(01:19):
is en route to the gold medal. I think it's
tomorrow they play Serbia. Correct, yes, and then the winner
of that game will play the winner of the Germany.
Speaker 1 (01:29):
France game on the other side of the bracket.
Speaker 4 (01:32):
But we believe that Team USA is headed toward its
fifth straight gold medal, and this year I guess it's
reinstated from two thousand and four. I never even remember this,
but they have a most Valuable Player award for the
player who you know was the best in the Olympics,
(01:55):
which Martin quickly I don't like that, don't. I think
getting the Olympics team sports it should just be about
the gold medal. Because one of the great things about
these dream teams and redeem teams and all that is
that guys don't care about the stats. At least they
(02:16):
don't remember Kobe with the Redeemed team saying, man, I'm
just defending right, I'm just locking people up. We got
enough scores, and then he scored in the gold medal
game against Spain because they needed him to.
Speaker 1 (02:28):
But guys just play to win.
Speaker 4 (02:31):
And I get I love stats, I love accolades, I
love awards.
Speaker 1 (02:37):
Those are how we do measure the best player.
Speaker 4 (02:40):
So I love that in leagues during seasons and playoff
time and stuff.
Speaker 1 (02:45):
But during the Olympics, where it's only six games.
Speaker 4 (02:49):
I think it's refreshing where it doesn't matter and you
just go out there and play well.
Speaker 1 (02:55):
Especially Chris real quick.
Speaker 5 (02:57):
When you look at the Team USA, that's established, right,
and it's not necessarily true for all the other internationals HEAs,
but Team USA, you got guys who are changing the
way they play to fit into this whole picture of
the team.
Speaker 1 (03:10):
Right. All of these guys could go out and drop fifty.
We've seen it on any.
Speaker 4 (03:14):
Night, absolutely absolutely, and so nobody really cares who's the
most outstanding player. But nonetheless they have put that into
this year's Olympics and you can argue and I tell
you what and Rob g correct me if I'm wrong.
Finding the cumulative stats for Team USA, like what the
(03:41):
averages are during the Olympics is like trying to break
into Fort Knox list. Have you been able to find
the Martin?
Speaker 5 (03:48):
I mean, it really is like going to dial up
internet like it is. So I found one on like
my Google Team USA stats box score. It's took me
to ESPN dot UK. I'm like, what are we doing here?
Laynwich is not covering this United States? I don't I
can't believe it, and.
Speaker 4 (04:04):
You might get the box score for that game, but
overall the three games come back, I can't find it.
It's ridiculous, not even at least from what I could
tell on the Team USA or USA Basketball website.
Speaker 1 (04:19):
What is going on? Am I wrong? Look, they don't
even have minutes played. It's ridiculous.
Speaker 4 (04:27):
But anyway, I think I know he has He's not
the leading scorer, I don't believe, and he hasn't led
them in scoring in any of the games, the three games,
the three Olympic games, the other ones.
Speaker 1 (04:39):
Remember we're exhibitions.
Speaker 4 (04:41):
But I think Lebron is probably the MVP because the
floor game he's playing is tremendous. He's not the point
guard Magic Johnson is, but he's playing point now and he's.
Speaker 1 (04:53):
Give me your little shades of that.
Speaker 4 (04:55):
But I'm not saying he's been like Magic. Magic is
by far the best point guard ever. But yeah, he's playing.
I think he's the glue.
Speaker 1 (05:03):
He's the one bringing everybody together.
Speaker 4 (05:06):
But here's what I want to throw out to you, Martin,
because there's nobody, I don't think anybody saying Lebron's the
best player in the world. That's that's I think it's
Nikola Jokic. Some might think it's Giannis Hans Takumpo, some
might think it's Luka Doncis, But I don't think many
people are arguing that it's Lebron. But the play in
(05:26):
this these Olympics, he's been their best.
Speaker 1 (05:30):
Player, I believe.
Speaker 4 (05:31):
And so here's the question I want to throw out
at you, Martin that many people are asking. Is Lebron
still the best American player in the NBA?
Speaker 5 (05:45):
No, No, he's not, especially when you consider the way
that we when we generally talk about the best player
in the world in an NBA you know, that's generally
throughout the course of a season, eighty two games in
and out, and what you can do in the postseason, Right,
that's where we kind of rank that. I don't think
Lebron is. But the way the thing is, though, is
(06:05):
he the best player on this team? Should he deserve
the MVP? I think he definitely deserves the MVP because,
as you mentioned about this floor game and his style
of play allows those guys who are if he's on
the ball, it allows everybody who is a great shooter
to really play well. That's part of the reason why
Devin Booker has been out there for a majority. Like
(06:27):
Devin Booker, spots seems to be solidified on TUSA.
Speaker 4 (06:30):
I think he's leading him in plus minus. Again, if
I could ever find the stack.
Speaker 5 (06:34):
Right, you have to find it in somebody's article that
actually was there, probably tracking misshots and makes. But his
style of play and the way the Olympics are set up,
there's nobody blowing by him. And if there is somebody
blowing by him, you got either Anthony Davis, baman at
Bio or Joel Embiid behind you to go ahead and
take care of that and clean it up right. He
(06:56):
doesn't have to play the same level of defense he'd
have to play in the NBA, nor honestly the same
level of offense, because his team is not required for
him to be both the best scorer on the team
and the best passer on the team.
Speaker 1 (07:09):
To reach a high level of success.
Speaker 4 (07:11):
I'm with you, Like I said, this is six games
and Kobe we saw score sixty points in his last
NBA game, and I know he took fifty shots.
Speaker 1 (07:21):
I think literally fifty shots. It was fifty on the dot. Yeah,
so I know.
Speaker 4 (07:26):
But my point is that Martin Jordan, I don't know
if it's his first or second season with the Wizards.
He had several fifty point games with the Wizards. Now
he wasn't the same Michael Jordan, but that shows you,
like when you get older, you can still do it
(07:47):
in spurts, whether that spurt is a part of a game,
an entire game, an entire.
Speaker 1 (07:54):
Week or two.
Speaker 4 (07:56):
You can still do it in spurts when you get older.
The problem is you can't do it consistently for eighty
freaking games and then the playoffs. And so this is
perfect for Lebron, Like six games, fairly spread out.
Speaker 1 (08:13):
When you play, you're only gonna play about.
Speaker 4 (08:16):
Twenty five minutes or so when you go to the beitch.
You got so many great players on your team that
they don't lose the lead. So it's not like you
have to come in and regain the lead. And that's
why Martin, he's playing good defense right now. A lot
of his offense is being created by his defense. Again,
you can do that for six games when you've had
(08:37):
a few months off and when you got breaks and
you're not playing heavy minutes and all of that, and
the minutes you play Martin offensively, that's where you can
kind of rest. You got so many freaking weapons, you
don't have to create everything. But when you get when
Lebron gets into the eighty two game NBA season, now
(08:58):
that's what you said, guys will be.
Speaker 1 (09:00):
Blowing by him a lot.
Speaker 4 (09:02):
In defensively, these the European players, as great as something
that may be, they're not the athletes speed quickness that
you see in the NBA, and so they're not just
blowing by Lebron or blowing by anybody in that regard.
And so that's another reason he can shine in this situation.
(09:24):
And so I'm with you, you don't in the eighty
two game NBA season.
Speaker 1 (09:31):
I don't think he's the best American. But I will say.
Speaker 4 (09:33):
This Martin and I can't remember who it was we
were talking with who said this that there is no
now he said there is no best player in the world.
I think that was Sean King when he was co
hosted with me last week. As I look at the
Americans in the league, I mean, I don't know.
Speaker 1 (09:58):
What American I would say is the best player in
the world.
Speaker 4 (10:02):
I mean, you want to argue the best player in America, Yeah,
if you want to argue Anthony Davis, I thought he
was the Lakers best player last year because of his defense.
Speaker 1 (10:13):
I had him on second team all.
Speaker 4 (10:15):
Inb I think he made second team, and I think
Lebron made third.
Speaker 1 (10:19):
If I'm correct, that's what my ballot was. You could
argue that, but I don't know. I mean, it's hard.
Speaker 4 (10:25):
I don't feel comfortable saying Anthony Davis is the best American.
I think Anthony Edwards, especially if you want to project
a little bit of what he's gonna.
Speaker 1 (10:36):
Do next year, Chris.
Speaker 4 (10:38):
But I think it might be a space where we
really are, like, well, right now, nobody's fully gained that
those reigns where you can definitively say, oh, he's the
best American.
Speaker 1 (10:51):
Are you with me on that or do you think
there is behind the scenes?
Speaker 5 (10:54):
Real quick I walked into last commercial break to ask
Rob g who is the best American born player in
the world, because I thought you might have had a
different opinion, So I was prepared to defend mine right
and I said, I'm trying to decide between both the
Anthony's Lizzy legitimate, trying to figure out which one I
like better than both the Anthony.
Speaker 1 (11:14):
I can make a compelling argument. I feel like for
both of them.
Speaker 5 (11:17):
I think I'd have Anthony Davis a slight notch ahead
of Anthony Edwards just because of a little bit of
a reputation of Like, obviously Anthony Davis's health is a problem,
and this is kind of the first year we have
seen Anthony Edwards at the highest level in terms of
Western Conference finals and so on. He's obviously been in
the NBA for a few years before that. But I
(11:38):
think I have to give the nod to ad right
now with the with the caveat that Anthony Edwards is
a close, close second. But to your point, I think
that like we talked about the gap between quarterbacks and
talk Patrick Mahomes, and it's a grand canyon between him
and everybody else.
Speaker 1 (11:56):
It ain't no grand canyon in the NBA anywhere.
Speaker 5 (11:58):
It's a solid set of probably four to five guys
who on any given night can lay claim to it.
You're talking about the Americans, Yes, the Americans, right, And
I think.
Speaker 4 (12:09):
We agree that I would say the three best players
in the world, would you Joannis and not in this order,
but jokicch Jiannis and Luca Sure.
Speaker 1 (12:19):
Now, let's keep it real.
Speaker 4 (12:21):
And and I think that's pretty clear, but Jokic went
out in the second round this year, Janis obviously has
been injured, and Luca of course got to the finals,
but they went out pretty pretty meekly. Wow, well, I
could see any of them.
Speaker 1 (12:41):
Going out in the second round again.
Speaker 4 (12:44):
So while I think they're the three best players, you
look at their numbers throughout the year, you look at
their impact on the game. I think that's fair and
let's keep it real. Jokicsh does not have like Lebron does.
This is one of the reasons I say you can't
say Lebron's the best player, certainly over an eighty two
game season.
Speaker 1 (13:02):
He does have Anthony Davis Martin.
Speaker 4 (13:05):
Who will you Anthony Davis the Jokic or Luca or
or Joannis?
Speaker 1 (13:11):
You know what I mean.
Speaker 4 (13:11):
It's over and so I think that's something you have
to really look at. But we are in a we're
in the era of parody. I mean, heck, Boston might
win it the game again. Jason Tatum's great, he could
be All NBA again for the fourth straight year. But
I don't think anybody's ready to say with good reason
he's the best player in the world. He's one of them,
(13:33):
but he's not the best player in the best American
player in the world.
Speaker 1 (13:36):
I mean, they're people arguing he's not the best player on.
Speaker 5 (13:38):
His team, right right right, you guys with Jalen Brown
winning both MVPs. So I'm right there with you. Lebron's
not the best American player boor player in the world.
But I tell you this, I really have enjoyed watching
him play this floor general style of basketball, and it
does make me just wish, like Rob Polenka, just wake
up a little bit and get this guy some wing
(13:59):
help a little bit.
Speaker 1 (14:01):
Well, you know.
Speaker 4 (14:03):
And I don't know if it was when I think
it was when Westbrook went to the Lakers, and I
said it all over the place TV radio.
Speaker 1 (14:12):
I was saying, Lebron should be the point guard.
Speaker 4 (14:16):
Lebron should be the point guard period, Like he's the
best decision maker.
Speaker 1 (14:20):
He doesn't have.
Speaker 4 (14:21):
To do all the scoring that he used to do anymore,
and unless he just wants to try what he does
clearly want to keep scoring.
Speaker 1 (14:27):
But you know he.
Speaker 4 (14:28):
Could get in by everybody involved. And what I was
told from like people close to Lebron and all that
is that he can't do that anymore.
Speaker 1 (14:37):
He can't run the point anymore for a two games?
Speaker 4 (14:41):
Yeah, yeah, and for forty minutes a game or thirty
seven minutes game or whatever it might be. And that
puts too much pressure on him or just fatigue, you know.
Speaker 1 (14:50):
Which I get.
Speaker 4 (14:51):
But that again, he could do that Barton in these
Olympics for six games, but he can't do that during
the NBA season.
Speaker 1 (14:58):
All right, it's the oka about Chris and Martin.
Speaker 4 (15:02):
We want to ask you eight seven seven ninety nine
on Fox eight seven seven nine nine six sixty three
sixty nine. Is Lebron James still the best American player
in the world or you may even think he's still
the best player in the world period?
Speaker 1 (15:20):
What are your.
Speaker 4 (15:20):
Thoughts if it's now Lebron who is At eight seven

nine on Fox is your turn the way in on
uh is Lebron still America's the best American player in
(17:26):
the world.
Speaker 5 (17:26):
Let's go to Josh and Arizona. You're on the odd
couple on Fox Sports Radio.
Speaker 7 (17:32):
How y'all boys doing appreciate you'll having me on? Yes, sir,
all right, I'm not getting confused by what's going on
with the Olympics. Man, this this guy's the only person
that's not adjusting to anything, you know, so everybody's adjunting
around him. He's playing inferior talent and he's looking really
good at doing it, playing twenty minutes a game. So
that's cool, but that's not going to necessarily transition to
(17:55):
the NBA and what he has to face there where
his team is going to be stacked with a bunch
the superstars and he has to actually play longer minutes
in a longer season like y'all just said, So I'm
not I can name at least five different American players
I would take right now over Lebron in the league.
And I also say this, Antonio Davis. I remember, like
(18:16):
a week Daniels, Antonio Daniels, Yes, sir, he made a
comment like a we can have ago about why Tatum
wasn't playing because he played so many minutes. That was
the weakest understanding I've ever heard of in my life.
Let let's look at this. Stephen Curry has not been
(18:37):
playing well at all during the Olympics. He has not
adjusted to what's going on. He's still playing, obviously he's
Steph Curry. But if this whole thing was about adjustments
for the right situation, Steve Kurry would have took him
out a long time ago. So I don't want to
hear that.
Speaker 4 (18:54):
Ridiculous respect his statue in the league and that six.
Speaker 7 (19:01):
Nine virtual Cayle Wing. There's no reason why Tatum shouldn't play.
Speaker 1 (19:04):
But well, Tatum.
Speaker 4 (19:05):
Hasn't been playing great. He's not been playing terrible. But yeah,
he hasn't been playing great. But this is a whole
different situation. You're right, like, you can't you should not
make I would say this, Martin, you can make NBA
judgments with the international players off of this, like if
Jo Kicch were somehow to beat America tomorrow basically by himself.
Speaker 1 (19:29):
To me, that would be like a little bit of
a legacy mover.
Speaker 4 (19:34):
I mean, it's legacy Aria, but it's a significant thing
you add on there, because the international players are facing
an uphill battle.
Speaker 1 (19:41):
They're playing the Americans.
Speaker 4 (19:43):
Who have far more talent, and if you can win
that type of game, that's tremendous the Americans. I don't
think you can make NBA legacy death like statements in
the Olympics, because our teams are so great that we're
just we're way more talented than all the other the teams.
Speaker 1 (20:00):
Yeah, but you also have to have a level of
legacy to begin with.
Speaker 5 (20:04):
Because let's say, like you know, France beat Germany beat France,
and we beat Serbia, and then Dennis Shrewder and Franz
Wagner beat the United States. I don't think either of
anybody's going to be looking like, oh, these are the
next best guys.
Speaker 1 (20:16):
That's true.
Speaker 5 (20:17):
Let's go to Mike A good point. Let's go to
Mike in Texas. You're on the couple of Fox Sports Radio.
Speaker 1 (20:22):
Hey, how you guys going life is good?
Speaker 8 (20:24):
Good man? Kevin Durant is the best American player, Uh,
in an international game and in the NBA, Kevin Duranty
just because of his situations, you know, we lose track
of that opinion of how loud of it he is.
Speaker 1 (20:44):
This guy, what's this situation?
Speaker 8 (20:46):
Well, you know he had and he got Phoenix, you know,
I mean he's but you know, as far as pure
talent on the International States, if he need to get
fifty buckets for the United States to win, he can
do that. He's the only guy I would trust to
be able to do that. No, No, I mean he's.
Speaker 4 (21:05):
I mean, you you act like he in a bass
bad situations in the in the NBA, not get Brooklyn,
guys were heard vaccination all that.
Speaker 8 (21:14):
I'm saying.
Speaker 1 (21:14):
He's not.
Speaker 8 (21:15):
He's not winning championships in the NBA.
Speaker 1 (21:17):
He ain't win this series.
Speaker 8 (21:19):
I know he's still doing it, but he still is going.
He's still the most talented person that you know, you're
telling me Kevin Durant, it's not the most talented person. Yes,
Lebron don't have to do a Carl Malone move, you know,
this season, and he's gonna have to know they're gonna
have to redo offense. But it's a three point league
and you.
Speaker 4 (21:38):
Gotta Durand don't even shoot a lot of threes in
the NBA, but when he needs.
Speaker 1 (21:43):
To shoot more.
Speaker 8 (21:48):
But I mean, you tell, I mean, he's still not
the most talented. Uh he pays defense.
Speaker 4 (21:54):
I'm definitely telling you he's not the most talent. He's
a great all time player. Don't get me wrong. I'm
not trying to be with Kevin Durant. He ain't the
best American player in the world Martin Is. I just
think it's clear.
Speaker 1 (22:06):
That's not to take anything away from I think there
was a time he was. But when I mean he.
Speaker 4 (22:12):
Was, because I mean when has he, like Lebron clearly had.
Speaker 1 (22:16):
A long stretch of the best player in the world.
Speaker 4 (22:19):
Did Durant, Like when did Durant have a year where
And I'm not even trying to diss I'm just asking,
was there a year where he was the best player
in the world.
Speaker 5 (22:29):
I think the first year of Golden State, like that
first year especially better than Lebron. I mean had to
head the finals into me.
Speaker 1 (22:37):
He had the.
Speaker 4 (22:37):
Finals on a freaking, ridiculously stacked team.
Speaker 1 (22:41):
You know how much easier it is to and we
see it in the.
Speaker 5 (22:44):
Olympics, Like I'm that the Warriors were not stacked. But
I'm thinking Kevin Durant was the best player on that
team at that time.
Speaker 1 (22:52):
Yeah he was, but he wasn't.
Speaker 4 (22:54):
I don't think he was better than Lebron still now
and again he was great. He deserved finals MVP. I
I just think when you it is easier to play
when you got a ton of talent around you. And
I just think it made it really easy for Durant.
And I'm not trying to say easy, Rent, I'm just
saying he had much more help than Lebron. All Right,
(23:16):
we got our guests coming on. Mike Defabo, Pittsburgh Steelers
beat writer for the Athletic.
Speaker 1 (23:23):
I'm not sure if he's here yet, Okay, but we're waiting.
He's gonna.
Speaker 4 (23:28):
I mean, this is a great, great guy to talk
to right now, Martin, Pittsburgh Steelers beat writer for the Athletic,
And we're gonna get into Kevin Durant on the last segment.
Speaker 1 (23:39):
Of the show. All Right, Mike, welcome to the Odd Couple.
Speaker 9 (23:44):
Hey, thank you for having me. I appreciate it.
Speaker 1 (23:46):
No, we appreciate you joining us. I mean, so, what's
going on.
Speaker 4 (23:50):
We've seen we saw a report that the Steelers have
agreed to a deal with the Niners, and the person
that released it said this, Brandon Ayuk is going to Pittsburgh,
but no one else has really confirmed it.
Speaker 1 (24:05):
Obviously a lot.
Speaker 4 (24:06):
Of the normal new national news breakers haven't confirmed it. Like, so,
what what is your understanding of where we're at right now?
Speaker 9 (24:14):
Well, let me tell you.
Speaker 10 (24:16):
At the Athletic, Diana Russini has reported, and I'm a
part of the athletic, that there are ongoing conversations and
the Steelers are absolutely interested in Brandon Aiyuk. The issue
with this deal is that to get something done, it's
going to take basically take three parts. The first part is,
you know, you're going to have to be a team
that Brandon Ayuk wants to go to, and as we've seen,
(24:39):
you know, teams like the Patriots and teams like the
Cleveland Browns, he might not be so interested in going there.
We know that he is interested in the Steelers because
he went on the Pivot podcast and said if he
didn't play for the forty nine Ers, the Commanders or
the Steelers or his preferred destinations, So that makes sense.
The second part of this is you have to be
a team that's willing to give him the big contract
that he wants, and thing have gone this far with
(25:01):
the Steelers. The Steelers are a team that has the
salary cap space, and even as far back as the
NFL Draft, you know, General manager Omar Kahan was talking
about how he restructured Alex Tismith gel to create enough
flexibility to add a player, and he was asked specifically
about adding a wide receiver when he was answering that. Now,
the third part is the part where there's a hang up.
(25:22):
You have to satisfy the San Francisco forty nine ers,
and that's where they have an issue right now. And
I think that that's where they're still trying to hammer
out some details and we'll have to see if things
come together, because you know, the forty nine Ers right now,
they're in a championship window and they feel like they
can run it back with the same team they've got
and get back to the super Bowl. So if they
trade the top caliber wide receiver like Brandon I, they're
(25:44):
looking for compensation in return that ideally as a roster
player and even more ideally a wide receiver. The Steelers
right now are.
Speaker 9 (25:52):
In a rebuilding mode.
Speaker 10 (25:53):
Of their own, and they don't have a lot of
guys that would fit that criteria, and they're looking for
a wide receiver for a reason. Their depth charted wide
receiver is basically George Pickens, a huge drop off and
then everybody else. And so you know, for me, the
way that I see this dynamic reading the tea leaves,
I think what it's going to take is either the
Steelers bending.
Speaker 9 (26:15):
In some way and deciding, Okay, we will give you a.
Speaker 10 (26:17):
Player that we're relucky to give up to make this happen,
or the forty nine Ers are going to have to say, Okay,
look this has gone on too long. I get frustrated
by this. We're ready to deal him. We'll just punt
and we'll take a couple of draft picks and move on.
So I think that that's probably where things stand right now,
and we'll kind of have to wait and monitor things
to see if they finally come together and agree to term.
Speaker 5 (26:40):
Mike, good to talk to you again, Martin Wise here
we actually shared a barstool at the Habitdasher.
Speaker 1 (26:44):
And Mobile earlier this year. It was a good time
had by all.
Speaker 5 (26:49):
But I want to ask you, Mike Tomlin said, initially
when Russell Wilson moved to Pittsburgh, essentially that that was.
Speaker 1 (26:56):
Going to be the guy.
Speaker 5 (26:58):
Now he hasn't been there, and he said, yeah, of course,
it's going to be a competition. How much is Russell
Wilson's status as the number one quarterback on the depth
chart solidified at this moment in time.
Speaker 10 (27:10):
Well, it's interesting because when when Mike Tomlin acquired both
of these quarterbacks this offseason, what he said was that
Russell Wilson had pole position, and it was that title
that frustrated Kenny Pickett and ultimately led to him getting
traded to Philadelphia and the Steelers having the opportunity to
bring in Justin Fields to stage this competition and through camp,
(27:31):
that whole competition or whatever kind of competition it might become,
has been complicated by the fact that Russell Wilson was
injured a couple of days before they opened training camp.
He was pushing a sled actually during the team's conditioning test,
which is kind of a bad look for the team
and for the new strength staff, and so.
Speaker 1 (27:48):
Last he got hurt.
Speaker 9 (27:50):
That is how he got hurt.
Speaker 10 (27:51):
That is straight from Russell Wilson's mouth. How he got hurt,
and it's kind of wild to believe that they would
be having their you know, presumably they're starting quarterback participate
in something like that, And what it's done is that
it has complicated this situation all last week, Russell Wilson
was a very limited participant in practice. He did go
through individual drills and through routes on air things of
(28:13):
that nature, but he did not participate in eleven on
eleven settings other than a couple of little handoffs where
he wouldn't have to evade a live rush or worry
about that type of thing lineman landing at his feet.
So this week he's been a more active participant, but
still not quite ready. When Tom went today talked to
the media and described some of the guys who are
going to be out due to injuries, he listed Russell
(28:34):
Wilson within that category. But interestingly, he also still listed
Russell Wilson on the depth chart as QV one, and
when we asked him does he still have full position,
he referred back to that depth chart, saying yes, that
that depth chart is real. So you know, the way
I look at this dynamic, Russell Wilson might not be
the same nine time pro Bowl or Super Bowl caliber
(28:56):
quarterback that he was in his prime, but he is
a veteran and right now with the Steelers team that's
going to lean on defense, going to run the ball
a lot, I think that they would prefer to have
a more risk averse quarterback in somebody who is you know,
been around the league and can more so manage the offense. So,
you know, the way I look at it, I would
think that either Russell Wilson's injury would have to get
(29:18):
worse or he would have to really stumble, or Justin
Fields would really have to shine in the preseason and
open their eyes in a different way to earn the
starting job week one.
Speaker 9 (29:28):
But that's just week one, you know.
Speaker 10 (29:30):
I think this is the dynamic that we're going to
fall throughout the season.
Speaker 1 (29:33):
How is Fields?
Speaker 4 (29:34):
I don't know if you're at practices, but how has
Fields looked in the you know, he's at basically a
week where you know, he's getting the first team reps
and there's really no competition from Russ, So how has
he looked during this week or so?
Speaker 9 (29:51):
Yeah.
Speaker 10 (29:51):
So the Steelers are unique in the fact that they
hold an open trading camp at Rotrob at Saint pancent
College and reporters and fans are allowed to watch all
of them. So I've seen all of just fields grows.
I've seen all of Russell Wilson's throws. The way I'll
describe it to you is this, there are situations where
you look at it and you say, that is why
Justin Fields was drafted eleventh overall.
Speaker 9 (30:11):
When he keeps the ball on.
Speaker 10 (30:12):
A read option, he is the most dangerous man on
the football field with the ball in his hand in
open fields. And when he uncorks a deep ball, you
could see he has the NFL caliver arm talent. By
the same token, there are situations where you look at
it and you say, okay, now, that is why the
Steelers were able to acquire.
Speaker 9 (30:29):
Him for just a fourth round pick.
Speaker 10 (30:31):
And so I think that all these reps have definitely
benefited him because through okas and mandatory mini camp where
we were able to watch, you know, he wasn't as sharp,
he wasn't as quick as getting through his reads. He
wasn't making quick, accurate decisions. And so I think he
is benefiting from all of these reps and maybe closing
the gap a bit. You know, I know one thing
(30:53):
that specifically he's been working on with the new quarterbacks
coach Tom Marks has been working on having a steadier
base in the pocket. In turn that leading to more
accurate throws and being able to throw with timing and anticipation,
and so you know, he is improving in taking advantage
of this. But you know, I guess my sense of
it is, I don't know that it's going to be
(31:13):
enough for him to overcome the lave that Russell Wilson
has Game one. If it entices the Steelers, maybe they
need to install a Justin Field's package, or maybe if
things don't go well for Russ early in the season
have a bit of a shorter leash. That might be
the case. But again, I don't know that he's going
to close the gap completely on Russell Wilson this preseason.
Speaker 1 (31:32):
Martin, let me follow this up. If you go for it.
There have been taught with Teddy Brewski.
Speaker 4 (31:38):
Eric Manngini, former Jets and Browns coach, on my show
First Things Versus, said that he thinks the steal they
think the Steelers should go with two quarterbacks, not a
package for fields, but actually two quarterbacks, whichever one's playing
better or whichever one fits you. Know the opponent better
gets to play. What are your thoughts on that? And
(32:02):
do you think, I mean, is there any indication that
anything like that could ever happen?
Speaker 10 (32:09):
Yeah, I mean, I mean, I think it goes back
to the old saying if you have two quarterbacks, you
don't have one. And I think that in today's NFL.
I guess you know, Teddy brucek you would know a
lot more than me about this.
Speaker 9 (32:19):
But you know, I think that the number of.
Speaker 10 (32:21):
Reps that you have during a practice setting, there are
very few for a starting quarterback, and if you divide
those up, that's challenging. And I also wonder what's the
dynamic in the locker room. Are you having guys within
the locker.
Speaker 9 (32:33):
Room picking teams and saying I'm a Russ.
Speaker 10 (32:35):
Guy or I'm a Justin guy.
Speaker 9 (32:37):
So I just don't know how that would go.
Speaker 10 (32:39):
But you know, I think the thing that helps Justin
is that the Steelers under Arthur Smith want to run
the ball a lot. They've made no bones about that.
Arthur Smith has come out saying we want to be
the most physical offense in the entire NFL. They bulked
up that offensive line to do so.
Speaker 9 (32:54):
They have two good dynamic backs.
Speaker 10 (32:56):
Just the mere threat of Justin Fields keeping the ball
on that read option is going to make that ground
game even more lethal and more exciting. So, you know,
I like Justin Fields, and I think that he has
a lot of potential, and I wonder if the Steelers
can be the team that unlocks him. And I do
wonder if maybe a package of plays turns into them
maybe him winning that starting job or or taking that
(33:19):
away from Russell Wilson at some point. But I do
think that it's kind of complicated if you're going to
try to play two quarterbacks in the NFL.
Speaker 1 (33:26):
All right.
Speaker 4 (33:27):
That is Mike Defabo, Pittsburgh Steelers beat writer for The Athletic.
Speaker 1 (33:31):
My great stuff, man, great information. Keep up the great work. Yes, sir, oh,
I appreciate it.

Post it right after we get off the air. All right, Martin.
Rob G.
Speaker 4 (34:26):
Thinks the fact that Kevin Durant is the all time
leading score and rebounder in the Olympics is like the
equivalent of winning two rings in the NBA in terms
of his legacy.
Speaker 1 (34:40):
It's all time heater, Rob G. It's just ridiculous. I mean,
Rob G got up here argue with me and Rob
Parker and I have said.
Speaker 4 (34:48):
I mean, it's nice, it's cute, it's a nice few
sentences somewhere in the middle of your bio. But am
I changing Kevin Durant's legacy? Am I moving him ahead
of somebody I have ahead of him right now, doctor
(35:09):
j Julius Irving, because he played in four Olympics and
became the all time leading scorer and rebount.
Speaker 1 (35:19):
No, I'm not.
Speaker 5 (35:20):
No, I mean it's a great testament to both his
longevity because you got you gotta be four Olympics. That's
almost sixteen years, right, So it speaks to his longevity.
It speaks to his ability as a score and as
all around basketball player to be able to fit in.
Speaker 1 (35:35):
Uh. Just like the caller was.
Speaker 5 (35:36):
Saying at the bottom of the hour, how you know
he's one of the best players who ever?
Speaker 1 (35:40):
Do it? For sure?
Speaker 5 (35:41):
But no, this is this is something that only matters
if you already have a stellar resume, right, Like, the
only reason it matters so much for Carmel low Anthony
is because that his Olympic success matters, because that's pretty
much all he had in his turn doestime Accolade Martin.
Speaker 4 (35:58):
I mean, does it change like mellow is we Obviously
he's not on the Lebron Durant level. No, but he's
in all time great, he's a Hall of Famer. But
I mean, do you really like move him ahead of
some folk because of what he's done in the Olympics.
Speaker 1 (36:12):
I mean he played more Olympic games than the other
player too.
Speaker 5 (36:15):
No, I don't move him ahead of anybody, but I
just think it's definitely something that is relevant to his career,
especially when you consider that every stop he's been along
the way, he's never been a guy along for the ride.
Like if tyree'se Halliburton, for example, goes to the next
three Olympics and wins gold his first one, he was
got along for the ride on this team, Like wuldn't
(36:35):
get a lot of playing time? Wasn't getting a lot
of minutes? And when we're splitting hairs like that, it's
something that we discussed. KD solidified himself to me as
an all time Olympian here, but that's not something that
we use in the rankings of all time great NBA players.
Speaker 1 (36:49):
Yeah, Like I said, I just think for American.
Speaker 4 (36:53):
Players on the Olympic teams, there's really to me, there's
really nothing you can do to like enhance in any
significant way your legacy in the NBA. Because you got
a power pack team. Every opponent you play is overmatched, yep.
(37:19):
And you know it's just it's easier because you got
so many great teammates. And I credit Kevin Durant. It
speaks to like you said, he's just a perfect guy.
When you have a lot of talent around you, you
just need somebody to kind of score, catch and score
and again he's obviously been rebounding, but just to show
(37:40):
that that's not necessarily like some incredibly important accomplishment. You
know who was the all time leading rebounder that he passed,
Carmelo Anthony, who averages six rebounds for his career in
the NBA. Like so, Mellow was not a phenomenal rebound
He was good for a small forward. But the fact
(38:00):
that he's all time leading rebounder now second just shows
you that, you know, it's not like you know, you
you take these into the NBA again, I do think
and I think.
Speaker 1 (38:11):
You made a great point, Martin.
Speaker 4 (38:13):
For great players from other countries who are facing the
US team, they can, you know, impact their legacy to
some degree just because they if they beat a wildly
talented American team right with you know, with little help.
Speaker 1 (38:32):
That's huge.
Speaker 5 (38:33):
Hey, I'm just glad they were able to keep count.
I can't find the stats anywhere apparently they bro It's crazy.
Speaker 1 (38:41):
I mean, seriously, it's like, what are they trying to hide?
I don't get it. I do not get rob g.
Speaker 4 (38:47):
You have been so you have been so so schooled.
Speaker 1 (38:53):
We out
