Speaker 2 (00:23):
You're listening to the Best of The Odd Couple with
Chris Brushaw and Ron Harker.

Speaker 1 (00:31):
We've got some breaking news and it's a bombshell.

Speaker 3 (00:36):
Yeah. The New York Post.

Speaker 1 (00:37):
Reporting that our colleague Skip Bayless is leaving FS one. Obviously,
Skip the star of the show, undisputed, but this is
even more than I don't know what he's gonna do
in the future. Is he retiring. I haven't talked to Skip,

(01:00):
I got it.

Speaker 4 (01:00):
One of my says that he's looking forward for what's
to come, So I don't think he'll be hanging them out.

Speaker 3 (01:07):
Yeah, so he Skip.

Speaker 1 (01:10):
A lot of people only know him from, you know,
seeing him on television most people, of course.

Speaker 3 (01:17):
But Skip is a friend of mine.

Speaker 1 (01:21):
I really liked him a lot, great guy, and he's
been great to me in my career.

Speaker 3 (01:30):
You know, he I used to be on First Take
with it.

Speaker 1 (01:35):
When I first met Skip Is we were doing Cold
Pizza and I would go on as the NBA reporter.

Speaker 3 (01:41):
This is around, you know, in the early two.

Speaker 1 (01:43):
Thousands, and I would go on as an NBA reporter
and Skip with debate with Woody Page for a portion
of the show called First and Tend and they would
come on every twenty minutes or so and debate a
few topics. And you know, they had me on there
once to debate with Skip for a whole week, and

(02:05):
that was really the first time that I did the
whole debate format, and that was kind of my first
step into movie out of just being a reporter. And
Skip of course had to give the had to co
sign that for them to allow me to do a
week on there. And then when it became First Take

(02:27):
and they made First Take entirely debate at ESPN was
on ESPN two at that point, I would be in
the rotation with Skip and I would do a week
every month or so. Rob Parker, obviously my partner here,
was in the rotation. The two Live Studes, remember them,
They were in the rotation. Jamel Hill was and Skip

(02:53):
was a great guy. Off the set. We had dinner together,
we prayed together. You know, he was he was a
good guy. You know, obviously he could be. He's known
as being an abrasive, strongly opinionated guy on the air,
and that's what he should have been. But off the air,

(03:14):
really good guy, nice guy. I know you know him
well to March.

Speaker 4 (03:17):
I've been working with him basically hand in hand for
the last eight years now.

Speaker 3 (03:22):
Yeah. Yeah, the end of an era. Uh, it really
is and not just FS one.

Speaker 1 (03:27):
Well again, like you said, maybe he'll be doing something else,
but he he and steven A.

Speaker 3 (03:33):
Smith.

Speaker 1 (03:34):
You know, maybe you'd say Michael Wilbind and Kornheiser kind
of started this format Tony.

Speaker 3 (03:39):
Kornheiser and then he and steven A. Smith took it
to the next level.

Speaker 1 (03:44):
Yeah, they made it real, like just no no hols bards,
no holds bard.

Speaker 3 (03:50):
Debate and uh.

Speaker 1 (03:52):
And remember, of course stephen A was out of it
for a little while at ESPN, and Skip carried that
torch and uh. And then if you know, he gave
stephen A, you know, opportunities at ESPN that obviously steven
A has turned into gold.

Speaker 3 (04:09):
Take it to the level. Literally, Yeah, you're right, Shannon Sharp.

Speaker 1 (04:14):
He gave him a shot at FS one, and Shannon,
you know, turned it into gold again. And you know,
when I first left ESPN and went to FS one,
or when I was considering it.

Speaker 3 (04:27):
Skip was.

Speaker 1 (04:28):
It was Skipp and Colin Cowherd who were like the
two stars at FS one, right, they were the big
names coming from ESPN to build this new network. And
so one of my primary roles was gonna be was
on Undisputed with Skipp and Shannon.

Speaker 3 (04:46):
And so I had to meet with Skip again out in.

Speaker 1 (04:49):
LA and we talked about everything, and because of his
stature at the network, he had to give it the
go ahead and he did, and so Skip, you know,
I got nothing love for Skip, and so I wish
him well with.

Speaker 4 (05:04):
You know, as do I because I'll be honest. The
job that I got Undisputed was the first quote unquote
real job. I call it my first real job in
sports where I got health insurance and all that type
of stuff. And I walked in there and as of now,
me and Skipp are the two oldest tenured members of
the show, uh of Undisputed. So it's been it's been

(05:27):
a long ride. But I walked in there Thanksgiving and
I wasn't going home for Christmas or anything like that,
and Skip caught winto that and invited me to his
house for Christmas. And we did Christmases together, me his wife,
and his her sister, and and Rob my sister when
she would come to visit. We did Christmas together up
until COVID as to where I bought Skip and I

(05:51):
exchanged Christmas gift several times.

Speaker 1 (05:53):
Uh.

Speaker 4 (05:53):
You know, people have a lot of opinion about Skip,
and a lot that they say that this would be
formulated or whatever.

Speaker 3 (05:59):
I would was sitting there. I'll never forget this for
the rest of my life.

Speaker 4 (06:03):
It was the Warriors and the Cavaliers Christmas Day, and
it was the Kyrie Irving had to depending the game
winning shot on the right block. He turned around and
hit a game winning shot over Klay Thompson. He Skip
pulled the room and said, who do you think is
taking the last shot? I said Lebron. Rob said probably Lebron.
Rob said Kyrie. But everybody else said Lebron. Ernestin tae Lebron.

(06:23):
Everyone else said Lebron.

Speaker 3 (06:24):
Skip said Lebron. No, Skip said, Skip said, is going
to be Kyrie? Watch this?

Speaker 4 (06:29):
And sure enough, Kyrie Irving came out, got the pass
from Lebron, hit the game winning shot, and he just
looked back and he smiled and he said, told you so.
And then he goes on TV the next day and
he goes, I knew Lebron James wasn't taking that shot.
I said it was gonna be Kyrie Irving. And so
the point, as I'm making is there's no way he

(06:50):
could have known that before the moment, and it really
informed the way I look at him. He's been nothing
but nice to me, and I wish him the best
of luck and whatever he does going forward, got nothing
beloved for Skip Bayless.

Speaker 3 (07:00):
He'll be missed.

Speaker 1 (07:01):
He'll be missed obviously by us as friends, but also
on the air.

Speaker 3 (07:06):
It's a loss.

Speaker 1 (07:06):
And I think even those that didn't like Skip, you
know that we're his antagonist.

Speaker 3 (07:10):
Absolutely, they will admit he will be missed.

Speaker 2 (07:13):

Speaker 5 (07:45):
We've all been through some sort of adversity to get

We've all used different tools.

Speaker 1 (08:01):
There's a lot of talk about Tua because he is
that kind of quarterback out there. Obviously Dak Prescott, but
that has had his big contract and he'll get another
win at some point. But Tua is a guy that's
been incredible. You know, this year was very productive had

(08:21):
you know, was one of the had some of the
best statistics in.

Speaker 3 (08:25):
The NFL.

Speaker 1 (08:27):
And put up the historic seventy point game.

Speaker 3 (08:31):
Of course against the Denver Broncos. And yet he is
not paid.

Speaker 1 (08:38):
And his teammate, Tyreek Hill, I mean, mag.

Speaker 3 (08:43):
Tyreek Hill is a heck of a teammate.

Speaker 1 (08:45):
Man like that, you know what I'm saying, Like that's
the brother you want. Commenting on you when something's going on.
I mean, he here's one thing he said. For people
to sit here and try to discredit Tua and say
it's not deserving of a contract is wild to me.
A lot of guys on the team understand his value

(09:07):
and understand that we need him, we need his leadership,
we need a mindset that he brings into each and
every week.

Speaker 3 (09:14):
It's there. It's like terminator almost.

Speaker 1 (09:17):
Man, I feel like you should be one of the
highest paid quarterbacks in the league.

Speaker 3 (09:21):
That's a teammate for you, all right?

Speaker 1 (09:26):
Very different than who was it for the Cowboys?

Speaker 3 (09:30):
Yeah. Money. Juxtaposed that with Malik Hooker podcasting Michael Right.

Speaker 1 (09:41):
Let Michael wait his turn, but anyway, Tyreek wants him
to get paid. And on the other end of the spectrum, Uh,
the Athletic polled, No, it wasn't.

Speaker 3 (09:53):
The Athletic was.

Speaker 1 (09:54):
ESPN Jeremy Fowler right polled several NFL executives and coaches
about eighty of them, and they ranked their top ten
quarterbacks and Tua was not there.

Speaker 3 (10:07):
He was nowhere to be found. And so where are
you at?

Speaker 1 (10:12):
I'm gonna tell you where I'm at, and then I
want to hear your opinion and longtime listeners of the
show know where I'm at on tour. I like toa
I think he's a solid quarterback. If I were the
Miami Dolphins, I would not be ready to pay him yet.

Speaker 3 (10:28):
I would not be ready.

Speaker 1 (10:29):
To give him a two hundred million dollar contract or
what you know, whatever it would end up being. Because
Number one, because I am not fully convinced.

Speaker 3 (10:42):
I'm sorry for those that are offended by this.

Speaker 1 (10:45):
But I'm not fully convinced that my man can stay healthy.

Speaker 3 (10:51):
I mean, he's had one fully healthy season in.

Speaker 1 (10:56):
Four years in the NFL. It's not enough not for
me to give you all this guaranteed money. So that's
number one. I want to see you stay healthy this
year too. And then number two, Tua has struggled against

(11:20):
great competition.

Speaker 3 (11:22):
He was one in six last year against playoff teams.

Speaker 1 (11:25):
And it's not just that they lost because some people
would look at their defense as they were they gave
up more points, blah blah.

Speaker 3 (11:31):
Blah blah blah blah.

Speaker 1 (11:34):
Tua's numbers plummet against good competition, plummet. So I want
to see you produce against some of the big boys,
all right, before I pony up all this money and then.

Speaker 3 (11:51):
He is Martin.

Speaker 1 (11:53):
I know, we know he's from Hawaii, but my man
is zero and six.

Speaker 3 (12:00):
When there's a breeze out forty five, I mean forty five.

Speaker 1 (12:05):
Degrees isn't exactly freezing forty five degrees and under Tua
is zero and six.

Speaker 3 (12:16):
That's not what I need because in the.

Speaker 1 (12:19):
Playoffs, good chance you're gonna play in some cold weather.
And so those are things I need for Tua to
improve on and show me before I give him the
huge money, especially especially when I can franchise him. So
I'm sorry I get to his thoughts of yo, it's

(12:42):
time to pay a brother, and I'd be happy for
him personally if he got paid, but from a business standpoint,
if I'm the Dolphins.

Speaker 3 (12:51):
Not yet.

Speaker 4 (12:53):
For me, this contract gets done after one conversation, Steven
Ross needs to sit down with Mike McDaniel and Chris
Greer and asked Mike while he's sitting there in his
off white brand new Air Force ones and his pants
to show off his ankles, right, ask him, is it

(13:16):
you or is it Tua?

Speaker 3 (13:19):
Right?

Speaker 4 (13:20):
Is it you or is it Tua? Can you do
this with another guy? And if Mike McDaniel says, anything,
but it's tua.

Speaker 1 (13:31):
This time.

Speaker 4 (13:31):
Not rip that paper up. We're not offering him this contract.
Done that, don't you think. I think that's probably the conversation, man,
I've already happened, which is why we're in the situation
we are in now with the Miami quarterback.

Speaker 1 (13:42):
Right.

Speaker 4 (13:42):
That's what I think is that is to me, is
that that's the conversation he needs to be had. And
I think that you probably had a similar one with
less need and uh the la co Sean McVay. Right,
Sean McVay said, is it you or is it golf?
And he said, no, no, no.

Speaker 3 (13:59):
It's me.

Speaker 4 (14:00):
You go get me this guy, Matthew Stafford. I'll bring
you back a ring, Mike. So then whatever, Mike be
Daniel says, that's the answer. And I think that Michael
Daniel is probably saying, it's me.

Speaker 3 (14:13):
It's me.

Speaker 4 (14:14):
I'm drawing this up. I'm making him look great now. Yeah,
and I think he's go ahead. I'm just trying if
I'm too, Don't get me wrong, I'm doing all of this.
I'm saying I want the market value, I want the
sixty million I'm.

Speaker 3 (14:27):
Looking at like, give me you know I'm up there.

Speaker 4 (14:30):
I'm sitting there the same way that Dak Prescott is
and Brock Party should in a couple of years from now.

Speaker 3 (14:36):
But what I'm telling let me let let's stay there.

Speaker 1 (14:40):
Because and I talked about this, because the reporting seems
to be that the Dolphins are willing to pay him something. Right,
it's not market value, it's not fifty million plus are
they willing to get it?

Speaker 3 (14:54):
Seems they may be willing.

Speaker 1 (14:55):
To give him somewhere between forty five and fifty. Now
I get to a like, yo, pay a brother, the
market rate is fifty five million, That's what I want.
Look at my numbers, check my stats against Jared Golf
and so on and so forth.

Speaker 3 (15:14):
Right, But.

Speaker 1 (15:18):
And I'm just thinking out loud because I get to
a wanting as much money as he could get. But Martin,
here's the thing. If you're tour do you sit back,
does a party you say you know what.

Speaker 3 (15:35):
They're offering me?

Speaker 1 (15:36):
Let's just throw out forty seven million a year. Let's
just say that's what it is. I'm in a great situation.
I'm in a warm weather city. That's a great city.
I got a phenomenal offensive coach, I've got phenomenal receivers.

Speaker 3 (15:55):
I got very good running backs.

Speaker 1 (15:59):
I mean, I can stay here and put up numbers.
And I mean, I'm not gonna admit this to the Dolphins,
but I'm injury prone. I have only had one healthy season.
I'm like talking and you look in the mirror to a.

Speaker 3 (16:17):
This is what you're saying to yourself. Sure, so why
don't I lock up.

Speaker 1 (16:25):
For what a four or five year you know, two
hundred and twenty million dollar deal? You know whatever it
would end up being. Why don't I lock up all
this money just in case I get hurt? And we're
gonna talk about this, but it's kind of to me
what Jalen Brunson did. Jalen said, you know what, let

(16:46):
me a bird in the hand is better than two
in the bush. And so what do you think about that?
I mean, to me, that is legitimate. If you're tua
to say, maybe, all right, maybe I'll take the forty
seven million peror, you know, say, assuming they're offering somewhere
around there, ask security, because if I get hurt, if

(17:08):
I get another concussion, my career and certainly big time
paydays are in jeopardy.

Speaker 3 (17:16):
Now, i'd I agree with.

Speaker 4 (17:17):
That in terms of if he gets another concussion, his
career is in jeopardy and he probably should retire to
be honest, if he does get another one. Here's the problem, though, Chris,
in a world we're thirty six year old. Kirk Cousins
just got one hundred and eighty million dollars one hundred
million guaranteed at thirty six with the torn achilles, and

(17:42):
what one playoff win.

Speaker 3 (17:45):
If I'm too I gotta get to market. I gotta
get to market because somebody's.

Speaker 1 (17:49):
Going But Kirk, I mean for a thirty six year
old off an injury, of course, but still it was
only forty five million.

Speaker 3 (17:58):
But that's what I'm sess this can are.

Speaker 1 (18:00):
He's better than some of these guys that got paid more.

Speaker 4 (18:04):
But christ for if kirk Cousins is making forty five million,
you're about to pay me forty seven If I'm to it.

Speaker 3 (18:11):
No, I'm going to market. I'm going to market now.

Speaker 1 (18:14):
But it ultimately leads where I have questions about what
you say. Is that, like you said, somebody you know,
I'm going out like that that's.

Speaker 3 (18:24):
Gonna get paid. Sure to it will.

Speaker 4 (18:28):
I think it will get paid as well, but not
like that much, you know what I mean? I don't
think two is resetting the market no matter where he goes.
So it depends on that. It depends on if he
really likes his situation or not, whether or not he's
willing to take you.

Speaker 1 (18:41):
I mean you might. You might be upset that they
seem to be doubting you, right.

Speaker 3 (18:45):
I think that's the number one reason. But where are
you going?

Speaker 1 (18:49):
Where you're gonna get better a better set of wide receivers.

Speaker 3 (18:53):
You're not a better run game, a better play caller.

Speaker 4 (18:56):
Like really, you're not getting a better set of wide
receivers between Waddle and Tyreek Hill more than like if not,
if they're not the best, their top three exist one, yeah,
it doesn't exist. So but it all depends on again
kind of just like Jalen Brunson, It depends on how
much do you like it here? And how much did
this negotiation period you know bother you right? How much

(19:18):
did did did you? Because the reporter is tool wants
to reset the market, right, and sometimes you.

Speaker 1 (19:23):
Just sometimes man, you have to put your ego aside.
I mean, Patrick Mahomes, come on, who should be paid
more than him? He not concerned about I gotta be
the highest paid guy in the league.

Speaker 4 (19:37):
But he also has a contract that will have him
locked up through like twenty thirty one at this point.

Speaker 3 (19:43):
As he should. I'm not saying, but you know, we're
talking about forty five million a year.

Speaker 4 (19:47):
Yeah, but he's like, I can take a cut on
the average annual value because the total value is dwarfing
a lot of these guys with the average anuals.

Speaker 1 (19:55):
But any of these dudes that keep playing long now
you don't have the twelve years. But you know what,
I'm like, they're gonna make that money if they keep playing.
I just you know, obviously Tom Brady didn't always take
as much as he could have gotten.

Speaker 3 (20:10):
And I'm not gonna tell too. I'm not gonna count
his pockets.

Speaker 1 (20:13):
If he holds out for the sixty million or whatever,
they're fine. But I think that's something he definitely needs
to look at Martin.

Speaker 3 (20:20):
It's a decision he's gotta make.

Speaker 4 (20:21):
But if in fact, he does want to maximize his earnings,
I'd go to market because somebody will fork over fifty
five million dollars for a quarterback at this point.

Speaker 1 (20:30):
I'm not sure they gonna do that for Tua because
In addition to the injuries, you've got the questions about
how great is he?

Speaker 2 (20:38):
Right? Be sure to catch live editions of The Odd
Couple with Chris Brussard and Rob Parker weekdays at seven
pm Eastern four pm Pacific on Fox Sports Radio and
the iHeartRadio app.

Speaker 3 (20:50):
The Home Run Derby is enjoyable, it really is.

Speaker 1 (20:55):
I want to ask you this question, do you think
what's your what is the best All.

Speaker 3 (21:04):
Star Game event?

Speaker 1 (21:05):
You've got the various events at the Pro Bowl, right,
and those are okay, you know with the quarterbacks, you know,
hitting the targets and so on and so forth. Obviously
you've got the Home Run Derby for baseball, and you've
got the Slam Dunk Contest, the Skills competition, and the

(21:27):
three Point Shootout for basketball the NBA. Which one do
you think is the best? I think it's a two
event race. But let's hear what you say.

Speaker 4 (21:40):
For me right here, right now, in twenty twenty four,
give me the three point Contest. That's where the stars are.
That's where the stars are in the NBA, the three
Point Contest and.

Speaker 3 (21:50):
The WNBA too. Exactly who knows you?

Speaker 4 (21:53):
He's multiple WNBA competitors coming up this next this next
February during All Star weekends. You know, Sabrina and Caitlin,
you see, I don't know, maybe Kayley got to shoot
better than two four eleven from three like you did yesterday,
but that's neither here nor there. But yeah, to me,
it's the three point contest, and to me it's not
really close.

Speaker 3 (22:13):
I think everybody else is playing for second.

Speaker 1 (22:16):
Wow, I got the dunk contest still, And I know
it does go up and down, right, I mean there
are years where it's just bad. When it was in
Cleveland that was the last All Star game I was
at live, it was horrible. I mean it was horrible.
It was the worst ever. But for the most part,

(22:38):
I think they're good.

Speaker 3 (22:41):
Even last year. Mac mcclun. McClung, you know, he is
so good. You remember his name, huh No, But.

Speaker 1 (22:47):
He's you know, he's a nice he put on the
show and he is a great dunker. So and you know,
obviously a lot of people know him from even his
high school days, so he's a name too. But I
agree that the events are better when you have the stars,
and the home run derby still does have a good
number of stars.

Speaker 3 (23:08):
I definitely don't think it's a three point shoot out.

Speaker 1 (23:10):
That's fun, it's nice to watch, but I just don't
think it's as exciting as the dunk contest. And I
think the home run derby as much as I enjoyed,
And I think this year they made some good moves.

Speaker 3 (23:24):
They're making it a little bit faster at the end
of the day.

Speaker 1 (23:30):
Over the years, it's been so long that at the
risk of sounding blasphemous, it's been a tad bit uh,
you know, monotonous.

Speaker 4 (23:47):
And is it just me with the home run Derby?
To me, the only hit a home run one, like
you know what I mean. Like, to me, the key
is the broadcaster. If you're sitting watching it on silent,
you know, lullabies will put me to sleep slower.

Speaker 3 (24:03):
But back in the day when you had Chris.

Speaker 4 (24:05):
Burnman back back gone and doing his different make basically
doing his NFL prime time type calls for these home
run uh, you know, having the nicknames and all that
type of stuff, that to me is where the excitement lies. Like,
obviously the guy's got to hit the home runs out
of the park for things to happen. Many calls, is

(24:26):
he gonna have I'll just remember being younger anything.

Speaker 3 (24:30):
I mean, you how many he's gonna watch? How many
home runs?

Speaker 4 (24:33):
I remember being younger and hearing all of like it
seemed like he had to different, something unique to say
for every single one of these things. Maybe I'm looking
back in the past with rose colored glasses, but uh,
that's what I remember the most is the broadcaster. Maybe
maybe that's actually it was more important to me. It
is why I'm sitting in this chair today. It was
the broadcasting.

Speaker 1 (24:53):
No look, Berman obviously is legendary, and and I like
the home run derby my own. What I'm saying is this,
there are only so many ways you can hit a
home run, right, sure, basically one way you can hit
a home run now unless you're hitting them five to
six hundred.

Speaker 3 (25:16):
Exactly, that's what gets you excited.

Speaker 1 (25:19):
Whereas obviously with the dunk contest, you know, there's just
a number of ways you can dunk of basketball and
Martin I think today now, obviously the dunks that these
guys are often doing are way more advanced than what
even the legendary Michael Jordan and hey, even I mean
Vince was phenomenal, but even more than you know what

(25:41):
Vince Carter did, and you know, it's just the imagination
has run wild. But that's also why they miss more
Like Jordan and Vince and and all those guys back
in the day didn't miss because they were doing dunks
that they could do every time.

Speaker 3 (26:02):
And I'm not saying.

Speaker 1 (26:03):
They were they took the easy way out. I'm just
saying that was the day. Whereas now, because there's this
pressure to kind of do something no one's ever seen,
guys are doing dunks that you're just not gonna make
one hundred percent of the time for the most part, you.

Speaker 3 (26:21):
Know what I mean.

Speaker 1 (26:22):
And that's that's you know, one of the things with
the dunk contest. But you know, they were showing them
last week on NBA TV a lot of them, and
man it was when it's done right. I mean, Blake
Griffin had a great dunk contest performance obviously, vents Zach
Lavine and Aaron Gordon. I think that was the best

(26:43):
dunk contest ever. That was ten years ago. Chris, No,
I know, but I'm just talking about like these historic
dunk contests, the dunk contest ebbs and flows, But ideal
if the thing that would bring it back as.

Speaker 3 (27:00):
If you could get the big names in it.

Speaker 4 (27:01):
Yeah, I'd like to see some more flow less ebb
out of the Dunk Contest, And I'd be right with you.
To me, the Dunk Contest has the greatest potential of
all of the but it's just it has when it
pops is the best.

Speaker 3 (27:14):
It just has yet to realize that potential for quite
some time. For a while.

Speaker 1 (27:18):
Yes, although McClung, I'm not mad at McClung. Were you
mad at mclach I mean, he's not an NBA player.

Speaker 3 (27:22):
But still that's the problem, Chris. He's not an NBA player.
He don't qualify. He doesn't qualify. He doesn't qualify.

Speaker 4 (27:32):
Next up, but Brownie James in a three point shootout,
Oh look, shots fired
