tire rack dot Com the way tire buying should be. Man,
this is a funky Flashback Friday. So much to do
so little time. Coming up in about twenty eight minutes.
Carmen Batally, Fox Sports, NFL reporter and weekend host here

(01:38):
on Fox Sports Radio will join us in the first hour.
Also Mark Funky Coole Medina, we'll join us in the
second hour Fox Sports Radio, NBA Insider, a little shop
Talking Hour number two. So we have a full slate,
a full program on this funky flashback Friday. First, let

(01:59):
let me welco commit my co host for today. His
name is j R Gamble. What's up Jr?

Speaker 3 (02:05):
How he robsolute? Notice I'm inspired today by the hat.
Can you see my hat?

Speaker 1 (02:12):
I don't see you yet. No, So I don't think
your camera's on my.

Speaker 3 (02:15):
My NABJ Hall of Famer hat on since I am
with an NABJ Hall of Famer today. So that's an
O to you, and I hope I'm wearing it well
along with my mlbbro dot com gear.

Yeah, thank you for having me again, absolutely absolutely and
he man's MLB Bro in our fourth year and we're
pretty proud. We have a TV show now on hbcu
Go dot Tv. JR second broadcast is on Monday afternoon
at noon on the streaming service and a proud moment

(02:52):
for all of us at mlbbro dot com.

Speaker 3 (02:55):
Yeah, for sure, it's been four hard years and you
had a plan and when we got together and embarked
on this endeavor to cover black and brown baseball players
and bring a light to the historical significance and also
the six percent of black and brown players that are
playing now the numbers are lower than we would like,

(03:17):
so we want to shed a light on the guys
that are doing well and the journey that they took
to the league. So now that we have this TV
show on HBCU Go, that's also a great thing and
we hope to reach more people and also get more
people involved in baseball while we develop the next generation
of black and brown baseball reporters and contact creators and

(03:41):
editors and analysts.

Speaker 1 (03:43):
All of that, yep, and more. But we are definitely
proud of that. All right, let's welcome into the Odd
Couple crew. We wouldn't be able to do this find
radio program without them. Alex is our engineer on a
funky flashback Friday, can't wait to see how DP digs
in the crates. Patrick is our producer, feeling it for
Rob G. What's up, Patrick, what's up? Guys? Patrick Splendo? Hey, Pat,

(04:05):
how you doing? And of course mister Steve the Saga.
Steve is at the anchor desk. He'll keep us updated
throughout the program on what's happening. And of course Elijah
is our social media guru, one of the best in
the business, and he will be doing everything on the
social part. But let's start here. Let's start with the
NFL and Steve de Sega just hurt him. Tua just

(04:30):
got a big deal. He just got a contract extension
from the Miami Dolphins. Patrick, what is that? Four years,
two hundred and fifteen? Is that what it is? Yeah?

Speaker 4 (04:41):
About so twelve one sixty seven guaranteed.

Speaker 1 (04:45):
And I'm gonna say this, I'm not speaking out of school,
but me and Chris Bussard we went at it over this.
He claimed he didn't want to pay Tua, that he
wanted to wait and see more, and I was like,
what more is there to see? Okay? What more is
there to see? Jr? The biggest thing was can he

(05:08):
stay healthy? You remember with the concussions two years ago?

Speaker 5 (05:11):
Right?

Speaker 1 (05:11):
He played all the games last year, seventeen game, no concussion,
no issues.

Speaker 5 (05:15):
He played and then he had.

Speaker 1 (05:20):
He was in the top five in a ton of
statistical categories, including passing, yards, touchdowns, all kinds of He
had an incredible year at quarterback. Plus he put up
a seventy piece and we're not talking about Nuggets. We're
talking about a seventy point game in the NFL, which
we hadn't seen since I'm gonna say it, since the

(05:41):
Louisiana Proaches was in escrow. It had been that long.
And so this is a quarterback league. You gotta pay.
If you don't have a quarterback Jr. You can't, you
can't compete, You're not winning anything. Do you have an
issue with the Dolphins cashing out Tua because I don't.

(06:04):
I think that they did what they needed to do.
They hadn't that a quarterback since Dann Marino. They've been
searching for a quarterback for twenty five years.

Speaker 3 (06:14):
I agree they needed to break the bank and pay
a tour. I had this discussion or some other radio
shows with some other guy that works here sometimes, and
he didn't think Tua should be paid in the fifty
million dollar range. And what I explained was, the Dolphins
have no choice. Like you said, Robins a quarterback league.

(06:35):
If you think you have a guy, he's throwing for
four thousand yards, He's throwing close to thirty touchdowns. He
has weapons. Don't forget coming Alabama. Out of Alabama, they
said he was a generational player before he got hurt
fashed his back or on that play, and then the
concussions became a problem. And now he took the jiu
jitsu classes, remember, learned how to fall and roll. Obviously

(06:57):
those classes are helping because he stayed healthy last year.
Everyone said he was a concussion away from his career ending.
That's the only concern that I have. It only takes
one hit to get a concussion and for all those
previous concussions to come back and affect you adversely.

Speaker 1 (07:13):
But he's he's.

Speaker 3 (07:14):
Been when he's healthy. He is a top ten to
fifteen quarterback in the league. And that offense is explosive,
like you said, and they're just getting started. Remember Mike
McDaniel's young in the game. He's the new innovative mind.

Speaker 1 (07:26):
Right.

Speaker 3 (07:26):
He has now a tool in Tuur. He has him
playing his best ball of his career. So they have
a nice connection. Mike mc daniel TUA. Then you have
tyreek Hill, you got Jalen Waddle. I mean you even
got obj now right in the cut.

Speaker 1 (07:41):
And you know what, I just brought it up. I
just want up to since Dan Marino retired before the
two thousand season, you ready, yep? And I said that
the Dolphins have struggled a quarterback. Twenty five players, including Tua,
have started at least one game for the Dolphins since
the turn of the century, and only one of those players,

(08:03):
Ryan Tannehill, signed a multi year extension. Only one out
of the twenty five. What are you looking for? Who
are you going to get? What's your alternative? If you
can answer those questions, then then maybe you got a solution.
But if you camp. Last year, Tour led the NFL

(08:24):
with four six hundred and twenty four passing yards, set
a career high twenty nine touchdown passes, became the first
Dolphin quarterback to lead the league in passing yards since
Dan Marino in nineteen ninety two. Do you hear me?

Speaker 5 (08:38):
Nineteen ninety two, and his total.

Speaker 1 (08:41):
Passing yards were third most in the season in Dolphins history,
behind Dann Marino, who did it twice. So I don't
understand what this like. Oh we want to weigh. I'm
not so sure, not so sure about what. What's the alternative?
If you don't pay him, what are you gonna do?
Start all over? They got two other players, offensive players, right,

(09:07):
making a ton of money.

Speaker 5 (09:10):
So you have a team that's ready to win.

Speaker 1 (09:12):
Now, they got three offensive, skilled players making at least
seventy million in guaranteed money. So this is about today.
This is about now. It ain't a five year plan.

Speaker 3 (09:24):
It's all about today. It's all about now and tur
The only knock they really have on him is his
playoff performances. But think about it, If you wait, though,
you're right, If you wait, you'll be in the same
position like Dallas and some other teams. You'll be paying
him more than fifty three million if he throws the
forty seven hundred yards again this season, fifty three million

(09:47):
and actually takes you somewhere. Fifty three million is gonna
look like a bargain soon, especially after these next quarterback
contracts take place.

Speaker 1 (09:54):
Well, let me tell you this. You know, that's always
the thing. WHOA what about the playoffs? Wa? Yeah, what
about the player? Here's my thing. There's so many things
about the playoffs, and no, he hasn't played well, but also,
you can't win until you win. I heard the same
stuff about a lot of players. I heard that Michael
Jordan could always a great player, doesn't make anybody better,

(10:14):
he can't win.

Speaker 5 (10:15):
I heard that.

Speaker 1 (10:16):
I'll go I'm not making it. I heard that about
Michael Jordan. I heard everybody told me Jason Tatum couldn't win. Jason,
oh great, regularly you play, can't they won? You don't
win until you win sometimes, And I'm just saying with Tua,
I can't look at that guy and say that he
can't win or he can't win a playoff game. They

(10:38):
tried to put that on Lamar Jackson, you know, and
I know he hasn't had the success that people want,
But you can't tell me that guy can't play and
he doesn't give you a chance.

Speaker 5 (10:49):
It's about can you get a chance with these guys.

Speaker 1 (10:51):
That's it. Nobody's perfect. You're not signing the guy who's
already won a playoff game. And here's the other thing.
Jordan Love had a great playoff game right beat the
Dallas Cowboys.

Speaker 5 (11:02):
He's not signed him.

Speaker 1 (11:04):
Run out Okay, won a playoff game, a big playoff
game in Dallas. If that's your criteria, why didn't he
have a contract already stamped, right, Because now they're saying
that's all, but it's only one game.

Speaker 5 (11:16):
We don't know yet.

Speaker 1 (11:16):
What you don't know, you won't know, and you can
sign a guy, you could wait and sign a guy
and you still won't know.

Speaker 3 (11:24):
And sometimes remember it's the quarterback that's waiting and the
team that's waiting to see how the market falls. They
probably wanted to wait to see what TWOA got and
then they would have probably tried to slot Love somewhere
around there. Now that it's clear that two was gonna
be one of the highest paid guys in the league
with he's turned out, Yeah, you got Jared Goff making

(11:44):
fifty three, Lawrence making with fifty three. Now two of
slots in Dak's gonna be above that, so I think.

Speaker 1 (11:53):
But it's actually the three highest r Trevor Lawrence, Joe
Burrow making fifty five fifty five, right, and then two
were making three.

Speaker 4 (12:04):
Being golf fifty three.

Speaker 1 (12:06):
So yeah, it's pretty incredible the money. But that's where
it is when it comes to quarterbacks.

Speaker 3 (12:14):
And it's hard to find them. It's hard to find
good quarterbacks. Let's just be honest, we say these teams
have an abundance. There's abundance of quarterbacks in the NFL.
Look trying to get by Patrick Mahomes. Rob, You're gonna
have a lot of AFC quarterbacks that do not have
championships or have what people call bad playoff losses.

Speaker 1 (12:33):
Right.

Speaker 3 (12:34):
That Kansas City team that went to the Super Bowl
last year on the back of great defense and Patrick.

Speaker 1 (12:40):
Mahomes but mostly defense.

Speaker 3 (12:41):
Let's just defense twenty sixty seven though, they whooped up
on Miami. Right, So you know there's gonna be you
have to have the full team, but you definitely can't
win without the quarterbacks. So you have to pay them
because the stats just keep going up and up.

Speaker 1 (12:57):
And this is the NFL. Listen to what they did.
This is the market. They have made this a quarterback league,
and so you gotta pay those guys. At one time,
it used to be the running backs were the featured
player on the offense. There are games go back and
look where quarterbacks through the ball twelve or.

Speaker 5 (13:16):
Thirteen times a game. That was it. They just throw
the ball fifty times in a game.

Speaker 1 (13:24):
And so if you're throwing the ball fifty times quarterbacks
are gonna get paid. All right, I don't have to.

Speaker 3 (13:31):
Win to do it, because Rob, how many Super Bowls
do you think the top ten highest paid quarterbacks in
the league have combined?

Speaker 5 (13:40):
Give me a number zero, the top ten paid?

Speaker 1 (13:47):
Yes? Yeah, well because Mahomes the future. Mahomes took a
bad deal though he's eleven. Should he should be the
highest paid.

Speaker 4 (13:54):
Ye, but it's all about the future. He has the
highest contract.

Speaker 1 (13:59):
Just not guaranteed. And it's kind of funny you're gonna
have the most money. It was a bad deal. He
should have the highest contract at all times. And if
you're gonna.

Speaker 3 (14:07):
Complain about Tua, complain about Lawrence Burrow, GoF Right, Herbert Jackson, Hurtz,
Merril Watsons.

Speaker 1 (14:13):
None of them have won yet. Yep.

Speaker 4 (14:15):
I mean have to invest.

Speaker 1 (14:16):
It's Jake. If you think you have a winner and
you got a guy, we just sold all of the
stats and records since Dan Marino. They've been looking for
a quarterback since two thy twenty five years. All right,
we want to hear from you Jr. And I on
this unusual we're in lockstep. We both have no issue
with Tua, but maybe you do we want to hear

(14:37):
from the tour, they sayers, or if you agree on this,
hit us up. Eight seven seven ninety nine on Fox
eight seven seven nine nine six sixty three sixty nine.
For you layman, it is a funky flashback Friday. How
about a fish Friday Friday? And you know what the
Dolphins did the right thing. They cashed out Tua. We

(14:59):
want to hear from you. So eight seven seven ninety
nine on Fox, it is The Odd Couple, Rob Parker

what you need to do, stick and stay because you

over Promised. You see, we're having so much fun in
our two hour show. We never get to everything, honestly
because this guy'll be over promising things we never have
time for. Yeah, you blubber list Jam and me.

Speaker 6 (15:51):
Well you know what it's called over promise. You should
be good at it because you've been over promising women
for years.

Speaker 7 (15:55):

Speaker 1 (16:32):
Welcome in our number two of the Odd Couple On
a Funky Flashback Friday, Rob Parker Jr. Gamble. We're broadcasting
live from the tire Rack Dot com Studios tire rack
dot com. We'll help you get there. Unmatched selection, fast,
free shipping, free roadhazard protection and over ten thousand recommended installers.

(16:55):
That's right, tire rack dot Com. The Way tire Buying
should be coming up in about twenty eight minutes. It's
Mark Funky Cole Modina. Of course, Fox Sports Radio NBA
Insider will break down some NBA stuff with them. Also
later on in this hour Shop Talk where we step
outside of sports and talk about things going on. You

(17:15):
might discuss in the barbershop and that kind of stuff.
But h JR, let's do this for our number two.
The Olympics are upon us the opening ceremony in the
rain in Paris, France today, and I just had a thought,
and this is a conversation. I want to get people involved.

(17:36):
I do want people to chime in if you're listening
when it comes to the Olympics. So I'm gonna throw
the number out early. We're gonna get to as many people,
and I really want you to think about this eight seven,
seven ninety nine on Fox. Where do the Olympics fit
in for you? It used to be more prevalent, more

(17:57):
meaningful to me, and as time has gone on, it
has been less. I you know, I used to watch
the ceremony. I used to watch and make sure I
saw some of the big events, and now it's mostly
I catch it on highlights or I don't make time
for it. Is this me? Is this?

Speaker 3 (18:19):
Uh?

Speaker 1 (18:20):
Just getting older? Do other people feel this way? Do
you feel as compelled to make time for the Olympics
It used to be for a lot of countries, you know,
a sense of patriotism and nationalism, and you were you know,
this is our country and we beat that country and

(18:42):
we're the best in the world. But I think it's
a snooze fest. I don't think that it's nearly as
compelling or as interesting to me as it used to be.
And I could be in a minority, but I would
love to hear JR. Where you are on this and
is this must see TV for you? Oh? It's still

(19:03):
must CTV for me.

Speaker 3 (19:04):
But it's not the same as when I was ten,
Right in eighty four, Mary lou rettin no social media.
You know, this Olympics was the centerpiece of sports at
that time. It only happens every four years, and you now,
you know, close to sixty years of age, of course

(19:24):
it is not going to be the same and covering
sports left and right for the last thirty years, it's changed.
Right this social media, you can see clips of these people.
They're not the same strangers that you see any mom
when you get the Olympics. It's still a lot of
people that you just discover when you get to Olympics.

Speaker 4 (19:43):
Great stories. I think it has the same effect.

Speaker 3 (19:46):
It's just that we're a bit older, and as an
older person, I don't it doesn't move me the same
way when it was young. But it doesn't mean that
it's lost its luster or anything, because you got great
stories all the time coming out of the Olympics. But
that are be gonna become future stars. America has great
stories coming out the Olympics. We want to see Team USA.
You want to see.

Speaker 1 (20:09):
I didn't want to see the Dream Team when they
were beating everybody by seventy points. I mean I didn't.
I didn't think that was compelling at all. I mean,
we should have won like that. The only way that
I would be interested in the in in the men's
of the USA BA basketball team is if they lost
or they lost to some team. They shouldn't lose to
I would be interested in that. They say, how in

(20:32):
the world. No, I mean, that's more interesting to me
than them beating up teams that they should is all
I'm saying. I agree, so so that that part to me.
The men's basketball, I expect them to win. I expect
them to win a gold medal, I really do. The
women's soccer, right, haven't they won? Like I don't, have
they not lost or I mean it's all they they have.

Speaker 3 (20:53):
I don't think they've They've lost a couple of times
when they should have won it. Top soccer is very competitive.
They went on a little run back then the two thousands,
but they they they lost to Japan. They had some losses,
but also in Olympics, in the World Cup.

Speaker 1 (21:06):
I also think that you have at one point, I
remember NBC. You remember it used to it used to
it used to be. They used to have all kinds
of uh they would rotate it to different networks, so
it wasn't all and then all of a sudden NBC
took it over and they never gave it up. You
remember it used to be on one year, well four
years was on ABC, the next four years, CBS did it,

(21:27):
then NBC, so it was kind of different. And then
once NBC monopolized it, they started doing where they wouldn't
even show you, uh, players from different countries. They would
edit it out so you would only see like the
Americans and stuff, and I was like propaganda, No, but
it anymore right, like like do not want to see

(21:48):
I want to see who's the best in the world
and competition, not just because when I was living in Detroit,
you'd have to watch the CBC over there in Canada
and they had the entire Olympics. They weren't editing out
people and just showing you Americans and events that people
wanted to see.

Speaker 5 (22:06):
So I don't know, so you're fully into it.

Speaker 1 (22:09):
Did you watch the opening ceremony or you didn't watch
it because you were traveling or you know what I mean.

Speaker 3 (22:14):
Yeah, I would have definitely watched the open ceremony and
I dvr'd it and when I get home, I will
watch because you know, I had it over under or
whether or not Snoop would light up with the Olympic torch.

Speaker 1 (22:27):
So that's what that's what I was waiting for. That's
with the Olympic torch. And did he I don't know,
he didn't I'm my disappointment. I didn't think he would.
I think Snoop likes being on mainstream America and that
probably would have extra amount of some things doing that.

Speaker 3 (22:46):
But I really get so excited still rob about the Olympics,
just watching events that I haven't seen, right that I
would not watch covering sports or being in sports.

Speaker 1 (22:56):
So what are you looking forward to help me with that? Sure?

Speaker 5 (22:59):
Because other than me, uh, I'm gonna.

Speaker 1 (23:03):
Big gymnastics guy. Big.

Speaker 3 (23:06):
Going back to Mary lourettin eighty four when she hit
the perfect ten, I was sitting in South Carolina. I
used to go there for the summer time in my
grandmother's house. They have to remember the thing that used
to catch the bugs in the Yeah, you know the
windows are open. Where in South Carolina's nineteen eighty four
it's a hundred degrees outside.

Speaker 1 (23:28):
The A C no A C no no no no
A C.

Speaker 3 (23:32):
The snap is going off and I'm sitting there, enthralled
and entranced with Mary lourettin with with the flips that
the gymnastics team.

Speaker 1 (23:42):
I'm telling you, Track and Field Lewis, give me one, Moses,
give me one from the last four years where you
were in the same felt the same way four years ago.
What what was it for you?

Speaker 5 (23:52):
So you can't even.

Speaker 1 (23:53):
Give me one?

Speaker 2 (23:54):
No?

Speaker 4 (23:54):
I can't, No, you can, I can I can give
get I can't.

Speaker 5 (23:57):
Go ahead deep because you don't have one I do.

Speaker 3 (24:00):
It was the women's women's swimming with some old Manuel
being like the first black swimmer to get her medal.
That was big, and Natalie Hines and those girls. Olympics swimming.
I always love the track and field, of course, I
love the track and field. Remember USA going head up
with Jamaica, the women and USA coming out on top,

(24:22):
like if I'm recalling it correctly four years ago. But no,
it's not going to be the same nostalgia we had
a year ago. Mark Spitz, Bruce Jenner, those are memorable.

Speaker 1 (24:33):
How about how about get off the tone of the country.
And this is another thing. You know, we're very divided
this country. Let's just face it politically and all kinds
of stuff. Does that take away anything? I know, the
Olympics is supposed to be non political and you're not
supposed to make any kind of statements, and it's supposed
to just be about, uh, the the athletics and nothing political.

(25:00):
But what about that in the United States, are we
in a place where even a game like this the
Olympics can't bring the country together, like people don't feel
as connected with each other, or am I missing it
because I don't feel that.

Speaker 3 (25:15):
I think you're missing in a little bit. Because how
connected is America?

Speaker 1 (25:19):
Right?

Speaker 3 (25:19):
America has more people from other countries living in America
than any other country probably, so there's always been in
America since I was young. You have the people that
came from Greece, whose parents came from Greece. They're rooting
for the Greek team, but they're Americans. They also root
for the Americans. The Jamaicans in America root for the

(25:40):
Jamaican team when they're going against the Americans in track,
but they also root for America if they're playing right.

Speaker 4 (25:48):
It's the nationalism is still there.

Speaker 3 (25:50):
You have people in America whose parents were born in
other countries who root against America.

Speaker 4 (25:56):
So it's kind of hard.

Speaker 3 (25:57):
It's a little different than being from a country where
everybody's basically together. America's never are. Americans never agree on anything,
and that's the beauty of the country in my opinion.
So yes, you'll have a Czechoslovakian from America rooting for
the Czechos handball team.

Speaker 1 (26:15):
I get that, but I'm talking about just unity in
the country and where I think that it just feels
fractured to me, and I just wonder does that interfere
where people feeling good about the Red, white and Blue
and where we are as a nation. And that's what
I'm asking, Hey, Patrick, I want to get Steve de Seger,

(26:39):
Patrick and Alex involved as well, and we want to
hear from you two eight seven seven ninety nine on Fox. Patrick,
let's talk with you a young guy. Swear you on
the Olympics and what does it do for you? Are
you moved by it? Did you go out of your
way to see the opening ceremony? Does it give you
a sense of pride?

Speaker 8 (26:55):
So, like when I got home from because I worked
at another job this morning, when I got home, it
was actually on in my house, so my mom had
it on the living room.

Speaker 1 (27:04):
She wasn't actively watching it, she was she was just background.

Speaker 8 (27:08):
Yeah, it was pure background, just to have the TV on.
I watched maybe a couple of minutes because I was
sitting on the couch. After sitting down, I'm like, what's
going oh? And I saw the boat thing a little bit.
I was like, oh, that's kind of cool. But as
far as like, is it like gott to see or
as you sit hear this snoozeville? For me personally, it's
more of a snoozeville for me. I mean, I like

(27:29):
sports and allso, but like just the Olympics never, it
never captivated me.

Speaker 1 (27:34):
All right, Steve the saga how about you? Steve's been
covering for a long time, and Steve, you're more in
my boat. I've been caught. I just feel like it
doesn't have the same and maybe it's just my age.
So that's why I'm asking other people.

Speaker 9 (27:48):
I loved the opening ceremonies today and I didn't expect
to like it this much, but the finish of it
was very emotional and it was you know, France bit
off a lot, and it turned out to me not more.
They can chew. They tried a lot with this and
it actually worked. They pulled it off. I can't believe it.
At one point they had the French soccer legends Zennidine

(28:09):
Zidan passing the Olympic torch to Ralfael Nadal, who's owned
the French open for so many years and then Na
Doll takes the boat with Nadiya Komenich and Carl Lewis
and Serena Williams and so on. This same river send
that was used to have all the boats of the
delegations the various Olympic teams over two hundred countries in
the Olympics going down the river. This three and a

(28:31):
half miles or so a stadium was not used. And
then when they finally had a sit down part for
the brief IOC speech at the end and that kind
of thing, it was a makeshift stadium outside the Eiffel
Tower with a stage down the middle that was shaped
like the Eiffel Tower, and then at the end Selene
Beyond actually singing at the Eiffel Town right.

Speaker 1 (28:52):
Okay, so you still enjoy it, and today was trying.

Speaker 9 (28:55):
I am unapologetically a sports fan. I will never apologize
for that, which means every year I watch the Wimbledon final,
which the Olympics, World Cup, World Series whatever.

Speaker 1 (29:05):
Okay, h Alex, where are you. I know you're not
the biggest sports fan, but the Olympics shops are bigger
than just your average sports thing.

Speaker 10 (29:14):
I would say probably close to Steve level. I'm a
sports fan, right, Steve, Yeah, it's just about the same,
you know. I have a little bit of a different take.
I think the reason why Rob you might not be
as fascinated with the Olympics, and many people aren't, is
because back when those were so prominent, the world was
a lot more distance from each other. So, for example,
I think social media, Internet and et cetera has brought
us so close to the world. It's almost like we

(29:36):
don't appreciate what it is anymore. Where it was supposed
to be people from all around the world coming together
and competing at sports at the highest level possible, but
in theory, now we see it almost every day.

Speaker 1 (29:47):
Sports, it doesn't have the same effect.

Speaker 10 (29:49):
It just doesn't feel like it's as majestic. So for example,
we're in California, right, So we have Disneyland here. I've
seen families when I'm there. They're literally in a winter wonderland.
But to me, it's like what time are we leaving?
Because I have it every day, you know, I just
feel as the world concept, since it's gotten so much smaller,
it's just not as majestic anymore. And it's probably a
big reason why the World Cup seems to be kind
of deflating as well, because number one, we sack as

(30:10):
the US. But it's just it seems like everything's just
too close now at our fingertips.

Speaker 1 (30:14):
All right, we want to hear from you.

Speaker 8 (30:15):
There.

Speaker 1 (30:16):
It is eight seven seven ninety nine on Fox eight
seven seven nine nine six sixty three sixty nine. Where
are you? Did you watch the opening ceremony? Does the
Olympics still move you? Is it Snoozeville? I would love
to hear from as many people as possible just what
the Olympics do for you and how excited you are
or how uninterested you are. It is The Odd Couple

That's right, tyre rack dot com the way tire buying

(31:24):
should be. And JR. Gamble, who of course is the
managing editor of mlbbro dot com and is a baseball
guy like myself, And this topic, I think, Jr. Is
something that baseball people and fans we want you to
get involved in this. And last night Clayton Kershaw and

(31:47):
Max Schurzer justin Burlandery the old Guard. These are three
legendary pitchers who are all gonna make it into the
Hall of Fame at some point. Sure, and Kershaw came
back from the Dodgers. Sures A has Verlander in strikeouts.
There's a lot of stuff that kind of goes together
with these three guys. And I was on MLB Network

(32:10):
today on MLB Now with Brian Kenny and we did
this as a topic, and I thought this was fascinating,
and I thought to myself, I want to hear what
baseball fans think about this, and who would you pick
if you had to pick one? Of the three of
these guys. And it's not for just you got you

(32:34):
get a chance Jr. To pick one of these pitchers,
whether it's for the postseason, regular see whatever. Here are
your three choices. You're putting together a team. Who are
you picking out of these three Clayton Kershaw, Max Scherzer

(32:54):
or Justin Verlander? And you can't lose any of them, right,
I mean all three are Hall of Fame worthy.

Speaker 4 (33:03):
It's like splitting hairs, it really is.

Speaker 1 (33:05):
But you have to take a look and think.

Speaker 5 (33:07):
So I'm going to start with you as you look
at these three.

Speaker 1 (33:11):
And who would you take? And why?

Speaker 4 (33:14):
Well, I would take Justin Verlander.

Speaker 3 (33:16):
And here is why I feel that Clayton Kershaw is
the most talented of the three. I feel like Max
Scherzer is a dog. He has the most grit, the
most dog in him. But Verlander is a combination of
dog and talent. I think he is the best picture

(33:38):
that has traits of both pictures that make him great.

Speaker 1 (33:43):
Now.

Speaker 3 (33:45):
Max Sherzer, of course, have more wins to strikeouts than
any other pitch in the twenty tens. So if you
go from that era to now twenty twenty to now,
I think Verlander has secured the lead and Kershaw, like
I said, probably more talented than both. But I have

(34:05):
issues with his postseason. With the exception of that Bubble Chip,
the Bubble World Series, the Disney World Series, he hasn't
come through. He's been disastrous prior to that in playoffs.
I mean, worse than most pitchers of his caliber have been.
But Verlander has two World Series, uh and he's are

(34:26):
both legit. He were big time pieces of both those
Astros World Series.

Speaker 1 (34:30):
Right.

Speaker 3 (34:30):
Kershaw kind of backed into this World Series last year.
It really didn't pitch, but he was on the team
with the Texas.

Speaker 1 (34:38):
So no, no, no, he played well in that World Series.
In twenty twenty, he did. He finally got over the hump.
And no, no, no, you mean Kershaw? Yeah, Kershaw.

Speaker 3 (34:48):
Yeah, I'm saying that Max Scherzer backed into his second World.

Speaker 1 (34:52):
Series, the second one with the Okay, I thought you
I was thinking because the Dodgers played in Texas or.

Speaker 3 (34:57):
No, that's when that's when Kershaw s his legacy twenty twenty,
because you remember how bad it was before that for
him and for him to pitch well in twenty twenty
that helped. So like I said, I picked Verlander because
I think he's the best of both worlds, and that's
my reason and I'm gonna.

Speaker 1 (35:14):
Stick to it.

Speaker 3 (35:16):
And also, Kershaw's lack of dependability in the postseason hurts
him and Schres is just a dog. I just think
Verlander is a little bit more talented. Sheres is more
of a technician, right, He's more anal and cerebral with
his stuff. So I love Verlander in that situation. But
like I said, you can't go wrong with either of them.

(35:37):
But I'm gonna take JV since I was asked.

Speaker 1 (35:40):
Yeah, I mean, here's the thing. Kershaw's resume is ridiculous.
Is it's just ten time All Star Okay, NLMVP three,
Cy Young's Triple Crown and pitching in twenty eleven.

Speaker 5 (35:55):
I could go on a gold Glove.

Speaker 1 (35:57):
He three times, he was the National League wins leader
five times, he led in the National League at e
r ray three times, he led his strikeouts, Yeah, pitched
a no hitter.

Speaker 5 (36:09):
I mean he's done everything.

Speaker 3 (36:11):
His e alray less than one hundred career losses, which
is crazy.

Speaker 1 (36:16):
Right, And I mean, you talk about how great Verlander
is compared to Kershaw, right, and I hear you. Kershaw
his e RRA is two point four to eight for
his career. Verlander is three point two.

Speaker 3 (36:31):
Five, right, you know, I mean they've only had one
one year both sure as the n uh Verlander you know,
lower than Kerkshaw's career ERA, right.

Speaker 1 (36:43):
I mean, k that's what I'm saying. Like Kershaw's regular
season and it is as good as anybody. If it
was just based off of that he got a baseball,
he would it would be like, uh, not even a conversation.
I'm serious if it was just talking about that. Now,
what hurts him is what you talked about is the postseason.

(37:06):
The postseason hurts Kershaw and the injuries of late help.
And when you look at Verlander, the part that's hard
to pass over or not acknowledge. He's seventeen and twelve
in the postseason. And here's the other thing that's incredible

(37:27):
is and I watched Verlander very from the day one
when he's with a Tiger when he came up, so
I've seen his whole career, and Verlander had like a
six ERA when he first started pitching. In the postseason,
he's dropped that all the way down a three point
five to eight after starting off a little rocky, as
you know, as a young pitcher in the postseason and

(37:48):
the seventeen and twelve and a couple of World Series
and all the other stuff that he's been able to
put together. And this is not to discount Max Schurzer.
Max Schurzer, I agree with you and the term being
a dog a bulldog. He is a bulldog and he's
passed justin Verlanders strikeouts. This guy's a strikeout machine. I

(38:09):
got to watch him as well. I still can't believe
that there was one year in Detroit when they had
the three reigning Cy Young Award winners on the same staff.
So Verlander, Scherzer, and David Price had won the three
previous Cy Youngs and they were all on the same team.

(38:31):
And guess what. They went to the postseason against the
Baltimore Orioles and the Tigers got swept and all three
of them lost. And I'll never forget the picture inside
the Orioles clubhouse, they had three pictures poster size of
the Cy Young Award Jr. With exes through all three.

(38:52):
They had three of them, and they had an ex
across all three hanging up in their clubhouse because they
beat three he Cy Young Award winners in a row
to sweep the Tigers in a postseason. So I love Schurz.
I saw him up close pitching Detroit. We know what
kind of guy he is. But I, as much as

(39:14):
I hate to agree with you, I think there's no
way you cannot take Justin Verlander. And I know Dodger
fans aren't happy. They're saying, hey, well, Kershaw did bounce back.
He did justify or or legitimize his career with the
effort that he had in twenty twenty because he was
a big reason why they won that even though it

(39:36):
was the Bubble Championship. I get all that, but everybody
else had the same opportunity to win a championship that year,
and the Dodgers in Verlander, I mean, the Dodgers and
Kershaw were able to do it. So it's an interesting
thing because all three of these guys are Hall of
famers and all are great. But if I had to
play pick an order, it would be Verlander, Kershaw, and Scherzer.

(39:59):
Where would you what would be your ranking? Yeah?

Speaker 3 (40:03):
Similar, same thing rather Verlander, Kershaw, Scherzer. But I'm trusting
shirzim on the big game. That's the thing. Like Clayton
Kershaw is thirteen and thirteen with a four point four
to nine ERA.

Speaker 1 (40:17):
Which is way higher than his two point four to
eight in the regular season. I mean it's almost double.

Speaker 3 (40:22):
Yep in thirty nine appearances. I beg to ask how
many pitchers of his caliber having ERA that high over
that many appearances right in the postseason.

Speaker 1 (40:34):
I don't think there's too many. And the other thing, too,
is when you think about the Dodgers and during the
Clayton Kershaw era, they won a ton of divisions, they
won a ton of games, and most of you think
of the Dodgers is disappointment, yeah, and things not going
right or Kershaw giving up the big home run or

(40:55):
or you know, giving up the big hit and people
being disappointed. And I think that's what clouds his career
and what he's been able to do. But we want
to open this up to people. Verlander feels like it's obvious,
but I don't think it's that obvious. People might look
at Clayton Kershaw and can you make a case for

(41:16):
Clayton Kershaw that EO raise ridiculous two point four eight lifetime?
You know, if you get a four now in the
Major League Baseball, you're you're great. They want to pay
you thirty million dollars if you have a four, and
he's got a two point four eight, and that's mixed
in with injuries and all kinds of other stuff. He's
at the battle. He's been a machine in lights out

(41:40):
and lights out for the most part. Eight seven seven
nine nine six sixty three sixty nine or eight seven
seven ninety nine on Fox? Who would you pick? Would
you pick Verlander? Would you pick Kershaw? Or would you
pick Max Schurzer. We want to hear from you. I
know they're Kershaw fans out there who will give him

(42:00):
the benefit of the doubt. It is the odd Couple
on a funky Flashback Friday right here on Fox Sports Radio,
Stick and Stay America.
