then Lebron with d Wade and Bosh,

(17:40):
and then Steph with Kevin Durant.

Speaker 2 (17:43):
Like as good as Tatum.

Speaker 1 (17:46):
And Brown are and their future Hall of Famers, they
ain't in that class, Martin, and I think you agree
with me right now.

Speaker 4 (17:55):
Sure, but Jason Tatum's only twenty six years old, and
when you look at some of the numbers that like,
if you look at his career compared to other young protege,
young people who kind of took the league go by
storm when they were younger, like a guy like Kobe
or so on, his numbers are right up there. He's
got the most playoff points by player before turning twenty seven,
right played in what I think it was one hundred

(18:16):
at one point this season in the finals, it was
one hundred and eight playoff games played with him and
Jalen Brown together, So I think maybe he's like one
to ten right now along that point.

Speaker 2 (18:24):
So he's got tons of experience. And just think about
some of the people that he's passing up.

Speaker 4 (18:28):
That's Kobe, that's Lebron, and neither one of those guys
did a year in college, right, so they came into
the NBA right out of high school, where Jason Tatum
had to spend that year at Duke. So am I
saying that he's at a Kobe or Lebron level right now?

Speaker 2 (18:40):
No?

Speaker 1 (18:41):
But if you continue, you actually think he can get
to like a top fifteen is all time because he,
to me is and I'm a Tatum fan. I've been
defending him throughout these playoffs and finals because I think
people have been going at him too hard. But he
he is not. Forget Kobe and Lebron and guys like that.

(19:04):
He's a slight tick below the best players today. And
it's only a few of them. I'm talking about, Jo Kic,
Luca and Giannis. Do you think he's in that group.
I think he's right below that group. He's below that group.
But what I'm saying is if he continues to win.

(19:24):
If they continue to keep winning, sure, you see what,
but you keep winning.

Speaker 4 (19:28):
Even if his even if his individual game is not
at the level of some of those guys, he will
be considered in that group because of the winning. That's
the thing that I that's that's the thing that's hard
for me to square because.

Speaker 2 (19:39):
He's had so much people. I don't say hating.

Speaker 4 (19:43):
Hating is too aggressive, but so many people will downplay
his ability at this point because he hadn't won the
title and like he said, I mean, he was copying
off of Steph Curry after the finals, but like what
he said, what are they gonna say now? So now
the only thing now, now that this is a conversation,
what are they gonna say now? Is well, is he
a top X player of all time? Is he a
top player of all time?

Speaker 3 (20:04):
Fife?

Speaker 1 (20:05):
That's far, that's way way below, you know, away from
where we're I think right now. If you want to say,
does he have anything left to prove? Obviously he's got
other goals. He can shoot for MVP, more championships and stuff.
But he's proven he can be the best player on
a championship team.

Speaker 2 (20:22):
As good as Brown is. I think Tatum still is.

Speaker 1 (20:24):
Their best player, but he did he can prove that
he can play his best basketball in the finals. That's
what some people want to say. Remember people didn't they
had those questions about Steph until he was Finals MVP
in his fourth championship. And I know I'm not hung
up on Finals MVP, but he hasn't been as good

(20:46):
as he can be in the finals.

Speaker 4 (20:49):
I think if Jason Tatum comes out and he plays
like he did in Game five for an entire playoffs,
he will skyrocket the ranks like he will.

Speaker 2 (20:59):
He will climb the ranks like he's going on an elevator. tATu.

Speaker 4 (21:03):
I do like if he if he comes out, and
because here's the thing I mean, realistically speaking, when you
look at the finals in particular, it wasn't that he
was playing poorly across the board.

Speaker 2 (21:13):
He just couldn't hit a shot to side.

Speaker 1 (21:15):
Now he played, He played good, strong floor games. He
just couldn't make baskets. And that's what I was saying
in his defense. Let me shout out Michael Holly, who
is one of the greatest reporters Boston's ever seen. He
hit me up with Isaiah is not top fifteen. I

(21:36):
expect that from a Boston you know, not from Boston,
but a Boston guy. When talking about the Pistons, I'm
about around him, Thomas.

Speaker 2 (21:47):
Just because he didn't meet the criteria for the you know.

Speaker 1 (21:50):
The analytics don't like Isaiah. The analytics don't like Kobe either,
to be quite honest. And so because you where we
see some of these guys right were writing, Isaah will
tell you this, and he's right, the only player ever
to go through who beat bird Magic and Jordan more

(22:13):
than they beat him.

Speaker 2 (22:15):
That's pretty good. I mean, it's all look good.

Speaker 4 (22:18):
You want to say, he's not fifteen, look at the
wins and losses matter, right.

Speaker 1 (22:22):
Check his stats, as Lebron would say on his teeth.
But here's the other thing. And we talked about the
competition coming into East Martin, what about the West though?
See what I love about this? And we're about to
get on Mark get mark Stein on man, we can go.
We we got layers to this and we're gonna keep
unpacking these layers Martin Weiss, because you bringing you bringing

(22:44):
some stuff to the table. But mark Stein will join
us in a moment. But first, Moncey with the update.

Speaker 7 (22:51):
Monsey Fellas happy to be hanging out with you today.

Speaker 2 (22:57):
A lot going on.

Speaker 7 (22:58):
We're actually gonna start at the men College World Series.
Tennessee defeated FSU seven to two. The Volunteers are headed
to the championship series for the first time since nineteen
fifty one. Who are they going to face the winner
of Texas A and M and Florida? Who are going
to start a three game series on Saturday. I don't
know why it's not starting until Saturday.

Speaker 3 (23:20):
But that's that.

Speaker 7 (23:22):
In Major League Baseball, Garrett Cole back on the mound
for the Yankees. They just scored to tie the game
as they're hosting the Orioles in New York, one to
one bottom of the first inning, the Guardians beating the
Mariners three zero bottom of the third inning. Earlier today
in baseball, the Brave shut out the Tigers seven zero,
while the Pirates edged the Reds seven to one. In
the NBA, the Pistons, the fired head coach Monty Williams

(23:43):
after one season. Don't feel too bad. They still owe
him sixty five million. They did end with the league
worse fourteen and sixty eight. Pascal Siakam plans to return
back to the Pacers. The ESPN reports it's going to
be a four year, one hundred and eighty nine point
five million dollar max contract, and Warriors Gary Payne also
opted into his nine point one million dollar player option

(24:03):
for next season. In the WNBA, Sparks Rickey Cameron brink
out for the rest of the season due to a
torn acl She was also set to compete on the
US women's three on three at the Paris Olympics. Right now,
in the WNBA, the Fever are beating the Mystics twenty
eight to twenty six, six minutes to go in the
first half. Caitlin Clark has four points two or three
from the field to go along with six rebounds and

(24:25):
three assists. And according to Yahoo Sports, the NCAA leadership
presented Division One commissioners with models that would expand the
tournament by four teams or eight teams as soon as
twenty twenty five twenty twenty six, So already a bigger
March Madness.

Speaker 2 (24:43):
Back to you guys, all right, thank you, Mike.

Speaker 1 (24:46):
Yeah, we are live from thetirag dot Com studios. Our
next guest, Fox Sports Radio, NBA Insider co hosts of
this league Uncut check out the podcast he does with
Chris Haynes, one of the best in the business, the
Hall of Famer Mark Stein.

Speaker 3 (25:03):
Mark, what up?

Speaker 5 (25:03):
Brother, old couple? How is Rob doing man Detroit today?
He must be a mess?

Speaker 1 (25:11):
He is actually not on tonight Martin Weiss soo. Another
Detroit guy is in for him. So we're not as
old tonight, Martin is what are you? Martin thirty thirty one?

Speaker 3 (25:24):
No?

Speaker 2 (25:25):
Thanks, Christy.

Speaker 1 (25:27):
Okay see, I'm saying I'm giving you a compliment, but yeah,
we're We're not quite as old now, only only one
of us is.

Speaker 5 (25:34):
But much needed infusion right right about that?

Speaker 2 (25:40):
All right? You mentioned it.

Speaker 1 (25:41):
Monie Williams fired Mark? Am I crazy? And I don't
It's probably not going to happen. Am I crazy to
think the Lakers might at least want to give Monny
a look or.

Speaker 5 (25:53):
Or what I would say? Two weeks ago there was
actually chatter about that, and I started hearing that as
conspiracy theory around the league. That, man, could you imagine
if if Monny Williams became available with the Lakers jump
in there? But look, this coaching carousel has been so
filled with twists and turns and curveballs that like everybody

(26:16):
I talked to is somewhat hesitant to make any kind
of firm declaration. The general vibe I got today when
I checked around was that it's probably too late, and
most insiders that I consult with are still projecting JJ
Reddick to get this job. But look, you brought it

(26:37):
up rightfully. So the Lakers actually offered the job the
Mani Williams a few years ago. They went after Tyleru.
Those talks broke down because Eilu felt like the salary
offer was not what it should have been and the
control of staff that he wanted was not where it

(26:58):
needed to be, and so talks with Tylou collapsed, and
Mani Williams could have had the Laker job, he chose
the Phoenix job. He liked the working conditions and the
setup better in Phoenix than he did with the Lakers.
The Lakers turned to Frank Vogel won a championship, but
now they have since parted company with Frank Vogel and Dargingham,

(27:21):
So there is history there. You're not wrong, but is
it too late in the game? And also, let's be honest,
Mani Williams has been through a lot here. Yeah, with
his dismissal in Phoenix, his dismissal in Detroit after just
the season, obviously, his wife dealing with a very very
serious home situation. If I'm MONI Williams, do I really

(27:45):
want to jump in and take a Laker job, even
if they came after him, and go into the hottest,
most scrutinized seat in the NBA. I don't know how
appealing that would be to Bannie Williams at this point.
I don't want to. I have no spoken to him
since all this happened, so I shouldn't be speaking for him.
That's just kind of my read as a third party observer.

(28:08):
I don't know that he would necessarily be in a
huge rush to jump into such a complicated situation, because
even if that is JJ Reddick, it's going to be
a really hard job, and I think it's almost gonna
be a tougher job after they offered it to Dan
Hurley and Hurley didn't take.

Speaker 1 (28:26):
Do you have any feel on what Detroit might do,
what some of the names they're looking at, And I
actually think for and I don't think he, like you said,
I think it seems like he's gonna end up with
the Lakers. But I mean for a guy like Reddick
who hasn't coached, I mean a job like Detroit where
at least you've got a K.

Speaker 2 (28:45):
Cunningham. I mean that could be.

Speaker 1 (28:47):
It's certainly a little less stressful than the Lakers job.

Speaker 2 (28:51):
But where do you think Detroit might might go?

Speaker 5 (28:55):
Well, that's what makes some of this so bizarre, the timing.
It's just Detroit is jumping into this so late. There
are now technically three head coaching vacancies in the NBA,
with the Lakers, the Cavaliers, and the Pistons. But by
all accounts, both the Lakers and the Cavaliers are nearing
the end of their searches. And again this is you know,

(29:19):
I would not write this in permanent ink, but most
people that I speak to in coaching circles, the projections
at this point is that JJ Reddick would get the
Laker job, and James Arrego is the most likely to
get the Cleveland job. And so now the Pistons really
aren't even looking at experienced coaches. And look, JJ Reddick

(29:42):
is not experience, but is certainly a hot name on
the market. But James Barrego has been a head coach
twice you know, where will the Pistons turn. They'll almost
certainly have to look at the assistant ranks. And again,
you know, the draft is in a week, so this
coaching search is going to take some time to start
from scratch now with the draft a week out, so

(30:05):
surely it's gonna still into July. It's just the timing
of this is all very curious and weird because look,
the Pistons have not played a game for more than
sixty five days. They just hired a new president of
the basketball operations to do this. Now, it's the timing

(30:26):
is a lot of people are scratching their head about that.

Speaker 4 (30:30):
Yeah, so Mark, I want to ask you Mark Stino
and Martin Weisse here appreciate A big fan of your substact.
By the way, also, I'm a subscriber, but want to
know what is the hold up at this point? Why
isn't JJ Reddick the coach of the Lakers. This has
been reported on at nauseam and they had a brief,
brief flirtation with Danny Hurley and then we heard that

(30:52):
that wasn't real, and then you know, I found out
that the money wasn't even you know, the money was
only seventy million dollars or six years, and you know
money wasn't it was like a godfather offer to Danny Hurley,
So you had to leave yu khon What is I
kind of thought that we were waiting for the end
of the NBA Finals for the.

Speaker 2 (31:09):
Lakers to hire JJ. Is there cold feet?

Speaker 5 (31:12):
There is?

Speaker 2 (31:12):
What is the hold up at this point?

Speaker 5 (31:15):
Well, I think that's probably why not just me, why
others are pulling their punch to some degree because it
isn't done. But let's also say the finals literally just
ended Monday. It's only Wednesday. It's not like it's been
weeks and weeks since the NBA Finals. And I reported
about this very early in the process that JJ Reddick
was going to have to finish the finals after after

(31:40):
ESPN made the decision, a very unpopular decision to move
away from Jeff Van Gundy and Mark Jackson, they bring
in Doc Rivers and Doris Burke, and look, I think
ESPN was under no illusion. I think they expected. I
think they fully expected Doc Rivers to return to coaching
at some point, but I also think they thought we're

(32:01):
going to get at least the season. He's going to
do this a year and Doc didn't make it to
February before the Bucks job came up. And you know,
I don't think Doc was actually looking to rush back
into coaching, but that was one of those opportunities again
where it's a good job with a star player like
Joanna Damian Lillard there and a lot of money, and

(32:23):
Doc felt like he couldn't pass that up. But once
they made the switch and announced that JJ Reddick was
going to be on their finals broadcast, they needed him
to at least finish the season. And now you could
also go back and you know, Chris and I were
both at ESPN when this happened. In the twenty eleven finals.

(32:43):
The Warriors hired Mark Jackson halfway through the Finals, and
then Mark Jackson finished the Finals. He covered the last
three games, but it was in the middle of the
series that the Warriors hired him as their coach. But look,
the Lakers, no, I know, there's been a lot of discussion.
Was this the smoke screen, was this performance art? Was

(33:04):
this the leverage play? I mean, the Lakers did actually
offer the job to Danny Hurley, and maybe the number
wasn't as high as people were expecting, but they did
offer him the job, and Hurley had the chance to
take it and decided not to. Had Hurley said yes,
he'd have been the Lakers coach. So I think they
did need some bit of a reset after that. But look,

(33:27):
I know again I'm because there have been so many
twists in turns. I don't want to sit here saying
this is exactly what's going to happen next. But again,
when I talk to people, the expectation that underline expectation
is that the Lakers are nearing the finish line in
this thing.

Speaker 1 (33:46):
Mark, I want to take it quickly to free agency.
And we got about a minute for your answer.

Speaker 2 (33:52):
The Spurs.

Speaker 1 (33:52):
Now we know Wimby. I mean, what a season for
a rookie and my guess I think he could be
a top ten player. Now, what is the Spurs plan? Like,
how do they want to build around him? We know
they have a lot of money. You think they'll spend
a lot of that this summer or are they kind
of in a Waight in Ce mode and be impatient.

Speaker 5 (34:14):
My suspicion is that he probably wants to move faster
than they do, and it'll be interesting to watch what
kind of cues they take from how much how fast
he really wants to push and will he pushed them?
You know, we're just still learning about him as well.
So is it his way? Is that his manner to
really push things? Because the chatter you heard is that

(34:35):
the Spurs might just want a veteran guard is kind
of the next step, like even even a Chris Paul.
I've been hearing that for over a month now. Maybe
you just bring in Chris Paul for a year or
two to help him take the next step. But the
Spurs with two top techn picks, A lot of people
are watching them to see what they do this summer
for sure.

Speaker 1 (34:54):
All Right, that's our man, Mark Stein, Great stuff as always,
brother than check him out again on the list This
League Uncut Podcast.

Speaker 1 (35:35):
All right, it's the Odd Couple live from theti iraq
dot com studios. All right, Martin, we've been talking about
the Celtics.

Speaker 2 (35:45):
Will they be one and done? Will they repeat as champions?

Speaker 1 (35:50):
Maybe a mini dynasty or will they become a full
fledged dynasty. And we talked about the competition they face
in the East. Next year, we should be better if
teams are healthy. The West. I expect Dallas to get better.
I expect Minnesota to get better. I expect Oklahoma City

(36:15):
to get better. I expect New Orleans to get back
because of this experience. Now I don't know. I'm not
saying they'll get back to the finals. Obviously Denver will
be right there. I'm not saying they get back to
the finals because my expectation is that they don't. Like
I would probably go with Denver or Minnesota to get

(36:37):
to the finals. But a lot of it in the West,
especially it's matchups Like I think Denver would have beaten Dallas,
but obviously they couldn't beat Minnesota, and then Minnesota couldn't
beat Dallas, and Boston was a tough matchup for Dallas.
So a lot of its matchups but I just think
the experience for the Mavericks. I will see what they add.

(36:59):
They probably could use another guy that can create a
little bit because outside of Kyrie and.

Speaker 2 (37:06):
Luca. Now that guy would have to be.

Speaker 1 (37:07):
Content at times just kind of in the corners at
the three point line or spotting up, but he'd also
have to be able to create his own stuff when needed.

Speaker 2 (37:18):
Because that was the thing.

Speaker 4 (37:19):
When I was watching the Finals, especially the last the
last two games. At Boston Won's game three, in Game five,
I'm thinking, I'm like, I'm watching, like, man, it's a
lot of PJ. Washington involved. On the offensive side of
the ball. There's a lot of PJ Washington.

Speaker 1 (37:35):
Well, look, their offense isn't complex. I mean, it's Luca
or Kyrie either creating one on one or getting a
pick and roll or picking pop and either taking it
themselves or drawing the double team and kicking it out
to the shooters or throwing it up at the rim
for an alley oop. And that's why Boston was so

(37:58):
tough for them, because they had the defenders on the
perimeter who could just stick with a one on one
and they didn't have to double as much. And that
was a big, big problem for Dallas. But I think
one thing that is really intriguing Martin and I'm kind of.

Speaker 2 (38:14):
Liking this era of parody.

Speaker 1 (38:16):
We haven't seen this since the seventies when no team repeated.
We had eight champions in the seventies, no repeat champions
or back to back I should say, because the Knicks
won two and I think the Celtics won two, but
no back to back champions. Who's gonna grab hold of
this era? And it might be nobody. We might get

(38:39):
another like is it Minnesota next year? And then after that,
is it Memphis or somebody else? Because I do expect
Ja to come back with a vengeance. But I'm wondering
will it be a Yiannis, Will it be a Luca?

Speaker 2 (38:55):
Will it be a Jokic? Will it be Tatum and Brown?

Speaker 3 (39:00):
Know what I mean?

Speaker 2 (39:00):
Will it be Anthony Everards?

Speaker 1 (39:02):
And then eventually in short order when Ben Yama's coming,
So I wonder who's going.

Speaker 2 (39:09):
To be that guy? And rot or Martin?

Speaker 1 (39:12):
If we're talking about a yo kicch a Yannis? Can
they crack the top fifteen, top twenty all time? They
gonna one of them is gonna have to do a
little something something in this era as far as like
winning another championship, It's ain't for.

Speaker 2 (39:26):
Luca, I think.

Speaker 4 (39:28):
I think right now, I think right now the Celtics
are obviously in pole position, right depending on again the
second you know, the second Apron.

Speaker 1 (39:37):
And how how uh well they at least got next year,
So they need.

Speaker 4 (39:42):
Will if you have if gross Beck and them are
willing to pay the taxes, I think that's gonna be
the answer. Right there is Boston, But I ultimately think
they won't be right. I ultimately think that second apron
if they go into that set.

Speaker 1 (39:56):
If they get next year's title. I mean, and Stevens
is smart too. You got to give him credit for
putting the right pieces because nobody, I mean, Derek White
was good in San Antonio, but nobody.

Speaker 2 (40:06):
Necessarily thought he was this.

Speaker 1 (40:08):
Chris STAPs has been a journeyman because of his injuries.
And you know, Drew, like I said, didn't play great
last year for Milwaukee, at least in the playoffs.

Speaker 2 (40:18):
So they've done a good job of saying, you know what.

Speaker 1 (40:20):
This guy fits with us, so they I think they
can find pieces even if they lose some of these guys,
you know, outside of Tatum and Brown.

Speaker 4 (40:28):
But I think so that's why I think that Boston
is in is in the pole position. But I think
the answer is it's a right now, I had to
split it between Anthony Edwards and Victor weinb Binyama. Honestly, like,
I think if Anthony Edwards, like kind of the same
reason you said about Dallas, where you think they'll get
better from that experience. I think if he can elevate

(40:49):
his game offensively to an next level where he's not
got his hands on his knees in the fourth quarter,
he's not you know, you know, he's working, He's got
a little bit more stamp. I'm going a little bit
more temerity. I think he can be that. Oh it's
gonna have to be a guy like that who's young,
who also is not super expensive yet like un bin Yama,

(41:10):
like somebody like that in that in that vein. I
don't think it's gonna be a Jokis Giannis w uh Luca,
the guys.

Speaker 2 (41:18):
That the usual suspects. I don't think it's gonna be
one of them.

Speaker 1 (41:21):
Now, it's interesting because I mean the question and you know,
I love Win Binyama, and I'm with you, like I
don't know what this dude might end up doing, Like
as far as winning, He's got the dog in him,
it seems. And the question is how soon is he
gonna start winning? Keep it locked, Ah couple
